Semi-autogenous grinding mills play a critical role in the processing stage of many mining operations. They are also one of the most intensive energy consumers of the entire process. Current forecasting techniques of energy consumption base their inferences on feeding ore mineralogical features, SAG dimensions, and operational variables. Experts recognize their capabilities to provide adequate guidelines but also their lack of accuracy when real-time forecasting is desired. As an alternative, we propose the use of real-time operational variables (feed tonnage, bearing pressure, and spindle speed) to forecast the upcoming energy consumption via machine learning and deep learning techniques. Several predictive methods were studied: polynomial regression, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, multilayer perceptron, long short-term memory, and gated recurrent units. A step-by-step workflow on how to deal with real datasets, and how to find optimum models and final model selection is presented. In particular, recurrent neural networks achieved the best forecasting metrics in the energy consumption prediction task. The workflow has the potential of being extended to any other temporal and multivariate mineral processing datasets.

M Y DUTIES, as a member of the Department of Franco-American War Cooperation of the French High Commission were to study the copper and brass industries of America from the mining of the various non-ferrous metals to the semi-finished, or finished materials. In the pursuit of these studies, it was my privilege to visit a number of industries and organizations in different parts of the country. I first visited most of the Eastern copper refineries that were supplying the Allies with vast amounts of metal. These works are producing their material by the multiple or the series process, although the first method predominates. But, regardless of the process employed all the plants attain an exceptionally high standard of quality in their production. One of the points that particularly attracted attention was the manner in which improvements could be traced from the older worlds to the more recent ones. The impression was that, thanks to a spirit of broad-minded cooperation between the principals of the companies and frequent exchanges of views between members of the staffs, all persons interested benefitted by the experience thus gained, to the advantage of the community at large.

Fatigue in mining operations is a serious issue and a significant contributor to incidents and accidents. While mine operators are using or introducing new technology to monitor operator fatigue, there is little work that focuses on the subjective experience of fatigue and the use of fatigue monitoring technology. To investigate this issue, eight focus groups with a total of 44 operators of heavy haulage equipment working for two mining companies in the Mountain West of the USA participated in 1-h focus groups. The topic of the focus groups was the experience of operator fatigue and issues surrounding fatigue at the workplace. The results of the content analyses suggest that operators are well aware of the signs of fatigue, and that they understand the severity of these signs as well. In addition, they are aware of the effect of fatigue on driving performance and are using a wide range of methods to manage fatigue. Finally, based on participants’ assessment, current fatigue monitoring systems lack face validity and reliability and are perceived as not being effective. The results of this study emphasize the importance of a socio-technical systems perspective in the context of miner health and safety management. Only such a comprehensive perspective can result in improvements that are sustainable.

Mining companies are required by law to improve representation of women on their boards. However, progress in this regard has been slow. Boards of directors play an important role in formulating corporate strategy, risk assessment, and effective governance for sustained financial performance. Although some women have successfully maintained board seats, others have been unable to do so. It is difficult to ascertain whether women are being appointed as tokens to satisfy social pressures, as little is known about the experiences of women board members in mining, which may inform or refute tokenism. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women and 16 men across six listed mining companies. Thematic data analysis revealed evidence of tokenism where recruitment to mining boards is compliance-based and is informally driven by influential directors. Adverse boardroom experiences that further confirmed tokenism were reported by women, such as disregarding their contributions, condescending behaviour, and limited influence in decision-making, while other women sought to validate their competence and oppose social exclusion. This study recommends that a strong Board Chair and nominations committee is critical to ensure sustainable recruitment of competent and suitably qualified women; and further foster a culture of inclusivity and valuing gender-diverse boards.

This presentation reports survey findings that aim to modernize the definition and understanding of the term 'mining.' The survey, conducted via LinkedIn in Winter 2024, garnered responses from a diverse group of individuals, including current or former employees of mining or exploration companies, mining consulting firms, service providers, supplier firms, as well as students and retirees with industry experience. The data, ethically approved by the University of Saskatchewan, offers valuable insights into satisfaction levels within the mining sector and suggests an expansion of the identifying characteristics of definitions of mining. This marks the third CIM gaining insights paper by Beneteau, Espley, and Nyabeze, following previous works on 'Career Satisfaction for Women in Mining' (2010) and 'Mentorship Initiatives in the Canadian Mining Industry' (2018*)."

A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

This study investigated the selective removal of arsenic from high-arsenic dust in alkaline systems and the effects of different leaching conditions. The results indicated that the liquid–solid ratio, NaOH concentration, and sulfur dosage had a significant influence on the process. The leaching efficiency of arsenic reached 99.57%, while that of lead was as low as 0.03% under appropriate conditions. In particular, the addition of sulfur can effectively promote the leaching of arsenic and reduce the dissolution of lead in the solutions. An artificial neural network was used to model the leaching process. It consisted of a back-propagation artificial neural network model with a “6–10–2” structure that could effectively simulate and predict the value with more than 99% accuracy. Based on the difference in weights of the different parameters in the neural network model, the relative importance of the parameters related to arsenic and lead leaching efficiency was obtained, which followed the order of NaOH concentration, liquid–solid ratio, sulfur dosage, temperature, time, and stirring speed.

A spatial modeling technique based on the Bayesian neural network (BNN) is proposed. Incorporation of the Bayesian method for posterior probability of the output parameter helps calculate the uncertainty associated with the estimate. Parameters of the BNN model were selected using a grid search algorithm. The expected value and the variance of block support were calculated by Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling of the posterior distribution at discretized points within the block. The BNN model was validated by applying it to the Walker Lake data set and comparing the results with ordinary kriging results. The comparison revealed that the proposed BNN method performs marginally better than ordinary kriging. The variance map is less smooth than with ordinary kriging, and the proportional effect is less in the BNN-based model than in the ordinary kriging model. The developed BNN model was applied to the Coho block of a placer gold deposit in Nome, AK. Results reveal that the BNN model is globally biased for the Coho block and underestimates the sample mean. The grade volume curve was developed by calculating the block mean and block variance after discretizing the block into a number of points and applying the BNN model to each discretized point.

The truck haulage data from open-pit mine sites are usually massive and multidimensional with multi-peak Gaussian distributions. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are well-known machine learning algorithms to handle massive and multidimensional data for building models. Moreover, Gaussian mixture modeling (GMM) is a suitable option for processing the data under multi-peak Gaussian distributions and improving model accuracy. For the first time, this study used a back propagation neural network (BPNN), an extreme learning machine (ELM), and a Bayesian regularized neural network (BRNN) coupled with GMM to deal with the complex truck haulage data and build three weighted ensemble models (WE-BPNN, WE-ELM, and WE-BRNN models) to predict truck productivity at mine sites. Decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), gradient boosting machine (GBM), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) were used to build models to be compared with the weighted ensemble models. The results showed that the WE-BRNN had a higher accuracy than the WE-BPNN and WE-ELM models. The proposed weighted ensemble models performed better than the benchmark models in predicting truck productivity, indicating that a weighted ensemble approach based on the GMM analysis significantly improved the model accuracy. Based on the relative importance analysis, haul distance was the most crucial input variable for predicting truck productivity. This study provides a new approach to predicting truck productivity, which will help mining companies make sound budget decisions and improve mine planning.

Abstract - The Horne mine was truly a world class Cu and Au deposit. Between 1927 and 1989, it produced some 260 t of Au and 1.13 Mt of Cu from 53.7 Mt of ore that averaged 2.22% Cu, 6.1 g/t Au and 13 g/t Ag. The total value of Au and Cu production from the Horne deposit at metal prices of US$300/oz Au and US$1.00/lb Cu is an outstanding US$5.2 billion. The Horne mine was also a company builder. After optioning the property from Ed Horne (Tremoy Syndicate) in 1922, the Thomson-Chadbourne Syndicate discovered the deposit in 1923 and quickly grew to become Noranda, one of the world’s premier mining companies. This discovery fuelled exploration and, along with subsequent discoveries in the Val d’Or-Cadillac camps, led to the "economic development" of northwestern Quebec. The Horne deposit influenced and continues to influence genetic models for volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Early observations at Horne contributed to an epigenetic replacement theory for VMS deposits. The most recent genetic model for the Horne, invoking sub-seafloor sulfide replacement of silicified and sericitized volcaniclastic host rocks within a graben, has subsequently been proposed for another giant VMS deposit, the Kidd Creek mine. The Horne and Kidd Creek deposits show many similarities, such as localization within synvolcanic grabens, long-lived hydrothermal activity uninterrupted by volcanism, sub-seafloor replacement sulfides, stacked sulfide lenses, zone refining, silicified footwall rocks characterized by high positive ?18O values, and association with FIII rhyolites. Notable differences between the two deposits include the lack of andesitic, basaltic or komatiitic flows at Horne, different inferred water depths, high Au content at Horne versus negligible Au, but sub-economic to economic concentrations of Sn, In and Cd at Kidd Creek.

Introduction The post World War II nuclear arms race and interest in nuclear power generation resulted in a significant demand for uranium in the 1950’s. This led to the development of uranium solvent extraction technology and uranium became the first metal to be recovered on a large scale by solvent extraction (SX) (1), interestingly more than 100 years after the extraction of uranium from an acid nitrate solution using diethyl ether was first reported by Peligot.(2) For a variety of reasons discussed elsewhere (3,4) there have been upheavals in the supply demand picture and price for uranium since the 1960’s. (Figure 1) The low price of uranium from the mid 1980’s until 2004 resulted in a depression of new resource exploration and mine development along with uranium mine / mill closures and decommissioning. People with skills in uranium processing could not find suitable employment and many experienced engineers and metallurgists took jobs elsewhere or retired. This resulted in a significant brain drain with respect to uranium processing technology.

Methane emissions from the active face areas and from the fractured formations overlying the mined coalbed can affect safety and productivity in longwall mines. Since ventilation alone may not be sufficient to control the methane levels on a longwall operation, gob vent boreholes (GVB), horizontal and vertical drainage boreholes, and their combinations are drilled and used as supplementary methane control measures in many mines. However, in most cases, the types of degasification wellbores chosen are decided based on previous experiences without analyzing the different factors that may affect this decision. This study describes the development of an expert classification system used as a decision tool. It was built using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) type artificial neural network (ANN) structure. The ANN was trained using different geographical locations, longwall operation parameters, and coalbed characteristics as input and was tested to classify the output into four different selections, which are actual degasification designs that US longwall mines utilize. The ANN network selected no degasification, GVB, horizontal and GVB, and horizontal, vertical and GVB options with high accuracy. The results suggest that the model can be used as a decision tool for degasification system selection using site- and mine-specific conditions. Such a model can also be used as a screening tool to decide which degasification design should be investigated in detail with more complex numerical techniques.

The valuation of early-stage exploration projects requires a valuer to take into account a large number of uncertain value drivers, the interplay among which may be non-linear. This paper examines some of the key value drivers including geology, target metrics, project area and maturity, the market and the psychology behind the decision-making process. The commonly accepted valuation methods and their underlying logic are outlined, including a view on why they evolved, what value drivers they attempt to address and their potential shortcomings. These methods include the multiple of exploration expenditure, geoscience rating, expected values and market based methods. "Tremendous progress has been made in recent years towards developing computational tools that allow ready solution of most common rock engineering problems, with amongst the most advanced of the tools focusing on evaluating engineered openings within Synthetic Rock Masses. These new codes have the potential to allow much more realistic design, but they must not be used without careful calibration – prior to – during and – post completion of any modelling. This paper explores some of the pitfalls of inadequate data collection and suggests more emphasis be given to calibration. Guidelines for minimum levels of parameter data are suggested for improving application of basic to sophisticated modelling codes.INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUNDTremendous progress has been made in recent years towards developing computational tools that allow ready solution of most common rock engineering problems. The degree of sophistication now possible with some of the available codes allows one to tackle extremely complex problems that were not thought tractable even a decade ago. Indeed, generation of synthetic numerical rock masses, based on discrete fracture network representations that closely mimic actual rock mass conditions, such as are shown in Figure 1, is today relatively straightforward, and not as user-challenging as employing state-of-the-art codes of even a few decades ago. This is largely because major improvements in computer graphics and in availability of ready-made user-friendly input-output interfaces have paralleled development of these new codes, now in some cases outpacing actual new analytical/procedure developments. This is something of a reversal from the first few decades of DOS-based rock engineering computational experience, when only rudimentary graphics were available and user-friendly input-output interfaces were virtually non-existent."

As the title indicates the central themes discussed in this contribution are sustainable development, information systems, and extractive industry. More specifically, the objective is to present a prototype for the systematic generation of extractive industry (henceforth: EI) û specific sustainability information. The paper begins with the authorÆs viewpoints on the core notions of sustainability, and development, as well as their relationship to information. These set the stage for the introduction of the information system (IS), as well as the follow-up sustainability information system (SIS) extractive industry sustainability information system (EISIS) concepts and related discussions. The paper continues with a second part, in which, efforts to research and develop an EISIS prototype are described. First, the team is presented. Second, the systemÆs aim and target groups are briefly discussed. After, an articulated overarching EISIS conceptual model emphasising capital accumulation, and service flow concepts û is presented. This is followed by a detailed description of the assembled prototype with a focus on data and information generation. The formulation of data generation, storage and transmission processes, as well as its use in sustainability interpretation rules and their embedment in the conceptual model is made with respect to monetised stock and flow parameters, measured in the appropriate dimensions. In the third part, the author presents and discusses the results of a first round of prototype experimental development in three major EI firms. First, the system observation, and data analysis protocols are described. Second, a review of protocol implementation, and respective results, is made. Finally, the overall performance of the proposed prototype, and development process issues are discussed, before suggesting areas for improvement and future research. The paper ends with a conclusion in which the author provides a retrospective balance of the æknowledge creation projectÆ, as well as a prospective outlook for research in this field; before acknowledgements are made and references provided.

Steel for any large structure must be imported, the Hanyang works being entirely unable to supply local demand. The United States Steel Products Co. has warehouses and small stocks at Shanghai and at normal times there are heavy importations from Europe. It is difficult to obtain any accurate index of prices, but comparison of customs valuations with Pittsburgh quotations shows angles, bars and plates to have averaged $10 gold per ton higher in China in 1914, while on galvanized and tinned plates the excess was- $38 per ton. The margin since has been greater. Previous to the war little machinery was manufactured in China. There were shipyards at Shanghai and at Hong Kong which built a small number of engines, and small foundry and repair works are found at a number of ports. Their capacity was limited and the difficulties and delays incident to transport in China so numerous that in practice every important mine has a small foundry, boiler works, and machine shop. By 1959 the milling plant of Bicr oft Uranium Mines Ltd. had been in operation for two years. During this time many changes, both physical and chemical, had been made in an effort to improve plant efficiency. Investigational work had been facilitated greatly by the fact that the Bicroft mill consists to a large extent of two parallel circuits; however, the number of interrelated variables is great, and it is difficult to measure, let alone control, all of them simultaneously. The Bicroft mill staff feels that much progress has been made, but there is much yet to be done and many questions still to be answered. The Addendum outlines noteworthy developments to the fall of 1960. The property of Bicroft Uranium Mines is located in Cardiff Township in the Highlands of Haliburton County, southeastern Ontario, some 140 miles northeast of the city of Toronto and 70 miles due north of Lake Ontario. The ore-bearing dikes are classed as mafic. nonsegregated, syenite and granite pegmatite. Microline, microline perthite, quartz, sodic plagioclase, and pyroxene or biotite are the main constituents with uraninite, uranothorite, fluorite, titanite, cryolite, calcite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and molybdenite as important accessories. The mill was designed for a nominal capacity of 1000 tpd with all sections except grinding, leaching, and clarification capable of 1500 tons. Feed was entered to one mill unit on Oct. 29, 1956, and to the second parallel line on November 13. The total feed rate was at 1000 tpd on November 15. The first precipitate was produced on November 12. By August 1958 the average entry had been increased to 1410 tpd without the installation of any additional major equipment. The overall recovery has been greater than 93.0 pct on several months, but a recovery of 92.5 pct appears to be most economical. Operating time for eight months in 1958 has been 97.1 pct although all grinding mills were relined during this period. A generalized flowsheet is shown in Fig. 1 and the plant layout in Fig. 2. The ore is crushed in three stages to -3/8-in. and then is wet ground in two stages to approximately 50 pct -200 mesh. The pulp is thickened to 68 pct solids and agitated by air for 33 hr at a pH of 1.9 as maintained by the addition of 93 pct sulfuric acid. Separation of the uranium-bearing pregnant liquor from the residue is accomplished by five-stage countercurrent decantation (CCD), following which the liquor is clarified for removal of fine slimes. The clarified liquor is treated in the ion exchange equipment in which both the upgrading of the solution and the removal of some impurities is accomplished. Addition of magnesia to the high-grade eluate from ion exchange precipitates the uranium as sodium-magnesium diuranate. After being filtered and dried this precipitate is packaged in drums for shipment. The residue from CCD and the barren solution from ion exchange are neutralized by the addition of lime and pumped to the tailings disposal area. CRUSHING All crushing is done on surface in a conventional three-stage unit consisting of a 36x48-in. Birdsboro Buchanan jaw crusher, a 4 1/4-ft standard Symons cone crusher, and a 4-ft Symons shorthead. Both the two primary and the two secondary screens are 4X 8-ft Symons rod decks. Moisture content of the feed ranges from 3 to 4 pct. In the initial installation the primary screens were equipped with 5/16-in. rods at 1 1/4-in. spacing and the secondaries with 5/16-in. rods at 1/2-in. spacing. With this arrangement the average crushing rate was better than 180 tph. To reduce the work required of the grinding circuit as tonnage was increased, several changes were made in the crushing circuit. By September 1957, both secondary screens had been reduced to 3/8-in. spacing, and rod size had been reduced to 3/16-in. to provide increased open area. Average throughput was reduced to 160 tph. Later, 50 pct of one primary screen was decreased to 1/2-in. opening to better balance the load between the two cone crushers. In May 1958,

Roof bolting typically follows the extraction of a commodity to help keep the roof from collapsing. During 2004 to 2013, roof bolter operators had the highest number of machinery-related injuries, accounting for 64.7 percent, at underground coal mines. This paper analyzes U.S. roof bolter fatal and nonfatal lost-time injury data at underground work locations for all commodities from 2004 through 2013 and determines risk indices for six roof bolting tasks. For fatal and nonfatal incidences combined, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were bolting, handling of materials, setting the temporary roof support (TRS), drilling, tramming, and traversing. For fatalities, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were handling of materials, setting the TRS, bolting, drilling, traversing, and tramming. Age was found to be a significant factor. Severity of injury, indicated by days lost, was found to increase with increasing age as well as with increasing experience, largely due to the confounding of age and experience. The operation of the roof bolting machine used in underground mining should be a research priority given the high frequency and severity of incidents. The results also suggest that temporal factors may exist, so additional research is warranted to better understand these factors and potentially develop interventions. This research provides a datadriven foundation from which future research can be conducted for safety interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of incidences involving the roof bolter activities of bolting, handling of materials, and setting the TRS.
