MECHANIZATION During the last fifteen years, numerous attempts have been made to mechanize the operations of loading ore and placing till. It is to be regretted that, to date, little progress has been made in this direction. The comparative efficiency of manual labour in Spain is the factor largely responsible for the failure to cheapen costs by mechanization. The necessity for careful classification of the ore and the need for keeping all openings small also makes the problem one of difficulty. It may be of interest to describe the various attempts at mechanization that have so far been made. CONVEYORS: (1) When stoping by layout III in San Dionisio, a trial was made of transporting the filling by jigging conveyors. This method proved un-economical, as the wall building and spreading of the till could not keep pace with the delivery, with the result that the machinery was idle a great part of the shift. (2) The transport of ore from the working places to the ore-passes by jigging conveyors and belts was also tried. Although more successful than in the case of the fill, the method could not compete with that of hand tramming, principally due to the high cost of (a) maintenance caused by the abrasiveness of pyrites, and (b) labour constantly employed on re-aligning the conveyors owing to the constant settlement of the floor. In a few cases, where a sill floor was being blocked out in virgin ground, the method showed a saving. SCRAPERS: Frequent attempts at loading by scrapers have been made, but again the only success obtained has been in the blocking-out of sill floors. The principal obstacle to the successful application of scraping, other than on the sill floor, has been that the openings, which have to be small, call for a light scraper outfit, whereas, in practice, a heavy scraper and at least a 25 h.p. winch are necessary for handling satisfactorily the ore, which is heavy and which breaks somewhat blockily.

Concrete is a mixture of a fine aggregate (sand), a coarse aggregate (gravel), cement, and water. Cement itself is the most expensive of the ingredients but generally amounts to only about 10% of the concrete mixture. Cement raw materials include calcium, alumina, iron oxide, silica, and gypsum. They are heated and chemically changed into clinker "minerals," which are then ground and shipped as cement. Each of the four main clinker minerals-tricalcium silicate, dicalcium silicate, tricalcium aluminate, and tetracalcium aluminoferrite-impart specific strength and compositional properties to the final concrete product. During hydration of the cement, chemical changes produce new minerals that include calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-S-H, the main constituent of hydrated cement paste), calcium hydroxide, and calcium, sodium, potassium, and sulfate ions, among others. Two main reactions can occur that may be deleterious to concrete. Normal cement pore solutions, in a hydrated cement, contain sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. If these alkali concentrations are too high, they can react with the siliceous aggregate (alkali-silica reaction, or ASR) to form an alkali-rich calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-N+K-S-H), which, upon prolonged contact with water, can expand to crack the concrete. The other deleterious reaction occurs when the mineral ettringite (Ca6A12(S04)3OH12. 26H20) forms after the concrete is hardened (delayed ettringite formation) and cracks the concrete. Many of the concrete bridges and structures built in New Mexico in the past 20 years are in need of replacement due to deterioration. Many others constructed very early on in the century are still sound. By collecting and analyzing samples of both old and new concrete and good and bad concrete, we compared their differences on both a microscopic and macroscopic scale. Samples taken from concrete sidewalks, parking lots, drainage canals, spillways, and a railroad-trestle foundation have construction dates that range from 1923 to 1997. They were analyzed by electron microprobe and by petrographic microscopy. Cracks, air voids, and aggregate alteration were primary locations for investigation and analysis. Using the electron microprobe, ettringite was found in voids of most of the samples, both in good and bad concrete. This leads us to believe that ettringite formation is not causing distress in the concrete. There was one exception in which ettringite was found lining a crack. In this instance, ettringite may have the ability to further the cracking and cause distress. No alkali-silica gel was identified with the microprobe. Using the petrographic microscope in cross-polarized light, a light-brown material was observed that lined some of the air voids and cracks; however, exact mineralogic identifications were not made. Although many instances of chalcedony and other deleterious quartz phases were found, no clear evidence of ASR-gel deterioration was present in our samples using these methods. However, positive identification of the ASR gel was made on an in-place concrete near one of our sample sites and in several sample cores using a newly developed chemical test for the soluble potassium ions associated with the gel. The chemical used in this test is sodium cobaltinitrite, Na3Co(NO2)6.

"Plutonic-related" gold deposits in Interior and SW Alaska (Tintina Gold Belt) vary significantly in size, grade, vein/deposit morphology, depth of emplacement, distance from causative pluton and metal association. Metal associations such as Au-Bi and Au-As- (Sb-Hg) are a good empirical indicator of the depth of emplacement and distance from causative pluton. These associations have been used successfully in exploration. Results from several analytical techniques also suggest a phenomenological cause for these metal associations. Gold and bismuth have paired mineralogy at high temperatures and, thus, are best correlated at deposits that are deep and/or close to causative intrusions.

Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela all have a higher than average political risk compared with other South American countries. Successful operations require good political-risk information, a thorough political-risk-management plan and a strategy to deal with political-risk perception on the part of the investing public. Colombia is perceived as about the riskiest place in the world to do business. A selection of recent headlines reads: “Colombia on the brink” (Economist, 1998), “Colombia’s ship of state is sinking” (Insight on the News, 1998), or simply “Bad news” (US Catholic, 1998). The World’s Most Dangerous Places rates Colombia as “currently the most dangerous place in the Western Hemisphere, and perhaps the world” (Aral and Pelton,1998). And many prospective investors and analysts say to Greystar Resources: “Yes, we love your results, but Colombia?”

When the first rush of miners took place on the Molyneux River, in the Dunstan Gorge, the gold was won by means of cradling the gravel, which was shovelled from the various beaches and crevices in the rock-bound sides of the river.The above method of winning the gold was only practicable when the beaches were not covered with water, hence the work was usually carried on during the winter months, the ordinary level of the river during spring and summer months being some ten or twelve feet above winter level. The melting of the spow in the Lakes water-shed being responsible for the high summer level of the river.As the available beaches were worked out, other methods of winning the gold were proposed and worked with more or less successful results the first advance being to work the bed of the river by means of a spoon dredge. The spoon was made with a round lip or ring of iron, having a steel cutting edge on one half of the circumference, at the opposite side a socket being forged to take a long spar or boom, which was securely fitted thereto. At intervals round the hoop, half-inch holes were bored to enable. a bullock-hide bag to be laced on to same. The spoon was worked from a pontoon which carried a crab winch, tackles and the necessary washing appliances to treat the washdirt lifted. In starting to dredge, a tackle was attached to near the upper end of the boom, and a line or chain was carried over a cat head from the crab winch...

The most common methods of processing of uranium ores is sulfuric or carbonate leaching with conversion of hexavalent uranium to uranyl carbonate or sulfate anionic complexes followed by sorption of the later by strong base anion (SBA) exchange resins. It is known that chloride anion has high affinity for SBA resins so that it depresses sorption of anionic complexes of uranyl. Application of the SBA resins becomes impractical for recovery of uranium when chloride concentration in pregnant leach solution exceeds 3-5 g/l [1-3].

Since its introduction in 2002, the modern air jig has processed a wide array of coals throughout the world. This paper explores the reasons and justifications for the installations and provides case history performance data. Specifically highlighted are air jig plants processing metallurgical coal in Colombia, bituminous coal in the United States and India and lignite in the United States and Spain. Each installation has unique reasons to justify an air jig facility. It is important to note that not all of the justifications were based on the ?most cost effective yield?, normally a mantra for coal preparation plant designers and owners. Dry jigging of coal has long been a proven technique for upgrading coal, the modern air jig, with its improved efficiency and operating systems simply extended the range of applications. In some cases, it even allows market quality coal to be produced when no other option is possible.

Mining, like most other businesses, is based upon capital assets; and the primary cap- ital of any mining company is its ore reserve. A company's survival and growth is, thus, dep- endent upon its ability to replace, increase, redistribute and to diversify its ore reserves. A Kennecott executive addressing a group of geologists in 1957 stated, "Management expects a geologist to find ore! That is the primary objective and the justification of the geologist in the minerals industry. There is no other function that we can rationalize." This is, however, a restricted point of view, and one which I an sure is not fully shared by mining executives or mine operators at the present time. Ore reserves are 'made' as well as 'found' and the geologist contributes to this process. A mining geologist engages in activity in- volving the study of geology in connection with the total mining operation. His major task is the adaption of geological knowledge of ore de- posits and rock behaviour to mining needs, and the application of principles of the science of geology to specific problems of finding, develop- ing and extracting of ore bodies.

Records show that waterflooding was tried in Osage County as early as 1934, but it was not economically important until a large unitized flood in the North Burbank field was begun in 1950. Development was rapid and by the end of 1960, there were 70 active water flood projects and 16 active pressure-maintenance projects in the County. The locations and status of the water-flood and pressure-maintenance projects in Osage County on December 31, 1960 are shown in figure 1, and information pertaining to these projects as of July 1, 1960 is given in table 1. For the past several years, Bureau of Mines petroleum engineers have arranged tours of selected waterflooding projects for the spring meeting of the Kansas-Oklahoma Water flood Association. These tours are conducted to demonstrate unique operating methods and new field equipment and to provide additional opportunities for exchanging information. Each of these tours has been supplemented by a published report describing in detail the projects visited. This report has been prepared for distribution during the 1961 spring tour of three waterflooding projects and a pressure-maintenance project in Osage County, Okla. (fig. 2).

Introduction Froth flotation is one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Its aim is to upgrade the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and separating selected minerals from undesired gangue materials. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. Its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation has also shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a given equipment configuration. The operation must exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the mechanical flotation cell is scaleable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required - pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants - are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. Froth flotation is certainly one of the most versatile and forgiving unit operations in the chemical, mining, and agricultural industries. The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is fairly easy to get reasonable results and relatively difficult to get excellent results. Why is it so difficult to fine tune the froth flotation process? There are some obvious reasons and a few not-so-obvious factors. The obvious category would certainly contain the tendency of natural feed materials (ores and raw coals) to have variable physical, metallurgical, and surface properties. This occurs even when special care is taken to minimize such differences with blending. There is another obvious reason for difficulty. An inherent broadness of the feed particle size range to flotation results from using any of the common industrial-scalefine grinding devices - ball-, rod-, or autogenous mills. Research has been done into the chemical reagent and equipment aspects of flotation. It has shown strong interactions (limitations) of chemical reagents and equipment on larger and smaller particles. The point is that current flotation practice works best on average- or medium-sized feed particles. The greater the amount of large or small particles, or of both large and small, the more difficult it is to achieve excellent flotation results. Other reasonably obvious factors include: • variations in mineral type and liberation sizes; • water chemistry variations such as those involving Ca", C03, or Fe", or various soluble metal cations; • the presence of stray organic materials such as returning soluble reagents or partially degraded reagents in reuse water; • the lack of reliable on-line instrumentation for monitoring and control; • frequent equipment malfunctions of all types; • excessive feed rates for installed plant capacity; • poor operator interaction with the process; and • poor reagent dosage control. There are less obvious, but real limitations to flotation. These are inherent in the design and operating characteristics of the most common cell design in use today - the mechanical flotation cell. Individual performance attributes of the chemical reagents used, along with their manner of use, also carry limitations. The bulk of this paper will deal with chemical reagents and their use. Chemical reagents In 1979, the author and his co-workers were asked to invent and implement, at the industrial scale, new flotation reagent chemistry. After reviewing some of the literature (Sutherland and Wark, 1955; Klassen and Mokrousov, 1959; M. Fuerstenau, 1962; D. Fuerstenau, 1976; and Leja, 1982), a series of carefully controlled plant scale tests were set up. These tests were designed to understand existing reagent scale-up from the laboratory to the plant. They were to quantify at the plant level the effect of some of the more important, controllable chemical reagent factors (frother and collector type, frother and collector dosage, pH effects). Mining wastes have received individual attention under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) since its inception, in recognition of the special characteristics that distinguish mining wastes from other solid wastes. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized that: - Mining wastes are generated in much larger volumes than other industrial wastes. Most material handled in mining is waste (over 99% in many cases) and not marketable product, whereas waste is a small portion of raw materials used in most industries. Consequently, controls used for hazardous wastes may be technically infeasible or economically impractical. - Nearly all mining waste is managed at the site of generation and is land-disposed. . - Mining wastes typically pose lower hazards than other industrial wastes. Mining operations are located predominantly in sparsely populated areas and in arid or semi-arid areas with little surface water runoff and deeper water tables.

The overall injury experience, excluding officeworkers, at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, reported by operators, was 174 fatal and 11,357 nonfatal disabling work injuries during an aggregate worktime of 451 million man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 25.55 per million man-hours, comprising 0.39 for the fatal and 25.17 for the nonfatal injuries. The combined severity rate of the disabilities was 3,779 days lost or charged per million man- hours, consisting of 2,314 for the fatal and 1,465 for the nonfatal injuries. The average severity of all disabilities during 1961-63, was 148 days per injury. The number of days lost and/or charged, ex- cluding officeworkers, at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, was 1,440,000 days charged to fatal injuries and 661,290 days lost from nonfatal injuries. An average of 70,966 men were at work daily. The outstanding cause for fatal injuries was the fall of rock or ore from the back, while most of the nonfatal injuries were caused by handling materials, slips or falls of persons, machinery, falls of rock or ore from back and side, and haulage. Injury experience at primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63, excluding officeworkers, was 23 fatal and 3,214 nonfatal disabling injuries during a total work- time of 277 million man-hours. The injuries occurred at frequency rates of 0.08 per million man-hours for the fatalities and 11.61 for the nonfatal disabilities. The severity rate for all injuries of 1,085 days lost or charged per million man-hours comprised 498 for fatal and 587 for nonfatal injuries. The number of days lost, excluding officeworkers, at primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63 was 138,000 from fatal injuries and 162,385 from nonfatal injuries, An average of 34,938 men were at work daily an active plant days during the three year period. The injury experience for officeworkers at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63 was 20 nonfatal disabling work injuries, (there were no fatal injuries reported), during an aggregate work-time of 28,694,244 man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 0.70 per million man-hours. There were no fatal injuries reported for officeworkers at non-ferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63, but seven nonfatal injuries were reported during an aggregate work-time of 30,814,772 man-hours. The frequency rate for these injuries was 0.23 per million man-hours for this period.

Em 2009 a ISA, após anos de trabalho sobre este tema, apresentou a norma ANSI/ISA 18.2, formalizando conceitos, definindo metodologias e sugerindo boas práticas. Este trabalho visa apresentar de maneira objetiva tal norma e demonstrar a viabilidade e eficiência de sua aplicação pratica.

Higher bed height up to 680 mm, including 30 mm hearth layer of sized return sinter and high suction below the grate bars up to 1400 mm WG have resulted in increasing the productivity to a level of 33 t/m2/day and reduced coke rate to a level of 46 kg/tonne sinter. The ferro-wastes like blue dust, flue dust, mill scale, collection from dust catcher and gas cleaning plant, etc have been successfully added in charge mix to produce quality sinters. In this paper, brief description of the work done at Regional Research Laboratory (CSIR) in last few years and two case studies are discussed including the successful development of pan sintering units.

A novel concept involving the deployment of chemical stabilization has the potential to eliminate the need of slurry impoundments and significantly reduce the release of trace elements from the high surface area fine coal waste. The process involves mixing the fine waste generated from the underflow of a thickener operation with chemical stabilization agents to tie up the water and to create a solid waste material that can be discharged directly. Portland cement, sodium silicate, F type flyash, C type flyash and hydraulic lime were evaluated as stabilizing agents. A detailed experimental study has been conducted to identify the conditions that provide the maximum compressive strength within a short curing time. Results to date show the ability to achieve compressive strengths adequate for equipment to maneuver on using a Portland cement concentration of around 10% by weight. Quick-setting concrete was not found to enhance stabilization time and compressive strength.

"Gold cyanidation kinetics which are often limited in commercial operations by the rate of oxygen dissolution from gas bubbles into the slurry, are discussed. Emerging technologies for improving the rate of oxygen dissolution are compared and the gas efficiency, energy use and operating performance of inverted cones and a device based on a jet diffuser are examined. The effect of solids loading is also reviewed and a relationship between operating parameters and the kilograms oxygen dissolved per kilowatt-hour is presented.Inverted cones are shown to create slurry settling problems at high gas flow rates and surface tension lowering agents are shown not to greatly improve the overall rates of oxygen dissolution.The novel jet diffuser technology operates at a range of gas to liquid ratios that improves its energy use over conventional technology and the performance of a number of designs are discussed.Gas efficiencies as high as 35% were observed with the novel diffusers at 40 cm diffuser immersion and are expected to increase at greater immersions. Energy use of 1.8 kg 02 I kWh were estimated for prototype full size diffusers operating at 100 cm immersion. Energy use of 3.S kg 02 /kWh is conservatively expected at 600 cm immersion.IntroductionGold ExtractionGold that can not be recovered by gravity separation can be recovered by either the Merrill-Crow process or the newer carbon in pulp (CIP) or carbon in leach (CIL) processes 1. Reductions in operating costs and improvements in gold recovery are central mill operating strategies. This paper introduces a number of emerging technologies and provides a basis for comparison of the performance. It shows that the basis for comparison of a particular technology depends on the type of gold extraction circuit employed and the type of reactants employed."

Testwork was done with two different adsorbents, Dowex-Minix gold-selective resin and activated carbon, to detemine their relative performances with regard to gold recovery from clarified low-grade solution employing a fixed-bed operation. The mill discharge from the milling-in-cyanide operation at a Witwatersrand gold mine was used as feed to the adsorption columns. A small amount of gold was leached during the milling process, so that this solution simulates, to a certain extent, a low-grade solution representative of a heap-leach operation. A speciation of the feed solution was done to establish which metal complexes were present in the milling-in-cyanide solution. This information was necessary to interpret metal loadings on the resin, as base metal cyanide species and their respective charges have an effect on the final gold loading capacity of the resin. Equilibrium isotherms were established for both adsorbents to estimate the rate of adsorbent flow anticipated for this specific feed solution. Breakthrough profiles were obtained at two different superficial linear velocities for each adsorbent. Mass transfer zone heights determined from the test work and the elution/regeneration time requirements were used to size a 150 m3/h full-scale plant for both adsorbents. A counter current configuration of adsorption columns, using three columns, should be suitable to recover gold effectively and to produce an effluent with a gold concentration below 0.01 mg/l. Based on the results obtained from the breakthrough tests, a preliminary techno-economic comparison was done between the resin-in-solution and carbon-in-solution options for the recovery of gold from low-grade solutions. This study indicated that the capital expenditure for a carbon-in-solution plant would be about 33 percent higher than that of a resin-in-solution plant. The operating expenditure for a resin-in-solution plant is expected to be only 60per cent of that for a carbon-in-solution plant. Keywords: resin-in-solution, carbon-in-solution, heap leach.
