"Froth flotation circuits are widely used throughout the mineral processing industry for the concentration of fine particles. It had been estimated that nearly 2 Gt (2.2 billion st) of ores are treated globally each year using this versatile separation process (Fuerstenau, 1999). Due to the high feed tonnage, a large economic incentive exists for flotation plant operators to optimize the performance of this critical processing circuit. Prior to the 1950s, the optimization of flotation circuits primarily involved the manual adjustment of operating variables based on visual observation and sporadic sampling (Lynch, Harbort and Nelson, 2010). During the next several decades, however, the advent of improved on-line instrumentation coupled with the rapid development of high-speed microprocessors allowed the industry to develop more advanced control systems that could quickly adjust operational parameters in response to disturbances in ore characteristics and plant flows. These early online controls typically involved feedback loops designed to stabilize cell performance through the automatic manipulation of process variables such as pulp levels, gas rates and chemical dosages. The set-points for these controllers were often set by plant operators based on one or more operator objectives, such as maximizing throughput, recovery or grade. More recently, these regulatory controllers have been interfaced with high-level data display and management systems that provide operators with the ability to better optimize flotation plant performance based on mathematical models and rule-based algorithms (Greet, 2010).While tremendous strides have been made during the past several decades, even the most modern flotation plants are still faced with the long-standing question: “What are we trying to optimize?” From an operator perspective, some common responses include “Maximize tonnage of saleable concentrate” or “Maximize metals recovery at a customer-specified market grade.” These replies may or may not reflect those of management, who often focus on economic goals such as “Maximize profits for each operational unit” or “Maximize rate of return for all corporate assets.” Unfortunately, these high-level objective statements do not always translate well into practice due to the disconnect between plant operating protocols and product value. Attempts have been made by industry to overcome this issue using various types of optimization routines such as linear programming or other optimization engines. While this approach does have some merit, these blind routines require considerable input data and interpretational expertise and provide little or no fundamental insight that can be used to drive improvements in concentrator performance."

The explosion hazard of methane-air mixtures has become an increasingly serious mine planning problem, and an advance assessment of methane gas potential can therefore be essential for a safe and economic mine development pro- gram. As part of its coal mine health and safety program, the Bureau of Mines has developed a simple, inexpensive test to measure the methane content of coal samples obtained from exploration cores. The gas content of coal per unit weight as determined by the direct method test can be used as a basis for a preliminary estimate of mine ventilation requirements, and to determine if degasification of the coalbed in advance of mining should be considered. Since the Bureau began measuring the gas content of coal samples in 1972, experience has led to equipment and procedural changes, the most significant of which has been the development of a ball mill for crushing the coal sample to release the residual gas at the end of the desorption test period. This revised procedure replaces the crushing box and graphical methods described in earlier Bureau publications. The results of 583 direct method tests are summarized in tabular form. These results include data on the gas content of 125 coalbeds in 15 States.

This report shows the feasibility of predicting drillability, analytically, by using regression analysis techniques. The approach is new in diamond-drilling research. Further, the study shows that this technique may be of value to drill manufacturers and others in mathematically delineating performance characteristics of new drills in specific rock types. Another application might be the prediction of penetration speeds in extraterrestrial material based on the physical properties of the materials as samples become available. Prediction equations for penetration rates are presented for 9 rocks drilled in the laboratory and for 20 rocks drilled under field conditions. The prediction equations are based on drill operating parameters and on characteristics of the rock penetrated. No single physical property appeared consistently in the best predictor equations, and all the physical properties were found to be highly correlated with each other.

A caldeira de recuperação de calor de gás de coqueria, denominada caldeira 22, foi submetida à inspeção e reparo conforme os dispostos na NR13 em função de falhas repetitivas que levaram a uma perda repentina de nível de água no tubulão de vapor da Caldeira. O equipamento foi inspecionado levando em consideração técnicas qualitativas e quantitativas de inspeção de equipamento, o que gerou a possibilidade de especificar o reparo. Através do reparo foi possível liberar a caldeira para produção de vapor. Com os dados da inspeção foi realizada uma análise de falha por um grupo multidisciplinar com objetivo de determinar a causa raiz dos modos de falhas detectados durante a inspeção do equipamento: espessura de isolamento térmico inadequado e operação inadequada após detecção de vazamento de água no equipamento. Ações de controle foram definidas e replicadas para as outras caldeiras dessa coqueria. Assim sendo a caldeira 22 está operando em segurança conforme especificação do projeto e com os reparos preventivos já determinados.

U.S. Borax’s mine in California’s Mojave Desert is the source of nearly half the world’s supply of refined borates. These minerals are used in hundreds of products, including essential plant nutrients that increase crop yield and quality, and safe building products that protect homes from insects and the elements. It was also recognized by its parent company, Rio Tinto, for achieving the best record among its nearly 80 worldwide mining operations. Borax’s safety performance is five times better than the national average. And its workforce recently achieved more than two million hours without a lost-time injury.

The continuing development of the nuclear industry in the United States requires a program of waste disposal that insures against the release of large amounts of radioactivity to the environment. This paper describes research on one proposed means of disposal of this waste, that of injection into geologic formations at depth. Nuclear production plant wastes were simulated and injected into samples of sedimentary rock obtained from outcrops, quarries, and deep wells. Changes in the chemical and physical characteristics of the rocks caused by the interaction of ions and suspended particles in the waste solutions with the cementing material and claylike particles in the rock are discussed. Laboratory tests show that nuclear wastes can be injected into many natural porous, permeable geologic formations. Injectivity can be maintained over a longer period by monitoring the ionic balance and particle-size distribution of waste streams. The combination of permeability and porosity with low cation-retention capacity, as exhibited by most sandstones, would satisfy the engineering requirements for the subsurface disposal of nuclear waste. Shales and clays with their low permeability and high cation-retention capacity would make excellent confining formations. The amount of cation retained by sedimentary rocks increases with increasing valence or concentration of the cation or decreasing brine concentration. The use of rock cores as model reservoirs had proved successful in determining some of the parameters that need to be considered in full-scale field disposal of wastes.

"Rapid depletion of high grade iron ores coupled with the increasing demand for the blast furnace grade iron ore in recent times has shifted the research focus on the development of appropriate technologies for the utilization of low - grade alumina rich iron ore slimes. These slimes are currently being dumped into tailing ponds owing to their high alumina content. Typical constituent minerals present in the Indian iron ore slimes are hematite, goethite, gibbsite and kaolinite. Considering the fine particle size distribution (<37 microns) in the slimes, selective dispersion-flocculation seems to be one of the most appropriate process which has been explored by us. We present our successful results on a natural iron ore slime sample obtained from one of the mines in India. We have been able to achieve a concentrate assaying >67% Fe, and <3% Al2O3 and 2.8% loss on ignition (LOI) from the slime sample assaying 60.4% Fe, 7.7% Al2O3 and 5.45% LOI with an Fe recovery of 62-69% simply by adjusting the pulp pH. We have scaled up the process to a semi batch scale as a prelude to commercialize it for the beneficiation of low grade iron ore slimes."

The important role of the petrographic microscope in the petrology of refractories is discussed, based on 45 years of industrial experience by the author. Highlights of his career are used to illustrate improvements in equipment and techniques during the period. Two specific investigations are described which emphasize the interrelated use of the petrographic microscope with other instruments such as the x-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. Emphasis is placed on the use of phase equilibrium diagrams for guidance in predicting and interpreting reactions that occur under non-equilibrium conditions in the manufacture and use of refractories.

THIS note reports a determination of the melting point of germanium, and the liquidus of the Ge-Ga alloys; lattice constants of the a phase are given. The alloys were prepared by melting germanium (>20 ohm-cm resistivity) and gallium (99.6 pct) in evacuated silica tubes. The materials (50 to 70 g) were heated at 1000°C, held in the liquid state for about ¾ hr, and then cooled rapidly in the tubes. Points on the liquidus were obtained by thermal analysis which consisted of obtaining time-temperature data during heating and cooling the materials in high purity graphite crucibles and a helium at- mosphere. Temperatures were determined with a Pt—Pt-Rh thermocouple protected by a silica sheath. The couple was calibrated against a National Bureau of Standards calibrated couple and also against the freezing points of copper, silver, aluminum, and the 28.1 wt pct Cu, 71.9 wt pct Ag alloy eutectic. The samples for X-ray analysis were prepared by heating small pieces of the ingots in evacuated glass or quartz tubes at temperatures between 600" and 900°C for periods ranging from 2 hr to 22 days, periods deemed sufficient for equilibrium to be attained, followed by quenching in water. The heat-treated samples were ground to powder for X-ray analysis. The lattice constants of the germanium-rich phase (a) were determined with a baok-reflection focusing camera. Different management options and rehabilitation strategies are available for mine wastes that produce acid mine drainage (AMD). One of them consists in building a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) on the tailings to limit the availability of oxygen, an essential component of the chemical reactions leading to the generation of AMD. Prior to cover construction, a monitoring strategy must be established to evaluate the response and performance of the cover system. The key parameters to monitor should include matric suction and volumetric water content in the CCBE, oxygen flux (and/or oxygen concentration) through and below the cover, and the main meteorological parameters for the impoundment. In this paper, different techniques available to measure the targeted parameters are described and their main properties are given. Recommendations (based on existing cases) on the location and the number of monitoring stations and on the measurement frequency for each monitored parameter are also proposed.

Batch grinding tests conducted on a gold ore indicated that gold is not randomly distributed within the size fractions of the ground ore. Since gold leaching performances were found to be dependent of the size of the gold carrying particles an integrated gold ore grinding-leaching simulator should incorporate a method to predict the gold size distribution of a ground ore. The paper describes the results obtained from batch grinding tests showing the non random distribution of gold within the size intervals of a ground ore and the initial developments of a grinding model to predict the gold size distribution in a batch grinding product.

Recently, the President of the Portland Cement Association, Robert D. Maclean, gave the keynote address at the Rock Products Eighth International Cement Industry Seminar. He said, after listing the seven plagues our industry is suffering, "none of these items I have listed is a sales or marketing problem. Further, none is a problem that can be relegated to long-term study by public or private research agencies. 1. Under the conditions of the tests described herein, the proper use of an incombustible stemming plug of the type discussed prevented ignitions of gas in all tests during the firing of 21 single shots of permissible explosive in cool. In two tests with multiple blasting (four and five shots each) no ignitions resulted. 2. The results of a few tests in this investigation and of numerous tests made previously indicate that fire-clay stemming of the same weight as an incombustible plug provides about the same degree of protection as the plug against gas ignitions during blasting of coal by permissible explosives. 3. The hazard of gas ignition on firing charges of non-permissible 40-percent gelatin dynamite in coal was reduced but not eliminated when the shot holes were stemmed with one or two incombustible plugs or with an equivalent weight of fire clay. 4. On the basis of this investigation, the Bureau of Mines considers the proper use of incombustible stemming plugs of the design tested, under the conditions of the tests described in this paper, to be of equivalent safety as the same weight of fire-clay stemming. This report does not constitute approval or disapproval of the incombustible stemming plugs by the Bureau of Mines. 5. The test data indicate that misfired charges in shot holes stemmed with the incombustible stemming plug cannot be disposed of with certainty by the procedure recommended by the manufacturer. In this investigation the misfired charges failed to detonate in 30 percent of the trials.

Knowledge of the thermal capacity of gases is of great importance in making metallurgical calculations. The metallurgist is frequeqtly called upon to investigate and determine furnace efficiencies in which the heat carried into or out of the furnace by gases is a large item in the heat balance. Not only do such problems present themselves in the determination of furnace efficiency, but also in the study of the application of heat in accessory apparatus, such as stoves, regenerators, waste-heat boilers, driers, etc. The thermal effect of the use of excess air in the combustion of fuel, the theoretical temperatures of combustion, the quantity of heat in hot blast at various temperatures, the effect of hot blast on furnace temperatures, are a few more examples of frequently occurring calorific problems involving gases. So many are the applications of the data on the heat capacity of gases that the subject merits careful study. The heat in a gas maybe due to its heat of combustion, if it is a combustible gas, and to its temperature. The latter is called its sensible heat and is the heat absorbed or evolved by a gas as its temperature is raised or lowered. The heat of combustion of gases is well established and is commonly known. The values can be found in almost any modern treatise on metallurgy. The sensible heat of gases has not been so well established because it is in most cases a function of the temperature, and the values of specific heats of gases over a wide range of temperatures have only recently been determined. Situated in north-west Queensland, Australia, the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) has been producing copper and gold since 1996. Owned and operated by Glencore Xstrata, ore is currently sourced from a newly developed underground sublevel cave (SLC) mine below the old EHM open pit (the pit). Ore feed to the concentrator is supplemented by satellite open pits comprising the Mount Margaret operation.The transition from open pit to a producing underground mine involved a complex extraction sequence for the first two production sublevels on RL1650 and RL1625. Underground mining during cave initiation was further complicated when south wall instability prevented completion of the final open pit shell. The transition mining phase included mass firing of an inclined crown pillar between the initial SLC void and the pit followed by a combination of transverse and longitudinal SLC mining.The inclined crown pillar mass firing was the first significant milestone in the extraction of the transition ore block. Comprising approximately 890 000 t of in situ material; 70 000 m of drilling was charged with 351 t of emulsion and 6026 electronic detonators to initiate the single mass firing. The firing contained five direction changes over 19 seconds making it one of the largest and most complex underground blasts ever conducted in Australia.Risk management was integrated into every facet of the technical and operational planning and execution of the transition mining phase, whilst maintaining daily mine construction and production commitments. "Surveying, and as a result, surveyors, have been around since the start of time, and it has been said that so has their methodology!The theodolite and tape have been the backbone of a time-tested practice that has led to ground breaking advancements such as electronic distance measurement (EDM), global positioning system (GPS) and positional laser scanning. However, it was the introduction of the unmanned aerial system (UAS) that has allowed mine sites such as St Ives to take the next step towards truly turning survey data into metadata.This paper will explain how the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was adapted to meet the requirements of a mine site supporting a major open pit operation, and how the open pit mining team adjusted their planning and production processes to maximise use of the extra data and information available to them.The advantages of the system include point cloud surveys with corresponding large-scale up-to-date photography and computer generated high detail contouring of mined areas that are then incorporated into the mine plan. All the while, the use of the UAV must be tailored to each specific problem encountered and a solution then matched.Citation:Steven, R, 2016. This section presents highlights of world economic and mineral industry performance in 1982, a year characterized by continued recession, and selected 1983 forecasts of economic indicators of importance to the mineral industry, some of which indicate a modest improvement in the economies of the United States and Western Europe. The U.S. Economy in 1982 In 1982 U.S. gross national product (GNP) in current dollars increased at a rate of 4 percent, but GNP adjusted for inflation (real GNP) declined at a rate of 1.8 percent. Yearend 1982 real GNP was at roughly the same level as in 1980 (table 1). Thus no growth in real terms had taken place in the United States during the 1980-82 period.

Several experiments were conducted to determine the rates of heat transfer coefficients of CaO-SiO2-A1203-FeO slags at temperatures in the range 1623-1823 K The experimental technique involved measuring heating rates of a solid specimen, sub¬merged in slag phase, using a temperature probe made of Pt\ 10%Rh-Pt. Effect of %FeO (3-10%), %FeS (0.1-0.68%), %P205 (0.2-3.0%), %MgO(5-6%), and %MnO (0.96-3.84%) present in the slag on overall heat transfer coefficient, U, of slags was investigated. Simple first order heat balance equation in combination with experimental plots rising temperature of solid specimen versus time were employed to determine the values of U. The values of U determined in the present investigation were present in the range of 70-260 cal/Ks.m2. The value of U increased with increasing the slag temperature. The values of U were not effected by increased amounts of sulfur in the slag phase. The increased concentrations of MgO, FeO, MnO, and P205 in the slag phase decreased the values of U. On the other hand, the increased amounts of Fe2O3 in the slag phase increased the value of U. Comparison of the results, obtained using the slag bath stirred by argon injection, with those determined without any stirring indicated that both radiative and conductive heat transfer mechanisms are important even at high temperatures.
