"With increasing data volume, due to enhancing requirements for ground investigation programs for large construction projects, the demand for more efficient filing systems is more and more growing. Depending on the project we also have to use flexible systems to cope with varying data out of different lab and field tests.The chair for Engineering Geology at TUM is developing a web-based database solution to handle all project relevant data in a more appropriate way. We aim to optimize our data management to achieve a fast and easy way of collecting, documenting and analyzing our gained data. The second objective is to provide an easy access to our data for project partners across broadly distributed locations.This Database system consists of a PHP web interface and a MySQL database core. The current setup allows an online access via Internet (www). We are able to grant and constrain access to all data or only arrays of data with our user management system to guarantee the safety of project data and respect all rights and proprietorship. The database system is of modular design and consists of the following three base modules: module of general project data, module of laboratory data and user management module. At the current stage we are able to save and work with all usually generated specific values from unconfined compressive strength tests, brazilian tensile strength tests, point load tests, CERCHAR and LCPC abrasivity tests and ultrasonic tests. The user is able to perform a simple statistical analysis within our database (e.g. average calculation of one sample) and export data as csv or xls files for further analysis.For specific questions within projects we are able to deploy and integrate further modules in our database system. At this moment, we are developing an add on to use this database for different drill test analyses. One of the tools correlates drilling performance and drill head wear measured in the field with rock mechanical properties, and extrapolates the data to estimate the performance and wear in new projects. Today we are managing 90 projects with 550 samples and almost 1350 lab tests with the base module.In our contribution we aim to demonstrate an efficient way of data structuring using a relational database for laboratory and field testing data."

Marcona Corporation produces about 3.5 million long tons of iron ore pellets annually on its two travelling grate pelletizing machines at San Nicolas, Peru. During 1969, these pellets will be shipped to customers in four marketing areas--Japan, the United States, Europe, and South America. All of these sales are on the open market, and product quality is a major concern. Typical chemical, structural, and quality test results for Marcona pellets are given in Table 1. [ ]

The Escalante Silver Mine in Southwest Utah produces an average of 71.000 kg (2.3 million troy ounces) of silver dore annually. Precipitates from a cyanide leach circuit are treated by either acid leaching prior to fusion or a direct fusion with nitre. Process development, plant experience, and a comparison of both methods will be discussed. Plant experience from the custom treatment of a gold/silver precipitate containing matte producing elements will also be covered.

It's indeed a pleasure for me to speak to you today about the development and operation of large-scale surface coal mining projects in the western United States. It is an exciting story about American business working to solve a critical national problem -- the energy shortage -- through research, new technologies, financial innovation, and imaginative management. The North American Coal Corporation -- the second largest independent mining company and ninth largest United States coal producer -- is proud to be a part of this story. Our operations in North Dakota reflect the coal industry's Western activities. So, today, I would like to focus on our planned involvement in that state. I'll briefly survey why North American is developing large- scale surface mining in North Dakota, and I will outline the many problems associated with this coal development and how we are working to solve them. Finally, I will look at the financial and management techniques we are using to make it all work. In short, I'm going to present a case study of Western coal mining. Let's begin by looking at the reasons we are in North Dakota. The United States Bureau of Mines estimates that 44 per cent of the nation's total recoverable coal deposits underlie the three Northern Great Plains States of North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. We estimate that North Dakota alone has about 25 billion economically surface-mineable tons of coal with today's technology. North Dakota has the energy that could keep our factories running and our homes lighted In the years ahead.

Real-time monitoring of mine operating parameters is available at most mines. However, access to these data for an individual operation is typically underutilised by mine managers and technical personnel. Such monitoring systems are typically designed to provide data streams and alarms to a responsible person, but they are not utilised to extract underlying trends or correlate different data groups. Furthermore, multiple monitoring systems are usually implemented at a given site without interconnection between vendors’ systems or connection to any central management, and mine personnel are only exposed to a minimal subset of such data. Thus, it is not easy to analyse and correlate individual data streams and generate information to enhance day-to-day operational decision-making and improve safety and efficiency.This paper addresses the primary challenges associated with centralising data management and effecting greater utilisation of the vast amount of collected data, while at the same time reducing the time and effort required to manage such large data sets. Furthermore, it presents the conceptual design of a database application that can organise, present and analyse data collected by multiple sensors in different environments. The database is designed to operate in a passive manner so that active mine data management systems are not impacted. An example is given where this database is used for managing atmospheric data collected at an underground coalmine operation in the US. Mineral scale formation is prevalent in numerous mining operations. Such scale formation can occur in the direct-contact heat exchangers ahead of an autoclave. In these heat exchangers, the incoming slurry comes into contact with steam in a stage-wise fashion, which is re-circulated from the downstream flash vessels to heat the slurry in stages ahead of the autoclave. Calcium sulfate scaling causes severe problems in mining operations where increased temperatures are involved due to rising temperatures promoting calcium sulfate scaling through a decreasing solubility. In a number of these operations, the scale formation can occur in the presence of mineral solids, where fine-grained charged particles are at concentrations in excess of 35%. Scale prevention is not difficult in standard aqueous systems; however, the presence of solids leads to significant deficiencies in the prevention of scale due to the adsorption of the polymer onto the charge solids instead of the polymer interaction with the scale. Therefore, a technical solution to prevent mineral scale build up occurring in presence of pulp slurry in mining operations is needed. Several novel antiscalant technologies were developed and evaluated which provided a substantial improvement in the scale prevention in such systems.

"INTRODUCTION Industries around the globe have been making significant advancements in recent years due to innovations in automation technology. With the implementation of modern automation technology, professionals in process automation or plant operations can expect significant and exciting change, and the mining and mineral processing industries are no exception. From 2000 to 2010, the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) reported that an increased output and increased value of most metals has resulted in a rise in global metal and mineral process industries from $214 billion to $644 billion. [1] Since most productivity increases in mining and mineral process industries have been achieved through the ability to process lower grade ores with improved efficiency and larger equipment, these industries have begun to adopt advanced automation and control technologies. Despite a growth slow-down, the mining and mineral processing industries are poised for continued and sustainable growth and development due to an increasing demand for energy minerals and emerging technologies requiring minerals and metals previously not demand. However, as these industries becomes more automated, new challenges are arising on the horizon. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB John Payne from BP is credited with first using the term Demographic Time Bomb to describe the upcoming crisis in the process industry in finding experienced operations personnel. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years. This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, this implies that these skilled mining and mineral process professionals are an aging population with irreplaceable knowledge and experience that are expected to retire in the next 5-10 years. While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences."

Thank you Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen of SME-AIM? for this opportunity to talk to you about, one of the most interesting and challenging facets of our mining industry. Because the need was then -we built in 1964 what is still today, one of the most sophisticated AC mining machine simulators for this or any industry. It simulated the electrical controls and circuits of an AC shuttle car. The student activated the controls on the main console, which represented the elementary control and power circuits. Its accompanying slide-tape program, student manual and worksheets provided our customers with an effective and highly motivational means to teach their face mechanics: 1. practical AC circuit and motor theory 2. print reading 3. troubleshooting techniques Nearly 10,000 men have put in over 100,000 manhours of training on the AC panel and its DC counterpart. The DC panel was modeled after the 14BU10 Loader. The success of these larger panels pointed out the need in our industry for an orangized, basic electrical program designed around mining machinery components & circuits. But probably more importantly, they brought to light the tremendous thirst for upgrading by our industry's employees. We then turned our attention to developing programs around very basic panels. The resulting programs were designed also to assure maximum student involvement.

"A refinery expansion project for Marathon Petroleum Company in Southern Louisiana required existing medium to large pipe racks to be expanded for additional capacity. Foundation modifications were necessary in order to add levels to the existing pipe racks. New piles were added and existing pile cap foundations were expanded. Several different pile types were considered. Custom designed large diameter helical piles were chosen, because they can be installed quickly with low overhead restrictions, produce minimal soil spoils, and are cost effective. The load capacity required for piles was higher than typical, off-the-shelf helical piles. In particular, the lateral load capacity demand was high due to wind loads of a hurricane prone region. Methods used to design and size helical piles are summarized including capacity to torque ratio estimation for composite helical piles. Pile load testing was performed in order to confirm design capacities of the helical piles under axial and lateral loading. Measured axial and lateral deflections compared well with predicted values. This case history evaluates the effectiveness of modern helical pile design methods within the context of a real and practical example.INTRODUCTIONAs the capacity of modern installation equipment increases, large-diameter helical piles are being used to support higher loads in more diverse applications. Currently, large-diameter high-capacity helical piles are used for electrical power transmission, power generation, high-rise buildings, bridges, and industrial applications. This case study regards a 2.5-mile pipe rack modification project within an existing refinery. One of the many challenges for engineering and construction of refinery revamp projects is determining how to effectively expand the capacity of existing foundations for additional equipment, piping, and other facilities. Custom designed large-diameter helical piles provided an effective solution to the challenges faced when expanding the capacity of existing pipe racks."

"Dofasco began operations in 1912 as a steel foundry located in Hamilton, Ontario. Today, Dofasco is a fully integrated mill that manufactures hot rolled, cold rolled, galvanized and tinplate steels. Customers include the automotive, construction, tubular, manufacturing, appliance, packaging and steel ser-vice centre industries. Raw steel production and purchased semi-finished steel processed in1994 was 3.5 million net tonnes. Dofasco employs 7300 people at its Hamilton facility.Environmental management at Dofasco is guided by its environment policy and associated commitments. This paper discusses Dofasco’s responsibility for its products as it relates to these commitments. The topic of this article is the automation and robotization in refurbishment processes of industrial buildings. The need to mold these production spaces is quite universal. Particularly in the regions with a high industrial development and with a lack of buildable land, there is a need to convert this kind of spaces into an improved production system. The latest developments can be a useful tool for achieving a more efficient way of reforming this type of construction. On the one hand we have the digital or computerized 3D Laser Scanning (Computer Aided Measurement) that allows an accurate 3D modeling of the entire building. On the other hand, the project management using BIM (Building Information Modeling) could provide an easy design of each of the elements of the refurbishment. Finally, through the production of construction elements using robotics as jig or for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) we achieve a neat production of each element. How can be all those technologies applied in the refurbishment or expansion of industrial buildings? The research takes a first approach and analyzes industrial buildings that can be called generic or not specialized. To narrow the field of refurbishment, three major factors are defined. The first is to minimize the bill of the energy consumption of the buildings. This could be done either insulating the envelope, reducing the waste-volume to be conditioned climatically or creating facilities for energy production. The second is that the refurbishment or expansion of industrial buildings should try not to interfere on the production process that takes place in the building. In other words, the assembly of the elements in the construction site should be quick and easy, causing the least of disturbance at the workplace. Finally, the research makes an approach towards a robot integrated industrial or productive building .

Mining operations consume a considerable amount of energy, and while reduced energy consumption is desirable, it is not always clear how to achieve this goal. Understanding the opportunities to optimize energy consumption is crucial, and the key to understanding is visualization. One option is the Sankey diagram, which has been used for over 100 years to visualize the flow of energy, materials, or cost through various processes. However, there are drawbacks to this approach that must be addressed. In a Sankey diagram, each flow is represented by an arrow possessing a width proportional to the magnitude of the flow it represents. The diagrams show input flows, how energy is converted and into what form, and also output flows. As per the first law of thermodynamics, the total energy output is equivalent to the total energy input, so any energy that is not transferred to another process is considered to be wasted. These waste flows are depicted in Sankey diagrams and make it straightforward to associate energy sources, sinks and waste flows. Unfortunately, Sankey diagrams do not convey all information required to support practical decision making for redirecting individual energy flows. Based only on a Sankey diagram, it may become evident that a significant flow of waste heat is of the appropriate grade (temperature) and volume to meet an on-site heat demand currently being met with paid-for, possibly carbon intensive fuel. However without augmenting the Sankey diagram with 3D spatial, true geometric analysis, the practicalities of the concept or idea may not be fully appreciated. Another issue with a Sankey diagram is that the magnitude of the energy flowing between processes may have temporal fluctuation or variability on different timescales (diurnal, seasonal, interannual). Currently, Sankey diagrams only provide a static picture of energy conversion and consumption, so that, for example, 4 separate diagrams could have to be prepared for each season. A new energy flow visualization technique which we have called Sankey Trees has been developed. Process locations are defined within a 3D model of the site being studied, and the magnitude of the flow between each pair of processes considered is replaced with a time series. Branches of sustained and diminishing flows are represented through variation of the geometric properties of the branches of the trees. These branches are animated to indicate the direction of flow, and branch joints are used to indicate that a process is transporting one form of energy to multiple processes.

Industrial minerals are receiving increased attention by metals, coal and other companies seeking to diversify and stabilize earnings. Each industrial mineral has a unique set (and sub-sets) of business dynamics, however, and the diversity can present a bewildering maze to the corporate planner. Shrugging off this complexity and relying on serendipity for entry opportunities often results in unsuitable acquisitions. An effective alternative used in exploration can also be applied to strategic planning. By providing focus and direction, this flexible methodology can prevent wasting corporate resources on random pursuits and result in a quicker, more satisfactory achievement of diversification goals.

The past four years since the 2008 MINExpo have been a roller coaster ride for the mining industry, with highs and lows and everything in between. One of the natural consequences of this uncertainty has been a number of significant consolidations and mergers, and this trend has trickled down into the crushing industry. And while there have been some significant changes to this sector of the mining industry, many of the big players have weathered the storm. The following is a look at some of the mineral processing companies that will be at MINExpo. McLanahan Corp. McLanahan Corp. is an example of the changes in the sector. The crushing and grinding stalwart acquired Universal Engineering, expanding its traditional focus on soft mineral crushing to hard rock crushing. With lower and increasingly variable Fe grades in iron ore resources, the monitoring of Si, Al, Mg and other light elements to meet quality requirements is gaining importance in the iron ore beneficiation industry. The high cost per manual assay and associated manpower requirements often limit the frequency of shift composite samples and laboratory assays. Furthermore, the shift composite assays represent past performance of a plant but are not useful for immediate reactions to feed variations, detection of equipment malfunctions or process control. Automated online analysis of light elements radically reduces the cost per assay and provides repeatable, timely data for process analysis, control and optimisation.A light element online slurry analyser, based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) optical emission technique, will be presented. This paper discusses the analyser design for the iron ore industry and also reviews the performance of the analyser against the manual laboratory. Additionally operator safety, user friendliness and maintenance requirements are discussed.A case study will also be discussed in this paper. The sophisticated measurement technique has been implemented in an industrial automated analyser and sampling system to allow for slurry measurement for up to 12 sampling points. Mines today use various methods of mining to extract ore. Because of the dangerous nature of many of these processes, remotely controlled LHD machines are being used to extract the ore from the draw point. The remote control system, although being made safer all the time, has remained virtually unchanged for many years. The basic functionality is an operator switching the machine to remote control, getting out of the cab, walking up a stand, operating remotely, returning to the cab, switching to manual, driving manually, switching to remote, and switching to manual. It seems repetitive, and time consuming, does it not? Networking, convergence, video, voice, and data infrastructures, and other technologies are growing by leaps and bounds in virtually every industry and region, except for mining. From the comfort of the living room couch, a Canadian can play hockey online with full voice conversations over the Internet with someone in Russia in real time. Yet, a mine superintendent must jump through hoops to have a private conversation with the front line supervisor underground. "Is Joe around anywhere?" If Joe hears the message, he will respond. If not, who knows? Maybe he's hurt. Maybe he's not. Where is Joe? Nobody really knows, and that is scary. Today, surface knows that the workers disappeared into the cage at 7:00 a.m. They also know that the workers will probably and hopefully return at 3:00 p.m. Is there not a better way to handle this? With such a complex industry, it seems as if, for the most part, the introduction of new technology into mining has either been overlooked or has been met with some resistance. It is time to step back, look at the process, and see how it can be improved. Key areas of focus will be safety, productivity, dependability, and cost-effectiveness.

In 2020, Metcelerate launched its 20-month program for early career mineral processing engineers. The program helps develop critical technical skills in the workplace and is a tool to identify motivated engineers and change culture within teams. Learners cap their skills development by executing a technical investigation. This generates immediate value—a win-win outcome for learner and company.

The Dike and Eaton veins in Crittenden County, Ky. (fig. 1), are along northwesterly trending relief fractures that lie between two northeastward striking major faults - the Moore Hill and- the Levias, in Crittenden County, Ky. The veins contain small, narrow, irregular ore bodies of fluorspar with subordinate quantities of sphalerite and galena. Gravel fluorspar was found on the surface in the Eaton vein, and open-cut mining was in progress on the W. M. Conyer property about 1900. Discovery of fluorspar in the Dike vein came much later, about 1933, on the W. H. LaRue tract, but the principal production on the Dike vein started after the discovery of gravel spar in 1938 on the land of the P. J. Gilless estate. Production from the Eaton vein was estimated at 9,400 tons and that from the Dike vein at 15,700 tons, a total of 25,100 tons. A large part of this production was gravel fluorspar from within 50 foot of the surface. Beneath the gravel spar the veins are very narrow, averaging 2 to 2.5 feet in width, and the ore shoots are small. The deepest mine level was 140 feet below the surface, and the deepest shaft 150 foot. Orb was concentrated by log washer or sent unwashed to custom mills at Marion, Ky. about 6 miles distant.

The complexity of metallurgical processes in the non-ferrous metals industry. especially changes in the process conditions in combination with a diversity of metal processing furnaces, requires a precise knowledge of the system for the selection of refractory products. However, particular importance is still focused on the specific refractory consumption being as low as possible. The addition of recycling material with a high amount of impurities and the increase of low-grade ore concentrates used in the base-metals industry also entails a significant change of slag chemistries, process temperatures, etc., which influence the performance of already approved linings. This acknowledgement of process changes with decreased brick lifetimes provided the motivation for RHI AG to develop high-performance refractory bricks especially for non-ferrous metals applications. The internal laboratory tests with fayalitic slag showed very promising results compared with our approved magnesia-chromite bricks for this application. In order to identify suitable refractory products and to improve the life of the refractory lining, innovative product development has to be undertaken. In addition, the practical corrosion testing methods and facilities available within the RHI Technology Center, such as the induction furnace and the rotary kiln test equipment, allows the best possible understanding of brick wear at a laboratory scale. Based on the results of the test work, the optimal refractory solution can be recommended for a field trial at the customer?s site.
