The Enaex Mining Technical Solutions (EMTS) team, in partnership with the Anglo American Iron Ore Brazil drilling and blasting team, has developed a study aiming to optimize the blast design applied at the Minas-Rio project. The study consists of modeling the dynamic behavior of one lithological domain to determine the best configuration of drilling pattern, charge configuration, timing and sequencing of the blast designs applied at the mine in this particular rock.

As part of other work related to the studies of kinetic factors that influence the flotation of specific sulphide minerals, specially designed kinetic flotation experiments at Cominco included work done on -65 + 100 mesh and -100 + 150 mesh, high purity galena. The flotation collector used was sodium isopropyl xanthate containing radioactive sulphur-35. Radiation monitoring of the galena fractions from stage flotation tests indicated that the adsorbed radioactive xanthate was uniformly distributed among the floated fractions and the non-floated, or residual portion of the galena. This anomalous behaviour could not be correlated to changes in Seebeck coefficients, to lattice distortions, or to the nature of the mineral surface as revealed by infrared spectroscopy and by microscopic measurements.

The Government of New South Wales has granted approval for Hunter Valley Aluminium Pty., Ltd" and Alcan Australia Ltd. to proceed with the building of an aluminum smelter at Lochinvar and the expansion of a smelter at Kurri Kurri. Construction of the smelters is expected to start as soon as the consortium is finalized in early 1982. The smelters are part of a plan to increase Australia's aluminum capacity fivefold to 1.5 million tons by the mid-1980's. CHILE Construction of a $61 million lithium carbonate plant in northern Chile will be started in early 1983 by Sociedad Chilena del Litio Ltdao Production is scheduled to begin in 1984 with an initial capacity of 6,350 tons of lithium carbonate produced from a brine deposit. The firm is owned 55% by Foote Mineral Company, of Exton, Pennsylvania, and 45% by Corporacion de Fomento de la Produccion-CORFO.

"IntroductionAsbestos as received by the manufacturer of asbestos products is •in the •form of either crudes or milled fibres processed to different degrees of texture. Frequently, the manufacturer finds that l:ihe fibres as he buys them are not adaptable to his plant processes, and, therefore, it is necessary for him either to contact the mine supplying the material and request a specific texture for the :fibre or to reprocess the fibre in his own plant.When the mine or mill manager is requested to change his milling equipment to produce a special grade of fibre with a specific texture, he would like to comply. However, if he began to make special fibre grades for each customer, he would be in the position of constantly rearranging his milling technique, adding more equipment, or building a new mill. In the end, his mill would he producing hundreds of different fibre grades of varying degrees of texture, which is a difficult accomplishment if he desires to maintain any quantity of production."

Maptek, an international development software company, released version 3.2 of its Vulcan three-dimensional mining and geological software package. This latest release is expected to give clients better graphics performance and improved overall solutions. In addition, the company also released the NT version of Vulcan for Unix and personal computers. More than 800 code changes have gone into the 3.2 release, the Lakewood, CO-based company said. Many of these changes were in response to requests from Maptek's customers. Others have been motivated internally by the company to achieve better performance in its Envisage graphics interface. The introduction of hot keys and user-defined menus makes Envisage a more flexible interface and a more productive working environment. A new animation option provides new ways to enhance the organization and display of data. The animated data can include point, string, grid, triangulation and photographic-draped data. The shaft-mapping facility is also included in version 3.2. It enables the cylindrical view of the shaft to be unwrapped and displayed on the screen while the data remains in its true world coordinates. Major upgrades to Vulcan include underground blast design and geotechnical modules. The new blast design module allows the user to develop a ring design in any plane defined by the stope layout. Radial and offset holes can be developed. User-friendly editing tools make adjustments to the initial design a simple task. The user defines the plotting and reporting of rings and plot style templates allow flexibility in reporting. New features in the geotechnical toolbox include options to create daylight windows and pitch lines on the stereo nets. Geotechnical databases can be directly updated from the interpretation of the stereo net. Direct annotation of the symbols on the net is now possible and the stereo net display can be customized. Improvements to the documentation and links within the text have made the on-line help easier to navigate. Maptek also released the NT version of Vulcan soft- ware. The comprehensive design of the software pack- age for Unix and personal computers provides a three-dimensional geological modeling and mine planning system within a natural graphics environment. Users who require the power to manipulate extra- large and complex data sets will still be served by the Unix platform. Users who handle small-to-large datasets can now choose between Unix and personal computer platforms. The NT version will appeal primarily to companies that already have a personal computer network. Response to industry feedback was the basis for developing the NT version. "We want to ensure that our clients receive the optimal product for their needs," said Nicolas Simon, vice president of Maptek in North America. Some advantages of the NT version include: ? Most mining professionals are familiar with the personal computer platform. ? All of the familiar personal computer tools are now available to Vulcan users. ? Resource modeling tools that previously required the powerful Unix workstations have been brought into the personal computer environment. This will help mining companies save money. The Bureau of Mines investigated selective extraction of Au and Ag from a low-grade Au ore containing Hg. Gold and silver were extracted from the ore in cyanide slurries, and Hg extraction was suppressed with sodium or calcium sulfide. Maximum Au extraction and minimum Hg extraction were obtained using solutions containing 0.34 lb NaCN/ton of solution. Increasing the cyanide concentration increased Hg extraction without increasing Au extraction. Mercury extraction from the ore was suppressed with 0-5 to 2.9 Pb CaS/lb Kg in the ore. Gold-to-mercury ratios of 100:1 to 400:1 were obtained in the leach solution, and on the activated carbon in a CIP circuit.

"Under certain conditions useful gravity information of a reconnaissance nature can be obtained with-out measuring elevations by spirit level surveys on the ground. Gravity surveys can become part of a practical exploration program where high cost and slow progress previously hindered their utility. The advantages of the new elevation procedures are realized mainly in remote areas, in areas where ground transportation is slow and difficult and on surveys where the station spacing is large in comparison with the distance of the average optimum level shot. To utilize the advantages, transportation by helicopter or light plane is usually necessary. Methods of obtaining elevation control without leveling include: barometric altimeter survey; photogram-metric -APR spot determinations; methods involving the measurement of gravity gradients. The accuracies of these methods have been tested and compared with the normal accuracy of level surveys. It is felt that each method has its place in reconnaissance gravity work, particularly in the open areas of Northern Canada."

This Bureau of Mines report tabulates data on nitrogen-gas reservoirs and isolated occurrences of inert gases in several Williston basin oilfields. Recoverable reserves of nitrogen gas in the Minnelusa nitrogen interval within the areas of five oilfields on the Nesson anticline in North Dakota are estimated at about 1.27 trillion standard cubic feet, based on computer analyses of logs from over 300 wells. This volume of nitrogen represents a large source of high-pressure inert gas and warrants consideration of possible application in oil-production operations. Drill-stem tests made in two of the fields indicated that nitrogen can be produced at rates up to 28 million cubic feet per day.

ZrB2 and TiB2 are significant metal borides. They are being used in various industrial areas from space technology to nuclear industry owing to their physical properties such as high melting point, high thermal/electrical conductivity and low density. Present study was conducted in two main stages: self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reactions and leaching. ZrO2, TiO2, B2O3 were used as starting material and Mg was used as a reductant to produce ZrB2-TiB2 powders via SHS. Therefore, it was aimed to determine production parameters, leaching conditions and comprehensive examination of final product features. The samples were characterized by using chemical analysis (AAS), XRD, XRF and SEM/EDS techniques.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated the equilibrium of the system potassium carbonate (K2C03) potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) potassium bisulfide (KHS) carbon dioxide (C02) hydrogen sulfide (H2S) water (H20). Partial pressures of hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and water vapor were measured at 70° to 130° C. over solutions of 20-, 30-, and 40-percent-equivalent potassium carbonate containing from 20 to 3,000 grains of equivalent hydrogen sulfide per gallon of solution. This study was made to obtain equilibrium data for evaluating the feasibility of using solutions of hot potassium carbonate for removing, hydrogen sulfide from gas mixtures. The equilibrium partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide may be correlated with the ratio of the molal concentrations of the solutes (KHC03) (KHS)/ (K2CO3). The relationship is shown graphically for the 30- and 40-percent solutions. Once this ratio is determined, the partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide can be obtained from the curves. The equilibrium data show that effective removal of both carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide can be achieved simultaneously with hot solutions of potassium carbonate.

The use of thermal integrity testing to verify the quality of deep foundations has increased significantly in the UK and other world markets over the last 5 years. The introduction of distributed fibre optic sensing to this field has broadened the range of applications in which it can be deployed and the types of foundations which can be tested. This paper presents how fibre optic sensing technology can be successfully deployed in the construction environment the range of foundation techniques to which it can be applied. Alongside developments in the practical aspects of thermal testing, progress has been made in establishing assessment criteria which can be used to evaluate the results. This paper presents recent examples of comparative studies on foundations which include both thermal integrity testing, cross hole sonic logging and intrusive coring. The use of distributed strain measurement during pile load testing presents an alternative means to verify the assessment criteria used for integrity testing. This new approach can achieve comparable results to foundation exhumation or intrusive investigation and at a fraction of the cost. This paper presents the findings of several such studies, highlighting the benefits and opportunities for future improvement of the method.

A coal dust explosion is one of the most significant risks in the harsh and complex environment of an Underground Coal Mine (UCM). Reviewing literature, regulations and existing systems surrounding explosive dust management shows that there have been few advancements in managing this risk over the past 90 years. Legislation has remained relatively stagnant and minimal systems are implemented in the real world that can simplify, standardise and improve the effectiveness of UCM explosive dust management. To help bridge this gap, Corehesion, in collaboration with an UCM has designed, developed and implement an Explosive Dust Risk Mitigation System (EDRMS) utilising components of Business Intelligence (BI) that is capable of real-world use in industry. To do this the existing explosive dust management process at the associated research mine was evaluated to form high-level and detailed design requirements, focusing on digitally simplifying the procedure, not replicating it. The system was then iteratively and incrementally developed and implemented at the research mine to commence real-world use. The developed BI platform is compared with the existing process to highlight the advancements in performance transparency, efficiency and optimisation of UCM explosion mitigation. This comparison and evaluation of the real-world system implementation at the research mine demonstrate its success in automating procedure steps, providing a readily accessible source of data and enabling a proactive approach to planning and managing explosion risk mitigation. In addition to improvements just for the research mine, this EDRMS created directly address many Queensland regulatory audit findings. By finalising the total system and making the highlighted changes for standardisation, this BI system will have the adaptable capabilities for implementation across the UCM industry. As accurate data availability improves at UCMs, further work can be done to improve the systems’ optimisation techniques and integration of other risks.

Tyrone-a complete mining and concentrating facility built by Phelps Dodge Corp.-straddles the Continental Divide where surface water on either side flows in opposite directions although all water is taken from and returned on the northwest side of the Divide. At the outset, Tyrone was saddled with a problem of an adequate water supply, and the Gila River some 23 miles distant appeared to be the logical source. This in itself presented a major obstacle to Phelps Dodge because of the distance water had to be pumped and because of an adverse head which had to be overcome between the Gila River and the two 4-million-gal-capacity terminal water supply tanks at the mill. Having acquired water rights on the Gila River and in order to control the seasonal fluctuations in water volume, the company built the Bill Evans, off stream, earth-filled dam. This reservoir will contain 2100 acre-ft of water when full and it was constructed by the Hamilton Construction Co. for Phelps Dodge. The dam impounds fresh water for the Tyrone plant's use and four vertical turbine pumps (4500 gpm each) lift the water 275 ft from the Gila River into the reservoir. Since construction, Phelps Dodge has optioned the lake to the New Mexico State Game Commission for recreational purposes. In addition to the lake, land around the reservoir has been optioned to the State Game Commission for public use. The lake has already been stocked with trout and by next summer some keepers should be available for the taking.

The orebodies of the Giant Yellow-knife mine occur in zones of schist, in an assemblage of typical Precambrian greenstones which form part of the Yellowknife Greenstone Belt. One of the most interesting problems at the mine concerns the fold-like attitudes assumed by the schist zones. The internal structure of the zones and orebodies provides much evidence of folding. A logical conclusion would be that the zones represent a single horizon which has been folded and drag-folded in the ordinary course of mountain building. However, surface mapping, and correlation of certain marker horizons, in underground work, indicate a homo-clinal succession of steeply dipping flows. If this concept of the geology is correct, the zones must cross-cut the regional strike at a small angle and, in the over-all aspect, the regional dip at a large angle. A mechanical interpretation of the zone structure is presented as a suggestion for the present until new evidence is found.

"SAG mill liners are designed for protecting the mill shell and providing lifting power for ore charge and grinding media. Due to the impacts from the charge and the grinding media, the liner experiences dimple, plastic deformation, strain hardening, fatigue, peening and final failure. Because of the collisional environment directly measuring such dynamical loads is extremely difficult if not impossible. In this study we tried to evaluate the liner failure risk by simulating the collisions of solid particles with mill liner using Discrete Element Method (DEM). DEM simulation has been proved to be a very useful tool in evaluation of granular flow and its impacts on the solid structure. But there are certain limits in DEM coherently, such as the number of solid elements, the computer runtime, etc. Here we first present the general feature of the particle-liner collision in terms of impact force and collision energy. Then the effects of parameter selection is discussed. Our simulations show the fatal collisional event of huge impact force is very rare and the collisional events of low impact is much more frequent. The fatal event may contribute most to the liner failure. The rarity of the fatal events may be missed in a short runtime simulation. This technical challenge combined with lacking of criterion to evaluate varying impact loads in fatigue problems may further complicate the evaluation. Should we use the largest impact force alone or we should use the more frequent events is an open question and requires more effort. In order to evaluate the quality of liner design, we proposed a relative comparison method. In the end we show the implication and application of this method in liner optimization by a work example. In particular, the effects of the charge level of grinding balls and their size on the operation performance is presented.INTRODUCTION Grinding is one of the most important and expensive steps of mineral processing. A variety of grinding mills such as rod mills, ball mills, semi-autogenous (SAG) mills and autogenous (AG) mills are being utilized for comminution of mineral ores (Gupta & Yan, 2016). Up to today, SAG mills and AG mills have been widely used to reduce operation costs and increase throughput. In an AG mill, a rotating drum throws larger rocks of ore in a cascading motion which causes impact breakage of larger rocks and compressive grinding of finer particles. Unlike AG mills, SAG mills use steel grinding balls to break ores of size quite small such that they cannot be easily broken in AG mill. SAG mill liners are designed for protecting the mill shell and providing lifting power for ore charge and grinding media. Due to the impacts from the charge and the grinding media, the liner experiences dimple, plastic deformation, strain hardening, fatigue, peening and final failure. Quality and performance of SAG mill liners play a fundamental role to enhance efficiency of grinding mills, because failure of liners is the major cause for unexpected breakdown (Banisi, Hadizadeh, Mahmoudabadi, & Eilkhany, 2006)."

"The International Cyanide Management Code (the Code) is a voluntary industry program for gold miners and associated cyanide transporters and cyanide producers. By becoming a signatory, a company commits to follow the CodeÆs principles and implement its standards of practice.Signatories are required to undergo an initial certification audit within three years and a recertification audit every subsequent three years. Recertification audits evaluate compliance over the preceding three-year period. This approach presents a number of challenges. Golder Associates has undertaken in excess of 75 initial certification audits and 25 recertification audits; more than any other audit firm. This paper outlines some of the challenges identified and lessons learnt from the recertification audit process. Central to the process is the challenge for organisations to maintain commitment to compliance over the full three-year period and effectively address deficiencies or non-conformances that may have occurred during that period in a prompt manner.The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) provides guidance in evaluating deficiencies or non-conformances, which requires consideration of the æcauseÆ, ædurationÆ and æongoing compliance effortsÆ and an assessment of the concept of ægood faithÆ in response actions. This report presents the results of experiments to evaluate different types of mine fire sensors in an underground mine environment using a commercially available atmospheric monitoring system. To determine how well carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors respond for purposes of fire detection, experiments were conducted using test fires of different mine combustibles and for both flaming and nonflaming combustion. The experiments were designed to assess the response of fire sensors to different contaminants and different contaminant levels produced from the test fires. The experiments were performed in the Safety Research Coal Mine at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Bruceton Research Facility in the presence of an average ventilating air velocity of 1.6 m/s (315 fpm). Five fire sensor stations were located downstream of the test fire at fixed locations, with each sensor station consisting of four sensors: a CO fire sensor and three different smoke sensors, of which two were evaluated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for intrinsic safety and the third was used extensively in underground mines overseas but not evaluated by MSHA for intrinsic safety. All four sensors were mounted near the center of the entry and in the upper onethird of the entry height. A UL-listed combination ionization and photoelectric smoke sensor was mounted near the roof at the first sensor station and its responses were compared against the responses of the four CO and smoke fire sensors. Sensor response data, contaminant travel times, and the impact of fire on the existing ventilation flow are discussed as they apply to earlywarning fire detection. Of significance in the analysis is the need for performance standards for mine fire sensors in order to provide for consistent and timely early warning of developing fires.

A multimine mineral value chain (MVC) consists of multiple mines in the upstream supplying raw materials to multiple destinations in the downstream. The short-term mine production scheduling problem of a multimine MVC aims to determine the optimal extraction sequence and destination allocation of blocks from all the mines collaboratively to meet the quality and quantity requirements of all the processing plants in each period, subject to all relevant technical and operational constraints of the mining system. It is carried out at shorter scales of days/weeks/months under the purview of long-term production scheduling. An optimal short-term production schedule for MVC involving multiple mines that share the same infrastructure (processing units, stockpiles and waste dumps) requires coordination across the network of mines. Optimizing the short-term production schedules independently at each mine fails to capture the benefit of collaboratively generating schedules for all the mines, resulting in suboptimal schedules. Additionally, in short-term production scheduling, the operations are modeled in greater detail with additional decision variables and constraints to model the more complex multimine MVC situations. This makes the large-scale instances of the problem computationally intractable for standard mixed-integer programming (MIP) solvers. This work presents a customized genetic algorithm (GA)-based heuristic approach to obtain near-optimal solutions to the industrial-scale instances of the short-term production scheduling problem of multimine MVC within a reasonable computation time.

[For a year or more, statements have appeared in the technical press, and Especially in various trade journals, indicating that valuable metals such as gold, silver, platinum, and other rare metals, have been found and also have been successfully extracted from oil shales. These reports stated tat decarbonization and special methods of chlorination treatment, leaching and subsequent Precipitation, also cyanidation followed by table concentration of the residues after cyanidation, all indicated that told ad silver and other metals could be, and were, successfully recovered. Such articles have caused much misunderstanding, and as the correctness of some re of the statements made in them were questioned by some of the technical journals and by various chemists and metallurgists, an investigation of the subject. was begun by the metallurgical division of the Bureau of Mines, in order, if possible, to determine to what extent, if any, metals of value do occur in oil shales, and if so, the feasibility of attempting their recovery by tie processes said to have been used for teat Purpose. Inasmuch as the Bureau's station at Salt Lake City is investigating the recovery of oil from oil shales, the investigation of too recovery of metals from oil shales was assigned to my direction as superintendent 'of that station. An agreement had been entered into with the owner of m extensive oil shale deposit in Wyoming whereby I would personally collect the samples' of shales for use in the investigation.]

"The use of permanent stainless steel cathodes for electrorefining and electrowinning of cathode copper had been introduced to the market long time ago and now is a well-accepted technology worldwide. During the last decades, the Chinese copper refinery industry had been growing rapidly and many large scaled production plants had been built. In the modern refineries, permanent stainless steel cathodes are introduced and used instead of traditional starter sheets. The most common steel grade used is austenitic stainless steel S31603 (316L/1.4404), while both S30403 (304L/1.4404) and N08904 (904L/1.4539) have been used depending on the actual working conditions, especially with regarding corrosion environment. While 316L permanent cathode functions well in many plants, different kind of problems, such corrosion and deformation, have been reported. There is therefore an increased need for more suitable material. New stainless steels, such as duplex stainless steels, with better properties have been tried and introduced into the application of permanent stainless steel cathode with satisfied results. The article introduces first the Chinese copper refinery industry and properties of duplex stainless steel in general, and then describes the development of using permanent duplex stainless steel cathode, including the actual working conditions, production of cathode sheets as well as the experiences of application in details. After more than one year’s usage, the advantages of permanent duplex stainless steel cathodes are clear seen.INTRODUCTIONChina has become a major player in the international copper market, accounting for around 40 percent of global refined copper demand. Despite the slowdown of the Chinese economy, the consumption of copper products will still increase, but with a medium and/or low growth which will be the new situation for the coming years. The average growth rate is expected to be around 5 percent per annual. In the coming Five-Year plan for National Economic and Social Development a number of initiatives will be finalized which will require massive amounts of copper. In 2015, the expected consumption of copper products will be over 9 million metric tons. The main driver of the consumption is the electric power industry which accounts nearly the half of the total consumption; followed by cooling application with 15% and transportation with nearly 10%, see figure 1."
