Nas últimas décadas, as fibras naturais têm sido investigadas como uma alternativa para a utilização de fibras sintéticas, como material de reforço, tais como fibras de vidro. Algumas vantagens das fibras naturais são a menor densidade, biodegradabilidade e o fato de virem de fontes renováveis. Com o intuito de melhorar ainda mais as propriedades de compósitos de fibras naturais, investiga-se o desempenho de compósitos reforçados com tecidos de fibras naturais, uma vez que estes proporcionam um reforço multidirecional e permite a introdução de uma maior fração de volume de tecido. Neste trabalho, investigou-se a resistência à tração dos compósitos com matriz de poliéster reforçados com diferentes frações de volume de tecido de rami, que é uma das mais lignocelulósicas mais resistentes. Os espécimes foram testados em uma máquina universal de ensaios Instron. Os resultados mostraram um aumento na resistência à tração com o aumento da fração de volume de tecido.

Several improvements were made to the single strand rod mill at Laverton to increase production, reduce maintenance and improve several aspects of product quality. With changes to the water cooling line and control system, cobbles could be significantly reduced, more consistent properties obtained and yield improved. An upgrade of the laying head enabled vibrations to be reduced and thus allowed for higher speeds on small sizes. With potential for dramatically increased pipe life, a new pipe support and laying pipe system provided for improved laying pattern on small sizes and thus more uniform cooling on the conveyor and better coil package. This paper discusses details of these equipment and control system upgrades and the resulting benefits that have been realized from the project.

Los trabajos de perforación 2016, nos han permitido reconocer nuevos cuerpos mineralizados asociados a zonas de Skarn, con leyes de (0.30 g/t Au y 0.4% Cu), emplazados en las formaciones Chulec (calizas), Inca (sedimentos), Farrat (cuarcitas). Los ensamble de alteración analizados son Yeso, Clorita, Epidota, Paragonita, algunos de estos minerales poseen una concentración anómala de REE. Indicativos de una gradación sistema alta sulfuración a Skarn."

A new style of tectonic map based on age of folding has been prepared for the Canadian Appalachian region as part of the Tectonic Map of Canada Project. This style of map pro-vides a clearer picture of the tectonic history of the region than any meth-od hitherto attempted. Precambrian blocks that were relatively unaffected by Palaeozoic de-formation are distinguished on the Great Northern Peninsula and in the Conception Bay region of Newfound-land. K/ A age determinations suggest that these blocks were intruded and metamorphosed during Grenville orogeny. Other Grenville-like rocks, on Cape Breton Island and in New Brunswick, were more actively involved in subsequent Palaeozoic orogeny. Consolidation Coal Co. tested the agglomeration of fine coal using a laboratory pellet mill. The principal operating variables examined were feed coal moisture, coal size distribution, and additives to the feed coal. The moisture of the feed coal was found to be critical to both the pellet mill operability and the product strength. Coals, with feed moistures too high to pelletize, could be pelletized if mixed with lime or a water absorbent material. The addition of dry starch binder improved the product strength.

"Considerations are presented for developing and implementing self-hardening slurry mix designs to be utilized in barrier seepage walls. Slag-cement-cement-bentonite (SCCB) slurries are the primary focus, with some comparisons referenced to the more traditional Portland-based cement-bentonite (CB) slurries. Field and laboratory mixing methods are reviewed, including 1) single sack – single mixer method; 2) bentonite slurry mixer – cementitious addition mixer method; 3) bentonite mixer – grout mixer – CB blending mixer method. Major phenomena associated with the dynamics of barrier wall excavation, such as loss of water from the in-trench slurry and consolidation of in-trench slurry are discussed. Other topics touched upon include sand content effects, fluidizers utilized, and chemical contaminants. The role of higher bentonite to water ratio is reviewed, with demonstration of improvement of filtration properties, and an increase of water retention of the final consolidated product.IntroductionSelf-hardening slurry has been utilized to construct barrier seepage walls for many decades. This is essentially a single-step slurry excavation and backfill process whereby the trench-supporting fluid gains strength over a short period during installation and maintains or develops low hydraulic conductivity. The resulting curing slurry becomes the actual barrier wall as the resultant cement-augmented clay slurry now fulfills the dual purpose of both temporary trench stabilization and final cured-in-place product. This eliminates the requirement and expense of subsequent backfill/slurry displacement operations required in traditional barrier wall installations.Self-hardening slurries have been fabricated using a number of various clays, most commonly sodium bentonite, calcium bentonite, attapulgite, and sepiolite. Perhaps due to plentiful high quality sodium bentonite deposits found domestically, the proven excavation stabilization properties imparted from sodium bentonite slurries, sodium bentonites are typically specified for formulating self-hardening slurries in the US. Cementitious materials utilized most commonly are Portland cement and slag (ground blast furnace slag or GBFS). For the purposes of this discussion, self-hardening slurry having a cementitious of Portland will be referred to as CB. Those having cementitious material of GBFS replacing Portland (partially or wholly) will be referred to as SCCB."

During the solidification process of peritectic steel (PS), the peritectic reaction often causes volume contraction which associated with surface longitudinal cracks, and using mould flux with low heat flux density help for alleviating surface longitudinal cracks. New peritectic steel mold flux with Co2O3 doping reduced the heat flux density, and the optimal content was found to be 2.0 wt %. Furthermore, basicity and Na2O addition were designed, and the minimum heat flux density required basicity of 1.4 and 10.0 wt %. Na2O content. As a result, the optimal peritectic composition was CaO(35.67wt% ), SiO2(25.48 wt %)，Al2O3(3.7 wt %)， MgO(2.53 wt %)，Na2O(10 wt %)，CaF2(14 wt %)，Co2O3(2 wt %).

During dusk, nighttime and dawn operations, effective illumination is a crucial component of safety for getting on/off mobile surface mining equipment and for preshift inspections. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers examined whether illuminance levels could be improved for ingress/egress systems and preshift walkaround inspections of equipment using light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaires. Illumination and glare were key metrics evaluated. Although headlamps provided adequate illumination, LED area luminaires illuminated a much broader area compared to the narrow spot lighting of the headlamp. Hence, the use of additional area luminaires can increase slip-trip-fall (STF) hazard awareness and detection. Furthermore, a commercially available luminaire demonstrated better results than a custom LED luminaire relative to discomfort and disability glare.

Longwall mining is a commonly used method of coal extraction that involves the complete removal of large, rectangular panels of coal. Longwall mining causes the immediate seam roof to break and fall into the void created by mining. The convergence of the surrounding strata towards the mining void causes subsidence on the surface. The subsidence magnitude is related not only to the mining depth, the topography, the geological features and the overburden materials, but also to the sequence of the strata overlying a coal seam. In additional to the vertical subsidence which is evident at the surface, there are also horizontal movements inwards toward the centre of the void, which cause the surface to tilt, bend, stretch and com-press. This paper presents a parametric investigation of the influence of the overburden stratigraphy to surface deformations due to longwall mining using 2D finite element models. Models simulate rock movement by applying equivalent edge load to the open roof.

A study has been conducted to assess a new wet beneficiation treatment for the recovery of the sulphuric-acid-soluble titanium oxide contained in the waste from an Italian TiO2-pigment facility. The waste is produced during treatment of a Ti-enriched slag and contains as main components TiO2 (54%, of which 42% acid-soluble and 12% insoluble), SiO2 (27%) and A1203 (6%). Eighty percent of the material is finer than 50pm. The first step was to ascertain the possibilities offered by size classification, wet gravity separation, froth flotation and wet high-intensity magnetic separation to improve the grade and recovery of Ti02 and reduce the SiO2 content. The next step was to optimize the operating conditions of the various separations and assemble them into a complete flow- sheet. Beneficiation ensures potentially 70% recovery of the TiO2 with a concentrate grade of 80%.

"INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSAt the request of the lessees, the Pearl tract was examined in February 1946, by Otto Ruhl, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. From the evidence of old drill logs and from the few available records of mining operations on the Pearl and the adjoining Trussel (Big Tom) tract, it appeared that a relatively small churn-drilling program might develop enough lead-since ore to justify resumption of mining. In March 1946, funds were allotted for churn drilling, and the work was begun the following month. Ten holes totaling 1,933 feet were completed before the close of the project in August 1946. The work was under the general supervision of C. H. Johnson, chief, Rolla Division, Mining Branch, and under the direct supervision of the Bureau project engineers. 3/In its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to our national security and economy, It is the,of the Bureau to publish the facts development by each project as soon as possible after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, makes preliminary examinations and conducts investigation of mineral deposits. The Metallurgical Branch, O. C. Ralston, chief, participates in this program by making beneficiation tests and analyses. The definition and shortcomings of traditional cutoff grades are discussed. The concept of optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the Net Present Value (NPV) of annual cash flows coming from a mining project is introduced within the basic framework outlined by K. F. Lane. Several examples are used to demonstrate the shortfalls of cutoff grade policies obtained by various heuristic optimization techniques. An algorithm to obtain an optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the NPV of a project is given and described in detail.

During the past ten years a number of papers have appeared describing zeolite occurrences in the western United States in Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, altered bedded Tertiary pyroclastics, playa lakes, hot springs, and amygdaloidal basalts. With the emergence of natural zeolites as economic industrial minerals it appears, useful to develop a system of classification to delineate those zeolite deposits of economic interest which were not discovered until the middle 1950's. The first attempt at a classification of naturally occurring zeolites was made in 1914 by Lindgren l when he classified the zeolites into eleven groups based on their mode of occurrence. The zoned zeolites in the Mesozoic rocks of New Zealand and elsewhere were classified according to the mineral assemblages by Fyfe, et al.2 in 1958 as a zeolite facies corresponding to low grade regional metamorphism. In 1966, Hay suggested as an alternative to the preceding classification one which would "classify as diagenetic all mineral assemblages produced in sedimentary rocks under conditions in which zeolites are formed." In this paper a classification is proposed with the objective of providing an overall perspective of the zeolite occurrences in the western United States.

It is generally acknowledged that the head grade of the world’s copper resources is declining. Accordingly, there is an increase in the volume of resource material being mined and processed to maintain copper production. This has led to increases in cost base accompanied by reductions in Life of Mine (LOM) Net Present Value (NPV). The higher tonnages of material mined are driven by increased quantities of lower grade material required to satisfy the short term mine model. In turn, this has brought an increased focus on sampling and assay methods, since any error associated with estimating the grade of each block and determining its correct destination serves to magnify the losses that will occur. Presently most open-pit copper mining operations use blasthole sample assays to feed their shortterm model. The problematic nature of blasthole sampling is well documented (Engström, 2017), particularly the poor timeliness of the data and the significant errors that are inherent to the technique. Methods to improve grade control, such as drilling a separate grade control grid, have been proposed but come with their own cost, logistical, and accuracy shortcomings. A recent development in grade estimation is the Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) downhole logging probe. Deployed on an efficient semi-autonomous platform, PFTNA is being aggressively adopted in the Australian iron ore industry. The technology provides in-situ elemental analysis of the geological formation, delivering high accuracy, high efficiency, near realtime data from a sizeable measurement volume. In this paper we consider the application of the technology to copper. Whilst there are several operational components to such a value proposition, we focus on the benefits of improved gradeestimation. A simulated copper mine is used to model the quantum of improvement expected from a reduced grade-estimation error, which reduces the likelihood of misallocating material to the wrong destination, which in turn increases NPV.

The prime movers of the Centralia Project, the surface coal mine and the power plant, private utilities are very aware of public attitudes. They have established and maintain the reputation for leadership in public service and are genuinely concerned that this project initiate the pro-grams and design the hardware to answer the question :What will be the impact of the mine and the plant on the physical environment, i.e., the air, soil and the water." So in the beginning almost as soon as the decision had been made to go ahead with the project, officials of the two private utilities, Washington Water Power and Pacific Power & Light went on record and publicly stated time and again that the overall approach of the Operators would be to do all that was reasonably possible to safeguard the environment. This attitude became part of the thinking of the project planners, part of the design of the power plant and part of the plan for the surface mine. The coal to be mined is from the Skookumchuck formation. The formation is Late Eocene and is made up of poorly consolidated marine and non-marine deposits. The major overburden removal equipment is a bucket-wheel excavator -conveyor system and a 56 yard dragline. Mining of the coal will be done with truck and shovel. The coal is processed, washed and crushed to 1 ¼ " for delivery to the power plant. The muddy water created by the washing process is chemically treated and the solids removed by a thickener-vacuum filter system.

High fidelity commercial process simulation packages can be used at different stages of a greenfield project, from initial plant design to operator training in the later stages. However, there are several factors that make the software less attractive for small and medium size brownfield projects, such as the licensing cost and the fact-finding manpower required for model design and simulator maintenance. In this paper a different approach is described. The knowledge gathered from operating personnel was used to implement higher level models based on plant data, operating heuristics, and experience rather than detailed component-level models. The computing platform used was a low-cost, well-established, control system vendor-independent software. Throughout this paper we demonstrate the success of implementing this model-based approach using two industrial examples. The first example is a simulation of the carbon monoxide (CO) distribution system at a metallurgical complex. The purpose of this simulator was to test new control strategies and PLC programs prior to implementation. CO being a toxic combustible gas, validation of the suggested control system changes was necessary for plant safety. Simulation of specific operating conditions helped alleviate concerns and improved plant-wide acceptability of the new operating philosophy. The second example is a boiler simulator at a petrochemical plant. The operator training simulator (OTS) was designed as a platform for experienced operators to practice handling rare or abnormal conditions. A customized medium-fidelity model was developed for this targeted application where the cost of a full scale high-fidelity model could not be justified.

"The leaching kinetics was studied during leaching of indium-bearing zinc oxide to recover indium. The effects of temperature, sulfuric acidity, particle size, stirring rate on dissolution rate of indium were investigated. Results showed that the leaching process was controlled by chemical reaction at the condition of low sulfuric acid concentration. While the acidity increased to 1.8 mol/L, the leaching process was transformed into an internal diffusion controlling model . The corresponding value of reaction orders under low acidity and high acidity were 1.194, 0.156, respectively. Further calculation results indicated that the leaching reaction activation energy was only 10.97kJ/mol under the condition of high acid. The leaching rate constant was inversely proportional to the square of particle size, while the effect of stirring rate on leaching process was insignificant. The leaching process can be enhanced by increasing the temperature and acid concentration, as well as the decrease of particle size. And a final kinetics eqution was proposed. As part of a value engineering envisioned by East Coast Slurry, Weidlinger Associates, Inc. designed a unique elliptical slurry wall cofferdam for construction of the 65 ft. deep MWRA North Dorchester Pump Station. A conventional rectangle cofferdam with multiple levels of bracing would have been time consuming and costly and imposed a significant obstruction to the pump station construction. A circular slurry wall, while eliminating the bracings, conflicted with adjacent structures and required excessive backfilling around the final pump station structure. The ellipse shaped cofferdam fit the needs of the project well; however, it created a significant design challenge without the use of bracings. Unlike a circular cofferdam which primarily only has hoop stresses, the ellipse still has to be designed for horizontal bending moments in each panel because of the non-axial symmetric conditions. The more eccentric the cofferdam shape; the higher the horizontal bending. The challenge was to develop a three dimensional finite element model that could analyze both the hoop stresses and horizontal bending stresses above and below the bottom of excavation induced by soil and water pressure and unbalanced construction surcharge loads. This paper discusses the techniques used to model the soils and structure interactions and results of stresses on this challenging unbraced configuration.

Kosaka Smelter & Refinery has a history of more than a century as a metallurgical department belonging to Kosaka mine. It has treated for a long time the "Black Ore" or the complicated concentrates dressed from it. The "Black Ore" is composed of black sulfides. It contains not only valuable metals such as gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc but also some impurities like arsenic, antimony and bismuth. With the development of Kosaka's floatation technology, five kinds of concentrates (copper, zinc, lead, pyrite and barite) have been separated from the "Black Ore" but the separation was not complete and each concentrate contained some unfavorable impuritie. In 1980s the highly appreciated yen and the drop of the metals priees forced many domestic mines to close their operations. Since then Kosaka Smelter has changed its way of operation to a custom smelter. Now more than 95% of copper concentrates are imported to take advantage of this technology of "Black Ore" treatment. It mainly treats the raw materials that contain high gold and silver like the "Black Ore". Recently, Kosaka has been working on the recycling of the metals from the printed circuit board scraps and sludge which contain some precious metals. The volume of the recycled metal is continuously increasing.
