Work was undertaken two years ago at the Hammond Laboratory for the purpose of determining the magnitude of the elastic range in single crystals of pure metals by means of creep tests, the assumption being made that if a true elastic range exists, the elastic limit represents the maximum stress for no creep. A sensitive extensometer was constructed, and creep tests were made on zinc single crystals at a variety of loads and temperatures1. It was soon discovered that there is no measurable elastic limit in ductile zinc single crystals at, or above, room temperature. The inference that pure metallic single crystals may not possess a definite elastic range was not justified, however, since zinc had been tested in creep only above its recrystallization temperature, and several investigator2,3,4 had already shown that above the recrystallization temperature polycrystalline metals will flow under very small stresses, while below that temperature stresses of a much larger magnitude are required. For that reason, it was decided to extend the study of the elastic limit to other metals having a higher recrystallization temperature than zinc. Aluminum and silver were selected, because of the ease of obtaining pure materials and of preparing large single crystals, and because the crystallo-graphic glide system of these metals is well known. Owing to the limited time available, the elastic range was investigated by slow tensile tests rather than by creep tests. It seems appropriate here to open with a quotation from the great pre-Confucian philosopher Lao-tze: "The softest thing in the world dashes against and overcomes the hardest. There is nothing in the world softer or weaker than water, and yet for attacking things that are firm and strong there is nothing that can take precedence of it." I am happy to report that our system of mining has worked out, with minor modifications, as well or better than was predicted. This, in a period of rising labor and material costs, has been most gratifying. Gilsonite is a solid hydrocarbon which occurs in vertical fissures cutting the sandstone and shale beds of the Uintah formation in south¬eastern Utah. It is found in other parts of the world under similar occurrence but nowhere else is it now being mined commercially. The Gilsonite veins on entering the shale members of the Green¬river formation break into small veinlets separated by shale, These veinlets are not now economical to mine.

LAWRENCE ADDICKS, Douglas, Ariz.-I think papers of this character, while general in, nature, are of particular value and interest, because when we figure on competing with the East in electrometallurgical industries, on account of the cheap power on the Pacific Coast, we have to take two or three things into account. In the first place, power very rarely amounts to more than 20 per cent. of the total cost of an operation, even .though it be electrometallurgical, and I think it is the common opinion among those who are not familiar with those particular industries, that it amounts to more than 50 or 60 per cent. Take copper refining; we may say that it is 15 per cent. of the total cost. In the second place, around New York City, with 100 per cent. load factor and a reasonably large load, say 10,000 kw., we can generate from a certain class of coal 1 kw.-hr. for about 0.3c. I might say, however, that 0.3c. does not include overhead charges, interest on the investment, etc. The third factor we have to consider out here is that any product to be salable, must command a retail market. It would be useless to produce wire bars here on the Pacific Coast because there is no place to roll them. If we were going to establish a copper refinery, that part of its output which goes into wire bars would have to be taken care of by building a rolling mill alongside of it to turn it into wire and finally make a product that is salable. I do not think, however, that Mr. Lyon need have excluded copper refining from his industries. There are perhaps 50,000,000 lb. of copper a month refined in this country on a custom basis. I think the smelting companies would be very glad to build refineries here if conditions warranted it. The recent extensions of the Great Falls refinery and of the Tacoma refinery in the last few months give evidence of that.

The effect of suspended solids on the resistivity of slurries is discussed and the relationship between drilling mud resistivity and mud filtrate investigated. It is concluded that it is erroneous to substitute mud resistivity for mud filtrate resistivity in electric log calculations. A recommendation is made that both the bud resistivity and the mud filtrate resistivity be determined when electric logs are run. INTRODUCTION The electric log is influenced not only by the resistvity of the drilling mud in the borehole at the time of logging but also by the resistivity of the drilling mud filtrate. Sherborne and Newtoni investigated the relationship of mud resistivity to mud filtrate resistivity and concluded that, "The resistivity of the mud in most cases closely approximates that of its filtrate," and "In fact, with the exception of Aquagel and its filtrate, the figures for any particular mud and filtrate are almost identical." Present practice is to determine only the drilling mud resistivity and apply this same value to calculations involving the mud filtrate. The purpose of this study is to reexamine the factors governing the relationship between mud resistivity and mud filtrate resistivity. EFFECT OF BOREHO1.E FLUID ON THE ELECTRIC LOG Resistivity Log The resistivity log may be modified by the resistivity of the borehole fluid in two different ways: (1) The apparent resistivity of a for-formation may be different from the true resistivity of the formation because of the flow of some current through the drilling mud in the borehole. Therefore the resistivity of the mud is an important factor. (2) The apparent resistivity may differ from the true resistivity, if a formation is invaded by mud filtrate, because of displacement by the mud filtrate of some of the interstitial fluid in the formation. In this case the resistivity of the mud filtrate rather than the resistivity of the mud is the important factor. Self Potential Log The self potential arises, in part, from electrochemical effects resulting from the interaction of connate waters in porous formations and the fluid in the borehole. Expressed in simple form, E = Klog-p where E is the electrochemical self potential, K is a derived constant, pl is the resistivity of the borehole fluid, and p2 the resistivity of the water in the formation. A theory of the electrochemical component of the self potential in boreholes has been recently set forth by Wyllie.3 In the above equation resistivities have been substituted for activities of the ions in the fluids.' It is therefore apparent that the resistivity of the mud filtrate is more nearly representative of the activities of the ions than is the resistivity of the mud. However, it is possible that in some instances the ionic activities of cations from certain clays may contribute to the total cationic activity of the drilling fluid to such an extent that the mud resistivity is more nearly representative of the activities than the filtrate resistivity. This is particularly the case when the resistivity of the mud is less than the resistivity of the mud filtrate. In addition the apparent self potential may be influenced by the resistivity of the drilling mud because of current flow through the borehole. RESISTIVITY OF SLURRIES Aqueous drilling muds are slurries containing fine-grained solid particles. The solid constituents consist mainly of added clays and weighting materials in addition to solids contributed by the drilled formations. The filtrate is primarily water in which quantities of salts or other chemicals are dissolved. The resistivity of the fiiltrate is a function of the type and quantity of dissolved material whereas the resistivity of the mud is a function of the combined resistivities of the filtrate and the resistivities of the suspended solids. Experiments have been carried out to determine the relationship between the resistivity of solutions and the quantity and type of solid matter insus-pension. Solid materials of high resistivity, as well as solid materials of relatively low resistivity, have been used. The data obtained make possible the evaluation of the probable effect of suspended solids on the resistivity of drilling mud. Procedure Resistivities were determined by means of a conventional conductivity cell with platinized-platinum electrodes. Total resistance between the electrodes was measured by Kohlrausch's alternating current bridge method using a General Radio Company Type 650-A impedance bridge with telephone. The cell was standardized with potassium chloride solutions of known normalities in order to calibrate the cell so that measured resistances of slurries could be converted to resistivities. Resistivities were determined for mixtures of potassium chloride solution and solid materials by placing a measured quantity of solution in the cell and adding weighed quantities of solid materials in small increments to the solution. The net change in resistance on addition of solid materials was measured. Even distribution of the solid particles was maintained within the cell by a motor-driven glass propeller before measurements were made. Slurries Containing High-Resistivity Solids Powdered silica sand having a maximum diameter of about 60 microns and precipitated chalk of commercial grade were used to make the slurries whose resistivities were measured. Both of these substances have high resistivities, are virtually insoluble, and effectively do not carry current in a slurry. The resistivities of slurries composed of potassium chloride solution and these two solid materials are given in Table 1. A large number of firms and institutions have evaluated possibilities of mining the manganese nodule source, beginning with a major effort in 1957-58. There have been as many as ten commercial firms actively engaged in major programs of engineering and development, including Deepsea Ventures/Tenneco, Hughes Tool Co., Kennecott Copper Corp. and Ocean Resources, Inc. Foreign firms active in the field are International Nickel CO., Sumitomo Group/MITI, AMR (a joint venture of three West German companies-Metallgesell- schaft AG, Preussag and Salzgitter AG), and Societe le Nickel (CNEXO). It is estimated that it will take from 11 to 19 years for the more successful ventures to reach operational levels. Investment Costs and Rates of Return Five different programs, all from public sources, have been studied to analyze dollar figures regarding investment costs and the possible return on these costs. All are based on a unit of production of a million tpy of dry nodules through the processing plant, which is considered the minimum likely capacity. The costs are not always comparable, and with some liberties, have been forced into two categories. The first covers mining and sea-related costs. The second will include the onshore processing and other costs such as administrative and distribution figures. The costs in all cases are for complete ventures extending from prospecting through mining, processing and distribution of several metals and other products derived from the nodules. All costs are joint product costs, making certain comparisons with land mining difficult.

"As the result of the work of an efficient safety organization, the Midwest Refining Co. at its various operations and particularly in the Salt Creek field has been able to show a definite accident reduction. Lost-time accidents during the past year have been reduced to a small number as compared with previous years, and infection cases have been almost eliminated.The accident-prevention work of the Midwest Refining Co. is in charge of the department of industrial relations, with a director as the administrative head; two safety men handle the work directly at Midwest, Wyo. A competent medical staff with a well-equipped hospital at Midwest is also an important factor in the prompt and proper treatment of injured persons when an employee is injured, he is given first-aid and then taken to the hospital with minimum delay.About 1,450 persons are employed in the 4 departments (production, gas, pipe lines, and electrical) and in the 34 districts of the Midwest Refining Co. The work at Midwest spreads over a considerable area, and new drilling operations, pipe work, and similar activities require the services of many small gangs of workers. Complete supervision, of each job, whether shall or large, is possible through the large number of superintendents, foremen, and gang pushers employed; thus, there are 20 superintendents, 78 foremen, and 115 gang pushers. The largest number of men under any one toss is approximately 15, and it is probable that much of the good safety record is due to this intensive supervision. These company officials, including the gang pushers, have been impressed with the idea that it is their duty to see that the men under them do not get hurt; the responsibility of instructing new employees in safety practices is placed directly upon them. Monthly meetings of the field officials, including superintendents, foremen, and gang pushers, and as far as possible the men, of each district are held with the safety engineer. Both officials and men are encouraged to bring up for discussion any practice or proposals looking to the changing of any conditions that will"

WILLIS,* Bisbee, Ariz.-(written discussion?).-The consensus of the discussion of the paper of Dr. Lanza indicates that the physical examination, while it is probably a good thing, is fought by the workingman, and that, because of this fact, it has been proved unsuccessful. The physical examination standing alone is worth but little, and could easily be made a subject both of ridicule and dissension unless the company having such examination shows its own good faith in promoting a thoroughly better health program. It is easily seen why a workman would resent his employer expecting him to be physically fit, if at the same time the employer provides un-healthful, unsanitary, working conditions, or if the town in which the employees are expected to live is dirty and unkempt. One mocks the other. The employer cannot say, "You must remain healthy so that I can get by with unhealthy conditions." But if working- conditions are as good as can be obtained to keep men well, the employer can ask his men to be in a healthy condition. A State examination and standard would have many difficulties, owing to the fact that a man would pass or would not pass the standard set, thus eliminating the discretion on the part of the employer in placing men whose physical condition might well permit working in one place and not another. Any physical examination that is run for the purpose of eliminating the physically unfit is unjust, both to the worker and to the nation as a whole; a State examination would make a distinct dividing line, whereas examination by the employer is conducted with a vision of the positions available. The workman's opposition to the physical examination comes from the fact that he has been taught to believe that it is an interference in his personal affairs, that he can be clean or dirty as he chooses, that he can he healthy or unhealthy, and that it is nobody's business but his own. The war has taught us, however, that the individual is no longer the unit and that all such propositions must be based on the greatest good for the greatest number.

The BIOX® process was developed for the biological pre-treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates ahead of conventional cyanide leach gold recovery. Rights to the process are currently with BIOMIN Technologies SA, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Limited. There are currently eight operating installations worldwide employing the process on a commercial scale. EKATO is a company specializing in developing new or optimizing existing mixing applications. EKATO has acquired a vast amount of expertise in agitation over its 75 year history. In a joint research project the reactors of the BIOX® process were characterized from the aspect of their mixing performance. BIOMIN is constantly testing new mixing solutions and reviewing potential vendors to increase the efficiency of the BIOX® process. EKATO?s intention was to qualify as an approved vendor for supplying agitation equipment to the BIOX® process. A two step approach was planned: In phase one of the project EKATO would develop an alternative agitation solution to the established option, exhibiting at least similar performance levels. In phase two potential possibilities to improve the overall design would be developed. This paper focuses on phase one and addresses the systematic approach applied by EKATO in characterizing the mixing processes. Mixing tasks were assessed individually applying basic theory and scale-up and -down rules to the individual tasks. Testing with model systems was done at the EKATO technology center in Schopfheim, Germany, on scales of 50 liters and 1 m³. The results showed that the ISOJET-B impeller design showed promising performance under BIOX® reactor conditions. Scale-up with the ISOJET-B was done in order to apply it in the 21 m³ live volume test reactor at Fairview mine in South Africa. At Fairview tests were performed using model systems and eventually under real plant conditions with BIOX® slurries. The results were a success and confirmed that the scale-up factors determined during the testing at EKATO?s technology center could be substantiated in the ?model scale? 25 m³ reactor. Testing under the actual process conditions showed that all design parameters were within the desired range to be considered an excellent leaching performance. This successful joint development shows the importance of a close cooperation of technology licensors or end-users and equipment suppliers. It is vital for understanding all factors influencing the mixing performance of processes. Exercises such as this will provide equipment suppliers and plant operators more confidence in managing further scale ups at ever larger engineered plants.

• A new curriculum for combined liberal arts-engineering education has been announced by 6 middle western colleges. The plan involves three years of ;study at one of the 5 liberal arts colleges and two years and a summer of 'engineering work at Case; graduates receive both the A.B. and B.S. degrees. * A new kind of mining is being pioneered by a pest Virginia coal operator which enables four men to produce 800 tons of coal a day. The machine that makes this possible is a giant auger, 5 ft in diam and 100 ft long. Together with the carriage in which it is moved about, it weighs 60 tons. A mobile, but separate power plant of 1000 hp drives it. ' * The Sorel smelter, which will reduce Allard Lake titanium ores, will utilize five 6-electrode rectangular electric furnaces. Furnace hearth size will be about 18x50 ft, and the furnace will smelt about 300 tons of ore per day, producing 100 tons of iron and 130 tons of 70 pct Ti02 slag. The furnaces will be fed continuously by gravity from charge bins, and tap at intervals of 4 hr or more. Slag will be transferred to a high speed casting machine, using cast iron molds, then crushed for shipment to pigment producers. The iron will be treated to reduce its sulphur content to 0.03 to 0.05 pct, and then cast into small pigs or ingots for shipment to steel mills. • Flying of North Africa's first airborne mangetometer survey was completed this month, covering approximately 20,000 sq km in north central Tunisia for Gulf Exploration Co.'s program there. Mapping was completed in less than 30 days. •Yore than 9000 employees of 11 electric companies are enrolled in a 6-hr program that successfully informs workers on the principles of the American economic system. The course is given by the Middle West Service Co. which claims that before and after employee opinion polls show that the course instilled a better understanding of free enterprise and consequently a favorable response to it. •According to a report issued by the American Geological Institute there will be 2865 graduates in geology, including advanced degrees from U.S. colleges in 1950. This supply of geologists compares with requirements for 1278 at the professional and subprofessional levels. The report contains a detailed statistical study of the supply and demand situation for geologists in the 1949-50 period. •The dark cloud of over-production in the bituminous coal industry has a silver lining, according to Natural Resources Notes. Closing marginal mines, mostly strip and truck mines, will result in lower average costs and higher quality of the coal still produced. The producers that will then constitute the industry will be properly equipped and adequately financed to carry forward an intensive campaign to holdd and increase the markets for bituminous coal. •A light, compact, highly reliable blasting machine which does not rely for its effectiveness on the operator's skill is being tested by the Army Engineers. Operating under all climatic conditions from -65 to 125F, the 50-cap machine consists of a springwound do generator and is waterproof.

Introduction In 1987, the US economy continued to grow steadily, reaching an annual rate of $4.6 trillion in the last quarter. The value of domestically processed mineralbased materials rose slightly to $250 billion. The value of US metals rose sharply to more than $7 billion. Industrial minerals rose slightly to $18 billion recycled scrap was valued at $4 billion. Metal prices rose sharply toward year-end. A number of mining and metal companies experienced increased profitability, fostering more optimism about the future. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and federal debt continue to rise. 244 million citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 9% to 7.1 million units, but truck and bus production rose 9% to 3.8 million units. New housing starts fell 10% to 1.6 million units. Excess productive capacity exists not only in the US, but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering stiff competition from others, as well as increasing competition from newer engi¬neered materials. Domestic production of plastics rose 9% to 25 Mt (27 million st) - on a volume basis, double all metals. Some 7% of petroleum goes to make petrochemicals including plastics. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials in 1987 were valued at $37 billion and exports at $24 billion. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials, including many classified as strategic and critical. In December, the Congress mandated that any major changes in stockpile goals be made only by law, and that the Department of Defense submit annually detailed stockpile supply/demand analyses. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing interest about chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The National Critical Materials Council continued to monitor the US materials position. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve continues in effect through Sept. 30, 1989. Under the DPA, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. Further consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American defense industrial base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 2% to 825 Mt (910 million st) valued at $21 billion. Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 56% of US electricity. Exports included 42 Mt (51 million st) of metallurgical coal and 24 Mt (27 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $3.3 billion. Domestic petroleum production fell 5% to 480 Mm' (3 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 4% to 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals: Raw steel production - a major consumer of many minerals - rose 7% to 79 Mt (87 million st). It was brought to the attention of the government in October 1942 through an application to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for a development loan, supported by a report by Henry W. Nichols. Nichols' sampling of two outcrops containing copper silicate and his geologic map indicated that a minable body of copper ore might be developed. The Federal Geological Survey was requested to examine the property. The Survey mapped the geology in March 1943 and cut a few check samples, which substantially confirmed Nichols' sampling of the outcrops and a few shallow workings. The geologists of the Survey recommended some test drilling by the Bureau of Mines. The property was examined by the author and Wm. D. Hughes, associate engineer of the Bureau of Mines on March 22 and 26, 1943, and a preliminary drilling campaign was recommended. Five shallow churn-drill holes totaling 1,480 feet were put down under the supervision of Chas. A. Kumke, one of the Bureau's engineers, from November 23, 1943, to January 13, 1944. This work indicated that the deposit extended deeper than the 350-foot depth attained in the deepest hole and might have very considerable areal extent. Additional funds were allotted, and the drilling contract was extended twice to a final maximum of 17,000 feet with 2,000 feet maximum depth of hole. Drilling was continued by the Bureau of Mines until February 2, 1945, when 15,844 feet of hole had been drilled. The Magna Copper Co. took options on this and adjoining property in September 1944 and commenced drilling with two machines. It also engaged the two contract drills used by the Bureau after it stopped drilling. It exercised its options in August 1945 and organized the San Manuel Copper Corp. to operate the property. That company is continuing to explore the ore body with six churn drills. Thomas Lyon took options early in 1945 on holdings adjoining the San Manuel property on the east and is operating two churn drills. Exploration up to the completion of the last holes started by the Bureau of Mines indicated a block of ore 3,100 feet long, 400 to 800 feet wide, and 500 to 900 feet thick, and averaging about 0.8 percent copper. Subsequent drilling showed that the ore body extends considerably beyond this block. The axis of the ore body strikes about N. 61° E. Copper minerals are disseminated in hydrothermally altered quartz monzonite and monzonite porphyry. Ore outcrops in two small areas over the northeast part of the block. Elsewhere the copper-bearing rocks are capped by Gila conglomerate, which thickens toward the west and south. Drilling showed that the ore is in a thick, tabular body with a steep dip to the south. The ore body lies near the surface in the northeastern part of the block. The south side of the block is much farther below the surface than the north side. There the upper part of the copper-bearing rocks is lightly mineralized, so that the hanging wall of minable ore lies deeper than the base of the conglomerate cap, which thickens southward.

"The comminution process is estimated to be only 1% efficient, resulting in waste energy dissipated as heat, noise, and vibration. Energy recovery from grinding circuits has not been implemented mainly because recovering heat from the surface of the grinding mill or from mill slurry can impede operation, increase maintenance requirements, and prolong plant shutdown time (and production). However, currently very little information is available in the public domain regarding the amount of waste energy and that potentially recoverable in the grinding circuit of a mineral processing plant. Availability of such information could drive innovation and improve decision-making regarding opportunities for waste energy recovery. The Canadian Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) has initiated a study with CanmetMINING and mining industry partners to develop a model to map the energy flows in grinding circuits and to quantify the potential for energy recovery. The paper outlines the underlying fundamentals and data requirements for use in the model and then focuses on quantifying the energy recovery potential of the semi-autogenous grinding and ball mill circuits at the Agnico Eagle Goldex Division. Results show that most of the electrical energy (over 75%) is used to heat the slurry, leaving only a relatively small amount of it to achieve mechanical work (~9%). INTRODUCTIONCanmetMINING commissioned a study in 2013 to better understand the barriers for adoption of new technologies in the mining industry (MNP, 2013). The conclusions highlighted the importance of enhancing industry/regulator engagement and communication to raise awareness and improve the industry’s comfort level with new technologies.In November 2014, the Green Mining Innovation Advisory Committee (GMIAC) held a workshop to explore the possibility of accelerating the uptake of green mining technologies by bringing together key stakeholders among the mining value chain to address industry priorities. Participants included representatives from mining companies and associations, academia, provincial governments and federal departments and organizations. Two key priority areas emerged at the workshop: i) energy saving, and ii) water management."

Three aspects of gas deliverability are presented in this paper. The first treats with the gas deliverability or availability of a normal depletion-type dry gas field. Such encompasses not only the period of stabilized constant rate, but more so, the "tailings" when a fixed abandonment pressure is reached and the rate by necessity must decline. A comprehensive work plot is offered, developed from mathematics herein included, that removes the triai-and-errnr computations that attended such undertakings in the past. The second part treats with the discount factor of the open flow potential constant from what is observed initially in testing a gas well to what is evidenced when stabilization is reached. This prevails in tight formations, such as the Kansas Hugoton field which is offered as the example. The means of establishing this factor are pressure build-up curves which, as sustained by analytical deductions, reproduce this entire period of transient flow under conditions of a constant rate influx. Finally, what is offered in this paper is the deliverability performance of an exceedingly rich gas condensate field producing from a tight formation. The example shown is the Knox Bromide field in Oklahoma, producing from the Bromide formations. The results are ominous, showing early reduction in permeability to gas pow, due to the retrograde condensate forming in the pore space, with the attending early logging-up of these wells. The analytics of lowered permeability are incorporated in the gas deliverability formula along with the PVT data that gives the increased condensate liquid saturation as the gas flows to the well bore. This paper would not be complete without a critique oflered at the end. With the many gas wells now in production and those that have completed their life, there has been no factual information collected by any source as to what constitutes that permeability range where a gas well would be unimpaired in its gas deliverability by the presence of rich condensate content, and the lowered range where such would be harmful. This question confronts all producers. INTRODUCTION Various aspects of gas deliverability are presented in this paper that includes depletion-type reservoirs, deteriora- tion factor of the gas deliverability constant, and the performance of a rich gas condensate reservoir producing from a tight sand. With respect to the presentation of gas deliverability and its tailings for depletion-type gas reservoirs, one notes that this is essentially the information offered by every gas transmission company and producer appearing before the Federal Power Commission for Letters of Conveyance in the dedication of reserves. In the ordinary procedure, as many engage upon this study, trial-and-error calculations are included, particularly as apply to the tailings. For many years one of the writers has employed mathematical analyses to perform this step and avoid the complexities so associated. In the preparation of this paper these analyses have been amplified to include any slope n for the open flow potential relationship for which the tailings can be determined from Fig. 1. With reference to the deterioration or discount factor of the open flow potential constant as such occurs in the gas deliverability formula, this for the most part has been an unexplored subject. Although the issue first appeared in the Kansas Hugoton field, where such was surmised but only recently resolved, this situation of a deterioration of the gas deliverability constant can occur wherever dry gas production from a tight sand is encountered. The first concerted attacks upon this problem were the presentations of Hurst' and Goodson' before the Kansas Corporation Commission to show that transient fluid flow and unsteady-state flow formulas prevailed. This was amplified later before the Federal Power Commission3 to show that this deterioration factor could be identified from pressure build-up curves. This has been reported by McMahon.4 Its importance to the industry merits the review of these essential features in completing the program on the aspects of gas deliverability. Finally, as illustrated here, for a low permeability formation such as the Knox Bromide field where the gas is rich, representing some 165 bbl of condensate per MMcf of effluent gas, the gas deliverability can be of limited extent in the life of the field, leaving substantial amounts of condensate and gas unrecovered. In cases such as this, gas cycling is mandatory. This is particularly revealed by the fluid mechanics introduced here, employing factual field as well as laboratory data, to show this-restriction upon gas deliverability. IT is necessary occasionally to use aluminum-alloy sheet where moderately elevated temperatures are encountered. Considerable attention has been directed toward determining the influence of "artificial aging" on the room-temperature properties of the precipitation-hardenable alloys, as testified by numerous company reports and by references 1 to 4. Investigations on the properties at elevated temperatures are few, however,5-7 and have not always covered the range of times and temperatures of greatest interest. The present investigation was instituted to overcome this deficiency. The work was done for the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board, under the supervision of the War Metallurgy Committee, as a part of the "restricted" Project NRC-548. It has been released for publication by the Office of Production Research and Development. As is well known, the high-strength aluminum alloys achieve their remarkable properties as a result of precipitation-hardening. In production they are subjected to a solution heat-treatment followed by quenching, to retain the supersaturated solid solution. The solution treatment is followed by "aging" (precipitation-hardening) either at room temperature or at a suitable elevated temperature. A considerable increase in tensile and compressive yield stresses results from precipitation at room temperature ("natural aging"). Through the elevated-temperature process ("artificial aging") it is possible to obtain values of yield stress considerably higher than those attainable by natural aging. The increase in yield stress is accompanied by a smaller gain in ultimate tensile stress and by a decrease in elongation. Further exposure results in "overaging," attended by a steady decrease in yield stress. The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy is the focus of a world-class effort in providing technical solutions to the minerals industry. The 85 FTE staff are drawn from the CentreÆs five joint venture research partners comprising universities (Curtin, Murdoch and Qld) and government research agencies (CSIRO and WA Dept of Industry and Resources). There are also 12 industry partners, representing most of the leading mining companies in the world. Around 45 postgraduate students, mainly PhDs, make a significant contribution to the research effort. Total annual expenditure on R&D is around $17 million.Hydrometallurgy activities encompass both fundamental and applied research across the alumina, gold and base metal sectors. The Centre is now growing its client base into overseas markets, particularly North America, South Africa and Europe. Quality, strategic R&D by the Parker Centre is seen by the industry as an attractive investment. A recent survey of the industry revealed an estimated ten-fold return based on direct costs of research to the client. In addition, the Parker Centre has a strong commitment to education of postgraduate students wishing to enter the mining industry as well as providing specialist courses for those technical professionals already employed in the industry. The wide range of employment opportunities in the mining industry is reflected in the diversity of the disciplines amongst the CentreÆs research team, eg extractive metallurgy, chemistry, biotechnology, physics, engineering, molecular modelling, microscopy, geology and computational fluid dynamics. How does an atomic force microscope and molecular modelling improve our ability to control gypsum scaling or understand crystallisation of alumina in a Bayer plant? Can a biologist contribute to the problem of the slow leaching of copper from chalcopyrite? Why are computational fluid dynamics and lasers the basis of understanding how to make thickeners work more efficiently. Can you combine a PhD or Honours degree with industry experience? What is crud and why is nickel stressed? These are typical examples of the CentreÆs research activities and demonstrate the contributions of its multi-disciplinary teams which keep the Australian mining industry at the cutting edge of advanced global technology.
