The low-grade nickel laterite ore used in this study was successfully upgraded through selective reduction by industrialized rotary kilns followed by magnetic separation. The results indicated that both iron metallization extent and nickel metallization extent showed obvious linear correlation. In addition, rational roasting temperature and prolonged grinding time could enhance the overall fineness level of reduced laterite nickel ore. The moderate roasting temperature at a range of 1100–1150 °C should be suitable enough to a conversion of total nickel to metallic nickel and partly inhibited the conversion of total iron. Ultimately, the obtained ferronickel alloy with a nickel content of 7.32% and an iron content of 84.15% was prepared successfully from the lowgrade nickel laterite ore containing a nickel content of 1.92%. As the 2018 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., I am pleased to present the 2018 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., Vol. 344. A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). Those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2018 Transactions consists of a total of 59 technical papers, encompassing all 25 papers published in 2018 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering (Vol. 70) and all 26 papers published in 2018 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 35). Additionally, this volume contains 8 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All of the technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our Publications staff. As the 2018 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume. The new year brings an exciting change. The publication of Transactions will cease with this volume. Instead, our Minerals & Metallurgical Processing journal has the new name of Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (MME), and Transactions as well as the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering are incorporated into MME. The journal is published in partnership with Springer Nature, and all SME members have free electronic access to the journal.

The rocks exposed in the phosphate district are of Neogene age and consist of clayey quartz and phosphorite sands overlying phosphatic dolomite. The Bone Valley Formation is redefined as a marine phosphorite containing primary phosphorite and abundant terrigenous sediments. It contains a Middle Miocene vertebrate and invertebrate fauna and conformably overlies the Hawthorn Formation containing similar invertebrate fauna. A new, unnamed formation, with Pliocene and Pleistocene fauna and containing reworked phosphorite, overlies the Bone Valley disconformably. Its phosphorite is derived from the subjacent Bone Valley by post-Middle Miocene erosion and deposition in stream channels and marginal marine environments. The Bone Valley contains two main types of primary marine phosphorite. Orthocbemical phosphorite, a direct precipitate of microcrystalline phosphorite (microsphorite), occurs as a cement or binder in thin beds. Allochemical phosphorite consists of clastic phosphorite particles that were originally formed as microsphorite on another part of the shelf. Microsphorite was deposited in a very shallow open marine environment which had an abnormally high phosphorous content caused by upwelling currents. The mechanism of deposition is still in doubt, but organisms probably were a major factor. Soon after deposition, microsphorite was indurated, periodically torn up, and the resulting fragments transported and deposited elsewhere on the shelf. These processes account for a great portion of the clastic phosphorite in the Miocene deposits of Florida. The primary fossil skeletal material is of minor importance.

Zaldivar is an open pit copper mine operation located in the Atacama Desert, in northern Chile. The plant produces Cu cathodes using 4 solvent extraction trains. The plant was started up May 1995. Since 1996 the plant has been using on-stream analyzers based on X-ray fluorescence and titration for process monitoring and control. Elemental analyzer alone is not able to provide the critical information for plant operation, it has to be complemented by on-stream titrators integrated to one sampling system. The analyzers are located in a prefabricated shelter. The analyzer system project, operation and performance issues are the main topic of this paper.

Os sistemas de automação Nível 2 da LTQ da Aperam estão em operação a mais de uma década. Esses sistemas foram desenvolvidos sobre plataforma de hardware Alpha Server DS20E e sistema operacional OpenVMS 7.2. Apesar da confiabilidade da plataforma utilizada, atualmente está descontinuada pelo fabricante, bem como o serviço de suporte ao sistema operacional utilizado que também foi encerrado. Com a evolução da tecnologia Intel, apresentando baixo custo de hardware, suporte, manutenção e desempenho, foi tomada a decisão de migração dos sistemas de automação de Nível 2 da LTQ para a arquitetura de hardware Intel e sistema operacional Linux. Esta migração teve como objetivo a eliminação da obsolescência a que os sistemas estavam submetidos. A migração envolveu uma estratégia que minimiza riscos e reduz modificações necessárias nos sistemas de automação envolvidos. Dessa forma, bibliotecas de funções com funcionalidades semelhantes as disponíveis no sistema OpenVMS foram desenvolvidas. Este artigo descreve todo esforço envolvido na migração dos sistemas e os resultados obtidos.

The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is becoming the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure have been exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geo¬chemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont, of Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, North Carolina. The area chosen for the study is shown in Figure 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, North Carolina. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low grade metamorphism. The area is now considered to be a 500 million year old active, continental margin.1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks, to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and the Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1. Data used in this study are from three Master's theses conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 3,3,6 In separate studies, well waters5, B-zone soils3, and vein and float quartz6 from the area described were sampled and analyzed. A complex rare metal ore, containing various valuable elements is used in this study. The mineralogy results indicate that the mineral composition of the raw ore is complex, and there are more than thirty-eight kinds of minerals in the raw ore, and the elements, such as Nb, Ti, Fe, REO, Be etc, always form isomorphism relationship. The REO content of the raw ore is 0.45%, and the contents of other rare metals Nb, Ta, Ti and Zr are 0.33%, 0.02%, 0.93% and 2.00% respectively, and the main gangue elements are Si and Al, and their contents are 71.84% and 8.5% respectively. The beneficiation-metallurgy combination process of ?preconcentration-reduction and magnetic separation-acidification and leaching-precipitation? is used to treat the raw ore. The preconcentration of raw ore is realized through high intensity magnetic separation, and the magnetic field intensity is 1.0T, and the rough concentrate with 2.88% REO and 1.95% Nbresidue can be obtained, and the iron recovery is 92.83%, and the REO recovery is 95.87%, and the Nbresidue is treated by hydrometallurgy process of ?acidification-leaching-precipitation?, then the rare earth oxide, niobium concentrate and zircon-bearing residue can be obtained, and the REO recovery is 80.10% and the Nbresidue and the gangue obtained from the high intensity magnetic separation process is separated by gravity separation, and then the zirconium concentrate can be obtained. The indexes of the beneficiation-metallurgy combination process used to treat the complex rare metal ore are as follows. The REO content of the rare earth oxide is 92.58% and the recovery is 58.44%. The Nb2O5 and 27.42% TFe can be obtained. Iron in rough concentrates is removed after reduction and low intensity magnetic separation, then the iron powder with Fe content over 88% and nonmagnetic rare-metal 2O5 recovery is 94.77%. The rare-metal 2O5 recovery is 80.04%. The mixture of the zircon-bearing 2O5 content of niobium concentrate is 28.34% and the recovery is 54.02%. The ZrO2 content of zirconium concentrate is 28.43% and the recovery is 52.35%. The TFe of iron powder is 89.53% and the recovery is 78.13%. The BGRIMM process mineralogy analyser (BPMA) is a new automated mineralogy software platform developed in China. This system consists of the BPMA software platform, controlling a combination of commercially available scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS). The BPMA software controls SEM and EDS through their application programming interfaces, to form an auto-SEM and EDS system that automatically acquires BSE images and X-ray spectra, respectively, and classifies minerals by spectrum-matching. After automated measurement and mineral identification, various quantitative process mineralogical data (e.g., mineral composition, mineral abundance, mineral liberation and intergrowth relationships, mineral associations, particle and grain sizes, particle density distributions, calculated assay, elemental deportments, mineral grade recovery and elemental grade recovery, etc.) would be calculated quickly, accurately and automatically. The BPMA could be used for ore characterisation as a new advanced automated mineralogy technology. The genetic characteristics of members of the genus Acidiphilium are poorly understood. As part of our study of the genetics of these bacteria, a search was made for an endogenous bacteriophage. Such a bacteriophage has been discovered. Several properties of the phage have been investigated. The phage has a lambdoid morphology and is somewhat larger than lambda. A variety of factors which affect phage stability have been investigated. The bacteriophage infects several of the strains that have been tested. Study of this bacteriophage should greatly increase our understanding of genetic mechanisms in Acidiphilium.

Based on systematic definitions of a generalized multiple fan ventilation system, the concepts of an augmented system, its solution curve and the operating points of the original system are introduced. The Quasi-Newton algorithm is applied in combination with the switching-parameter method to ensure a continuous search along an augmented-system solution curve and identify all the possible system operating points on it. Two example networks are analyzed to demonstrate those concepts and the application of the algorithm for identifying operating points of multiple fan ventilation systems.

Lightweight basic refractories suitable for use in some sections of the all-basic furnace were developed. Potential advantages of such refractories are lower weight, improved resistance to thermal shock, and less tendency to spall off the working face. Plant trials in positions not subject to heavy loading or severe erosion seem warranted. Forsterite (2MgO.SiO2), stabilized dolomite (2Ca0?SiO2 + MgO), and chrome-spinel [(Fe,Mg)0?(Cr,Al) 031 refractories were fabricated using bubbles as the principal component in the brick mixtures. Bubbles were blown from melts of the basic raw materials as they were tapped from a conducting-hearth arc-resistance furnace. The bubbles were graded, bonded with synthetic Forsterite plus mineralizers, dry-pressed, and fired to temperatures of 1,600° C. or over in a gas-fired kiln. Refractory properties of the bubble brick were compared with those of insulating refractories made by burning combustibles out or dense brick mixtures. Lightweight refractories fabricated of bubbles were one-third lighter in weight than dense bricks of like materials. Their mechanical strength was satisfactory, and their resistance to thermal shock was excellent. In tolerance to open-hearth slag and in resistance to thermal shock, the chrome-spinel bubble bricks wore the best of the refractories tested. Basic refractories of the insulating type were about 40 percent lighter in weight than dense commercial refractories, but they were mechanically weak and not suitable for superduty service.

This paper reports the results of the study of the influences of concentration and modulus of sodium potassium silicate solution (Na-K activator) and curing mode on the phase composition, mi-crostructure and strength development in the geopolymers prepared using Class F fly ash. X-ray dif-fraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and MAS NMR are utilized in this study. It shows that the compressive strength increases while sodium potassium silicate solution modulus increases, but when modulus exceeds 1.7, the compressive strength decreases, and it decreases markedly while modulus is greater than 2.0. The compressive strength improves with increase of sodium potassium silicate solution concentration. When the concentration is 36%, the compressive strength reaches the maximum. Elevated temperature can increase the strength of samples synthesized using sodium potassium silicate solution with 32% concentration and modulus 1.2. Compared to the strength of the sample cured at 50?, the strength of the samples cured at 65? and 80? are higher at 1 day and 3 days, but when cured at 80?, strength is smaller than that cured at 50? for 7 days. When temperature is too high, too long curing time will decrease the strength. Long precuring at room temperature before application of heat is beneficial for strength development, and there is about 10%~50% increase in strength of the samples cured at 1 day precuring and 2 days elevated temperature as compared to the strengths of the samples cured for 3 days at elevated temperature or cured for 28 days at room temperature. The main product of reaction in the geopolymeric material is amorphous alkali aluminosilicate gel.

In pursuance of the investigation into the influence of various elements on the properties of lead during the past year, the effect of several elements on the creep rate of commercially pure lead has been investigated; a standard initial stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. having been adopted for comparison purposes. Other work which has been carried out indicates that the relative results of creep tests may be altered by varying the applied stress, but this aspect of the problem will need to await further investigations for itscomplete elucidation. The results obtained with dilute tellurium alloys are considered sufficiently interesting, and in some respects are so extraordinary, as to warrant publicatiorr at this stage.n must be realised however that, since the results obtained appear to be at variance with those said to have been obtained in practice and those previously published, the present investigation can only be considered as a contribution to our knowledge of the general problem.Consequently it is not considered advisable or necessary to offer detailed explanation of the results given. In fact, some features of the tests about to be described will need further investigation before an adequate explanation is possible.

In December 2009, the Italian High Speed Rail Network AV began running over the full 1000 km system length from Turin, at the foothills of the Alps to Salerno, on the seacoast south of the volcano Mt. Vesuvius. It runs through Alpine rivers, highly seismic active zones, mountains, river plains, and through some of the most densely populated areas in Europe as well as some of its most expensive real estate. The Italian High Speed Network?s technical/economic constraints and its regulatory/socio-environmental concerns well may mirror similar obstacles set to confront the nascent California High Speed Rail Program. The two types of constraints must be dealt with together to reach the best construction solution. It is estimated that more than 20% of Italian High Speed Rail Network costs were spent on ground engineering including over 150 km of tunnels, 200 km of viaducts and bridges and 650 km of embankments and trenches. However, it also is estimated that 25% of costs were spent on social and environmental integration of the new rail lines including over 6 square miles of green offsets, 160 km of anti-noise walls, and 300 agreements for socio-environmental work. This paper will look at four examples of innovative ground engineering solutions, each with its own intricate set of constraints: ? Systemic process mineralogy study on Baerbulawu refractory hematite ore in Kazakhstan has been carried out. The ore contains Fe 41.34%, and 87.26 % of which exists in hematite. Most hema-tite occurs as fine or ultrafine grains and its average size is only 0.015mm. The gangue is mainly composed of quartz, mica, chlorite, kaolinite and other clay minerals. The liberation of hematite is only 66% when the ore is grinded to 75% ?0.074mm, while part of gangue is already liberated from hematite under this grinding condition, so these gangue can be cast away by magnetic separation in advance. Hematite will not liberate completely from gangue untill grinding fineness reaches 86% ?0.038mm, at the same time, free particles of ultrafine hematite tend to coagulate randomly with quartz and clay minerals, so appropriate dispersant is necessary to pre-vent hematite and clay minerals from coagulation. Based on the process mineralogy research, final technology flowsheet is high-intensity magnetic separation by coarse grinding?rough magnetic concentrate regrinding?inverse flotation, and an ideal index is achieved. The yield of final iron concentrate is 43.46%, and its grade and recovery are 66.76% and 70.55% respectively. The research result is also useful to other similar iron ores.

This paper describes two micro-beam analytical techniques(Dynamic SIMS and TOF-SIMS) which have become an intricate part of a comprehensive analytical approach for precious metal (PM) ore characterization and process mineralogy or deportment studies. The value of the D-SIMS technique is its capacity for accurate analysis in the sub ppm range along with the ability to produce high resolution elemental maps. The TOF-SIMS is significant for speciating and quantifying preg-robbed Au on the surface of carbonaceous material. In combination with traditional assays, the two techniques can provide invaluable information regarding the distribution of PMs within an ore along with providing insight into potential sources of PM loss in processing or where losses have occurred in process streams.

Sintered titanium carbide has been extensively used since the early 1980s for demanding wear-resistant applications and, in particular, in environments characterized by high temperature and oxidation. Thanks to its physical characteristics, especially its low density, titanium carbide (TiC) has been successfully applied in the manufacture of cassette guide rollers for hot steel rolling. However, the peculiar characteristics of the sintered Ti carbides make it difficult their redressing and hence this has always represented the limit for a more extensive application. Very often iron based alloys are preferred even if, in general, they are less cost effective just because they are easier to be redressed by turning. The availability of a simple, compact, fully automatic and reasonably priced CNC machine; specialized in the grinding of guide rollers and able to operate accurately and efficiently -both in contour and in plunge- can definitively solve TiC’s redressing problems and render its use even more widespread and attractive.

"Arsenic removal from high arsenic gold concentrate is conducive to increase the mineral value and realize the mineral comprehensive utilization. This study investigated the alkaline pressure oxidation leaching (APOL) of an arsenical gold concentrate in lower temperature to separate the arsenic into filtrate. The effects of temperature, NaOH concentration, solid-liquid ratio, reaction pressure and stirring speed on the leaching efficiency were investigated, and the characteristics of the gold concentrate and leaching residues were evaluated using XRD and SEM analysis methods. The obtained results showed that by using lower temperature (<60?) it is possible to avoid the production of elemental sulfur during the leaching process, which is benefit for the oxidation of arsenopyrite; When the reaction was carried out under appropriate conditions, more than 98% of the arsenic will be extracted into the filtrate as the form of arsenate or thioarsenate. INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the recovery of gold from refractory arsenical gold ore. The arsenic in this kind of ore usually exists as the form of arsenopyrite, and the gold surrounded by arsenopyrite exists as the form of fine particles, which will give many difficulties to metallurgical work. When the content of arsenic in the gold ore is more than 0.5%, it will seriously penalize the smelting efficiency (Ruiz et al., 2014). So pretreatment of the refractory gold ore is necessary to obtain the largest economic value and environmental benefits (Balaz et al., 2000). The oxidation pretreatment processes mainly include roasting oxidation, pressure oxidation, chemical treatment and biological treatment (Ann et al., 1992; Kou and Chen, 2012; Tongamp et al., 2010; Fernandez et al., 1995; Lin and Zheng, 1996). Among them, the roasting oxidation and pressure oxidation are the more ordinary processes in industry. The roasting oxidation process is the mature and adaptable technology, but the production of waste gas containing sulfur and arsenic will pollute the environment. The pressure oxidation method possesses certain metallurgical and environmental advantages, and can efficiently decompose the mineral. According to the different solution media, the pretreatment can be divided into alkaline and acidic pressure leaching pretreatments (Papangelakis and Demopoulos, 1990; Hiskey and Sanchez, 1995). The acidic pressure oxidation method has been used in most smelting plants for high arsenic gold ore pretreatment, while the alkaline pressure oxidation is still not widely applied. Compared with the acidic pressure oxidation, the alkaline pressure oxidation can be realized under lower temperatures."

This paper presents a modelling study of a cemented paste backfill in an underground stope. The model was developed to help provide a better understanding of what is happening in the stope during the filling stage of the stope. In order to do this, the model incorporates the paste rise rate, stope geometry, and time-dependent input parameters. This paper looks at the effect of geometry in two parts. The first part compares a series of simple rectangular stope models. These models differ in size both in two and three dimensions. The second part compares the results of four 2D models together and then to the field instrumentation data. Part of this section introduces the geometry and instrumentation within the test stope.
