The planning of an underground coal mine requires a complex blend of technical expertise, experience and subjective design criteria implemented by the mining engineer. Currently the procedure is largely manual and requires considerable resources to generate a single mine plan. Often three or four people are assigned to work in the development of a single draft layout. Evaluation of the layouts is also tedious as it requires many repetitive calculations. The evaluation of layouts developed manually generally attempts to derive a single economically feasible solution. Operational constraints in underground coal mining such as manpower, time, equipment, etc, do not allow the generations of more than one alternative layout. As a result, the first plan is generally the only one considered. Computer-aided mine planning can automate many of the manual procedures and calculations involved in mine planning thus allowing to evaluate many layouts and mining strategies and to select the optimum plan with confidence. An optimized planning procedure will also provide the capability to evaluate mine performance continuously and critically, thereby helping to maximize return on investment.

Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) have a ductile matrix containing ceramic particles, Due to their improved wear properties, Al?SiC composites have economical applications in many industrial uses where wear is a problem, One of the most serious difficulties in manufacturing Al-SiC composites is obtaining adequate 'wetting' of the particles by the melt. In this research work, a stir casting system was designed for the improved manufacturing Al-SiC composites, The effect of some production variables such as the addition of SiC particles to the aluminum melt on wettability, was also studied. The results showed that the manual addition of particles would not be successful in manufacturing and that a system of adding silicon carbide particles through controlled temperature, atmosphere and improved mixing was needed.

"Use of lime in seawater as a pyrite depressant decreases Mo recovery in flotation of Cu- Mo sulfide ores. When technology that uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) to depress pyrite is applied, the process is carried out at pH 6.5–7.5, the range where Mo recovery is higher than the usual pH 11.0–12.0 when lime is applied. Redox conditions and chemical reactions involved in depression mechanisms of pyrite by MBS, or sodium sulfite, in seawater are investigated and discussed based on the acidifying effect of MBS, oxidation of sulfite ions by dissolved oxygen, and the role of catalyst of some metal cations (e.g., copper ions) adsorbed on pyrite’s surface.RÉSUMÉ L’utilisation de chaux dans de l’eau de mer comme agent déprimant de la pyrite réduit la récupération de molybdène (Mo) dans la flottation de minerais sulfurés de Cu-Mo. Lorsque l’on applique la technologie utilisant du métabisulfite (MBS) de sodium comme agent déprimant de la pyrite, le procédé se fait à un pH de 6,5 à 7,5, gamme dans laquelle la récupération de Mo est supérieure au procédé habituel utilisant un pH de 11,0 à 12,0 lorsque l’on applique de la chaux. Les conditions de réduction-oxydation (redox) et les réactions chimiques impliquées dans les mécanismes de dépression de la pyrite par le MBS (ou sulfite de sodium) dans de l’eau de mer sont étudiées et débattues sur la base de l’effet acidifiant du MBS, de l’oxydation des ions sulfites par de l’oxygène dissous et du rôle de catalyseur de certains cations métalliques (par exemple les ions de cuivre) adsorbés à la surface de la pyrite. "In at least three out of every four working faces in metal mines there is no attempt made to cause air circulation other than by use of compressed air, and in at least nine cases out of ten the compressed air is released merely by opening, or partly opening, the valve and allowing the compressed air to escape through open air hose used to convey the compressed air to the drilling machines. Usually no blowers are in use during periods of drilling, as the exhaust from the drill provides cool, comparatively fresh air for the driller; however, in some instances, the compressed-air line is provided with a tea connection, which permits taking air for the drill from one side of the tee, and air for ventilation through a separate hose used as a blower, simultaneously with drilling.Table 1 contains temperature and humidity data as to compressed-air blowers from open end of air hose at 36 working places in eleven metal mines of four States, embracing the mining of gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc ores, and at horizons ranging from 500 feet below the surface to as low as 4900 feet.It is noticed that the ordinary air surrounding the worker at the face gives an average wet bulb temperature of 81.7° F. for the 36 working faces, with 84.7° F. dry bulb and 87.2 per cent relative humidity. The average wet bulb tem¬perature of 36 readings at these working faces of compressed air at the end of the,hose as the air issues from the hose was 67.4° F., or 14.3 degrees lower than the average wet bulb readings of the air of the working places; however, the average dry bulb temperature of the 36 readings of compressed air as it issued from the end of the hose was 79.7° F., or only 5 degrees less than that of the general air (84.7°); the relative humidity was 51.1 per cent as against 87.2 per cent for the surrounding air. Readings were taken in five raises, seven crosscuts, ten drifts and 14 stopes.It will be noted that the velocity or movement of the general atmosphere at each of the entire 36 working faces, was found to be practically imperceptible; this might readily be inferred since compressed air is rarely used on blowers if there is adequate circulation of the general air of the place. Where rook temperatures could be obtained readily, they are shown; it is noticeable that the dry bulb temperature of the air of the working place varies little from the rock temperature, and that the dry bulb temperature of the compressed air as it issues from end of air hose varies only a few degrees from the temperature of the surrounding rock; in some instances the dry bulb temperature of the compressed air as it issued from the end of the air hose was higher than the rock temperature or the dry bulb temperature of the surrounding air."

The ability to simulate the explosive effects of land mines on military vehicles is a valuable capability in the defense community. The current competency levels of such simulations, however, are in need of improvement. Experiments have been conducted to measure the explosive induced impulse of a land mine on a steel plate placed above the explosive charge. The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a variety of simulation tests conducted in order to correctly predict the empirical impulse data gathered in corresponding experiments. The computer hydrocode, AUTODYN v5.0.01 (Century Dynamics, 2003), is the simulation code used to simulate, and process the results. The experimental data has not been made available to allow computer analysts to exercise their codes on the problem without the temptation to tweak parameters in order to match computer code predictions with experimental results

"Falconbridge Limited is presently developing flowsheet alternatives for implementation at the Strathcona Mill. The main thrust for change arises from the need to reject more pyrrhotite from the concentrate. To maintain appropriate levels of sulphur in the smelter concentrate, however, enhanced removal of non-sulphide gangue minerals must be realized. This could best be done in the Non-magnetics flotation circuit.Laboratory investigations were followed by an on-stream pilot test at Strathcona. The application of a column cleaner on the Non-magnetics concentrate resulted in significantly lower levels of fine gangue at equivalent sulphides recovery.This paper discusses the laboratory and pilot testing and results, with a focus on piloting. Also included is a discussion of the Strathcona Mill Flowsheet and the role of the Nonmagnetics flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONFalconbridge Ltd. is currently developing means to reduce atmospheric sulphur dioxide emissions. One alternative is a reduction in the amount of pyrrhotite in Strathcona Mill concentrate, which reports to the smelter. Pyrrhotite in the Falconbridge ores contains an average of 39 percent sulphur and 0.64 percent nickel. By comparison, pentlandite contains an average of 33 percent sulphur and 34 percent nickel.A consequence of the rejection of pyrrhotite is a decrease in the sulphur assay in the remaining concentrate. This decrease causes downstream difficulties in the roasting process. Therefore, the content of non-sulphide gangue in the mill concentrate must also be reduced in order to maintain sulphur grades adequate for roasting. The resulting concentrate will have lower sulphur dioxide emissions while maintaining nickel production."

The Taharoa plant of New Zealand Steel Mining Limited extracts a 57% Fe titano-magnetite concentrate from a large mineral sand deposit 90 miles south of Auckland on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. The plant consists of an 18-inch suction cutter dredge which feeds a 750 TPH floating separation plant. An initial gravity/ size separation is obtained using cone concentrators. Finished concentrate is produced by a combination of conventional drum magnetic separators and top fed wet Mortsell magnetic separators. Concentrate is stockpiled by cyclone, and reclaimed by a bull- dozer and tunnel system. Repulped concentrate is pumped by sub- marine pipeline to slurry tankers anchored at a single buoy one mile offshore. Current concentrate production rate is in excess of one million metric tons per year.

(communication to the Secretary*).-In order to set at rest any doubts in regard to the reasons for selecting the Callow pneumatic flotation process for use in the concentrators of the Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., at Clifton and Morenci, I am presenting the following facts gained from the results of test work carried out on the Callow and Cole-Bergman types of flotation machines at Morenci. Prior to the comparative test of merit between the Callow and Cole-Bergman machines, many months' time and a large amount of money had been expended in the development and testing of the Cole-Bergman machine, and it was necessary to decide quickly what make of machine was best to install. The Callow pneumatic flotation process was recommended for installation in our concentrators for the following reasons: The results indicated: 1. That the Callow system made the highest extraction of copper values from the feed treated. 2. That the Callow system was simpler to operate and could he operated it a lower cost. 3. That the Callow system operated with a lower air pressure. (The question of the actual power consumption of the two types of machines was not definitely settled at this time.) During the official test period the Callow flotation apparatus showed an additional recovery of from 1 to 1.5 lb. of copper per ton more than the Cole-Bergman machine, this difference being maintained by further treatment of the tailing from both machines. The simplicity of the operation of the Callow flotation system is one of its notable features, two operators per shift being able to handle 90 standard cells and blower equipment.

Construction of the Shot Tower Metro Station in Baltimore, Maryland was performed in two phases. In the first phase, a contractor was retained to excavate the station in order to construct twin tunnels from the Shot Tower Station to the John Hopkins Station. The retention system for this 70' deep excavation consisted of a Soldier Pile in Tremie Concrete (SPTC) wall supported by cross-lot bracing. In phase two, The Clark Construction Group, Inc. was retained to construct the station interior structure, two entrances, two station ancillary shaft structures and the track work for the station and tunnel. The excavation for the construction of the two entrances adjacent to the 70' deep station SPTC wall had to proceed prior to completion of the station structure due to the tight construction schedule. A system of overlapping secant piles was specified as a vertical support of excavation element for the West Entrance. The secant piles would have provided a watertight, rigid support to resist the load from the SPTC wall constructed in phase one. A watertight system was required in order to minimize the settlement of adjacent buildings supported on wood piles. Clark Construction was concerned with the constructability, cost and performance of the specified secant piles and looked for other innovative methods of providing a watertight and rigid system. Substitution of a reinforced slurry wall in lieu of the secant piles was cost prohibitive due to the additional cost of concrete placed under tremie. Clark, being familiar with cement-bentonite cut-off walls and slurry wall construction procedures, proposed the construction of a PSHG wall, in lieu of the secant piles. The PSHG wall construction consisted of trenching 30" wide by 20' long by 60' deep panels under a self-hardening slurry. Once the excavation for a panel was completed, a 60' deep prefabricated soldier beam and lagging panel was placed in the slurry. The slurry design mix then self-hardened within the cure time, allowing excavation for the structure to proceed This paper will discuss the design, details and construction methods used on the PSHG wall and will compare the advantages of the PSHG system to conventional support systems.

During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and the results are described in this report.

"A planned production increase of 1.25 million tonnes per year at Domtar's salt mine in Goderich, Ontario required an increase in the underground mine ventilation system from 320,000 to 700,000 scfm, The design of the expanded facility included the addition of a 22-foot-diameter shaft to augment the existing production and service shafts.A preliminary review of the ventilation requirement s indicated that in order to pr ovide good economic design for the expanded system, a comprehensive ventilation survey of the existing system was required. The survey was completed in the latter part of 1980, and subsequent engineering design and equipment selection proceeded throughout 1981.This paper presents the methods used to carry out the survey. Particular attention is given to the numerous challenges presented in determining air flows in the large 45-ftwide by 43-ft-high airways. Emphasis is placed on practical field survey techniques.A mathematical model of the ventilation system using a computer program is described, and the application of this program to provide design data and assist in equipment selection is discussed. Economic sizing of airways and fan selection are analyzed considering horsepower and operating costs.IntroductionThe Goderich Mine of Sifto Salt Division, Domtar Inc., is located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron in the town of Goderich, Ontario, and has been operating since November 1959. The salt is extracted by a modified room-and-pillar method, and the workings advance at a rate of 1.5 miles per year by undercutting, drilling and blasting. The surface mine area consists of a 12-acre site in the Goderich harbour, at the mouth of the Maitland River, and the underground property consists of approximately 2,700 acres lying mainly under Lake Huron."

The inauguration of a geological department for the mines of North Broken Hill Limited necessitated the provision of accurate plans and sections upon which geological facts and projections might be plotted.Unfortunately, the basic data were very inadequate. For the British Section, sill survey plans were available, but no regular stope plans. Filling surveys had been preserved for many stopes, but on innumerable pieces of tracing linen, without heights of any kind, and not altogether reliable (as indicated by the finding of very inconsistent duplicates). For the bulk of the old stopes no plans exist at all. The expenditure of much time and patience has resulted in the co-ordination of most of the existing stope data, but the British Section must for the rest of its life continue to have surprises in store, as has been the case for many years past. Manufacture and preservation of stope records has, of course, been on a sound footing during recent years. No reliable cross-sections of the British Section were available.The Marsh, Junction, and Junction North Sections have for the most part very poor data. In the North Section, level plans were fairly reliable, and cross sections of the lode made for ore reserve purposes have been preserved for quite a few years. No floor plans of stopes were kept, however, until a couple of years ago.Diamond Drill records vary in quality. Practically none exist for the Junction and Junction North Sections. The passage of chloroform vapour in a carrier of oxygen through two nickel sulphide ores heated to 380°C converted the nickel to the water soluble chloride form. In one ore the nickel (2·75 per cent) was presentas violarite ((Ni, Fe)3S4) whereas in the second it was present as pentlandite, ((Fe, Ni)9S8) (4·9 per cent Ni).A similar technique was utilized to convert nickel in nickeliferous laterites (1·6 per cent Ni) into a soluble chloride using town gas instead of oxygen as a carrier.With both techniques greater than 90 per cent extraction was achieved.

The fully mechanized longwall mining was employed in a shallow coal seam that was under the gobs of room and pillar mining and overlain by thin bedrock and thick loose sands. Operational practices have demonstrated that severe accidents would occur including roof structure instability, roof steps, damages of shield supports, and face bumps triggered by the large area roof weighting, resulting in serious threats to the safety of underground miners and equipment. This paper uses Shigetai Mine, located in the Ordos area, Inner Mongolia, as the study site. It fully considers the geological conditions of 3-1-2 coal seam and employs theoretical analysis, 3DEC numerical simulation, and field measurements to analyze the overlying strata movement for the shallow seams under an abandoned room and pillar mine without pillar extraction. The research results serve as an excellent guide to mining in similar geological and mining conditions.

The desire for minimising impacts of mining activities on the environment, and in particular, water resources; is usually tempered by the costs and practicalities of implementing æbest practiceÆ measures. This paper briefly discusses the theoretical and practical options for water management for typical mines and quarries in a range of environments to assess if adverse impacts can be completely eliminated or at least be perceived as doing so. The regulatory requirements for water resources management are usually an essential part of mine planning and operations that can be a primary focus for all stakeholders. As such they can distract attention from implementing best practice in water management for the benefit of the environment and the community for altruistic reasons that have a long-term benefit for the mining industry as a whole. Cost-effective options for supply, demand and quality management of water that comply with basic regulatory requirements are readily available. Making a mine æinvisibleÆ in a practical sense, in terms of impacts on water resources would require eliminating potentially contaminated discharges, minimising demand, maximising reuse and recycling and putting back a healthy proportion of the clean water that is taken out of the natural environment for use in mine operations. This may sound simple enough and there are many well-known standard approaches that are usually applied. But which are the most effective, and who benefits? New approaches to water management are becoming more affordable and can benefit the bottom line as well as the environment, but can they make a mine ædisappearÆ? The perception of whether a mine is æinvisibleÆ in terms of its impacts on water resources is as important as the actions taken to try to achieve such an objective. The viewpoints and thresholds of perceptions of the different stakeholders are therefore relevant to how ævisibleÆ mining activities become.

The mechanism of resulfurization in the desulfurization process with magnesium vapor produced in situ by aluminothermic reduction of magnesium oxide was clarified in the present work. The influences of various operating parameters on the resulfurization were studied and the methods that could prevent resulfurization were proposed. There are two kinds of mechanisms of resulfurization in the desulfurization process with magnesium. One is decomposition of the desulfurization product of MgS under the inert atmosphere. The other is oxidation of MgS under the oxidative atmosphere. Under the present experimental conditions, lowering operating temperature and oxygen partial pressure in the atmosphere could effectively prevent the resulfurization. Adding CaO onto the melt surface was an effective method for preventing the resulfurization due to transformation of the desulfurization product of MgS into the more stable compound of CaS. Since addition of the activated charcoal powders greatly decreased the transfer rate of oxygen in the atmosphere to the melt surface, it also reduced the resulfurization remarkably.

North American Palladium is the owner/operator of the Lac des Iles mine located 115 km north of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The mine has produced an average of 65,000 ounces of palladium since 1994. Lac des Iles is currently undergoing the first phase of a major expansion that will increase ore production from 2,400 tons per day to 15,000 tons per day. A future expansion is being contemplated for 30,000 tons per day. The current expansion will increase palladium output to 250,000 ounces per year. The mine plan for the ultimate pit results in an excavation 1 km long by 800 m wide and over 450 m deep. This makes the ultimate pit at Lac des Iles one of the ten deepest open pits in the world, and the largest in Canada. This paper outlines the geotechnical data collection and design methodology for the ultimate open pit at Lac des Iles.

The impeller and stator are the most important components that can significantly influence the performance of flotation cells directly. The performance of the impeller and stator of KYF flotation cell is revealed by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) simulation in this paper. A method of obtaining the circulation volume is proposed. The circulation volume is proportional to third power of impeller diameter. And the circulation volume increases linearly with the increasing of the speed. CFD simulation can draw the conclusions that there is a proportional relationship between power consumption, third power of speed and fifth power of impeller diameter. CFD prediction results agree with the theoretical formula. The difference between the forward and backward impeller is analysed in the paper. The circulation volume of the backward impeller is obviously larger than that of the forward impeller under the same condition, but power consumption of the backward impeller is lower. It is demonstrated that the impeller and stator system of KYF flotation cell is an efficient and reasonable stirring mechanism. CFD simulation could be reliably used in flotation cell design and optimization.

Montana Tech has been engaged in fundamental research on the processing of critical materials for more than a decade. Efforts include examining novel reagents for the flotation of Rare Earth Minerals (REMs). For this paper, research results on a collector, salicyl hydroxamic acid (SHA), are presented. Various REMs were examined and include the rare earth oxides (REOs), carbonates (RECs), and phosphates (REPs) of a suite of Rare Earth Elements (REEs). Differences are attributed to solution and surface chemistry, coordination number, and ionic diameter. SHA adsorption follows an ion-exchange process that leads to chemisorbed and surface-precipitated states, depending mostly on pH. Many effects are directly attributed to lanthanide contraction. Results should also be applicable to other REM/collector systems and further suggest that REM flotation should consider dual collectors.

A detailed study was undertaken to beneficiate sub-grade iron ore sample from Kenojhar District, Orissa, India containing 57% Fe (T), 7.7% SiO2, 4.8% Al2O3, 4 % L.O.I. 0.4% TiO2,1.3 % Mn and traces of S(T) to make it suitable for the user industry. The mineralogical study indicated that it predominantly consists of haematite with subordinate amounts of goethite and clay. Quartz, Cryptomelane / Psilomelane, Pyrolusite, Gibbsite, Feldspar and Muscovite mica were present in very minor to trace amounts. The Denver grind ability tests indicated, that the sample could be categorized as ?medium soft to medium.? The Bond ball mill work index was determined to be 14.19 kwh per short ton. The beneficiation process involved classification followed by tabling of the classified sand, ground to minus 48 mesh size. The table slimes were subjected to Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS). The developed process yielded a composite concentrate from tabling and WHIMS operations assaying 65% Fe(T), 2% SiO2, 1.8% Al2O3, 2% Mn and 0.9% LOI with a recovery of 60.1% Fe (T), amounting to 52.5 wt.% yield. To meet the size specifications for pellet making, it was further ground. Dewatering studies were also carried out on the ground combined concentrate and rejects. The thickener area of ground combined concentrate using 0.02 kg/t of Sufloc A 1115 flocculant was 0.02 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. And for the combined rejects using 0.12 kg/t of flocculant, it was 0.035 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. The moisture content, in the pressure filtration cake, in the ground combined concentrate product was 10.0%, and productivity was 506.7 kg/m2h. Thus, by thickening and filtration of process products, 90% of water used in the process could be recovered. The study highlights the development of a simple and cost effective flowsheet with almost complete water recovery for a subgrade iron ore sample. Keywords: tabling, WHIMS, thickener, filtration
