This study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain variations in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates in some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity. crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents. Introduction When it is stated that the aggregate from one point is inferior to that from another, it must not be construed to mean that the gravel is unfit for use. The classification upon which such aggregate ratings are based is largely arbitrary, thus inferiority or superiority is merely relative. Samples of gravel were selected from stockpiles at the dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority under construction, from the stockpiles of private companies along the river, and from samples taken by the gravel-exploration barge of the T. V. A. One hundred or more gravels of each size studied were selected at random by taking small handfuls while walking around the piles. These were separated according to the different mineral or rock constituents present, and the percentage of each constituent was obtained by counting. At least three such samples were taken from each size, and all checked with one another within a few per cent. The results were then averaged. In order to check on the accuracy of such sampling, a whole sample was taken from one point after the gravel was thoroughly mixed. The two methods gave approximately identical results. This paper describes the development of a trim blast design to improve the stability of a final pit wall. Description is given of the effects of rock characteristics, rock type, and pit plans on the blast design. Currently, six benches have been mined with trim blasting. A more stable final wall has resulted and the successful program has reduced mining costs over an extended time period. Low cost blast monitoring and field observation were used to determine peak particle velocity and blast damage. Using criteria developed from this relationship, trim blasts were designed and evaluated.

At least 300 engineers and operators are expected to attend. Birmingham, the industrial city and iron, and steel center of the South, has been called the "Magic City." This is the sixth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data plus more than 100 new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. An article in the December 1984 Kentucky Coal Journal could have far reaching applications. It explains that a banking firm examined the "reserve risk" as one of six factors for analysis when financing a coal project. The firm concluded that coal reserves in Kentucky are worth an average of $0.29/t ($0.26 per st) in-place. The banking firm based this in-place value on its examination of more than 50 leases. In-place value is especially important when trying to establish a mineral value for a given deposit. Ernie Lehman wrote to this author after last year's column appeared and he quoted the lease rates for lead and zinc on federal land. He states, from first hand information, that the leases are based on a percentage of net smelter return as follows: 4% for the first five years, 4.5% for the next five years, and 5% thereafter. The figures used in last year's column ($ per st) came from dividing reported royalty income by reported production. The information reported last year merely translates the results of the net smelter return (as written in the lease) to royalty income per ton to the US Government for the various years. Statistics from the Minerals Management Service of the Federal Government show that oil and gas account for 40% and 53%, respectively, of the Federal royalty income. Coal accounts for about 4% and all other minerals, the remaining 3%. Oil and gas leases are mostly at 12.5%. Most of the coal leases are at 12.5% for surface mining operations and 8% for underground mining. Many of the other commodities are leased at 5%, which has been true for decades. Relative to Federal leases, this year's table shows some percentages and some costs per ton. This was done to give information about the leases and also to show income produced by various commodities. Note that some commodities have a variation in $/ton even though the royalty percent is the same. These variations result from a combination of factors that influence the value of a mineral commodity. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; *quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give the location - either by state, US geographic area or Canadian province; the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cu ft), tons (/T, 2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.7646 m3 1 cu ft = 0.2832 m3 1st=0.9078t 1 acre = 0.4047 hm or m2 In several cases, the royalty is a percentage of the sales price of the finished product and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. Acid rain legislation, the new tax package, excess coal capacity, the effects of low oil prices, how to increase coal exports: These were among the items discussed at the May 4-7, American Mining Congress coal convention in Pittsburgh. Some 2000 people attended the convention, which also offered 15 technical sessions. As always, the state of the domestic coal industry might be characterized as "long-term promise, short-term problems." And one of these problems is acid rain. Acid rain The proposed acid rain legislation in Congress could be the most costly piece of environmental legislation ever written. In its present form, the measure could cost the nation up to $110 billion over the next 15 years. Rep. Henry Waxman's (D-CA) bill, HR 4567, would mandate large reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants. The bill has more than 150 Republican and Democratic cosponsors. Ed Addison is president of the Southern Co., one of the nation's largest utilities and users of domestic coal. Addison noted that America's electric utility industry buys and uses nearly 85% of the coal consumed in this country. He said Waxman's bill would drive up prices of low-sulfur coal, raise electric rates, and force miners out of work in high-sulfur coal regions. In repeating a standard coal industry response, Addison said the Clean Air Act is doing the job. In recent years, while coal use has gone up, S02 emissions have gone down. Current air pollution standards are producing cleaner air, he said. Despite concern over HR 4567, the bill's future is uncertain. Several coal industry executives and analysts predict the bill will die under weight of opposition from coal, utility, and steel interests. But the acid rain issue is gaining momentum. Future legislation of some kind is likely. Meanwhile, research continues to develop clean coal technology to deal with the S02 problem. Commercialization of these front-end technologies currently lags public sentiment for acid rain legislation. Ground water runoff and contamination is another area where future legislation would seem likely. Already, one bill has been introduced in Congress. A second is being drafted. The impact of such legislation may be significant according to Bruce Leavitt, a hydrogeologist with Consolidation Coal Co. He said if current proposals are adopted, there will be more federal, state, and local government involvement in ground water regulation. In any event, the coal industry can expect to see more emphasis on preventing acid mine drainage and on water replacement, according to Leavitt. He urged those in the coal industry to present information about mining and ground water. That is needed to prevent misdirected state and federal programs, he said. Another coal industry concern is excess capacity. The industry has the mines, equipment, and employees to produce 15% more coal than at present. Problem is, the markets are not there. Slower-than-predicted growth in electric utility coal use has kept sales sluggish. There are also tax uncertainties. Congress is considering repeal of the investment tax credit and elimination of black lung payments and excise taxes as deductible expenses. One analyst estimates the coal industry would lose $1.1 billion in five years, if the changes are approved. In addition, there are the usual concerns about excessive governmental regulations involving safety and environmental matters. Bill Kegel, for example, said these regulations mean extra costs and delays in developing mines. Kegel is president and chief executive officer of the Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Co. More than half the electrical power in the US is generated by coal-fired plants. That percentage could slip by a couple of points as nuclear generators come on-line the next few years. About 1990, though, we will see the end of US nuclear plant construction. No new nuclear plants have been scheduled since 1978. So any growth in electric power use should benefit the coal industry. BethEnergy - High Power Mountain During 1985, BethEnergy - a Bethlehem Steel Corp. - subsidiary developed High Power Mountain, a 1.8-Mt/a (2-million-stpy) surface mine in West Virginia. Construction saw movement of more than 3 hm3 (4 million cu yds) of earth. A computerized 544 t/h (600 stph) heavy media cyclone prep plant and a 3.6-kt/h (4000-stph) railroad loadout facility were built in six months. And a 5.6-km (3.5-mile) railroad spur and loop bridging a major highway were constructed. Larry Willison of BethEnergy noted the project's ambitious construction schedule. It was forced by the need for the project to be market driven and - lacking available capital - externally financed. BethEnergy did several things before obtaining with Detroit Edison a market for 0.9 Mt/a (1 million stpy) of coal. Willison said his company prospected and proved the eastern half of its 8-km2

The proposed amendments follow: Article I1 (regarding who may become members and how) to be amended to read as follows: "Membership in this Institute shall be of three classes-corporate, individual, and honorary. Any company, firm, or individual operator actually engaged in the mining of coal within the territory of this Institute may become a corporate member on application, and by consent of a majority of the members present at any stated meeting. Any person, who is directly engaged or interested: in some branch of coal-mining may become an individual member upon application, and by consent of a majority of the members present at any stated meeting. Honorary members may be elected at the discretion of the Institute."

We rejoice that the world-war is ended. We are proud of the part played by the English-speaking peoples-all doing equal honor to the traditions they share in common. One of the compensations for the calamity of the past four years is the fact that the Briton and the American, striving together in the cause of human liberty, have learned to understand and to respect each other. The mother country entered the fight resolutely at the beginning, while yet unready to meet the carefully prepared onslaught of the enemy; then the sons from the overseas dominions rallied to the old battle-cry eagerly and effectively; and last, but not least, the stepsons came from across the Atlantic, speaking the same speech, playing the same game, and fighting in the same clean way. It was a great foregathering of those that use the language of Shakespeare and idealize the principles of liberty for which the friends and associates of Shakespeare stood sponsor three centuries ago. At a time like this it is pleasant to dwell upon the fact that the liberal Englishmen who organized the Virginia company were the pioneers of self-government on the American continent. The Virginia Assembly, convoked in 1619, was the first example of a domestic parliament to regulate internal affairs on this side of the Atlantic.2 The Governor of Virginia, Sir Edwin Sandys, had been a pupil of Richard Hooker at Oxford and from that political teacher he and his friends had imbibed the idea of combining civil liberty with constitutional order. To this group of large-minded Englishmen, the American colonists owed their liberal charters and their successive triumphs over the royal prerogative. Let it be noted that the American colonists had to deal with James II and George III, the two smallest minds in the list of British kings. Another historical note more pleasant to record, is the connection between the two principal groups of American settlers. In 1608 when the Pilgrim fathers, William Brewster and John Robinson, led their Separatist congregation to Holland and there prepared the expedition to America, they were assisted by Sandys and the Virginia Council, who were willing to share their privileges with them. When the Pilgrims set sail in 1620 they had the promise, obtained by Sandys from King James, that they should have freedom of worship,

In 1953, Dr N Fisher of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, acting on behalf of the Society of Economic Geologists, which is considering the sponsoring of a uniform system of nomenclature for ore reserves, enquired from The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy whether it had ever considered this subject and particularly whether it had ever set up any standard definitions or specifications with regard to ore reserves.As this had not been done, but was thought to be desirable, the Council of The Institute appointed a Committee consisting of H H Dunkin, Associate Professor of Mining Engineering, University of Melbourne (Convenor); E A Rudd, Professor of Economic Geology, University of Adelaide; J D Campbell, Chief Geologist of Western Mining Corporation; and the writer, to consider the report on this subject.In December 1953, the Committee submitted its frrst report to the Council and this report (reproduced here as an Appendix) was widely circulated among member companies and engineers, with an invitation to comment on the proposals. A large number of replies was received and studied.After studying the replies the Committee issued a second report, in part as follows:From these replies we have learned that the suggestions made in the frrst report of the Committee are unacceptable to most of those interested, on one or all of the following grounds:a. number of categoriesb. defmition of categoriesc. nomenclature.It is also apparent that all alternatives suggested in the various replies would likewise be unacceptable to the majority of those replying.As a result, we have come to the conclusion that neither this Committee nor any other could at present and in the present state of opinion on the subject make recommendations regarding classification and nomenclature of ore reserves which would be acceptable to a sufficiently large proportion of members.It seems to us now that the objective of a widely applicable and acceptable system of classification and nomenclature, one that could be endorsed by The Institute and ultimately become standard practice in the industry, requires more than compromise between present conflicting views... it requires first a foundation of substantial agreement on the essential facts, implications and range of ore reserve estimation. This does not yet exist and it is evident that much additional analysis of present practice and opinion must be undertaken before any further systhesis is attempted.

Successful implementation of electronic data capture devices and computerised tools have enabled many mining operations to improve their competitive position with an improvement in the utilisation of the key assets, mineral resources, capital mining equipment and human resources. Real Time Mine Management Systems are designed to direct the emphasis away from collecting data and focus decision makers on the real issues with well-presented and reliable information. The systems provide a common stream of information to enable senior management, operations, maintenance, technical and process plant staff to make complementary decisions based on reliable, accurate and timely data. The resulting tangible benefits can be delivered in different forms depending on the mining method, ore type, workplace culture and the current competitive position. Mine management systems have the potential to transform a traditional mine operation into a learning organisation with an improved understanding of the critical performance issues and enable development of relevant strategies to continually identify and eliminate operational inefficiencies. The effectiveness of each strategy and operational change can be accurately monitored and its success (or otherwise) will be quantified. The latest downturn in the world metal prices has forced many mining companies to focus on cost reduction and productivity improvements as a means of remaining competitive. Maintenance represents a significant proportion of the overall operating costs in the mining industry. A structured proactive maintenance approach such as Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) can achieve significant cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition monitoring systems are becoming increasingly commonplace and have the potential to identify problems prior to failure. Detection of equipment degradation prior to failure will enable repairs to be scheduled, thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production.

High-grade cobalt concentrates were produced from the complex Blackbird ore with very good recovery in continuous pilot-plant operations in which a low-grade bulk cobaltite-pyrite flotation concentrate was roasted in a multiple-hearth furnace to oxidize the pyrite selectively. The cobaltite was floated from the resulting calcine. THE existence of the cobalt-copper deposits in the Blackbird district, Lemhi County, Idaho, has been known for many years. However, these deposits have not yet been exploited successfully because of the low grade of the ore, absence of information on ore reserves, and lack of feasible methods for concentrating and recovering cobalt from the ore. In 1941, when it appeared that World War II might interfere seriously with imports of cobalt from overseas, the U. S. Bureau of Mines started an extensive mining and metallurgical investigation of the Blackbird deposits. Exploration by trenching and drilling1 indicated that ore reserves were adequate to warrant consideration of large-scale exploitation. A process for producing high-grade cobalt concentrates from the ore was developed at the Salt Lake City Station of the Bureau,2 and hydrometallurgical procedures for producing cobalt metal or oxide from the concentrates were developed at the Boulder City Station.3 The Howe Sound Co., through a subsidiary, the Calera Mining Co., carried out further exploratory work, which increased probable ore reserves to a tonnage commensurate with a large investment in mine, mill, transportation facilities, and refinery. Simultaneously, the metallurgical staff of the company, working in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines, further investigated the metallurgical problems. It was the opinion of both groups that pilot-plant testing was required to translate laboratory results into plant operation. In general, the Blackbird ore has a high content of pyrite and some pyrrhotite and contains 0.5 to 1 pet cobalt and 1 to 2 pet copper, which are present essentially as cobaltite and chalcopyrite. The copper can be recovered readily as a high-grade concentrate by selective notation. The cobalt then can be recovered as a bulk sulphide concentrate assaying 4 to 5 pct cobalt, but no satisfactory procedure for separating the cobalt from the pyrite and pyrrhotite directly by flotation had been found. The method developed by the Bureau for producing a high-grade cobalt concentrate is essentially an application of the old Horwood process of selective roasting.4 The bulk sulphide concentrate is roasted to form an oxide coating on the iron mineral particles, and the calcine is then treated by flotation. The oxide coating prevents the iron minerals from floating so that it is possible to obtain a high recovery of cobalt in concentrates assaying more than 20 pct cobalt. Laboratory tests by metallurgists of both the Bureau and the Howe Sound Co. had indicated the optimum roasting temperature to be 425° to 450°C. At lower temperatures the rate of oxidation of the iron minerals is too low, whereas at higher temperatures substantial quantities of cobalt are rendered water-soluble. Because of its high sulphur content (35 to 40 pct), the bulk concentrate tends to continue to burn after it has reached the optimum roasting temperature. Although excessive temperatures could be avoided in the small-scale laboratory furnaces, there was considerable doubt that the temperature could be controlled properly in industrial equipment. To provide material for the pilot-plant tests, the Calera Mining Co. installed a small, temporary flotation mill at the Blackbird property and treated

he properties of some of the common fracturing oils, such as sand-falling rate, fluid loss and viscasity, are a function of the three major constituents of the oil. These are: asphaltic material, parafin waxes and a base oil. The base oil can be either high or low viscosity. Asphaltic material increases viscosity by thickening the oil, decreasing the rate of fall of sand through the oil. at temperatures up to 200" F. When large arnorrnts of parafin wax are present, much of the wax i.s not dissolved, but is present in the form of rnicroscopic crystals. 7'his, of course is limited to temperatures below the melting points of waxe.s. As a result, parafin waxes clo not function primarily as thickener.7, but rother as bullting materials. The functiori of wax, without asphaltic material, in a low viscosity base oil is uniquely unlike that of wax with asphalt coexistent in the oil. The resulting difierence in wax crystal size governs the sand-falling rate to a large extent. An ideal type of fracturing oil is one containing neither asphalt nor waxes. In such cases, the viscosity and resulting low sand-falling rate are apparently due to soluble resin- ous hydrocarbons, which are compatible with formation oils. INTRODUCTION Since the introduction of hydraulic fracturing as a method of stimulating production from oil and gas wells, a variety of fluids have been employed to open the fractures and carry the propping agent. Such fluids include gels, emulsions, and oils. In the latter category, the use of refined oils has increased tremendously, and it is probably safe to assume that such oils represent more than one-half of the total fluid used in fracturing. The general acceptance of refined oils for fracturing can be accounted for on the basis of their relatively low cost and general applicability. To minimize transportation costs, such refined oils are generally obtained within the local areas of operation. As a result there are several kinds of oil used in different areas, with a wide variation in the basic composition. These types may vary from a fair grade of lubricating stock to a highly viscous cut-back asphalt. or road oil. Originally, little attention was paid to the composition of the oils used for fracturing, and any oil which would carry sand was considered satisfactory. Recently, however, service companies and well operators have become more concerned with the type of oils used for fracturing. With this in mind, the present work was undertaken to evaluate and compare many widely used fracturing oils to determine which constituents were most desirable for fracturing purposes. Some of the important properties of fracturing fluids are sand-falling rate, viscosity, and fluid loss. Other properties, that are actually of no less importance, include flash point, pour point, emulsifying tendencies with formation brines, and compatability with the formation oils. This discussion has been limited, however, to the first mentioned properties in order to give some idea of the general composition of the refined oils, how they function, and why. PROPERTIES OF FRACTURING OILS The properties of fracturing oils are a function of the three major constituents of the oil. LIBERIAN ore has been called the richest iron ore mined in the world, and thus far, the output from the Liberian Mining Co.'s Bomi Hills mine has lived up to its reputation. Iron content has been variously given as 68.47 pct to 68.825 pct. A recent United Nations survey gave it first place, surplanting the previously top-rated Swedish product. The first shipment of Liberian ore to the United States reached Baltimore in June, 1952 and went into blast furnaces at Republic Steel's Cleveland plant, where excellent results were reported. The physical make-up of the ore was hard, dense lumps, free of fines and with ideal size distribution. The Bomi hills mines were scheduled to be in full operation by the end of 1952. At the close of 1951, 200,000 tons of ore had been delivered to Baltimore. Liberian Mining Co. states that production is about 90,000 tons of ore per month at present. Between 1200 and 1500 men are employed at the mine site, with about 25 pct of them Americans. The Bomi Hill project was financed with the aid of the Export Import bank, which loaned Liberia Mining part of the sum needed to initiate and put the development into production. No definite expansion plans are in the making but extensive diamond drilling is being pursued. Original estimates of annual production for Bomi Hills ran in the neighborhood of 1.5 million tons, but the figure is no longer applicable. Liberia's potential as an iron producing country has been known for a long time, but the physical obstacles in the way of large scale production were such as to prohibit even contemplation of the project. Until recent years, the only route from the mine site to Monrovia was a foot trail. Once to the coast, over swamps and unbridged rivers, the ore was still useless because of the lack of loading facilities. Transportation Solved One problem was solved with the completion of the artificial harbor at Monrovia. Harbor construction was well under way when the mine project began in 1948. The island location of Monrovia also made the building of a bridge across the St. Paul River necessary. The 980 ft reinforced concrete structure, accommodating railroad and vehicular traffic, was opened in 1949. Meanwhile, preliminary work on railroad construction started. Grading was completed quickly. In April, 1951, the first train made the trip from Monrovia to the Bomi Hills. About half of the cost of the entire project went into railroad construction. More than 2200 men, often forced to resort to primitive methods, were engaged in clearing a path through the heavy forests between the mine and port. Swamps were drained and filled, and bridges, including the William V. S. Tubman, named for the Liberian President, were constructed. At the port, a Robbins Conveyor Belt Co., orehandling plant was installed. Ships can be loaded from the stockpile at the rate of 3000 tons per hr and vessels need spend only one day in port. Liberian Mining is operating under an 80 year lease, giving the company exclusive mining rights to all minerals, except gold, platinum, and diamonds, within a 40 mile radius of Bomi Hills. The contract provides a fixed royalty to the Liberian Government of five cents per ton of ore extracted, and a premium -based on the New York market price for Bessemer-grade pig iron. THE treatment by chlorination of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company's ores was first accomplished, early in 1886, by a works having a capacity of 25,000 tons per annum. Shortly afterwards another works was established, capable of dealing with 50,000 tons per annum. The extraction of gold was originally successful and satisfactory, but running expenses were high, averaging £2 19s. 6d. per ton of ore treated. These works were believed to be the largest chlorination plants in the world at that time. As might have been expected, the mechanical details and chemical process had not been perfected, and, moreover, both works were hurriedly built, and operating expenses were not then considered of such prime importance, as the ore at that time was of very high grade; the large quantities of low grade ore since dealt with not being then considered, since the bulk of it was not even known to be in existence. These two works consisted of rock-breakers, high speed rolls, screens, elevators, &c., for crushing; a large number of small handrabbled reverberatory furnaces for roasting; one-ton chlorination barrels and three-ton leaching vats for chlorination. The transport of ore from crusher to furnaces, from furnaces to chlorination barrels, and the emptying of leaching vats was effected entirely by hand labour. A major new mine to be developed at Pike River during 2005 has been designed to have a minimal impact upon the environment, and an overall net conservation gain. The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand on the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 46 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) holds a 40 year mining permit over the coalfield.   In October 2004, the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through 1.25 km of Department of Conservation land via an access agreement, and the Environment Court issued a number of consents for the development and operation of the mine, in addition to some existing consents.   The underground mine at Pike River is located under land administered by Department of Conservation, and has been designed to avoid or mitigate adverse environmental effects and integrate into the natural bush surroundings. The mine process has been designed to operate within an environmentally sensitive area and will incorporate technologically advanced methods of mining and processing. The mine process involves hydro mining of the coal, and transportation via a 12 km coal water slurry pipeline, to a dewatering complex located on PRCC land. This will ensure that traffic in the Pike River Catchment up to the mine is minimised.   An extensive series of management plans and monitoring programmes will be used to ensure that the environmental effects of the mine activities are minimised, by evaluating the performance of managerial procedures, and physical mechanisms in place to avoid or mitigate the effects. Trial mining and substance management plans in conjunction with an orthophoto and surface monitoring protocol will ensure that surface features, and water ways are protected from any adverse effects. The Blue Duck enhancement, and pest and predator control programme will help ensure that an overall net conservation gain is achieved.   Developing transparent working relationships and good communication with Department of Conservation, Iwi (Ngati Waewae and Ngai Tahu), and local environment groups has been and remains very important in the development of this project.

SANTA Rita del Cobre Grant, as the present Chino property was known in the early part of the nineteenth century, was the scene of the first copper-mining operations of consequence in the territory now included in the United States. As early as 1801, the mines afforded the principal supply of copper for coinage by the Mexican Government. According to an estimate made from old records by H. A. Thorne, now superintendent of mines for the Chino company, about 41,000,- 000 lb. of copper had been produced prior to 1845, when the exploitation of the native copper deposits of the Lake Superior district was started for the first time by white men. B. S. Butler, in Mineral Resources of the United States for 1913, estimated the production from Grant County, New Mexico, from 1845 to 1913, at 134,353,963 1b.-an amazingly precise figure, considering the character of the data that he must have used. As "Grant County" may be interpreted for practical purposes as the Santa Rita district, it seems fair to credit the Chino group with a production of 165,000,000 lb. of copper prior to the time when the modern operations commenced. Unlike Morenci, which, by the way, lies only about 80 miles westerly across the Arizona-New Mexico line, Chino offers no problem as to when its production might properly be classified as coming from a Porphyry Copper. The time is definitely fixed by the starting of the new mill at Hurley in October, 1911. The interval from 1903 to 1913 had witnessed little production of any kind; and prior to that time operations had been confined entirely to the mining of narrow veins or lenses of ore assaying 10 to 15 per cent copper or even more. Mining companies normally establish exploration and research programs originated with actions in embryonic stage. At their early stages of development, these exploration and technological activities are subject to uncertainties that need, first, to be resolved, deciphered or, at least, mitigated for information reporting; and later, for valuation reporting. Under these circumstances, these exploration activities follow a sequence of development phases that range from exploration work to the profile, conceptual, and finally to basic engineering phases and construction. For information reporting, the International Template for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves integrates the minimum standards being adopted by the relevant professional bodies in Australia, Canada, South Africa, Chile, USA, UK, Ireland, and other European countries which set up the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO, www.crirsco.com). These standards are based on the progressive collection of relevant information to reduce present and future uncertainties over time under a context of transparency, materiality, and technical competence. For valuation reporting several procedures have been disclosed and applied. However, in the last decades financial instruments such as real options, decision analysis, and games theory have developed into a niche of great potential for mine valuation applications. The objective of this paper is to provide a summary of the information reporting standards prepared by the Chilean National Commission for the Qualification of Competent Persons in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and show a procedure and an application of real options to the valuation of the sequential development phases of a mine asset from the exploration stage through up to full development.

During the last three or four years I have had occasion to examine, chemically, various samples of matter commonly called flue-dust or cinder, found deposited in the flues and hot-blast chambers and under the boilers of blast furnaces, and also in the flues and under the boilers of puddling and boiling furnaces. Recently several of these examinations mere made quite in detail, and as the results reveal, I believe, information of no inconsiderable importance, I am induced to communicate them to this Institute. THE three principal mines from which the celebrated Salisbury iron ores are obtained are called respectively the "Old Hill," "Davis," and "Chatfield" ore beds, and are situated in the town of Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., on the eastern slope of the Tocconuc range of hills.* The Old Hill Ore Bed is a tract of land of 100 acres, originally granted by the General Court in October, 1731, to be laid out by Daniel Bissell of Windsor. It was soon after surveyed and located by Ezekiel Ashley and John Pell. The descendants of Ashley are still proprietors in the mine. The supply of ore has been very abundant, and for many years was easily obtained, but latterly the cost of raising has been greatly increased. Up to about 1840 the average yield was estimated to be about 4500 tons per annum. The production has gradually increased until the average yield at pres¬ent is estimated at 15,000 tons annually. The largest production in any one year was about 20,000 tons. The proprietors of this mine were incorporated many years ago under the style of "The Salisbury Ore Bed Proprietors." Ashanti Goldfields CompanyÆs (AshantiÆs) most recent development is the Geita Project in the Lake Victoria Goldfield of NW Tanzania. It comprises six distinct gold deposits within two mineralised trends: Nyankanga, Lone Cone, Geita Hill (Geita trend) and Matandani, Kukuluma and Area 3 West (Kukuluma trend). Between 1936 and 1966, the Geita area produced an estimated 5.5 M tonnes of ore from five underground deposits at an average recovered grade of 5.3 g/t. The discovery of Nyankanga was made by Ashanti in 1996 from RAB drilling of a +100 ppb Au anomaly in laterite soil above ferricrete cover. The Kukuluma trend was discovered by SAMAX Resources (taken over by Ashanti in 1998) between 1996 and 1997 from RC drilling of a +80 ppb Au laterite soil anomaly. Oxide facies banded iron formation (BIF) of the Upper Nyanzian System forms prominent topographic ridges and is the dominant host lithology for gold mineralisation. The ridges are flanked by felsic tuff units which lie stratigraphically above. Syn-genetic lamprophyre (vogesite) and post-genetic felsic dykes are also seen in the Geita trend. At Nyankanga a granodiorite-diorite suite has intruded as dykes and sills into BIF from a plug centred on a WNW fault and has produced wallrock alteration assemblages similar to those seen in Cu-porphyry systems (potassic, propylitic, etc) as well as sulphide and gold deposition. However, the main ore-grade mineralisation (as in the rest of the Geita trend) is controlled by low-to-medium angle structures dipping north-west and north with numerous splays in the hanging wall. High-grade shoots at Nyankanga plunge to the west and to the north-west, being lithologically and fault-controlled respectively. At Geita Hill the higher grade shoots are controlled by fold noses in BIF dipping to the north. Free gold occurs within fractures of sulphides. The deposits of Kukuluma and Matandani occur on an ancient (possibly Cretaceous) erosional plateau and are related to two WNW to NW trending shear zones, discordant to the local strike of the BIF sequence. Complete oxidation occurs up to 120 m depth and there is a strong supergene component to the gold distribution. Primary gold mineralisation is divisible into two distinct assemblages: arsenopyriteûpyrrhotiteûmagnetiteûchlorite associated with brecciated cherts and pyrite associated with shaley banded ironstones. Area 3W is most likely the fault-displaced extension of the same mineralised trend and comprises thin, intermittent zones of high-grade gold mineralisation occurring adjacent to a ridge in banded cherts and minor BIF. Current resources (measured, indicated and inferred) for the project are estimated at 89.24 Mt at an average grade of 4.17 g/t (11.97 Moz of contained gold) at a 1.0 g/t cut-off grade. Of this 9.83 Moz is within the Geita trend and 2.14 Moz is within the Kukuluma trend. A resource of 2.74 Moz is from an inferred resource at depth at Nyankanga where the viability of an underground operation is being studied. Proven and probable reserves are 49.77 Mt @ 3.46 g/t (5.54 Moz) based on a $325/oz gold price providing a mine life of ten years at an average production rate of 500 000 oz per year. Reserve estimation was carried out using mineable polygons to select resource blocks based on a series of mining and costs parameters. In addition key cost parameters were tested to provide sensitivities for pit optimisations and pathfinders for negotiations with suppliers and contractors. Construction began in March 1999 and first gold is expected to be poured in the second-quarter 2000.
