Hydrothermal method was applied in the preparation of calcium sulfate whiskers in airtight re-actor using gypsum as primary materials. The optimum conditions of preparation are as follows: pH value 9.8~10.1, concentration 5%, material size 18.1µm, which were determined by the analysis of the diameter of CaSO4 whiskers through SEM. On these conditions a product of ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with diameter of 0.19µm and aspect ratio of 98 is obtained. Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with different concentrations, modified by titanate NDZ-401, were added into polypropylene as intensifier and composites of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers/ polypropylene were prepared by melting-extruding method. Mechanical performance of the composites was tested and surface morphology of the composites was observed by SEM. The results indicated that impact notched izod of the composites was enhanced by 49.5% compared with pure polypropylene when 10.0% Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers were added into polypropylene and toughening effect was very remarkable. Dispersion behaviour and interface phenomenon of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers in polypropylene matrix were investigated by SEM. The results indicated that Dispersion performance of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers modified by titanate NDZ-401 in polypropylene matrix is good, which improved mechanical performance of composites to some extent.

Approximately 2.4 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver have been produced from the Umuna Lode by Misima Mines Pty Limited between June 1989 and the end of Decemeber 1996. Reserves remaining at the end of December were 32.1 million tonnes at 1.0 gram per tonne gold and 9.7 grams per tonne silver. To attain precious metal production of this volume, an estimated K60,000,000 (1996 Kina) was spent on exploration alone. from the 1940s to the present day. Exploration expenditure for the 1996 calendar year was approximately K4,400,000. With such a large investment in exploration, large quantities of data were generated and stored in various forms. To make best use of this data, it was necessary to organise and systematically store this data in a form compatible with a modern Geographical Information System (GIS). The Umuna Lode on Misima Island is a low sulphidation gold- silver deposit dated at 3.5 ¦ 0.2 Ma. The deposit is controlled by the 50 to 100 metre wide Umuna Fault- a moderate dipping, brecciated clay- chlorite- carbonate altered, normal fault zone. There is approximately 230 metres of mostly dip slip offset on this fault, which is measurable by the offset of the Cretaceous schist, marble and greenstone host sequence. Late Miocene microdiorite spatially related to the Umuna Lode does not appear to be genetically related to the gold- silver mineralisation. GIS was introduced to Misima at the end of 1995 and until recently has been mostly used for data storage and retrieval, the over- laying of various data sets to assist in targeting prospective areas, and as a drafting tool. The use of data-driven, predictive data analysis is the most recent effort in maximising the use of the extensive Misima database. By characterising the key controls and properties of the Umuna- type mineralisation, a Weights of Evidence, data-driven analysis produced a prospectivity map of Misima Island. The purpose of this map was to identify prospective areas yet to be explored and to assess the effectiveness of exploration to date.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. The underground metalliferous mining industry continues to change under the influence of many factors including, to name a few, new mining techniques and equipment, new approaches to risk management, more stringent safety and health standards, new employment practices and orebodies become deeper and often lower grade. In addition, the same technological revolution and plummeting cost of technology that has brought the GPS, smart phones and digital cameras to the general population is also working its way through the mining industry impacting on communications, automation and process control as well as introducing major efficiency and productivity dividends. However, not all factors are positive including, in particular, the issues of carbon costs and electrical power. This paper explores some of the trends affecting ventilation in hard rock mines, some of the existing and likely future challenges and some of the potential future solutions to these issues.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2013. Improving reaction effectiveness of asbestos tailings and acid is main means to increase the productivity of magnesium hydroxide and amorphous silica and to reduce production costs. In this paper, the process optimization of acid-leaching reaction process of asbestos tailings is reported. Through the orthogonal experiments of four influence factors, such as acid consumption, reaction temperature, reaction time and initial acid concentration in the leaching reaction. The experiment results indicated that the optimal process parameters were as follows: reaction temperature was 95?, reaction time was 1.5h, acid consumption was 218.9g hydrochloric acid(37%) per 100g asbestos tailings and initial acid concentration was about 25%. The influence significance sequence of the four factors was as follows: reaction temperature > reaction time > mass concentration of hydrochloric acid > hydrochloric acid consumption. Under the optimum process conditions, the leaching rate of MgO was 97.3%, total iron 98.15% and Al2O3 57.9%.

"INTRODUCTION Conventional tailing storage and management practices typically utilize engineered facilities, such as ring dikes and valley impoundments. To reduce the environmental costs associated with disposing of mine wastes in tailing storage facilities (TSFs), several beneficial re-use strategies have been developed over the years. For example, thickened tailings have been used for paste backfill. It is common for tails to comprise up to 60% of the material’s total weight and it has been estimated that TSF volumes can be reduced by 60% when using this strategy, (Benzaazoua, et al. 2004). Other beneficial re-use strategies have produced unpaved temporary access roads, hot and cold asphalt, chip seals, self-compacting concrete, and golf course sand traps. This project sampled mine tailings from two different TSFs in Colorado and produced structural concrete that could potentially be used for commercial foundations, sidewalks, and paved roads. The tailings were substituted for the fine aggregates typically found in conventional concrete. The two main objectives of this study were to investigate the structural integrity of the produced concrete samples and the leaching of heavy metals from the resulting concrete. The ratio of tailings to fine aggregate (T/FA) was carefully studied to find if there was a correlation between the substitution rate and the structural integrity. The potential maximum substitution rate was also investigated for the produced concrete specimens. The potential of leaching mining impacted water (MIW) was evaluated by comparing the leachability of the raw mine tailings to the encapsulated tailings by using standard shake extraction prediction tests. MATERIAL AND METHODS Materials The four components that make up the concrete mix design for this project are: cement, coarse aggregate (gravel), fine aggregate (sand and mine tailings), and water. The type I/II ordinary Portland cement (OPC), gravel, and sand came from local cement and concrete companies in Denver, Colorado. Mine tailings were collected from two different TSFs in the Rocky Mountain Region, where Pride of the West TSF in Silverton, CO will be denoted as Site A. The primary metals of interest at the mill site are gold, silver, lead, copper, and zinc. The location of Site B will not be mentioned in this report due to confidentiality agreements with the mining company"

THE Alaska Highway, in its course through British Columbia, traverses parts of two great physiographic divisions of Canada which are also distinctive geologically-the Cordillera in the western section and the Interior Plains in the eastern. The Cordilleran region in the portion of the Province with which this paper deals can be divided into four major northwest systems, known respectively from west to east as Coastal, Plateau, Cassiar-Omineca, and Rocky Mountains. The Coastal system consists solely of the Coast range except in the extreme northwest, where a part of the St. Elias range is included. The Coast range, characterized by mountains of great ruggedness,. is made up of an igneous complex of granitic rocks intruded chiefly as a great batholith. In places, spurs of these rocks extend into the Plateau heft, a partly mountainous tract largely occupied by quartzites, quartzose mica schists and their gneissic phases, and crystalline limestone with interbands and broad areas of chlorite, _hornblende, and sericite schists and bodies of intrusive granite gneiss-an assemblage of rocks known as the Yukon group. The Cassiar-Omineca system marks the divide between the Pacific and Arctic drainages. Its eastern boundary is well defined in the south by the Rocky Mountain Trench (see p. 229). The rocks of the system are, miainly, highly altered Palaeozoic sediments, but there are also Precambrian and Mesozoic rocks, the latter largely volcanic. The core of the system is granitic and there is evidence (see p. 221) to support the belief that it is of such a length as to constitute a batholith comparable to that of the Coastal system.

The methane content of virgin bituminous coalbed can now be measured accurately in the field with exploration core samples from vertical boreholes. The gas content of the coal per unit weight can be used either to design a mine ventilation system or to determine if degasification of the coalbed will be necessary before mining, and to determine the gas resources in the coalbed. The equipment necessary to conduct the test costs less than $50. The gas con-tent of the coal in place in the ground is determined by summing the gas lost from coring, gas measured during desorption, and the residual gas in the coal. Upon removal from the borehole, the core sample is placed in an airtight container and des orbed for several weeks until the desorption rate is below 0.05 cm3/g for 5 consecutive days. The gas lost from the core while it was being cored and the residual gas are estimated by a new graphical method. The amount of gas remaining depends upon whether the coal is friable or blocky. Friability appears to relate to the depth of the sample below the surface, fixed carbon percentage, Hardgrove grindability index, and proximity to tectonic disturbance. Friable coals emit nearly 96 pct of the total gas during desorption whereas a blocky coal emits only 60 pct of its total gas. Coalbeds that are ill defined as to their blocky or friable nature must be tested in the laboratory for unambiguous analysis.

The problem of long-term open pit mine planning is a large combinatorial problem, which canÆt be solved easily by mathematical programming models because of the large problem size. In this paper a new metaheuristic algorithm, which has been developed based on the ant colony optimisation (ACO) and its efficiency, have been discussed. To apply the ACO process to a mine planning problem, a series of variables is considered for each block as the pheromone trails that represent the desirability of the block for being the deepest point of the mine in that column for the given mining period. During implementation several mine schedules are constructed in each iteration. Then the pheromone values of all blocks are reduced to a certain percentage and additionally the pheromone value of those blocks that are used in defining the constructed schedules are increased according to the quality of the generated solutions. By repeated iterations, the pheromone values of those blocks that define the shape of the optimum solution are increased, whereas those of the others have been significantly evaporated. By using this algorithm a high degree of complexities could be considered in objective function and constraints of optimisation model. In addition it can improve the value of the initial mining schedule up to 34 per cent for some cases in a reasonable computational time.

The effect of temperature on the physical properties of structural materials has been the subject of many investigations during the past decade. The literature on the effect of elevated temperatures. is voluminous, and during the last four years a great deal of experimental work has been carried out on the effect of low temperatures on the impact properties of steel. For many engineering purposes it is important to know the shock resistance of steels at low atmospheric temperatures, and with the ever-developing field of refrigeration and separation of materials at low temperatures, the normal limits of atmospheric temperature have been exceeded in practice. Iron and its alloys in the unnotched condition have a high impact strength at low temperatures, but in practice variations in type of notches result either from design or accidentally through scratches and surface or internal defects. A study of notched bar impact tests is, therefore, highly important to the engineer. A survey of the literature on low temperature impact testing indicates that chemical composition, heat treatment and method of testing have been the variables which have been considered in most previous work. In only a few instances has any mention of the steel- making method been mentioned and in these the comparison was between steel-making processes and not between steel-making methods on the same process. In view of the wide variations in impact properties at room temperature, in quench and strain ageing and in grain growth of steels of identical chemical composition, (by this is meant the usual five element analysis reported), it was felt

There are at least a dozen methods of selectively removing cerium from a mixture of the rare earth elements (REE) including separation techniques based on the oxidation of cerium to the quadrivalent state. Several of the oxidation processes have been operated on a commercial scale, others have been tested and in some cases are part of proposed flowsheets. In this paper, we describe and compare the various methods. We also present preliminary estimates of the costs of early Ce removal and discuss recovery and purity aspects of the options.

"In November 2004, the residents of the City of Nanaimo, B.C., Canada voted to approve a new conference centre as the centrepiece of a proposed revitalization project for the city’s historic downtown core. The proposal goal was to replace a cluster of derelict buildings with a dynamic and modern complex that would connect existing city facilities to a new conference facility, the Vancouver Island Conference Centre (VICC). The conference centre is expected to create 150 full-time jobs, attract visitors/ delegates from across North America and generate new economic opportunities for local businesses.However, the proposed site posed a number of geotechnical and geoenvironmental challenges. As is often the case with coastal cities, historic growth of the Nanaimo downtown and harbour area was achieved through reclamation of former waterfront areas and inlets. These areas were often infilled with random fills and even wastes, leaving a legacy of variable density heterogeneous fills contaminated with a variety of pollutants. Preliminary assessment of the site indicated a high likelihood of a requirement for deep foundations, a high risk of liquefaction in the event of an earthquake and the presence of both soil and groundwater contamination. Construction would be further complicated by the requirement for two levels of basement parking and the proximity of adjacent buildings and major roadways to the work area.With a limited budget (fixed by the referendum) and timeframe, the city needed a cost-effective solution to proceed with construction. A number of options were considered, but an innovative design using leading-edge Cutter Soil Mixer (CSM) technology best met the geotechnical and budgetary requirements of the site. The CSM approach also addressed the environmental concerns of contaminated soils and groundwater. Golder Associates Innovative Applications (GAIA) Inc., in association with the designers of their parent company Golder Associates Ltd. (Golder), proposed the CSM technology — at the time the first North American application."

The present work is part of an ongoing Bureau of Mines effort to provide a better understanding of the fundamental phenomena involved in sulfide flotation, the role of oxygen in xanthate adsorption being one essential issue. Galena was chosen as the material around which to develop a conceptual model, partly because of its demonstrated oxygen sensitivity and partly because information on its properties and flotation behavior constitutes the largest part of the fundamental information available on sulfides of commercial importance. The model is formulated primarily in terms of surface electronic energy levels produced by oxygen and xanthate and is further developed using existing experimental evidence and its implications. Four major functions of oxygen are elucidated, and the relationship of these to the formation of lead xanthate, dixanthogen, and a surface compound is discussed. Though yet incomplete, the model provides a useful framework within which the results of diverse experiments can be related to one another in their proper perspective, as shown by a brief discussion and resolution of some apparently discordant results reported in the literature.

"Training Program at Sherritt Gordon's Ruttar:. ConcentratorA formal training program for mill operators is being developed and employed at Sherritt Gordon's Ruttan Concentrator. The program was set up to fulfil the needs created by a shortage of skilled reliable labour, a 200% turnover of personnel within the first six months of operation and the rapid advances in mineral processing technology. All new employees are introduced into the Mill Department through an orientation program designed to familiarize them with the operation of the plant. All training and orientation of new employees is the responsibility of a. small training section consisting of two training foremen and one assistant. Using a combination of classroom and supervised on the job training, the training times have been cut by at least one half. High operating standards have been set and are maintained through the use of detailed manuals for each work area and competent instruction at all operating levels. The major portion of training costs arise from the salaries of the training staff but are negligible when compared to the improved recoveries, smaller turnover and less downtime. Government assistance is available to all industrial employers to offset the costs of training employees."

Expansion in total capacity of the natural-gasoline industry.to produce light products continued in 1944 and 1945. The average rate of gain, however, was reduced to about 6 percent annually from over 9 percent in the preceding 4-year period. New facilities at cycle plants again accounted for most of the increase in productive capacity. Between January 1, 1944, and January 1, 1946, the number of cycle plants increased from 32 to 37 and their total capacity from 3,278 thousand gallons daily to 4,848 thousand (48 percent). Capacity of all other plants in the industry increased in the same period from 12,735 thousand gallons daily to 13,080 thousand, or only 3 percent. The capacity of the average plant increased to 28,600 gallons a day from 24,400 gallons on January 1, 1944, continuing the established trend. The average capacity of cycle plants increased to 131,000 gallons a day from 102,400 gallons, and the average capacity of all other natural-gasoline plants increased to 22,200 gallons a day from 20,400 gallons. Although the number of plants increased in only three States in the 2-year period (Texas, Okla- homa, and Arkansas), the total capacity of plants increased in eight States. A further decline of 29 reduced the total number of plants to 626 on January 1, 1946. Compared with 10 years earlier, gasoline plants were more numerous in only 4 States: Texas (48 more), New Mexico (7 more), Arkansas (2 more), and Louisiana (1 more). The largest declines, in order, were in Oklahoma, Illinois, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and California. The number of plants with fractionating equipment for separating the liquefied gases from heavier fractions was 202 on January 1, 1946 and 182 2 years earlier. The principal changes in number and capacity of shut-down plants were an increase in Texas and a decrease in California. Shut-down natural-gaso- line plants are usually among the smallest units in their vicinity.

In 1951, Tata Steel became the pioneer in Asia by setting up its first ever washery in West Bokaro Colliery. The first beneficiation plant used to produce clean coal of 19% ash with chance cone. Feed size of chance washers were -75 mm to +6 mm. The fine coal (-6 mm) were used directly. With change in technology,in 1986,chance cones were replaced by DM cyclones and coal was washed in two circuits. In the coarse circuit -13 mm to +0.5 mm coal was washed in two stages while the fine coal of -0.5 mm was treated in froth floatation cell. With further improvement in the process the higher ash raw coal was feed to produce clean coal of 13% ash. In 1998, DSM cyclones were replaced by scrolled Evolute design cyclone which has Ep of 0.020 to 0.025 ranges resulting in increase efficiency of separation. With the increase in demand of clean coal, lower seam proportion has increased in raw coal production. The washability studies of individual seams indicated large difference in the seam characteristics in terms of washability and specific gravity cut points of the individual seams. So washing all seams together had resulted in frequent change in the character of coal and warrants frequent changes in the operating parameters of the plant in which the separating efficiency comes down and ultimately resulted in yield loss initially. With increase in knowledge and experience in coal washing the solution to this problem was achieved by adopting, seam-wise washing which is enabling process engineers by keeping set point for longer periods there by to enhance the separation efficiency. LET'S imagine we are at the Grand L Coulee Dam, where daily 15,000 barrels of low-heat Portland cement and 27,000 tons of processed aggregate in various sizes are mixed to produce 30,000 tons of concrete. Inspect the autographic records which show for each 4-cu-yd. mixer batch of concrete the weights of its constituent materials including its several sizes of aggregate, cement, and water, and which also show the period of mixing and the consistency of the mix. Watch the inspectors sample and test the aggregate for gradation and moisture content of sand, and sample the concrete for homogeneity. Watch the huge buckets deposit the concrete in the forms. It looks too dry to handle, but the concrete vibrators make it melt away. Just enough vibration fully to com- pact the mass, but not enough to produce segregation of the materials; the inspector says when. See the sprinkler system covering all hardening concrete with a spray so that it may not thirst for water. Watch the cleaning of the top of an old lift preparatory to placing a new lift; the sand blasting; the blow-down; the mop-up; the minute inspection.

"The various technologies developed for treating spent potlining (SPL) from primary aluminum smelters have been reviewed on several occasions. The technologies generally involve physical, chemical, and thermal processes, either individually or in combination, with the primary objective of total recycle, waste minimization, or complete disposal. In general, those technologies geared for recycling involve separations and are therefore subject to recovery inefficiencies that are attributed to several factors. However, the inefficiencies could be reduced or possibly eliminated if the pots were designed for recyclability. This concept is applied to SPLASH, a recently developed SPL management technology.IntroductionAluminum is produced by molten salt electrolysis via the Hall-Héroult process. The process is conducted in an electrolytic “pot,” which is comprised of a steel frame first lined with insulating refractory brick, and then conductive graphite blocks, which serves as the carbon cathode [1, 2]. These materials are collectively referred to as “potlining.” Anodes comprised of petroleum coke/pitch are suspended above the pot and extend down into the molten cryolite (Na3AlF6) electrolyte. The electrolyte temperature is maintained at approximately 980 °C by resistance heating as low voltage (4-5 volts) and high current (50,000-300,000 amps) are applied across the two electrodes.High purity alumina is added to the cryolite bath, where it dissolves and becomes amenable to aluminum reduction at the cathode:"

The tailings are waste from mineral processing operations. The type of tailings of iron ore processing are classified into sandy tailings and mud. Already the overburden are showing significant levels of useful mineral. Both iron ore`s waste have in your composition phyllosilicates/clay that indicates the potential for use in niche markets as paving and cement. According to several studies, there are various technologies in bench and pilot levels that could be used on a large scale but there is not an economic environment, tax, regulatory and tax set. Many of these technologies are associated with the reuse of tailings and overburden in construction. All these factors influence for that so many initiatives remain in search formats and cannot advance to the new business format. There is no way to set goals of reuse of this waste, as already occurs in China, if there is not a fiscal, tax and economic structure to support such measures. The way to foster and ensure that reuse of tailings and overburden is an incentive for promoting a culture of circular economy that would allow the emergence of an ecosystem between the private, public and Government sectors with the objective of accelerating and subsidize the entire network of reuse of this waste. The closure of the mine could be the tool used to ensure and boost this ecosystem of reutilization to align it with the vocation of the area of the mining law. Following this model, the end of the mining activity could provide a financial return to the local population, a more effective environmental compensation and a reduction in costs related to the closure of the mine. In the exploitation of porphyry-type deposits, the quality of the ore is mostly defined according to its grade. Besides the simplest distinction, ore-waste, several grade categories may exist and they correspond to the different ways in which the ore is further processed. At the time of mining the selection of the different categories is done from extensive information available from blast holes. But planning has to be done before this information is available and it is necessary for the geologist to forecast, from exploration and development data alone, the possible outcome of the selection done later on a block, a level, or the whole deposit and ultimately predict the ore reserves and value of the deposit. A good statement of this problem has been presented at the 1976 AIME annual meeting by Williamson and Hueller (1976). They have shown that, if the cut-off values are directly applied to the estimated grade of blocks, a gross overestimation of the recovered tonnage of ore (14%) will occur. This problem, now termed "the vanishing tons problem" (DaVid, 1977) seems to be common in many open-pit operations and it has been explained several times (DaVid, 1972; Huijbregts, 1975). In order to solve it l.Jilliamson and Mueller proposed a solution based on compiling masses and masses of blast hole data available from mined-out portions of the deposit. They derived empirical correction factors which provide for every block, given its estimated grade, the expected tonnage and average -grade of each category of material within that block. The purpose of our work is to repeat the same exercise but ignoring the blast holes data i.e. we want to derive the correction factors from the only DOH data.
