El presente texto revisa algunos aspectos del programa de salud ocupacional en las compañías mineras aplicados en el ambiente de trabajo, la explotación de minas y el desarrollo de su control. Primeramente, se describe los riesgos encontrados en las condiciones de trabajo como la composición química del ambiente, la inhalación de polvo y gases en el aire del subsuelo. Como segundo punto, refiere las condiciones de seguridad de la mina, donde se sugiere que el personal de seguridad sea el más idóneo para la dirección del programa de seguridad. Para ello, es importante su capacitación en técnicas de evaluación y control, así como la participación de los médicos de la compañía. Por último, se mencionan algunas medidas de control en las minas, tales como el uso de equipos detectores de gases que determinen los contaminantes sólidos y gaseosos, la compra de un equipo detector de Cu, lámpara de seguridad y la instalación de un equipo de laboratorio químico adecuado,etc.

Although salmonid fishes (including Pacific salmon and trout) have only intermediate sensitivity to copper (Cu) for traditional toxicity endpoints (survival, growth, and reproduction) and thus do not ?drive? the freshwater Cu criteria (e.g., see species-sensitivity ranking in US EPA 2007), Cu concentrations as low as 1 to 2 µg/L have been reported to impair olfaction (the sense of smell) in salmonids in laboratory experiments using dilute fresh water (see references in Meyer and Adams 2010 and DeForest et al. 2011). Olfaction is crucial to predator avoidance, recognition of kin, and reproductive synchronization (Baldwin et al. 2003); and Cu is of general ecotoxicological concern because it can be present in acid/mine rock drainage, industrial and municipal effluents, agricultural runoff, and urban stormwater runoff (Meyer et al. 2007). Therefore, there is public concern that the current regulation of Cu in surface waters is not stringent enough to protect salmonid fishes against olfactory impairment (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). Because the toxicity of metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry [e.g., acute toxicity of Cu generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ + Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase; Meyer et al. 2007], hardness-based freshwater criteria for metals are lower at lower water hardness. The recently-developed biotic ligand model (BLM) explicitly takes into account all four of those water chemistry parameters and the concentrations of other major inorganic cations (Na+, K+) and anions (Cl-, SO42-) to predict the acute toxicity of cationic metals (e.g., Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) to aquatic organisms; and the BLM has been adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to calculate acute and chronic national freshwater criteria for Cu (US EPA 2007). Consistent with observations of Cu toxicity to aquatic organisms, BLM-based Cu criteria generally are lower at lower pH, water hardness, alkalinity, and DOC concentrations. Therefore, although threshold concentrations for olfactory impairment by Cu can be low in dilute fresh waters, the corresponding hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria for the same waters also tend to be low. This leads to a logical question: Are Cu criteria already protective against impairment of olfaction in salmonid fishes, thus obviating the need to decrease those criteria even lower to protect against adverse effects to this physiological/ecotoxicological endpoint? Herein, we demonstrate that in all studies conducted to date, the US EPA?s BLM-based freshwater Cu criteria would have been protective against olfactory impairment in salmonid fishes, but the US EPA?s hardness-based criteria would not always have been protective. This distinction is important because all 50 States in the USA still use hardness-based Cu criteria in their water quality standards, and only some of the States allow use of the BLM to calculate site-specific Cu criteria. Additionally, in the absence of empirical results for calibration of a saltwater Cu-olfactory model, we demonstrate that a proposed unified freshwater-saltwater Cu-olfactory BLM predicts the US EPA?s current saltwater Cu criteria would be protective against olfactory impairment caused by Cu in sea water.

Suncor Energy currently mines approximately nine hundred thousand tonnes of ore and waste per day at its open pit operations in the Athabasca Oilsands near Fort McMurray, Alberta. Modeling these deposits for planning purposes is particularly challenging given the characteristics associated with the deposit - stratigraphic deposition coupled with gradational grade distribution. The identification of ore and waste is a combination of bitumen cutoff grade, minimum mining thickness and separable waste thickness subject to criteria established by provincial regulatory agencies. Suncor along with Mincom Inc. have collaborated on this project to derive a methodology, automated by computer software, to streamline the ore and waste identification process. This paper explains the methodology and programs created to identify ore and waste in use at Suncor Energy and how this identification is used to categorize reserves and to generate mine design surfaces.

Crushing Plant Process Optimisation Design of processes in order to find the most efficient solution to a specific task is a difficult problem. Often the number of solutions are large and the optimal solution is therefore difficult to identify. Crushing plant process design is no exception from this statement. In order to find the best solution issues like equipment selection and process configuration must be mastered. The solution must both be technically feasible and preferably have a low operating cost. Since crushing plant design is a complex task with a large solution space it is basically impossible to master without a specialised tool. For a long time simulation softwares have been used to assist in the design process. These tools only give answers for how a user defined plant will operate. There are no tools with capabilities to consider different design options in order to determine what the most efficient solution looks like. In this paper a method for crushing plant design optimisation is presented. The novel method utilises a combined optimisation routine and expert system in order to find the most cost efficient solution to a given process task. The user will only need to define the feed material properties, the process capacity, and the end product requirements. The developed system will find the solution lowest production cost per ton.

The objectives of this study were the evaluation of the technical and economical feasibility of utilizing color and color infrared aerial photography to satisfy some informational needs for pre-mine planning, mine progress monitoring, and reclamation monitoring. Seven aerial data collection missions were conducted within a two year period over strip mine sites in Pennsylvania. Scales of 1:6,000; 1:12,000; 1:24,000; and 1:48,000 were flown on the first aerial mission. The 1:12,000 was chosen as the optimal scale for the remaining six flights. An extensive literature and legislative review and discussions with strip mine operators identified the informational parameters that could possibly be obtained from aerial photography. Interpretability accuracies were evaluated for parameters in the broad categories of land use, soils, water, vegetation, and geology. Seasonal interpretation characteristics were noted for infrared photography. Man hours for photointerpretation and costs of aerial data collection were monitored closely and incorporated into a cost benefit analysis. Those parameters that could be mapped, identified, or measured with accuracies =75 percent were incorporated into a photointerpretation training manual. An additional analysis was performed to determine the applicability of the interpretation methodologies and results developed for Eastern sites to Western surface coal mining sites. In addition, a separate aerial photographic interpretation manual was produced during this contract. It is intended to be utilized by eastern and midwestern surface mine operators and regulatory personnel.

The Crandon deposit, located in northern Wisconsin, is a 65.8 million ton Precambrian volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit which averages 1.4% copper and 5.8% zinc. The deposit is classic in origin, mineralogy and shape. Comprehensive understanding of the geology of both the deposit and the project site has been fundamental to the credibility and success of Project feasibility studies and regulatory permit preparation. Mine development in the current investment and regulatory climate requires thorough and timely application of geologic tools. From 1977-1980 geologic activities were focused on the typical objectives of orebody delineation, reserve estimation, depositional geology, and general site investigation. Results from these programs formed the basis for the Project's preliminary feasibility studies. Since 1981 further geologic investigations have provided criteria for project design, site management, and operational permitting. Activities have included mine entry position definition drilling, developing geostatistical reserve modeling, large diameter (150 mm) core drilling for mill pilot samples, rock mecha¬nics testing, and evaluation of the glacial overburden/deposit geohydrology for computer simulation.

Zinc concentrates assaying approximately 54% zinc and 30% sulfur are roasted in a suspension type roaster to yield a zinc oxide calcine assaying about 65% zinc and 0.40% sulfur. This calcine is the feed material to the sulfuric acid leaching section of an Electrolytic Zinc Plant. The SO2 gases resulting from the elimination of sulfur from the concentrates are passed through a waste heat boiler for the generation of high pressure steam, cleaned by a baghouse, and delivered to the humidifying tower of a sulfuric acid plant system. The gases are then treated in a mist precipitator for final fume removal and then converted to sulfur trioxide in a three pass contact system using vanadium pentoxide catalyst for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. Waste heat steam is used to power the steam turbine which drives the acid plant blower.

Coal is our most abundant, low cost energy resource. Expansion of its use is being challenged due to "SO2 emission" regulation with even more restrictive legislation pending. High quality coal reserves are becoming more limited due to greater use in recent years. Aids to allow more use of coal in today's environment include beneficiation of coal before combustion and scrubbing the emissions from coal during combustion. Dow's efforts to help meet these challenges by beneficiating coal include true heavy media gravity separations with chlorinated solvents and liquid/liquid partitioning processes and "Dow Solvent Recovery Technology" to recover the solvent from product (or floats) and rejects (sinks), The objectives of the efforts to clean coal are to reduce sulfur and ash. In this paper, the solvents will be described; a general flow diagram presented; some of the results on upgrading various coals will be described, and projected costs of full-scale plants using chlorinated solvents will be compared to conventional cleaning plants.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a project to build a cable-stayed bridge and border crossing across the Detroit River. With a span length of 2,800-ft (853.4 meters), the Gordie Howe International Bridge will have the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America. Each tower has two legs that are supported by six drilled shafts each for a total of 12. The tower shafts are 9.84 feet in diameter (3-m) and extend well into bedrock. 17 each, 6.6 feet (2-m) drilled shafts were built to support the aging river bulkhead and replace shipping bollards. In addition to shallow groundwater fed by the Detroit River, artesian conditions at depth result in a water head that is approximately 17.2-ft (5.2-m) above surface. At 95-ft (29-m) below grade Dundee Limestone, of the Detroit River Group, is moderately weathered and fracture density decreases with depth. The Dundee Limestone strength ranges from 8-ksi (55.1-MPa) to 12-ksi (82-MPa) and may carry hydrogen sulfide in fractures. Working through casing that sticks three stories out of the ground is less than ideal, but was necessary to maintain a positive fluid head and prevent artesian-related quality issues. The sheer scale of the bridge forces required a load test configuration that could impart an equivalent static load of over 38,000,000 pounds (170-MN). A suite of QA/QC tests was developed to ensure the shafts would meet the project plans and specifications to include critical base cleanliness criteria. Interesting CSL and TIP results obtained highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each test method. Cleaning drilling fluids with a centrifuge allowed recycling of product and reduced exposure to environmental contaminate exposure. Having large construction equipment working next to the river presented challenges in working pad design. A driven pile system was developed to support high oscillator forces and protect the aging seawall.

Most geologic and mining engineering consulting firms* began to experience the recession with declining billing levels, number of inquiries, and proposal requests in late 1981 or early 1982. As of today, most of them have been functioning at reduced income levels for nearly a year. And while many consulting firms have apparently reached a stabilized income level, they can see little prospect for attaining normal (pre-late 1981) billing levels and income for the remainder of 1983. A few firms have escaped being affected by the recession. Such com panies almost without exception are small (fewer than 20 personnel), offer a limited range in technical capabilities, and tend to be highly specialized in a particular niche. They include those specializing in the heap leaching of precious metals ores, in ground water testing programs, and in the derivation of computer-aided programs to monitor particular mineral processing functions. Those firms affected by the economic downturn have instituted a variety of policies and undertaken actions to cope with significantly reduced incomes to bring fixed costs in line with the depressed demand for services. These changes fall into the following broad categories: • management and management practices; • markets and market definition; • marketing and the pursuit of assignments; and • administration and personnel relationships. Not all of the perceived changes have necessarily been instituted by every consulting firm, and any one appears sporadically instituted. Management and Management Practices In favorable times the managers, and often the owners of the equity, of consulting firms tend to concentrate their attention on the part of the business they find most satisfying and enjoyable. For some, this means acting as project or assignment leaders, even undertaking a specific technical aspect of the job. For others, it means constant marketing with the associated heavy travel and entertainment schedules. In unfavorable conditions, such as the current recession, managers tend to spread themselves far more thinly, expending time and effort on all facets of the business including marketing, proposal preparation and cost estimating, budgeting, general administration, accounting and cash flow monitoring, project/assignment overview, and actual client work. The manager who in favorable times concentrated on client work is now less billable. The manager who concentrated on marketing is somewhat more billable. The manager now needs to pay attention to and expend equal effort on each facet of the business just to keep all the facets in relative balance. Falling behind schedule on a client job or carrying an unduly large percentage of accounts receivable exact a cost to the firm. Clearly the absolute cost to the firm is the same whether demand for service is good or slack. But in periods of slack demand the firm is frequently less able or even unable to bear such costs. Marketing and Market Definition Markets appear to have undergone some significant changes: • Federal and state governments have assumed a greater importance as providers of work vis-a-vis both industry and private groups. • Projects with increase-in-capacity aspects have given way to projects with maintenance or reduced operating cost aspects. • Projects searching for new deposits of minerals in generally new locations have given way to projects reviewing known mineral districts or known deposits. • Industrial mineral and mining companies have exhibited a great propensity to cut back the use of consultants and to undertake as much work as possible in-house. Further-more, a number of industrial mineral and mining companies have entered the competitive arena with consulting firms, submitting proposals (usually to the federal government) in an effort to keep their staffs intact and occupied. In response, consulting firms have reevaluated their capabilities by reviewing old work and reassessing personnel. The purpose is to broaden the services offered and the potential client base, thus redefining the available market. For example, a firm specializing in assessment of technical and cost parameters of a deposit would normally assist a prospective lender in judging the deposit's suitability for project financing. That same company could easily expand into the field of analyzing production costs for an individual operation -something that is needed in periods when lower prices reduce profit margins. Similarly, a firm that has confined such economic assistance to commercial banks could expand to provide its expertise to other lending and even equity buying in-stitutions such as insurance companies. "The valuation of mineral properties in the U.S. is only partially regulated. The regulations which have jurisdiction or impact appear to have such mainly as a consequence of unintended fallout, since the regulations were designed for other purposes. Court case history can also be important. The combined results are a mixture of bad and good, with important lessons to be learned.Since 1981, the Securities and Exchange Commission has prohibited U.S. listed companies from reporting quantitative estimates of mineralization and the value of mineralization, other than proven and probable reserves. This results in the minerals appraiser (valuator) working with a shortage of data in his everyday work, both on the subject property and in sales analysis.Between 1989 and 1995, all 50 states and essentially all Federal agencies adopted the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) for real property appraisals (valuations). The major national appraisal societies also require their members to abide by USPAP. A significant portion of minerals appraisals must now follow these standards. This paper will discuss the content of USPAP. It provides a very good framework for the valuation of a minerals property or a mine, both as real property and as a business. However, the credentialing standards for real property appraisers are now prohibitive for minerals appraisers."

A supply chain encompasses all the activities associated with the flow and transformation of goods from the raw materials stage(extraction), through to the end user. Supply chain management (SCM) is the integration of these activities through improved supply chain relationship, to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage and it rests on its ability to provide the right goods and services when and where needed. The supply chain is the vital component of any company?s value chain which links the operating processes to its supplier and customer. The globalization of business promises to offer new and unique challenges for the supply chain competencies of most firms. Challenges will also increase in the environmental aspects of supply chain often referred to as ?Green Issues?. The supply chain of mining industry comprises of the flow of material and information from the mine site, to processing and loading for transport, to the customer. However, due to recent changing environmental requirements affecting mining and mineral processing operations, increasing attention is given to developing environmental management (EM) strategies for the mineral supply chain. This paper focuses on: ? Environmental factors leading to the development of an extended environmental supply chain, ? Additional challenges presented by the extension, ? Performance measures appropriate for the extended supply chain, ? Developing a general procedure towards achieving and maintaining the green supply chain.

ABSTRACT The SART (sulphidization, acidification, recycle, and thickening) process is an effective way to separate copper and cyanide in the waste stream of gold processing plants using cyanidation. Factorial experimentation has been conducted to create models of copper recovery, cyanide recovery, acid addition, and oxidation/reduction potential during SART. Economic analysis of the resultant models showed that SART is best operated with a sulphide-to-copper molar ratio of approximately 0.56, pH of 4, and a minimized cyanide-to-copper molar ratio. The experiments also showed th0at residence time can have drastic impacts on SART performance.

These reporting standards are recognised and adopted world-wide for market-related reporting and financial investment.The IRT is not an international reporting code and does not supersede existing national reporting standards. Keywords: Copper, ion exchange, sulfonic acid, bis-picolylamine, ion exchange modeling, ion exchange kinetics As part of an investigation into the feasibility of using ion exchange resins to recover copper from aqueous waste streams generated during the manufacturing of semiconductor devices, the uptake of copper onto two ion exchange resins was investigated. The resins studied were DOWEX G-26, a standard gel type sulfonic acid resin, and DOWEX M4195, a macroporous chelating resin with a bis-picolylamine functional group. The equilibrium and kinetic behavior of the uptake of copper were investigated over a range of copper concentrations with constant sulfate concentration and different levels of acidity. The homogeneous structure of the G-26 resin yields equilibrium relationships that fit the Langmuir equation, and equilibration times of less than 30 minutes. The uptake behavior of M4195 is complicated by the need to absorb co-ions to maintain electroneutrality, resulting in uptake profiles that change character with increasing copper concentrations, and extended equilibration times.

Since the late 60's, planners at American Natural have known that natural gas supplies from traditional sources will be insufficient to maintain a consistently high level of service in the near future. This dwindling of traditional gas reserves will force American Natural and other gas companies to seek new and more exotic sources of supply. In recent years a number of alternative supply sources were considered, including arctic gas, LNG, and SNG based on naptha, LPG and coal feedstocks. Several combinations, all of which included SNG from coal were selected as the most suitable alternative sources of gas supply for American Natural, and thus our company embarked on the formation of a coal gasification project in the early 70's. Work began with the evaluation of available coal supplies in the United States in late 1970. Western North Dakota was selected for several reasons: large contiguous reserves of lignite were available near the surface, similar to German brown coal for which the Lurgi gasification process was originally developed; the conditions for land reclamation in the area are favorable; and the people in the area have a positive attitude toward well ordered development.

"Past heap leach design has evaluated hydrodynamic parameters based on a uniform particle size of heap material, but has ignored the equal importance of the instability of fine migration within heap stack in the beginning stages of the irrigation process. The proposed probabilistic model evaluates internal fine erosion and segregation potential of well-graded crushed ores by considering the entire particle size distribution shape and site compaction degree. Using this model, unsaturated flow model parameters were successfully evaluated based on synthesized soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC). Additionally, one-dimensional unsaturated transient flow modeling with Hydrus 1D® showed that the different recovery efficiencies of heap material under unsaturated flow patterns depending on the particle size distribution and compaction degree of heap material. Agglomeration preprocess employed by most heap leach sites can reduce the potential of fine erosion within heap material significantly, but internal stability of crushed ores and hydrodynamic-based analysis of heap material’s pore structure is equally important in the prescreening stage in order to improve efficiency of the heap leach and avoid a costly agglomeration process. INTRODUCTION Accurate estimation of heap leach recovery is a difficult task due to the variety of design parameters that need to be considered - such as geochemistry, hydro-dynamics, and geotechnical design aspects, most notably particle size distribution through the process of agglomeration. After agglomeration techniques were introduced to heap leach design, the influence of particle size distribution and compaction degree in enhanced heap leach recovery has been neglected. The main purpose of agglomeration is to prevent fine segregation and internal erosion during and after heap stacking for well graded crushed ores, which will eventually diminish heap reach recovery. Recent studies show that agglomerated heap materials that had been consolidated at 10 meters below heap surface can release the fines after contact time with lixiviant to the compacted heap material and produce poor drainage performance (Milczarek et al, 2013). It must be noted that engineers and practitioners should investigate feasibility of agglomeration benefit prior to heap leach design because the agglomeration process can incur up to 20 or 30% of project costs. Internal stability of stacked heap material is mainly governed by the particle size distribution of crushed ores. Depending on this stability, segregation and internal erosion of fines can be mitigated by the application of moderate compaction effort during heap construction. Investigation of segregation and internal erosion potential therefore takes precedence for well graded crushed ore since reaction time and contact area with lixivant are greater in finer ores."

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed personal-computer-based data acquisition, instrumentation, and mine visualization and modeling techniques to evaluate a mine accessway in a deep hard-rock mine in northern Idaho. These techniques were applied to a mine shaft in a large silver mine that has been in operation for many years. A very deep, rectangular, timber-supported shaft extending to depths exceeding 2.3 km (7,500 ft) had been deforming continuously as a result of nearby mining, resulting in operational problems. Preliminary visual observations and rock and support monitoring confirmed that severe diagonal distortion was occurring. Extensive field measurements and data analysis confirmed initial observations, provided insights into the cause of deformation, and defined a general approach to structural modeling. Computer analysis of the problem was initiated by developing a three-dimensional model of the terrain. This represented a volume of rock approximately 80 km3 (40 x 1010 ft3) and an area on the surface surrounding the mine 9 km2 (3 square miles). Based on this model, a three-dimensional, finite- element analysis was conducted to establish boundary conditions for sequentially more detailed two- and three-dimensional submodels of the shaft area. Results from the computer study are being used to develop new approaches to mine design and to provide design guidelines for deep mine accessways subject to severe rock-mass loading conditions.
