This paper demonstrates use of remotely sensed imagery in promoting sustainable mining. Remote sensing technology can be used during all phases of a mining project û from evaluating the resource, to making extraction more cost-effective, through to monitoring, mine closure and remediation. Use of the new generation of satellite platforms with the capability of acquiring satellite data with higher spectral and spatial resolution have the capability to emerge as essential indicator for sustainable development in the minerals industry. A life cycle approach to satellite imagery is discussed. The use of an imagery of the site prior to mining activity establishes the environmental baseline, guides mitigation measures and eventual help in suggesting remediation. Remote imagery provides the cost-effective means of monitoring reclamation, including the growth of planted vegetation, of the mine site and surrounding area. The latest advancements in satellite remote sensing are highlighted to meet the newer challenges of sustainable mining practices. Some of the worldwide successful remote sensing applications for the measurement and evaluation of the sustainable development impact of mining operations are described. Presently available source of imagery and its comparative advantages and disadvantages are provided as a guide. Finally, the limitations of this tool are indicated.

Increased technical and legislative analysis by all parties of interest could result in more efficientand better directed regulatory legislation in the mining industry. Efforts to forestall or frustrate legislation through massive lobbying and public relations efforts are seldom effective over time and often lead to more stringent and far reaching legislation than necessary. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 is perhaps an outstanding example of such insufficiences; a future example may well be regulatory surface mine legislation. Although a lack of extensive hard data seldom enables rapid or sophisticated analysis early in the legislative process, even preliminary analysis may be sufficient. Simple statistical analyses of available data, assessment of the legislative rationale, and subjective appraisal of other non-quantifiable constraints to improved mine safety. An average of 115 underground fatalities at an exposure frequency rate of 0.67 can be reasonably expected in the immediate future, under existing levels of technology, degree of regulation, and economic conditions. If gross unrefined estimates of 6 preparation plant, 5 surface, and 30 strip mining fatalities are assumed, the total fatality industry level could be expected to approximate 156 Serious professional, economic, and technical constraints within the the industry probably preclude any major decrease of these accident levels within the near future

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been concerned for many years with the general problems of underground coal mining and the particular problems due to the methane content of the coal. The Bureau and others have worked diligently to improve the health and safety conditions for underground coal miners. It has been recognized for many years that the methane in coal would have some value if it could he recovered and used, Also its removal before coal mining began or during the mining cycle itself would make mining safer and more economic due to a potential saving in ventilation costs. The work covered in this report was carried out to review methods of removing methane from active and inactive regions of operating coal mines and to determine how the methane could be concentrated and utilized economically.

"New contracts for 65 million long tons of coking coal valued at over $900 million, over the next 15 years, herald the rebirth of Alberta's coal industry. The industry is optimistic that export orders may reach 20 million tons per annum by the mid-1970's. Coal will be extracted from underground and surface mines and it is expected that the total labour force will double from the present 1,200 men within the next two years. Ali the health hazards associated with coal mining are likely to be encountered and it will be incombent on the Provincial Department of Health to specify the standards which relate to health and environment where no such standards have previously existed. This paper examines some of the problems which are being encountered in setting up an environmental health program and reviews the practicability of environmental monitoring methods, with special reference to respirable dust."

DIAMOND drill research work was initiated at the School of Mines, University of Minnesota, in late 1949. The Drilling Symposium held in Duluth that spring highlighted the problem of high cost and core recovery and the need for controlled testing. An advisory committee made up of informed representatives of both mining companies and drilling companies was formed to suggest and advise on a program of drill research. A Hy-Mac hydraulic drill unit, see Fig. 1, especially designed for experimental testing, was obtained for this work by the School of Mines through the courtesy of the Carboloy Co. It is an extremely flexible unit, capable of exerting a forward thrust of about 1750 lb and turning at speeds from 650 to 2200 rpm. The Port Radium mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited, located on Great Bear Lake only a few miles from the Arctic Circle in north-western Canada, is the oldest uranium producer in Canada, The first concentrates were produced in 1933 and except for a period between 1940 and 1942 the mill has operated continuously. Although it is located in a remote area, and compared to more recent mines in other areas is a small tonnage operation, nonetheless the relatively high grade of the Port Radium ore has permitted operation to date on an economical basis. The mill process at Port Radium includes the original gravity concentration mill, and since 1952 an acid leaching plant which treats tailings from the gravity mill and tailings recovered by dredging of residues from underwater dumps in Great Bear Lake. The pregnant solution from the leach plant has to date been processed through aluminum reduction to yield an intermediate grade uranous phosphate-arsenate precipitate, Because of the rising costs of the aluminum reduction process, and its sensitivity to ore composition, Eldorado became interested in possible application to Port Radium of the solvent extraction processes of which we were obtaining increasing information in the latter part of 1954 and during 1955.

With the proven “Plug & Work” concept developed by SMS Siemag, automation systems are tested and optimized in the test field in a near-reality environment before being shipped and commissioned at a customer’s site. The process and production simulations provide scenes showing the specific mechanical equipment, the drive systems and the technology of the corresponding customer plant. Beside the technological simulation of the plant and the IO-simulation with the automation system, the production simulation is one of the three important parts of the Plug & Work simulation environment. It serves two important additional purposes: the 3D visualization of the entire customer plant on the one hand and the mapping of the logistic procedures in the plant on the other. In order to provide a close-to-reality visualization of the plant, the original design data of the individual customer plant are used for creating the visualization and prepared using an appropriate export filter. In this way, it is ensured that production sequences can be optimized in advance together with the customer, so that each customer can be trained on his own future plant.

A major concern with blasting at surface mines is generation of ground vibrations and airblast and their effects on nearby residences. This Bureau of Mines report looks at the use of millisecond delays in blast design and their effect on the resulting ground vibrations and airblast. A total of 52 production blasts were instrumented and monitored at a surface coal mine in southern Indiana. Arrays of seismographs were used to gather time histories of vibrations and airblast. The data were analyzed for peak values of vibration and airblast and for frequency con-tent. Various delay intervals were used within and between rows of blastholes. Delay intervals within rows were 17 and 42 ms, and those between rows ranged from 30 to 100 msj these intervals are equivalent to 0.5 and 1.3 ms/ft within rows and 1.2 to 4.3 ms/ft between rows. Sub-sonic delay intervals within rows reduced airblast by 6 dB. Large delay intervals between rows reduced the amplitude of ground vibrations; their frequency depended primarily upon the geology of the mine site.

Although the mining of metals was well established by the time of the Roman Empire mining skills did not really advance greatly for many centuries. Miners did not have the scientific knowledge to distinguish minerals, to process them, and to obtain the best recovery. Each mine essentially developed its own methods in isolation, most of them dangerous. However, with the beginning of the industrial revolution in the early 18th century there was a rapid increase in mining activity in Central and Western Europe and an accompanying need to educate professionals in the developing fields of science and technology. There was also a need for specialised schools (for example, Schools of Mines) to accomplish this since the universities of the time, formed as early as the first half of the 12th century, were cloistered institutions, focused on the study of classics, theology and law. The earliest attempts at organised technical education were made in 1702 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Frieberg, Germany (Table 1) to service rich copper mines, and in 1747 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Paris. By this time, the industrial revolution was well under way and other Schools rapidly followed, at Clausthal in the Ruhr region of Germany in 1775; in 1777 at Almanden to service the mercury mines of Spain (later transferred to Madrid); in 1780 at St Petersburg, Russia and at Falun, Sweden in 1819. The academic staff for these new institutions were often trained in the original School at Frieberg.

The Gross Rosebel gold deposits are located in the Guiana Shield of north central Suriname. Initial discovery of surficial gold in 1880 by local artisanal miners preceded small-scale mechanized mining from 1885 to 1939. The first systematic exploration program was carried out by Placer Development from 1974 to 1977. In May 1992 Golden Star Resources optioned the property. Initial shallow reconnaissance diamond drilling of the extensive surface geochemical anomalies intersected sporadic gold mineralization with no apparent continuity between drill sections. Successive deep augering, trenching and systematic grid drilling based on information from surface mapping allowed development of a preliminary geological model. Further drilling of specific structural-lithologic targets and more complete synthesis of geological data from the trenching and deep auger sampling added to the geological model and defined the multiple controls of gold mineralization. Carefully planned infill drilling on a tighter grid spacing resulted in progressive definition of reserves within six discrete gold deposits. In a complex geological setting, the key to success at Gross Rosebel was persistent, systematic exploration, detailed mapping, careful core logging and perceptive geological interpretation. Reserves now stand at 48.6 Mt at 1.6 glt Au, or 2.4 million ounces of gold. The purpose of this paper is to describe the progression of exploration activity that led to the definition of substantial gold reserves and to summarize the geology of the deposits.

THIS paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, pro- [ ] duced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is commonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. [ ] The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. , I). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which, thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. "Studies have shown that there is a correlation between commissioning and start-up time, i.e. time to reach full plant design capacity, and the degree of innovation and technical/engineering uncertainty in the project design. The paper describes the types of start-up curves for plants according to the level of technology or uncertainty in the process design. The need to properly describe and understand the commissioning and start-up time is examined using these curves and the importance on project success is highlighted. A number of case histories of recent mining and metallurgical projects are also reviewed. Finally, the paper reviews how to better assess the level of start-up uncertainty associated with a project and makes suggestions for decreasing the commissioning time due to technological risk.INTRODUCTIOThe start-up of a new mining and metallurgical facility, a much anticipated event, is a critical step in the life of such a project. Achieving a successful start-up and reaching the design capacity on-time requires careful planning, a thorough understanding of the key technological and engineering components involved and a well-trained and adequatelystaffed start-up crew. In this paper, some of the aspects related to start-up of a mining/metallurgical project will be explored, and in particular, the impact of the technology component will be examined. In order to illustrate this, a number of case histories based on recent mining and metallurgical projects will be discussed. Ways of assessing and understanding the uncertainty associated with technological issues related to start-up of a mining and metallurgical plant will also be examined.The history on mining and metallurgy is full of success stories of great mines and mills that are now considered “company makers” (well known examples of such successes include the Horne mine for Noranda which had a 1 year start-up in 1926-27, the Dome mine for Placer Dome, the Grasberg deposit for FMI in Indonesia). Less well documented are specific studies relating to plant start-ups and what constitutes a success or a failure, however there are a few notable references in the literature and these will be reviewed."

THE Consolidated Mining and Smelting CO. of Canada Ltd. has operated a lead smelter at Trail, B. C., for many years. In order to take advantage of metallurgical advances, as well as to improve materials handling methods, this company, commonly known as "Cominco," commenced planning a program of smelter revision and modernization some years ago. The first stage of this program involved the design and construction of a new blast furnace gas cleaning system. The selection of equipment, the design of facilities, and preliminary operating details of this system will be dealt with in this paper. The essential problem was to clean and collect 100 tons of dust daily from 153,000 cfm* (12,225 lb per min) of lead blast furnace gas which varied in temperature from 350º to 1100°F. Because it was desired to collect the dust dry, either a Cottrell or a baghouse cleaning plant was to be selected. Comin-co's many years of experience with both systems provided a background for choosing the most satisfactory installation. All information pertinent to the two methods of dust recovery was carefully investigated, and it was decided to replace the existing equipment with a baghouse. Very briefly, the reasons for this decision were as follows: 1—A baghouse installation would be practical because the SO2 content of the gas was low and corrosion would not be a problem if the baghouse operating temperatures were held sufficiently above the dew point. 2—Variations in the physical characteristics of fume and dust, which are inherent in this blast furnace operation, should not substantially affect the operating efficiency of a baghouse. 3—For the same capital cost, metal losses (stack and water losses) would be appreciably less in a baghouse. 4—A baghouse would be easier to operate, and would not require the use of highly skilled labor. 5—Operating and maintenance costs of a bag-house would be lower. 6—The only available space for reconstruction was relatively small, and not suited to a Cottrell installation. Once the baghouse system was decided upon, detailed design of the installation was begun. Baghouse Design Gas Cooling: Before the required capacity of the baghouse could be determined, the method of cooling the gas to the temperature necessary for bag-house operation had to be chosen. The problem confronting the design engineers was how best to cool 153,000 cfm of gas from a temperature ranging from 350°F to brief peaks of 1100°F, down to 210°F, the maximum safe baghouse inlet temperature. A survey of existing blast furnace gas temperatures in the outlet flue showed that the normal range was as given in Table I. The obvious choices of cooling method were: 1— cool completely by the addition of tempering air; 2—utilize a heat exchanger; 3—cool by radiation; and 4—cool with water spray in conjunction with the admission of tempering air. The advantages and disadvantages of the various cooling methods were: Air Addition: To cool completely by the admission of tempering air involved tremendous volumes, Fig. 1. For example, to cool 1 lb of blast furnace gas at 450°F requires 1.84 lb of air at 80°F or 1.60 lb at 60°F. As it is necessary to design for peak conditions, it can readily be seen that volumes of tempering air in the order of 1,500,000 cfm would have to be handled. Using the normal design figure of 2.5 cu ft per sq ft of bag area, a baghouse installation comprising some 600,000 sq ft of filter cloth would be necessary. Such design requirements would be prohibitive, not only from a standpoint of capital expenditure, but also because of space limitations. Heat Exchanger: The utilization of a heat exchanger was given serious consideration. A horizontal tube unit using air as the medium to cool the required volume of blast furnace gas from 400" to 250°F was investigated. Cooling above 400°F would be done by water spray, and below 250°F by admission of tempering air. The estimated capital cost of such a unit was found to be prohibitive. From an operating standpoint, there was considerable doubt as to whether the soot blowing equipment provided would effectively keep the dust from building up on the tube surface. The performance of heat exchangers operating on dusty gas in other company operations had not been too favorable. Radiation Cooling: Although somewhat cumbersome, gas cooling by radiation from 'trombone' tubes or other similar equipment (cyclones) is employed in many metallurgical operations. Such an installation was also considered. However, calculations showed that an installation much larger than the space available would be required to handle the gas volume involved. For example, to cool 153,000 cfm of blast furnace gas from, say, 600' to 250°F (i.e., remove in the order of 58,500,000 Btu per hr with heat transfer rates varying from 1.1 Btu per sq ft per hr per OF for the higher temperature ranges to 0.88 Btu per sq ft per hr per OF for the lower ranges) would need a cooling area of some 175,000 sq ft.

"High metal prices and advanced technology in open-pit mining methods have resulted in considerable interest in the development of large, low-grade mineral deposits. Brenda Mines Limited is presently testing such a deposit of copper-molybdenum mineralization near Penticton, British Columbia.The mineralization of economic interest at Brenda has a total metallic sulphide content of between 1 and 1.5 per cent. This sulphide content approaches the limits of detectability of standard geophysical methods. How-ever, due to a favourable geological environment, it has been possible to utilize the Induced Polarization Method to outline the mineralization at the Brenda property."

"No. 9 Walton is a new high-rise condominium building located in the Gold Coast area of Chicago. The adjacent building, Walton on the Park, featured 4 levels of below grade parking and utilized a secant pile wall with integral drilled shafts to support the exterior columns. The earth retention system (ERS) for No. 9 Walton also employed a secant pile wall in combination with drilled shafts. The excavation into the soft Chicago clays varied in depth from 9.75 m to 12.5 m (32 feet to 41 feet) below grade. The temporary excavation support used internal braces from the new secant piles to the existing foundation system of Walton on the Park to provide earth retention. Engineering teams for both projects worked together to design the bracing scheme and connections to ensure that the new excavation and internal bracing would not overstress any elements of the existing structure. Further complicating the project, immediately to the west of the project was a historic church founded on shallow spread footings which required underpinning to minimize movements.The project involved three different building owners, small values for acceptable wall movement, an extensive monitoring program and the challenges of merging two earth retention systems. The subsurface conditions at the site, the adjacent structures, the excavation, and the performance are described. A summary of the design methods and the expected movements of the ERS are discussed, and the performance monitoring system is described. Overall, the ERS performed better than expected with less than 1 inch of measured lateral wall movement during and after the excavation was completed. Measured performance of the ERS is compared to the predicted performance and to the performance requirements for the project.INTRODUCTIONNo. 9 Walton is a new high-rise condominium building in Chicago located in the Gold Coast. The building has 3 levels of below grade parking and 36 levels of living space above grade. Developers originally slated the project to be Phase 2 of the Walton on the Park development built in the mid 2000’s, using portions of the existing foundation system for development of the new structure. However, the housing market crash in 2007 prompted cancellation of Phase 2 of the Walton on the Park development. The property sat undeveloped until 2015 when design and construction for No. 9 Walton began under a new development and design team. The project team completed foundation excavation and below grade structures in 2016 with the first units of the building turned over to new homeowners in 2017.The structural design for No. 9 Walton consisted of reinforced concrete columns and slabs, supported laterally by a heavily reinforced concrete central core. Drilled shafts to rock supported the interior columns and core with the exterior columns and foundations integrally included in the earth retention system. The structure had a below-grade footprint of approximately 1,490 m2 (16,000 ft2). The general excavation extended 9.75 m to 12.5 m (32 feet to 41 feet) below street level with the deepest portions at the central building core mat foundation."

Social licence to mine is influenced by society’s perception of the mining sector’s ability to effectively rehabilitate mined land and for governments to appropriately regulate that process for the broader community benefit. In Queensland, Australia, many mine rehabilitation personnel working for active coalmines, as either staff, consultants or contractors, belong to the Central Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Group (CQMRG). The CQMRG was established 23 years ago with the aim of sharing informal knowledge related to practical aspects of rehabilitation in order to leave as positive a legacy as possible from mined land. This voluntary group of professionals also includes members from regulatory agencies and civil society. Within the dynamic regional mining environment, mine rehabilitation professionals benefit from sharing their informal knowledge.CQMRG is currently a group in transition. Mining boom and downturn cycles have exacerbated the loss of accumulated knowledge in the core CQMRG membership due to rapid changes in personnel at mines in the region. Additionally, some of the most experienced CQMRG-affiliated rehabilitation practitioners are approaching the end of their careers and want their valuable and less formal knowledge retained. "The Code was developed in 2004 through the Collaboration Agreement between Institution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) and the Ministry of Mining (Chile) in Dec 2002. It is an amalgamation of current practices with respect to standards and procedures for exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves for the purpose of public reporting. Certification is required to prepare and issue information on mineral assets according to the guidelines that regulate the technical, economic, and environmental aspects that satisfy the conditions set by the Chilean capital and financial markets.The Mineral Resources Committee of the Instititution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) is pleased to introduce theCode for the Certification of Exploration Prospects, Mineral Resources and Reserves which is the result of a Collaboration Agreement between the IIMCh and the Ministry of Mining established in December, 2002.This code synthetizes the present practice of the mining industry in regard to standards and procedures applied to exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves with the purpose of reporting publicly on financial instruments based on these mine assets in the capital markets. These standards follow general criteria already adopted and applied by capital markets in those countries characterized by a very dynamic and well developed mining sector such as Australia, Canada, Southafrica, United Kingdom, and others. The work done by the Mineral Resources Committee of the IIMCh has had the recognition of the Combined Reserves International Reporting Standards Committee (CRIRSCO) that leads the establishement of an international code in these matters. CRIRISCO is an entity formed by representatives of the countries previously mentioned, a representative of the Society of Mining Engineers of the UStates and a representative of the IIMCh. The Institution thanks the Ministry of Mining, the representatives of these Ministry in the Mineral Resources Committee, and specially the Minister of Mining, Sr. Alfonso Dulanto Rencoret due to the genuine support given to the IIMCh in the preparation of this Code.The Institution also thanks the Superintendencia de Valores y Seguros (SVS) because of the help given continuously to the Committee as well as by the interchange of opinions and suggestions received during the preparation of this document."

"Regenerative and recuperative burner systems require advanced combustion techniques to minimize NOx emissions. Various methods of pollutant minimization and furnace design considerations are described. Cited examples are a large high temperature furnace and a small Zinc vaporizing furnace. The concept of total carbon footprint is introduced. The application of Biomass combustion as an effective method of cost and green-house gas (GHG) reduction is discussed. Practical considerations of scale, location and process limitations are discussed. Two examples of biomass fired equipment are cited. Ideal sites have large biomass resources available locally. Processed biomass fuels will be an important substitute for fossil fuel. INTRODUCTIONIn 1992, I presented a paper entitled Combustion Strategies In The Modern Industrial Environment (1992). At that time an abundant supply of cheap fossil fuel made many of the measures I talked about difficult to justify for anything but new equipment.Since 1992 we, as a society, have demonstrated an ability to accelerate the pace of industrial and societal change. The term industrial revolution applied to this age of incessant change is completely meaningless, implying a discrete moment in historical time. What our society has built is a system capable of unfettered, continuous and accelerating technological change. With this change comes an increasing demand for energy and materials.This year is the anniversary of the Titanic disaster, a moment in time when technological certainty met the caprice of nature and gave us a brutal reminder of what can happen to us if we underestimate that power (Mowbray, 1912). In the intervening interval we have regained the technological arrogance that was lost in 1912 bringing us back to the problems of climate change and the need for sustainable industrial activities.We use advanced mathematics to describe many complex systems, sometimes with disastrous results. For example there has been a recent attempt to model the global economy as a completely deterministic system.
