This report is analysis of the energy requirements of the energy requirements of the underground equipment of a third mine. An analysis of the use of energy and its distribution usually requires in a saving in energy consumption and the reduction of hazards. The distribution system should be designed to supply energy effectively and study for the efficient operation of all machines."

Centennial Coal operates the Springvale longwall mining operation which extracts coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale, and the neighbouring Angus Place mine, have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions where combinations of a relatively high stress regime and weak, laminated roof and extensive geological faulting has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life. Following development, the mines underground roadways can experience high levels of roof movement which may lead to roof falls. Multipoint wire extensometers are extensively used throughout the mine for roadway condition monitoring, and to reactively drive remedial strata support through trigger action response plans (TARPs).As a result of the use of high-density extensometer monitoring over a long period, the mines have an extensive archive of legacy data. Data processing has evolved over time in order to accommodate the increasing data volume, including direct data entry from the recently introduced hard-wired real-time monitoring instruments. It is likely that telemetric real-time instruments will be introduced in the future, which will cause another step change in data management requirements. This paper discusses the transition to and evolution of relational database management systems for extensometer and associated data.This paper also presents case studies of the use of a new software tool for reprocessing legacy data to enable time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. The software can be used proactively in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process. It interfaces directly with the widely used ExtoChart database software and can be presented with scale drawings of geological and geotechnical data to allow correlation of monitoring data results with risk factors.CITATION:Corbett, P and Sheffield, P, 2015. THE chief uses for copper are as a conductor of electricity and as the chief component in brasses and bronzes. For such uses, the copper must be of very high purity. H the impurities are zinc, iron, lead, arsenic, or antimony, they can be removed to a great extent by fire-refining. H, however, gold, silver, nickel, or cobalt are present, electrolytic refining is necessary. Electrolytic refining must be preceded by fire-refining and hence all impure copper must be fire-refined. The electrolytic refining of copper is most efficiently carried on when the impurities in the anodes are at a minimum. Some of the impurities tend to deposit with the copper at the cathode, while others remain in solution, decreasing the conductivity of the electrolyte and thus increasing the voltage necessary for refining. Since these dissolved impurities must be removed by continuous purifications, the amount of impurity in the anode copper should be reduced by furnace refining to some predetermined limit. Anode furnace operation aims to reduce these impurities to a minimum beyond which the cost of further furnace refining would exceed that of removing the remaining small amounts of impurities from the electrolyte. The anodes should have a fine-grain internal structure because any pieces of metal becoming detached from the anode during the electrolytic refining are inconvenient to remove from the cells and may cause short-circuits. Impurities tend to disrupt such a structure and thus form zones of weakness during corrosion. When the impurities are reduced to a satisfactory mini-mum, the anode, due to having a fine-grain structure, will corrode uniformly over the entire surface area exposed to the electrolyte. Oxides of the impurities may be volatile, in which case they pass off as flue gases, or they may form viscous slags having a lower specific gravity than molten copper, thus permitting their removal by skimming. Some impurities can be oxidized by introducing air into the bath. Due to the large solubility of oxygen in molten copper, oxygen is distributed uniformly throughout the bath and thus comes into intimate contact with all impurities. The oxides which are insoluble in molten. copper are removed either as flue gases or as slag.

O impacto das atividades do setor de mineração sobre o meio ambiente tem levado a estudos visando, tanto à utilização racional dos recursos naturais, quanto o tratamento de efluentes gerados durante os processos. A caracterização de efluentes é uma etapa importante, podendo apontar erros nos processos de beneficiamento, parâmetros em desacordo com a legislação ambiental e guiar etapas de desenvolvimento de técnicas do tratamento. Este trabalho consiste na caracterização de um efluente da etapa filtragem de uma mineradora de minério de ferro do quadrilátero ferrífero comparando os valores encontrados com as exigências da norma CONAMA 357/2005 e 430/2011, de forma a enquadrá-los na categoria de águas doces classe 1 e de lançamento de efluentes. O pH encontrado (9,8), turbidez (2133 NTU) e sólidos sedimentáveis (28mL/L), estão fora dos padrões permitidos e mostram grandes problemas em relação aos sólidos presentes na amostra. O diâmetro médio das partículas (8,54µm), indicou a predominância de partículas ultrafinas de difícil sedimentação. Os elementos majoritários Al, Fe, P e S, 0,296; 1,6; 0,218 e 26,5 mg/L, respectivamente, também apresentaram valores acima do permitido para água doce classe I. As análises indicaram que o efluente necessita de tratamento prévio para posterior descarte.

Após a escassez hídrica de 2014, a Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA), objetivando preservar os estoques de água dos reservatórios da bacia do Paraíba do Sul, autorizou, em março de 2015, uma redução de 190 para 110 m³/h na vazão do Canal de São Francisco. A mudança ocasionou o agravamento dos efeitos de intrusão da cunha salina da Baía de Sepetiba no dito canal, elevando os valores de condutividade, que impactou nas operações do complexo siderúrgico da Ternium, pois a água do mar passou a entrar nos sistemas de captação de água bruta. Com o objetivo de contornar o problema, a empresa decidiu implantar uma planta de osmose reversa, a fim de adequar a condutividade da água industrial aos parâmetros das especificações técnicas da planta de água desmineralizada. O presente trabalho descreve a otimização da dita planta à produção de água desmineralizada, que decorreu ainda na redução do número de regenerações das resinas de troca iônica, do consumo de produtos químicos, bem como no reuso do rejeito salino gerado no processo de osmose (Projeto Reuso).

The existing construction and demolition (C and D) waste recycling technologies and standards have been essentially focused on the production and use of coarse recycled aggregates. Very few papers focus on the production of recycled sand, although some previous results show that fine aggregates fraction represents around 40 to 60% (in mass) of the Brazilian waste and it is usually used as road sub-base or disposed in landfills. The quality of the recycled aggregate is strictly related to the content of porous and low strength phases, mainly the patches of cement remaining on recycled aggregate surface. Some technologies have already been described in the literature, even though, to the moment none of these technologies has clearly succeeded in reaching the large market available. This paper presents a summary of the main properties of the sand produced from C and D waste by tertiary crushing at vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI). Additionally mineral processing technologies were applied on the attained product, such as gravity concentration by shaking table and spirals and removal of cement paste by attrition. The main properties of recycled sand are discussed and compared to the previous C and D waste, respectively: particle size distribution, particle shape, chemical composition, cement paste content and porosity. The results demonstrates that the crushing allowed producing a VSI-sand with low porosity and water absorption due to the increasing on the content of silicates from natural rock phases and increasing liberation between these phases and porous cement paste; the particles from the attained product presented also a better shape (sphericity and aspect ratio). The attrition tests assayed on VSI recycled fine aggregates accomplished a further selective disaggregation of cement paste and other porous materials - the porosity was reduced from 10% to 7%. The concentration by shaking table at narrow sieve fractions led to a product with low porosity and reduced content of cement paste, however, concentration on spirals did not succeed since separation was performed essentially by the size of the particles. The heavy product from shaking table represented almost 75% in weight and has less than 60% recovery of CaO+LOI, and expressive reduction on porosity. The aim of producing sand from construction and demolition waste through mineral processing unit operations changes the recycling approach and contributes for up cycling the recycled sand. The exhaustion of sand deposits on Brazilian large centers, the increasing price and the construction boom encourages the development of alternative materials as construction raw material. The field of astrometallurgy is a growing area of study. Metal production on the Moon is likely to begin in less than a decade as major space agencies such as NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and CNSA (China National Space Administration) are preparing to construct permanent lunar bases. The utilisation of regolith to generate oxygen and metals is expected to be important in the development of a sustainable lunar habitat. This paper provides an overview of potential metallurgical processing methods for lunar conditions, emphasising the impact of lunar factors on slag chemistry. The interaction between regolith and the extracted metals, as well as their impact on slag composition and refractory performance, are critical considerations in metal production on the lunar surface. The initial research on lunar metallurgical technologies is focused on oxygen extraction and Fe-Si alloys are reported as the by-products of these processes. This paper delves into the fundamental thermodynamics associated with the carbothermic reduction of lunar regolith. Thermodynamic analysis using the FactSage™ ver 8.2 software package indicates that the Fe-Si alloy can be produced as a metallic product from the lunar regolith at temperatures ranging from 1400°C to 1600°C under terrestrial conditions. However, under ultra-high vacuum conditions (3 × 10-15 bar) on the Moon, the required operating temperature for producing ferrosilicon would be significantly reduced. Thermodynamic modelling results indicate that under lunar vacuum conditions, Fe-Si alloys only exist as solid phases at lower temperatures below 650°C. At higher temperatures, both Fe and Si are expected to be present in the gas phase. In this work, the carbothermic reduction of the Lunar Mare Simulant (LMS-1) is conducted under terrestrial conditions. The findings indicate that the process can readily yield Fe-Si alloys with 7–10 wt per cent Si at 1600°C. Additionally, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the resulting Fe-Si alloy indicates the presence of phosphorus up to 1 wt per cent.

This manual is divided into three major parts: 1. Machine dimensions; 2. operating instructions and; 3. Lubrication. Whenever front or rear, right or left arc mentioned it is assumed that the reader is standing behind the machine looking toward the boom. The boom is at the front of the machine. Safety When leaving machine parked on an incline turn wheels into the rib or block wheels. Do not run over power cables. Make sure your power cable is up out of the way so others can't run over it. Machine has a fire suppressor system for the power unit. The remote actuator (pressure cylinder) is located at the operator's station. Components and service procedures on page 59.

The cleaning circuit operation and its effect on the plant metallurgical performance, was characterized at Los Pelambres concentrator, Chile. Experimental data from columns, scavenger and regrinding stages was evaluated. Each stage was characterized by size fractions, and the interaction between stages (columns, scavenger, regrinding) as well as the effect that circulating loads had. The approach for describing the flotation equipment operation (cells and columns) considered the collection and froth zones separately. This methodology allows for the identification of the impact that particle size distribution has on the actual collection and froth transport processes, independently. In this way the effect of regrinding on flotation recovery and grade can be related to the corresponding operating variables, e.g. pulp flowrate, air flowrate, pulp level and pulp density, among others. The effect of gangue entrainment was considered using an empirical dimensionless correlation. The interaction between the circulating load and the overall performance of cleaning circuit was evaluated. The circulating load was defined as the ratio between the solid flowrate of scavenger concentrate over rougher concentrate. It was found that the overall cleaning flotation circuit (column-scavenger) can operate at a relatively high and constant recovery for a wide range of mineral treatment. This is possible when the scavenger has the capacity for compensating the decrease in column recovery at larger circulating loads. Under the condition of high overall cleaning recovery, the rougher stage closely represents the plant recovery. However, at large mineral treatment conditions, the design characteristics (e.g. concentrate transport channel capacity and transfer boxes) as well as instrumentation, control facilities and operation, became bottle-necked. "A ventilation study using tracer gas was conducted at a western US coal mine. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air exchanges between the face and worked-out area and to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. The mine operator uses a bleederless longwall ventilation system with a back return and a blowing mine ventilation system. The study was conducted on an active panel and included both underground and surface monitoring sites. The study used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) released as a slug on the longwall face and in the front of the gob inby the face. The velocity of the tracer gas movement in the gob was 0.019 m/s (3.7 fpm). The rate of movement for the overall tracer gas slug averaged about 0.0091 m/s (1.8 fpm). A separate tracer gas test initiated with the release of SF6 into the legs of the first shield showed the existence of more than one pathway of face air in the general direction from the headgate towards the tailgate corner. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob. A more detailed characterization of longwall system air and gas movement allows a mine to better assess its ventilation design for controlling gas on the face and in the gob. INTRODUCTION During a series of stakeholder meetings, a near unanimous concern was expressed related to maintenance of effective ventilation airflow on longwall faces. There was a strong interest expressed regarding the impacts of face length and caving characteristics on the ability to maintain adequate face airflow levels. This study seeks to understand and improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations across the longwall face by assessing airflow variations in terms of roof caving characteristics and face length. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers seek to identify flow paths of ventilation airflow on longwall panels with variations in roof caving characteristics and longwall face lengths. The project research aims to develop an understanding of the role of gas dynamics in variable broken rock, interactions with ventilation airflow and methane concentrations across the longwall face area. The research also addresses continuous ventilation monitoring along the shield line to provide early detection of gas exchanges between face and gob, and thus improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations around the face. In the context of this paper, the longwall gob refers to the pillared area behind the shields. This work reports on results from one project task to conduct field based research using a tracer gas to describe face air and gob area gas movement in a bleederless longwall ventilation system that incorporated a back return."

This paper presents the stability assessment of the steel pipe piles that are used to support a deadman beam to anchor an adjacent bulkhead wall. Finite element analyses are performed to assess the stability of the bulkhead wall and determine the required tie-back force to the pile. The piles are relatively close to the bulkhead wall such that their soil resistance wedge zones are not fully developed but truncated by the bulkhead wall. The reduced lateral resistance capacity of the anchor piles is determined by applying the Coulomb wedge method on the truncated soil passive zones between the pile and wall. Both the conventional soldier pile stability (in terms of force and moment equilibrium) and Winkler soil spring (for soil-pile-interaction) analyses are used to assess the stability of the anchor piles.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) threaten the wellbeing and livelihood of a large number of construction workers incurring a significant cost to society. We present a new method to monitor and diagnose MSD risks in the workplace. The sensing unit of the system is an optical encoder encompassed within a non-intrusive exoskeleton to measure the joint angle of interest. This sensor can be applied to ball-and-socket and hinge-type joints of the human body, such as the shoulder, elbow, and knee joints. The system is contactless and does not require markers or cameras. Angle measurements are acquired directly without mathematical post-processing, thereby avoiding numerical noise and drift challenges. The system is a simple, robust, and deployable, but it currently lacks resolution of parallel degrees of freedom.

The hot blast system is key ancillary plant equipment with respect to safe and stable operations during a long blast furnace campaign. Hot blast stove designs have been optimized to such an extent that in some cases, their lifetimes have surpassed the campaign lengths of the associated blast furnaces by a substantial margin, with the exception of the burner and a few critical areas. This article presents recent developments with respect to designing, building new and operating existing hot blast systems for a long lifetime and at optimized performance. These developments include fundamental improvements such as dome combustion designs as well as increasingly comprehensive packages for inspection, assessment and maintenance techniques. Examples of such techniques are burner replacement with the hot blast system at operating temperature, improved double shell approaches and TOFD measurement applications.

This paper details the extensive underpinning required to hold up the 39th street Bridge while demolishing its massive support piers and building a 30ft deep Cut/ Cover RR tunnel beneath it. The underpinning/SOE support required the construction of 16 large hand dug pits 36ft deep that were reinforced and concrete filled. In addition, an extensive steel support system was tied into the bridge super structure. All of the underpinning/tunnel construction was done while a 110ton crane sat directly atop the heavily trafficked – 66 ft. wide bridge. The tunnel excavation, concrete lining and final bridge pier support work will also be presented. All work was done within 5ft of active mainline tracks and that required tight grouting behind all lagging to eliminate any track settlement.

Lithium Australia NL (ASX:LIT) and ANSTO Minerals have been working together since 2015 on the development of halide accelerated leaching for the extraction of lithium from lithium-bearing micas, spodumene and clays. This technology has been termed SiLeach® process. The driving force behind development of the SiLeach® process, initially, was to develop a hydrometallurgical process to extract lithium from micas and spodumene without the need for the energy intensive, high temperature processing conventionally applied to lithium extraction. This driving force remains today and continues to hold promise in realising the value of previously under-utilised lithium resources. A comprehensive understanding of the technology and its applicability to the processing of micas and spodumene currently exists, and the flowsheet has been rigorously piloted. This report discusses some of the chemistry and geochemistry of cesium and rubidium. Knowledge of the cesium and rubidium content of oilfield waters aids in resolving the origin of waters and petroleum, exploring for petroleum and other valuable minerals, discovering water pollution sources, and augmenting the knowledge of geologic formations. The methods described in this report permit the detection of less than 0.01 mg/l of cesium and/or rubidium in a complex oilfield brine or water. Solvents possessing high-dielectric constants were evaluated for their ability to extract cesium and rubidium tetraphenylboron from oilfield waters and for their flame emission characteristics. Nitroethane was selected and used for the extraction and flame spectrophotometric determinations because it gave the highest sensitivity. Cesium 137 and rubidium 86 were used to determine the extraction efficiencies, which were about 87 percent and 58 percent respectively using a single 10 ml nitroethane extraction from a distilled water matrix. The standard deviation of the determination was 0.0008 mg for cesium and 0.0007 mg for rubidium in the 0.01 mg range.
