THIS REPORT is not intended to be a ?comprehensive survey of the steel industry in Europe. For the past ten years the Ontario Research Foundation has been interested in several developments in the steel industry in Europe which it was felt would be of particular interest in Canada and might possibly find application in this country. This is an account of the present status of some of these developments. The economies of steel making in Canada are somewhat different than in the United States because of the nature of the market and the relative costs and availability of such raw materials as metallurgical coke and electric power. There are cases in Europe where a great deal of effort and money has been spent in trying to make steel profitably by methods which take advantage of locally available and cheap raw materials by modifying standard practices. ln cases wl1ere the investigations have been successful and the data are available to allow translation of the results into Canadian conditions, it is felt that such information may be of great benefit in the future in Canada and at !east should be known to all those in the steel industry in this country. The field to be covered in this report only comprises the steps from concentration and treatment of iron ores to production of iron and is only concerned with those commercially operating processes well known to us and judged to be of present interest in Canada.

"Dwindling commodity prices are forcing today’s mining operations to increase output. Sometimes the solution is to upgrade the existing infrastructure; however, in most cases it has to be achieved with the same or reduced workforce and with the same equipment capacity through improved process efficiency and higher uptime.Measure, Manage and Improveis the mantra for this years’ Mill Operators’ Conference and while this in most cases relates to the above process efficiency, Siemens has set its focus on the availability and uptime aspect since unscheduled downtime is one of the biggest threats to any grinding operation. Pinion misalignments, resonance, unbalance and bearing and gear meshing faults in geared trains, as well as long-term changes in the condition of the mechanical components or structures and auxiliary systems in gearless systems are the main reasons for unscheduled downtimes in today’s mill drive trains. Our paper outlines the efforts that have gone into adapting conventional condition monitoring methods in conventional, pinion driven mill drive trains as well as gearless systems to capture the gradual deterioration of wearing parts or structural changes in the drive train not only on fixed speed application but also on variable speed applications with multiple operating points. The paper further explores the use of condition monitoring systems as a tool to assess spare thermal motor capacity to potentially push equipment beyond its nameplate rating, along with the process that was followed to correlate measured frequency spectra and envelopes to ambient and load data to understand the kinematics of the drive train.Citation:Neurohr, M, Stratton, S and Roesch, T, 2016. U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers reviewed an in situ stress estimate developed from measurements of overcore strain taken at test sites on the 7300 and 7500 levels of the Star Mine near Mullan, ID. Although the field measurements of over coring strain were found to be useful, significant deficiencies were found in the stress estimation procedure. A new stress estimate was developed incorporating statistical methods and an improved understanding of stress concentration factors for interpreting overcore strains recorded by doorstopper' cells. Spatial variability of overcore strains and the implications for stress field variability were explored.

An investigation was undertaken to critically analyse the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete (FRS) for a variety of applications in large diameter shafts. Those applications included the use of FRS with or without the addition of subsequent rock bolting in the temporary support cycle prior to the installation of a permanent lining, most likely cast in situ concrete or as the final lining medium.Numerous authors have considered the early re-entry and strength characteristics of FRS in recent years. The current study has investigated the practical application of the recommendations of many leading authors in an endeavour to establish practical and acceptable risk-assessed procedures for the use of FRS for rapid, safe, efficient and cost-effective shaft sinking.Shaft sinking is regarded as a specialist and potentially higher risk activity due to the confined work environment, exposure to ground conditions and a high degree of manual handling associated with getting materials to the sinking face. The use of robotically applied FRS as a primary lining in shaft sinking has significant safety advantages in reducing manual handing associated with mesh safety support and bolting, as well as reducing direct exposure to ground conditions.The study involved both field testing and a literature review. The study established an initial set of criteria for the use of FRS in the development of large diameter shafts and demonstrated a number of scenarios where the technique of robotically applied FRS provided significant safety and cycle time advantages. Minerals are a fundamental component of the Nation" material and economic base. Without a continuous supply of minerals to meet growing and changing needs, the basic character of our society would be very different. The importance of minerals to the United States was reemphasized by the Congress in I970 when it enacted the Mining and Minerals Policy Act, which stated that it is the continuing policy of the Federal Government in the national interest to foster and encourage private enterprise in (I) the development of economically sound and stable domestic mining, minerals, metal and mineral reclamation industries, (2) the orderly and economic development of domestic mineral resources, reserves, and reclamation of metals and minerals to help assure satisfaction of industrial, security and environmental needs, (3) mining, mineral, and metallurgical research, including the use and recycling of scrap to promote the wise and efficient use of our natural and reclaimable mineral recources, and (4) the study and development of methods for the disposal, control, and reclamation of mineral waste products, and the reclamation of mined land, so as to lessen any adverse impact of mineral extraction and processing upon the physical environment that may result from mining or mineral activities.,.

Three trials with oxygen-enriched unheated blast air are described. The trials were conducted in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace located in Bruceton, PA. The first trial utilized moisture addition to the oxygenated blast. The second and third trial were conducted with natural gas injection. The test was basically a feasibility study and in that regard the practice was demonstrated to be feasible and also have possible advantages over hot blast operation. The testwork was conducted in 1964 and 1965 as part of a continuing study of iron making technology in cooperation with several North American Steel Companies.

Despite further declines in production for some producers, 1986 proved to be a landmark year for the asbestos industry. The key event was the adoption of The Asbestos Convention by the Inter- national Labour Organization (ILO) and its 150 member countries. The document, entitled "Safety in the Use of Asbestos", reaffirms the international consensus on the "controlled-use" approach to chrysotile asbestos regulation. The decision of the ILO has come at a critical point in time. It represents a major turning point and provides an important building block for the long term future of the asbestos industry.

UNDER the auspices of the Institute's Committee on Industrial Preparedness, a symposium was arranged for the Annual Meeting on the subject "Ores, Metals, and the War," with many well-known Government men and industrialists participating. Wilfred Sykes, president of the Inland Steel Co., of Chicago, presided, with C. K. Leith and Clyde Williams as vice-chairmen, Mr. Williams presiding over the latter part of the meeting. On the Auditorium stage in the Engineering Societies Building was a formidable corps of "experts," with an audience of several hundred to hear what they had to say and to ask questions.

Nowadays, small diameter tunnels are increasingly considered in pipeline projects as an alternative for sensitive crossings or when soil conditions limit the use of conventional pipeline installation methods like HDD. Safety concerns play a key role, especially for inner-city installations. Pipe jacked microtunnels and small segment lining tunnels can serve as casing tunnels if access is required during construction for the change of cutting tools in challenging ground conditions or for maintenance of the pipeline in operation. Small diameter tunneling solutions offer a high degree of flexibility for alignment design in terms of geology, length and radius.

The Cuyuna range in central Minnesota has been the source of substantial tonnages of, manganiferous iron ores for almost four decades. To Increase the Nation's self-sufficiency in manganese reserves, the Bureau of Mines initiated a comprehensive investigative program to determine and develop the potential manganese reserves in the region. In the course of compiling all available information on the Cuyuna range, the Scallop-Todd lease appeared to be an area having favorable possibilities for developing substantial reserves of manganese. Early drilling on this lease indicated considerable tonnages of material relatively high in manganese. More recent drilling substantiated the size of the deposit but Indicated lower manganese values. However, beneficiation tests of samples obtained from the recent drilling indicated that the material was amenable to concentration.

Fire safety requirements inside tunnels have become more demanding as tunnel designers consider the impact of potentially larger fires. Tunnel ventilation equipment is required to clear hot gases in the event of a fire. This is vital to maintain smoke free escape routes for people trapped in the tunnel and to facilitate safe access for emergency services. As the fire becomes larger, the temperature of clearing hot gases increases. Traditionally, engineers have taken into consideration gas temperatures of 250°C when designing tunnels. Because of larger fires, engineers must now design equipment to clear hot gas up to 400°C.Increasing the temperature of hot gases to 400°C requires tunnel ventilation equipment that goes beyond historic limits. As temperature rises, material strength reduces, consequently mechanically constraining fan aerodynamic performance. Developing tunnel ventilation equipment suitable for clearing hot gases at 400°C requires a fan technology that is more typical of industrial turbomachinery. The standards EN 12101-3:2002 and ISO 21927-3:2006 defi ne the necessary design criteria and testing methodologies to verify that a range of tunnel ventilation equipment is capable of extracting hot gases.This paper describes the process by which the authors certified in accordance with EN 12101-3 and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 21927-3 a range of powered ventilators suitable for clearing smoke and hot gases at 400°C for two hours. Proving the high temperature capability of the new range provided a challenge as a consequence of the large physical sizes and high motor powers involved. Additionally, the need to install vertically, as well as horizontally, imposed high thrust loads on motor bearings, further complicating both mechanical design and testing. The paper presents the methods by which the authors overcame these challenges.

The lead and copper smelting processes employed by Mount Isa Mines Limited, Mount Isa, Australia, are used to illustrate an operating viewpoint of some problems and solutions encountered in existing commercial sulphide smelters. The smelting processes discussed; include updraught sintering, blast furnace and reverberatory smelting, and converting. Selected examples are given of methods implemented, and options available, to improve the productivity and efficiency of conventional smelting processes.

As an alternative to heavy water cooling, reactors cooled by organic liquids are being actively developed in Canada under the sponsorship of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. One of the areas in which development has been required is that of core materials. The factors affecting the selection of fuel canning and coolant tube materials are discussed. It is shown that S.A.P. is a potentially attractive material for these applications. The fabrication of fuel sheathing is discussed. Difficulties met due to large inclusions and blistering due to high hydrogen contents have been overcome by magnetic separation and vacuum sintering of the powders. High-quality tubes can now be produced by extrusion to finished size. A study has been made of the mechanical properties of fuel-sheathing tubes and bar stock. The stress rupture properties of the tubes subjected to uniaxial and biaxial stress have been determined. The biaxial stress tests were performed by internal pressurization. "In recent years operators of brown-ore mines have shown increasing interest in .the reclamation of ore heretofore lost in tailing ponds. In January and February.1945 the author made a preliminary survey of the ponds in the Russellville district, Franklin County, Ala. The Russellville district (fig. 1) was chosen for the preliminary work because it contains many large ponds in a comparatively restricted area. All important properties in the district were visited with Charles R. Wilson of Russellville, who has been familiar with the Franklin County brown-ore industry since 1890; with Edmund Craddock and W. S. Blackburn, managers of the two washers now operated near Russellville by Shook & Fletcher Supply Co., and with S. A. Britton, manager of the Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Co. washer. The larger ponds were measured roughly and tonnages estimated. and samples taken from different areas were analyzed and beneficiated at the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines; Tuscaloosa, Ala.The ponds explored were the Sloss No.1 (Ensley); the Sloss No. 8, and the Sloss No. 4-5, which are among the largest in the district and so located, within an area of .three square miles (see fig. 2), that ore from all of them could be-treated,one centrally located washer.Actual work was begun on May 9. Between that date and June 30, when field work was completed, 246 holes in ponds were drilled and sampled, and 15 additional holes were put down primarily to test the drill .in different types of ground with a view to its possible utilization in other types of prospecting. Samples from all holes were analyzed for iron content; samples from 13 holes were sized and analyses made for each size fraction, and six large samples have been composited for beneficiation tests.Brown iron ore has been mined in the Russellville district since 1815, when the first blast furnace in Alabama was built in NW1/4 sec. 10, T. 7 S., R. 12 W., about 3 miles southwest of Russellville (19).-J The furnace was abandoned before the Civil War, and mining continued on a small scale until 1888, when Enoch Ensley began to mine the ridge between Russellville and Pain Creek. His first washer, Ensley No. 1, was about 300 feet south of the junction of the present Tharptown road with the Waco spur of the Southern Railway."

In January 1993, Pyramid Resources began implementation of a supervisory expert control system at a U.S Cu concentrator. The objective of this control system was to improve plant profitability through unit operation optimization and integration. This paper documents the key aspects of the project, including: economic and associated benefits, system architecture, concepts of implementation, process control strategies, practical aspects of implementation and conclusions. The implementation of expert control at this concentrator has resulted in an estimated benefit of $50,500 per day. This is a net result of improved tonnage, reduced reagent consumption, improved concentrate grade and reduced energy per ton produced.

A number of columbium and tantalum alloys were investigated to determine their suitability for use at elevated temperatures . Columbium-vanadium , tantalum-vanadium , and tantalum-hafnium alloys , and also columbium- 10 wt pct titanium alloys modified with additions of 0.1 to 2 mole pct ZrO2 , TiO2 , ZrB₂ , TiB , ZrC, or TiC were prepared and examined . Workability , tensile properties , and oxidation resistance were tested . Of the columbium alloys studied , the columbium- 12 at . pct vanadium exhibited the best properties ; it compared closely with the columbium- 10 at . pct vanadium alloy studied in a previous investigation.

THE discovery of oil in 1901 on the Spindletop dome, Texas, inaugurated a new industry on the Gulf Coast, an industry which has grown with the discovery of successive fields, until today it engages the services of thousands of workers and employs enormous capital. New fields are being discovered from time to time and doubtless some still remain to be found, though of late years discoveries have become more infrequent. Nowadays several hundred dry holes are drilled each year in a fruitless and blind effort to discover new fields, for as yet geologic science has developed no effectual method of locating the coastal oil deposits in advance of drilling. Moreover, despite the occasional discovery of new fields, the total production of the Gulf Coast is today no greater than it was in 1906, for the added production of the new fields has been offset by the rapid decline and more or less complete exhaustion of some of the older ones. Careful geologic work within the fields has in some cases increased the production temporarily, but has developed no really new supplies. The Gulf Coast oil industry seems to have passed its period of greatest expansion and to be declining at a fairly steady rate, and this condition is naturally viewed with alarm by the more farsighted operators. In my opinion, the time has come for the adoption of radical and aggressive methods of prospecting, and a fraction of the money wasted yearly in drilling shallow wells in hopeless locations might well be devoted to this purpose. Geochemical prospecting seeks hidden mineral deposits by sampling for variations in the chemical composition of naturally occurring materials. Usually the samples are of soils and other products of weathering and erosion—surface materials extremely susceptible to contamination by human activities. Except when a survey is conducted well away from populated areas, contamination is an ever-present hazard. The program's success is particularly endangered when the contaminants are the elements sought; if these occur erratically throughout an area, spurious anomalies completely unrelated to mineralized areas can be formed. Evenly distributed contamination can be dangerous too, if it raises the background to such a level that true anomalies can no longer be easily detected. Suppose, for example, that in an area where the lead background is 20 parts per million the soil over a lead vein contains 1000 ppm of lead. Here the contrast would be 50 to 1, which is very satisfactory for geochemical surveying. Now if 1000 ppm of lead from some source were added evenly to the soil in this area, the contrast would be reduced to about 2 to 1, and the anomaly would no longer be readily detectable because a threshold of significance twice the value of the background is the minimum generally used for interpreting geochemical data. Of the many possible sources of contamination, probably most important are smelter fumes, which may distribute large quantities of metal contaminants over many square miles of ground. For several reasons, the investigation reported here was begun in the Coeur d'Alene district in northern Idaho: 1) a lead smelter has been operated in this district since 1917 and an electrolytic zinc plant since 1928, and presumably the contamination patterns are strongly developed; 2) to evaluate the usefulness of certain geochemical techniques, V. C. Kennedy and S. W. Hobbs of the USGS had already studied the distribution of copper, lead, and zinc in the soils (both in background areas and other veins) and in the water and plants, providing a criterion for measuring the magnitude and effect of soil contamination; 3) one of the economically important parts of the district lies south of the South Fork of Coeur d'Alene River and within a radius of five miles of the reduction plants near Smelterville (Fig. 1). In this area, and in the entire district, conventional methods of prospecting are hindered by heavy vegetation and thick soil cover, and the possibility of contamination by smelter fumes has discouraged geochemical prospecting. Should data reveal that geochemical prospecting could be done successfully in such an area, a particularly useful tool would be available to mining companies and prospectors searching for concealed orebodies in this economically important part of the district. The field work on which this report is based was done from July 28 to 31, 1955. It should be emphasized that this was reconnaissance study only, and therefore far from exhaustive. Previous Investigations in U. S. : The first geochemical survey known to have been affected by contamination was conducted in 1940—a geobotan-ical reconnaissance made in the Michigan copper district by a private company. Geologists found striking variations in the copper content of oak and maple leaves, but unfortunately the high copper isograds of the study seemed to be related more to the Calumet and Hecla copper smelter fall-out than to mineralized ground.' The leaves of one oak tree near the smelter contained 0.4 pct Cu. Similar contamination was reported by Clarke (Ref. 2, p. 41), who conducted experimental geochemical soil and botanical surveys at Ray, Ariz. He found that the leaves of oak trees growing in unmineralized ground near Superior, Ariz., contained more copper than the leaves of oak trees growing on the capping of the Ray orebody and attributed this fact to contamination from the fumes of the Magma smelter at Superior. According to H. E. Hawkes,3 soils and stream sediments in the Superior area are also severely contaminated. Hawkes' work there has shown a copper content averaging 0.5 pct in the surface horizons of soils within one mile of the smelter stack. Samples taken only a few inches below the anomalous surface samples showed only background copper values. In 1950 L. C. Huff' of the USGS made a geochemical survey in an area near Jerome, Ariz., and found considerable zinc and copper in the soils over unmineralized basalt close to Clarkedale, Ariz., and over limestone close to Jerome. As the amounts were notably greater than could reasonably be expected to be derived from the underlying rocks, Huff suspected airborne contamination from the smelter at Clarkedale. Description of Area: The area sampled in detail (Fig. 1) for the study presented here is one of strong relief. The dominant watercourse is the westward-flowing South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River. East of Kellogg the South Fork flows in a rather narrow canyon, but its valley floor widens considerably to the west where much of the flood plain is covered by an extensive veneer of mining, milling, and smelting debris. In a Bureau of Mines investigation of the dynamic compaction of mine hydraulic backfills, two basic forms of mechanical vibration inducers were used and compared for effectiveness of compaction. Internal compaction, using concrete probe vibrators of various sizes, and external compaction, using plate vibrators} were studied and evaluated for use in underground stopes. An aluminum plate, which was light and displaced sufficient volume to remain afloat in fluid fill, and a steel plate were both used in the external compaction tests. Efficiency of compaction was better in studies conducted with internal probe vibrators. Tests were conducted in an underground backfilled stope with three different-sized probe vibrators (2-, 4-, and 6-inch-diameter) to determine an approximate area of influence. Results showed the areas of influence to be approximately 3, 4, and 5 feet in diameter, respectively, for the three different probes. Physical properties of hydraulic slurries were determined; preferred grain-size distributions, water exudation properties, and water contents of hydraulic slurries are reported. The best compaction results were obtained with moderately well-graded, fully saturated backfills, with slow rates of water exudation, which were capable of remaining in a semifluid state during the compaction process.

This report summarizes the work done by the Koppers Company, Incorporated, in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines on the commercial evaluation of the primary low-temperature tars produced from Texas lignite in the Rockdale, Tex., plant of the Aluminum Company of America in conjunction with the Texas Power and Light Company. The interest of the Bureau of Mines in this project is twofold. First, through its cooperative agreement with the Texas Power and Light Company the Bureau has assisted in the technical design and practical operation of the prototype, externally heated, entrained-state carbonizer for producing char for electric-power production and for primary low-temperature tar. Second, the first successful operation of the prototype carbonizers employing the Bureau of Mines-Parry process on lignitic coal in 1953-54 led to the production of large quantities of primary lignitic tar, concerning which too little was known or had heretofore been published in this country.
