During the various stages of iron & steel production a number of iron-rich by-products are generated. The traditional way to recycle them back to the blast furnace has been the balling - sintering process. These by-products can also be made into cement-bonded agglomerates for use as burden material for blast furnaces. In order to improve the quality of agglomerates the effects of various processing parameters on the properties of cement-bonded briquettes have to be controlled. This paper looks into the various aspects of producing cement-bonded agglomerates and using them as burden material for blast furnaces.

PURSUANT to a recommendation made by the Section delegates at their conference at the Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. last February, the Directors, at their meeting on March 15, 1944, appointed a committee charged with the duty of investigating the present status of licensing and registration of engineers, and to make a report on the whole subject for the information of the mining fraternity. The committee consisted of E. W. Ellis, chairman, H. D. Keiser, Henry T. Mudd, J. J. Croston, and Simon Strauss. Messrs. Keiser and Strauss were unable to assist in the work of the committee, and Mr. Mudd was forced to resign in July, his place being taken by A. F. Greaves-Walker. Able assistance was given the committee by T. Keith Legare, executive secretary of the National Council of State Boards of Engineering Examiners, and by Ed. ward Larson, executive secretary of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The accompanying somewhat condensed version of the report of Mr. Ellis's committee, dated Oct. 15, 1944, is confined to facts rather than to recommendations. The "Model Law" to which reference is made was first drafted by repre¬sentatives of six national engineering societies in 1911. It has since been amended many times, the latest version dated June 1943 is recommended to the State Licensing Boards as a pattern for formulating or amending state laws. An intensified search for gas, because of the shortage in the area, led to the completion of 482 wells in southwestern Pennsylvania during 1944. This number was 27 more than the number in 1943, but 118 of the wells were nonproductive. Shallow Development Oil The initial production of the 25 producers completed was slightly less than was obtained from four wells above last yearJs total. The largest well, 20 bbl., was found in the Big Injun (Miss.) sand in Morris township, Washington County, at a depth of 2085 ft. It is currently producing about 3 bbl. per day. Outside the main producing area, a well drilled in Nicholson township, Fayette County, obtained 15 bbl. per day from 1864 to 1866 ft. in the Gantz (U. Dev.) sand. The Federal subsidy of 75¢ per barrel, effective , 1, 1944, which increased to $3.40 the current pipe-line price in this area, seems to have been insufficient stimulus to materially increase drilling for oil, although more repressuring operations are contemplated. Gas The volume of initial open flow of gas developed is off slightly over 10 million cu. ft. from 36 more wells than were completed a year ago, and the average rock pressure of this new gas is more than 100 lb. less than that obtained a year ago. Apparently the best find of this year was reported in Patton township, Allegheny County, where an initial volume of over 4 million cu. ft, was encountered in the Speechley (U. Dev.) sand at a depth of from 3293 to 3303 ft. The rock pressure there, 1190 lb. per sq. in., is nearly virgin. However, this area is fairly well delimited by dry holes and docs not seem nearly so promising from the standpoint of reserves as the Armbrust area, which was discovered several Years ago. In the patton township locality another fair well with 1303 M cu. ft. open flow and 400 lb. Per 59. in. rock pressure completed in the Hundred-Foot (U. Dev.) sand at a a depth of 2125 feet. Armstrong County, as usual, leads in number of producing wells completed with lowest percentage of failures but ranks only fou th in volume of production developed. Only two wells here had more than one million cubic feet capacity, but the rock pessure was under 200 Ib. Per sq. inch. In Fayette County, where the largest portion of new gas was found, activity appears to be shifting eastward. In Luzerne township, four producers having a total combined initial open flow in excess of 10 million cu, ft, were found in the Big Injun (Miss.) sand. The best well was found also in the same area in the Speechley sand (U. Dev.) at a depth of 3460 ft. This was a 2500-M CU. ft. well in Georges township. Several wells of more than a million cubic feet capacity were found in Jackson, Washington, Wayne and Whitley townships, Greene County. None of these, however, was in a new pool.

The Santa Rita copper deposit first served as a source of native copper for Indian implements and weapons. In 1801 Santa Rita copper, trans- ported by mule train to Chihuahua, began to be used commercially for making coins. It was a small- scale operation made difficult by Indian raids, transportation costs and depletion of the higher grade ores. There was, moreover, no known method for economically extracting copper from the under- lying low grade sulfide ores. Originally, copper and copper oxide ores were mined by underground methods, but there was virtually no development of the deposit-which became United States territory after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848-for almost a hundred years. A number of small underground mines had been started during that time, but it was not until 1873 that all the principal claims were consolidated under one control.

The annual ICGCM China was initiated in 2014. Up to 2023, ICGCM China has been held 9 times. In the 9 conferences during the past 10 years, about 559 papers in 17 topical areas were presented and attendance ranged from 200+ to 400+ each conference. The 42nd ICGCM China was held in Xiangtan, Hunan, China, 10/20–10/22/2023. There were 86 papers presented in 26 topical areas. In addition, an MS and PhD Research Forum was held concurrently with 36 papers presented by MS and PhD candidates in mining engineering from 8 schools. The conference plays an important role in cultivating advanced degree student talents. In this paper, all 559 papers reviewed previously were summarized. In addition, the 42nd ICGCM China is used to illustrate the current and future development trends of coal mine ground control in China. It summarizes the 122 papers (including 36 MS and PhD forum papers) grouping into, and in terms of, 26 topical areas. In addition, its unique and innovative subject areas, short summary of developments as well as conference strengths and shortcomings will also be presented.

The discovery of rich alluvial diamond deposits on Namibia?s Skeleton Coast in 1908 began a period of intense exploration and mining off the coastal sand; and shallow surf zones. In the mid-60s a Texas entrepreneur, Sam Rollins took the search to the seafloor. The inhospitable conditions encountered made the early going difficult. After a slow start, the past 10 years have seen much progress in geologist?s understanding of the deposition mechanics and the use of sophisticated geo-physical and sampling techniques to aid in the discovery of economic deposits. Diamondfields, in a joint venture with BHP and Benguela Concessions, began an exploration program in 1994 for sea-bed diamonds off the Port of Luderitz in Namibia. This program has progressed to a mine development program with the potential of creating a 500,000 carat per year operation. The mining technologies being considered include state-of-the-art, remotely operated sea-bed crawlers and high volume dredges feeding to semi-mobile processing platforms. The company's objective is to use the best proven technology to create an environmentally responsible operation with the lowest fixed operating costs and the longest and safest weather operating window of any offshore operator working Africa's diamond coast.

A team consisting of junior and senior mechanical engineering students at New Mexico Tech worked on the design of an explosively loaded vessel, with a maximum load of 15 grams (0.53 oz) TNT equivalent explosive. The main challenge presented was to meet the stringent sample positioning specification of 3 microns in two Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) and one degree of rotation in a third DOF. This is to accommodate precise sample placement in a tight x-ray beam, and to bring areas such as explosives/metal interfaces into magnified field-of-view photography. This presentation describes the process and design decisions to arrive at the final product presented to LANL in December 2014. Our engineering analysis techniques will be reviewed, including use of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiling & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Code Case for Impulse Loaded Pressure Vessels (ASME BPVC Code Case 2564-3). Also discussed will be integration of Hydrocode computer models with Finite Element Method analysis.

For the purpose of clarifying the reason caused a drastic decrease of discharge capacity for MmNi3.6Mn0.4Al0.3Co0.7 electrode at relatively low temperatures, various factors influencing the charge-discharge processes were investigated in the temperature range of 25°C to -40°C. The charge efficiency obviously decreased at low temperatures less than 0°C due to a decrease in the rate of the charge-transfer reaction on the electrode surface. Moreover, both the rate of the hydrogen diffusion from the alloy bulk to surface and the rate of the charge-transfer reaction significantly influenced the high-rate dischargeability. The addition of Mo to MmNi3.6Mn0.4Al0.3Co0.7 alloy was found to be effective for improving the electrocatalytic activity, leading to the improvements of the charge efficiency and the high-rate dischargeability at relatively low temperatures.

There is a growing interest in Magnetoelectric (ME) materials in view of both fundamental understanding and novel desirable applications. The application potential for multiferroic materials with the possibility of reversing the magnetization by applying an electric field (or vice versa) is quite promising especially in data storage application. The rare earth ortho-ferrites (REFeO3), such as NdFeO3, have been studied extensively in recent study in the context of discovery of magneto-electric (ME)/multiferroic nature materials. In this paper a potential high temperature recovery of rare earth elements in the form of REFeO3 from waste permanent magnets using direct oxidation in air was investigated. It was found that REFeO3 (NdFeO3) phase can be separated from the other oxide phases by thermal treatment of NdFeB magnet waste at 1100 °C in air atmosphere. The REFeO3 also found to have different physical characteristic (density) from the other layers and can be separated physically. This paper will include a proposed flowsheet to recover Nd as NdFeO3 through powder separation. The technique can be beneficial and favourable for RE recycling and recovery from waste permanent magnets.

Stereolithography is a well known rapid prototyping technique in the manufacturing sector. Essentially it is a three dimensional printing process that produces plastic prototype parts from standard CAD files. At present, Canadian mining companies are not fully aware of the potential of Rapid Prototyping Techniques (RPTs) for their production and mine design systems. Mining engineers and geologists attempt to visualize and understand the characteristics and layouts of orebodies on computer models and in cases where it is decided to develop physical models, the process is time consuming based on simplified constructions. Rapid prototyping techniques (RPTs) such as stereolithography can facilitate engineers and geologists to quickly and with satisfactory accuracy to visualize sections of orebodies and evaluate alternative ore extraction techniques using 3D solid models. The research discussed in this paper is carried out by the Laurentian University Mining Automation Laboratory (LUMAL) in collaboration with the Department of Mines Research of Inco Limited and the Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Institute (IMTI) of the National Research Council of Canada. The main objective with this research is to evaluate the applicability of state-of-the-art RPTs (e.g. stereolithography) to underground hard rock mining systems. RPTs can play a significant role in accelerating the design and development process of mining systems.

Belt conveyors offer a reliable means and often do the most economical job for providing continuous bulk material transport, whenever the terrain permits their installation. The ore processing, construction and mining industries use belt conveyors to carry all types of material, from small to large tonnages. Most of the conveyors Fluor Mining & Metals, Inc. designs for metallurgical plants are in the in-plant category, of limited length and medium tonnages, and use fabric carcass conveyor belting. Belt widths can range from 24 to 60 inches Generally, the layout and design of these belt conveyors present no unusual problems. However, calculations for belt tension and horsepower, design of materials transfers, and the sizings and layouts of belt pulley stations and their drives are time consuming.

Bureau of Mines assumes no responsibility for accidents that may result from following the suggestions offered. Explosives to be destroyed may be fresh material from damaged packages, usable material for which there is no further need, or material that has deteriorated either from natural aging or from improper storage to the point where it is unfit for use.

Certain deposits of incoherent materials which are near the surface and exploitable by open-pit mining may be characterized in real time before they are mined through an analysis of ground-surface imagery. If the slice to be stripped is not overly thick, in fact, surface texture and color properties may be extrapolated to its entire thickness. Image analysis techniques to process ground surface images acquired in situ (or in the laboratory shortly after their acquisition) which yield pattern vectors representative of RGB color component distributions and HSB texture parameters have been developed. The techniques were applied to a mineral sandy ore deposit containing three different lithotypes. Geostatistical analyses showed that the data used to characterize the lithotypes were reliable. The correct recognition of the lithotypes was carried out using a multi-barycenter classification algorithm. Such in situ image-analysis procedures open the way to the proper selection of the ore to be mined, or the proper way for run of mine (r.o.m). processing, or the appropriate blend to be processed before or at the same time as the mining process itself is enacted.

Os aços inoxidáveis são materiais utilizados em ramos da indústria que demandam além de boa resistência à corrosão, elevada resistência mecânica. As ligas inoxidáveis austeníticas geralmente são submetidas ao trabalho a frio visando seu endurecimento, uma vez que não são endurecíveis via tratamento térmico. Devido à deformação plástica, pode ocorrer a transformação da austenita em martensita para algumas classes de aços. Esta transformação, dependendo da fração de fase transformada pode levar à redução da tenacidade. O foco deste trabalho está, portanto, na identificação e quantificação da martensita em amostras deformadas. Para isto, corpos de prova de aço austenítico AISI 321 foram deformados mediante laminação a frio e caracterizados pelo magnetômetro de amostra vibrante (VSM) e pela técnica Bitter modificada ao ferrofluido. Os resultados exibiram a fácil formação de martensita no aço e uma abordagem muito eficaz para revelar esta fase nas imagens de microscopia ótica. Com os valores de saturação magnética provenientes do VSM foi possível estimar a fração volumétrica da martensita para cada condição de deformação.

This paper is published as a progress report for the first half of 1929 on the study of wining methods and costs in the Eastern and Central States. Data obtained from 25 mines using open-stope methods are correlated and summarized. Some of these mines have been described in considerable detail in reports already published as Information Circulars. In addition to the published reports on individual mines, considerable data have been obtained from other mines which were visited and studied during the course of the investigation. Many of these mines will later be described in detail in separate papers, and when the field has been covered in this manner it is planned to issue a bulletin on open-stops methods of mining which will amplify the subject matter of the present paper. Definition of ?Open-Stops?. - The term "open-stopes" as employed by the Bureau of Mines is applied to all naturally supported stopes; that is, stopes in which the excavated ore is not replaced by support of an artificial nature other than preps or stulls and in which the ore or (and) capping are not caved during the active life of the stopes.

The United States is being invaded... by foreign capital: marks, francs, pounds, yen, lire, riyals, you name it: On almost any given day the Wall Street Journal will contain a new report on a department store, newspaper, bank, hotel, agricultural land, supermarket chain, et a1 being bought into by overseas investment. Xenophobic reaction to this revised national condition has begun to set in. Several farming states have and are introducing legislation to monitor foreign land buying. In Congress a mandatory reporting requirement for foreign purchasing is currently under study. In a relatively short period the country has reverted from world leader- ship in overseas acquisition and involvement to become itself one of the prime investment opportunities in existence. Interestingly enough, one of the industries where this changed status has become most apparent and pronounced is within that small/regional/segmented/low value-to-weight bulk commodity enterprise ranked as the backbone of the nation's construction activity. U.S. cement making is not only undergoing internationalization in its ownership, but also in its product, equipment, and engineering expertise.

Preheating Feature of Leyner Oil Furnace for Heating Drill Steel The No. 3 Leyner oil-burning furnace, used for heating drill steel, is now made with a preheating chamber. By this addition it is claimed that the heating capacity and, effeciency of the furnace are increased about 50 per cent. This preheater is a section which fits between the body and cover of the furnace of the old design. It may be attached to an old furnace by simply changing a few bolts. Referring to the illustration, it will be seen that the lower chamber is used for the final heating and the upper one for preheating. The type of burner now furnished with this furnace is suitable for either high- or low-pressure air. It hats merely to be throttled for high pressures and when this is done, it, is as efficient as burners designed especially for high pressures and eliminates the noise common to such burners. This furnace burns petroleum or any of its oils, such a, gasoline, kerosene, distillate, etc. Oil heating has many advantages. The steel cannot be injured by absorbing injurious elements such as sulphur, phosphorus or other impurities which :ire present in nearly all coals, nor from unequal heating since the flame imparts a uniform temperature; further, o lie steel is in full view of the operator at all times.
