"Dare-Zereshk deposit is one of the deposits supplies ore for Taft copper Complex in Iran Yazd province. This deposit is situated underneath a village the same name. Prior to mining activities, the village and its agricultural lands should be dislocated and deserted. This paper discusses about sustainability factors in this area including: Social and environmental effects of mining, dislocation and substitution of communities, created and lost jobs, financial and economic factors, quality of life index, infrastructures and post-mining land use. Studies have been performed by coupling Geographical Information System (GIS) with decision support tools such as Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM), Through these studies revealed that considering the infrastructures developed for mine and plants, earned incomes and changing the community, mining activity in this area not only increases the social and regional sustainability but also improves it to a higher level."

This work is focussed on lead decopperising by two techniques: conventional top addition of sulfur and injection of sulfur powder. It is found that the first method proceeds under equilibrium conditions and the second one depends on kinetic considerations. Experiments were carried out using 15 kg lead baths at two temperatures, 340°C and 380°C. The carrying gas used for the injection trials was nitrogen at flow rates of 6.3 and 18.6 L min- 1• The results show that 'decopperising process is more efficient at temperatures close to the melting point of lead for the sulfur top addition process, whereas high temperatures produce better copper removal for the injection of sulfur powder. Besides, the sulfur injection with the higher nitrogen flow rate (18.6 L min-1) produced higher decopperising rates. Thermodynamic and kinetic models are used to simulate this lead refining process.

"The Adanac molybdenum porphyry deposit near Atlin, in northwestern British Columbia, was discovered in 1905. It was explored extensively between 1967 and 1980.The deposit is within a complex, multi-phase, quartz monzonite stock that is a satellite of the post-accretionary, Surprise Lake Batholith. Biotite K-Ar dates range from 703 ± 2.4 Ma to 71.6 ± 2.1 Ma, indicating a Late Cretaceous age of emplacement.The deposit comprises an irregular-shaped ring or halo peripheral to a quartz monzonite porphyry dome, or ""cupola': The shape of the ring, and of a smal~ fine-grained quartz monzonite intrusion, and the presence of higher-grade mineralimtion on the eastern flank of the cupola, suggest partial control by a preminera/ structure. The deposit is truncated by a steep, northwesterly dipping, normal fault (Adera Fault) that down-dropped the northern half of the deposit by a minimum of 100 mThe deposit lacks strong zonal alteration but there are narrow envelopes of potassic alteration around some veins and local zones of intense wall-rock silicification. There is considerable retrograde alteration along postminera/ faults and fractures.Molybdenite occurs in veins and fractures, many of which are relatively flat-lying. They occur in all phases of quartz monzonite. Molybdenum is the only element of economic significance. There are vein and skarn occurrences with tungsten, tin, lead, zinc and precious metals peripheral to the deposit.In 1981, Placer Development Limited reported an ""undiluted mineable mineral reserve"" of 151 971 000 tonnes grading 0.063% Mo at a cutoff grade of 0.04% Mo and a strip ratio of 1.5:1."

Longwalls using shearers in seam heights of less than 1.2 m (48 inches) are relatively rare in the U.S. Westmoreland Coal Company is currently operating a shearer-equipped longwall at a cutting height of 1.17 m (46 inches) in its Bullitt Mine. This face has averaged 2795 metric tons/day of operation since its startup on April 3, 1984. Longwall productivity in thin seams is substantially impacted by equipment reliability and availability of useable working room for travel and access. This paper addresses the design criteria used in selecting this face equipment, with the goal of maximizing these two parameters. Equipment discussed includes shearers. face conveyor, shields, stageloader, and emulsion system.

Autonomous mining systems have been deployed for improving mine performance. However, there is a fear of job losses. Adoption of autonomous systems is envisaged to be resisted by major stakeholders in Ghana due to high illiteracy and unemployment. This paper assesses the preparedness of Ghanaian mining stakeholders for the adoption of autonomous systems to Ghana’s surface mining industry. Closed and open-ended questionnaires were administered to mine stakeholders. Respondents generally expressed unwillingness to accept autonomous systems into Ghanaian mines due to fear of increased unemployment. We propose setting up a mining education fund (MEF) for training stakeholders in autonomous mining systems. INTRODUCTION Mining contributes enormously to the sustenance and growth of global and national economies through the provision of raw materials, employment, revenues and foreign exchange (Carvalho, 2017; ICMM, 2017; Cordes et al., 2016; Solomon et al., 2008; Walser, 2000). The International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM, 2014) reported that globally, formal mining employs approximately 2.5 million people. Many resource-rich countries, especially the developing ones, have experienced strong socioeconomic growth propelled by the discovery and extraction of valuable minerals. McMahon and Moreira (2014) reported a positive linkage between mining and sustainable development. They revealed that averagely, resource-rich countries have improved Human Development Index (HDI) scores than countries without mineral resources. Mining remains a crucial industry in Ghana’s economic development (Bermúdez-Lugo, 2016; Amponsah-Tawiah and Dartey-Baah, 2011). Over the years, mining has contributed significantly to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Ghana. In 2013, mining accounted for 1.7% of Ghana’s GDP and about 19% of government revenues (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2015). The Ghana Chamber of Mines also reported that mining contributed over 50% of foreign direct investment, 37% of export earnings and 1.1% of direct employment revenues. The US Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that 65% of coal, 92% of metals and 96% of industrial minerals are mined using surface mining methods (DOE, 2007). Generally, mining is a capital-intensive venture, with high operating cost, hence there is a constant demand for mining companies to seek efficient cost reduction and production maximization strategies. One strategy being pursued keenly is automation, which is noted to improve productivity, and worker safety at minimal cost. According to Parreira (2013), mining automation involves direct teleoperation whereby workers remotely control the mining process using computers from a control room.

A pilot scale process has been developed to separate mercury, tin, silver, and copper from dental amalgam scrap. Laboratory research led to a process which was operated in 55 gallon drum sized reactors to treat 2000 Tr oz charges of scrap per day. This paper discusses the development work, presents a flowsheet and gives an indication of the equipment necessary to carry out the process on a commercial scale.

The influence of mining on the hydro-geomechanical environment is greatly constrained by alternating mining geometries. The limiting magnitudes of surface subsidence and groundwater flow over the mining area, as a result of geometry changes, can be reasonably predicted through a coupled finite-element model introduced in this paper. Verification of the model has been tested using real and conceptual case studies which reveal that changes in strata conductivities are strongly related to the strata deformation induced by mining. The greatest modification of hydraulic conductivities occurs within the caving or severely fractured zones. The study indicates that narrowing the panel face width will substantially reduce both the intensity and extent of mining damage to the overlying strata, limit surface subsidence and constrain the change in hydraulic conductivity to a reduced scale and smaller extent, particularly as mining depth increases.

Rapid growth and acceptance of engineered materials have changed the way we live. We have come to expect improved performance at less cost. At the same time, our awareness of societal and environmental issues created by these materials during and after their lifetime has been heightened. As a result, material lifecycle analysis is receiving considerable attention. Material lifecycle analysis evaluates the cost/effective tradeoffs at each stage of a material's life: feedstock, fabrication, performance, recycle, and disposal. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigates a material's lifecycle using technical cost models augmented with decision and impact analyses. Results of these studies are useful in gaining a better understanding of current material selections and illustrating the multifaceted issues associated with engineered materials in today's society.

Geometallurgical characterisation of ore deposits is accepted practice in some parts of the mining industry today. Its primary aim is to provide constrained inputs that reflect inherent geological variability and its impact on metallurgical performance for the deposit. Geometallurgy improves project value because it suggests more valuable alternatives for scheduling and processing through an increased knowledge and understanding of the interactions of rock properties and extractive technologies. Lower project cost (both capital and processing) and improved recoveries are the result from closer tailoring of the mining and mineral processing strategies to the characteristics of the resource (Dunham, Vann and Coward, 2011). Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be seen as potential resources and it is argued that fundamental geometallurgical characterisation as applied in ore deposit characterisation should also be applied to planning the retreatment of TSFs. This paper will describe a research project at Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Resource Centre assessing if geometallurgical principles and methodologies can successfully be applied to TSFs as they have been to primary deposits. The project is establishing a new standard method of tailings evaluation which will include a 3D spatial model of the tailings resource. Initial domaining of the TSFs was done using principal component analysis followed by k-means cluster analysis based on chemical assays from drill core samples. The subsequent characterisation of the drill core samples has involved chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical profiling, with a range of metallurgical tests being conducted on the samples. This characterisation step is followed by class-based analysis, predictive modelling and process performance domaining with the ultimate objective of establishing a 3D spatial model incorporating geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical performance data. This approach, which takes into account processing performance permits a more realistic (as compared to doing limited chemical assays and metallurgical testing) economic evaluation of the potential of reprocessing the tailings material. It is believed that the approach is generic and can be applied to other TSFs being considered for reprocessing. Approximately 42 t of mercury were produced from Puhipuhi from the late nineteenth century until the end of World War II, with no significant gold or silver production. Sinter, eruption breccias and veins, mined for mercury at Puhipuhi and essentially barren of gold, are inferred in many geological models to represent the surficial levels of adularia-sericite style low sulfidation gold-silver systems. These systems may contain economic gold-silver mineralisation at depth. Conceptual geological models have been employed at Puhipuhi in the search for buried gold mineralisation. Homestake Mining utilised a McLaughlin model for exploration from 1982 to 1987, targeting mainly the vicinity of the sinter deposits. From 1987 to 1989 BHP sought deeper structurally controlled gold mineralisation within the basement greywackes, utilising models derived from studies of Round Mountain, USA and Hishikari, Japan. Macraes Mining Company Limited have accessed the previous work and applied a conceptual geological which invokes a north-south structural control for the emplacement of high-level felsic intrusions at depth. Dextral movement on these structures associated with oblique convergence facilitated the formation of a pull-apart basin in which lacustrine sediments overlie basement greywackes and are in tum overlain by Pliocene basalts. Continued activation of the NS structures created a series of inferred NE-trending dilational structures, which are targeted as fluid upflow centres for the surficial outflows. Upflows occur as eruption breccias (e.g., Plumduff) and outflow as silica sinters (eg Mt Mitchell, Williams) which are also partly obscured by the basalt cover. Argillic alteration and mercury mineralisation occur at elevated crustal levels (eg Puhipuhi mine). Modelling from structure and alteration zonations have targeted a fluid upflow in the vicinity of Bush Hill, which was not accessed by previous workers. This target was subsequently supported by surface geology and multi-element soil geochemistry.

Nowadays, technology has improved to extract dimensional stone blocks at quarry sites and also to process these at processing plants for making slabs and tiles. In the process of quarrying and processing, performance evaluation of machinery is very important to achieve optimum output at minimum cost with improved technology. Cost analysis of improved technology includes parameters such as manpower, energy consumption, tool consumption, depreciation, maintenance and also others. The chainsaw machine with long boom and rail in marble quarries and multi-diamond wire saw machine for slab making from granite blocks at processing plants have recently been introduced in India. Thus, a study was carried out under a research project on these machines to assess their suitability. In this paper, performance evaluation and cost analysis of chainsaw and multi-diamond wire saw have been carried out with existing machines on the basis of research findings.

"Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce risks of coal dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this NIOSH study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust (<75 µm diameter) in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity. Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing, and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle is operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings can be used to select sprays and design spray arrays to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. INTRODUCTION Coal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 microns in diameter, are deposited in return entries of coal mines and can be re-entrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; NIOSH, 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (CFR, 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal dust-fueled explosions. Water sprays are both effective and widely accepted as a method for controlling underground coal mine dust. In fact, water sprays are considered to be the most economical and technically feasible means of reducing dust concentrations in underground coal mines (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Barker and Humphreys, 1996). Sprays are used in several ways to control dust in mining processes: inhibiting dust formation, immobilizing dust to prevent it from becoming airborne, and capturing airborne dust (Cheng, 1973). Reductions in airborne dust concentrations have frequently been attributed to inertial impaction between water droplets and dust particles, forming larger agglomerates which then quickly precipitate out of the airstream (McPherson, 1993). Inertial impaction activity is generally accepted as the major capture mechanism for airborne particles larger than 0.5 µm in diameter. It is this mechanism that is evaluated in this study."

In the mining industry, as in other business, one of the more satisfactory results of sincere but cheerful effort lies in the proper completion of undertakings and problems, which, to be successful, must continually hold the interest of all concerned in the work. In most undertakings, genuine interest and satisfaction is largely dependent on the proper appraisal of opportunities presented, and the opportunity to associate ourselves with sinking operations at McIntyre central shaft, from the surface to a depth of 4,133 feet, was genuinely appreciated. This opportunity was made possible by the previous persistent and successful leadership of Mr. J. P. Bickell, President, with the assistance of his associates, and of the general manager, Mr. R.J. Ennis, in the development of the McIntyre Porcupine mine, and I beg to state that any success in this sinking operation was very largely due to the congenial co-operation and splendid workmanship of Captain Martin C. Horne, his shift bosses, leaders, and all those who worked with us . Our slogan throughout was " Safety First for Pleasant and Efficient Workmanship," and this general policy made it possible to sink and timber 2.,123 feet during the first year without a serious accident.

"The Copper King copper-gold-silver deposit was discovered about 1880. Various individuals and companies have been interested in the deposit and considerable work has been done, although production, if any, has been small. The deposit is located in the western part of Laramie County Wyo., and is favorably nituated with respect to rail and truck transportation and high-tension power facilities.Mild summers and cold winters characterize the climate. Precipitation averages between 16 and 17 inches annually, with considerable snowfall in the winter. Permanent streams are small and most available water in being stored for use by Cheyenne, Wyo. Range grasses comprise the bulk of the vegetation, with small treed and shrubs common in the most rugged areas.The deposits lie upon land owned by Wyoming, now leased by a group of Wyoming and Colorado businessman constituting the Copper King Mining Co.Primary copper-gold mineralization seems largely confined to an equigranular, relatively fine grained gneiss that is part of a pre-Cambrian complex of metamorphic rocks ranging from schists to pegmatites. The copper minerals are oxidized to a depth of from 100 to 150 feet, with the occasional occurrence of secondary minerals at greater depths. The copper minerals chalcopyrite, malachite, chalcocite, bornite, cuprite(?), and some native copper were observed in Le deposit.In addition to the 4,030 feet of diamond-core drilling in 11 holes done on the deposit by private companies, the Bureau of Mines drilled 3 holes for a total of 2,630 feet. The sample results of this drilling plus available data from previous drilling and sampling are appended to this report."

No country now has enough of all minerals for its own use. The problems of satisfaction of both national and world demands under these conditions have become international in scope, and history supplies no obvious solutions. The minerals of Canada are coming to play a prominent part in such problems. Production and Reserves In the last decade Canada has rapidly advanced in mineral production. In 1928 the total value of mineral products from Canadian sources reached 273 millions of dollars. Canada ranks first in production of nickel, first in asbestos, second in cobalt, third in gold and silver, fourth in lead and copper, and sixth in zinc.

Knowledge of environmental risks associated with a property will allow better appraisal of a property&apos;s overall desirability prior to completing the transaction. It is possible that the cost of environmental cleanup could exceed the value of the property. Topics appropriately investigated include permit status, water quality, past use of the property, hazardous materials management, storage tanks, public records pertaining to the environmental character of the property, and environmental costs.

The Fosterville Gold mine is located approximately 20km to the East of Bendigo in central Victoria. The gold at Fosterville occurs as solid solution within disseminated arsenopyrite and pyrite. The Fosterville ore bodies contain various amounts of native carbon in the form of bituminous coal. This carbon (Non-Carbonate Carbon or NCC) has been the predominant mechanism for gold loss from the processing facility through”preg-robbing”.Processing of the Fosterville ore is achieved initially through crushing, grinding and flotation to extract the sulphides. The sulphide concentrate is oxidized using Bacterial Oxidation, before being leached in a conventional CIL circuit. A high portion of the native carbon (NCC) in the mine ore is naturally hydrophobic in nature, and subsequently reports to the flotation concentrate stream, and ultimately onto the CIL circuit. This NCC has a notable preg-robbing ability. Treatment of Black Shale ores, which have elevated NCC levels, has historically resulted in CIL recoveries as low as 35%, with around 60-80% of the gold loss from the leach circuit attributed to preg-robbing.Standard technologies for dealing with a carbonaceous leach feed have been trialed with limited success. The discovery of the significance of heat on leach recoveries, triggered extensive testwork on a range of leach feed and tails samples. Pilot plant testing demonstrated that “Heated Leaching” of the CIL tails was the best process with an average recovery increase of 7.5% being achieved. Following a successful pilot study, an engineering feasibility study was completed by Minerva Engineering, and the project economics determined. With strong recovery gains evident and a predicted project payback of 1-1.5 years, approval for the installation of the full scale plant was granted. Detailed design commenced in September 2008 with installation commencing in January 2009. The circuit was successfully commissioned in April 2009.Following commissioning, the Heated Leach circuit has achieved recovery gains of 4-14%, and has proven itself to be a significant contributor to the overall plant performance.

DELN ITE Mines Limited is located in Deloro township, on the west end of the south break of the Porcupine Camp. Mining operations are currently being carried out on the downward extension of a system of quartz veins in an andesite zone. This zone has been followed from surface to the present bottom level of 5,250 feet. The changing mineralogy of the vein system has involved an increase in tourmaline content from the surface downwards, so that the veins at the lower levels are composed of dark brown quartz-tourmaline. The drilling problem presented by these extremely hard veins was partially alleviated by the development and adoption of a one-inch drill bit. All blast-hole drilling is now done with the one-inch bit, without any difference in hole spacing.

Philip Environmental Services Corporation&apos;s (Philip&apos;s) innovative fluidized bed thermal desorption system recovers mercury from contaminated soil. Referred to as the Thermal Recycling System, Philip has constructed a mobile thermal desorption system that has a processing rate up to five tons per hour. The system includes a continuous-feed system, all radiant heat, inert gas atmosphere, hot gas filter, two-stage cooling, and a water treatment system. Based on treatability studies, the processed soil can meet cleanup objectives as low as two milligrams per kilogram and passes the mercury toxicity characteristic leaching procedure test.

Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.
