Pressure-temperature-composition data were obtainedfor the Er-H system. Measurements werecar-ried out in the temperature range of 473° to 1223°K, the composition range of erbium to ErH,, and the pressure range of 10-5 to 760 Torr. Solubility relationships were established from these data throughout the system. Three solid-solution phases were delineated: metal solid solution, dihydride phase, and trihydride phase. The trihydride Phase decomposes at about 656°K and 1 atm pressure. The dihydride phase is stable to about 1023°K, but becomes more deficient in hydrogen above this temperature. The equilibrium decomposition pressure-temperature relationships in the two-phase regions, erbium solid solution plus dihydride and dihydride plus trihydride, were deter- The differential heats of reaction in these two regions are AH = - 52.6 * 0.3 and - 19.8 i 0.2 kcal per mole of Hz, respectively. The differential entropies of reaction are AS = - 35.2 * 0.3 and - 30.1 * 0.4 cal per mole HZ.deg, respectively. Relative partial molal and integral thermodynamic quuntities were calculated in the system to the dihydride phase. RARE earth metal-hydrogen systems have been the subject of general survey,1"4 and all have been found to form hydride phases. The heavy rare earths, of which erbium is a member, form dihydride and trihydride phases with different crystal structures, whereas the light rare earths form only a single-phase dihydride which expands without structure change, as hydrogen is added, to the trihydride composition. These materials are of interest primarily because of their theoretical properties, such as bonding, defect structure, and thermodynamic and electronic characteristics. Erbium has been studied in several previous investigations.5, 6 It was deemed desirable to more thoroughly and accurately define the system, both for the phase equilibria and the thermodynamic properties. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Sieverts&apos; apparatus was employed to conduct the experimental measurements. Briefly, it consisted of a source of pure hydrogen, a precision gas-measuring buret, a heated reaction chamber, a mercury manometer, and two McLeod gages (a CVC, GM 100A and CVC, GM 110). Pure hydrogen was obtained by passing hydrogen through a heated Pd-Ag thimble. The hydrogen was analyzed and found to have only a trace of oxygen and nitrogen. A 100-ml precision gas buret graduated to 0.1-ml divisions was used to measure and admit hydrogen to the reaction chamber. The reaction unit consisted of a quartz tube surrounded by a nichrome-wound furnace. The furnace temperature was controlled by a recorder-controller to ±1°K. An independent measurement of the sample temperature in the quartz tube was made by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple situated outside, but adjacent to, the quartz tube near the specimen. Pressure in the manometer range was measured to ±0.5 Torr and in the McLeod range (10-4 to 10 Torr) to ±3 pct. The hydrogen compositions in erbium were calculated in terms of hydrogen-to-erbium atomic ratio. These compositions were estimated to be ±0.01 H/Er. The erbium metal was obtained from the Lunex Co. in the form of sponge. The metal was nuclear grade with a purity of 99.9 pct +. The oxygen content was reported to be 340 ppm and the nitrogen not detectable. Metallographically the structure was almost free of second phase (<1 vol pct). A quantity of sponge was arc-melted for use as charge material. The solid material was compared with the sponge in the pressure-temperature-composition relationships. They were found to be identical. Therefore, sponge material was used henceforth, so that equilibrium could be attained more rapidly. The specimen size was about 0.2 grain for each loading of the reaction chamber. The procedure employed to obtain the pressure-temperature-composition data was to develop experimentally a family of isothermal curves of composition vs pressure. First, a specimen of erbium was wrapped in a tungsten foil capsule to prevent contact with the quartz tube. After loading the specimen, the system was evacuated to less than l0-6 Torr, flushed several times with high-purity hydrogen, and evacuated again ready for the start of the experiment. The furnace was then brought to the desired temperature. A measured amount of hydrogen was admitted into the chamber. Equilibrium was allowed to be attained, the pressure read, and the process then repeated many times until 1 atm of gas pressure was finally reached. Other isotherms were then developed in the same manner. The partial pressure plateaus were determined by another manner. In the solid solution-dihydride region a composition of approximately 1.0 H/Er was selected on the plateau. The temperature was varied throughout the range of interest. At each temperature level, equilibrium was achieved, the pressure read, and the next temperature attained. The temperature was cycled both up and down. In the dihydride-trihy-dride region, the plateaus were determined in the 473" to 651°K range only by heating to the desired temperature and not by both heating and cooling. Magnesium International Limited (MIL) has broken new ground in their desire to integrate their mineral development activities in the Southern Flinders Ranges of South Australia in to the communities of the region, despite there being no statutory requirement to do so. In their efforts to define a magnesite resource adjacent to the proposed site for a magnesium metal processing facility, MIL opened their exploration program up for public consultation. In conjunction with the Port Pirie Regional Development Board (PPRDB), a community group was formed to review the impact of exploration and mining on the ecologically sensitive Southern Flinders region. This voluntary move towards full community consultation for mineral exploration was a first in South Australia and probably in Australia. The Community Focus Group (CFG) worked closely with MIL, Primary Industries and Resources of South Australia (PIRSA) and the Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH) in the development of an exploration program and Declaration of Environmental Factors (DEF) acceptable to all stakeholders. Collaboratively, the community concerns were discussed and addressed, with the community gaining a very comprehensive understanding of the exploration process and possible future mine development. A balance of social, environmental and economic factors was developed that was accepted by all parties and encapsulated in the final DEF for approval by the regulatory authority. The consultation process was a new experience for all of the stakeholders, each of them effectively exploring new ground in addressing information dissemination, risk management and the social versus economic equation. MIL developed not only a viable and acceptable exploration program but also substantially reinforced its position as a responsible corporate citizen with the Southern Flinders communities.

INVESTIGATION by German chemists during the World War showed that particles of iron oxide form rapidly in iron pipes carrying hydrogen gas under pressure when the gas contains small amounts of water. Under these conditions, the gas frequently exploded when expanding into a dirigible. The explanation of the explosions lies in the building up of a charge of static electricity in the flow just beyond the orifice and the ignition of the gas by a spark accompanying discharge of the electricity. Friction between the moving particles and the pipe generated the electric charge, which was manifested by a pale blue glow formed in the flow at pressures above two atmospheres. In one experiment, this glow, at eighty atmospheres, extended for a distance of forty to fifty centimetres, but did not ignite hydrogen and air mixtures until the charge was col-lected by a conductor and discharged across a gap between electrodes placed at the side of the column of gas. Autoignition did not occur when this discharge was effected at a distance from the gas column, nor if the gas used was thoroughly dried and free from impurities. The electric charge has been studied by placing various wire and screen conductors in the outcoming stream of gas, Guest having summarized these experiments. The application of these conclusions to fires in petroleum and natural gas issuing uncontrolled from wells is made in the following paper, citing the ignition of a wild gas well in Texas.

The Bureau of Mines has developed prototype instruments promising to improve the ability to warn of imminent roof falls. An unusually good opportunity to test these comparatively under natural caving conditions was afforded by the forecasted caving in August 1977 of a mined-out region of the White Pine Mine. The latter&apos;s rock strata closely resemble those in many coal mines. The anticipated cave was of the competent-roof/weak-pillar type. It occurred as, and when, predicted. Automated convergence and bed separation gages agreed well with the standard manual convergence gage measurements. A micro seismic gage was found to be insensitive to the fall and may require different test conditions for effectiveness. A roof resistivity unit was tested under a separate Bureau of Mines contract. (No. H02720J7). An unplanned addition showed interesting potential.

High-chromium vanadium-titanium magnetite has not been exploited and made full use of on a large scale so far due to the immature utilisation technology and the reality that the utilisation efficiency of valuable metals still urgently needs to be improved. In the present paper, the isothermal reduction kinetics and mechanism of high-chromium vanadium-titanium pellets were studied at 800–1100&#176;C. The mineral composition transformation of pellets before and after reduction was analysed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) to reveal the elemental distributions. The effect of reduction temperature on the volumetric swelling degree and cold crushing strength was also studied. It was found that reduction temperature has a large effect on the reduction rate of pellets, and the increase in reduction rate is more obvious in the range 1000–1100&#176;C than 800–1000&#176;C. The volumetric swelling degree of pellets increased with increasing reduction temperature, while the cold crushing strength decreased. The transformation of mineral species can be expressed as Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe, Fe2O3&#183;3TiO2 ? Fe3O4&#183; (2FeO&#183;TiO2 ) ? 2FeO&#183; TiO2 ? FeO&#183;TiO2, (Fe0.6Cr0.4)2O3 ? FeO&#183; Cr2O3 ? Cr2O3 , and Fe2O3&#183; VO/V2O3 ? VO. The apparent activation energy of the reduction reaction was calculated to be 44.3 kJ/mol, and the reduction rate is controlled by the combined effect of interfacial chemical reaction and gas diffusion through the porous product layer. The rate controlling steps were further studied by calculating the resistance percentages. INTRODUCTION Radioactive deposits were observed in 1972 in some of the Upper Silesian coal mines. They were located mainly in the drains in galeries and on the inside surfaces of water pipes. They also caused some problems by accumulating in water pumps. It has been postulated that the deposits are produced by natural radioactive waters seeping from the rocks. Investigations were initiated to answer the following questions: - What is the composition and the amount of radioactivity in the deposits? - What radioisotopes are present in the water? - How are the radioactive deposits formed? - Do the radioactive waters also occur in other mines? - How does the radioactivity of the water depend on chemical composition? - What is the origin of the radioactive water? - Does the water and the deposits cause radiation hazards for miners? -How can the radiation hazard be reduced? METHODS OF MEASUREMENT Determination of Radium Isotopes in Water The commonly used methods of radium determination in water are either based on measurements of the radioactivity of 222Rn which is in equilibrium with 226Ra, or on the detection of alpha particles of the radium radioisotopes after chemical separation of radium from the water sample. The method based on radon activity measurements is very sensitive and does not require any chemical Separation, but it can be used for determination of 226Ra from the uranium series only, because the thorium daughter 220Rn has too short a half-life (55s to yield the required accuracy. The method developed by Goldin, 1961 [2] involved alpha-particle measurements in thin layers of RaS04 and BaS04 separated from the water. This method is not convenient for saline water and water with high barium concentration because the amount of barium carrier in this case is too large to obtain a thin layer of precipitate with sufficient activity. The Upper Silesian carboniferous waters are often saline with high barium content, so the method described by Goldin was not convenient for this case and it was necessary to change the detection system and modify the chemical preparation. The procedure developed by the authors for the determination of radium isotopes in water was as follows: - Depending on the Ba2+ content and the required sensitivity of measurement, a water sample of 200 cm3 to 3 dm3 was taken. - 10 cm3 of 0.25 M citric acid and 5 cm3 15M ammonia was added to form complex Ba2+ ions and avoid the immediate precipitation of BaSO4. (This was repeated as long as the addition of BaC12 did not form a precipitate.) - 1 cm3 of 1N solution of Pb(N03)2 as a carrier for radioactive isotopes of lead and 10 cm3 of 0.1 N BaC12 as a carrier for radium were added. - The sample was heated to the boiling point and the precipitation of RaS04, BaSO4 and PbS04 with 50% H2SO4 was carried out. - After several hours the sample was centrifuged and the precipitate was purified by washing with nitric acid and distilled water. - The precipitate was then redisolved in 20 cm3 0.125 M Na2EDTA and 3 cm3 6M ammonia and reprecipitated from the solution by dropwise addition of acetic acid to d pH of 4.5. At this value of pH, precipitation occurs only for the barium and radium sulfates, while lead and all other radioactive elements remain in the solution. The date and time of deposit precipitation was recorded. - The final barium-radium sulfate mixture was washed with distilled water and transferred to standard measurement vials. - Each vial containing a deposit had 6 cm3 of distilled water added and was then shaken vigorously. 12 cm3 of liquid gelling scintillator (INSTA-GEL UNISOLV-1 type) was then added and the vi 1 was shaken again. After a while the scintillator turns into a milky gel in which the deposit is uniformly distributed. - The standard sample of 226Ra was prepared in the same way. - The activity of the samples was measured using a liquid scintillation spectrometer. (In this case the TRICARB 3320 produced by Packard Instruments, was used). Tests run on standard radium solutions provided by Amersham Radiochemical Centre indicated that this method of measurement enables one to achieve an efficiency of almost 100% (within measurement error). For alpha particles no quenching effect was observed for the BaS04 concentration in the range up to 80 mg of BaS04 per 1 cm3 of liquid scintillator coctail (Fig. 1). The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of existing forms of subcontracting in the South African mining industry. A descriptive framework is developed to understand different subcontracting arrangements. We argue that, in order to do so, it is important to distinguish between labour broking and gang subcontracting. Data resulting from a research project (including an analysis of historical sources, interviews with contractors and focus group interviews with mineworkers) is presented to highlight the implications of changing formations of subcontracting for the South African mining industry in the late 1990s. Apart from the subcontracting of ?traditional? functions, such as shaft sinking, access development, catering and hostel maintenance, contractors are now used in ?core? mining activities. In some instances, whole shafts are ?outsourced? to outside agencies. It is argued that certain of the subcontracting arrangements have serious implications for the ability of the mining industry to improve health and safety standards. Some of the practices can potentially result in conflict between different categories of workers, and, as a result, instability in the industry.

Over the past 20 to 30 years statistics as a science has grown in significance. Not a day passes without reference to the latest statistics by the print, audio and audio-visual media. The Northern Territory Government has been part of this growth and like other public and private sector organisations collects a broad range of statistics. The Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy participates in the government&apos;s statistics collection process. Statistics collected and published by the Department of Mines and Energy include geoscientific; mining and exploration tenure; environmental (e.g. mine site waste water management); production of minerals, oil and gas; mining sector employment; and occupational health and safety. The importance of statistics collection to the Northern Territory Government is discussed in the paper.

The present work is based on the characterization of nonmetallic inclusions in Ti stabilized ultra-low carbon steel, produced in a large steel mill. Due to a large incidence of submersed valve clogging in a continuous casting, the study is important in order to know the characteristics of the inclusions which are causing the problem. Total of 24 heats were sampled in the tundish and manually analyzed with a scanning electron microscope. The results revealed that 98.65% of the 3183 inclusions analyzed were solid in steelmaking temperature and 66.54% were alumina. The solid inclusions of alumina have low wettability for the iron bath, showing a high tendency of agglomeration in the submersed valves, affecting the castability. It has been concluded from the results and literature that some alternative measures such as the application of the treatment with calcium, precautions to avoid steel re-oxidation and the total or partial replacement of the pre-deoxidized element; would reduce the obstruction problem.

Many technical processes also yield dusty residues which usually contain appreciable amounts of valuable matter. Often they also accumulate substances detrimental to the process. Dumping them entirely in landfills wastes raw material and causes high disposal costs, but recycling them without prior treatment is often not feasible. Physical separation processes are preferable because of their rather low energy demand. In order to develop such treatment systematically, the residues must be characterized properly. The technique for such a characterization is taken from mineral processing: perfect fractionation according to continuous properties of the particles supplemented with chemical analysis are used for plotting the Henry-Reinhardt chart. This represents the benchmark for assessing actual separation processes and tests. Their results are compared in terms of ?selectivity? and plotted in the kappa chart. In this paper, Henry-Reinhardt chart and kappa chart are applied to several different types of residues from iron and steel production and show their potential for being upgraded before reutilization in the production process. THE years 1914-15-16 were a pioneering period in mining, milling, and copper metallurgy generally. It was uncertain just what path the crushing, grinding, and concentrating processes would take. This situation was quite embarrassing to the directors of some of our large porphyry properties, then being equipped for production. Inspiration had already made several designs for its proposed 15,000-ton concentrator, incorporating in them the latest devices developed in the art of gravity concentration, only to have the work vitiated by the rapid march of events. In a little improvised plant, built on ground that is now in the crater of subsidence over the Inspiration- Miami orebodies, flotation was being experimentally &apos; applied to Inspiration ore by Minerals Separation engineers in 1914, with results indicating that this process would be of major importance in the concentration of the sulfides. How best to apply it, and especially how to crush and grind the ore to the very much finer sizes required for the new process, was a serious question, properly to be answered only by doing it, in full- sized machines, under regular &apos;operating conditions.

Improperly designed support systems have led to unplanned roof falls in longwall tailgates. To prevent such falls requires appropriate support and adequately designed support systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. To design the support system with this methodology requires a quantitative assessment of the ground and support interaction, which is developed from instrumented test sites installed in longwall tailgates. To compliment and expand the field data results and to optimize the support design, numerical modeling is also conducted. The models are calibrated from the test site data. In the present study, data was obtained from a longwall tailgate in the Illinois basin. The test site was located in the Herrin No. 6 coal seam at a depth of 500 ft. At the site, the immediate roof was a weak shale overlain by a competent limestone. Above the limestone, sandstone formed the intermediate roof. The floor consisted of a weak underclay. In the study, the performance and interaction with the surrounding rock mass of two different standing supports, an engineered crib and a conventional 4-point wood crib were monitored. The two cribs have similar load-displacement characteristics at least through 6 in of displacement. Beyond 6 in, the engineered crib becomes unstable and begins to strain soften and shed load. The measurements and developed ground reaction curves indicated that the tailgate at the mine was a low convergence environment until well inby the face. Because the convergence was well below their capacity, both supports provide more than adequate levels of support to the tailgate. Significant convergence and support loading did not occur until 90 to 100 ft inby the face. The results of this study were also compared with results from similar studies conducted in the Pittsburgh seam to further advance the development of the ?ground reaction curve? based support system design.

In the mining industry blasts are usually designed to fracture the in situ rock mass and prepare it for excavation and subsequent transport. The run of mine (ROM) fragmentation is considered good when it is fine enough and loose enough to ensure efficient digging and loading operations. Mining optimisation strategy is hence usually focussed on minimising total mining costs and maintaining these ROM fragmentation characteristics. Although this approach ensures an efficient mining operation it ignores the potential impact on crushing and grinding. Investigations by several researchers have shown that designing blasts to produce ROM fragmentation to optimise crushing and grinding performance enhances the overall efficiency and profitability (Eloranta, 1995; Kojovic et al, 1995; Bulow et al, 1998; Kanchibotla et al, 1998; Scott et al, 1998; Simkus and Dance, 1998). Field experimentation in this area is often found to be difficult because of high implementation costs and insufficient understanding about the effect of fragmentation at different stages in a comminution circuit. Modelling and simulation of blasting and comminution processes provide a more economic alternative to explore the impact of blast design changes on the down stream operations (Kanchibotla et al, 1998; Kojovic et al, 1998; Adam and Siddall, 1998; Bulow et al, 1998). However, the reliability of such simulations depends on:the ability of the models to reproduce the physical processes that take place; characterisation of rock mass in terms of its blastability and comminution characteristics; and in the case of blast modelling the ability to predict fines (-10 mm) has been found to be particularly important as this fraction has a significant effect on mill throughput.

Some Western Australian underground mines are challenged by very high stress gradients. This environment frequently results in poor induced ground conditions and damaging seismic activity. In some cases, rockbursting or squeezing ground has been observed as shallow as 250 m below surface. Very few mines operating at depths greater than 500 m experience no stress-related issues. As a general result of this difficult environment, there are a growing number of mines that are now challenged or have been closed by induced geotechnical problems. Often, the up-front savings or perceived advantage of an inappropriate mine plan may be entirely lost to the real cost of managing the hazards, or a write-down of reserves resulting from access difficulties will diminish the economic position of the mine. From an engineering perspective, it is best if stress-related hazards can be proactively minimised, because reactive measures offer less improvement in risk exposure. In this paper, some examples of sequencing techniques for managing difficult environments are contrasted with examples from mines where developing hazards have adversely affected production or the economic viability of the project.

ALTHOUGH the mechanical cleaning of coal is carried out at plants on the surface, preparation is actually begun at the face in the mine. Here the character of the coal and the amount, character, and distribution of the impurities within the bed may be seen. Blasting methods, dust-allaying procedures, location of mining cut with respect to bands of impurity, and the practice of discarding segregated impurities underground, all have an important bearing on the successful operation of surface cleaning units. The most important single characteristic of both coal and its asso¬ciated impurities from the standpoint of cleaning is specific gravity. Other characteristics related in one way or another to the preparation of coal are rank, petrographic composition, structure and hardness, and friability. These and still other coal properties are discussed in the first section of this chapter and impurity characteristics in the second. COAL CHARACTERISTICS RELATED TO PREPARATION Rank As a result of work done over a period of several years by committees of the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association, standard specifications are now available showing the classification of coals according to rank and quality of grade.&apos; The term "rank" expresses the degree to which the original coal-forming material has been changed by metamorphism through successive stages from peat to anthracite. To provide insights and assistances for the optimization of ventilation systems for U. S. under-ground coal mines facing both methane control and spontaneous combustion issues, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study is being conducted to investigate the effect of the ventilation scheme on the prevention of spontaneous combustion in longwall gob areas. This report focuses on the flow patterns within the gob under three different ventilation systems; one-entry and two-entry bleederless systems as well as a three-entry bleeder system. The gas flow in the caved gob area is simulated as a laminar flow through porous media while the gas flow in ventilation airways is simulated as a fully developed turbulent flow. The air flow patterns are visualized using flow path lines. Air velocity contours and vector data are also obtained. The possible location of critical velocity zones where the gob is most liable to spontaneous heating is discussed.

"The microstructural and mechanical properties of iron powders processed in an attrition mill are highly dependent upon the processing environment. Extended high-energy ball milling in argon resulted in nanocrystalline bcc-Fe microstructure, while processing in nitrogen or alloying with carbon resulted in both nanocrystalline bcc-Fe and bct-Fe microstructures. In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, both X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer analysis were used to show that the infused carbon and nitrogen concentrations were predominantly on the grain boundaries. Explosive consolidation resulted in a fully dense product with microstructure similar to the microstructure of the mechanically processed powder. Hardness values of the compacts correlated highly with grain size, independent of the processing conditions.IntroductionNanocrystalline materials have been theorized and shown to have unique properties that make them interesting for material scientists and promising for material engineering applications. To date, most techniques used to generate nanocrystalline materials produce only a few grams of particles(1). High-energy ball-milling, however, is an efficient and effective technique that can produce substantial quantities of nanocrystalline materials with homogenous chemical composition that cannot be produced by conventional processing techniques(3).Applications and material evaluations of nanocrystalline materials require several grams of solid samples. Because nanocrystalline microstructures' are thermodynamically unstable, producing consolidated macro structures of nanocrystalline material has proved to be very difficult(2,3). In particular, retention of the nanocrystalline microstructure during consolidation of nanocrystalline particles has proven to be a problem. In contrast to many consolidation techniques that require elevated temperatures, explosive compaction uses a shock wave for consolidation( 4,5)."

MOST of us will, I think, agree that never before in the history of the coal industry has the human side of our business been so important as today. Since, even in wholly mechanized mining, labor cost is such a large percentage of out total cost we are all deeply concerned not only about the present attitude of our employees but particularly about the future, when the industry returns to a "survival of the fittest" basis. Many things could and should be done about our employee relations in the coal business. Failure to recognize these obligations and do something about them may lead to serious consequences, the least serious of which will be the loss not only of many of our better employees but a large portion of our potential employees, as they graduate from our schools to other in¬dustries. Some of these things should be handled by the industry as a whole whereas others should be done by individual companies. Due to varying conditions and size of organizations it would, at best, be necessary to vary a program to meet the individual needs of each operator.

NI-CR and some Ni-Cr-Fc alloys, when used as electrical resistance heating elements in reducing atmospheres, at times suffer rapid breakdowns due to so-called "green rot." These reducing atmospheres are most frequently used in bright annealing and heat-treating furnaces which are kept for long periods of time at 1500&apos; to 1800°F. The green rot is a preferential oxidation of the chromium in the alloy to such an extent that the remaining metal frequently becomes ferromagnetic. The Curie point (magnetic transition point) at room temperature for a pure Ni-Cr alloy is known to be at about 7 pct Cr.¹ This represents a severe loss in chromium for one popular grade of resistance alloy, which is nominally 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr. The formation of oxides along the grain boundaries makes the ribbon brittle and gives the fracture a green, earthy appearance—hence the name. The authors have studied this phenomenon, simulating the industrial conditions by heating resistance ribbons in various reducing atmospheres, such as moist hydrogen or the atmosphere specified in the ASTM test.² This atmosphere contains 16 pct H2, 10 pct CO, 4 pct C02, 1 pct CH1, 1.5 to 2.5 pct H2O, balance N2. Little success was had in producing severe corrosion with the commercial 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr alloys. It had been noticed, however, that 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy wires deteriorated very rapidly when placed in the bottom of narrow thermocouple protection tubes. The bottoms of the tubes with the wires were heated in air. This took place both in porcelain tubes and in Inconel* tubes either with the cold end open or loosely stoppered with asbestos. On examination the wires showed microstructures which would be classified as green-rot corrosion. Subsequent investigations with various alloy wires confirmed the observation that corrosion occurred in some wires, including 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr alloys, much more rapidly in such tubes than had occurred previously in test atmospheres mentioned above. When 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloys are oxidized with an abundant air supply, the oxide coat consists of both nickel and chromium oxides. In this case thermodynamic equilibrium between the oxides is not established. However, when oxidized 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy specimens were heated to 1500" to 1800°F inside small diameter tubes, the oxide coat transformed to a bright metallic outer layer of nickel or nickel-rich alloy, beneath which appeared a green oxide, followed by intergranularly attacked metal. The obvious explanation is that in the narrow tubes, thermodynamic equilibrium is being established according to the equation NiO + Cr (in alloy) ? Ni + Cr2O3 This reaction is favored due to the fact that the oxygen pressure over nickel oxide is more than 10"&apos; times the oxygen pressure over the green chromium oxide. The initial oxygen in the tubes is depleted very rapidly by oxidation of the wire and of the tube, if it is metallic. A confirmation of the occurrence of the reaction, reduction of NiO by the chromium in the alloy, was obtained by putting oxidized nickel foil into an evacuated quartz tube along with a piece of bright 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy ribbon, and heating the tube at 1820°F for a number of hours. The nickel oxide on the foil was completely reduced to pure nickel, leaving a bright foil. The 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy became strongly magnetic and showed the typical green-rot structure. Weights of the samples before and after testing showed the weight loss of the foil to approximately equal the weight gain of the ribbon. Evidently the bottom of long, narrow protection tubes, stoppered or not, may under certain conditions act just as the sealed quartz tubes in respect to being a confined space in which oxygen is not freely replenished. This condition of oxygen depletion can be prevented by introducing a small amount of air into the bottom of the tube. Many conditions becloud the green-rot phenomenon, such as carburization, sulphidization, and the presence of other corrosive agents. However, these experiments have shown that the basic reaction is a case of internal oxidation which can occur simply by adjusting the oxygen pressure to a low enough level so that the atmosphere will leave the nickel intact and oxidize the chromium. The action of the other agents in commercial atmospheres can then be taken up as individual cases. From these and numerous other tests completed to date or still in progress, it is believed that a more critical evaluation of electrical resistance alloys for their resistance to green-rot corrosion can be made. A much better understanding of the mechanism for this type of corrosion should also result. A more complete report on these experiments will be published later. The ARTA 2008 Project (Alpha Ridge Test of Appurtenance) was a Canadian Government sponsored deep water seismic survey carried out on the high arctic permanent polar ice cap. This Geological Survey of Canada operation was the second seismic research project in the high Arctic and was monitored by the Danish Government. Utilizing 100% air support from Eureka and then helicopters from an ice based tent camp north of Ellesmere Island, the five week study was accomplished in the early spring just after the sun returned to the far north.
