This Bureau of Mines report is essentially a handbook, or manual, for making the type of mineral resource valuation commonly required for such public policy problems as mineral leasing. The principle of resource valuation through the capitalization of cash flow is well established. A mathematical procedure, based on a simplified accounting system, is detailed for calculating cash flow from revenue, plant costs, and operating expense. Variations of procedure cover cost depletion, percentage depletion, and depletion limited to 50 percent of net income. The influence of the depletion provisions of the tax regulations on the value of a resource to an owner and to an operator is analyzed. The relationship of royalty, bonus payments, and sales price to resource value is also described, and methods for approximating resource values using these payments as input data are developed.

This paper discusses the computerisation of the drill hole database, some historical records and the creation of a three-dimensional model of the gold bearing structures for resource estimation and mine design at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania. The phase of the work reported here commenced in November 1997 and was completed in March 1998. The historical mining on the Tasmania Reef had reached a depth of 450 m below surface when work ceased in 1914. Production up to this time was 854 000 ounces gold. Recent activity has concentrated on testing depth extensions of the previously mined ore structure, to a depth of 1000 m below surface, and the establishment of an underground mining operation to exploit this resource. The lode structure at Beaconsfield is a typical mesothermal vein style deposit. Gold is contained within narrow quartz, carbonate and minor sulphide reefs or veins. Reef width is variable from a few centimetres to several metres with æsplitsÆ or bifurcations being common. The reef averages 2.7 m true width in the economic zones. The key feature of this style of mineralisation is that reef continuity can be confirmed by drilling to a high level of confidence, but the gold grades are somewhat more erratic in nature. The resource estimates were based entirely on drill data. The drill intercepts on the reef were coded for each split directly into a database and these allocations validated graphically. The distribution of grades and widths show an increasing gold grade with reef width for both the drill hole and historical data. The same histogram patterns, mixed populations and overall arithmetic average grade for the historical mine (at 21.52 g/t > 3 g/t Au) and new drill data (at 21.55 g/t > 3 g/t Au) would indicate that there has been no major change in the overall style or grade of the ore from the historically mined areas to the new resource. The reef, host geology, area of historical workings and resource zones at the Beaconsfield Mine were defined as a series of closed wireframes. The Tasmania Reef was modelled as five mutually exclusive wireframes, one each for the Main Reef, Footwall split, Second footwall split, Third footwall split and Hangingwall split. The data for this exercise was extracted directly from the drill hole database, stored in Microsoft Access format. The formation of the solids was largely automated with manual validation and refinements allowing for multiple runs using different interpolation methods and combinations of drill holes. A rotated 3D-block model in the plane of the Tasmania Reef was created to contain the grade model and allow for tonnage, grade and reef width estimates. An inverse distance squared (ID2) interpolation method was used with ranges of 25 m along strike and 125 m down plunge with blank areas infilled with 50 m by 250 m. Each reef split was filled separately using only drill intercepts from that split. The method was independently validated used MIK methods. Longitudinal sections have been prepared showing gold grade, reef width and width +grade. Estimates were also made for arsenic, sulphur and other minor elements. The long sections show three distinct mining zones. A method is presented for the conversion of the resources to reserves by the addition of mining parameters for minimum mining width, minimum pillar, cut-off grade and internal and external dilution. The selection is done on columns within the block model, and allows for all splits to be considered at once. Multiple runs can be made for varying combinations of parameters to test different mining methods and their impact on reserves, mine life and NPV.

Shotcrete is a versatile and widely utilized rock support material in mining and civil engineering projects due to its adaptability, strength, and efficient application. It immediately stabilizes rock surfaces, effectively controlling loose materials and preventing rockfalls in underground excavations. This paper focuses on assessing and analyzing data from observations of nozzlemen (shotcrete sprayers) during primary ground support activities in an underground mine. The study highlights the importance of nozzlemen’s skills in ensuring the quality of shotcrete application, which is critical for underground mining operations’ structural integrity and safety. A comprehensive training program and field support were implemented to enhance the nozzlemen’s proficiency. The training set covered theoretical knowledge and practical techniques to improve shotcrete application daily. Proficiency improvement was assessed using quantitative metrics, with rebound percentages decreasing by 5–14% as nozzleman competency increased. The results of this initiative showed significant improvements in shotcrete quality, including increased efficiency, reduced waste, and fewer reworks or rehabilitations. The findings aim to contribute to a broader understanding of best practices in shotcrete application and nozzlemen training, ultimately enhancing ground support application measures in the mining industry.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of common impurities, that is, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and iron, on the Brinell hardness of electrolytic titanium. On a weight basis, nitrogen had the greatest hardening effect, followed by oxygen, carbon, and iron in order. The hardening effects of oxygen and carbon were almost identical up to a concentration of approximately 0.1 percent by weight. Above this concentration, the relative hardening effect of carbon decreased rapidly, possibly because of its limited solid solubility in a-titanium. Hardness vs. composition curves for both oxygen and nitrogen were essentially straight lines over the range of Brinell hardness numbers (B.h.n.) covered in the investigation. The hardness of titanium was also determined as a function of the percentage of impurity atoms. On this basis, iron in concentrations up to 0.17 atomic percent had a greater hardening effect than either oxygen or carbon. INTRODUCTION Determination of the as-cast hardness of arc-melted titanium is a method of quality control widely used in industry. Numerous studies4/ have been made of the effect of impurities on the hardness obtained by this method. However, most of them have been based on the use of either iodide titanium or commercially pure Kroll sponge (B.h.n. >90), as a starting material.

This paper details an assessment of stemming practices at a South African opencast coal mine and their influence on ground vibration and air blast. Quantitative and qualitative analysis methods were used for the study. The parameters assessed for the quantitative analyses included stemming length, stemming material type, blast-hole depth, burden, and spacing. Pre-blast data from the mine was analysed to determine the deviation between actual and mine design stemming parameters. Mine design stemming length was also compared to the rule-of-thumb stemming lengths. Peak particle velocity (ground vibration) and air blast data from seismograph stations around the mine was analysed to determine the correlation between stemming length and excessive ground vibration and air blast. The qualitative analysis involved observations of blasting procedures at the mine to determine compliance with mine procedures. Some level of non-compliance of actual stemming parameters to design stemming parameters was found, which initially suggested that non-compliance may have contributed to excessive air blast. However, further analysis of the seismograph results indicated no direct correlation between stemming length and excessive air blast and ground vibration. Since stemming parameters are interrelated, it is crucial that all blasting procedures, including stemming, are executed in accordance with best practice, and recorded accurately. There is a need for digital systems for capturing on-bench blasting parameters, as the currently used manual data recording and reporting systems are inefficient and prone to error. Improvements to blast designs are possible through efficient and accurate data recording and reporting systems.

This paper deals with roof bolting in Alabama coal mines and iron-ore mines from the time it was introduced in early May 1948 to May 1, 1953, a 5-year period. The Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of the United States Steel Corp. began systematic roof bolting in early May 1948 in a coal mine and in an iron-ore mine, which had some of the poorest roof conditions in the Alabama mines. After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proved by the Tennessee Co. it was gradually adopted by other companies throughout the State, until in May 1953 approximately 53 percent of Alabama's total coal production and 100 percent of Alabama's total iron-ore production, mined underground, was being produced from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the advancement made in roof bolting in the 5 years and also the amount of roof bolting that was being done as of May 1, 1953. Significant progress has been made in the coal and iron-ore mines of Alabama in reducing the roof-fall fatality rates during the past several years by adopting systematic roof bolting. The groundwork was laid through successful experiments early in 1948 by the Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of the United States Steel Corp. in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines. This experimental work was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead Co.2/ in its Southeastern Missouri mines.

An Early Proterozoic orogenic terrane of metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks underlies Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. Middle Proterozoic epizonal terranes of anorogenic granite and rhyolite, a known metallogenic province partly exposed in southeastern Missouri, overlap the orogenic terrane on the south. These Proterozoic terranes, covered by less than 1,000 meters of Phanerozoic strata, contain a virtually untapped source of mineral wealth and are one of the last frontiers for geologic exploration in the continen-tal United States. Petrographic study of subsurface samples is a powerful tool in the identification of favorable host rocks for a variety of ore deposits.

Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Safety in Mines Research Board of the Mines Department for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine safety stations, and to F. R. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, Great Britain, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine safety testing stations in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as is the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy mine atmospheres which might, through neglect or accident surround the equipment. The means used by these countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers of American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. This paper presents the second of these surveys, which covers conditions in Belgium.

Abstract - Most of the gold in the Late Archean Witwatersrand Basin is of detrital origin but, in its present form, it is metamorphosed. The only relict detrital features preserved are the morpho­logical characteristics of some placer gold particles. Regional burial metamorphism in the shallower and deeper levels of the Witwatersrand Supergroup reached temperatures around 300°C and 350°C at pressures between 2 kbar and 3 kbar, respectively , estimated from phase relations, chlorite-chloritoid exchange thermometry and chlorite thermometry . Metamorphism of the gold involved compositional homogenization of individual gold particles and partial recrystallization. Various infiltration events caused the partial mobilization of the gold at slightly lower temperatures, between 240°C and 300°C. These infiltrations can be related to crustal extension during the deposition of massive carbonate sequences of the Transvaal Supergroup (around 2.5 Ga), and later to the emplacement of the Bushveld Complex, and to the Vredefort event around 2.0 Ga ago. The mobility of the gold was dependent on the sulfur fugacity prevailing in a particular horizon which, in turn, was deter­ mined by the amount of pyrite (and other sulfides) present in that horizon. With the sulfur fugacity being controlled by stratigraphy, low fluid:rock ratios in a pyrite-rich horizon were most conducive for the mobilization of the gold. Thus, long-range gold mobilization in the Witwatersrand Basin can be expected to be the exception rather than the rule.

A method was investigated for detecting and counting filamentous iron bacteria in open recirculating cooling systems. It is simple and fast and does not require trained microbiologists. Samples from 26 systems were examined. Cells were cultivated on commercially prepared ready-to-use media. Cultures grew well on this medium and were identified as filamentous iron bacteria by microscopic examination and by their ability to deposit iron using the prussian blue reaction.

Indium (In) solubility in the FeO-SiO2-Al2O3-5%CaO slag was measured under p(O2)=10¯¹¹ atm at 1573 K to clarify the dissolution mechanism of In in FeO-bearing metallurgical slag. The In solubility increased with increasing oxygen partial pressure, whereas it decreased by increasing the activity of basic oxide, viz. FeO. Thus, a dissolution mechanism of In in the FeO-SiO2- Al2O3-5%CaO slag was described by the following equation. In(s)+1/4O2(g)=(In+)+1/2(o2-) The enthalpy change of the In dissolution reaction was negative, indicating that the dissolution reaction was an exothermic reaction. This is consistent with the above reaction mechanism.

Yes we have also used some however, again because of the nature of the maintenance window where we have that two hour (at best) window every night and due to the numerous other crews that are wanting to get in to do the other types of maintenance activities, we don't know if we are going to be getting into that same area from one night to the next. So even with the dormancy additives that one can add to cementitious grouts (that are good up to 72 hours) we don't know if we are going to get back in to the same locations from one week to the next. That's why I use the term "the forgiving nature of the acrylamide". It allows us to ream out the hole allowing us to use the exact same hole without having to re-drill a new hole. The program started in 1997 and we have a budget between labor/materials and equipment of 4.5 million dollars on a year to year basis. For the next few years that is going to come down drastically because the program is going to be more of an ongoing maintenance program. It has long been appreciated that chloride chemistry has a number of advantages over the more traditional sulphate route for both extracting and separating metals. Modern materials of construction, coupled with the development of a more cost-effective and efficient hydrochloric acid regeneration technology mean that chloride-based processes are now more competitive and attractive. Such processing routes are able to recover more of the contained metal values in a feed, including iron in a benign and/or marketable form, and particularly the so-called rare and rare-earth elements which are increasing in demand in our electronic age. These factors, therefore, add appreciably both to the overall economics of a project, but also offer a much more sustainable approach to our dwindling natural resources. Additionally, chloride-based flowsheets can be much more environmentally-friendly, offering practical alternatives to two of the biggest headaches faced by the industry, namely cyanide usage and the generation of red muds. This paper presents a brief theoretical background, focusing on the latest developments of ferrous iron oxidation and the low-temperature, selective hydrochloric acid regeneration process, which is the key unit operation for any chloride flowsheet, and discusses in general the advantages of the chloride approach. Several recently-developed flowsheets, which have been tested at the miniplant level, are presented for gold, base metals, titaniferous magnetites and lead-silver ores wherein the advantages of considering a chloride approach are highlighted.

MR. G. G. BOWSER: Mr. Kalbhenn's paper is an excellent one and is a concise description of a very interesting piece of work. It is well known that a great deal of preliminary study was given to this job before the final plans were made. It is due to this thorough preparation .chat the work progressed so satisfactorily, smoothly, and safely. The ideas carried out in the construction of the hardwood pack, timbered compartment, inclined raise, loading chute, and steel-boomed room, all contributed to a successful conclusion of the work. The extra care in being certain that the compartment shafts were well timbered was especially necessary on account of the difficult blasting conditions. In other words, the foundations .of this job were well and truly laid. The blasting in this work was very difficult due to the nature of the Strata. Working under an ever precarious roof condition and completing .this job with only two lost-time accidents is a record of which to be proud. The shaft men engaged on this work are also due for praise. I regret I did not visit this work while it was in progress. It was not in lack of interest. This, however, more or less proves that the blasting end .of this job went along with practically no trouble. I have seen the nature of the rock, as I made several visits to the tunnels while they were being put through from the Phalen to the Harbour seam. According to figures in Mr. Kalbhenn's paper, the explosives consumption works out to 1.61 pounds per cubic yard of rock in the solid, or 0.8 pounds per ton. The explosives consumption in the tunnels ran from 2.86 to 3.46 pounds per cubic yard or an average of 1.58 pounds per ton of rock. Of course, the rock in the shaft was blasted in the most economical way possible, as far as powder costs are concerned, as the face advanced at close -wright angles to the strata and gravity was acting with the explosive. The tunnels were driven nearly 'end on' the strata and bottom holes had to be lifted, and I believe there was some re-drilling of ribs left in the floor. I would like to congratulate Mr. Kalbhenn on his very fine paper.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines report, the conditions required for the direct reconstruction of a tomogram from observed line integrals are examined. Because of the limited access to the working faces in coal mines, the special case of access to only two opposite faces is emphasized. Classical matrix methods were used for small dimensional (2 by 2, 3 by 3, and 4 by 4) applications to determine the limitations and the requirements for a solution. The results for large (n by n) grids were then inferred and generalized from those of the smaller grids and matrices. Limited access tomography is found to be appropriate for in-seam hazard detection from seismic and microwave data, but it is shown that additional data must be added to obtain a direct solution.

"Potassium (K) is one of the essential elements for the growth of plants and thereby for humans. In fertilizers, potash demand has been steadily increasing at ~3.5% annually. Water soluble potash deposits are rare and highly localized. India is neither present on the world potash production map nor it has adequate potash rich rocks. The K-bearing minerals are recovered either by using conventional underground mining methods or though solution mining methods. India possesses a vast resource of silicate rocks such as glauconitic sandstone and Feldspar. These rocks are basically a group of alumino silicate of potassium, sodium and calcium (K2O%: 5-12, Na2O%: 3-10%, SiO2%: 52-65, Al2O3%: 15-20, Fe2O3%:, 5-7 and MgO%: 2-3.5).The K extraction from silicate rocks has received little attention probably due to the slow release, the locked structure of alumina-silicate minerals, and the unavailability of appropriate economic processes & their know-how. In fact due to this India imports all of its potash demand (about 3.5 million tons per annum) from different countries.In the present work, an attempt has been made to identify the structural and chemical alteration of desired K mineral phase in silicate rock (~K2O%: 10.5, Na2O%: 2%, SiO2%: 55, Al2O3%: 19, Fe2O3%, 5-6, MgO%: 2.5) under different conditions such as acid leaching, thermal treatment and chemical processing. Different treatments are aimed to increase K availability which is related to the modifications in mineralogical composition. The modifications in the feed sample and treated samples are studied through SEM-EDAX, XRD, EPMA and optical microscope. With the combination of treatments, it is possible to extract more than 90% K and the formation of sylvite phase (water soluble) confirms the dissolution of potash values."

"NOT TOO LONG AGO, the CIM Education Committee saw the need for an information campaign to promote interest in mineral industry careers among young people. Today, times have changed and the Committee has now placed emphasis on the definition and function of the mining engineer. This situation, we believe, is entirely normal and the change of emphasis is not due to a change in the needs of the industry but more to a diversification of these needs. In years past, the Canadian mineral industry, although a very important part of our economy, was looked upon as a specialized craft and, because of the richness of our resources, did not suffer too much from competition. Now, times have changed and we are increasingly at the mercy of the competition and damaging inroads of price fluctuations, etc. We will therefore answer the questions raised in this discussion in the light of the role played in the past and the role to be played in the future by the Canadian mining engineer. We will begin with the following premises : (a) If mining engineers are to be involved in the massive problems of society, their traditional background is not sufficient. (b) Councils for professional development are working on criteria for the accreditation of advanced degree programs in the United States as well as in Canada, and, simultaneously, three-year technology programs are being developed along with professional engineering degree programs. (c) The difference between European and American industries regarding philosophy of life is that in Europe they appreciate wisdom more than HPs while in America the HP seems to be more important. The Engineering Digest of February 1972 reported that in the United States, during June and July of 1971, the second highest rate of unemployment was for the 55 to 64 age group ( 4.1 per cent). Underground construction is a matter of dealing with the inherent uncertainty of subsurface geology. If the encountered conditions are less favorable than the expected ones, the execution of excavation, support, ground treatment or lining works is likely to require more or different efforts than anticipated, thereby delaying the works and increasing the costs. The 2019 first edition of the FIDIC Emerald Book model contract (FEB) addresses many of the issues to which underground works give rise, including those related to differing site conditions (DSC). This paper examines how under the FEB disputes arising from or in connection with DSC could or should be avoided.
