The mineral processing industry is in boom times. The focus on mill availability and therefore profitability has never been greater, as grinding mill maintenance often dictates the entire plant shut down duration. Advances in mill systemsÆ quality and reliability and the faster, safer relining afforded by RMEÆs Mill Relining Systems have significantly enhanced grinding plant availability and utilisation. Yet relining performance is still affected by the design and planning by a team of stakeholders long before the maintenance team set foot in the mill. For a greenfield grinding plant project, these team players include: 1. project owner, 2. project manager, 3. mill supplier, 4. liner supplier, 5. plant operating personnel, 6. plant maintenance personnel, 7. mill relining crew, and  8. mill reline system supplier (RME). The complex and sometimes competing design demands of mill construction and operation together with the pressure of tight timelines can result in even simple maintenance requirements being overlooked let alone optimising plant design and planning for maintenance. This paper identifies all the involved stakeholders in an effective mill relining 'team' and gives principles and considerations for each to more effectively achieve the goals within their vital roles. This paper is aimed to be a practical guide for grinding mill designers and planners to more fully exploit the advances in Mill Relining Systems and improve their mill profitability.

With traditional grade control processes, geological models are created by geologists at the completion of the data collection stage and wireframe construction is closed off at a set date to allow for time to complete the estimation process. Any issues identified at earlier stages or the addition of new data requires the estimation process to be started again. Alternative interpretations are explored only if time allows and often in a limited fashion. An alternative workflow has been developed at the Waihi Underground Gold Mine utilising Leapfrog Edge and Seequent Central. Geological and grade control models are created, dynamically linked, and saved as separate branches. A project geologist is able to work on the grade control model and a mine geologist on the geological model simultaneously. This allows for a non-linear modelling workflow with continual review and feedback. The introduction of new data can occur right up to the model due date, with data collection, validation, alternate interpretation, and review happening incrementally. Models are categorised and stored in Seequent Central according to project status. An approved version of the geological model and grade control estimate are uploaded at the time of release and transparently capture all data used at a point in time, as well as the review process. Dynamically updating models for grade control has reduced turnaround time while increasing accuracy and quality. Estimates of individual domains are vastly improved from being able to rapidly evaluate the effects of model parameter changes in real time and 3D. Development and stope design directly benefit from these streamlined processes, with higher quality, timely production occurring as a result.

Productive and beneficial use of reclaimed surface-mined land is a concern of industry, government, and the general public. An investigation was conducted of current mined-land planning practices to aid in the development of a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials. This investigation considered both the industry and public planning approach to mined-land planning. It included a detailed review of the impact of regulation, factors that determine land use, and current site planning methods employed by the mining industry. The methods of this investigation included three in-depth case studies of surface mines in the eastern, central, and western United States. A site planning pro-cess has been developed and applied to the surface mine case studies to evaluate the economic, environmental and social impacts of postmining land use alternatives. In add it ion, guidelines are proposed to enhance the cooperation between local land use planners and surface mine planners, as well as to improve comprehensive planning with regard to mineral resources at the local and regional level.

Foster-Miller Associates has developed a set of guidelines to permit hoist manufacturers, mine owners, and MESA mine inspectors to design, purchase, install or inspect a safe and effective Emergency Escape Hoist, as required by the Coal Mine Health and Safety act of 1969. A series of surveys were carried out to determine: 1. The attitudes and local needs of the MESA District Managers. 2. Current escape hoist installations. 3. Equipment available for future designs. 4. Foreign methods and equipment for mine rescue. From these survey studies, preliminary guideline objectives were developed.

The contract objective was to develop and test automatic fire control systems for large surface machinery in surface coal mines. The effort described by the report covers the period from 31 January 1977 to 11 November 1977 and accomplished the following tasks: ? Data accumulation, mainly from visits to the major manufacturers and mine sites. ? Hazard analysis of blast-hole drill, mining shovel, and dragline. ? Recommended design concepts for automatic fire control systems for each of these vehicles. ? Detail system designs for each of these vehicles. ? Procurement of prototype systems for the blast-hole drill and mining shovel. ? In this paper, the argument is put forth that the codes used for public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves have some significant limitations with regard to the information provided to investors on the short- to medium-term value of mining properties. Such limitations include a) failure to explicitly incorporate a time element and b) failure to state explicitly the quantity and quality of mineral product that will be produced for sale. A time-value framework for reporting mineral assets is proposed in order to overcome these limitations. The proposed system is based on two classification axes: a) an X-axis representing time in years during which the value of the asset is likely to be realized and b) a Y-axis representing the value identified by a mining or exploration company\u2019s activities. The potential benefits of this system are discussed, including the ability to incorporate factors, such as permitting and construction times, directly into the magnitude of the reported mineral assets. The proposed framework would assist in the standardization of mineral assets reporting in such a manner that they could eventually be more readily included in financial statements. This document describes the development of a conventional mining equipment data base, and an approach for conducting industrial engineering studies of arbitrary mining systems employing network techniques. Data was acquired through underground time studies. Each member of a four-man field team was assigned to a specific machine during each shift for which observations were conducted. Using digital wrist watches and networks describing the man-machine interactions, all events occurring luring the course of each shift were recorded on cassette tapes. The tapes were transcribed, coded, keypunched, and validated using computerized editing techniques. The resulting data files were processed to provide statistics relating to activity durations and event frequencies. The results were used to evaluate operator, machine, and system performance for each section which was observed. Equipment, reliability, and maintainability analyses were conducted using the industrial engineering data files in conjunction with historical information collected at the mine site.

Numerical models play a significant role in the design of safe underground mining excavations and support systems. Advances in the capabilities of numerical modeling software, together with ever increasing computational speeds, have made it possible to investigate the very nature of the large-scale rock mass and its response to mining excavations. The improved understanding of the rock response obtained from modeling enhances our designs, resulting in greater stability and safety of the mining excavations. To help advance the state of the art in this field, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health organized the International Workshop on Numerical Modeling for Underground Mine Excavation Design. The workshop was held in Asheville, NC, on June 28, 2009, in association with the 43rd U.S. Rock Mechanics Symposium. The proceedings include 10 papers from leading rock mechanics and numerical modeling experts in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Germany. The papers address a wide range of issues, including various numerical modeling approaches, rock mass modeling, and applications in coal and metal mines.

"Rare earth (RE) elements are essential components of emerging green technologies. The increase in demand for these applications have driven the search and development of new rare earth deposits such as the Niobec project in Quebec, Canada. This deposit consists primarily of dolomite with significant amount of RE minerals bastnäsite and monazite, the primary sources of RE elements. Due to the minerals’ fine liberation sizes, flotation is commonly used as a concentration method. To develop an efficient process, the electrokinetic properties of the minerals must be understood. In this study, the surface properties of bastnäsite, monazite (RE minerals) and dolomite (a common gangue mineral) were investigated by zeta potential measurements. These measurements are affected by various ions present in solution; for bastnäsite, monazite and dolomite, some of these ions are H+, OH-, PO43- and CO32-. Dolomite, being a sparingly soluble mineral and a primary component of the ore, may be the greatest contributor of these ions in solution in the form of CO32- ions. Thus, different sources of CO32- ions (from dolomite dissolution and from Na2CO3) were investigated. The research work aims at elucidating how these reagents may influence the minerals’ surfaces. The results have shown that dolomite supernatant and sodium carbonate greatly affect the electrokinetic properties of each minerals. The addition of dolomite supernatant have resulted to relatively similar zeta potential of the minerals; while, sodium carbonate have affected them differently. These observations could be useful in efficient flotation of bastnäsite and/or monazite from bastnäsite-monazite-dolomite system.INTRODUCTIONThe increase in the demand for rare earth (RE) elements has driven the search and development of new deposits. Out of 53 rare earth projects in the world, 19 can be found in Canada (Hatch, 2015). These include the Niobec project of Magris Resources Company in Quebec. This deposit contains a significant amount of rare earth minerals (such as bastnäsite and monazite), with carbonates (such as dolomite) as the primary gangue minerals."

An ignition detection and suppression system was developed under the scope of this contract. The objective of this machine mounted system was to detect flames caused by frictional sparking from the cutting bits of a continuous mining machine and to suppress it with sufficient speed to prevent the development of an explosion, and to keep the flame from harming the machine operator.

The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. "INTRODUCTION.Luring the year 1923 a complete survey was made of the condition of research in the reduction (milling) and concentration of ores and nonmetallic minerals - that is, up to the stage where the ores or concentrates were ready for hydro- or pyro-metallurgical treatment. This survey was carried on under the general supervision of L. A. Lyon, assistant director and chief metallurgist of the Bureau of mines, in cooperation with the milling committee of the American Institute of mining and metallurgical Engineers, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of California. Other institutions, including the National Research council, were of assistance and outlined recommendations during the study.While this report is on ""ore dressing"", it contains short sections on coal and clay. The mechanical handling that these minerals undergo is ""dressing"", so that ore dressing is inclusive of metallic and nonmetallic minerals. ""milling"", in its broadest sense, includes with ore dressing certain other metallurgical treatment which the report is not designed to cover.The survey revealed that considerable experimentation is being carried on great cost to the mining industry, but that the research is in general poorly coordinated while companies and firms are adequately taking care of routine tests and the mechanical features involved in their own operations, no comprehensive study of the fundamental principles of ore reduction is now in progress or contemplated. Many industries, besides mining, are interested in the preparation of materials for final treatment, rendering this investigation of value also to them. This class of fundamental research is neglected by industry unless there is some agency which can bring together at least a majority of this interested in a cooperative effort. It can not be effectively handled by a single company; and, moreover, no company can be expected to bear the whole burden of an investigation to benefit the entire industry or a number of industries hence there is need for concerted study within reasonable limits. Furthermore, co-operation eliminates duplication, which is largely a waste of effort and capital."

There is no startling revelation to the fact that the mining industry as a whole is generally moving toward the use of larger equipment to process ores in quantities far greater than what was even considered a decade ago. Trucks and shovels have led the way in extra large machines and many other manufacturers have followed suit in the development of so-called "supers" in their line of equipment. In order to keep pace with the industry, crusher manufacturers have also enlarged the size of their equipment. There is now on the market, a Gyratory crusher capable of accepting a 72" diameter piece of ore. Primary jaw crushers have also increased in size. It is inevitable, therefore, that larger secondary cone crushers would also be required to complement the other equipment used to process these large quantities of ore. This super-size secondary cone crusher is the SYMONS 10 Ft. Cone Crusher. Until 1973, the largest cone crusher built was the 7 Ft. Extra Heavy Duty crusher, which is currently used in the majority of the mining operations throughout the world. The 10 Ft. crusher, when compared to the 7 Ft. Extra Heavy Duty Crusher, is approximately 1-1/2 times larger in physical dimensions; three times heavier; will accept a maximum feed size which is approximately twice as large; and will crush at approximately 2-1/4 times the rate of the 7 Ft. machine at identical closed side settings. It will be the largest cone crusher built in the world. At the present time, Rexnord's Nordberg Machinery Group has accepted an order for two 10 Ft. Standard cone crushers to be delivered to an iron ore mine in South Africa in early 1975.

Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota, and a 30-mile radius area of influence on the United States side of the International Border, was examined for hardrock (nonferrous metallic minerals and diamonds) mineral potential and environmental sensitivity by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The investigation also included an analysis of current Metallic Minerals Leasing Rules of the State of Minnesota, and the probable effects of changes proposed to the current rules by the State of Minnesota in order to "encourage mineral exploration and development." The study has determined that the proposed changes to the Minnesota State Leasing rules will have minimal, if any, impact on the likely, foreseeable levels of mineral-related activities in the State as a whole, and particularly, in the area of influence to the Park. Voyageurs National Park management was advised on the extent and character of the proposed rules changes, and on those items of concern meriting a specific and timely response by the National Park Service.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a computer-assisted Ground Control Management System (GCMS) for near realtime evaluation of underground coal mine ground conditions. The GCMS combines existing mine-monitoring system and sensor technology with automated computer analysis techniques to enhance the acquisition, analysis, and display of geostructural data. The GCMS, which combines mine structure data with other information, such as geologic conditions and mine layout, has provided information on mining-induced stress transfer and pressure buildup associated with several ground control events. The GCMS collects and analyzes shield-leg pressure, ground pressure, and strata movement data to evaluate the structural behavior of an active Western U.S. Iongwall coal mine. Field data are transmitted over a dedicated phone line to the USBM Denver Research Center (DRC) mine monitoring laboratory, 240 km (150 miles) from the mine site. Real-time collection, processing, and analysis of mine structure and shield pressure information has proved to be an effective method for near-face ground conditions while mining progresses. The GCMS provides the mine operator with information to rapidly identify and manage potentially hazardous ground conditions while mining is in progress.

"The crude zinc oxides (CZO) produced in any thennal process dealing with EAF dust also contain lead, cadmium, and a considerable amount of halides (chlorides and fluorides). The high halide contents make these crude zinc oxides less and less attractive, both technically and economically, and a further refining procedure is nece'ssary to meet the zinc and zinc oxide market requirements.Hydrometallurgical techniques commercially used to dehalogenate the crude zinc oxides are not effective enough to upgrade the crude zinc oxides to the required specification for their direct use in the traditional sulphuric electrolysis by primary zinc producers.The EZINEX® PROCESS has solved the problem of the halides contained in the crude zinc oxides. This process is the only proven technology electrowinning zinc from a chloridebased electrolyte in a conventional cell house. This paper discusses the process economics taking the data from feasibility studies of different size commercial plants."

"The present large-scale use of energy and power by the human species represents a unique event in the billions of years of geologic history. Furthermore, in magnitude, most of the development has occurred during the present century. In the United States, the peak in the rate of petroleum production occurred in 1970 and that for natural gas is imminent. The peak in the world production of crude oil is expected to occur at about the year 2000 and that for coal production at about 2150 or 2200. For other sources of energy and power, water power, geothermal power and tidal power are inadequate to replace power from fossil fuels. Nuclear power, based on the breeder reactor and utilizing lowgrade deposits of uranium and thorium, has a larger potential than the fossil fuels, but it also constitutes a large perpetual hazard. The largest source of energy available to the earth is solar radiation. This source has a life-expectancy of a geologic time scale, is nonpolluting and is larger in magnitude than any likely requirements by the human s pecies. In consequence of the large supplies of available energy, the period since 1800 has been one of an unprecedented exponential industrial growth. This also has been accompanied by a world-wide ecological disturbance, including that of the human population. It can easily be seen that such a period of growth must be ephemeral in character and, in fact, is now almost over. One aspect of this transition from a state of exponential growth to a state of nongrowth is the present alarm over an ""energy crisis."" Actually, the world's present problems are by no means unmanageable in terms of present biological and technological knowledge. The real crisis confronting us is, therefore, not an energy crisis but a cultural crisis. During the last two centuries, we have evalved what amounts to an exponential- growth culture, with institutions based on the premise of an indefinite continuation of exponential growth. One of the principal consequences of the cessation of exponential growth will be an inevitable revision of some of the tenets of that culture."

IntroductionProspects facing those who search for mineral wealth were described rather well more than 200 years ago by a Scottish professor of moral philosophy, who also happens to be the father of modern economics.In search for new mines, Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations, ""there seems to be no certain limits either to the possible success or to the possible disappointment of human industry"".How true that statement remains today, where we are seeing economic cyclical problems compounded by basic fundamental structural change within the mining industry.Despite the enormous advances in earth sciences during the past two centuries, the rewards of mineral exploration still remain uncertain. Even though a promising orebody is found, ultimate profitability may still depend on the vagaries of the marketplace, where large and unanticipated changes in supply, demand and prices can play havoc with the best of calculations.The Canadian mining industry has had its share of disappointment during the past few years, with savage competition, shrinking demand, declining prices, and disappearing profits. But it has also had some share of success, such as at Hernlo, which now seems certain to provide some of the lowest cost gold production in the world"

Any mining engineer with a desire to operate independently, with some financial backing, and with no fear of heavy responsibility and long hours, should be able to make a comfortable living in Mexico. Barring a few inconveniences such as a lack of satisfactory liability or accident insurance, the difficulty of obtaining repair parts or vehicles, and the length of time required to receive returns from shipments, the operation of small mine is not at all difficult. It is, in fact, a little easier to find a good prospect in Mexico than in the U.S.

Central Norseman Gold Corporation was established in 1935 and has been mining on the Norseman field in Western Australia since then. It is Australia’s longest continuously operating gold mining operation at nearly 80 years, although it has had its periodic challenges in the intervening years.Over the last 40 years, a series of open pit mines around the Dundas Goldfield have supplied lower cost mill feed to the Phoenix Mill at Norseman from time to time but this has largely come to an end for the foreseeable future. Now that underground ore sources are once again the principal mill feed, there are several challenges to be met for an ongoing profitable operation.During the last 20 years, there have been three different owners and this has affected the manner in which the operations were managed quite significantly. These differing approaches are contrasted and examined in some detail from both the operational and financial aspects.Planning of a downsized operation to ensure sustainable profitability in the future in a mining environment where there has rarely been more than two to four years of reserves ahead of the mill for planning purposes has been a significant challenge.
