Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970's, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the O.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6,560 Mm Id (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2,832 m Id (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm Id (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.

Due to its versatility and low cost, polypropylene (PP) is one of the most widely used polymers in the world, consequently in research and development of new products. The polypropylene modified was prepared by gamma irradiation in acetylene at 12.5 kGy dose, technical polymer also known as high-melt-strength-polypropylene (HMSPP). It was mixed with montmorillonite (MMT) clay and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for bactericide activity. HMS-Polypropylene-clay-silver nanocomposites were manufactured using twin-screw extruders. Those materials were prepared by a melt mixing process via twin screw extrusion with a wide range of processing conditions. The polypropylene nanocomposites (PPNC) surfaces were exposed to gamma-radiation (60Co) source in presence of nitrogen as inert atmosphere at 1; 3; 5; 10; 20 and 50 kGy doses for modified the surfaces in order to enhance biocide activity. The samples surfaces were characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDX) and evaluated by determination of bactericide effects. The results indicate the formation of structures predominantly intercalated of HMSPP nanocomposite. Contact tests for antibacterial activity of the hybrid polymer were applied against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) bacteria. The irradiations on the samples surfaces were insufficient to promote activity on contact biocide tests.

The use of aggregate pier foundation systems has become widespread as the engineering practice moves towards cost-effective ground improvement solutions that provide accelerated construction schedules. Increased bearing capacity, effective settlement control and potential for liquefaction mitigation are commonly acknowledged benefits of aggregate piers. This paper studies the mechanisms by which aggregate piers interact with each other and with the surrounding ground when excited by seismic loads. A particular emphasis was placed on the response of a raft foundation supported on a site improved using aggregate piers. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analyses were conducted using commercial software package, ABAQUS. Non-linear soil behaviour is modelled using a three-dimensional total stress-based bounding surface plasticity model, which is able to simulate stiffness degradation and damping increase in the soil. The soil stratigraphy considered in this study was a 30 m deep soil deposit that comprised a very stiff base layer and a shallow soft surficial clay layer. Ricker Wavelet time histories with different frequency contents are used as the excitation force in the analyses. Various area replacement ratios (ARR) for aggregate piers are studied for a square plan layout. The results presented in this study are considered to be of interest to researchers and designers in evaluating the seismic ground response of the sites improved using aggregate piers.

In the nickel industry, molten slags produced from a Pierce-Smith converter contain significant amounts of valuable metals in the forms of oxides and physically entrained matte droplets. A slag cleaning step, which takes places in an electrical slag-cleaning furnace, is therefore required to recover the valuable metals as a common practice. Utilization of a waste material from aluminum industry (i.e. spent potlining) as a flux to improve the slag cleaning in terms of both the metal recovery and the operation efficiency was studied by simulation with FactSage program. Results show that the addition of SPL could substantially reduce the slag viscosity due to its fluoride values, thus accelerating the settling of matte droplets. The carbon value in the SPL could also help increase the metal recovery by reducing the valuable metal oxides followed by settling.

The growing production of fly ash with the many attendant problems of economics, disposal and potential uses suggests an urgent need to consider those properties which are basic in its beneficiation. Fly ash is extremely variable and heterogeneous in all respects except its fine size. Because of its production in huge quantities, it becomes significant as a potential raw material. Detailed data are presented describing particle size and shape, density distribution and magnetic characteristics. The major components include combustible residuals, magnetite and silicates. These data are discussed in terms of beneficiation processes and uses, The results of air classification to produce a uniformly fine-sized low combustible product are encouraging. It is proposed that major increases in the future use of fly ash, must involve some form of beneficiation. Both the coal producing industries and the consuming utilities would benefit from increased utilization.

"All mine shaft conveyances in Canada and most of the United States that are supported by a single hoist rope or attachment point and used for transporting persons are required by regulation to be equipped with safety catches and mechanisms. These safety mechanisms, commonly called safety dogs, are designed to stop and hold a free falling conveyance, with a full personnel load, in the event of a hoist rope or attachment component failure. The conveyance’s safety mechanism must be tested under dynamic conditions before it is used to transport personnel. This paper will discuss free-fall testing and it’s results on conveyance free-fall tests performed in the test tower at INCO Limited, Sudbury, Ontario.Topics covered will be free-fall tests on various wood types such as B.C. fir, Karri wood and Trusjoist MacMillan Limited Parallamwood (PSL), comparison of deceleration rates versus free-fall velocity and the influence of safety dog tooth design on deceleration rates."

Every second can count when trying to board a departing flight or catch a ride-share to your final destination. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is in the midst of a project that aims to cut about 13 seconds between automated people mover trains (Plane Train) that move passengers between the terminals and concourses. The project involves extending the Plane Train tunnel west from its existing terminus under the domestic terminal. Working from inside non-public areas of the terminal, Keller North America, Inc. (Keller) incorporated systems of micropile-supported steel beams and grillage to both underpin existing columns prior to tunneling and support open-cut excavation at the tie-in of the new to the existing tunnel. Dewatering aided in mining a challenging section at the start of the drive of the mixedface, sequentially excavated tunnel and an automated instrumentation system monitored the performance of the construction and its impact to the terminal. Cut and cover egress and ventilation tunnels required braced support of excavation.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has previously established pillar design guidelines for the underground stone mining industry. These guidelines were created from an empirical database of pillar observations and were largely drawn from shallow, flat-lying mining operations. Current trends forecast a great amount of underground stone mines developing under deeper cover, higher seam dips, and more frequent multiple-seam mining configurations than in the past. The complex loading conditions and limited experience in these environments presents a substantial increased risk of ground failure. To investigate these loading conditions, NIOSH has installed a pillar and roof monitoring system at an underground limestone mine in central Pennsylvania. The mine is operating in a seam with dips ranging from 13 to 18 degrees and overburdens ranging from 275 m (900 ft) to 425 m (1,400 ft). Instrumentation installed in an undeveloped pillar and in surrounding strata is currently measuring pillar and roof behavior in response to stress redistribution during excavation. Laser scans are being used to measure ground displacement and changes in conditions associated with local mining conditions and significant geological features. Initial stress measurements show a gradual increase in stress in response to mining, and stress changes that correspond with blasts. The seismic system is operational, with calibration events signaling on each of the 18 sensors. INTRODUCTION Improving mine-wide ground control stability can help reduce the potential for catastrophic failure of underground structures. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted prior research in stone pillar design and has established fundamental pillar design guidelines for the underground stone mining industry, which resulted in the development of the S-Pillar program (Esterhuizen et al., 2011; Esterhuizen and Murphy, 2015). The data that constitute the S-Pillar program were derived from past mining experience that was almost exclusively drawn from shallow, flat-lying, single-level mining operations1. Stakeholder interactions with NIOSH researchers have indicated that increased numbers of underground stone operations are expected to mine under significantly deeper cover, with greater seam dips, and under multi-level operating conditions (Slaker and Murphy, 2016). The complex loading conditions and limited experience in these challenging environments present a substantial increased risk of ground failure. Inadequate pillar design in these new and challenging environments could result in catastrophic wide-area pillar collapses and an increased safety burden to miners working in the U.S. limestone mining industry. To develop design guidelines and prevent inadequate pillar designs for these challenging environments, NIOSH is currently conducting detailed pillar response investigations at case-study mine sites operating in challenging environments."

Analysis of the helium content of a natural gas presents more than the usual difficulties encountered in applying the thermal--conductivity method because of the relatively small amounts of this inert gas present and the wide variation in the other constituents. However, the numerous advantages of this method and its adaptability to continuously recording and control instruments make it worthy of consideration. A specific application of the method described yields quantitative results only when used with gas mixtures of known qualitative compositions which vary within predetermined limits. Periodic analyses for the helium content of a producing gas well may be conveniently made by an absorption method3/ and a continuous analytical method is not necessary for this purpose. Natural gas containing 1.75 to 1.90 percent of helium produced from Government-owned wells is processed in the Amarillo (Texas) Helium Plant of the Bureau of Mines. The helium extracted in the plant is supplied to the Army and Navy, and the processed natural gas is sold to a commercial gas company4/. As complete recovery of the helium in the raw material is not economically practicable, the processed gas contains 0.1 to 0.3 percent of helium, depending upon conditions of operation;- Production is checked against the helium removed from the gas, which before the installation of the thermal--conductivity apparatus was calculated from the analysis of a cumulative sample of the processed gas. As conditions of operation affect the residual helium content to a large extent, a composite sample was an uncertain index of the efficiency of the process.

"The empirical approach for pillar design assumes that geological conditions should be perfect, such as horizontal seams, and that pillar strength and behavior will only depend on the coal seam strength and the vertical pressure caused by the overburden thickness on the coal seam; this vertical pressure is based on the tributary area. Empirical methods do not consider the effect of the interface between the roof and pillar or the floor and pillar.The effect of the interface shear strength on final coal pillar strength has been studied since the 1960s. However, few case studies have been generated from that, especially in shallow underground coal mining (less than 100 meters). This case study involves a mining section at the 101 coal mine in the Santa Catarina state of Brazil, which is experiencing pillar rib spalling and yielding because of a 1-to 2-cm-thick clay layer at the area of contact between the coal seam and immediate roof. The depth of the coal seam is 60 m on average and 2.3 m in height. This particular section also has 12-14% (7-8°) of seam inclination. The pillar size varies from l lxll to 13xl2m; thus, the safety factor (SF) based on the ARMPS approach is more than 1.5. The objective of this paper is to determine the cause of the pillar yielding and study the effect of the clay layer at the interface between the roof and pillar, including the inclination of the coal seam. This study conducted empirical and numerical models (2D and 3D) to understand the effect of the thin clay layer. The conclusion is that the clay layer affected the strength of the interface between roof and pillar, causing rib spalling and reducing the pillar strength.INTRODUCTIONPillar stability and deformation depends on the coal seam strength and vertical pressure caused by the overburden thickness on the coal seam, and this vertical pressure is based on the tributary area. Expanded markets for copper in the past few years and a consequent search for new ore bodies have revitalized the widely known but seldom applied method of producing copper called heap leaching. This term should be differentiated from dump leaching in that the latter is applied to dumps of mixed oxide and sulfide ores (although either may predominate) that have been too low grade to beneficiate and have, therefore, been stripped off the higher grade underlying sulfide ores. Heap leaching is defined here as the process applied to oxide ores which have been mined solely for the purpose of leaching. In this case, all costs of mining the ore become a part (and a substantial one, as will be shown) of the cost of the copper produced, whereas in dump leaching the mining cost has already been accounted for as a stripping cost for the sulfide ore. Of course, with newly opened ore bodies, stripping costs may be divided through accounting procedures, between the copper produced by the mill and that obtained by leaching, but in general this type of operation must be economic on the basis of the sulfide ore alone. Heap leaching, as a beneficiation method, is unique in that it is the only process used for the recovery of a metal in which the time involved from mining the ore to metal production is measured in months instead of hours or at the most, days, Then too, after the ore body has been depleted and mining has ceased, metal production will continue for some substantial period of time. Heap leaching is also unique because unlike any other method of beneficiation, metal recovery cannot be accurately forecast ahead of time and recovery will never approach that of a conventionally milled sulfide ore or even that of a vat leached oxide ore. Counter-balancing this drawback, however, is the relatively low capital expenditure necessary to put a heap leaching operation into production and the consequence that smaller ore bodies which would not support the higher capital cost involved in a vat leaching plant can be made into producers. Stated more simply, in heap leaching the operator accepts low recovery in exchange for low capital costs and the break even point, that is, where the operator should go to vat leaching with its higher recovery and higher capital costs, is a matter of economics and also, to a great extent, a matter for the nature of the ore to decide. For instance, an ore that will vat leach in 7 to 10 days using 7 pounds of sulfuric acid per pound of copper produced might use double or triple that amount of acid during the months that are required for heap leaching.

PRODUCING more steel without major capital investment in new plants is one of the most perplexing difficulties which confront the nation's postwar steel industry. The lack of scrap at a reasonable price results in an especially heavy pressure being brought to bear on the pig-iron production facilities which consist of 245 blast furnaces scattered throughout the country but concentrated most heavily in the Pittsburgh-Chicago area. Present demands exceed the total optimum output of these existing blast-furnace plants. Management hesitates to authorize erection of new plants on a scale sufficient to satisfy 'the demand for pig iron for two main reasons: first, extensive building under the present high costs of construction would greatly increase . the over-all capital investment per ton of iron capacity; and, second, the amount of steel necessary for a major construction program would upset the already tight supply-demand situation. The answer to the problem would then seem to be the development and application of a method which would increase the capacity of existing blast furnaces with a minimum of alterations and expense. Experiments consisting of operating a blast furnace at higher-than-normal top pressures, as proposed by Arthur D. Little, Inc., were carried out by the Republic Steel Corp. initially during World War II, and much more extensively during the past twenty months. The results of the Republics trials indicate that pressure blowing is a solution to the problem of increasing pig-iron capacity without necessitating major changes to existing equipment.

It has always been a challenge to accelerate the underground development progress by increasing the advance rate of each development round. Surveys have shown that most of the development rounds have only been pulled 84 per cent to 94 per cent of the drilled length. Where bare detonators have been used as primers, less advance rate is expected. In order to obtain a good understanding of the influence of priming upon the advance rate in underground development, a series of high energy primer trials has been conducted by Orica Explosives in the goldfields using various types of Orica high energy Anzomex « primers. It has been shown that development face has been pulled an extra 140 mm to 420 mm by priming with Anzomex « K primers compared with conventional primers. From all the trials at different sites, we have seen that the face pulled using K primers was more square than that pulled using conventional primers. Virtually, no butts and toe were left on the face developed using K primers. Computer simulation has been conducted using either a conventional primer, a bare detonator or a K primer as initiator. The study compared the predicted crack patterns developed around the toe of the hole and it was deducted that a detonator-initiated hole would leave a butt some 200 mm longer than that from a conventional primer-initiated hole, and a K primer-initiated blasthole would give rise to stronger initial p-wave, promoting crack development around the toe and increasing the ability to pull close to the full depth.

Tailings dam failures continue to occur worldwide at an unacceptable rate, averaging two events annually over the last 100 years. Furthermore, tailings dams continue to grow in size, increasing the potential release of tailings and water should they fail. Tailings are generally deposited in a slurry state, with the potential to flow if containment is lost. Understanding the generation and propagation of excess pore water pressure on failure is critical to predicting the flow and run-out of tailings. This paper presents numerical modelling using the material point method indicating that tailings run-out processes may be self-enhanced by the excess pore water pressure induced during the collapse of the containment. Moreover, it is shown that geomorphological features, such as the slope and its surface roughness downstream of the tailings dam, influence the pore water pressure dynamics upstream of the advancing toe.CITATION:Llano-Serna, M A, Bu, L and Williams, D J, 2018. Recent times have witnessed a notable momentum in the interest surrounding technology dedicated to harnessing waste as valuable resources, prompted by the mounting challenges posed by waste accumulation and the swift depletion of natural resources. The carbon dissolution process within a molten iron bath stands as a pivotal reaction within the metal processing sector. The current study explores the utilisation of waste graphite electrodes (WGE) (obtained after being utilised in an electric arc furnace) as a secondary resource of carbon for dissolution into liquid iron. Experimental investigations were carried out at 1550°C using the sessile drop approach. High purity iron powder was used and the carbonaceous substrates were prepared from the ground WGE. The carbon pickup was determined using a suitable carbon analyser. Furthermore, an examination of the interfacial area between the molten iron and the WGE substrate was conducted beneath the metallic droplet, which effectively represents the iron/carbon interface. This interfacial analysis was carried out on two different samples obtained after a varying period of heat treatments at 1550°C. The interface layer was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in conjunction with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).

A complex polymetallic sulfide ore in Yunnan, China, has various valuable minerals, which are Chalcopyrite, Galena, Pyrite, Gold, Silver, and Magnetite. A reasonable new flowsheet with a bulk flotation and a flotation separation of sulfide minerals that are Chalcopyrite, Galena, and Pyrite was carried out at first stage. After that tailings were treated by low intensity magnetic separation to achieve magnetite concentrate. A high Pb concentrate assaying 60.00 percent Pb at total recovery of 75.71 percent with 40.50 g/t Au and 1390.00 g/t Ag, a final high Cu concentrate assaying 24.45 percent Cu at high recovery of 92.03 percent and a magnetite concentrate assaying 60.78 percent Fe at recovery of 33.61 percent with 18.45g/t Au and 234.99 g/t Ag, are obtained. The total recovery of Gold and Silver in Pb concentrate and Cu concentrate reached 71.63 percent and 67.32 percent, respectively. It is shown, that this new flowsheet could realize efficient recovery for all of the valuable minerals in the ore and is easy to be industrialized. Isotope analyses distinguish biogenic sulfur ores from non-biogenic ores, but do not distinguish bioepigenetic from biosyngenetic ores. Sulfur deposits of salt dome caprocks and of bedded Permian evaporites of west Texas, however, are clearly bioepigenetic. Anhydrite, introduced by salt diapirs into geologically younger sediments, is converted biogenically to sulfur and calcite in the presence of petroleum; for example, in Challenger Knoll, a salt dome at a water depth of 3600 m in the Gulf of Mexico. Bedded evaporites of west Texas in association with petroleum show an obvious epigenetic replacement of the anhydrite layers by biogenic sulfur and calcite

This paper describes the sinking and lining of a 14 foot 6 inch finished diameter shaft down to and into the salt of a typical dome of the Gulf States region. The conditions and nature of the strata encountered divide the work into three distinct sections - that in (1) alluvial surface deposits, sunk through by open caisson methods, (2) water bearing rock, directly above the salt, and in (3) salt.
