The Malvern Hills coal project is now in an advanced stage of development with the stripping of overburden from above former underground workings in which a 3 m seam of subbituminous C coal with very low ash and sulphur was previously mined. The main seam dips at 45¦ to the south-east, along with other adjacent potentially recoverable thinner seams, and the strike extent of past coal mining in the Malvern Hills approaches 10 km with most extraction by underground methods. Overburden and interburden is predominantly weak mudstone, with only very minor sandstone, whilst a 1 - 2 m thick veneer of Last Glaciation loess covers the area. The coal product from the present mine site will supply the local industrial market, with production planned to peak at about 20 000 tpa. Settling pond design has been based on several different approaches, including an estimate of likely inflows from the contributing catchment of about 5 ha under predicted storms having a ten year recurrence interval. A pond of about 1000 m2 in area has been constructed with its invert in mudstone bedrock, and soil slopes have been lined with lime-stabilised clayey loess silt incorporating a gravel armour layer. The pond outflow takes place via a 2 m high 1.8 m diameter concrete dewatering tower, with a skimmer arrangement to lower the pond by approximately 500 mm between storm events. The overflow water discharges to the main stream above a natural wetland, which will act as a secondary polishing pond, and this is to be enhanced in conjunction with the neighbouring forestry company. Discharge consents specify turbidity and pH as the controlling criteria, and both will be monitored at the settling pond discharge point as well as at the entry to the main stream. Investigations to date indicate that the pH of water exiting from previous underground workings is in the range 6.8 to 7.2, and that acidic drainage will not be an issue with this mine site. No dispersive clays have been identified in assessing the overburden and batter materials, although erosion during storm events is expected and all drains will ultimately be routed through the main settling pond to ensure adequate control of runoff-generated sediment. Reestablishment of vegetation on cut and fill batters remains a priority, and ongoing monitoring will ensure satisfactory long-term performance of the pond system.

POLITICAL developments, the impact of Korean warfare necessitating immediate rearmament plans, and recent developments in mining taconites have focused attention on their immediate exploitation to fill the gap created by diminishing reserves. The question of rich foreign ores versus low grade development is past-we need both sources with emphasis on the immediate large scale mining of taconites. In the past three months several things have occurred which add to the taconite picture: (1) Pellets have been used successfully in the blast furnace by Armco. (2) In Congress HR 8512 was introduced by Congressman Blatnik of Minnesota to amend the lending powers of RFC to permit long term loans on basic mining developments, particularly the taconites, which may be needed for the strengthening of the national economy. (3) Walter S. Tower, president of the American Iron & Steel Institute, announced that American steel companies are planning expansion of 6,000,000 tons of steelmaking capacities in the next few years. (4) The outbreak of war in Korea has obliged the United States to rearm and make plans for a semipermanent defense establishment to which 10 to 12 pct of the national income will be budgeted. (5) Startling new advances have been made in the Linde Air Products Co.'s jet-piercing drilling. The United States is now confronted with the problem of increasing its steel capacity and at the same time of securing enough iron ore to supply this increase as well as make provision for the rapidly decreasing supply of rich iron ore on the Mesabi range. Taconites, the low grade iron ore at the east end of the Mesabi, of which there are literally billions and billions of tons of easily concentratable magnetic ore, are the immediate answer. According to the Wall Street Journal on July 24: "Reserve Mining Co., backed by such steelmakers as the Armco Steel Corp., Wheeling Steel Co., Republic Steel Corp., is reported ready-as soon as the pending bill clears (HR 8512)-to seek a $100 million federal loan to build a taconite processing plant at Beaver Bay, Minn., to produce about five million tons (of pellets) annually of 60 pct to 65 pct in iron ore . . ." The Henderson mine is an underground panel-caving molybdenum mine located in the mountains of central Colorado. All development and primary production operations are performed using diesel-powered, rubber-tired mobile equipment. The growth in manpower and equipment was rapid in the five years following the July 1976 start-up, reaching about 250 machines and 2000 people to produce 9 Mt/a (10 million stpy) of ore. However, due to dramatic improvements in productivity, production is currently at a rate of 8.1 Mt/a (9 million stpy) with about 570 people and a much smaller equipment fleet. The mine's high degree of mechanization and accompanying maintenance costs have focused increased attention on the maintenance function as a cost center with potential for improvement. To realize some of that potential, several approaches to equipment maintenance have been adopted. None of these stand alone effectively, though, and their success relies on their working together in the overall program. The approaches that characterize the equipment mainte¬nance philosophy at Henderson are described here. Preventive maintenance The value of preventive maintenance as an alternative to breakdown or emergency repair is widely accepted in industry. When production began in 1976, few people at Henderson had experience maintaining diesel-powered, rubber-tired equipment. Other company operations such as its previous Urad operation and the Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, CO used rail and Blusher technology. A maintenance consultant was hired to establish a formal preventive mainte¬nance program. The initial program contained four different preventive maintenance services, "A," "B," "C," and "D." Each was keyed to a different operating interval. • "A" service was the most frequent. It was a quick, general inspection and greasing of all fittings. •"B" service added a more detailed inspection. • "C" service included changing all filters and most fluids, such as engine oil. • "D" service was originally designed as a comprehensive inspection and testing of major component systems over a period of 24 hours during which the equipment was removed from operation. It was believed that most problems uncovered by the inspection could be reported and scheduled for repair at some later date, with only critical repairs being done during the service. In addition to these scheduled preventive maintenance services, a schedlle of minor and major rebuilds at intervals of 2500 to 5000 hours was established.

A total transportation system providing for delivery of finished products to customers and raw materials to the plant is one of the key elements contributing to Dravo Lime Co.'s success. Dravo Lime operates one of the largest noncaptive lime and limestone plants in the US at Maysville, KY, where products produced can cost as much to deliver as they do to manufacture, depending on the product itself, its destination, and mode of transportation. With delivery costs comprising a significant portion of total costs for its products, Dravo Lime has made total transportation services an integral part of its business strategy. Prices for most products produced at Maysville are quoted f.o.b. destination. In short, Dravo Lime's Distribution Department relies on the approach that says to customers: "Leave the delivery to us." The 0.9-Mt/a (1-million stpy) Maysville facility, located about 121 km (75 miles) east of Cincinnati, OH, on the Ohio River, primarily produces sulfur-absorbing Thiosorbic lime used by coal-fired electric utilities as a scrubber reagent to remove SO2 from stack gases. The product is currently supplied to eight power plants in the Ohio River valley region which extends through portions of Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The plant ships approximately 907 kt (1 million st) of lime and a comparable amount of limestone fines each year. In addition, it arranges for delivery of about 181 kt (200,000 st) of coal to the plant. Lime is transported by covered hopper barges, covered rail cars, covered dump trucks, and pneumatic trucks. It is transferred from barges to storage silos and trucks at a terminal on the Ohio River near Marietta, OH. At another terminal near Aliquippa, PA, lime is transferred from barges to silos, trucks, and rail cars. Future plans call for rail-truck transfer terminals. To produce lime from limestone at the Maysville plant, about 181 kt (200,000 st) of coal is burned annually in three coal-fired kilns. In transporting this coal from the mine to Maysville, Dravo takes maximum advantage of opportunities for reloading carriers with limestone for outbound backhaul movement. Coal, shipped from southeastern Kentucky mines in rail cars, is transferred to barges at a river terminal in West Virginia. After it is unloaded at Maysville, the barges are cleaned with a front-end loader and then reloaded with limestone. Limestone also is backhauled in connection with truck deliveries of coal. The economics of using backhaul shipments has permitted Dravo to enter into markets in which Maysville limestone otherwise would not be competitive. The company plans to backhaul limestone in empty open hopper cars in the future. As part of its ongoing assessment of the distribution system that supports the Maysville operation, Dravo Lime recognizes that a new environment has developed between shippers and carriers because of regulatory changes in the railroad and trucking industries. Although dry bulk shipments by barge to and from Maysville have always been unregulated, other forms of transportation have not. With railroads and motor carriers now approaching varying degrees of deregulation, contracts and agreements are replacing tariffs, and rate negotiations are becoming a daily activity. Dravo Lime plans to take advantage of these transportation changes, all of which may be beneficial to both its plant and its customers.

Preliminary evidence indicated that the Chattanooga Shale might constitute a potential vast low-grade source of uranium. Investigation by core drilling indicated that while the Chattanooga Shale may constitute a resource for the future, the very low (0.006 percent) average uranium content is not economic when compared with the relatively higher grade western ores. A total of approximately 12,000 feet of test drilling was done in 72 drillholes, and large samples were mined for extractive and metallurgical testing. An experimental mine site was selected on the basis of the drilling project.

Recent discovery at Mount Isa of copper mineralization in commercial amount at a depth of 1000 ft., coinciding with downward termination of ore at about the same depth within the larger silver-lead-zinc lenses that have been the standby of Mount Isa's production to date, has been cited as an example in support of mineral zoning. A previous paper by the author and Graham Hall1 furnished a detailed description of the geology of the ore at Mount Isa as exposed up to that time, but necessarily dealt mainly with the silver-lead-zinc mineralization. Most of the geologic facts that constitute the first half of the present paper were set forth in the previous one in much greater detail, with full supporting evidence for the facts cited. The large amount of underground development (approximately 20 miles) and the extensive exploration carried out by diamond drilling (100,000 ft.) at Mount Isa, added to extensive microscope work conducted over a period of years, both by the company's staff and by others, had made possible the calculation within fairly close limits of mineralogical composition of the principal mineralized block of ground down to 1000-ft. depth, and had established closely the mineral succession, with reasons for deposition of the various minerals in the patterns now occupied by them. The geologic facts as outlined in the previous paper remain as stated; but because substantial development within the new copper ore body and further exploratory diamond drilling within the new silver-lead-zinc area (Racecourse) have taken place since that paper was written, statements and figures relating to those two areas in the present paper supersede those furnished in the previous one. The recent work likewise has established more clearly the paragenetic relationship between the chalco-pyrite and galena. Evidence confirming the relationship is furnished in the present paper. MR. PRESIDENT AND CO-WORKERS IN THE COAL INDUSTRY: I was requested by our president to prepare a paper on Longwall Coal Mining, to be read before this honorable organization. There are three general systems of Longwall, Longwall advancing and Longwall retreating, and the Nottingham system which is worked in England and South Wales. In Fremont county, where I am employed, the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company are working their mines on the advancing system. The face is started generally from the bottom of the shaft or other mine opening, or, at the outside of the pillar left to support the shaft or slope-bottom and advances toward the boundary of coal area. As the roads in this system are maintained by pack walls, it is sometimes called gob-roads system, and by these means the mine is opened up rapidly and consequently early returns are secured from the capital invested. By this method, there is no expense for narrow work, and a minimum amount of timbering of the roads is required. Now what I call ideal Longwall work is where there is about eight inches of dirt mining-and four and one-half feet of coal, .and when the entries and rooms will gob themselves, so that there will be no rock or dirt to haul out to the surface. But this is not the case in the mine I am in charge of. The entries and rooms will not gob themselves, therefor we have to haul the rock and dirt to the surface, which runs up the cost of production. Now the ideal roof in Longwall is composed of tough elastic and pliable strata that yield gradually by bending when the coal is removed, and throwing a sufficient weight or roof pressure on the coal face to break the coal when the same has been mined or undercut. Timbering should be done systematically, the coal well spragged before the miner starts to undermine the coal. Cogs or cribs are alright in their place, but I am not a believer in crib in Longwall working because they are too strong for the roof and do not leave the roof to squeeze .down gradually and break the roof around the crib. Longwall work requires particular skill on the part of the miner, and a familiarity with the conditions affecting room and pillar work, and a good room and pillar mail may not be successful in. Longwall work. A good Longwall miner realizes more than any one else the importance of being regularly at his place every working day. A day lost causes his place to fall behind the others which makes his work harder, and his daily output is further reduced by the amount of small coal that is liable to result from the excessive pressure where the face falls behind. The bad results are also felt by the miner working on each side of such place, as the roof pressure is often insufficient and the coal does not break as well as when the face is kept in a uniform line.

(written discussion?).-My experience has been that, where possible, it is preferable for each foreman to employ his own men, rather than to have them handled through an employment bureau. The fact that each foreman comes into direct contact with the man before he is put to work gives him an opportunity to choose, at certain times, the kind and class of men that he wishes. Where possible, after a man is employed he is sent to a central office where a complete history of each individual is kept on a card. If a man has previously been in the employ of the Company, his history can be obtained from this card, and if for any reason he is not wanted he can be refused work at the time he reports to, the central office. In connection with Workman's Compensation costs, we in Wyoming feel that although the rates of compensation paid may in some cases be rather low our law works satisfactorily. As the State and the number of employees are small, compensation cases are handled through Judges of the various District Courts. In the State Treasurer's Department, a few clerks were added to look after the handling and issuing of warrants and compiling of statistics. Most of the large employers have an arrangement by which a joint claim and assent, specifying the amount of compensation due, is made tip by the employer and signed by the workman. This is forwarded, to the Judges so that personal investigation of individual cases is not necessary. In this manner, compensation is promptly received and' overhead expenses of operation of the law is kept at the minimum. The law requires each employer to pay into the State Treasury, for the benefit of the industrial fund, a sum equal to 1.5 per cent. of the money earned by each employee, engaged during each calendar month of such employment. Each employer contributes monthly, unless the sum heretofore contributed, after deducting all payments made on account of injuries to his employees, shall equal a full 1.5 per cent. of his annual pay roll, computed by multiplying his current monthly pay roll by twelve, and shall likewise be not less than ($5000). It has been found during the years that this law has been in effect, that a number of the larger employers have been exempt from payment for from five to eight months per year, so that in some cases, even in coal nines, industrial insurance has cost less than 0.75 per cent.

The Whale Lode occurs in the main range of the Rocky Mountains, Park County, Colorado Territory, at Hall Valley. It has been opened up and worked to some extent by the Whale Mine, situated some 11,300 feet above the level of the sea. The mine, with 700 feet of the lode on either side of the discovery shaft, is the property of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company. The adjacent country rock is a compact, fine-grained gneiss; its general strike is about north and south, dipping steeply to the west. In the immediate vicinity of the mine, the strata are very nearly vertical. The gneiss incloses numberless veins of a reddish granite, in which the feldspar largely predominates over the quartz and mica, the latter oftentimes being scarcely perceptible. As a general rule these granitic veins seem to more frequently follow the lines of stratification of the gneiss than otherwise. They are of varying width, some large, some small; the larger are from 5 to 6 feet wide. Gash veins of feldspar and quartz are also of very frequent occurrence. The general trend of the lode is about northeast. and southwest, intersecting the country rock at about an angle of 45 to its stratification. It dips to the northwest at an angle of 65. I am unable to state accurately how far this lode has been traced upon the surface, but it is at least well known to extend entirely through the mountain upon which the mine is situated, and is traceable over the ridge by a hollow extending for some distance along the surface, in which the lode crops out. This hollow in the surface rock has probably been formed through decomposition of the vein matter by atmospherical influences. The width of the crevice is variable, generally between 5 and 10 feet; the pay vein varies from an inch, or less, to 36 inches. The vein is generally accompanied both on foot and hanging walls by a whitish, semi-decomposed fock, composed of quartz and decomposed feldspar, and in some places—where the process of decomposition has not reached as advanced a stage—a lightgreenish or black mica. This rock, therefore, is in places composed of all the constituents of gneiss, and is undoubtedly nothing more or less than the same in a decomposed condition. The US Bureau of Mines has funded several research and development projects in computerized mine monitoring and control. Hardware and software components have been sufficiently developed so that mine operators have been provided with an efficient means to comply with federal regulations and increase mine safety. Several cost benefits have been realized as well, particularly with increased conveyor belt haulage availability. Western Fuels-Utah Inc. approached the Bureau to assist in planning, installing, and evaluating a computerized mine monitoring and control system because of the agency's research experience in this area. The installation was planned for Western Fuel's Deserado mine, located in Rangely, CO. Since a large, complex, underground mine producing about 2.4 Mt/a (2.7 million stpy) of coal was projected, the company anticipated significant benefits in safety and efficiency through a computerized monitoring and control system. A major part of the cooperative program was to document and evaluate the system design, installation, and operation. This will assist others to adequately design, specify, install, and operate future systems. Mine description The Deserado mine plan and layout have important impacts on the monitoring system requirements. Long range plans are to produce 2.4 Mt (2.7 million st) of clean coal annually from two longwall sections and four continuous sections. Presently, two continuous miner sections operate under 213 m (700 ft) of overburden in the 2.3 to 2.5 m (7.5 to 8.5 ft) thick D seam to develop main, submain, and panel entries have developed for a longwall. These began operation in December 1986. Belt conveyors haul the coal from the mining sections to a 1.4-m (54-in.) belt located in the upper compartment of the slope. The lower compartment contains a hoist for men and material transport. From the slope, the coal moves to two 9 kt (10,000 st) raw coal storage silos, then to a 680-t/h (750-stph) preparation plant. After cleaning, a 5.5-km (3.5-mile) overland conveyor carries the coal to a clean coal slot storage and rail load-out facility. An electric locomotive then transports the coal to the Bonanza Power Plant in Utah. Allen-Bradley monitoring and control hardware and software controls the preparation plant, with two PLC-3 programmable controllers and a Process Control Industries D-1200 color graphics interface. The system operator uses three "smart" color video display units and an alarm printer for hard copy records. Originally, it also monitored and controlled the conveyors from the bottom of the slope to the top of the raw coal silos, the preparation plant, the overland conveyors, the main mine ventilation fan, and the hoist. Some of these features, though, were later transferred to the mine system.

The piloting and eventual large-scale operation of fixed-bed carbon columns for the recovery of gold from plant effluents is described. A fixed-bed carbon pilot plant comprising three adsorption columns was used for the recovery of gold from clarified plant effluent at the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company (West Division). The effluent ,which contained 0,1 toO,S g/t of gold and less than 10 g/t of free cyanide, was adjusted to pH 8 prior to use. Daily acid treatment of the carbon circuit with 3 per cent hydrochloric acid was shown to have a most significant effect on increasing the gold adsorption. The acid treatment involved a plant downtime of only I to 2 minutes per day. High loadings of gold (up to 30 k g/t) and copper (up to 75 k g/t) were obtained on the leading column, while the gold recoveries averaged 98 per cent over 17 weeks of continuous operation. The subsequent elution of loaded carbon in a pilot elution column indicated the use of abnormally high amounts of the pretreatment reagent (caustic soda and cyanide) used in gold elution. This was attributed to the high loading of copper on the carbon. However, the elution of both the gold and the copper at 110°C with demineralized water as the eluant was satisfactory. In a similar large-scale operation, three fixed-bed carbon columns each containing 4,5 t of carbon were used to treat 80 to 120 t/h of plant effluent with a gold concentration of about 0,15 g/t. Gold loadings of 5 to 6 k g/t were obtained regularly, while the gold recovery averaged 97 per cent over a 12-month period. The capital cost of the plant was recovered in 2 to 3 months. The evidence presented strongly suggests that copper plays a significant role in the adsorption and elution of gold under the prescribed conditions, and in the subsequent precipitation of gold following acidification of the eluates. The formation of a highly insoluble gold-copper complex produced under acid conditions appears to explain many of the observations made in the investigation.

The serious shortage of eastern gas coal and of coke for gas-making in Illinois and adjoining states during the winter of 1917-1918 was emphasized at the meeting of the Illinois Gas Association, March, 1918. The seriousness of the situation was of concern not merely to private interests but to the general public, which consumes gas for heating, lighting, and for important industrial uses. Some relief was thought possible if central district coals from Illinois, Indiana, and western Kentucky could be used generally as a substitute for eastern coal and coke in the manufacture of retort gas and water-gas. Already a little Illinois and Indiana coal was being used under special circumstances in Illinois retort plants and successful experiments with mixtures of Illinois coal and eastern coal had been conducted at the Decatur retort-gas plant by F. K. Ovitz of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Illinois Mining Investigations, with the advice and cooperation of a committee of the Illinois Gas Association. Consequently, it seemed desirable to continue experiments with central district coal in gas retorts, and with coal as a substitute for coke in water-gas generators, and to give publicity to the results and technical assistance to companies desiring to use central district coal. Other matters, of national importance were the prospective shortage of toluol and of ammonia for the manufacture of explosives, and the possibility of encouraging recovery of additional amounts from some of the plants in central states that were not contributing these substances. Results of work done by the Gas Section, Illinois Mining Investigations, under the advice of the Technical Committee, were pushed to early publication until the signing of the armistice lessened the importance of speed as a war measure. Among the objects of interest which the members of the Institute are invited to examine in connection with this meeting is the Brown segmental wire-gun, which will be seen in process of construction at the works of the Pennsylvania Diamond Drill and Manufacturing Company, at Birdsboro. This is a 5-inch breech-loading (highpower) rifle, 19 feet long, constructed upon the system of Mr. J. H. Brown, an inventor of recognized genius in many branches of mechanical industry, and under the engineering direction of Lieutenant G. N. Whistler, Fifth U. S. Artillery. The system consists essentially of the subdivision of the inner core or tube of the gun, which takes up the initial compression, into longitudinal segments of such size that a higher physical condition and degree of special elasticity may be set up therein than it is possible to produce in the larger masses of metal heretofore used for the tube of the modern high-power cannon. The process consists in winding layers of square steel wire, subjected to a constant tension of 130,000 pounds per square inch, around these segments, which, when so held together, form the tube of the gun. A lining-tube may or may not be used. The steel segments used in the gun now under construction are 18 feet 4 inches long, and 3 inches thick at the breech, from which they taper to 0.8 inches at the muzzle. The physical condition of the segments has been determined by test-pieces, cut from each end of each segment, which show the following characteristics: Tensile strength, 165,000 pounds per square inch. Elastic limit, 105,000 pounds per square inch. Elongation at rupture, 14 per cent. in 2 inches. They are of crucible chrome steel, made by the Carpenter Steel Works, at Reading, Pa. The wire which holds them together has 0.005 square inches sectional area and is wound under a constant tension of 650 pounds on each strand, equivalent to 130,000 pounds per square inch. In the paper on the development of the flotation process at Broken Hill (Australia) prepared by the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and published in its Proceedings for 1930 (N. S. 80), it is stated that the concentration of ores by flotation has been established on a commercial basis in Australia since 1904 and that differential flotation was practised at Broken Hill in 1912. Since then, progress in flotation practice throughout the world has been rapid, and during recent years the knowledge of the reactions between comparatively modern so-called chemical promoters or collecting agents and the mineral surfaces has been broadened by the published accounts of many investigators, particularly those working in American universities. Because of the benefits the Australian mining industry has derived from the flotation process, it was felt that the industry should take some part in the efforts that are being made to extend the knowledge of the principles on which the flotation process is based. Accordingly, early in 1930, three Broken Hill mining companies—the Broken Hill South, the North Broken Hill, and the Zinc Corporation—together with the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, Ltd., and the Mount Lyell Mining & Railway Co., established a laboratory in the chemistry department of the University of Melbourne for the purpose of investigating the principles underlying flotation. Subsequently, the Burma Corporation, Ltd., expressed a desire to cooperate. The two authors are directly employed and controlled by these six organizations, and the cost of the investigation is divided equally among them. The research has been carried out under the general direction and in close cooperation with Harry Hey, chief metallurgist for the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, Ltd., and the authors desire to place on record their indebtedness to him for his ever willing help and constructive criticism. After an extensive search of the literature, it was decided to determine in a preliminary investigation whether the effect of chemical collectors could be evaluated quantitatively by the "contact-angle" method. INTRODUCTION Previous papers by this author have discussed some of the difficulties involved with optimizing the performance of industrial flotation circuits, e.g. Klimpel (1988, 1989). The two major problems seem to be: 1) the inherent "systems" nature of the froth flotation process which leads to a great deal of self-compensation among the various operating options available and 2) the inherent variations in mineralogy, water chemistry, etc. that always seem to be present in industrial operations. In particular, the influence of reagent dosage has been emphasized in the above referenced work including an industrial system interaction denoted as the R/K trade-off, Klimpel (1984, 1987). Using a simple two parameter model for fitting time - recovery data, Klimpel (1980): [ ] where r is cumulative recovery at time t or at the t th cell, R is the long-term equilibrium recovery and K is the first-order rate of mass removal from the cell (time ), the definition of the R/K trade-off with increasing reagent dosage can be given as follows: at low dosages both R and K increase, at intermediate dosages R continues to increase but K starts to level out, and at high dosages, R may flatten out or still continue to increase but K starts to decrease, sometimes rather quickly. An illustration of this effect in a batch laboratory flotation cell is given in Figure 1. The purpose of this paper is to give a detailed plant illustration of this R/K trade-off phenomena with changing collector dosage which shows just how highly interactive the grindinglflotation system in sulfide mineral processing really is. This is one of about 20 plant level case studies that are being presented and evaluated in an upcoming book, Klimpel (1990). The particular study given here was completed in late 1979 on a copper ore of head grade 0.93% Cu. The frother being used was Dowfroth* 250 at a constant dosage of 0.15 g for each ton of solids feed to the rougher bank and the slurry pH was 10.2. The motivation of the study was to better understand the relationship of changes in feed rate (hence in particle size and state of liberation) with variations in collector dosage (potassium amyl xanthate). The major concern was to determine how much extra economic benefit could be gained by better utilizing the existing grinding mills and rougher bank consisting of eight identical cells. The remainder of the flotation circuit was also studied, including regrinding of rougher tails, but did not prove as critical as the rougher bank operation itself. It appeared from an overall economic viewpoint, the battle was being won or lost in the manner in which the rougher bank was being operated. This was not to minimize the roles of the scavenging and cleaning circuits but those portions of this particular circuit could be rather obviously operated to achieve maximum benefit given the specific output of the rougher bank. A special attempt was made to maintain constant ore type throughout the entire test program. Eight specific test conditions were evaluated including three different feed rates (and hence three different size distributions) to flotation. Tables 1 and 2 summarize the eight test conditions and overall recovery results at the end of the rougher bank for each test. A single test consisted of at least three consecutive eight-hour shifts operating at steady-state with composite cell lip samples taken over the final eight-hour shift. ALTHOUGH the shooting of oil wells for the purpose of increasing production has been practiced since 1866, present-day shooting technique has been arrived at almost wholly by a process of trial and error. The difficulties attending either a theoretical analysis of the problem or an experimental attack become apparent when one actually embarks on a theoretical investigation or attempts to formulate an intelligent experimental program. The literature on the subject consists mainly of descriptions of current practice, scattered eye-witness accounts of events following the shooting of a well, and vague speculations on the mechanical processes involved. In contrast to quarry blasting, the results of oil-well shooting cannot be determined by means of visual inspection, and it is perhaps for this reason that only one attempt at what approaches a direct experimental attack has been reported in the literature.1 In these experiments, charges of liquid nitroglycerin were exploded in holes drilled in a sandstone outcrop. In order to observe the character and extent of the resulting fractures, the rock was blasted away so as to expose the original shot holes. After all this had been done it was found impossible to distinguish the fracturing due to the original shots from that due to the subsequent blasting. The enlargement of the holes due to the pulverizing action of the shots was. measured and an attempt was made to determine the effectiveness of 'sand tamping. Only five shots were made and few definite conclusions could be drawn. Some small-scale experiments to determine the effect of tamping were performed by Snelling and Hall,2 Small charges (20 grams) of dynamite were detonated at the bottom of a cylindrical hole in a lead block and the resulting enlargement of the hole was taken as a measure of the effectiveness of the explosion. It was found that when the shot was tamped with a sufficient amount of sand or clay, the volume enlargement was approximately double that found when no stemming had been used. The properties of the explosives have been the subject of much study by the manufacturers, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and various other agencies. For example, velocities of detonation for many commercial explosives are to be found in the Blasters' Handbook, issued by the Du Pont company. Many other properties are given in a treatise on the subject by Naoum.3 The shock wave that accompanies the detonation of high explosives has been studied photographically by Payman4 and others. The hydrodynamical theory of the shock wave has received much attention, and an extended theoretical treatment is given by Bateman.5 Two aspects of the well-shooting problem will be considered in this paper; namely, the fracturing of subsurface strata, and possible damage to casing. With respect to the former of these, several calculations have been made giving the stresses in the rocks surrounding the shot. Preparation of coal begins at the face in underground mines or in the pit with surface mines. Impurities in raw coal can be in the seam itself or in extraneous material taken in mining from the roof or bottom. Raw coal is prepared only to the extent that is necessary to make the product salable. Over 60% of all coal production is processed to some extent in cleaning plants. For underground mines the proportion cleaned is 72% as compared to 42% from surface and 15% from auger mines. Coal supplied for coking purposes is nearly all upgraded by washing, while for the largest market, electric power generation, a high proportion is shipped as a raw product with processing, in whole or in part, only as necessary when excess impurities are mined with the coal. This chapter will deal primarily with plants that process or wash coal to some extent and only incidently with mines shipping raw run-of-mine coal crushed to a top size of, usually, 2 to 4 in., with little, if any, other treatment. ECONOMICS OF COAL PREPARATION During the past decade, major changes have occurred affecting the market, profit, and long-rang planning of the coal industry. Mining companies have become "partners" with consumers at many new and some old mines, both for steam and metallurgical coals. Coal properties have become "assigned" tonnages at mutually agreed upon conditions and prices. Lower unit-train tariffs have been instrumental in helping coal markets to compete against oil and atomic energy. Cod prices for power plants are still on a Btu (British thermal unit) basis but with more emphasis on sulfur content. For metallurgical coal, the lower and medium volatile coals are in demand and the price rises, generally, as the volatile percentage is lower. Moisture affects the Btu value of coal almost the same as ash content, but dusty conditions during loading and unloading are no longer accept-

CONSIDERABLE deep hole prospect drilling has been done in the last few years in the Globe-Miami mining district about 70 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona, and in the San Manuel-Tiger area about 50 miles south of the Globe-Miami region. More than 205,000 ft of churn drilling have been completed by the San Manuel Copper Corp. at their property in the Old Hat Mining District in southern Pinal County. The deepest hole on this property is 2850 ft; there are 49 holes deeper than 2000 ft. At the adjoining Houghton property of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., where only one hole reached 2000-ft depth, there were 27,472 ft of churn drilling and 3436 ft of diamond drilling. Three churn drill holes were deepened by diamond drilling methods. Near Miami in the Globe-Miami district the Amico Mining Corp. drilled four holes by combined churn and rotary drilling methods, the total amounting to 13,879 ft, of which 2256 ft were drilled with a portable rotary rig. In the same district, besides doing a large amount of shallow prospect drilling, the Miami Copper Co. drilled two holes of 2560 and 3787 ft, respectively, which were completed by churn drilling methods. The rocks encountered in drilling at San Manuel and Tiger are described by Steele and Rubly in their paper on the San Manuel Prospect' and by Chapman in a report on the San Manuel Copper Deposit? The rocks are well-consolidated Gila conglomerate, quartz , monzonite, and monzonite porphyry. In some places these formations stand very well while being drilled, and three holes were drilled without casing, the deepest of which was 2200 ft. In other holes faulted and fractured ground made drilling difficult. In the Globe-Miami district the deep drilling was done in the down-faulted block of Gila conglomerate east of the Miami fault and in the underlying Pinal schist. The geology of this area is described by Ransome.3 In the Amico holes the conglomerate varied from material consisting entirely of granite boulders and fragments to a rock made up of schist fragments in a sandy matrix; in the Miami Copper Co. holes there were more granite boulders and the material was poorly consolidated. Drilling was much more difficult and expensive in the Miami area than in the San Manuel district, mainly because of the depth of the holes and the formations drilled. All the deep hole prospecting described in this paper was done with portable rigs. The churn drill rigs were of several types, of which the Bucyrus-Erie were the most popular. Bucyrus-Erie 28L, 29W, and 36L rigs were used on some of the deeper holes on the San Manuel property. A few Fort Worth spudder types were tried, and the deepest hole at San Manuel was drilled with a Fort Worth Jumbo H. The spudder type is considerably larger than most other rigs used on this work and required a larger location site. The spudders were belt-driven machines with separate power units, and time required for setting up and moving was much longer than with the more portable drills. All the churn drilling was done by contractors or with machinery leased from them. A few of the contractors had complete equipment, including most of the necessary fishing tools. Unusual and special, fishing tools were obtainable from the supply companies in the oil fields of New Mexico or in the Los Angeles area. Most of the contractors used equipment with standard API tool joints, so that much of it was interchangeable. Failure of tool joints is one of the principal causes of fishing jobs. It can be minimized if the joints are kept to the API specifications and the proper sized joints are used in the various holes. The minimum sizes that should be used with various bits are as follows: 12-in. and larger bits, 4x5-in. tool joints; 10-in. bits, 3 1/4x4 1/4-in. tool joints; 8-in. bits, 2 3/4x 3 3/4-in. tool joints; 6-in. bits, 2 1/4 x3 l/4 -in. tool joints; 4-in. bits, 1 5/8 x2 5/8-in. tool joints. Two rotary drill rigs were tried at San Manuel on the same hole, and a portable rotary drill rig was used on the Amico drilling for test coring the formation and for drilling in holes 3 and 4. Rotary drilling differs from churn drilling or cable tool drilling in that the bit is revolved by a string of drill pipe and the cuttings are removed from the hole by a thin solution of mud pumped through the drill pipe. The principal parts of a rotary rig are the power unit, a rotating table to revolve the drill pipe, hoists to raise and lower the pipe and to handle casing, and a pumping system to circulate the drilling liquid. The rig used on the Amico property at Miami was mounted on a truck. The larger rig used on the San Manuel property was hauled by several trucks and had separate turntable and pumping units. Diamond drill coring equipment was used successfully with the rotary rig in the holes on the Amico property, To allow for 2 3/8-in. drill pipe with tool joints, 3 1/2-in. core barrels and bits were used. With the standard 3 1/2-in. core barrel there was considerable difficulty in maintaining circulation with mud, so a barrel was designed with a smaller inner tube and a broad-faced bit. This allowed coarser material to circulate between the barrels. Rock bits of 5 5/8 to 3 7/8 in. were used with the rotary rig for drilling between core runs. Diamond drill equipment is much lighter than churn drill tools, so that fishing tools can usually be obtained from supply houses by air express when needed. Three churn drill holes on the Houghton property at Tiger were deepened by diamond drilling with Longyear UG Straitline gasoline-driven-machines. The open churn drill hole was cased with 2 1/2-in. black pipe.
