Split Engineering is a truly customer oriented company dedicated to providing quantified fragmentation information of the highest integrity to enable process management and control. Technical decisions, blasting costs, operational efficiency and productivity and equipment performance can all be related to optimum fragmentation. In the past, the lack of an easy, non-disruptive, economical measuring technique has meant that, in most cases, rock fragmentation has not been defined in quantitative terms. Now, the Split-Desktop@ software provides an economical alternative to manual sampling and screening and an objective measure rather than subjective qualitative estimates. This workshop will present the latest features of the Split-Desktop@ software and show users how to quickly get quantifiable results from their blast fragmentation. A step-by-step demonstration will display the software’s flexibility, user-friendly options, and ease of use. Outlining where other mines have benefited from using the Split-Desktop@ software will provide insight to a wide range of software uses and potential applications like creating a database of geologic zone specific post-blast fragmentation information, underground draw point monitoring, stockpile, leach pile, and waste dump size measurement and monitoring, as well as many other applications.

Intelligent systems (IS) technologies have received much attention in a wide range of process engineering applications including process operations. With the revolutionary progress in information and computer technologies applying the latest technologies in metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to both management and technical teams. Objects and components are changing the way everyone relates to their computer and networks. Goals of real time performance monitoring includes maximizing the profitability by maximizing production, improving efficiency, attending product quality, costs, maintenance, environmental and safety regulations. Designers must consider the greatly expanded desktop computing, Microsoft object technology, Internet and how to build these systems. This paper discusses some opportunities and challenges using objects, components in designing applications and integrating intelligent systems tools. Two examples using performance equations and IS technologies applied to mineral processing are presented.

"Hydraulically jacked piles, herein referred to as jacked piles, are commonly used for underpinning existing structures to arrest settlement or augment an existing foundation for higher loads. They consist of steel pipe segments coupled together and jacked into the ground using a hydraulic ram. Pipe sections can vary in size from 3"" diameter to 18"" diameter or larger. Jacking resistance is typically provided by dead loads of existing structures. This type of piling system has been utilized for foundation underpinning, repair, and augmentation for more than 120 years, yet little has been published on the capacity, installation standards, and reliability of these systems. Pile load tests from a number of projects are presented and analysed. The data show that previous methods of jacked pile capacity and depth prediction are crude at best. Empirical relationships between capacity, depth, soil type, and standard penetration resistance blow count contain a high degree of scatter. Scatter in the data indicate capacity prediction for jacked piles needs further research and refinement.INTRODUCTIONPush pier, resistance pile, steel pier, and jacked pile are some of the names often applied to hydraulically jacked piles used for underpinning. The term ‘jacked pile’ is more common in building codes and will be used herein. Although jacked piles can be installed for new construction, this paper is focused on piles used for support of existing structures.Jacked piles consist of short segments of pipe or structural steel tube that are coupled together and forced into the ground using a hydraulic ram fastened to or beneath a footing, stem wall, or grade beam of an existing structure. In this way, the weight of the structure provides the resistance necessary to force the pile into the ground. A factor of safety can be achieved in design by redundancy, which is consecutively installing more than one jacked pile to support the same portion of foundation. Installing jacked piles consecutively using the same dead load and then releasing the load after each pile installation allows one to continue adding piles to the same general area until a total aggregate capacity is achieved to account for anticipated dead plus live loads and a desired factor of safety for that area.An engineering schematic of an example jacked pile connected to a footing foundation is shown in Figure 1. Modern jacked piles typically incorporate a steel bracket. There are many sizes and styles of brackets available. Some categories include plate brackets that bolt to the outside of an existing foundation wall, wide and narrow angle brackets that extend under existing footings, pin brackets for attachment to structural steel, and reverse angle brackets for attachment to footing and wall. Table 1 lists example brackets and their benefits."

Aurum Reef Resources is a provincially owned unlisted public company which holds a number of prospecting licences over Otago hard rock historically active minesites. The Bullendale Licence 31 1845 was applied for in 1985, granted 1991, including a DoC special condition allowing re-opening of the historic workings. The underground workings were commenced in 1862 and up to the mine's closure in 1906 some 40 000 ounces were produced at an average grade of 15.5 g Au/t. The purpose of the summer 1991 work programme was to enter the workings in an attempt to observe and sample the mullock between the lodes operated by the early miners. This objective was achieved on the third attempt. Samples were taken and subsequently a contract geologist resampled the workings and prepared a report indicating the Bullendale lode zone to be generally mineralised. Mullock interlode and schist foot-wall consistently returned assays over 0.5 g/t.

Roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines continue to experience overexposure to respirable dust. One potential source of dust in roof bolting operations is the exhaust from the roof bolter dust collection system. A wet exhaust conditioner (?water box?) has been developed to reduce dust emissions from the exhaust of the vacuum dust collection system on roof bolting machines. The exhaust conditioner consists of a muffler chamber and a water chamber with four internal partitions to direct airflow over the surface of the water. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a series of laboratory tests to assess the respirable dust capture ability of this device as compared to the standard exhaust muffler. To determine the dust collection efficiency, both devices were placed in the exhaust stream of a simulated roof bolter dust collection system. Gravimetric samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the exhaust conditioner and muffler to evaluate the ability to capture both respirable coal and limestone dust. Researchers observed a 41 percent reduction in dust concentrations for the water exhaust conditioner in the laboratory configuration. Significant levels of dust deposition in the sampling chambers may have contributed to this effective capture rate.

Since addressing the Institute a year ago on The Future of the Copper Industry (l), many things have happened, most of them bad. It has been a hard year for profits and prophets. It was, therefore, with consider-able perturbation that I accepted the gracious invitation of your Committee to reappear. On reviewing my remarks of a year ago, I. have wondered whether, under pressure of more important matters, the Committee had neglected to make a note of them, or whether they felt that further explanations from me were in order. In either event, I am glad that I am here and welcome the opportunity to make any contribution I can to a clearer understanding of the problems of copper to those concerned. The English-speaking nations own 80 per cent of the present world-production of the metal. Col. P. E. Barbour, Secretary of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and I recently completed an estimate of the known world resources of copper. We placed the figure, in round numbers, at 100,000,000 tons of metal. Of this amount, about one-third lies in the United States, one-third in the British Empire, and one-third in South America; and all but 4 per cent of this is owned by British Empire and United States capital. Our figures do not include any estimates for Russia, Japan, or Europe, on which there are no available data. It is true, consequently, that the British Empire and the United States are the ones concerned. It seems to me to be a matter of great importance to the world at large, and of even greater importance to those nations themselves, that the known sources of supply of this metal, so essential both in peace and war, rest so strongly in their hands. I cannot believe that in the long run they will neglect their responsibilities in the wise administration of these resources.

The ore treated at the reduction plant (called Yangdei) of the Chiksan -Mining Co., Korea, is brought from four of the company mines, and from the small tribute mines. The largest shipments conic from Sajunkohl mule, situated about a mile and a half from the mill (Fig. 1). The ore is quartz of medium hardness. The overage assay value in gold is $6.95 per ton. At the mine the ore is put into bin,, and is Mien trammed over an 8 per cent. grade to the tipple bins above the mill, where the ore is drawn through the hull holes as desired. The capacity of the tipple bins is about 3,500 tons. On, from Moonsukohl, Chung Tarrie, Yang Chun, and the tribute mines is brought in by bulls and bull wagons. "IntroductionA process for production of magnesium by carbothermal reduction was developed at Padentheirm, Austria, by the Austro Americanische Magnesit Corporation& an independent investigation of this and other processes was started in 1937 by the Bureau of Mines at Pullman, Wash., with the cooperation of Washington State College. 10/ A preliminary study of the Radentheirm pro¬cess, as revealed by the meager information then available, demonstrated the following two major disadvantages,The use of hydrogen for shock cooling requires an enormous volume of gas - about 1,000 cubic feet for condensing each pound of metal as a pyrophoric dust which must be completely separated from this gas. Then if the gas is to be recycled for repeated use, the CO produced by the reduction reaction must be separated from the hydrogen. These separations are costly from the standpoint of equipment and operation. 11/The condensate is an impure, pyrophoric metal powder that must be purified and converted to coherent form. This is accomplished by distillation or sublimation of the metal. Distillation on a large scale involves difficulties inherent in the high boiling point (1,107° C.) and the chemical activity of the metal. To avoid these difficulties, the metal is sublimed at 600° C. and of very low pressure. This is quite easily carried out as a batch operation but is a costly procedure. A continuous sublimation process has not been accompli shed."

"In November 2004, the residents of the City of Nanaimo, B.C., Canada voted to approve a new conference centre as the centrepiece of a proposed revitalization project for the city’s historic downtown core. The proposal goal was to replace a cluster of derelict buildings with a dynamic and modern complex that would connect existing city facilities to a new conference facility, the Vancouver Island Conference Centre (VICC). The conference centre is expected to create 150 full-time jobs, attract visitors/ delegates from across North America and generate new economic opportunities for local businesses.However, the proposed site posed a number of geotechnical and geoenvironmental challenges. As is often the case with coastal cities, historic growth of the Nanaimo downtown and harbour area was achieved through reclamation of former waterfront areas and inlets. These areas were often infilled with random fills and even wastes, leaving a legacy of variable density heterogeneous fills contaminated with a variety of pollutants. Preliminary assessment of the site indicated a high likelihood of a requirement for deep foundations, a high risk of liquefaction in the event of an earthquake and the presence of both soil and groundwater contamination. Construction would be further complicated by the requirement for two levels of basement parking and the proximity of adjacent buildings and major roadways to the work area.With a limited budget (fixed by the referendum) and timeframe, the city needed a cost-effective solution to proceed with construction. A number of options were considered, but an innovative design using leading-edge Cutter Soil Mixer (CSM) technology best met the geotechnical and budgetary requirements of the site. The CSM approach also addressed the environmental concerns of contaminated soils and groundwater. Golder Associates Innovative Applications (GAIA) Inc., in association with the designers of their parent company Golder Associates Ltd. (Golder), proposed the CSM technology — at the time the first North American application."

The environmental and economic impacts of a significant dependence on fossil fuels are affecting the future of sectors such as of mining. These impacts are prompting the Australian Government to seek solutions for reducing its dependence on fossil fuels more generally, such developing clean energy and improving energy efficiency. However, limited research has been undertaken to assess the potential synergies between clean energy and mining in an uncertain global future. This paper analyses current energy use by mining in Australia and reviews the drivers and opportunities for energy efficiency and cleaner energy technologies to be coupled to mining under three future scenarios. Linkages between mining and clean energy are investigated for three global scenarios for mining and metals to 2030, developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), namely Green Trade Alliance, Rebased Globalism and Resource Security. These scenarios are applied to assess how they could change the barriers, opportunities and trade-offs required for the development of a more sustainable energy sources by the minerals industry in Australia.

"The Preston East Dome gold mine is in the southeastern part of Porcupine district, Ontario, 5 miles southeast of Timmins, and immediately south of the property of Dome Mines, Limited.The claims now owned by this Company were originally staked in 1909. After the property had remained dormant for many years, the present Company was organized in 1936 to resume development operations. Two shafts had been sunk: at the time of the early work on the claims, but lateral work from these failed to reach the ore deposits. A successful diamond drilling campaign undertaken under the direction of D. G. H. Wright, however, was followed by the sinking of a five-compartment shaft arid the erection of a mill. From the start of operations to the end of 1944, 1,292,000 tons of ore averaging $11.60 in gold a ton have been mined.An outstanding feature in this mine is the occurrence of the major gold deposits in quartz porphyry intrusives, though minor deposits are also found in the adjacent Keewatin volcanics. Research in the field of cut-off grade optimisation has shown a relationship between cut-off grade, project life and net present value (NPV). Lane’s theory demonstrates that cut-off grades can be optimised in order to maximise project profitability. Although the theory forms the basis for many open pit mining projects, application of the theory in underground mining remains limited to-date. The main reason for this is the complex interaction between all processes in underground mine planning, which makes it difficult to apply Lane’s mathematical optimisation approach.Recently a new stope optimiser product was released. The AMS Stope Optimiser automates the design of underground stopes at user-defined cut-off grades and allows for rapid evaluation of mine designs at different cut-off grades. Using this software, an optimisation approach was developed and validated on an underground gold deposit in northern Sweden. Potential project NPV increased by approximately 30 per cent when using this new approach.Spatial grade uncertainty in mineral resources was identified to be a major risk in underground stope design. The optimisation approach was further extended to account for grade risk using estimated and stochastic simulated resource models. "Mining Companies have producing assets in increasingly diverse portions of the world. It is not uncommon that the owner, the design team, the mine contractors and the operators are all based in different countries. While these assets are always subject to the regulatory requirement of those countries there have not been international standards available to review and evaluate these assets. This becomes particularly important when considering safety critical items such as tailings dams, vertical shaft systems and autonomous vehicles to highlight a few. The work currently being completed in ISO ensures these standards will be available and will be generated by and subscribed to on an international basis, thus removing the potential for patriotic partisanship and ensuring safe and predictable systems are installed. This paper will discuss the benefits of the international standards, the structure of the teams and working groups who are generating these standards as well as the process by which the standards are generated. This will allow insight into the creation of the standard and will aim to demonstrate the “neutral” and technically strong manner in which the generation of these standards is achieved. In addition, the paper will discuss the standards which have been produced in the last five years as well as the current standards which are in place. The finale will discuss upcoming work and the timelines in which it is anticipated these will be completed. The ISO/TC 82 – Mining was founded in 1955. This was an active committee until it was thought that the standards at the time were adequate and the Technical Committee was put on “Care and Maintenance”. In 2012 countries lobbied ISO to pull this committee from dormancy and restart it, this happened in in the same year."

Since the turn of the century the mining industry in the United States has had a number of serious mine explosions, fires and ground fall disasters that have led to a major re-evaluation of mine communication and rescue practices. One of the hindrances of current underground communication technologies is the potential of lost or cut connections when a serious accident, such as an explosion, fire, inundation or major ground fall, takes place. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act)1 mandated that each underground coal mine in the U.S. must provide for two-way wireless, post-accident communications between underground and surface personnel as well as electronic tracking of underground workers One area that has gained renewed attention in the mining sector is Through-The-Earth (TTE) communication. TTE technology has a major advantage in that transceiver devices can be carried by miners and set up quickly during an emergency, since they require no wire connection to the surface. TTE technology uses ultra-low frequency (1 to 4 kHz) electromagnetic waves, requiring relatively large wire loop antennas and highly sensitive receivers. The signal bandwidth is narrow and the permissible antenna currents in coal mines are restricted, which has led to limited usability of TTE technology in the past, as evidenced in research studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1970s. Yenchek (2012)2 pointed out that recent advances in receiver and signal processing technology have enabled voice and text communication capabilities and much improved sensitivity that offers new possibilities for TTE communication in mining applications. One company that has been developing such technology is Vital Alert Communication Inc. Vital Alert has been providing TTE communications since 2003 with a growing focus on emergency response and portable systems. The company?s Canary® Go System is one such product that looks to provide reliable communication capabilities in a portable, user friendly unit that can be utilized both for normal operation and mine rescue scenarios. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) have tested the Canary Go TTE communications system in the CSM Edgar Experimental Mine to determine signal propagation distances, signal quality and aspects of practical application.

Preconcentration, through gravity separation (Wallace et al, 2015), magnetic separation and particle size (Clout, 2013), has been used in many historical projects to convert low grade material into ore. More recently, pre-concentration technologies such as bulk sorting (Kurth, 2017), screening (Bearman, 2014) and coarse particle flotation (Vollert et al, 2019) have also demonstrated their ability to progressively reject waste through the value chain. These technologies can not only deliver stepchange improvements to the economics of mining operations, but can transform the environmental and social aspects by minimising water and energy consumption and significantly reduce the quantity of fine tailings produced. However, implementing progressive waste rejection requires technologies and approaches to be combined and applied in the right way to capture the value. From a technical perspective, progressive waste rejection introduces challenges related to the orebody, equipment performance, engineering and understanding the value chain from the resource through to final product. From a management perspective, the key issues are related to people and processes, in particular; motivating the business, challenging the paradigms, and introducing new ways of operating within the constraint of existing management structures to manage risks and minimise lost opportunity costs. This combination of technical and management issues means that progressive waste rejection is a complex undertaking for mining companies, yet the reward for the business and other stakeholders is potentially high and should not be ignored. This paper presents how progressive waste rejection can offer step-change improvements to the business case for high and low grade greenfield and brownfield projects based on case studies completed by Ausenco. The paper then outlines different implementation approaches from concept studies to execution to address the various technical and management challenges outlined above.

"IntroductionSafety and training in the mineral industry will always be issues that are hotly debated and discussed.The nature of the mining industry, where people and equipment work in close quarters deep below the earth's surface, attracts a great deal of public attention and concern, especially in the areas of safety and related training activities. This concern has been carried over into the mineral processingsector which is, of course, a vital part of the mining industry.It is therefore imperative that mining people closely examine the policies, procedures and programs presently in place to determine if they meet the needs of the industry and its employees. Everyone stands to benefit: the companies, employees and the mineral industry as an important segment of the Canadian economy.Phrases such as ""Safety First"", ""Safety is Number One"", have a role to play in industrial safety programs but in reality are a shallow approach to the magnitude of the challenge. An industry must produce its products in a cost-effective way, with good employee relations. None of these objectives can be successfully achieved unless accompanied by good safety performance. Accidents both on and off the job result in very poor efficiency, high costs and poor employee relations.This chapter, Safety and Training, outlines those major areas that the author believes are necessary components for an industrial safety, health and training program, but are not all inclusive. More will surely be added as additional problem areas requiring attention are identified. The major sections discussed are: Development and Implementation of a Safety Program; Occupational Health; Training; and Audit Procedures.The author has drawn on his experience as both a mill superintendent, mine manager and superintendent of safety, health and training. The approach developed at loco Metals Manitoba Division is frequently used in this paper with examples and excerpts to better illustrate the subject, but does not represent the full scope of programs in place in the Division."

It is evident from most admired companies, globally, that they drive key priorities such as teamwork, customer focus, fair treatment of employees, initiative and innovation into their organisations. It is clearly proofed in all the research that the role of the human factor, and therefore human behaviour, is pivotal to companies striving to accomplish goals such as competitiveness, customer delight, high quality, growing productivity as well as a safety-committed work force. The challenge of leadership is to change the worker’s poor perception of safety to an excited, empowered, valued employee who is continuously committed to the achievement of high levels of health, safety and conformance – the challenge therefore is to transform from within. Any work force needs a set of behavioural rules which work for it – including safety rules and critical safety behaviours, which are accepted through involvement leadership, encouragement and support.

In the face of a highly competitive iron ore market, the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. developed a process now being practiced at the company's Republic mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. By this process, a specular hematite crude ore is being beneficiated to produce a high iron-low silica concentrate with a suitable size structure for the production of a high quality pellet. This process involves crushing, primary grinding and primary flotation, followed by regrinding, heating and refloating the primary flotation concentrate. The ores consist predominantly of specular hematite with relatively minor amounts of magnetite and martite in a recrystallized chert gangue. A wide variety of silicates have been identified, particularly in association with intrusives of various description. The more abundant of these are sericite, talc, grunerite and chlorite with some carbonates, primarily calcite.
