IT SEEMS particularly appropriate that the Institute's Regional Meeting should be held in Minnesota this year. Whether we like it or not, we cannot help looking at things now in the light of the World War and the all-out effort we, as a nation, are making to defend our resources, our institutions, and our way of life. The ability to do this lies in large measure in the ability to forge weapons of defense-the machines of war. The basic ingredients of any defense system, or war machine, are the raw materials of industry-iron ore, providing steel for guns, shells, tanks, and warships; coal for stoking the nation's furnaces; oil to furnish power for war planes, ships, trucks, and mechanized weapons; and all the other materials that play a vital role in the operation of modern armies and navies. The tremendous requirements of full-scale defense programs are indicated by the large number of commodities that are now under priorities because the supply is not sufficient to meet both defense needs and all normal civilian consumption. But out of all these items two are of paramount importance-steel and petroleum. In this age no nation can hope to main¬tain a position as a first-class power in the world without a highly developed industry, particularly the heavy industries based on steel, and without access to the necessary resources for those industries. In 1918, 70 per cent of the iron and steel production of the United States was required for defense purposes. In 1940, 15 per cent of our iron and steel production was consumed for defense purposes, and with the acceleration of the defense program, it appears that the proportion of steel output required for defense purposes will reach 40

"The combined treatment process for mine, tailings storage facility, quarry, circulating, and waste water in the mining and metals industry brings together the conventional chemical treatment processes and pneumatic flotation cells of the KFM series. The key principle of the process is preparing the water for treatment by saturating with finely dispersed air bubbles in the flotation cell blowers. Gas-air lift dispersers located in the lower part of the cell body additionally saturate the cell’s contents with finely dispersed air. Due to the residual content of flotation agents in the treated water, hydroxide ion-air aggregates form at the aerator outlet, supporting the efficient precipitation of hydroxide ions of heavy non-ferrous metals, calcium and magnesium ions. This process was tested in the pilot plant KFM-180 with a raw (untreated) water capacity of up to 18 m3/h per 1 m3 of the flotation cell volume using a mixture of the tailings storage facility and mine water from JSC Safyanovo Copper. The treatment process included raw water treatment with lime, aeration in KFM cells, and filtration in a sorbent bed. The content of metal ions in the treated water is lower than in the feed water by a factor of up to 170,000 and approaches the standards: aluminum 0.016-0.02 mg/l, copper 0.0043-0.0045 mg/l, zinc 0.049-0.052 mg/l. circulating water of Soryin Tailings Storage Facility at JSC Svyatogor. The treatment process included raw water treatment with lime and alkali, aeration in KFM cells, and filtration in a sorbent bed. The content of metals in the treated water is lower than in the feed water by a factor of up to 9000: copper 0.022 mg/l, zinc 0.012 mg/l, iron 0.012 mg/l, manganese 0.015 mg/l, nickel 0.132 mg/l, arsenic 0.016 mg/l. Water hardness is significantly lower: calcium - 12.6 mg/l, magnesium - 1.1 mg/l. This process can be used in the treatment of mine, quarry, tailings storage facility, and circulating water at mining and non-ferrous metals projects."

Problems of marketing industrial minerals to chemical manufacturers are manifold. In addition to the difficulty of establishing demarcation lines between "crude" and "processed" industrial (nonmetallic) minerals, and "industrial mineral compounds" further uncertainty exists because some chemical manufacturers do not talk the same language as the industrial mineral producer. For example, paint technologists use "rutile" and "anatase" to describe highly refined chemical compounds. The earth scientists use these terms to describe naturally occurring minerals. Further, marketing research problems are intensified because of the overlapping data of the Standard Industrial Classifications (SIC) groups, and the inexactness of "Chemical Industry," "Chemical and Allied Products Industries," and "Chemical Process Industries," which are widely variable in meaning but are often used interchangeably. Bureau of Mines information Circular 8244, "Minerals for Chemical Manufacturing," was the out¬growth of an attempt to unravel some of the problems caused by overlap of statistical data compared with actual industry practices. Using this study as a base, specific industrial mineral applications of some important sub-industry groups were analyzed for the; California chemical industry. Differences between local and national practices were compared. Practices usually differed, depending on cost and availability of alternate minerals, climate, idiosyncrasies, local regulations, and other conditions. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8260, "Mineral Fillers for the California Pesticides Industry," is the first such analysis of, a sub-industry group. Other such studies are underway. Obtaining national data is easy, but to be able to compile meaningful information which can be revealed on a regional and State basis generally is difficult and often impossible. This paper will briefly emphasize some of the industrial mineral problems encountered, and bring out the needs and benefits being derived through the continued cooperation of authoritative officials concerned with supply and consumption of industrial minerals in government and industry.

Noranda's Grey Eagle mine and mill, in the Siskiyou Mountains of northern California, began shakedown operations in the late fall and early winter of 1982. This paper describes some of the unique features in mineralogy, milling, and water treatment operation at Grey Eagle. In addition, major start-up problems in the mill and water treatment plant are discussed along with measures taken to correct these problems.

In order to further the understanding of spontaneous heating of longwall goafs a numerical model was developed, based on conservation principles applied to the transport of heat, water vapour and oxygen across the god Advective air flow into the goaf is caused by the differential air pressures across the god The air velocity field within the goaf area was computed using Darcy's law. The boundary and initial conditions concern air pressure, temperature and relative humidity. The oxidation rates and heat generation rates of the goaf materials required for the simulation were obtained from laboratory measurements. The main outputs of the model are temperature, oxygen and water contour maps, the rate of air leakage into the go4 velocity field and pressure distribution across the god. The model while still in its development stage, is able to simulate a heterogenous goafs constructed from different materials with different thermal and mass flow properties. Validation of the model by comparing its output with measurements from within goafs is required before the model can be used with confidence in a predictive sense.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the safety and the useful life of wire rope. In the most recent work, two 32-mm 6x27H flattened strand ropes were degraded on a bending fatigue machine. The two tests were run at constant loads of 285 and 347 kN or safety factors of 2.5 and 2. Nondestructive and tensile strength tests were performed on samples of the ropes to determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. Neither the area loss nor the number of broken wires measured from nondestructive tests could be used as clear indicators of the loss of strength. However, it was found from the tensile tests for both rope specimens that the strength loss was associated with the reduction of breaking strain. This suggests that measuring the strain of many short sections of a rope in the elastic region may locate the high stress sections and thus delermine the condition of the rope.

Blasting operations play a pivotal role in the overall economics of opencast mines. The blasting subsystem affects all the other associated subsystems, ie loading, transport, crushing and milling operations. Fragmentation control through effective blast design and its effect on productivity is a challenging job for the practicing blasting engineer due to inadequate knowledge of actual explosive energy released in the borehole, effect of varying initiation practice in blast design and its effect on explosive energy release characteristic. This paper describes the result of a systematic study on the impact of blast design parameters on rock fragmentation at two mines in India. Both the mines use draglines and shovel-dumper combination for removal of overburden. Despite its pivotal role in controlling the overall economics of a mining operation, the expected blasting performance is often judged almost exclusively on the basis of poorly defined parameters such as powder factor and is often qualitative, which results in a very subjective assessment of blasting performance. Such an approach is a very poor substitute for accurate assessment of explosive and blasting performance. Forty-seven blasts were conducted with varying blast designs and charging patterns and their impact on the rock fragmentation are documented. A high-speed camera was deployed to record the detonation sequences of the blasts. The efficiency of the loading machines was also correlated with the mean fragment size obtained from the fragmentation analyses.CITATION:Singh, P K, Roy, M P, Drebenstedt, C and Prasad, B, 2015. The Lake Lynn Laboratory is a multipurpose mining research laboratory operated by the Bureau of Mines and located in Fairchance, Pa, It consists of both surface and underground facilities. The initial focus of the facility, scheduled for full operation in fall 1982, will be on the problems of fires and explosions in mines. The initial experimental explosion was fired on March 3, 1982. The intent of this document is to provide the reader with detailed information on the physical capabilities of the Lake Lynn Laboratory. Subsequent publications will focus on the capabilities of Lake Lynn as compared with those of other similar facilities worldwide, and a comparison of initial explosion test results realized at Lake Lynn and comparable results from the Bruceton Experimental Mines.

DISILICIDE coatings, MeSi2, on refractory metals are usually grown by a solid-state diffusion reaction similar to the parabolic oxidation of metals. Two or more silicide compounds occur in each of the binary silicon-refractory metal systems. When an adequate source of silicon is available during the coating process, the lower silicide compounds are usually not formed.1 However, during service application of the coated refractory metal, continued heating causes further diffusion and growth of the lower silicides. A study of the growth kinetics of the lower silicides in the molybdenum and tungsten binary systems with silicon was previously reported.2 The present study is concerned with the growth kinetics of Ta5Si3 and Cb5Si3, formed as conjugate layers between TaSi2/Ta and CbSi2/Cb diffusion couples, respectively. Diffusion couples consisting of disilicide-coated tantalum and columbium sheet coupons were subjected to diffusion heat treatments, cross-sectioned, and scanned by an electron-microprobe analyzer to determine the relative X-ray intensity profiles. These profiles correspond closely to concentration profiles for the constituents, and were used to identify phases and locate phase boundaries. The analysis of a single specimen after a diffusion-anneal provides only one value for the Me5Si3 phase thickness, corresponding to the time and temperature of the diffusion treatment. Consequently, each isothermal curve showing the rate of accumulation or depletion of silicide phases required several samples with identical diffusion temperatures but different diffusion times. The disilicide coatings were prepared by pyrolizing commercially pure silane in a hydrogen carrier gas. The hydrogen was purified by passage through a palladium membrane. Commercially pure tantalum and columbium sheet metal coupons, 0.005 by $ by 2 in., were used. All of the coated specimens for each system were prepared together in a single group in order to minimize coating variations among individual specimens. During pyrolysis, the brightness temperature was maintained at 1200°C. With suitable flow rates at this temperature, only the disilicides of tantalum and columbium were formed in detectable amounts. Coated specimens were subjected to diffusion an-neals in a tube furnace with automatic proportional control within ±10°C. A H2-Ar mixture, deoxidized and dried over anhydrous magnesium perchlorate, was used to prevent oxidation during the diffusion anneal. Diffusion couples were cross-sectioned, polished and examined with an A.R.L. electron-microprobe X-ray analyzer. Both metal constituents in each specimen were simultaneously scanned using a 1-p beam spot size and either 1- or 2-µ steps. Analyses were performed using the Ka radiation of columbium and silicon, and the La, radiation of tantalum. For all specimens, an acceleration voltage of 30 kv was used, and integration was made against the specimen current. LiF and A DP monochrometers were used to isolate characteristic radiations. Three or more traverses were made on each specimen. The intensity scales were adjusted using the constituent metals and standard samples of the silicide compounds which had been verified by X-ray diffraction. The relative intensity profiles were used directly, in conjunction with the standard samples, to identify compounds and phase boundaries. The stoichiometries differ considerably between the silicide compounds in both systems, and the homogeneity range for these silicide compounds is narrow. These characteristics result in marked differences in relative intensities of the fluorescing elements—differences which permit ready identification of phases and phase boundaries. Ferrochrome is the major chromium source for stainless steel production, and submerged-arc furnaces (SAF) are most commonly utilised to smelt chromite ores into ferrochrome by using suitable carbonaceous reductants such as coke. Because of the complexity of feed structure and electrical-thermal-chemical interactions, there exist large gradients and wide distributions of temperature, mineralogy and other process variables in the furnace. This leads to various zones in the furnace, and different reduction mechanisms. Control of the furnace is thus often difficult due to the complicated physical and chemical situations in the furnace. The temperature profile in the submerged arc furnace has a great influence on the reduction rate and the production efficiency. Therefore, the energy generation through electrical arcs submerged in the solid feed and its distribution within the packed bed play an important role. In the present paper, an overall process model is illustrated to simulate inter-linked transport processes of fluid flow, heat transfer and reduction kinetics within the submerged arc furnace. The application of reaction kinetic data to simulate the chromite pellet/lumpy ore reduction with CO gas is presented and further adjusted to provide a submodel for a flow and heat transfer simulation for the packed bed by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. The comprehensive process model is aimed to simulate materials and gas flow, temperature and energy distribution throughout the furnace system. A preliminary model for gas flow and temperature distribution for the upper part of a 20 MW furnace (the packed bed) for high carbon ferrochrome production has been developed under simplified conditions. The integration of the reaction kinetic model into process simulation, and the future vision for a more comprehensive process modelling are discussed. It is expected that better understanding of the furnace insights through process modelling will help process optimisation and furnace control.

Alluvial diamond deposits covered with a thick overburden cannot be explored effectively and mined profitably with the available conventional techniques. A novel directional drilling technique has been developed and site trials have been conducted at the De Beers Namaqualand Mines situated at the western coast of South Africa. This paper describes the technique developed as well as the results of the site trials. The main task of the project is to develop a tool and a supporting system to achieve a remote exploration and ore extraction method for inaccessible alluvial diamond deposits. The project involves the acquisition of a system, commissioning on-site and evaluating the information obtained during assessment. The project consists of the design -of certain tools and instrumentation for the system, investigations and desktop studies as well as development of the system's logistics. The operating philosophy of the system is based on the keyhole surgery principle. In this study a pilot hole was drilled first, starting from the surface with an inclination to reach deeply seated diamondiferous gravel layers, followed by drilling into a more or less horizontal gravel layer for a certain length and finally pointing-upwards reaching ground surface at a predetermined exit point. The pilot drill bit was then replaced with a larger diameter reamer/mining tool and an HDPE tail pipe was attached behind the reamer. The drill string was retracted back to enlarge the guide hole and flush the excavated ore to the surface through the tail pipe. The material flow in between the sections of the system was' carefully measured to assess and record the gravel recovery rates. Several horizontal holes were drilled at preplanned drill paths to reach and follow the ore layer and the Ore extraction was achieved by means of a reamer/mining tool. Principles of the concept have been proven viable in this investigation.

The White Pine Copper Company, subsidiary of Copper Range Company, is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The offices, plant, and mine are six miles south of Lake Superior in Ontonagon County. Employing 1700 people, White Pine is the largest single industry in the Upper Peninsula. 970 underground employees produce 16, 700, tons of ore daily. From this tonnage 363,400 pounds of refined Lake Copper are produced in various shapes as specified by the customer. The following paper explains the geology of the ore body and briefly outlines present mining methods. It enumerates the reasons for considering longwall mining of a hardrock* ore body and the preliminary investigations leading to the decision to undertake the initial test panel. Selection of the initial test panel location is covered in detail. Equipment choice and reasons for that choice are described as well as selection and training of personnel.

With large deposits of low-grade molybdenum ore and a latent market for molybdenum, which with development might perhaps equal that for tungsten, the United States has for years made no pro- duction of molybdenum ore worthy of mention. In fact, during the decade previous to 1914, there was no output of molybdenum ore in this country except in 1905, 1906, and 1907, when a few small lots of molybdenite and wulfenite were marketed." To ascertain why this possible source of economic wealth should remain undeveloped, the United States Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation in 1914, with a view of assisting the establishment of a molybdenum industry in this country. A preliminary review of the situation showed the following conditions: Briefly there was a lack of any considerable demand for molyb- denum for the one known use that might consume any large tonnage of it, that is, for the manufacture to certain alloy steels to which molybdenum imparts properties roughly similar to those produced by tungsten. It was at once evident that the market for molybdenum in alloy steels must be developed, or that extensive new uses for the metal must be created, before the demand would be sufficient to war- rant any extensive mining of molybdenum ore. Investigation showed that one of the chief factors in retarding the development of any demand for molybdenum by the alloy-steel trade was that manufacturers who might use, or might investigate the possibilities of using, the metal were kept out of the market by the fear of not being able to obtain steady supplies. On the other hand, those who might be interested in the development of some of the extensive low-grade molybdenite or wulfenite deposits in this country were prevented from doing so by the small visible demand and the fear that any large production would glut the market. Owing to these conditions the mining of molybdenum has in the past been confined almost entirely to small-scale operations on high-grade streaks of molybdenite ore, and the methods of recovery have been limited largely to cobbing and hand picking.

The bulk and apparent densities , particle size , and surface area of ceria powders derived from the ammonium sulfate , carbonate , nitrate , oxalate , and sulfate salts and heated at 950 ° to 1,500 ° C for 1 to 24 hours were studied . The bulk and apparent densities and particle size generally increased , and surface area decreased with increase in temperature and time of heating ; surface area was more sensitive to changes in temperature and time than the other properties studied . These properties of the ceria powders had a marked dependence on temperature and a lesser dependence on duration of heating at a given temperature ; and the source of oxide and thermal treatment cannot be considered optional in the preparation of refractory powders by thermal decomposition . The ammonium sulfate and sulfate salts heated at 950 ° and 1,200 ° C produced oxide powders with the lowest bulk density , the smallest particle size , and the highest surface area . The highest apparent densities were achieved for oxides resulting from the carbonate and the sulfate but the carbonate - derived material was considerably coarser . The surface areas of ceria powders derived from cerium salts decrease in the order of sulfate , ammonium sulfate , nitrate , oxalate , and carbonate . The observation of these physical properties are useful in predicting the sintering behavior of various oxide powders .

Since the initial discovery of phosphate rock resources in North West Queensland in 1966, significant changes in ownership and development direction have occurred. Initially development of the resource involved beneficiation to produce a more saleable grade of phosphate rock. However more recently development has focused on the production of a high analysis fertilizer product on the minesite. These changes have been influenced by economics, industry/government cooperation and a changing phosphate industry.

The Act of Congress authorizing the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines became effective July 1, 1910. One of the most important duties Congress delegated to the Bureau in this Act was the study of health and safety conditions in the mineral industries. Early investigations of these conditions revealed the need of prompt Care of injured employees, as, under the difficulties inherent in their occupation, seemingly unimportant wounds if not treated promptly might become infected and cause permanent disability or even death. Many seriously injured persons brought out of mines and plants by fellow workers ignorant of approved methods of giving first aid or of safe means of transportation have been caused suffering and have had injuries accentuated to such a degree as to bring about permanent disability or death. The need of general instruction in first aid thus became apparent. BRIEF HISTORY OF FIRST-AID WORK The education of miners in the United States in first aid probably was conducted systematically first by the anthracite industry in Pennsylvania. Subsequently, first-aid training was carried on actively in Alabama and Indiana. Meanwhile, a general training campaign was carried on among industrial workers by the American Red Cross Society; when the Bureau of Mines began its nation-wide campaign of instructing employees of the mineral industries, the Red Cross turned over that part of its industrial training work to the Bureau but continued to cooperate by furnishing surgeons as judges in important first-aid contests and demonstr tions and assisted for a number of years in determining training methods.

"In this work, the effect of pre-strain rolling on the annealing behavior of friction-stir welded 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was studied. To this end, the as-welded material was rolled to 10 or 20 pct. of thickness reduction prior to the standard post-weld T6 heat treatment. Three rolling directions were the 3-mm thick sheet were considered: along the welding direction, perpendicular to the welding direction, and at the angle of 45° to the welding direction. At relatively low pre-strains (10 pct.), the annealing behavior was found to be very sensitive to the rolling path, and rolling along the welding direction was most effective in suppressing abnormal grain growth. On the other hand, increasing the pre-strains to 20 pct. of thickness reduction inhibited abnormal grain growth irrespective of the rolling path.INTRODUCTION Heat-treatable wrought Al-Mg-Si alloys are widely used due to attractive combination of strength, ductility, excellent corrosion resistance and low cost (Polmear, 2006). To provide the optimal balance of mechanical properties, these materials are typically commercially available in appropriately work- and precipitation-hardened conditions (Polmear, 2006). During conventional fusion welding, however, the prior strengthening effect is totally lost due to elimination of the work hardened structure and dissolution of the strengthening precipitations. An innovative friction-stir welding (FSW) technology may partially overcome this problem. Due to the solid-state character of this process, which involves very large strains, the welded material is characterized by fine-grained microstructure with moderate-to-high dislocation density, and thus the prior work hardening effect may be preserved or even enhanced (Threadgill et al., 2009; Mishra & Ma, 2005). However, heat input associated with FSW inevitably leads to dissolution and/or coarsening of strengthening precipitates, thus giving rise to the undesirable material softening. In an attempt to restore the strength of the friction-stir welded material, the standard T6 post-weld heat treatment has been applied, but this approach was found to lead to abnormal grain growth (Malopheyev et al., 2016; Mironov, 2013, Mironov et al., 2015)."

Foreword The office of the Supervisory Mining Engineer, a branch of the l. Federal Government, is financially interested in no oil company and has no stock to sell. This office, however, is deeply interested in the proper and efficient development of Canada's natural resources. The people of Canada are interested in the petroleum development in Turner Valley for two principal reasons: As represented by the Department of the Interior, they are the largest owners of petroleum and natural-gas rights in the field; As a nation, they are vitally interested in the development of petroleum and natural gas as a national asset, and therefore, also, in all productive property, no matter who directly controls the leases. As has been stated by Mr. Charles C. Ross, Supervisory Mining Engineer, "The Department, being responsible for the administration of these public resources, necessarily requires regulations to protect them from abuse by lessees. Our portion of this responsibility is to record a complete history of all drilling operations and to see that proper drilling methods are adopted to prevent damage and wanton waste of the valuable natural resources under discussion." Not only does our position necessitate an impartial and a judicial viewpoint, but, being day by day in touch with all operations in the western provinces, we are uniquely situated to comprehend both individual and general problems.

South Coast Water District (District) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel (BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Mon-arch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,424-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch Techite gravity sewer pipeline critical to the District Sanitary Sewer Collection System that conveys 1 MGD of raw sewage to a wastewater treatment plant. The original tunnel was constructed in 1954 and the sewer line replaced in 1974. Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews have documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel within the past few years (Sancon 2003). Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline. A 50-foot section of the tunnel was determined to be in need of immediate repairs, which were carried out from January to August in 2007. This section was enlarged to a horseshoe shape and lined with shotcrete. The pipe was encased in concrete in the invert of the new enlarged cross section. Hatch Mott Mac-Donald (HMM) designed the emergency repairs, carried out an assessment of the rest of the tunnel alignment, and is currently developing a work plan for rehabilitating the entire tunnel.

The mining industry faces increasing geopolitical risk in the coming decades. Constraints such as resource nationalism, corruption and social license could grow to outweigh fundamental limitations like geology or supply and demand (Ernst & Young, 2013; Verrastro et al. 2010). Lurking beneath these more immediate and palpable concerns, however, may be more significant risks entrenched in geography and history. Deep-rooted cultural and strategic forces that emerge slowly ? or erupt suddenly and unexpectedly ? can generate momentous and far-reaching political, social and economic changes. While multinational enterprises routinely assess for political risk, the nature of minerals extraction means long-term and systemic geopolitical conditions are especially important for mining companies to identify and understand. Mine development is a decades-long process that binds companies to the land and makes changing course to avert emerging threats a difficult and costly option. Consequently, geopolitical assessment is a pertinent and valuable tool that mining companies can use to more comprehensively evaluate strategic threats and opportunities. Geopolitics is the study of society, politics and strategy through the lens of geography (Gray, 1996). Its emphasis on relatively permanent physical features of the earth makes geopolitics a uniquely valuable tool for assessing political risk. Topography, climate and natural resources have shaped, constrained and motivated peoples and governments throughout history. These influences transcend regimes, policies and borders ? and even states themselves ? which, by contrast, change often and dramatically. Framing politics against mountains, deserts and rivers supports identification of historical patterns and forecasts of emerging trends. In other words, the physical map provides an objective and consistent model for studying a subjective and dynamic subject such as politics (Sloan and Gray, 1999). Consequently, geopolitical assessment can highlight threats and opportunities that go unaddressed by other risk methodologies that emphasize current conditions (Glancy, 2012). Taken together, the permanence of geography, hindsight afforded by centuries of political history, and interconnectedness of world events makes geopolitical assessment a valuable approach for conceptualizing strategic risk.
