The discovery of chemosynthetic-based ecosystems at hydrothermal vents in the deep ocean was arguably one of the most important findings in biological science in the latter half of the 20th century. More than 100 vent fields have been documented along the 60,000 km global mid-ocean ridge system. Over 500 new animal species, over 80% of which are endemic to the vents, have been described from this environment. Unusual, highly evolved symbioses between invertebrates and chemolithautotrophic bacteria are common at vents, producing concentrations of biomass that rival the most productive ecosystems on Earth. Hydrothermal vents ecosystems, because of their very limited area and the presence of endemic species, are highly vulnerable to human disturbance. Mining for polymetallic sulphide deposits poses the greatest future physical threat to hydrothermal vents and their biological communities. However, there is more immediate concern about the impact of concentrated scientific research activities. Some sites have been revisited by several research expeditions per year for more than a decade. As vent sites become the focus of intensive, long-term research, oversight organizations are discussing mitigative measures to avoid significant loss of habitat or oversampling of populations. Canada recently became the first national jurisdiction to set aside a hydrothermal vent site as a Marine Protected Area.

The New York talc deposits of commercial importance are in St. Lawrence and Lewis counties, in the northwest Adirondack Mountains (Fig 1). All of the deposits are of pre-Cambrian age and occur within highly deformed and recrystallized marble of the Grenville series. The deposits in St. Lawrence County, near Gouverneur, are the largest and most productive of their type known in the Western Hemisphere. In 1948 the seven mines which are in operation will produce about 130,000 tons of ground talc. All talc production in Lewis County is from one mine. There the annual production ranges from 15,000 to 30,000 tons. These so called talcs of New York State include earth materials of differ- ent chemical and mineral compositions. In general the mineral talc is sub- ordinate in amount to other minerals in both the Gouverneur and Natural Bridge deposits.

N OW THAT the war is over it is possible to release data and correct some erroneous statements and impressions relative to the use of manganese-steel armor and helmets, which heretofore have been carefully guarded. The material of the helmets furnished to the English, American, and Belgian armies was invented by Sir Robert Hadfield, Bart., F.R.S., and was described in a paper read by him at the International Engineering Congress in August, 1893. The French helmet was 2 oz. lighter than the English but had a greatly inferior resistance. Tests showed that it was perforable at as low a velocity as 350 ft.- sec. impact of the standard shrapnel bullets. Helmets made of the Hadfield "Era" manganese steel kept out standard shrapnel bullets of the same quality at no less than from 750 to 950 ft.-sec. impact velocity. The respective energies were, in the case of the French helmet, only 0.021 ft.-tons, 46 ft.-lb., and in the British 0.095 ft.-tons, 213 ft.-lb. The German helmet was made of nickel-chromium steel and, although 12 oz. heavier and 12 per cent. thicker than the Hadfield, was not only perforate

With the societal desire and drive towards low carbon energy sources, there is a growing awareness of the important role that minerals and metals will play with renewable energy technologies. Copper is an essential metal for technologies that generate energy from renewable sources, in particular for wind and solar photovoltaic energy systems. A recent report (Arrobas et al., 2017) estimated that the median increase in copper demand through to 2050 for wind technologies and for solar photovoltaics would need to be 250% and 300% respectively to meet the goal of a 2°C global temperature increase scenario compared with a 6°C global increase, which is largely an extension of current trends (IEA, 2018). The aim of this extended abstract is to demonstrate with the necessary increase in copper production for renewable energy technologies that sound sustainability performance across the global copper value chain is to the benefit of government, society and industry.CITATION:Corder, G D and Bangerter, P J, 2018. Cassiar Mine in northern British Columbia began development in 1952. The deposir is found on rhe west limb of rhe McDame Synclinorium in a Mississippian serpentinite body. The serpenltntte, one of the McDame l ntrusives, imrudes Sylvester Group . rocks, which comprise a Lare Devonian to Early M1ss1ss1pptan eugeosync/inal sequence of argillites, quarrzires and volcanics. The foorwall conracr berween Sylvester Group rocks and rhe serpenrinire is a marked zone of broken and incomperent argillite and graphitic schist. The less marked hang- 111gwall contacr 1s a band of indurated argillite. The JurassicCretaceous emplacemenr of the Cassiar Graniric Barholilh is responsible for mosr of the numerous )aims, faulrs and shear zones found in the serpentinite body. Faulting occurred borh before and after asbestos formation. Asbestos is mined from an open pit ar rhe rate of 4,535 ronnes daily. It passes from the pir along a rramline to the mill, where it is concen/rared into nine direcr milling grades. Packaged fibres travel ro over 40 counrries around rhe world for use in the texrile, cemenr and other industries.

THE AUTHORS welcome this timely opportunity to comment o n a paper by MacLean and Merner (" Room-and- Pillar Mining at the Prince Mine of the Cape Breton Development Corporation " , ClM Bulletin , June 1978, pp. 59-62) concerning the rock falls and their relation to "a change in the strata". First, however, it is proper to express our gratitude to the Cape Breton Development Corporation, and in particular to A. R. MacLean, for making it possible for us at the College of Cape Breton to start two new collections. The first of these is a fossil plant reference collection from the Sydney Coalfield, Cape Breton (Upper Carboniferous period) , and the second is a documentation of the role o f pyrite in the formation of hydrated sulphates (samples from No. 26 Colliery, 1-B Mine, and the Prince Mine at Point Aconi). Conditions of sedimentation in the deltaic-type basin of the Upper Carboniferous time in the Point Aconi area were such that on the (coal) swamp, now represented by the Stubbart (or Hub) seam , (a) clays of varying thickness and extent were deposited , (b) biogenetic sulphur was introduced and (c) flora were buried. These are essentially the culprit s that make rock falls possible and at the same time predictable over large areas (in the present mine). The clays lithified to become shale, and biogenetic sulphur combined with iron to become pyrite (marcasite?), which exists as nodules and in fine-grained layers.

A new mining law for the Recublic of Polend was promulgated by presiden- tial decree dated November 29, 1930, published in the Journal of Lews (Dzienni stex) No. E, text 654, December E, 1530, and wes to become effective January 1, 1932, in all Polend except Silesie. Its adoption in Silesia wes dependent pon the action of the Silesian Diet. As the new law is considered an im- provement over the old Austrian Mining Lew, which is operative in the Silesian districts of Bielsk and Cieszyn, and the Prussian Kining Law, which is opera- tive in Upper Silesia, no delay in its adoption for Silesin was looked for. This new law codifies the various juridical regulations pertaining to ines existing in different parts of the Polish Republic but does not include legislation with respect to the extraction of minerel oil, especially crude oil. Petroleum legislation was postponed to a later date in order to facili- tate codification in other fields. Koreover, as the oil industry exists in Galicia elone, deley will not be detrimental.

Australia contains some of the most productive mining areas and is characterised by ancient landscapes and highly variable hydrology. Historical mining of iron ore, coal and other minerals has targeted ore deposits located above water tables, and elevated above creek lines where possible to reduce cost. The downturn in mining caused by falling ore prices over recent years has triggered a drive to reduce cost, maximise yield and delay capital expenditure associated with opening new mines. So as the ore deposits with more favorable mining conditions become depleted there is an increased focus on mining ore associated with valley floors and creek lines. This is demonstrated by a regional assessment of the extent of Channel Iron Deposits (CID) and Iron Ore (Fe) Mines and Deposits in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia (Figure 1). A large proportion of these mines are, or plan to, target high grade CID ore associated with existing creek systems. Figure 2 shows outcropping and inferred sub-cropping CID extents, which suggests there are vast quantities of CID ore deposits throughout the Pilbara Region, intersected by major creeks which could be mined at some point in the future using creek diversions (Atkinson et al., 2017). A similar picture could also be produced for coal mining in Queensland, particularly in areas such as the Bowen Basin.While creek diversions provide an opportunity to maximise the utilisation of these orebodies and extend the life of mine, creek diversions can involve substantial financial, social, environmental and regulatory risks that need to be carefully managed (Markham et al., 2017, Atkinson et al., 2017). This paper discusses the key issues and opportunities associated with diversion decision making. It highlights the importance of using a well-structured assessment methodology that allows key stakeholders to be part of the assessment process and is complementary to material presented in Atkinson et al., (2017). Design considerations for operational and closure designs are presented, as well as mine planning considerations, risks, cost saving opportunities and the benefits of an integrated approach to design. "Duplex converter process, in which the first converter is used for removing phosphorus from hot metal (De-P), is an important way to produce low P-content and ultra-low P-content steels. In order to improve phosphorization removal and formation of slag with high basicity at relatively low temperature during dephosphorization converter process, effects of temperature, silicon content in hot metal and varied compositions of the De-P converter slag on phosphorus distribution between the slag and hot metal were investigated with thermodynamic calculations and by laboratory scale experiments in present work. Results showed that phosphorus distribution ratio between slag and metal was varied in 10.6~26.6 when basicity of the slag was in the range of 1.5~2.1 at 1370, and the distribution ratio was increased with increasing basicity and Fe10 content in the slag.IntroductionIt is known that phosphorus exists in steel in the form of solid solution, which can significantly improve strength and hardness of steel at room temperature. However, the plasticity and toughness of steel, especially the low temperature plasticity is sharply reduced and leads to high ductile-brittle transition temperature. This phenomenon is commonly known as cold brittleness of steel [1~3]. Hence, phosphorus should be removed as much as possible in the steelmaking process, because it is generally harmful to the iron and steel products."

In 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a portion of the 110,000 acre Massacre Rim Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-1013). The area studied, containing 23,260 acres, is located in northwest Washoe County, Nevada, about 25 miles west of Vya adjoining the Charles Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. Basalt caps older tuffaceous sedimentary rocks in an area that contains no claims or prospects. No mineral resources were identified during this investigation.

The first two segments will discuss briefly the historical development of the Utah Copper Division and describe the ore body. The third segment will review the facilities and operating procedures for the Utah Copper Division's newest plant, the Bonneville Concentrator. The fourth segment describes flotation process circuitry, including molybdenite recovery procedures, at the Arthur and Magna concentrators. (The Bonneville concentrator is a crushing and grinding unit and does not have its own flotation plant). 1. Historical Development Progress through change has been the key to the successful operation of the Utah Copper Division for more than 70 years. As the original low-grade copper operation, the pressures to remain competitive and profitable have dictated the timing and extent of each change. Much of the change has occurred through technological and economic advancements in the area of ore concentration. The Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation had its origin June 4, 1903, when the Utah Copper Company was organized. The initial mill of 300 tpd (tons per day) capacity was built at Copperton a few miles below the present Bingham Canyon mine site. From 1904 to 1910, the Copperton mill was expanded to a capacity of 1,000 tpd, and all of the known apparatus for gravity concentration were evaluated.

"The laser characteristic is strongry dependent upon the stoichometry of forsterite (Mg2Si04) and YSO (Y2Si05) single crystals, because of change in the valency and occupied sites of doped Cr in the lattice so that mole ratios of Mg0/Si02 and Y203/Si02 in the above single crystals must be precisely analyzed. In this study ICP-AES was applied for analyzing the mole ratios. Emission intensities corresponding to Si and Mg or Si and Y were measured at the same time with internal standard method. Preparation of sample solutions, measurement conditions of ICP-AES and interferences by coexisting components were discussed, resulting in excellently precise detennination of stoichometry of the above single crystals.IntroductionIn conventional stoichiometric analysis of single crystals, the stoichiometry is detennined by analyzing each component separately with titrimetry and gravimetry techniques. On the other hand, by stoichiometric analyses using ICP-AES, emission intensities corresponding to components are measured at the same time with internal standard method. Consequently erros caused by variation of analytical condition are canceled out.Cr-doped Mg2Si04 and Y2Si05 syngle crystals are known as laser materials. The change of valency and occupied sites of doped Cr affect the characteristic of single crystal as aleser materials. The change of state of doped Cr.Stoichometric composition of Mg2Si04 is constructed by 2mole of MgO and 1mole of Si02, and Y2Si05 is constructed by 1mole of Y203 and 1mole of Si02. In this study, required analytical precision in component mole ratio is within an error of 0.0010 for Mg2Si04 (CV=0.05wt%), and within an error of 0.0030 for Y2Si05 (CV=0.05wt%) (Table I )."

In China, Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag is traditionally used as an aggregate for civil engineering, for road engineering and fertilizer. In order to make full use of BOF slag, the experiments of BOF slag with high temperature roasting has been carried out and the phase transformation is studied. The BOF slag from Chongqing Iron & Steel is roasted in the electric muffle furnace at three different temperature. The influences of the high temperature roasting on change the phase composition of BOF slag was characterized by XRD. The results revealed that SFCA was produced at the high temperature in air atmosphere and melting temperature of slag was lowered. Therefore, if the BOF slag which treated by roasting was utilized in the sintering process, it is advantageous to improve the sintering strength and the formation of the liquid phase and reduce fuel consumption in the sintering production process.

Coal and rock pillar design is critical not only for mineral extraction but also for the safety of the mine operators. Pillar strength can be estimated through numerous empirical formulas that are available in the literature, which are typically based on a statistical analysis of case study data. The limitation of most of these equations is that they only considered the width to height ratio and in situ rock or coal strength for pillars in horizontal seams. The adoption of such equations to estimate pillar strength in inclined seams may overestimate the pillar strength and ultimately lead to a poor pillar design. This paper will discuss different techniques that can be used to estimate pillar strength in inclined seams as well as present preliminary modeling results for stress redistribution around inclined pillars. Factors in the parametric analysis include pillar shapes, geometry, and seam inclination.

A portable radon monitoring instrument capable of making on-the-spot measurements of the radon gas content of uranium mine atmospheres was designed and constructed. The monitor was tested in the laboratory and in operating uranium mines. Good correlation was obtained between the monitor readings and radon measurements made on mine atmosphere samples taken in radon bottles.

THE year 1929 has shown a surprising growth in the attention given by mining men to the subject of ground movement and subsidence from mining, as evidenced by the large number of articles that have appeared in technical journals, also papers and discussions in mining societies in the leading mining countries of the world. These have not been confined to consideration of the narrower limits of the subject but in application have extended to many of the fundamental questions involved in mining. The papers and discussions have been concerned with .ground movements resulting from mining of a great variety of minerals, metallic and lion-metallic. Examples of the former are: the mining of gold ore at Johannesburg, South Africa, and in the Kolar field, India; mining copper ores in Arizona and Utah; and lead and zinc in the Joplin region. Examples of ground movement resulting from mining non-metallic minerals are found in: the mining of. coal in many countries; potash mining in Germany; the mining of- common salt in several parts of the' United States; and the mining of sulfur in Texas and Louisiana; and examples of subsidence in the non-metallics are found exceptionally in the extraction of petroleum by wells, as in the Goose Creek field, on the Gulf Coast,' and recently in the Sour Lake field' of Texas

In this paper, the development of research and practice on the separation process of fine complex Cu-S ore at a Copper Mine in south of China, was discussed. Since early 1980s, various processes were used, such as the process of bulk flotation-separation, the process of selection flotation and the process of iso-flotation. Especially when the process of selective flotation was put into operation, further development was achieved in beneficiation results, but the difficulty in separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite has not been solved yet, so causing a poor quality of Cu concentrate. The author has successfully developed a new separation process characterized by the use of collector thionocarbamate and fast flotation. The selectivity of fine chalcopyrite and pyrite was greatly improved. This process supplied a new route for the treatment of fine complex Copper sulphide ores.

ZINC metallurgists continue to follow with keen interest reports of successful results from the continuous retort plants at Palmerton, Pa., and Meadowbrook. W. Va. The new process had already demonstrated its ability to reduce the lead content of the metal and to effect savings in labor and fuel. The past year has shown that the retorts themselves can he built to last long enough so that the retort cost per ton of metal is lower than in past practice with small horizontal re- torts. A number of the latest type of retorts are reported to have been in continuous operation for over 18 months without a failure and are said to be still in good condition. This seems a complete answer to the last question which remained before continuous zinc smelting could he pronounced commercially practicable.

The Bulletin. As already announced in the January Bulletin, this publication will be issued during the coming year monthly instead of bi-monthly as heretofore. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates for membership, and other items of timely information. The New Haven Meeting. As already announced in special circular, the XCVIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at New Haven, Conn., beginning Feb. 23, 1909. The Secretary of the Local Committee is Prof. J. D. Irving, Box D, Yale Station, New Haven. The program embraces visits to many interesting works in New Haven, Ansonia, Bridgeport, etc. The leading topics for discussion at the sessions will be: The Conservation of Natural Resources; A Sea-Level Canal at Panama; and The Technical Education of Mining Engineers. But papers on other subjects also are announced. A supplementary session of this meeting will be held in New York City, at some time during March, 1909, as a joint session with other national engineering societies, for the further discussion of the subject of The Conservation of Natural Resources. A Pacific Coast Meeting. The XCVIIth meeting will be held on the Pacific Coast, including a visit to the Exposition at Seattle, and various other points en route going or coming, depending upon the route and program finally adopted. More definite information will be announced at the New Haven Meeting, or at the earliest possible date thereafter.
