Barrick's growth and development plan will add three major new mines during 2005 including the Lagunas Norte Project in the La Libertad Province of Peru, the Veladero Project in the San Juan province of Argentina, and the Tulawaka Mine in north¬western Tanzania. Lagunas Norte and Veladero are similar in that they are both green-field open pit deposits at elevations over 4,000 meters above sea level, with two stage crushing and heap leaching followed by Merrill Crowe zinc precipitation for precious metal recovery. Operating sites will each generate in excess of 700,000 ozs Au per annum with commissioning and full scale operation planned during the third and fourth quarter of 2005. Details with regards to regional geography, development schedule, production and process specifics for Lagunas Norte and Veladero will be discussed in this presentation providing an overview for the respective properties.

The paper presents the results of the research on the development of gravity concentrates processing technology (gold grade is from 50 g/t to 1 kg/t and over) using intensive cyanidation with gold recovery to pregnant solutions followed by precipitation of metals from them using various methods. Test work and pilot plant results confirm that a new developed hydrodynamic regime provides an efficient treatment of gravity concentrates of polydisperse composition without their grinding and preliminary desliming. The resulting pregnant and washing solutions are amenable to metals recovery using electrowinning, cementation onto zinc dust and CIS. Cone plants with a lower ball valve for cyanidation of unground gravity concentrates developed by IRGIREDMET JSC have been successfully tested at a number of Russian operations. Currently, a modular plant equipped with gold electric precipitation from pregnant solution unit is successfully operated at a Russian gold processing plant. Cyanidation of the resulting high-grade gravity concentrate is carried out at the concentration of 8-10 g/L NaCN and 10 g/L NaOH. Gold recovery to the solution is 97-98%. Electrowinning is carried out in flow cell GNC-40M. In this case, the residual gold concentration yield is 0.3-0.5 mg/L. Also, a modular plant for relatively low-grade middlings (50-100 g/t Au) of gravity concentration has been introduced. The concentration of NaCN and NaOH is 2-3 g/L and 1.5-2 g/L, respectively, during leaching. This plant is equipped with a unit for gold cementation from pregnant solution with zinc dust. This cementation unit is of original design. It is made in the form of a filtering device and is composed of several layers of carbon fiber which contacts with zinc powder. The residual gold concentration yield from a cementation unit is less than 0.1 mg/L. Gold recovery is 93-97%. In 2017-2018, the introduction of intensive cyanidation modular plants to gravity concentrates will be planned at new projects of Russia and the CIS.

In a visionary move, the Planning Commission and the Ministry for Planning in Western Australia decided to invite three extractive industry quarry operators, local government councils and State Government departments (Minerals and Energy, Environmental Protection, South West Development Commission) to contribute jointly to study the impacts of blasting on areas surrounding basalt quarries in the Bunbury region of WA. The results of the study will help establish suitable zones in which land uses will be controlled under a proposed Greater Bunbury Region Scheme and in local planning schemes, to minimise conflicting land uses. This paper discusses the blasting program conducted to characterise and model the vibration behaviour of the rock under the effects of pilot-scale and full production blasting, and highlights some of the benefits achievable when a thorough blasting impact program and assessment is conducted at the planning stages of land-use establishment.

"The safe ocean transport of bulk commodities like iron ore, coal, nickel ore, manganese ore and bauxite by large bulk ships is vitally dependent on the stability of the cargo under the influence of wave induced ship motion. Safety standards are set by such bodies as the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) with recommended tests for the assessment of bulk commodities. Since the 1960s, the bulk cargo code (BC Code) commenced defining methods to determine the Transportable Moisture Limit (TML) for transportation of bulk commodities. By the latter part of the 1960s, three TML test methods were defined, namely the Flow Table, Proctor-Fagerberg and Penetration tests. All three tests were predominantly aimed at determining TML values for mineral concentrates.More recently, bulk commodity producers, Maritime Organisations and Port Authorities worldwide have been investigating whether commodity based TML methods better reflect realistic safe ship transportation than the current concentrate based TML test methods. In these investigations, the relationship between the mineralogical and particulate parameters of specific commodities with respect to cargo stability and moisture retention has provided insights into the development of tailored TML test methods. To this end, an AMIRA International project (P1097) undertaken by CSIRO, TUNRA Bulk Solids, the University of Newcastle and the University of Auckland assisted the IMO Technical Working group to investigate the relationship between iron ore fines characteristics and a new TML test specific for iron ore fines bulk cargoes.A review of the three standard concentrate based TML methods and characterisation studies of iron ore fines, as well as cyclic triaxial testing to determine liquefaction resistance, resulted in the development of a modified Proctor-Fagerberg method for determining the TML of iron ore fines. Of particular importance in determining TML is mineral composition, porosity, particle density and allowing time for moisture equilibration."

"Conventional wisdom is that gold not assayable is not recoverable or does not exist. There has been no formal study on the possibility that gold assays using advanced spectroscopy such as mass spectrometry and neutron activation could grossly underestimate the gold recoverable by proprietary extraction techniques. Such gold is not considered here to be æinvisibleÆ to detection but rather æabnormalÆ or ædistortedÆ at atomic level. Large-scale extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores has not been demonstrated, hence this emerging field still lacks credibility and acceptance. For fear of harming their reputation, few academic researchers or companies are expected to venture into this field until it is well proven. This paper aims to create awareness amongst metallurgists of the potential of æabnormalÆ gold ores by reviewing unconventional observations, the pseudoscience mainly available in non-peer reviewed web sites, and hypotheses for the recovery of ænon-assayableÆ gold, including: the occurrence of high levels of nano-sized gold in clays detectable by high-precision analytical instruments, which represents æinvisibleÆ gold accounts of ambient transmutation of elements, mainly using thermal methods orbitally rearranged monoatomic elements (ORMEs), which are virtually undetectable by conventional means, and their conversion to normal metals the possibility of a æhigh spinÆ state of transition metals the formation of microclusters altering the chemical behaviour of gold and the possibility of clustering with other elements. It is suggested here that gold in ores displays a range of clustering, from ænormalÆ gold amenable to conventional extraction to the ORME state. The concepts of æintermolecular waterÆ in forming complex salts locking up precious metals, electro-dissolution in strong acids, and electrowinning at both the anode and cathode are discussed as a means of treating æabnormalÆ gold ores. It is also possible that the gas phase extraction of gold chlorides under controlled temperature and pressure conditions, as well as transferred-arc plasma fuming of gold through carbothermic reduction of sulfides, could be used as a basis for extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores.CITATION:van Deventer, J S J, 2013. There used to be a time when bins were designed for total volume and placed in any available place of the plant. Poke holes were provided and feed was maintained by manual prodding, lancing, hammering, and by various mechanical flow-profiting devices. Little thought was given to what occurred inside the bins and why materials did not flow. Indeed, such mental effort was hard to justify while low-cost manual labor was plentiful, quality standards low, and rates of feed moderate. The past fifteen years have seen a drastic change in these conditions. We all know that labor for hard manual work is becoming unavailable at any wage, level. Standards of product uniformity are continuously rising. This uniformity is just as important in a fine ore feed to ball mills as it is in a cattle feed or in a flour mix. Rates of feed now frequently exceed 2,000 tons per hour per feeder. At that rate there is no time for, lancing or prodding. An efficient storage, plant contains a known available volume of bulk solid, and feeds it at the required time, at the prescribed rate, and without degradation of the product. A storage bin may also perform other functions such as blending of different grades, degasification of aerated, powders, isolation of different gaseous media. A contact bed of particles flowing by gravity in counter-current with a gas or liquid may be used as a continuous reactor. Gas or liquid pressures can be simply contained by, a sufficient head of flowing solid.

A copper-gold project has required a number of trade-off studies underpinned by test work to settle on pragmatic flowsheets and throughputs to support a pre-feasibility study that provides a compelling financial case. The primary trade-off studies were based on the mine schedule, ore type feed-grade recovery relationships, likely concentrate grades and typical marketing terms as well as the estimated capital and operating costs for a range of throughputs and mining strategies. Secondary trade-off studies were conducted for specific circuits and additional processing options. Although the details of these studies are not presented, the technical options and subsequent flowsheets are discussed. While the flowsheets will be optimised during the feasibility study stage, the basis is now fixed for the four ore types that would be mined from the copper-gold orebody. The ore types, resulting from a strong weathering profile, exhibit a wide range of copper mineralisation and gold associations, as well as gangue types. They display a range of characteristics that necessitated a nuanced approach to flowsheet development. The primary separation techniques that have been employed include gravity, classification, flotation and leaching while a range of comminution methods have been selected to suit the properties of the ore types. While technical issues are important factors in terms of maximising the quality of separations, recoveries and revenues, attention to material handling, equipment characteristics, the mine schedule, and capital and operating costs are equally important considerations for settling upon a suitable and robust flowsheet. Since 1964, Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd., has been developing and using production scheduling methods for optimizing its metallurgical operations in the short term (up to one year). Medium-range metallurgical planning has been possible only by successive evaluations of a single-year LP. A modified version of Rosenbrock's direct search technique has now been developed to allow multi-year optimization of both mining and metallurgy for medium-range planning. The modifications to the search technique have produced a marked increase in computational efficiency for this heavily constrained problem in many variables and the system is a usable planning tool, given a reasonably powerful computer. The plans are 'optimum' in the sense that they yield the maximum present value of the operations. Each of the resulting five-yearly mine plans forms the basis for further detailed metallurgical evaluation by the established production scheduling system.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and six EPRI-member utilities are sponsoring research to define relationships between coal properties and coal handling behavior. Deratings and outages caused by plugged chutes or bunkers or frozen coal can cost utilities millions of dollars annually in lost energy production as well as in manpower to restore coal flow. There is also the added expense of maintaining redundant equipment to assure a continuous coal feed to the boiler, a common practice for utilities. Over the past two years, researchers at CQ Inc. and Iowa state university have collected and analyzed coal samples to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals for their power plants. These coal samples cover ranges in ash content, rank, grindability, size distribution, and moisture content--properties that affect the handling behavior of coals. Other properties, such as the washability and ash composition, are measured as well. Over the remaining two years of the project, all of these analyses will be correlated to handling behavior, measured using a triaxial shear tester that determines the strength of a coal under compression. An index will be developed and validated at host utility power plants.

Integrating seismic reflection, borehole geophysical, and physical rock property studies is an effective means of mapping lithological contacts and structures in the crystalline crust. At Les Mines Selbaie in the northern volcanic zone of the Late Archean Abitibi Subprovince, a high-frequency seismic reflection profile has provided the first images of deep crustal structures of this important polymetallic mine site. Physical rock property and borehole geophysical studies confirm that prominent seismic reflections can be caused by lithological contacts, faults and sulphide mineralization. At Les Mines Selbaie, the first two of these are shown by this study. Clearly identifiable reflection images from sulphide mineralization have not been demonstrated in analysis of the profile. The seismic images provide useful information about gross structure in the vicinity of Les Mines Selbaie. They can also place important constraints on the sequence of tectonic events and, therefore, can aid future deep exploration programs.

Low-temperature heat capacities and standard enthalpy of formation of copper difluoride (CuF2) were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The low-temperature heat capacities were determined from 11 to 302 K by adiabatic calorimetry. The enthalpy of formation was determined by HC1 solution calorimetry. The standard values of entropy (S°) and enthalpy of formation (?Hf°) at 298.15 K are l8.65±0.03 cal/deg mole and -129.02±0.29 kcal/mole, respectively.

The Albany Conglomerate is a widespread geological unit found in northern areas of Auckland, New Zealand. It has previously been described as part of the early Miocene Waitemata Group which underlies most of Auckland. Much of the Waitemata Group comprises weak interbedded sandstones and mudstones, but also includes conspicuous conglomeratic units such as the Albany Conglomerate. The Albany Conglomerate comprises a well-cemented mixture of hard pebbles, cobbles and boulders of igneous and metamorphic derivation in lenticular beds. A number of tunnelling projects are planned for the near future in Auckland. Recent experience has shown that the variable features associated with the Albany Conglomerate can make selecting appropriate construction methods very challenging. This paper explores the engineering geological and sedimentological features of the Albany Conglomerate with respect to other conglomerates within the Waitemata Group and the potential implications on tunnelling projects in Auckland. This paper addresses strategic investment decisions when they are nested in a project development format where each project is implemented in phases and each phase is approved to move on to the next phase only if certain technical and economic requirements are met. This configuration is sometimes referred to as a ?Project Portfolio?. Mining companies maintain project portfolios in their exploration investment plan. This study proposes a procedure to best manage an exploration project portfolio including technical and economic uncertainties. The procedure may support decision makers in a simple and intuitive way, while maintaining the rigor and precision required by the rather large amount of financial resources typically called for by mining projects. The procedure was tested in a real case study of a gold mining company and its exploration projects portfolio. The procedure uses the following approaches: i) investment valuation methods under technical and market uncertainties based on Option Pricing Model, Real Option Theory and Option Space; ii) portfolio management and Stage Gate®1 method; iii) Monte Carlo simulation.

In this paper, we use a new kind of fan charateristic curve instead of the common quadratic function, and give the existence and the uniqueness of the solutions to the ventilation network controlling equations, so that the existence and the uniqueness of the solutions for the natural air distributting problem can be conveniently given. We also give a conjugate gradient method with the global convergence to solve the equations having the unique solution. Because we adopt a very efficient technique of one dimensional search (or linear search) in this method, the method can quickly solve a lot of problems, especially in large scale problems. The second part of this paper is the establishment of the model of the constrained quadratic programming for the measurement adjustment of mine ventilation network. We give the algorithm to solve this model as well. The two algorithms given above have been realized in the mic-computer MC-68000 with Fortran codes, and the numerical results are satisfactory.

Large-scale methane releases in dual salt mines have resulted in ignitions and mine fatalities as recently as 1979. Several past studies have implied that hazardous methane occurrences in U.S. salt domes are distributed neither uniformly nor randomly, but are geologically controlled and potentially predictable. A first step by the Bureau of Mines in addressing the problem of methane in deal salt mines required development of a new test to determine volumes of gases in solid salt samples. This report considers the results achieved when 80 deal salt samples were tested for gas content by dissolution in a controlled atmosphere chamber. Criteria were organized to delineate salt types based on geological occurrence. Outburst samples range from 0.014 to 7.4 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl, anomalous salt samples from 0.0027 to 2.6 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl, and normal salts from less than 0.0003 to 0.31 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl. The presence of higher hydrocarbons was most common in samples containing larger quan¬tities of methane. The presence of higher hydrocarbons appears to be useful in detecting methane hazards where some methane may be lost before gas content testing. An exploratory rotary and/or core drilling program, dissolution testing for gas content, and up-to-date geologic mine napping could allow a mine operator to assess methane hazards in dual salt.

Extraction of zinc from chloride solution with dibutyl butylphosphonate (DBBP) in Escaid 110 has been investigated. The distribution coefficient of zinc was found to be independent of equilibrium pH. This independence indicates that the mechanism of the extraction may be solvation. Slope analysis for the system of dilute zinc chloride solution reveals that two moles of DBBP react with one mole of zinc. A series of tests were conducted to bring DBBP to its full loading capacity and the analysis of the results confirms this stoichiometric factor of 2. Extraction isotherms were established by varying either the AIO ratio or the concentration of zinc in the aqueous feed. Both curves were found to be identical.

"In sheet metal forming process, the forming limit and strain distribution are governed by plastic instability and fracture following strain localization. It has been proved that the temperature gradient caused by plastic deformation as well as friction is one of the crucial factors to induce the strain localization in high-speed metal forming processes. In this paper, a numerical simulation of the sheet metal extrusion process has been conducted by using thermal-mechanical coupling finite element method. An improved mixed finite element method has been used to solve the large deformation elasto-plastic problem. In thermal phase, the transient heat transfer finite element method together with the Crank-Nicholson algorithm has been employed to determine the temperature field. Both the numerical results and the experimental observations reveal that the temperature gradient plays an important role in inducing the strain localization, which eventually leads to fracture failure in the sheet metal extrusion process.IntroductionSheet metal extrusion is such a process where the extrusion punch penetrates into one surface of the sheet metal material to let it extrude and flow towards the outlet of the die. This process can be used to produce protruding parts on a strip material. In engineering applications, the quality of the product is affected by many factors such as stress state, loading speed, material properties and lubrication condition. The research on failure mechanisms and improvement of formability in sheet metal forming processes by exploitation of differential thermal conditions has been of great interest recently [1-3]. It has been proved that the temperature gradient caused by plastic deformation, heat transfer, and friction between sheet and tools is one of crucial factors to affect 'the formability in high speed sheet metal forming processes [4]. In our previous study of sheet metal extrusion, it has been observed that plastic deformation is highly localized and some specimens are subjected to fracture failure in the form of crack propagation [5]. To understand this failure phenomenon, the effects of temperature gradients must not be ignored."

A procedure for optimizing the secondary cooling zone of continuous casters is proposed and illustrated by a billet caster example. The procedure consists of quantifying deviations from the required conditions of the secondary cooling zone?as far as temperatures, metallurgical length and reheating are concerned?by means of a ?cost function?. The optimal spray settings are then found by minimizing the total ?cost?. The billet caster examples serve to emphasize the importance of specifying the required conditions in a consistent manner. Some envisaged practical limitations of this approach are discussed.

The safe life cycle of a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is founded on the fundamentals of proper design, construction, operation and closure. Leinster Nickel Operations (Leinster) utilises four active TSF cells that are cycled between filling (deposition), desiccation, and construction to meet a targeted rate of rise. This results in ongoing and consistent raising of the TSF walls. Critical to maintaining the safe life cycle through this consistent wall raising is precision construction and high frequency quality assurance to ensure compliance to design requirements and TSF walls free from defects. Leinster has recently deployed Intelligent Machine Control technology for TSF construction. Advances in Intelligent Machine Control have decreased variability in construction; ensuring variations are within the tolerances of design. The Intelligent Machine Controls are programed to ensure construction conforms to design tolerances of +/-30mm. This level of accuracy provides assurance of borrow area set out, compacted layers are as per design, compaction monitoring is within the zone placed, scarification between layers to prevent lamination is maintained, and batter angles are set to the correct grade. This level of control provides certainty that construction meets the design intent. In conjunction with Intelligent Machine Control, periodic drone surveys are conducted to verify construction against design. Advancement in survey equipment and techniques allow higher frequency, high accuracy survey to be completed on demand by site based personnel. This provides quality assurance through all stages of the construction phases, as well as the final constructed wall, ensuring compliance to design. Combining Intelligent Machine Control with higher frequency quality assurance provides an increased level of certainty that the TSF construction is defect free and within quality specifications. These recent technological advancements in Construction and Quality Assurance ensure cell raises are constructed to the design intent with greater levels of accuracy and precision than ever before.

The methodology of active pulsing air separation is a new method for dry material classification. Especially, it is suitable to electronic scraps disposal and re-utilization. By studying the difference of drag coefficients of the particles moving through areas of varying Reynolds numbers, and considering the extra-mass forces acting on the particles in the active pulsing air field, models of the dynamic motion which particles follow were developed. A computer simulation was prepared that showed the traces of particles with different densities and/or diameters, but similar aerodynamic characteristics, as they moved through the turbulent flow, to modify and define the parameters of the models. The simulation was found to predict the observed results with artificial tracing spheres being separated by the laboratory equipment. The separation performance, as being affected by the particles, nature, the air velocity, the pulsing frequency and the air pattern, is discussed. In general, lower density particles are more responsive to variations in airflow velocity. In addition, an industrial scale active pulsing air separator was designed, and it provides a new and efficient method for resource re-utilization in China.
