The mining district of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF) in southeastern Brazil contributes to 70 per cent of the Brazilian iron ore production, which reached 370 Mt in 2010. Traditionally, four iron ore types were mined in the QF region:1. soft haematite,2. hard haematite,3. friable ‘itabirite’ (the Brazilian name for metamorphosed banded iron formation), and4. canga (an indurated iron-rich crust).With the exception of the hard haematite, these categories derive from supergene enrichment of the Paleoproterozoic Cauê Itabirite. High current iron ore demand means that the QF high grade supergene ores will be depleted in a few decades. Consequently, several mining projects are being developed to exploit unenriched, fresh itabirite. Among them, the Mineração Usiminas Serra Azul project in northwestern QF is one of the most advanced. Four major itabirite types occur in the QF region:1. siliceous (or standard),2. dolomitic,3. amphibolitic, and4. magnetitic.The dominant type in Serra Azul region is a fresh siliceous itabirite, composed essentially of haematite, martite and quartz that averages 36 per cent Fe (51.5 per cent Fe2O3) and 47 per cent SiO2. The second type, the magnetitic itabirite, consisting of magnetite, martite, gruneritecummingtonite, quartz, dolomite, stilpnomelane, and subordinate haematite, is typically a strongly magnetic greenish banded iron formation with the iron grade varying between 25 and 35 per cent. Chemically, it differs from the siliceous itabirite due to the relatively high CaO, MgO and, consequently, high LOI contents. Together with supergene ores, fresh itabirites have been included in the ore reserves of the Serra Azul project. We anticipate that all the four types of fresh itabirite will be incorporated as ore in the QF region, causing a huge increase on the iron ore resources of the district, and representing enormous environmental and technological challenges for the local iron ore industry.

The search. for massive sulphide orebodies is steadily being extended to greater depths as well as expanding outward into the large portion of the earth's surface where the sulphide bodies are deeply weathered. Massive sulphide orebodies are generally not large in dimensions. They are not like disseminated type sulphide bodies that form large ground exploration targets that can be detected at greater and greater depths simply by increasing the geometrical spacing between the geophysical transmitter and receiver. In¬creasing the transmitter-receiver spacing with massive sulphide bodies eventually "waters down" the anomaly from the body until it disappears into noise. If high surface conductivity is present, as is common in areas of deep weathering, the problem is compounded by the increasing response of the surface layer, as the receiver-transmitter spacing is expanded. The search to greater depths has important implications other than just detection of the orebody. Drilling costs are increased and the probability of missing the target are increased. Missing an orebody is an expense that is difficult to evaluate in dollars per line mile of survey especially since one does not know the value of what was missed. A ground Pulse EM method has the capabilities of solving the problems of deeper exploration particularly in areas of surface weathering it can attain deep penetration without large coil spacings, it also provides information from a complete range of frequencies. The method has other operational advantages since it is free of geometrical restrictions as to coil alignments and can operate in areas of high power line noise.

Hafnium appears to be among the more abundant of the newly discovered elements . Though quite widely distributed in nature , its compounds chemically so resembled those of zirconium , its sister element , that it escaped detection until 1923 , when Coster and Hevesy announced the discovery of the element , to which they gave the name of " hafnium " , from Hafniae , the Latin name for Copenhagen , where their research work was performed . Hafnium has so far been found only as a minor constituent of zirconium minerals . Zirconium as an element was discovered more than 140 years ago , but only a few unimportant uses were found for the metal or its compounds until some 18 years ago ; it is still classed among the rarer commercial metals . It is not surprising , therefore , that hafnium has not yet found a definite place for itself in industry . Nevertheless it has commanded a considerable interest among scientists ; and in 1930 some 70 grams of perfectly pure oxide of hafnium were prepared in Europe . A commercial future for hafnium is already glimpsed in the radio industry , and its high melting point and electronic emissivity have already led to the taking out of patents for its use in radio tubes and incandescent electric lamp filaments and for the cathode surfaces of devices such as X- ray tubes and rectifiers .

After the primary or secondary lead production the bullion lead is remelted and charged into a vessel with following refining process. The removing of arsenic, antimony and tin takes place by salt slags or oxidizing gases like air or pure oxygen. Due to the increasing lead price, Messer Austria GmbH in cooperation with the institute of Nonferrous Metallurgy at the University of Leoben have developed a new process named OXIPOT for the refining of tin, arsenic and antimony. The OXIPOT process is in principle based on purging technology with a ceramic or steel purging device. This leads to an increased retention time of the refining products due to the deeper bath level and an optimized specific reaction volume concerning the bubble size. This paper describes the process, pilot plant, and thermodynamic calculations for the optimization concerning the selectivity of element removal.

"INTRODUCTIONRio Algom's involvement with the Enviro-Clear thickener began in May 1975, when tests on a laboratory waif were carried out by our Research and Development group. Commencing in June, further tests were carried out using a 3 foot diameter pilot unit. By December, a 30 foot full-scale thickener had been installed. In the near future, 3 more Enviro-Clear thickeners will be commissioned. With in the space of a year, almost $2.5 million had been committed to liquid/ solid separation facilities using the Enviro-Clear thickener. This paper briefly traces the extent and development of this commitment.BRIEF HISTORY OF QUIRKEQuirke Mine started operating in September 1956 at a rated capacity of 3,000 TOD. Because of market conditions, Quirke was shut down in December 1960. The facilities were re-opened at an increased capacity of 4,000 TPD in July 1968, by which time the demand for uranium had returned. Also, a second shaft was sunk, and by 1970, all of the ore treated in the concentrator was coming from the new Quirke II mine. The Quirke I stopes were allowed to fill with natural seepage. As well, acidic barren solution from the concentrator was pumped underground.With increasing demand for uranium, the capacity of Quirke will be further expanded to 7,000 TPD by 1978. Studies of how this expansion could best he carried out led to the consideration of a fairly new piece of equipment, the Enviro-Clear thickener, for certain operations in the concentrator. President McAuliffe presided, with C. H. Mathewson as associate chairman. Americo Albala was first called on to discuss the work of the Pan American Institute of Mining Engineering and Geology. C. Will Wright said that the need for such an organization was evident, and a resolution was passed asking the incoming President to appoint a committee to investigate cooperation with that body, of which Mr. Albala is executive secretary.

FeMn alloys are typically produced with lumpy ore or sinters. Minara Autlan, the Mexican FeMn producer, is however making Mn-nodules as a raw material for Mn-alloy production. The Mn nodules have been characterized by XRF, XRD, by wet chemical methods and by EPMA. The Mn/Fe ratio is somewhat lower compared to commercial Mn ore on the marked. The basicity of the ore is however close to 1, and additional fluxes may not be used. The Mn-nodules will be in a state of manganosite (MnO), tephroite ((Mn, Ca)2SiO4) and galaxite ((Mn,Mg)Al2O4). This leads to a low melting temperature area. A low porosity and low amount of higher Mn-oxides gives a high thermal strength to the nodules.

Os tubos de Plástico Reforçado com Fibras de Vidro, também conhecidos como tubos de PRFV são pouco utilizados em obras de infraestrutura no Brasil, principalmente por desconhecimento técnico da sua vida estrutural. Este trabalho tem como objetivo verificar a expectativa mínima de 50 (cinquenta) anos de utilização dos tubos de PRFV. A metodologia adotada consiste na realização de ensaios mecânicos de longa duração em corpos de prova de tubos de PRFV por mais de 10.000 horas (1,4 anos), conforme rigor da norma ASTM D 2992 – Procedimento B. Este ensaio é comumente conhecido como ensaio de HDB (Hydrostatic Design Basis). Os resultados mostraram que a metodologia utilizada é adequada para verificar e certificar a vida estrutural dos tubos de PRFV, bem como evidenciou que o valor de HDB encontrado é satisfatório e compatível, quando comparado aos outros ensaios de HDB realizados no mundo em tubos de PRFV fabricados pelo mesmo processo produtivo de enrolamento contínuo.

"Metal aluminum produced by non-electrolysis process received much attention due to its lower energy consumption. In this paper, carbothermic reduction and carbothermic-chlorination of alumina in normal pressure and vacuum were studied. The products were examined by means of XRD, EDS and SEM. During the carbothermic reduction process using carbon reductant in normal pressure, no metal aluminum was found. However, when coal was used as reductant, a mixture containing metallic aluminum, A14C3, and silicon was obtained, but metallic aluminum couldn't be separated from the mixture. During the carbothermic-chlorination process in vacuum, Al404C and Al4C3 were produced by the reaction between alumina and carbon, and Al Ch gas reacted with Al404C and Al4C3 to produce Al Cl gas. Metallic aluminum was produced due to the disproportionation of A!Cl gas and condensed on the collecting plate. Meanwhile, the initial temperature of carbothermic reduction of alumina reduced in vacuum compared with that in normal pressure.IntroductionIndustrial production of primary aluminum is carried out in alumina cell by the so-called Hall- Heroult process, necessitating the use of very high currents of low voltage. The alumina from which metallic aluminum is gained must be chemically pure, otherwise impure metal results. The main drawbacks of the electrolytic production are its very high energy consumption, the release ofperfluorocarbons, and the high specific C02 emissions [1]. During the past years, there were a lot of attempts to produce metallic aluminum by carbothermic reduction of A1203 [2, 3]. Cox [4] determined the vapor pressure over the A1203-C system and performed X-ray diffraction analysis of condensed products. It was demonstrated that an increase in the carbon content in the system leaded to the sequence of transitions: A1203~Al404C~A1zoc~A14C3 ~AI [5]. In any carbothermic reduction process for aluminum, extremely high temperatures (2000 °C ) were required [6]. In spite of considerable effort, the carbothermic reduction of alumina to aluminum remains a formidable technical challenge, due to the high temperatures required, and to the formation of aluminum carbide and oxycarbide byproducts [7]."

From the inception of zinc retorting on a commercial scale in the United States in 1890,' the retort employed has undergone wide variations in its composition and manufacture, facilitating in part equally remarkable improvements in furnace capacities. The early day hand made clay retort was charged with carbonates or silicates or with coarse dead roasted concentrates mixed with a large proportion of charge fuel resulting in a relatively low zinc burden and fired 24 hr in direct coal fired furnaces. Its modern counterpart is fabricated in hydraulic presses from clay mixtures containing sizeable amounts of either silicon carbide or silica flour, charged with sintered flotation concentrates to more than three times the early day zinc burden and fired 24 to 48 hr in gas fired furnaces. This paper does not attempt to describe in detail the early day clay retort practice as it is well outlined in treatises by Ingalls,2 Lodin,3 Liehig,4 Hofman5 and others. A brief review of clay retort practice is presented together with a description of the major developments since 1912. Clay Retorts The Belgian type retort, both in the circular and elliptical forms, has been used almost exclusively. Typical dimensions of press made clay retorts around 1910 are shown in Table 1. Variations in these dimensions were used at different plants according to local conditions to a maximum inside diameter of 9 in. and inside length of 54 in. However, the effective heat penetration in a 24 hr firing cycle and the tendency of the retort to bend limited the retort size. Use of the elliptical vessel was an attempt to present a stronger cross-section resisting the tendency to bend and to increase the burden without increasing the depth of heat penetration. One exception to the 48-54 in. length was the 60 in. retort used as early as 1905 at Palmerton by means of supporting the last 12 in. at the butt end with a specially designed furnace back-wall. This backwall construction with the 60 in. retort had been developed and used at Bethlehem by G. G. Con-vers and A. B. DeSaulles. An attempt was made at Blende, Colo. to use even larger retorts of the Rhenish type based on European practice and requiring much higher furnace temperatures. Satisfactory plastic clays capable of withstanding these temperatures were not available, and the plant never operated successfully. PREPARATION OF BATCH Composition of the clay retort by weight was 40 to 50 pct raw clay and the balance "grog." Generally speaking the mix consisted of 7 parts plastic clay to 9 parts grog by volume. Principal source of the clay used was the Cheltenham vein—sometimes referred to as "St. Louis city clay." A typical analysis was A12O3-31.0 pct, SiO2-50.0 pct, Fe2O3-2.5 pct, MgO-0.3 pct, CaO-1.5 pct and loss on ignition 14.0 pct. At the smelter the clay was weathered whenever possible and then crushed to 0.08 in. or finer. Grog consisted of calcined adobies, cleaned retort scrap and cleaned refuse fire brick such as old furnace brick, blast furnace linings, and others. Saggers from ceramic plants and calcined flint clay were later used. The grog materials were ground to 0.12 m. or finer. Occasionally coke dust up to 10 pct of the mix was substituted for a part of the grog following European practice.² Particle size of the grog has a major influence on the retort properties—the larger the grain, the better can the retort withstand thermal shocks, resist bending at furnace temperatures and resist corrosion from slag; the smaller the grain, the lower the loss of zinc vapor through the retort walls. Grog forms the skeleton of the retort, and the clay shrinks around its grains to act as a binder. In the drying process, the grog has a stabilizing effect on the drying rate, decreasing shrinkage and giving up previously absorbed water to the surrounding clay to minimize the danger of cracking or checking.² Grog and clay were mixed through a horizontal pug mill with 10 to 20 pct water added, depending on whether the retort was to be formed by hand or mechanically, more water being required for the hand process. The batch or "mud" extruded from the pug mill was cut in convenient lengths for handling, stacked in piles or in special rooms, covered with wet burlap and allowed to "rot" or age from 1 to 8 weeks to increase plasticity. HAND MOLDING If the retort was to be molded by hand, the mud was repugged after the rotting period and given to the molders. Their molds consisted of 3 sheet iron or wood cylinders, each one third the retort length and defining the outer shape of the retort. To properly analyze and apply mining equipment, a systematic, current, inclusive, and simple classification scheme is required. This paper provides such a classification for Roadheaders. This Roadheader classification is based on factors, such as the rock cutterhead, the boom type, and the chassis configuration. It first assigns Roadheaders as an equipment type within the larger group of Integrated Excavators. The Roadheader type is then delineated into the following subtypes: the standard, the extended boom, the tunnelers, and the miscellaneous. Next, these subtypes are devolved into kinds, and finally variants and attachments are considered. To resolve inconsistencies in characterizing the Roadheader, cross-referencing is employed within the classification scheme.

Slate possesses many admirable qualities, not only as a roofing material, but for blackboards, electrical switch boards, and for various structural uses such as stair trends, floor tile, baseboards, and sanitary enclosures. The American slate industry was established manor years ago, and has made remarkable progress, particularly during the past five years. One of the chief drawbacks to more rapid expansion is the high percentage of waste which reaches 75 to 94 per cent of gross production. Much of this waste is duo to rock imperfections over which man has no control, but a careful study of tae industry by the Bureau of Mines over a period of years indicates that an undesirably large percentage of the marketable slate is wasted in the processes of quarrying and manufacture. The initial step in quarrying slate is to separate from the solid ledge masses of a size that ray be conveniently removed from the quarry. This first step entails a greater waste of material than any subsequent process, and, therefore, invites the most earnest effort toward waste reduction. Attention has consequently been directed toward possible improvements in methods of making primary cuts in the quarry floor. A study of European practice with the wire saw, together with theoretical consideration of its advantages, convinced the writer that it possessed sufficient merit to justify its use as a primary slate cutter in American quarries. No practical conclusion in this matter could be reached except by experiment. Therefore, the desirability of obtaining equipment and trying it out under actual conditions of operation was urged upon operators. While no doubt the equipment could be readily manufactured in America, it had already been developed to the point of practical use in Europe; therefore the writer urged the desirability of purchasing one completely equipped wire saw in Europe, and determining through tests whether it gave sufficient promise of success to warrant its manufacture in America.

The Bureau of Mins, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating a hydrometallurgical procedure to conserve cobalt, nickel, and copper by recovering the metals from the matte byproducts of smelting Missouri lead ores. For want of adequate processing technology the mattes are now either unmarketable or marginally so. The procedure involves leaching with manganese dioxide and sulfuric acid to obtain copper, nickel, cobalt, lead, and manganese sulfates, and elemental sulfur as expressed by the following reaction: MS + MnO2 + 2H2SO4 ? MSO4 + MnS04 + S° + 2H2O, where M = Cu, Ni, Co, and Pb. The leach solutions, containing near theoretical amounts of sulfuric acid and manganese dioxide at 85° to 100° C, convert up to 98 pct of the cobalt, nickel, and copper in the mattes to sulfates in less than 2 hr. As they are formed, the cobalt, nickel, and copper sulfates are dissolved leaving a residue of lead sulfate, lead, sulfur, and gangue. The soluble metals are recovered from the leach solutions by caustic and sulfide precipitation, and the residue returned to the smelter for lead recovery. The manganese can be reclaimed from the spent leach liquor as manganese oxide and recycled to leaching.

Straw charcoal was used as a novel reductant in the co-reduction roasting of laterite ore and red mud. The influence of the reductant dosages, co-reduction temperature, and co-reduction time were investigated. Results showed that a powdered ferronickel product of 1.81wt.% nickel and 81.40wt.% iron was obtained under straw charcoal dosage of 15wt.% and roasted at 1250 °C for 80 min. The corresponding recovery of nickel and total iron were 97.21wt.% and 98.87wt.%, respectively. The performance of straw charcoal was also compared to that by the conventional coke reductant. Results showed that ferronickel particles using straw charcoal were larger in size than coke, mainly due to the lower S (0.14wt.%) and ash content (3.80wt.%), which could not hinder the agglomeration of the ferronickel grains, and lower melting point that producing liquid phase and promoting ferronickel particles growth. In addition, the gasification reactivity of straw charcoal is better than that of coke, which is beneficial to the iron oxide reduction and the recovery of iron. To conclude, straw charcoal is a promising reductant for the co-reduction of laterite ore and red mud in coal-deficient areas.

Chile is responsible for 30% of the global copper production; the world ́s largest. However, significant challenges are faced in this industry; declining grades (1.13% in 2002 to 0.61% in 2015), high cost of energy, scarcity of water, and environmental concerns. Mining trends suggest the future of the industry will be focused in the underground space, specifically due to the depletion of economically viable surface mineral deposits. For example, the largest block cave mineat Codelco ́s Chuquicamata mine is expected to reduce energy costs by 50% and dust emissions by 97%compared to the open cut mine. To access these underground deposits, critical infrastructure is required; horizontal tunnel developments, extraction levels, vertical raises, and ore passes with the on-time delivery of the highest quality outcomes being a requisite for successful project delivery (Lift 1 of 3 at Chuquicamata Underground has over 1000drawbells).One aspect that makes this scenario even more challenging for deeper underground operations is the increased risk profile (people, equipment, and geotechnical) that forms part of the general environment. Furthermore geotechnical risks should be considered and they include rock burst and windblast. The safe interaction with this environment must be sustainable throughout the full life of the project. This paper presents the Enaex group approach to addressing the blasting challenges and outlines the solutions created. Aspects such as rock mass damage occurrence as a function of blast vibration frequency content has been studied, as well as the development of blasting methodologies for guaranteeing the full 100% extraction of all infrastructure blasts, including the all-important draw bell volumes. The development of such infrastructure volumes in one single event using electronic detonators and the associated achievement of ambitious productivity goals, are described as a critical part of the successful construction of one of the most ambitious UG projects currently present on the world.

An experimental study of the soil mechanics of brown coal showed that brown coal consolidates in the same manner as does a clay and that the theory of consolidation for soils may be applied to brown coals. Moisture content is a function of the coal type, the existing effective stress, and the stress history of the coal.The effective stress in a brown coal seam is a function of the overburden pressure, the pore stress and tectonic stresses. Stress history may be deduced from geological evidence and determined by consolidation tests. Application of these principles to the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley shows that the distributions of natural moisture contents are consistent with consolidation.INTRODUCTIONThe nature and geology of the brown coals of Victoria, particularly of the Latrobe Valley, were discussed in some detail by Edwards (1945, 1948), Thomas and Baragwanath (1949) and Gloe (1960). A salient feature of these studies was the distribution of moisture contents in the brown coal seams. Recent experimental work, part of a soil mechanics study of the structure and strength of brown coal, showed that moisture content variation is a reflection of consolidation phenomena in brown coal and application of the results to .field condItions verified and modified the conclusions of Edwards in his pioneer work. 1. From the standpoint of present production and recoverable reserves, there are two beds of major importance in Allegheny County -Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport -and one of lesser importance -Redstone. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 832 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 768 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in some beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

ABSTRACT The correlations between froth recovery of coal and air recovery were investigated using a hybrid mechanical flotation column. The particle slurry was fed onto the surface of air-water two phase froths to carry out the tests. Froth recovery was taken as the recovery of particles into the froth product, whereas air recovery was determined by the froth height method. The relationships between froth recovery and air recovery were nearly linear, with greater slopes for more hydrophobic particles. Inside the froth phase, the particles were stratified, with hydrophobic particles concentrated in the upper region and hydrophilic particles in the lower region.

Vertical ring and Pulsating Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (VP-WHIMS) is widely used for week magnetic mineral beneficiation or ferrous impurity removal from non-metallic minerals. Because of the complexity of this machine, mathematical modelling of its process is complicated and time consuming. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) and response surface methodology (RSM) were applied to evaluate the VP-WHIMS performance and optimize its main operating parameters in beneficiating of the Chadormalu hematite sample. The operational parameters of this magnetic separator are considered as: magnetic field intensity (2500-8500 gauss), pulsating frequency (20-100 %max), ring rotation speed (0.6-4.6 r/min) and slurry concentration (15-35 w/w %). Concentrate grade and recoveries (weight and Fe) are monitored as responses. Centre composite design (CCD) was used for experimental study. Four process variables were set using small CCD. Eight star points (a=±1), eight axial points (a=±2) and five replicates at the centre point (a=0) were chosen as experimental points. In ANN system, the best network topology was obtained as (4-5-3). Metallic magnesium is mostly used in lightweight alloys in order to decrease fuel consumption in automotive applications. Several different production processes are currently used worldwide, and the magnesium production scenario is changing rapidly, with Chinese production increasingly dominating the world market. For the purpose of this paper, a novel approach to Life Cycle Assessment was applied, in which Material Flow Accounting and energy-based methods (Embodied Energy, Exergy and Emergy Analyses) are integrated and complemented, with a detailed description of the environmental hazards associated with emissions from all the different processes.
