In this paper we follow various technological discoveries and developments in the purification of minerals and metals in the mining industry by ion exchange. For approximately 100 years, ion exchange has been a known and variously applied purification and separation technology used by scientists and producers. It would seem obvious that the producer’s objectives have always been to achieve the highest quality products and the lowest operation costs, but also with the least amount of technological complexity. As a strategy to reach these goals, much effort has been expended in the quest to improve continuous ion exchange (CIX) systems by reducing utility needs and resin degradation or loss while at the same time improving productivity and reliability. Recent developments from a number of companies have pushed equipment boundaries, resulting in a variety of unique commercial equipment designs each with a varying degree of success. The challenge set forth for all new designs has been a truly continuous process with no sacrifice in the afore mentioned benefits. One very recent equipment design based on system symmetry appears to meet many of these objectives with greater flexibility and less complexity resulting in better economics for the producer.

Alluvial gold is abundant in the Quaternary deposits of the Kabul and Indus rivers in District Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Understanding the provenance of alluvial gold using morphology and elemental composition could be helpful in developing an exploration strategy of regional benefit. Detailed morphological studies of gold grains revealed high flatness index values which are indicative of a distal source. Compositional studies of 58 gold grains using SEM and EMPA showed broadly similar Ag ranges (1– 15 wt%) for each sample and occasional Cu values in individual gold particles to 0.4 wt%.Whilst the Ag profile is not diagnostic, the Cu values are compatible with derivation from either porphyry systems or ultrabasic rocks. The complex geology of the drainage catchments could host gold mineralization of other styles, but larger sample suites would be required to refine the current interpretation to establish whether particles which are simple Au-Ag alloys could be derived fromorogenic or epithermal sources. This scoping study has demonstrated that the compositional and morphological studies of gold grains are useful in providing information regarding the nature and location of the source of placer gold in areas where there is limited information on the nature and location of in situ mineralization.

Taboguilla is a small island located 10 miles outside the Panama Canal Pacific Entrance. In 2002 a fuel distribution facility was installed in order to supply fuel to vessels passing thru the canal. The current capacity of the tank farm is equivalent to 1,100,000 barrels. The demand for marine diesel at this location still exceeds the current capacity, thus an expansion project is currently underway to increase the available space for diesel tanks. There is a total of 800,000 cubic meters to be excavated in order to create the new space. 400,000 cubic meters of that total is basalt rock which will need to be blasted

Efficient blasting requires constant vigilance with respect to the actual layout being used in the field. Objective measurement techniques are required in laying out a pattern as the 'by eye' or 'thumb suck' methods cannot guarantee consistent results in layout. Erratic blast results are the consequence of such an approach. In a case study at Sons of Gwalia mine, it was demonstrated that incorrect front burdens had a snowballing effect on otherwise carefully laid out blasts, resulting in both excessive amounts of boulders caused by preconditioning of bench fronts and tops, and tight digging. Both problems caused lower excavator productivity and excessive excavator damage, as well as making it difficult to set out subsequent blasts correctly. Several field measurement methods are available to aid in determining correct blast layouts and one is described in this paper.

The chapter describes how several OR techniques assisted the planning of a major new UR project. A computer system was developed to analyze reserves distribution and potential of possible underground layouts, to assist in choosing the location and size of access points. Manpower requirements of each proposed working plan were assessed and matched with the potential recruitment of skilled and unskilled labor. Computer simulations were used to determine the optimum capacity for coal preparation plant and surface bunkerage. For the overall assessment of robustness, financial modelling and risk analysis techniques were adapted to the special requirements of new mines.

The principal official test performed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the permissibility of coal-mine explosives, commonly referred to as the gallery test, has been in use at the Bruceton station for many years (2, 16).4/ In this test the explosive under study is loaded into the borehole of a steel cannon and fired into a flammable mixture of natural gas and air or natural gas, air, and coal dust. To meet the requirements for permissibility, the explosive must not ignite the gas mixture under the conditions of the test. There is little doubt that these tests have succeeded in the main objective, namely, to screen the relatively safe from the relatively hazardous explosives. It has been generally conceded that adoption of permissible explosives by the coal-mining industry in the United States has substantially reduced the frequency of disastrous underground explosions caused by blasting. In recent years, however, research workers planning programs for improving the safety of coal-mine explosives have felt the growing need of a more quantitative method for measuring the incendivity of explosives based on a better understanding of the role of the important variables in the gallery tests, Accordingly, it was decided to apply certain statistical methods and techniques to the gallery test to develop it into a more precise tool for evaluating permissible explosives. One of the first and more important methods applied for this purpose was the up-and-down technique (6,7,17), It was demonstrated (14,15) that the weight of the explosive charge directly affects the ignition probability of the natural gas-air atmosphere and that the curve of ignition probability versus charge weight is a cumulative normal curve. Following these experiments, a program, still in progress, was set up to study how the addition of sodium chloride to various permissible-type ex-plosives affects their incendivity. This program resulted in 3,294 shots,

"This report describes a research project for evaluating the applicability of the widely accepted 80 percent criterion for elongation of ground anchors to anchors with unbonded lengths exceeding 100 feet. This issue is driven by several recent projects involving ground anchors for landslide stabilization in which a significant percentage of the anchors did not meet the criterion that requires measured elongation during proof load testing of at least 80 percent of the theoretical elastic elongation. The projects involved anchor unbonded lengths in the range of 85 to 220 feet, which is outside the range traditionally used in practice, although anchors of this length are being used more frequently for landslide stabilization. The principal objective of this research is to address whether the widely accepted criterion of 80 percent elongation is applicable for such applications, and whether other factors affect the ability of anchors to meet the criterion.Analytical methods for predicting transfer of load along the length of steel strand due to friction loss are used routinely in the prestressed concrete industry. These analytical expressions provide a rational framework for quantifying changes in load due to friction along the length of a ground anchor in terms of a ‘wobble coefficient’ (K) as defined in Aalami (2004). Values of the wobble coefficient for ground anchors can only be determined by back-calculating from load tests, i.e., fit the value of K to the appropriate analytical expression based on the known test load and measured percent elongation. The analytical basis is first developed and shown to provide a tool for evaluating results of anchor load tests to determine the magnitude of expected elongation as a function of unbonded length. Next, a database of anchor load tests is used to back-calculate values of K for anchors with unbonded lengths in the range typically used in geotechnical applications (< 100 feet). These values of K are then used to calculate expected friction loss for anchors with high unbonded lengths (100 to 250 feet) to evaluate whether the 80 percent criterion is reasonable."

"THERE HAS BEEN a marked growth in the petroleum industry in Canada since the end of the war. The rate of growth in the demand for oil products has exceeded that in United States, although the per capita consumption is still less. Estimates of the consumption of petroleum and petroleum products in Canada in 1951 are approximately 154,000,000 barrels, which is slightly more than 11 •barrels per capita, whereas the estimated consumption in United States for the same period, according to World Petroleum, is placed at 2,619,- 970,000 barrels. This, on the basis of a population of 154,000,000, would be equivalent to 17 barrels per capita. The increase in consumption of the petroleum and products is world wide. World production in 1951 has been estimated (Oil and Gas Journal) at 11,700,000 barrels a day or more than 41;4, billion barrels for the year. United States production increased 13.7 per cent to 6,143,000 •barrels a day and Canada'.s ,, total production increased about 65 per cent from a total of 29,091,235 •barrels in 1950 to an estimated (Dominion Bureau of Statistics) 48,096,800 barrels in 1951.The trend to use increased amounts of petroleum and petroleum products, particularly in the United States and Canada, has also been supplemented by increased use of natural gas. The rate of expansion of the consumption of natural gas in United States in the past few years has been very rapid, increasing from 2,600 billion cubic feet in 1940 to 5,975 billion in 1950, with the proven reserves in the same period increasing from 85,000 billion to 186,000 billion cubic feet."

Homestake Mining Co. set out to complete final reclamation at a former open-pit gold mine in west central Nevada. The goal was to exceed regulatory standards by satisfying the company&apos;s own high corporate standards for successful reclamation. Homestake&apos;s completion requirements challenged available technology due to the unsuitability of heap material as a growth medium, the harsh environmental conditions of the site and the region&apos;s lack of native growth medium. Accomplishing these goals required enlisting a multidisciplinary project team to develop, test and implement appropriate and cost-effective revegetation alternatives.

Until quite recently, the coal in the Cape Breton field was won from comparatively thick seams with light cover, and from submarine areas, and the system of mining naturally followed was pillar-and-stall. This sytem permitted of cheap extraction, and enabled production from localities where other methods could not be employed to good advantage. Thus the pillar-and-stall system, applied to conditions as stated, justified its adoption. Our working seams today, however, are practically all under heavy cover, or are moving in that direction, and with this gradual increase in cover came the increased cost of roadway maintenance. At Princess colliery, the system of pillar-and-stall was followed until roof and bottom conditions became such that further operations were unprofitable, and the longwall method was then adopted as an economic necessity. This fact should be borne in mind when operating costs of both systems are being compared. The longwall method is not held as a cure for all difficulties of heavy cover, but through it these difficulties can be overcome with less expense than by pillar-and-stall. The longwall system of mining, strictly speaking, is one by which a seam of coal is totally extracted in one operation. There are, however, many modifications of longwall, and in some cases it is difficult to determine whether certain practices should be classed as longwall or pillar-and-stall, or a combination of both.

In the transpassive region, about 0.4 to 0.8 V (SCE), aggressive oxidation of pyrite occurred. The reaction products in this region were Fe(III) oxide, sulfate ion and partially oxidized sulfur intermediates. The growth kinetics of the reaction product film, resulting from transpassive oxidation of pyrite were studied using chronoamperometry measurement with both stationary and rotating disk electrodes. The effect of electrode rotation speed, solution pH and temperature were examined. Potentiostatic measurements were well correlated by a paralinear rate equation, suggesting the formation of an intermediate passive film, associated with the simultaneous dissolution of the outer layer of the film. Activation energies of 66.17 kJ/mole (15.83 kcal/mole) and 38.67 kJ/mole (9.25 kcal/mole) were obtained for associated parabolic and linear rate constants respectively, at an applied potential of 0.6 V.

In this work, the selective reduction of lateritic nickel ore was carried out using sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, and sodium chloride as additives. The 5 wt% of anthracite coal, which contains 60.35% of fixed carbon and 1.9% of sulfur, was used as a reductant. All raw materials were mixed homogenously prior to the pelletization process into 10–15 mm of diameter. The reduction process was carried out to 50 g of pellets at 950 °C, 1050 °C, and 1150 °C for 60 min in a muffle furnace at atmospheric pressure. It continued with a wet magnetic separation process to separate ferronickel (concentrates) and impurities (tailings). Iron and nickel grade analysis was performed using XRF, while phase transformation and microstructure were analyzed with XRD and SEM–EDS. The results showed that the sodium sulfate was superior, resulting in the highest nickel grade in concentrate, i.e., 15.06%. The sulfidation mechanism, which could inhibit the metallization of iron, effectively increased the nickel grade in concentrate than decomposition of carbonate and chloridization process. The sulfur content in the reductant also influenced the selective reduction process. It promotes more sulfidation of iron, thus increasing the nickel grade in concentrate.

Sophisticated models have progressively been developed to address the challenges related to long-term, openpit mine planning under conditions of geological uncertainty. Prior research has acknowledged that strategies for mine planning and the design of mineral concentrators are interdependent; thus, it is highly desirable to optimize them together. However, achieving detailed holistic optimization of the mineral value chain remains unresolved because of the inherent limitations associated with mathematical formulations and computational processing capacity. This paper details a method that contributes to bridging these limitations by employing a novel parallelized variable neighborhood descent approach combined with an embedded mass–balance component using linear programming techniques refined through Dantzig– Wolfe decomposition. This approach is exemplified through a case study of a gold deposit, which illustrates the enhanced performance capabilities of the new algorithm. The findings demonstrate significant improvements in the optimization process for mine planning, providing a stronger link between the mine’s output and processing plant’s capabilities.

At Buffington Station, Gary, Ind., Universal Atlas Cement operates fourteen 8 x 101/2 x 155-ft cement kilns in mill 6 and two 11 x 360-ft kilns in the Harbor plant. The No. 11 and 12 kilns in mill 6 are equipped with Manitowac recuperator sections. This report describes studies in measuring exterior shell temperatures on several of these kilns and the development of a traveling radiation pyrometer with certain novel features. Preliminary Work: At first various temperature-sensing devices were placed on the steel shell: 1) crayons with calibrated melting points, 2) colored paints with temperature-calibrated pigments, 3) aluminum paints with temperature-calibrated binders, and 4) metal-stem dial thermometers. The colored paints and aluminum paints failed to indicate the temperatures correctly. The crayons and thermometers did indicate fairly correct temperatures, but it proved impossible to apply enough of these on the shell to detect all the potential areas where hot spots might develop. Furthermore, considerable labor was required to apply these sensors and read the temperatures. Consequently no further work was done with these devices. Formation of Hot Spots: In the burning or clinker-ing zone of a cement kiln, the thickness of the protective coating and thickness of the brick govern the amount of heat transmitted to the steel kiln shell. Usually the protective coating consists of 4 to 8 in. of fused cement clinker. The formation of a hot spot is usually caused by loss of coating? that is, localized areas of the coating become thin or fall away from the refractory. This is generally caused by excessive temperature in the burning zone over a fairly long period of time. It may also be caused by a sudden thermal change in the burning zone. Variations in raw feed composition and in feed rate require changes in the fuel and air rates, and when these are not appropriately altered, conditions may develop in the kiln that will result in loss of coating. Luminescence on the kiln shell indicates that a hot spot has developed to a point that usually alters the refractory&apos;s thermal conductivity properties. When this thermal weakness zone occurs in the burning zone of the kiln, constant vigilance is required to protect it by maintaining proper coating. Even so, it has been the writers&apos; experience that within a period of several days to about four weeks the hot spot usually recurs with greater severity. This necessitates shutting down the kiln and re-bricking the affected area. One of the prerequisites of a good burnerman is the ability to maintain a protective coating despite the many variables in operation. When he knows that it is getting thin or that an area has dropped off, he reduces the firing rate and kiln speed and brings feed into the affected area in an effort to rebuild the coating. But when powdered fuel is burned, the atmosphere of the kiln may prevent the burnerman&apos;s observing the condition of the coating closely at all times without taking off the fire. It is not considered good practice to do this frequently, as it imposes a thermal shock on the coating and upsets operation of the kiln. To help the burnerman scan the shell of the kiln along the burning zone, therefore, a radiation pyrometer, connected to a potentiometric recorder, was mounted on a slowly moving steel cable. The theory of operation, construction details, and adaptability of the radiation pyrometer are included in an excellent monograph&apos; and also in a textbook.&apos; Shell temperatures of the Atlas Cement kilns were measured with a Brown Instruments Div. low intermediate range Radiamatic unit, of range 200" to 1200°F, and a circular chart Electronik potentio-metric recorder, of range 500" to 1000°F. In Bulletin 59095M the supplier publishes standard calibration data (millivolts vs degrees Fahrenheit) for this radiation pyrometer, These data, however, apply only to flat surfaces having emissivities of unity. Calibration of Radiation Pyrometer for Use on Curved Surfaces: When applied to surface temperature measurements, the radiation pyrometer reading depends on the nature of the surface, the material of which it is composed, and also to some extent on the temperature of the surroundings. Although the present radiation pyrometer is designed to give a calibrated response under ideal (black body) conditions when used commercially, it must be calibrated empirically. The demand for mineral raw materials, especially in the major industrialized nations, has grown rapidly during the past three decades. One consequence of this growth has been an increasing reliance by the large industrialized countries upon nondomestic mineral supplies. These mineral supplies, to a large extent, have been developed by capital from the major industrialized countries. Until recently, most foreign mining ventures were either wholly-owned subsidiaries or joint ventures between two or more mining companies. The recent rise of economic nationalism has substantially changed the business climate and parameters under which foreign investors operate. This paper describes some of the underlying reasons for this change and notes how investors have adapted to the new business conditions.

It reviews key performance parameters such as energy size relationships for crushing processes and how automation devices can optimize machine productivity. Weaknesses of existing application engineering methods are discussed. The use of pilot plant information and appropriate laboratory testing procedures are reviewed from the point of view of the application design engineer so that the best type of machine can be selected for a proposed installation.

With the ongoing pressure on the secondary aluminum business to limit the amount of waste generated from processing aluminum dross, it becomes very advantageous to preprocess the dross to reduce waste. The advantage of preprocessing is that it significantly reduces the oxides and salt cake generated when melted. Various products can be produced from the oxides for the steel industry. The following paper will demonstrate that removal of oxide fines before melting will result in large volumes of material not being landfilled. We will show that the end result of this technology is to significantly reduce the amount of salt cake sent to a landfill while maximizing the recyclability of the aluminum dross.

"The large Yandi channel iron deposit (CID) is located in the north-west of Western Australia and is currently mined via open pit methods. Drilling at Yandi is widely spaced and current estimates are mostly linear averages of the surrounding local samples. Linear estimates such as ordinary kriging (OK) based on block sizes that are significantly smaller than the dimensions of the drilling grid are less variable than the unknown reality (Armstrong and Champigny, 1989).Conditional simulation (CS) provides a series of plausible realisations that represent the actual grade variability at a small scale (eg 1 m + 1 m + 1 m). These simulations are very useful for a number of purposes, eg: optimising grade control, stockpiling and blending selection of optimal drill hole spacing assessing resource risk on contained tonnage and metal.At Yandi the major constituents of the ore (Fe, P2O5, SiO2, Al2O3 and LOI) are correlated to varying degrees. Independent CS of each assay variable will not reproduce these correlations. Reproducing the correlations (and the shape of scatterplots) is important if the simulations are used for the abovementioned purposes. This paper examines and compares various methods of CS that aim to reproduce the correlations between the assay variables.The CS methods evaluated in this paper are conditional co-simulation (CCS) using the linear model of co-regionalisation and two other, alternative multivariate simulation methods, which use min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) or the stepwise conditional transform (SCT) to de-correlate assay variables before performing independent CS. It was found that CCS best reproduced the characteristics (histograms, variogram, scatterplots, etc) of the declustered drill hole data (Figure 1). Whilst simulation using MAF generally produced acceptable results, the method did not adequately reproduce the variance of the assay variables. The univariate statistics, histograms and experimental variograms were acceptable for simulations generated from the SCT. Bivariate statistics, cross-variograms and scatterplot reproduction for the SCT were unacceptable. The latter method produced inferior results because there were insufficient samples to obtain a reliable transform of the third assay variable in the transformation sequence.None of the abovementioned simulation methods provides good reproduction of all the scatterplots. This is due to the presence of clay pods, which cause some scatterplots to display two trends. These clay pods contain higher percentages of SiO2 and Al2O3 than the surrounding CID. The clay pods are generally smaller than the drill-grid dimensions. Thus their locations are typically unknown and they cannot be defined by manual interpretation, eg via wireframes. The locations of the clay pods were simulated via indicator CS. CCS was then performed separately for the clay pods and the CID. This significantly improved the reproduction of the correlation coefficients, the scatterplots and visually the simulation was more geologically realistic. Simulating the location of clay pods followed by CCS of assay variables is the recommended approach for simulation at the Yandi CID.CITATION:De-Vitry, C, 2013. This paper presents some of the results of a rock mechanics in¬strumentation program designed for, and implemented at, longwall panel 4N at the York Canyon Mine near Raton, New Mexico. The objective of this particular instrumentation program was to determine the response of the rock mass to longwall mining of a thick coal seam utilizing shield-type supports. Measurements were made in the rock along the ground surface, above the coal seam, in the coal seam and immediately below the coal seam. Longwall test panel 411 had a total developed length of 762 m (2500 ft) and a face width of 168 m (550 ft). The seam mining height in the panel area was approximately 3 m (10 ft). The average depth of overburden above the panel is 107 m (350 ft) al¬though it ranges from 73-134 m (240 - 440 ft). Roof support at the face was provided by Hemscheidt shields. These shield-type supports weigh 11.4 metric tons each.
