Coal, as one of the vital sources of energy in China, has raised widespread concerns regarding its safety issues amidst the country’s economic growth driven by coal. To address this concern, this study employed the Kuznets curve, multiple linear regression, and data envelopment analysis models to investigate the impact of Chinese coal economic development on coal mine deaths from 1992 to 2021. The findings revealed a clear correlation between the Chinese coal economy and coal mine deaths. Specifically, per capita coal output, the death rate per million coal tons, and the death rate per hundred thousand persons exhibited positive, negative, and negative correlations, respectively, with the growth of coal income over the past three decades. Moreover, when the coal workers and coal output factors remained unchanged, the income of coal demonstrated a negative correlation with future changes in coal mine deaths. Notably, with three decades of coal economy development, substantial improvements in coal mine safety have been observed in China. Consequently, this research provides valuable insights for formulating safety measures and policies in coal mines across different economic levels, as well as a useful framework for assessing safety development in the coal industry.

ABSTRACT Diesel-powered loaders are a pillar of modern underground metal mining. As these mines are getting deeper and hotter and the emission regulations stricter, ventilation costs are soaring, affecting production cost. Also, the cost of diesel fuel is expected to rise. These may make the use of diesel engines more problematic. Electric load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are an interesting alternative. This paper compares features and performance of diesel and electric, cable-powered LHDs. It overviews equipment offerings, and compares, analyzes and discusses technical parameters, operational problems and cost issues. The paper gives some conclusions about electric LHD applicability and performance, indicates possible applications, and suggests further research work.

The paper is focused on the optimal selection of grinding medium for a drum mill. The decision-making is based on the fuzzy multiple attribute approach. One way to optimize the grinding process in a tumbling mill is associated with the development and testing a new shape of grinding body. Family of new grinding bodies ? spheroidal tetrahedrons (tetraballpebs) has been manufactured. Two types of spheroidal tetrahedrons and a classical ball (sphere) with one and the same weight are compared. A fuzzy entropy method to calculate the weight of the attributes is suggested. Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Phases of the Ir sub-group are present either as inclusions in or interstitially to chromite and are unaffected by (or only altered in situ during) hydrothermal processes. By contrast, almost all phases of the Pd sub-group are located in a secondary textural setting - in fractures in chromite or between fragments of brecciated chromite. The different settings indicate that the mineralisation episodes were associated with magmatic and hydrothermal stages respectively. The presence of an included Pd-group mineral in a hydrothermally Pd-group mineralised chromitite sample suggests that the hydrothermal Pd-group minerals were at least partly derived by remobilisation from magmatic deposits in the chromitite pod. These observations indicate that Pd-group elements are more mobile than Ir-group elements under hydrothermal conditions and point to the potential for hydrothermal platinum and palladium mineralisation in favourable environments

"Asbestos" is a name applied to a group of naturally fibrous minerals. Because it has the fibrous characteristics of silk or cotton and at the same time will not burn and has other advantageous properties as well, asbestos has specialized uses for which no adequate substitutes are yet available. Asbestos furnishes a major raw material for a great variety of essential products, the manufacture of which constitutes a vast industry. Asbestos generally occurs in irregular veins scattered throughout rock masses. Most of the fiber-bearing rock is mined in huge open-pit or underground workings. The fibers are separated from the rock and sorted into groups, according to length, in large, complex mills. The longer fibers are stripped to textile plants, where they are further fiberized and prepared in special machines and are used for spinning into yarn and weaving into unburnable cloth that has many important uses. The shorter fibers, which are much more abundant than the long ones, are used in asbestos-cement building materials in heat-insulating products and for a multitude of other applications. These processes and uses are covered in considerable detail in later sections of this report.

Most blasting techniques that are designed to improve fragmentation and subsequently improve ore work index to downstream comminution processes, apply powder or energy factor increases, either by stretching the drilling pattern (burden/spacing ratio) implementing faster initiation sequences or using more energetic explosives. The new application will move detonation parameters up, making the blasting process riskier for the surrounding boreholes, explosive column or initiation systems functioning.

One common public perception of mining is that financially it is an extraordinarily risky business. Another and contrary view, in certain circles, is that price risk and other financial risks can be relatively easily removed or shifted by a number of schemes or devices. In reality, beyond the orebody discovery stage, mining need not be any more risky than most heavy industrial businesses. Nevertheless, as stated by Rappaport, (1986): Risk is a parameter of central importance in establishing the economic value of any asset. The level of risk is determined both by the nature of the firm's operations and by the relative proportions of debt and equity used to finance its investments. These two types of risk are commonly referred to as 'business risk' and 'financial risk' respectively. The term financial risk is used somewhat more loosely herein to recognise the reality that any risk inadequately addressed in the design, construction and operation of a mining project can have significant financial consequences; usually negative. For instance, a specific area of business risk in mining is often called technical risk which definitely has severe financial consequences if not managed correctly. The various risk shifting, hedging and risk management tools available all have their place and range from merely useful to almost indispensable. However, in the long-term, financial risks are maintained at acceptable levels by the application of sound, more fundamental business management principles. There are many with a vested interest in perpetuating a perception that the conceptual foundations of sound management practice are extremely complex. In reality, most management concepts are prosaic, but their application requires incredible discipline and hard work. There is no magic formula or 'silver bullet'. It appears that a company whose activities are restricted to mining can analyse the range of risks specific to mine development and operations more clearly than companies in which mining is just one of many businesses. The almost universal failure of large oil companies in the mining business is probably the best example of lack of any clear comprehension of fundamental business characteristics and risks. Conversely, in regard to risk management, choosing to be in other business as well as mining does nothing to reduce the risks of the mining business. The individual shareholder can probably make such 'diversification of portfolio' decisions better than most management teams. It could be argued that diversification across a number of disparate businesses may actually increase overall corporate risk due to lack of management concentration and focus. These differences between the perceptions of financial risks and the realities in mining need to be further elaborated in relation to some uncompromising business concepts.

Utilization of belt air in underground coal mines has been discussed extensively during the last decade. The Final Report of the Technical Study Panel on the Utilization of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining formed by the Miner Act of 2006 recommends research on leakage, use of booster fans, and escapeway safety. This paper discusses the role of ventilation modeling in evaluating primary escapeway pressurization in a three-entry development system to improve emergency escape in a coal mine using belt air. The intake entry of the NIOSH Bruceton Experimental Mine was pressurized using a 1.1 m (42 in) diameter, 37 kW (50 hp) fan. The work details air movement in the simulated three-entry system and the resulting leakage patterns. Three mine ventilation software packages were compared to analyze their performance in predicting the airflows and leakage conditions with different fan settings. NIOSH researchers found that the measurement results correlated well with the results of modeling.

INTRODUCTION A program to insure adequate talent for development and management of our mineral resources entails two equally important and interrelated aspects: 1) attracting and retaining promising student talent, and 2) providing a first-rate education for those entering careers in mineral science and engineering. Manpower shortages have eased in many areas of engineering, particularly in those areas dependent directly or indirectly upon government contracts in space and war programs. However, in the minerals industry the needs still remain critical. As increasing concern over preservation of the environment has developed, the political and social reaction was to seek out major offenders, to look for "whipping boys" -- and the mineral industry was, and had been, an offender. It was there for everyone to take pictures, it couldn't be covered up, and the Department of the Interior lashed away in the beautiful and popular brochures: Quest for Quality, The Third Wave, The Population Challenge, and Surface Mining and Our Environment (Ravaged Land). The Sierra Club, the Field and Stream magazine, TV, and daily news media added their lashes. In the minds of our social-conscious youth the mineral industry took on the image of "exploiters" of natural resources; "polluters" of streams, lakes, and the atmosphere; "despoilers" of wilderness areas and scenic beauty -- a plague to combat, rather than an exciting challenge that entailed exploration of the remote, conquering of the primitive, and developing of the undeveloped. Enrollments declined and many traditional mineral engineering curricula were abolished or Integrated into other stronger engineering departments to meet student-faculty ratio requirements.

I WISH to urge on this Committee the task of evaluating mining geology. -My motive is as follows: It, is a. duty of the Institute from time to5 time, to establish the social perspective of the professions grouped within it, not simply to promote their use, but to determine with engineering definiteness their true powers and functions. This becomes the delegated duty, therefore, of this committee in respect to geology. Be- cause my own subject is mining, I shall confine my remarks to mining geology. But I believe that the evaluation should be made to include all of that geology termed economic. The perspective for such evaluation is shown in the nature of the public support given to geology. The federal Geological Survey, the leading organization on the economic side, is actuated by the zeal of a small group of devoted professionals who consider its work valuable, ' It proceeds, however, on a starvation ration of appropriations, and that implies that neither the corporations, the voters nor the vote getters consider it important. Altogether, in' the public consciousness, geology is negligible. That, at the same moment, .the profession should act with full confidence, while everyone else should act' with opposite motives, is not fitting. For us, as a committee, to remain incurious regarding such a disparity of beliefs is quite impossible.

The principles of three-dimensional geological modelling are well understood and routinely used. Sample data is collated and geostatistical tools used to ensure that sample data is suitable for its end use, which is typically a block model that is appropriate for mine planning. What has become increasingly apparent is that physical rock properties and geotechnical parameters need to be incorporated into the three-dimensional geological model to create an integrated mine model.The approach to the collection of geotechnical information is not as highly prescribed and controlled as collection of geological data. Commonly, the geotechnical data set is incomplete and inconsistent, with little consideration of what the end use will be by those collecting the data, or how the geotechnical data might relate to the geological data. In some cases, specific geotechnical investigation programs are completed, yet correlation between those programs and previously collected data is rarely undertaken to the same level of diligence as found in the geology field.There are some obstacles that need to be considered when attempting to incorporate geological parameters, such as grade, lithology, and geological domains with geotechnical information such as rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass rating (RMR), rock strength, and geotechnical domains into the same three-dimensional block model. Interpolation or geostatistical estimation methods used for grade estimates might not be appropriate for many components in rock characterisation, particularly search geometries. A number of examples are provided to illustrate issues underlying some of the data collection procedures, and their effects on three-dimensional geotechnical modelling.The example presented attempts to highlight generally observed shortcomings in the collection of geotechnical information, parameters which need to be considered when combining geological and geotechnical data into the same model, and the benefits of having a combined block model from the beginning of a project.CITATION:Zunica, K and Penney, A R, 2014. The concept for a Mine Escape Vehicle (MEV) is motivated by the desire to enable personnel to evacuate a mine rapidly as the first and most desirable response to any underground emergency. Under a NIOSH contract, Raytheon UTD developed a conceptual design for a vehicle that coal miners could use to facilitate their rapid exit from an underground coal mine in the case of emergency, including fire or explosion. The vehicle requirements include the capacity to provide life support functions for a number of miners, operate in an oxygen deficient, low or no visibility atmosphere, and travel at speeds faster than miners can walk out of the mine. To develop the MEV concept, three primary tasks were identified and executed. The first task focused on developing a realistic concept of operations (CONOPS) and associated high level vehicle requirements. The second task identified and evaluated currently available equipment and technologies that could be applied to address the CONOPS. The final task developed a design concept that integrated the identified components for the five (5) MEV sub-systems to provide the foundation for future detailed engineering design and prototype construction. The resulting MEV design concept is centered upon retrofitting existing mine personnel carrier chasses with available, mine-worthy equipment capable of addressing the MEV requirements. This approach offers a practical and economic avenue to prototype development and delivery with minimum lead-time and risk. Furthermore, by integrating familiar and available equipment into the design and CONOPS, the resulting Mine Escape Vehicles should also be more readily accepted by the mining industry.

The face area of a continuous mining section of an underground coal mine is the most dangerous area in the mine. Workers there are at nearly twice the risk of death or disabling injury than those in other parts of the mine. Despite extensive training of miners and improved equipment and mining methods, fatality and injury rates have remained constant during the past few years. It is clear that advanced research is necessary to apply new technologies or modify work procedures to solve the continuing problem of the loss of lives and the numerous injuries at the mine face. A U.S. Bureau of Mines research program is developing a Reduced-Exposure Mining System (REMS) that relocates personnel operating the mining machinery at the face away from the hazards to a nearby haven of relative safety. REMS uses proven technologies of computer automation and robotics to help control the operation of the mining machines at the face, while personnel are moved away to a nearby, safe control room. In this protected, well-ventilated environment, they can supervise or control the operation of the machines while viewing what the machine is doing using video and graphic display monitors.

IMFA Group is the largest producer of Charge chrome not only in India but also in Asia. This Group has plants situated at Therubali and at Choudwar. They also have a Thermal power plant at Choudwar which not only caters to the power requirement of Choudwar plant but also supplies power to Therubali. The plants are fed for Chromite ore through the captive mines namely Nuasahi Chromite mines (40.47 Ha) , Bangur Chromite mines(37.34Ha), Sukinda chromite mines (116.76 Ha), Mahagiri Chromite Mine(73.777 Ha) and Chingudipal Chromite mines (26.62 Ha). Nuasahi Chromite Mine, which is situated in Keonjhar district, is an underground mine and is based upon best technological advancements in the industry. The underground mining operation is certified under ISO-9002, ISO-14001and OHSAS 18001. This not only shows the concern for the quality, environment but also for the health of the employees. The Nuashahi is the first chromite mine to backfill the opencast excavations created during the last 50 years and carry out the production from underground area below the opencast workings. This paper deals with the state of art technology of sub-level open stopping in thin ore bodies. The under-ground mine openings was started in the year 1997. In next four years the production of chromite from underground was started.(2001). At present the mine is in a good shape with several running stopes. Today it is producing around 10,000 Mt per month of chromite. The development of the mine is carried out with an average of 200 mtr per month of tunneling. The mine is having a mechanical ventilator having a capacity of24000 M3 per hour at 50mm water gauge, thus feeding sufficient air for the persons working in underground. The mine is being dewatered through a most modern positive suction sump, having a capacity of 500 cum and operated with 120 HP pumps. After commissioning of this sump in the year 2003, the mine has taken a quantum jump in production with remarkable saving in power consumption.

As high-quality mineral deposits are thoroughly exploited, mines of the future will have to move towards more remote and lower quality projects. With these projects comes an increased business risk to the operator. Even now, mining companies often turn to foreign countries for new deposits to produce, introducing the concept of country risk into their portfolio. Furthermore, feasibility studies often fail to accurately quantify the risks associated with various projects, and as such, this study proposes a technique of risk quantification which can both aid mining companies to evaluate the viability of investment and assist in risk disclosure to public investors for the mining industry of the future. This paper aims to quantify the effects of country risk on the valuation of potential mining projects, using a combination of modular and risk-weighting techniques to evaluate the country risk premium (CRP) required to obtain capital for operation of risky foreign mining projects. The techniques proposed in this paper are demonstrated using fictional examples and then evaluated for accuracy against a recently developed debt-funded precious metal project in a country in the Americas.

Late in 1974 at a meeting with the Cedar Coal Company in Chelyan, West Virginia, a very definite requirement for an automatic heat sensing fire suppression system for the type coal augers used in their mine was revealed. Several fires had been experienced, and while equipment loss was a consideration, operator safety was also a concern. As of that date no one had developed an automatic system specifically for fire suppression on coal augers. II. EQUIPMENT DEVELOPMENT As a result of the above meeting, an unsolicited proposal was made to the Bureau on March 1, 1975, and a contract was issued to provide the following services: A. Determine and define fire hazard problem on Compton Coal Auger. B. Modify or otherwise mike a Lease "AFEX" system suitable for protecting the fire hazard area developed in paragraph "A". C. Make installation of "AFEX" system. D. Monitor installation for reliability for a period of 90 days after installation. C. ConJurt a simulated fire test to determine effectiveness on system.

"The profitability of mining and metallurgical operations continues to lag behind that of other industries despite the technical advances that have occurred in recent years. A primary reason for poor performing in this economic sector is the lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information. The mine cut-off grade can be optimized if mining and metallurgical engineers have the data to optimize milling for the type of ore in hand.Integration of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays is the key to determining the economics for each blast strategy in a mining site. Real-time information from manufacturing assets greatly affects the profitability and flexibility of a company, but gross errors from faulty sensors, inaccurate instrument calibration, or incorrect process models may corrupt actionable information. New software tools can model the process, sift through available data to identify and eliminate gross errors, and use statistical data reconciliation to create materially balanced and consistent readings. The reconciled data is unified for use by both monitoring and decision making processes.Creating a real-time information environment where upgrade and change are allowed is becoming an accepted methodology to accelerate and simplify the integration of applications such as production monitoring, equipment performance management and yield and inventory management."

"Following a brief explanation of the land arrangements under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, this paper will examine both a mineral exploration agreement and a mining development agreement negotiated between two large mining companies and two different Alaska Native institutions. One of the institutions is a village corporation involved with an exploration agreement and the other is one of the Alaska Native regional corporations, which is party to a mining and development agreement with Cominco Alaska for the development of the Red Dog lead and zinc mine.Special attention will be given to the factors to be considered when dealing with small aboriginal owners with few resources in the context of an exploration agreement, including development issues which must be considered early in the process. The paper will also discuss the unique royalty and taxation structures developed for the Red Dog Mine Agreement as well as environmental issues. Owing mainly to the use of ethylene dibromide in the production of tetraethyl lead for gasoline treatment, there has been a tremendous increase during the past decade in the demand for bromine. In the United States, production, derived mainly as a by-product from the treatment of brines from salt wells, rose steadily from about two million pounds in 1924 to nine million pounds in 1931. In 1936, production amounted to between 20 and 21 million pounds. Much of the increase during the past four or five years has been due to the operation of the Ethyl-Dow Chemical Company's plant, which extracts bromine directly from sea water. The process employed by the Ethyl-Dow Company is somewhat similar to that in use on salt-well brines at their plant at Midland, Michigan, but whereas these brines contain around 1,300 parts per million bromine, sea water contains only 65 to 70 p.p.m.-about as much as the waste effluent in the brine process. By intensive research, however, a process was developed whereby a very considerable percentage of the bromine content of sea water could be recovered, and at a satisfactory operating cost. In its essentials, the process consists in liberating the bromine from the sea water by treat-ment with chlorine, blowing the bromine out of the water by a current of air, and finally absorbing it in a solution of soda-ash.
