To control these design solutions the latest generation of technological packages has been implemented like detailed solidification model based on meshless computational algorithm and a fully dynamic application of soft reduction to achieve sound internal quality results.

THIS year's Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division is a relatively rare phenomenon in the metallurgical profession; he is an expert historian of metallurgy, he is a confirmed collector and student of old works on alchemy, chemistry, and metallurgy-vide: the famous Biringuccio and he is a profound student (with a somewhat idealistic slant) of recent trends in world affairs and in what some incurable optimists call civilization; and at the same time he is still possessed of a sense of humor. Incidentally he is also one of the bestknown nonferrous metallurgists in this country and abroad, and for fifteen years has been a willing worker in A.I.M.E and the Institute of Metals Division.

Infrastructures continue to age and drinking water supplies are becoming scarce in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. (FKCI) was engaged by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to complete the River Supply Conduit Improvement Upper Reach—Unit 7 Project (RSC7). Two tunnel sections were bored using a 2.64 meter diameter Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) and a 4.12 meter diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBTBM) to excavate approximately 3,733 meters (3.7 km) of tunnels through highly abrasive late-Pleistocene-age Quaternary alluvial deposits (Old Alluvium) and Holocene age Young Alluvium deposits above the water table. This paper discusses the challenges encountered managing the TBM’s equipment degradation, use of soil conditioners, cutterhead wear, torque and advance rates while maintaining the necessary face-pressures and parameters to limit over excavation and ground settlement.

Those who have had an occasion to apply geostatistics to the estimation of ore reserves are familiar with the conventional approaches of estimating average grade of quality values for arrays of regular grid squares or blocks. Further, the technology to perform geostatistical analysis and prediction for irregular two-dimensional areas has been available in a practical, readily useable form for some time. However, the generalization of this technology into three dimensions has been hampered by lack of a suitable geometrical characterization for realistic, three dimensional shapes and volumes. The extension of these estimation techniques into three dimensions has now been made possible by a successful integration of the volume modelling capabilities of 3D Component Modelling with proven 3D Geostatistical Techniques. The result is a powerful new technique for mineral ore reserves estimation in a practical, useable form. The technique allows direct geostatistical estimation of grade and quality values for precisely defined, irregular, realistic, geological, and mining shapes or volumes. This paper describes the two technologies, their integration and their application in practice to the estimation of mineral ore reserves. The paper closes with a discussion of the benefits provided by the new approach, in terms of accuracy, efficiency and practicality.

Rapid growth in the urban development requires continuous search for innovative technologies to construct complex infrastructure systems. Deep mixing is one promising construction technology that has a wide spectrum of applications for development and expansion of complex urban facilities. Large number of reported case history of the projects in Europe, Japan, and the US demonstrate the versatility of the technology compared to conventional methods of ground modification. A large number of factors influence the quality of the soil cement columns; some of these are rooted in the installation process and the effective use of machinery during construction. This paper attempts to present some issues related to installation of deep mixing that affect quality of the treated columns. Presented here are various installation patterns, installation machinery, installation sequence, effect of penetration/withdrawal injection methods, penetration/withdrawal speed, effect of number of shafts, rotation of the blade, shape and orientation of mixing tools, and rotational speed of the shaft on quality of the treated ground.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publication Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis. Index, only if paper is long and involved. Introduction, including a brief statement of conclusion. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systemé International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. There has been disappointingly little development in the analysis of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. A brief review of literature shows that the application of numerical stress analysis methods to open pit mine slope stability has become only relatively common in recent times, and that there are as yet no standardized approaches. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardized approaches in particular, is surprising in view of the ?ultra? deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. In this paper, the results of a substantial programme of two dimensional and axisymmetric analyses of open pit slopes are described. Variations in the following parameters were taken into account in this programme: slope angle, slope height and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratio. The evaluation of the data has concentrated on the tensile stresses and the extension strains in the slopes. This is believed to be the first publication dealing with strain distributions in slopes. The occurrence of zones of tensile stress was very limited. These zones occur in the crests of slopes, except in the case of low horizontal to vertical stress ratios, in which case the tensile zone is in the floor of the pit. In contrast, very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. The large zone in which such extension failure could potentially occur in a 1200 m deep pit is typically more than 100 m horizontally behind the toe and about 400 m up the face from the toe. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning. Such ?strain bursting? produces easily measurable seismicity, events often being audible as well. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. With suitably orientated joints, extension strains are likely to manifest themselves in the opening up of such joints and hence in the loosening of the rock mass in a preferential orientation, with potential effects on groundwater flow patterns.

A demanda por tubos de aço com rigorosos requisitos de propriedades mecânicas tem crescido devido à exploração de reservas de petróleo e gás natural em regiões remotas e em ambientes hostis. Um grande desafio para as siderúrgicas é prever as alterações de propriedades mecânicas que ocorrem durante a conformação chapa/tubo, associadas ao encruamento e ao efeito Bauschinger, visando atender às especificações no tubo. Nesse estudo, foi avaliado o efeito da conformação chapa/tubo nas propriedades mecânicas do aço API X60 (TMCP). Para tal, foram realizados ensaios de tração, de impacto Charpy e de CTOD, em amostras de chapa e de tubo, e análise metalográfica, além de simulação do efeito Bauschinger por meio de ensaio cíclico compressão-tração. Os resultados dos ensaios de tração, tanto com os corpos de prova plate type quanto com round bar, apresentaram aumento da tensão limite de escoamento e redução da ductilidade, devido ao encruamento. Nos corpos de prova que sofreram aplainamento, esse aumento foi menos pronunciado, justificado pela ocorrência do efeito Bauschinger. A simulação do efeito Bauschinger confirmou a indicação de queda do limite de escoamento devido ao ciclo reverso de deformação. A tenacidade não foi fortemente afetada após a conformação do tubo.

Investment in the ferrous sector between 1981 and 1985 will total about $9 billion, or 7.6% of the state budget for capital assets. The money will primarily go to complete the first stage of the Baoshan Iron and Steel complex and to increase steel production by 3 Mt* (3.3 million st) and seamless tubing by 0.5 Mt (551,000 st). Investment in 1983 will be about $3.5 billion, a 28% increase over 1981. Although data on nonferrous investment is less specific, the Chinese announced early this spring that the country's investment would be 2.6 times greater than the average spent during the previous five year plans. Geological surveying will also be stepped up. The Ministry of Geology and Minerals recently announced it will incorporate a search for metal and mineral resources into its second round of oil and gas surveys. The Sixth Five-Year Plan desig¬nates some actual production targets. Steel is to increase to more than 72 Mt (79.4 million st). The country's production of 10 priority nonferrous metals - aluminum (and bauxite), copper, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium, and titanium - is to increase 12.7%. Top priority is to develop aluminum production. Renewed efforts are to be made to develop gold and silver production and to increase rare earth and rare metal production. By April 1983 when the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. was established, some five months after publication of the Five-Year Plan, the goals for nonferrous development had already been upgraded and changed to include: • development priority status equal to that of coal's; • an increase of more than 150% in the 1985 projected production level for the 10 top nonferrous metals (a move from the Sixth Five-year Plan's production increase of 12.7% to one of 34%); and • modification of the top 10 nonferrous metals list to include tungsten, molybdenum, and rare earths. Aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc maintained primary importance, while mercury, magnesium, and titanium were deleted. It is likely that the modification will be taken one step further and titanium will be substituted for antimony. China has already indicated its intentions to stabilize rather than expand its antimony industry, while press reports play up the titanium industry's importance to the country's development. In addition, the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. announced that it expects to register a progressive annual increase of 4% in foreign currency earnings through export. China's nonferrous development efforts, therefore, appear two-pronged. First, the country's efforts will be directed toward self-sufficiency in its four major process and primary metals - aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead - and a number of other nonferrous metals that are in increasing demand by its light industry sector. At present, 96% of China's non¬ferrous consumption is composed of aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc. Substantial portions of that must be imported to meet rising demand. Second, efforts will concentrate on those metals that can be developed the fastest and are in "urgent demand" on the international market. Metals such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, and rare earths will be given freer use of foreign capital and technology to increase production levels and raise quality. Examples of some projects in the area include upgrading the country's carbide industry and developing new high speed and tool steels to meet international standards. For the last four years, the Kilborn Group of Companies has been involved in several major projects in the Confederation of Independent States (CIS). These include the Kumtor project, the Kubaka gold project, the Kazgold project, the Aginskoe project and the Jerooy project. These projects are all in various stages of detailed engineering and construction. Western mining companies are pursuing mining opportunities throughout the world in search of ore bodies for development. The quest for profitable mining ventures has led mining companies to South America and Asia and, more recently, to the former Soviet Union. When considering the CIS, several factors should be considered. The most notable are geography, mining culture and previous mining production.

Geostatistical modelling aims at providing unbiased estimates of the grades of elements of economic interest in mining operations, and assessing the associated uncertainty in these resources and reserves. Conventional practice consists of using the data as error-free values and performing the typical steps of data analysis - domaining, semivariogram analysis, and estimation/simulation. However, in many mature deposits, information comes from different drilling campaigns that were sometimes completed decades ago, when little or no quality assurance and quality control (QA/AC) procedures were available. Although this legacy data may have significant sampling errors, it provides valuable information and should be combined with more recent data that has been subject to strict QA/QC procedures. In this paper we show that ignoring the errors associated with sample data considerably underestimates the uncertainty (and consequently the economic risk) associated with a mining project. We also provide a methodology to combine data with different sampling errors, thus preserving the relevant global and local statistics. The method consists of constructing consistent simulated sets of values at the sample locations, in order to reproduce the error of each drilling campaign and the spatial correlation of the grades. It is based on a Gibbs sampler, where at every sample location, the actual sample value (with error) is removed and a conditional distribution is calculated from simulated values at nearby sample locations. A value is drawn from that distribution and kept only if it satisfies some statistical requirements-specifically, the global relative error and local means and variances must be reproduced. All sample locations are visited and simulated sample values are generated iteratively, until the required statistics are satisfactorily attained over all sample locations. This generates one realization of possible sample values, respecting the fact that the actual samples are known to carry an error given by the global relative error. Multiple realizations of simulated sample values can be obtained by repeating the procedure. At the end of this procedure, at every sample location a set of simulated sample values is available that accounts for the imprecision of the information. Furthermore, within each realization, the simulated sample values are consistent with each other, reproducing the spatial continuity and local statistics. These simulated sets of sample values can then be used as input to conventional simulation on a full grid to assess the uncertainty in the final resources over large volumes. The methodology is presented and demonstrated using a synthetic data-set for clarity.

Visiting Spring Canyon, a historic coal mining district near Helper, Utah, I was impressed by the great accomplishments that had taken place there. A tour book of the region tells of a period that began in the early 1900's, when the land was still very much the Old West, when settlers lived out their lives in coal company towns and produced a resource that was to build a nation (Cunningham, F., 1990). Between 1912 and the early 1970's, 11 mines had come and gone in that narrow canyon less than 15 kilometers long. Spring Canyon is a historic district now, but I could not dwell too long on the richness of its history. I was there to look for evidence of PCBs.

For several years the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Air Materiel Command, U. S. Air Force, has been studying zirconium alloys. A preliminary survey of these alloys has been completed and reported as a Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations. 4/ Originally the purpose was to determine the suitability of zirconium alloys in medium-temperature applications. However, data also were obtained on other properties of these alloys, and later the scope was broadened to include amore detailed investigation of a selected group. The zirconium-titanium system was one of those chosen. The Bureau of Mines has been instrumental in the commercial development of both of these metals and has constructed pilot plants for the production of titanium at Boulder City, Nev., and for zirconium at Albany, Oreg. Both elements are in subgroup A, fourth series of the periodic table, and therefore have many properties in common. Since both have similar atomic structures and lattice dimensions the possibility of extended mutual solubility seemed likely. Inc transition-point diagram of Fast indicated that the two metals are completely miscible in all proportions in both the alpha and beta forms.

The concept and practices of co-extraction of coal and methane have emerged in recent years to improve coal mining safety and productivity, utilise methane resources, and reduce fugitive emissions in environments that involve multiple coal seams with low gas permeability. The system of co-extraction integrates two previously separate operations of coal extraction and methane drainage. The coal mining operation reduces the coal seam gas pressure and creates strata fractures that enhance gas migration and capture from mine workings and surrounding coal seams. An effective methane drainage operation produces a consistent and quality clean energy product and, at the same time, reduces the methane concentration in underground workings and the methane content and pressure in the adjacent coal seams. This is a significant benefit in preventing gas explosions and outbursts, and promotes a safer and more productive coal mining environment. In addition, the co-extraction with enhanced utilisation of coal mine methane directly leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Presented in this paper are key results and outcomes of a major Asia Pacific Partnership project carried out from 2008?2012 by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in collaboration with Huainan Mining Industry (Group) Co. Ltd., to develop and demonstrate advanced technologies at Pansan mine, Huainan, that promote the concept and practices of co-extraction of coal and methane. A comprehensive approach was adopted to assess fundamental strata and coal seam methane conditions during mining, and optimise mining sequences and coal mine methane capture systems. The project has not only demonstrated a practical approach and procedures of advanced co-extraction of coal and methane systems but also delivered significant benefits and outcomes in improved mining safety and efficiency, increased methane capture and utilisation, and reduced fugitive methane emissions at the Pansan mine. The total mine gas drained increased from 25.36 Mm3 in 2007 to 47.0 Mm3 in 2011, and the mine gas utilisation increased from 4.94 Mm3 in 2007 to 21.15 Mm3 in 2011. The improved methane capture resulted in reduced coal and gas outburst risks and methane concentration levels at the mine workings, provided a safe working environment for coal production, boosted the mining efficiency, and eliminated methane related incidents over the last few years at Pansan mine.

I would like to thank you for spending the time with me today to review the FLIR PathFindIR thermal imaging camera system: It is truly an innovative safety system that has the added benefit of offering increased efficiency Our company the Winsted Group, specializes in mobile video systems that are fully customizable to address standard and unique operational requirements in a variety of industries from heavy equipment cameras to police and military digital recording systems, high end video camera systems are a hallmark of Winsted?s product line. The use of thermal imaging camera systems to enhance mobile safety is a relatively new concept as it relates to their use in both transportation and heavy equipment operation. This technology, like so many before it, has been adopted for civilian use from its military roots. The identification of enemy combatants through their heat signature has given our troops a decisive edge in military operations in total darkness Likewise, the ability to discern people and objects that give off heat is a significant step forward in collision and accident avoidance. The PathFindIR camera system that I am demonstrating today is so advanced that it cannot be exported outside of continental North America without a US government approved export license I would like to commence my presentation with a short video clip that discusses the technology associated with the FLIR PathFindIR Thermal Imaging camera systems. The video demonstrates the operational effectiveness of thermal imaging camera systems installed on a vehicle operating on the roadway at night, of course there are definite parallels to use in a mining environment, primarily the fact that lighting is limited and the chance for vision limiting dust is ever present. We are, of course more concerned with personnel safety in our mines than encountering wildlife on the roadside. From the same perspective, the transport driver is just as concerned with encountering a stalled vehicle as our mine truck operators are with other mine traffic.

The petroleum refining industry makes extensive use of catalysts for the conversion of crude oils into more usable products such as gasoline, fuel oil and gas, aromatics, and others. Catalysts used for hydraprocessing contain cobalt-molybdenum or nickel -molybdenum, although there are catalysts that also contain tungsten. During hydroprocessing, nickel and vanadium are deposited on the catalysts, eventually rendering them inactive. The refiners are then confronted with the problem of disposing the spent catalysts. In the past, landfilling was a common method of disposal and it is still practiced in some countries. Other refiners prefer to stockpile the spent catalysts at the refineries until the price of metals warrants their sale to metal reclaimers. This practice, however, poses environmental problems to the refineries for storage and disposal of spent catalysts. Other types of catalysts are amenable to regeneration. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the recovery of nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium, and alumina from spent hydroprocessing catalysts by Gulf Chemical and Metallurgical Corporation and to review the use of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate for pressure leaching of spent catalysts.

Gold was initially discovered at Ballarat in 1851. After initial alluvial mining, underground quartz mining commenced in 1853, continuing until 1918. The historic miners were considered to be capable of mining anywhere in the world after overcoming the difficult conditions within the Ballarat goldfields. Whilst mining has changed dramatically since the early 1900s the challenges with underground mining at Ballarat have not. Modern pumping systems cope with the moderate water inflows. However, modern machinery and efficient mining methods influence opening sizes and extraction techniques. In some cases modern techniques have accentuated the challenging ground conditions and complex orebodies that were faced by the historic miners. As the Ballarat East project has progressed towards production, technical challenges relating to geomechanics and mine planning are being resolved resourcefully.

Bureau of Mines research on the hydrogenation of coal has been concerned with developing processes that could be used to supplement the Nation's petroleum and natural gas resources. Motor fuel was produced in a subsidized coal hydrogenation industry in Europe prior to 1945, but the process used is still not economical and other methods of producing liquid and gaseous fuels from coal are being investigated. As an aid to the planning of coal hydrogenation research, a literature survey was made of processes or methods of hydrogenating coal that differ from the subsidized or conventional process. This report contains a bibliography of unconventional methods of hydrogenating coal and a brief discussion of the economics of the conventional method. A general discussion of unconventional methods is included, and the advantages and disadvantages are pointed out where possible. The survey supplements a previous Bureau of Mines survey3 and a comprehensive review published in 1930.4
