The degree of injury and days lost from work due to an injury are examined for selected electrical sources, occurring in conjunction with falls of the injured miner or with selected machinery, that could have been eliminated by use of diesel equipment. Although the number of electrical source injuries that could have been prevented is small relative to the total number of injuries during the period examined, many lost-time injuries could have been precluded and thousands of days lost from work could have been avoided.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). Plasma-induced damage of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well (MQW) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has been studied in terms of forward turn-on and reverse breakdown voltages, together with etch rate and surface morphology. The physical degradation of sidewall along with rough surface morphology of n-GaN caused by increased ion scattering induced the deterioration of the forward and reverse voltages. It was found that the turn-on voltage is sensitive to the surface roughness of the etched n-GaN and the breakdown voltage is strongly affected by the sidewall contamination. Annealing under nitrogen after the mesa etching improved the electrical properties of the InGaN/GaN MQW LEOs. Efficient blue light-emitting diodes (LEOs) were fabricated using InGaN/GaN triangular MQWs. The LEOs with triangular QWs showed a lower operation voltage and 2.4 times higher light output power than those with the rectangular MQW LEOs at 20 rnA and 20 "C. The intensity of electroluminescence (EL) at 20 mA was almost independent of ambient temperature in the triangular QW LEO, but decreased substantially in the rectangular one.

INTRODUCTION The Magma mine, located at Superior, AZ, some 100 km (60 miles) east of Phoenix, was discovered in 1875, and was originally mined for silver. The property was acquired by W. B. Thompson who formed the Magma Copper Co. in 1910. Prior to 1965, square-set mining and cut-and-fill methods were used to mine steeply dipping veins at Magma. Ore was moved to the chute by gravity in the square-set stopes and by slusher in the cut-and-fill stopes. The stopes were gobbed with waste from the surface and development headings in the mine. The original square-set method of mining was modi¬fied in order to extract replacement ore bodies in limestones that dipped at 0.52 rad (30°) and varied in thick¬ness from 4.6 to 38 m (15 to 125 ft). Mining of these ore bodies was done by starting at the upper lateral ex¬tremities and retreating to the access openings. The timber square sets and cribbing were used as temporary support, the ground being allowed to cave as the mining retreated. It was found, however, that mining in such a manner was very inefficient; safety hazards increased be¬cause of the blocky and fractured characteristics of the ore and the weakness of the hanging wall. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining is now the primary stoping method used at Magma, and no pillars are left for later extraction. Four ore bodies are pres¬ently being mined. These ore bodies (see Fig. 1) dip conformably at 0.52 rad (30°) to the east with the host limestone and shale sediments, their average strike length is about 122 m (400 ft), and their thickness varies from 9 to 38 m (30 to 125 ft). The ore bodies are separated by varying thicknesses of barren rock. Three of them come together at various elevations primarily in the area of the main feeder fault, but there is an apparent horizontal displacement of about 23 m (75 ft) on the main feeder fault which complicates stope layout. The method as originally applied has been modified in order to mine more efficiently ore bodies that are 9 m (30 ft) or more in thickness. The modification was made to mine all the ore at a given elevation before dropping down for the cut below. The advantage of this is that mining is done on a horizontal plane and there¬fore muck removal can be mechanized. Also multiple faces are made available, thereby improving overall min¬ing efficiency. Another major change made was to carry a 6.7-m (22-ft) face when mining the top sill and a 6.4-m (21-ft) face when mining under fill rather than the former standard 3.35-m (11-ft) high face. This change lengthens the mining cycle and cuts mat prepa¬ration costs in half. Stopes are laid out (see Fig. 2) so that maximum mining panels are available and yet one stope crew will not tie up too much of the ore reserve. One stope might consist of as many as 20 panels, and these panels are divided evenly on opposite sides of the extraction cross¬cut. The stope layout is planned so that the maximum tramming distance to the orepass will not exceed 30.5 m (100 ft) on the crosscut and 38 m (125 ft) in the panel. The details of a three-phase study (total time period of 12 months) entitled ?Fire Alert Systems for Metal and Non-Metal Mines,? are presented. Phase 1 consists of a state of the art survey on fire detection devices and gas sensing techniques. Phases 2 and 3 include laboratory screening and systems concepts testing on various detectors classified as products of combustion, optical view-field and contact (or thermal) types under incipient and flaming combustion conditions. Recommendations for a mine fire detection system to protect shaft, sealed off or mined out (from spontaneous combustion of sulfide containing ores and cellulosic materials), and fuel storage areas are also included. me principal problem area noted during Phase 1 study is the high expected occurrence of false alarming of products of combustion detectors (POC") subjected to normal mining operations---diesel vehicles and equipment and shot firing or blasting operations. Simultaneous gas sensing of either the ratio of CO/NOx or CO2/NOx with detection of one or more fire signatures (smoke, radiant energy, or heat sensing) is the recommended approach to discriminate against these operations.

THE WILLISTON basin is the largest known sedimentary basin on the North. American continent. Two-thirds of this large basin lies within the United States in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Less than 10 years after the first commercial oil discovery in North Dakota in 1951, the petroleum became one of the largest industries in the three-state area. Crude petroleum is now the most valuable mineral resource in the area. In 1960, the basin produced 39 million barrels of worth $100 million at the wellhead. Most of the 137 oil pools covered to date are in Paleozoic carbonates at depths ranging from 3,000 to 13,000 feet. The major producing fields, centered on the Cedar Creek anticline in Montana and the Nesson anticline in North Dakota, produce from depths below 6,000 feet. This report presents descriptions of all phases of the Williston basin petroleum industry, including leasing, exploration, geology, drilling, production, transportation, and refining. Engineering, physical, and production data, maps, and crude petroleum analyses for 137 separate oil pools are included.

Zirconium, formerly distinctly a rare element, is rapidly becom- ing of rather extensive commercial importance. Economic features of the zirconium industry, together with general information regarding the metal and its compounds, are discussed in a separate paper, to which this paper is a supplement. In addition to giving a brief discussion of the four or five de- posits that so far have proved to be commercial sources of the element, this circular summarizes available data (including some hitherto unpub lished material from the files of the Bureau of Mines) upon other occur- rences, including many of scientific interest only, of the two commercial. minerals, zircon and baddeleyite, and also data upon some of the minor minerals, such as eudyalite and cyrtolite, which have attracted addition- al interest in recent years because they are frequently richer in hafnium than the more common zirconium minerals.

The Mi Vida mine , Big Indian district , San Juan County , Utah , is in an ore deposit of uranium and vanadium minerals disseminated in certain sedimentary beds of the Triassic Chinle formation . Statistical analysis of assays of samples taken from the ore body affords an estimate of the grade of the ore body and provides a prediction about the direction of best mineralization beyond the sampled area . The basic data analyzed are assay results for uranium ( Uз Og ) , vanadium (V₂O ) , and lime (CaO ) from 225 channel samples cut at 79 sample points . Through the use of appropriate statistical methods , particularly regression analysis , the grade of ore may be estimated more precisely than by conventional means , and the most favorable direction to extend the mine may be predicted . Frequency distributions of assay residuals for uranium , vanadium , and lime are compared to frequency distributions of assays without regard to trend . Correlations among these variables are obtained and interpreted . The statistical methods employed illustrate certain techniques that may be used to analyze assay data from ore deposits in general .

Mine maintenance planning, scheduling and daily workflow communications are crucial elements for enhancing overall efficiency and reducing costs. Equally important, it helps identify time periods that equipment will be unavailable so conflicts with production demands are avoided. The current CMMS Kennecott Energy Corporation (KEC) utilizes does not perform these functions in an effective manner. A solution to this problem was to develop an intuitive web-based maintenance planning, scheduling and work flow system call E-MESA. This paper will discuss the E-MESA'S system structure and advantages and disadvantages of using the web based E-MESA solution to perform the maintenance functions described above.

Silver Bell is located about 56 km (35 miles) northwest of Tucson, AZ. It is a classic porphyry copper deposit containing enriched disseminated chalcocite ore in altered porphyritic rocks with chalcopyrite in adjacent skarn zones. The discovery of Silver Bell was an evolutionary process that occurred over a 75-year period. Recorded mining activity began about 1865 on Boot Hill east of El Tiro pit (see Fig. 1) where outcrops of altered limestones were found to contain 425 to 482 g (15 to 17 oz) Ag mixed with copper oxides. By 1874, the Young America Copper Co. was mining shallow occurrences of 30% Cu along the north side of the present Oxide pit. The ore was shipped by wagon to Yuma, AZ, and then by boat to San Francisco for smelting. By 1881, the district supported several mining companies, two small smelters, and was being favorably compared to Bisbee in local newspapers. Most of the ore mined in the period 1865-1903 came from pods of massive sulfide or their oxidized products which were distributed in an unpredictable fashion through a large skarn zone in Paleozoic limestone east of El Tiro pit. Ore grades varied from 5 to 10% Cu.

Post-mining landscapes are required to geomorphologically and ecologically integrate with their surrounds (Martín Duque et al., 2015). Designing and constructing an erosionally stable landform is the first and arguably most important part of the rehabilitation process. Without an erosionally stable landform topsoil and nutrients are lost, shallow groundwater is depleted as well as when excessive erosion occurs, expose suboptimal materials. Here we examine the ideas of geomorphic design and rehabilitation and how the landform can be tested and enhanced using computer based design and landscape evolution models. Specifically we evaluate the complementary capabilities of landscape modelling (SIBERIA) (Hancock and Willgoose, 2017) and geomorphic design software (Natural Regrade with GeoFluv) (Bugosh et al., 2016), in order to maximise erosional stability on post-mining landscapes (Zapico et al., 2018). This circular is the first of a series of publications describing uranium mining on the Colorado Plateau. Later circulars are planned in which exploration, development, and mining methods and costs will be described after a detailed study of various operations. Because of the introductory character of this paper, those well-publicized phases of the industry such as geography, history, prospecting, and exploration are described but briefly. Primarily, attention has been devoted to the general problems that are encountered in mining ore bodies and to the factors that affect the selection of development and mining methods. Those familiar with mining may class the information contained in this paper as elementary; however, its inclusion is considered necessary for the completeness of the series of papers. It will also serve as a source of information for people who are interested in uranium but are unfamiliar with mining.

Subsequent to the unbundling of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) and the privatization of its constituent parts, the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) represents a third of the original conglomerate. Now run by private hands as a sub group of Vedanta Resources Plc of India, KCM is strategizing on how best to deal with the operational issues of the organisation to resolve some of the difficult, logistical, environmental, mineralogical and metallurgical problems being encountered to tum them into opportunities as the company turns around. This paper reviews the options being put in place to provide appropriate solutions and strategies including the treatment of the highly siliceous low energy copper belt concentrates in its mining operations in Zambia.

This Paper describes a sudden spill of rock waste used for backfilling from a waste pass at one of the underground mine in Canada thus causing a major failure/accident. The mine operator immediately launched a detailed investigation to understand the causes of this accident and develop procedures to prevent any recurrence of such events in future. The investigators from McGill University were invited to collaborate with the engineers at the mine to examine this accident. The events leading to the accident were studied and appropriate measurements were taken and samples of the waste material was collected for further test and analysis. The field visit and the interview of the witnesses allowed a detail documentation of the events. The sequences of events related to the incident together with the experimental results obtained in the course of the investigation is detailed. The waste material was characterised in the laboratory with regard to its behaviour in the presence of water. This information is then discussed and the failure mechanism involved in this accident is identified. The full recommendation as well as the immediate operational measures implemented by the mine to prevent future occurrence of such events are discussed and presented.

The objective of the Cerrejon Coal Project is to mine and export a minimum of 15 million metric tons per year of bituminous coal from the Guajira Pennisula in Colombia, South America. Major components of the project will include an open pit mine, 150 km railroad, marine terminal for storage and shipping, and accommodations for the support personnel. This paper primarily reviews the coal handling facilities at the mine and port which will include crushers, conveyors, silos, stacker/reclaimers, and a shiploader. Of special interest is the design concept for unloading bottom-dump railcars, a programmable controller control system with automatic stacking and reclaiming, a linear-type shiploader, and 2.4m wide conveyors running at 5 m/sec.

Introduction There has been much said recently about the sophistication of Japanese management in turning out reliable, inexpensive products, such as cars and steel. Techniques include consensus management and quality control circles. These have been touted as prime reasons for inexpensive Japanese products. An often neglected, but major factor in the equation of cheap export goods is the role played by Japanese trading companies. These venerable institutions are a vital factor in Japan's overall strategy of keeping the price of raw materials at the absolute lowest levels. This is critical to the country's economy since the nation must import more than 85% of all its coal. A country that is so desperate for imported raw materials would appear, at first glance, to be at the mercy of its suppliers. In Japan's case, however, the opposite is true. With the exception of brief' windows in 1974-75 and 1980-81, Japan has been in the driver's seat in negotiating contract terms. Due to its dominant role in world coal trade, Japan's situation can be described as a de facto monopsony. By definition, a monopsony is a market situation where the product, in this case coal, is offered by many sellers, but is sought by one buyer. This has been due to the role of Japanese trading companies in dealing with suppliers. Table I depicts trading companies by size in 1982. Mitsubishi and Mitsui are overshadowing in terms of size. The others, though less significant, play a vital role in orchestrating the marketplace. Three critical building blocks on which the strategy of the trading companies are based include intelligence networks, exceptional training of company traders, and shrewd contract negotiation practices. Intelligence Networks All success is derived from these three key components. Of the three blocks, intelligence gathering is the most important. With all the sophistication of the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Interpol, and the Surete', the Japanese trading company's method is every bit as competent and far more gentlemanly. Friendly competition is the key to survival. Although one Japanese trading company appears to be in ardent competition with its rival Japanese trading companies, when studied closely, a totally different picture emerges. The end user nominates certain trading companies as market channels and informally guarantees they will receive compensation regardless of which company wins a specific order. With this concept in mind, the pressure is off. The trading company can aim at getting the best price for the end user. Therefore, bargain, beat, and share information. Do whatever is necessary, but get the lowest price for the end user. Even with the game so gentlemanly, no victory could be assured without an adequate intelligence network. Proper intelligence is only as good as the sources drawn from. But how is one assured of getting the right information? The answer is verification. Verification is comprised of numerous independent sources each cross checked at a central processing unit in Tokyo. Each major Japanese trading company receives input, not only from its own trader, but from other trading companies as well. "Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the last decade. Accidents rates are at a “plateau” and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas Refinery disaster, organizations that have “exemplary” safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA’s Challenger and Columbia disasters, the BP’s Deepwater Horizon Rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Looking into the causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization’s mindset, or its culture? What characterizes these organizations’ decision-making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since1995, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions of near zero organizations (NZO) that suffered unexpected disasters, based on extensive research by the author. More recently, the massive West Fertilizer plant explosion in Texas, and the Train Disaster in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, Canada underlined the same trends. Organizations may experience calamities not because they are bad, or unsafe, but because they have become “cult-like”. INTRODUCTION The train disaster of 6 July 2013, in the small town of Lac-Mégantic in Quebec, Canada, in which 47 people were killed, had many strange pre-cursorsso-called “black swan” events that have occurred in many different industries. Black swan events are so rare, that there is almost zero chance that they will ever occur again, but they are so calamitous that the responses to these are emotional and irrational, (but necessary) and in those responses, the seeds for other, different black swan events are put into place. It is not what we don’t do, or do wrong, that causes modern disasters, it is what we do. The same things in the culture that make us successful, may also cause the disasters. We slowly, incrementally and insidiously ‘float’ into disaster. One such Black Swan event: The Piper Alpha Oil Rig disaster, killing 167 men in the North Sea on the 6 September 1988, was one of the most pivotal events in safety around the world. It changed the thinking and focus of governments, whole industries and led to numerous books and papers. It resulted in new legislation, textbooks and a critical self-examination by the oil and gas industry."

This Information Circular describes copper mining and concentrating methods, practices, and costs at the Silver Bell Unit of American Smelting and Refining Co., Pima County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The Silver Bell mining district, one of the older districts in Arizona, is in the western part of the Silver Bell Mountains in Pima County, about 40 miles west of Tucson and about 20 miles southwest of Red Rock, a station on the main line railroad of the Southern Pacific Co. The Oxide and the El Tiro open-pit mines of the American Smelting and Refining Co. are in the district (fig. 1. The principal ore deposits are in T. 12S., R.8E., Gila and Salt River base line, at an altitude of about 3,000 feet. The present town of Silver Bell, established in 1952, is reached by a paved highway, the Avra Valley road, that turns west from Highway 84 at Plata siding near Rillito and extends westward 25 miles to the townsite (fig. 2). The present town is about 5 miles southeast of the old town of Silver Bell that flourished from 1900 to 1930.

This report describes sulfatization of nickeliferous laterites from Puerto Rico and the Philippines for recovery of water-soluble nickel and cobalt sulfates. Temperatures ranging from 665 C to 710 C and a 10-percent sulfur dioxide-air reaction gas were employed during batch-roasting tests and during continuous countercurrent treatment in a 2-inch-diameter shaft furnace. A maximum of 69 percent of the nickel and 76 percent of the cobalt were recovered from one sample of Puerto Rican laterite, and a maximum of 96 percent of the nickel and 91 percent of the cobalt were recovered from the Philippine laterite.
