The cleaning of copper smelting slag requires magnetite and cuprous oxide reduction. The slag reduction with coke, injected coal powder or bunker oil is strongly endothermic and requires heat generation by fuel combustion or the use of electric energy. The reduction of fayalitic slag with calcium carbide is slightly exothermic and the formed calcium silicate modifies the slag. Thus, the additional energy is required only for covering furnace heat losses. Results of crucible scale tests showed the rate of slag reduction approximately five times higher in comparison of the slag reduction with coke under the same conditions. It seems that the effect of exothermic reaction and slag modification with CaO at the reaction interface results in very high rate of slag reduction. Industrial scale tests carried out in the Anglo-American Chagres Smelter demonstrated the possibilities of effective reduction and cleaning of the slags from a flash smelter and Peirce-Smith converters in a Teniente Slag Cleaning Furnace. The slag reduction was carried out without any reductant or stirring gas injection, simply by calcium carbide charging through a furnace mouth, and was very fast.

Several years of rock-burst research conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the mining companies of the Coeur d?Alene Mining District, Idaho, in addition to progress made by others throughout the world, have led to a good understanding of the rock-burst problem. This paper describes conditions which have caused specific bursts, present capabilities of detecting stress buildup and bursts, control methods, and a suggested approach to analyzing any individual mine-burst problem.

Using a Mark IV surface force apparatus, adsorption of dodecylamine hydrochloride on mica has been studied at pH 5.7 in the presence and absence of octanol. With amine alone, the repulsive forces between mica surfaces are reduced due to charge neutralization and attractive hydrophobic force; however, the latter is of relatively short-range with its decay length less than 2 nm. In the presence of amine and octanol, the hydrophobic force becomes more significant, its decay length being extended up to 6.5 nm. The increased hydrophobicity in the presence of octanol is attributed to the co-adsorption of the neutral surfactant with dodecylamine, which increases the packing density of hydrocarbons on the mica surface. The increased hydrophobicity due to co-adsorption is reflected in the improved floatability of silica when using octanol as an extender.

The Carson Hill mine of the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corporation is at Melones, Calaveras County, Calif. It is one of the numerous mines on the Mother Lode of California. The property extends for 8,400 feet along the outcrop of that important vein system. The elevation at the haulage level is about 1,000 feet above sea level. A family of modified-sulfur cements has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of construction materials with improved properties. Various types of sulfur cements were prepared by reacting sulfur with mixtures of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and oligomers of cyclopentadiene (CPD). Durable cements were prepared with structural characteristics ranging from rigid to flexible. These cements were used to prepare corrosion-resistant materials for use in a wide variety of industrial applications where resistance to acidic and salt conditions is needed. These materials were prepared as rigid concretes, flexible pavings, spray coatings, and grouts. Production of modified-sulfur cements in a commercial-size plant was demonstrated.

INTRODUCTION Drift design problems in caving operations are a re¬sult of the geologic factors contributing to the overall success of the system, of the engineering factors dictated by economic and technical considerations, and of ore production practices. Combining these factors, a rational underground sup¬port system of rock reinforcement, light steel channel section or welded wire fabric, and shotcrete can be de¬signed based on rock fracturing, rock load, abutment loadings, ground movement, expected repair and desired flexibility. The design concept uses the effect achieved by restraining, reinforcing, and maintaining some of the intrinsic strength of the fractured rock mass composed of interlocked blocks of intact rock and rock fractures. Three different examples of drift support design in hypo¬thetical mines using the caving system are given. Caving is a system of underground mining where ore is extracted by means of gravity after the ore body is allowed to fail by removing support from underneath. The rock mass of the ore body fractures and flows ver¬tically downward to let gravity do as much work as pos¬sible. Caving differs from many other mining systems in that blasting is used only to initiate the rock mass failure by removing the rock supporting the ore but not to break the ore itself. The initial movement of the rock mass dur¬ing failure and the consequent crushing and grinding during the continued movement serve to reduce the ore to particles of a manageable size, with only limited sec¬ondary blasting necessary. The broken ore is extracted from the bottom of the failed rock mass through funnels of some sort pre-excavated in the rock. Ore extraction must continue or the swell of the broken rock will even¬tually fill the cavity and stop further rock mass failure and movement. The excellent general discussion on block caving in the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (Julin and Tobie, 1973) adequately covers the principles and application of this type of underground mining. Many rock mechanics aspects of block caving have been covered by others (McMahon and Kendrick, 1969; Swaisgood, et al., 1972; Mahtab and Dixon, 1975; King, 1946) and will not be reviewed further. Maintaining the stability of production drifts is one of the most troublesome problems plaguing the mine manager in a caving operation. Many factors contrib¬ute to drift support problems, and identifying the causes of instability and producing a reasonable support design are two steps toward achieving stability consistent with the mine plan. This chapter sets forth a technique for the design of support systems for production drifts in caving opera¬tions. The basic support system elements employed are rock reinforcement, welded wire fabric, and shotcrete. Recognized as contributing to the design are the factors of rock load, additional load from mining activity, rock fracture characteristics, repair expected, and flexibility. It must be emphasized that the drift must first be stabilized as for a tunnel, and the additional strengthen¬ing for mining-induced loads cannot contribute to the initial premining stabilization, or the reserve of strength is used up. MINE PLANNING The efficient mine planning engineer not only must satisfy the economic, human, and environmental aspects of his task but must also consider the mechanical con¬sequences of his plan. The problems created for the mine by placing parallel drifts too close, by crossing drifts on different levels with inadequate, if any, separa¬tion, and by installing connections and crossovers in the haulage plan without regard for the effective spans cre¬ated, are only a few of the problems a mine planning engineer can create for himself and the mine. The effect on immediately adjacent mine areas when an area is caved is important to drift design because the removal of vertical support from a rock mass causes the weight of that rock mass to be shifted elsewhere. The adjacent rock mass will carry this load and reach a new equilibrium with the applied stress. The advancing front of stress increase that results from caving (and many other mining systems) is generally called the abutment load and is the increase in stress over the gravity or tec¬tonic stress that already exists, as shown in Fig. 1. In general, the abutment load will be similar in nature to the stress change found around an opening in rock and will be taken as causing an increase in the vertical prin¬cipal stress, due to an approaching caving boundary, so that

The former Gwynfynydd gold mine is located within the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, United Kingdom. The black shale-hosted quartz reefs have intermittently produced more than 50 000 ounces of gold since 1863. Its most recent period of operation by Welsh Gold PLC was between 1992 and 1999 when it extracted 10 000 tonnes annually from a total resource base of 180 000 tonnes. A historical mining grade of 15 grammes/tonne was recovered from the Chidlaw Reef on which all production was based. Erratically distributed gold pockets hosted in the footwall zone of a 3 - 6 m wide quartz reef characterise the mineralisation. The gold exhibits a high-nugget effect and as a consequence the accurate determination of tonnage and grade was difficult. Production was undertaken by overhand shrinkage stoping. Due to its location within a National Park certain environmental constraints were placed on the operators. The principal requirement of planning permission was that processing should take place above ground and not involve chemicals. As a result, an underground mill based on physical separation methods was constructed in response to these environmental constraints. Much of the mine discharge is related to the flow of rainwater through the workings from surface openings on the reefs. Discharge from the underground milling facility was enhanced in various metals, particularly zinc, though was reduced to legally acceptable levels using liming tanks prior to discharge into the River Mawddach. The company was required to monitor and treat all water discharged from the mine before it reached the river. The mine closed in 1999, since which time a tip re-processing has continued as part of an environmental remediation and gold supply program.

The microstructure, properties, strengthening mechanism and work hardening mechanism of 600MPa grade high ductility hot-rolled sheet steel for automotive square tube were investigated by utilizing optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that the microstructures of low C-low Mn-Nb and Ti microalloyed steel (Steel A) and high C-high Mn-Nb microalloyed steel (Steel B) are composed of ferrite and a small amount of pearlite. Compared with steel B, the size of ferrite and pearlite of steel A is finer, while the size of the second phase precipitates is larger. The mechanical properties of the two tested steels are similar before tube forming, except that the yield ratio of steel A is higher. Steel A has/exhibits significant work hardening after tube forming; the yield strength and tensile strength increase by 45 MPa and 26 MPa, respectively, while the elongation decrease by 6.0 percent. The yield strength and tensile strength of steel B increase by 22 MPa and 10 MPa, respectively, and the elongation decrease by 4.0 percent. The grain refinement strengthening is the dominant strengthening mechanism, accounting for 52.9 to 61.8 percent of the total yield strength; the solid solution strengthening is the second strengthening mechanism, accounting for 17.2 to 25.3 percent, while the precipitation strengthening and dislocation strengthening contribute little to the yield strength. The dislocation strengthening increase by 82 MPa of steel A after tube forming, which is higher than that of steel B. Therefore, steel B has a low work hardening rate that is more suitable for manufacturing automotive square tube for secondary tube forming.

At the present time, the mine-owner has a number of patent crushers to choose from, when contemplating the erection of a mill; and a number of new ones are yearly brought to notice. We all know that the stamp-mill is the old standard; but several of the patent crushers, especially of the roller-type, are not without their merits. Having had a working experience, extending over a period of four years, with the " Bryan roller quartz-mill," working alongside of stamp-batteries, I take pleasure in giving to the members of the Institute the benefit of my experience with this mill.*

Globalisation and consolidation is resulting in the mining industry coming to be dominated by a small number of very large companies seeking to lever assets and knowledge to create wealth. As an important service provider to the mining industry, the minerals tertiary education sector needs to understand these global drivers and respond to them. However, it is under-resourced and its sustainability is under challenge in all Western countries. Through the establishment and funding of the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC), the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has provided a unique opportunity to build a national, world-class minerals tertiary education environment in Australia that can be sustained in the long-term. This paper reviews how the global changes occurring in the mining industry provide the model for what needs to occur in the minerals education sector and how MTEC is the logical vehicle to facilitate these changes. It concludes by suggesting that the time has come to integrate the minerals tertiary education providers into one business. Furthermore, the vision should be for a global mining education academy based around a virtual university capable of servicing the cultural diversity and continuing education needs of the global minerals industry.

A mathematical model d1.20p/4L = A(8v)8 derived from the Blasius equation is proposed to be applicable to turbulent flow through straight cylindrical pipe for time-independent fluids which produce a diameter family of straight parallel lines on a log (dp/4L) vs log (8v/d) plot or stress-flow diagram. Such a correlation should permit scale-up with data taken from one pipe diameter for Newtonian, inelastic non-Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids, such as dilute polymer fracturing fluids, which produce considerable frictional pressure reductions. The Newtonian diameter exponent value 1.20 is shown to be empirically valid for turbulent non-Newtonian flow by application of numerical analysis methods. Multiple regression analysis is applied to a logarithmic linearization of the proposed model. An improved data fit results from further linearization achieved by taking linear terms from a generalized Taylor's series expansion about the multiple regression coefficients. Extensive experimental data obtained in five pipe diameters with water, sodium carboxymethyl-celIulose solutions, guar gum solutions, bentonite clay suspensions and calcium carbonate slurries are presented. Except for calcium carbonate slurries, which were investigated rather than time-dependent cement slurries, the fluids studied contain drilling or fracturing fluid additives. The behavior exhibited by these fluids is considered typical of most fluids encountered in drilling, cementing and fracturing operations. INTRODUCTION Considerable difficulties have been encountered in predicting turbulent flow pressure drops produced by non-Newtonian fluids flowing through straight cylindrical pipe. Correlations previously presented require extensive experimental data which represent several pipe diameters and a wide flow rate range to estimate the necessary scale-up parameters.l-7 One must implement either elaborate experimental apparatus or spend considerable time and effort to gather these data. Presented here is a correlation method which should minimize the experimental effort and data analysis normally required by utilizing flow data taken with only one pipe diameter. Turbulent flow data (up-stream and down-stream pressure and volumetric flow rates) were collected for five pipe diameters through operation of a small pipeline system having an electronic data acquisition and digitizing system. A mathematical model derived from the Blasius equation was utilized to describe the functional relationship between pressure drop and the two independent variables, diameter and average flow velocity. A correlation, which should produce a valid single-pipe scale-up, resulted from a computer-implemented statistical and numerical data analysis for several time-independent non-Newtonian fluids.

Rare earth elements have been widely used in various sectors, from the aerospace and steel industries, to electronic applications, particularly in displays and batteries for portable devices. The high demand for newer and better equipment, such as cell phones, tablets and lap tops, has increased the consumption of the rare earth elements and at the same time the need for its recovery from electronic wastes. For that reason, the recycling of batteries is important, principally the Ni-HM batteries, due to their elevated content of rare earths elements, in addition to the high concentrations of cobalt and nickel. The current processes are based on dissolution in strong acid solutions (sulfuric acid concentrations from 2 to 4 mol/L), and temperatures from 30 to 90°C. In the present work, electrodes from spent Ni-HM batteries were leached using 1 mol/L H2SO4, in the presence of ozone as the oxidant, where recoveries of 96% for La, Ce and Nd were obtained at room temperature. The separation of Ni and Co from the leach solutions was performed using an electrochemical reactor, after which rare earth elements were precipitated, obtaining a mixture of its hydroxides with impurities below 1%, according to EDS analysis.

"The demand for minerals and metals is increasing. Head grades of ore bodies are dropping. Remaining ores are becoming finer grained, more complex, and more logistically challenging. Mineral processing – in particular comminution – already consumes a huge amount of energy. But in 20 years’ time, it will require about six times as much energy as today to meet the world’s mineral demand.Unless we do something different.As minerals professionals, it is our job to find that “something different”. The world is relying on us. Of course, we must look for new breakthrough technologies and techniques. We must find them, and we will find them – most likely in surprising areas.But what if we also already know how to make 30-50% improvements to efficiency? Just by using existing technologies, by applying modern analytical techniques, by custom designing our plants, by applying manufacturing principles, by breaking down our management silos between disciplines.The thing is, industry professionals already know this. Yet – in spite of a lot of intelligent people trying very hard – we just can’t seem to make it happen.This discussion considers why, despite our best efforts, we don’t get the best out of what we already have. Why we are wasting energy and money. Once we understand why, we can set about unlocking that value and improving industry productivity and energy efficiency. We will discuss the role that professionals and volunteer professional organisations like CMP and CEEC can play in catalysing the changes."

Dual Tube Reverse Circulation (DTRC) drilling has been extensively used for collecting groundwater information for the dewatering program at Amax Gold Inc. Sleeper Mine. This paper presents a discuss ion of the types of data which can be collected from DTRC drilling, as well as the effect submergence has on the data. A simple low-cost method of injection testing has been developed using DTRC equipment, allowing quantitative data to be obtained from exploration or test holes. Potential yields can be determined for each drill location, allowing siting and design of production wells to be optimized.

Waste clay ponds are a necessary part of the phosphate rock beneficiation process. They are large, averaging a square mile in size; unsightly, in that they protrude 20 to 50 feet (6 -15 meters) above natural grade; stabilization and reclamation is slow; and they have had a history of catastrophic failure. The State of Florida has never published a specific rule regarding the configuration or height of these ponds, but has enforced numerous policies along these lines. The current rules are given and interpreted, along with the reasoning for current policy. In addition, an overview of the history of the policies, and an attempt at explaining the reasons for the changes that have occurred is given. The industry has been forced to make major monetary decisions, having effect for decades on mine economics, in a constantly changing regulatory environment. The Bureau of Mine Reclamation is confident that a direction of regulation has been solidified, but changes are still to be anticipated.

IF you would allow me some liberties, I would restate the title of this talk as "Scientific Research, Our Greatest Resource," because that title would represent more clearly a present-day conception of the metals and minerals situation. It is a subject worthy of careful consideration. Canada and the United States are so similar and interdependent in their national economies that, in the following discussion, examples of conditions in the United States may be interpreted to apply to Canada as well. Moreover, it is a striking fact that the per capita value of mineral production in Canada and the United States in 1940 was almost the same. Therefore, in the consideration of this subject, I have made no attempt to differentiate between the two countries. Consumption of the world's mineral resources in the last few decades. and particularly during World War II, has been so enormous as to require some form of magic to ensure the continued progress of civilization in the face of a diminishing supply of these resources which are so critically essential. "Consolidated Sudbury Basin Mines Limited owns two mines, 4 miles apart, near the southwest end of Sudbury Basin. The Errington mine lies close to the north boundary of Creighton Township and about 18 miles by car from Sudbury. The Vermilion Lake mine is in Fairbank Township, on the south side of Vermilion Lake.The first discovery of base-metal mineralization within Sudbury basin was made by James Stobie in 1897 at Stobie Falls on the Vermilion River, half a mile west of the Errington mine. A few years later Alphonse Oilier made a discovery of massive pyrite with base-metal sulphides near the west end of the present Errington workings.No work of consequence was done on these discoveries until 1924, when Joseph Errington acquired options on a large acreage of ground which was later taken over by the Treadwell Yukon Company Limited. After considerable diamond drilling this company sank No. 1 shaft in 1926. In the next three years, a large amount of underground development was done, a pilot mill was constructed and operated for two years. All operations ceased in 1931 with the fall in metal prices. While in operation the pilot mill treated 186,172 tons of ore the average grade of which was 1·07 per cent copper; 1 10 per cent lead; 4·60 per cent zinc; 0·03 ounces gold; and 1 70 ounces silver.Up to the time of closing in 193 l there had been completed at the mine 26, 790 feet of lateral work and 75,500 feet of surface and underground diamond drilling. The company records, however, showed no figures on ore reserves, except broken ore in stopes amounting to about 60,000 tons. A study of the plans, prior to reopening the mine in 1952, showed 1,450 lineal feet of ore (at 1952 prices) opened up by drifting on the 300-foot and 500- foot levels. It is clear that no comprehensive picture of the structure was had at this time. The orebodies were considered to be very irregular pods scattered through masses of quartzite-carbonate in a sheared zone about 800 feet wide. In some way the ore was believed to be related to the tuff-slate contact zone. With this picture it was impossible to make a reasonable ore estimate or even gauge the tonnage potentialities with any feeling of reliability."

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) studied the impact of an unregulated dust control technology (the Helmet-CAM) and a regulated dust control technology (the continuous personal dust monitor) within a sociotechnical system (STS) framework to mitigate respirable dust sources. The results address how to best incorporate the overarching principles of meta-design STS during the technology integration process. Specifically, quantitative and qualitative data show that a prominent focus on the social factors within an STS framework could help reduce organizational unpredictability and may improve communication within the system to help reduce technology adoption time.

"This paper presents the main features of the Wolf Creek Dam Foundation Remediation Project, highlighting the innovative construction approach and stressing on how the collaboration between the contractor and the owner became a key element for the success of this project.The main rehabilitation contract, $341 M, was awarded in 2008 for the construction of a 980,000 sqft concrete barrier. Most of this 2ft-wide concrete barrier wall is being built to depths reaching 277 ft using innovative construction techniques proposed by the contractor and under quality control measures that exceed by far the industry standards.The construction of the barrier wall entails the use of nine different foundation techniques which run concurrently following very stringent requirements in terms of verticality, distance between open elements, strength, permeability and dimensions that control the installation sequence of each barrier wall element.The innovative construction approach by the contractor and the collaborative efforts by the contractor and the USACE (“US Army Corps of Engineers”) have brought this unique and very difficult project to a successful completion, setting new standards in the dam foundation industry and nine months ahead of scheduleINTRODUCTIONWolf Creek Dam is on the Cumberland River in south central Kentucky. It provides hydropower, flood control, water supply, and water quality benefits for the Cumberland River system and surrounding region. The lake is a source of recreation that has attracted more visitors (4.89 million) than Yellowstone National Park (2.87 million).The dam and its adjacent reservoir reside upon a heavily Karst bedrock foundation. In late January 2007, the USACE placed the dam under a 'high risk' for failure designation. As a temporary measure, the pool elevation was lowered to 680 ft Above Main Sea Level (“AMSL”), 80 ft below its maximum capacity, with huge impacts to the local economy while the major, and ambitious, $ 594 million remediation program to bring the dam back to its full operating condition was carried out.The main rehabilitation contract of $341 million was awarded in 2008 for the construction of a 980,000 sqft concrete cut-off barrier. "As I have recently carried out some further research on the Navan lead-zinc deposit data while working in Michel David's research team, I should like to add a few comments on the paper- ""Universal Kriging for Ore-Reserve Estimation- Conceptual Background and Application to the Navan Deposit"", by M. Dagbert and M. David (CIM Bulletin, pp. 80-92, February 1976). The first comment is that since this research has been carried out, important new theoretical advances have been made which make for an easier application of geostatistics to the non-stationary case (see Matheron0l). This is the theory of intrinsic random functions of order k. With the aid of this theory, it has been possible to write computer programs which can carry out automatically universal kriging, although so far such applications have been largely confined to automatic contouring and not to mining problems. However, if approached with care there is no reason why these methods should not be applied to mining problems and, in this case, an automatic study has been done on this data."
