Equilibrium in the reaction was investigated at temperatures of 1500°, 1550°, and 1600°C for sulfur concentrations up to 7.2 wt pct. Multisample crucibles contained the liquid alloys in a resistance-heated furnace using a technique especially designed for the study of more complex alloys to be reported separately. Modern free-energy data are used to correct the H2S:H2 ratio for dissociation of H2S and calculalion of the partial pressure of S2. Published data on the equilibrium are similarly corrected. Thermodynanzic treatment of the data employs the composition variable zs = nS/(nFe — nS) and the activity coefficient Gs = as/zs The data at 1500" and 1550°C are fitted by the equation log s = —2.30zs. Within the limits of experimental error the same coefficient is applicable to the data at higher temperatures. Equations are given for the free-energy change in Reaction [I] as well as for the solution of S, gas in the metal. The heat of solution of 1/2 s2 is -32.28 i2.5 kcal. Uncertainty in the free energy is very much smaller. For dilute solutions of interest in steelmaking, the activity coefficient of sulfur is unchanged from that listed in Basic Open Hearth Steel-making. DETERMINATIONS of the thermodynamic properties of sulfur in liquid iron by Morris and williams1 and by Sherman, Elvander, and chipman' provided a basis for control of sulfur in steelmaking processes. From the standpoint of understanding the chemistry of metal plus nonmetal in liquid solution they left several questions unanswered. The activity of sulfur in dilute solution at about 1600°C was well-established but temperature coefficients were uncertain, due at least in part to the use of the optical pyrometer and uncertainty regarding the effect of sulfur on emissivity. It appeared that deviation from Henry's law increased with increasing temperature, a most unusual behavior requiring either confirmation or disproof. These studies were based on experimental determination of equilibrium in the reaction: At high temperatures H2S is partially dissociated so that the gas mixture contains HS, S2, and S in addition to HS. At the time of the earlier studies the free energies of these constituents were unknown and it was therefore impossible to make adequate correction for dissociation. Observations on the effects of alloying elements by Morris and coworkers1, 3 and by Sherman and Chip-man4 enable us to assess the effects of alloying elements on the activity and to make corrections for incidental impurities in the binary liquid. These studies as well as a number of more recent investigations will be reviewed in detail after out own experimental results have been presented. It was our purpose in planning this study to avoid uncertainties regarding the emissivity of alloys and the errors of thermal diffusion which plagued some of the early attempts,5 by using a resistance furnace and thermocouple in preference to induction heating and optical pyrometer. Modern data on free energies of the gaseous species are to be applied to our data and to those of other investigators to obtain corrected values of K1 and of the activity coefficient and ultimately to relate the sulfur content of the bath to the equilibrium partial pressure of S,. Extension of the study to include ternary and complex solutions will be described in a later section. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD a) Preparation and Calibration of H2-H2s Gas Mixture. The source of hydrogen sulfide was a preparer mixture of 43 pct H2S, balance hydrogen, contained in a large aluminum cylinder. This was passed through anhydrone and through a microflowmeter. Hydrogen was passed through platinized asbestos, ascar-ite, and anhydrone, and through a capillary flowmeter. Argon was passed through copper wool at 500°C, then through ascarite, anhydrone, and a flowmeter. The flow rate of hydrogen was kept constant at 200 ml per min, to which an arbitrary amount of the hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide mixture was constantly added and then the prepared gas mixture was introduced into the reaction tube through a gas mixer. In certain experiments 200 ml per min of argon was added to the hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide gas mixture to increase the total flow rate of gas. The ratio of hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide in the inlet gas was checked for each run by chemical analysis. A sample of the gas taken from a bypass was bubbled through zinc and cadmium acetate solution (4 pct zinc acetate, 1 pct cadmium acetate, and 1 pct acetic acid) to remove hydrogen sulfide from the gas mixture, and the flow rate of the remaining hydrogen was measured by a soap bubble method to determine the volume of hydrogen. The amount of hydrogen sulfide absorbed in solution was determined by titration with iodine against sodium thiosulfate, with starch used as the indicator. The ratio of hydrogen sulfide to hydrogen in the inlet gas could be kept within ±2 pct in the range from 10-2 to 5 x 10"4 which corresponds to from 0.2 to 7.0 wt pct sulfur in liquid iron. b) Furnace Arrangement. To filly secure the environmental and social acceptability benefits of making a sulphide smelting facility and its ancillary sulphuric acid plant or other means for fixing sulphur, a virtually zero gas emission operation, it will be necessary to utilise exclusively technically pure oxygen. The strategy proposed for preventing the smelter from overheating involves highly efficient energy transfer by promoting sulphur trioxide formation at a relatively higher temperature than normal. A closed-loop gas circuit uses an eductor system actuated by the process oxygen to recirculate sulphur trioxide and unconverted sulphur dioxide back to the smelter, the endothermic dissociation of sulphur trioxide becoming a major contributor to the removal of excess heat. The only gases leaving the system relate to the bleed of nitrogen impurity introduced in the tonnage oxygen.

In this study, a combined pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical technique has been designed and used to recover rare earth mixture elements (REE) and cobalt from a NdFeB magnetic waste. while addressing the cost of reagent and process facility. This process can be adjusted to different magnetic wastes regardless of their compositions. Prior to the leaching, the magnet scrap was pretreated by two rounds of roasting (750°C in air) and a mechanical grinding in between, to convert iron metal to ferric oxide. Subsequent leaching was performed using optimized conditions (pH, temperature and retention time) where the extraction ratio of REE to Fe III is the highest. After removing iron content from the leachate (pH ≈ 3), REE was precipitated selectively and purified further. The produced REE concentrate reaches 99% purity with 85% recovery in a single run. The cobalt oxide was isolated from the PLS as a by-product with 99.8% purity.

One-third of all the new tin mined and refined is consumed in making tin plate. Several billions of cans are each year made from tin plate for the preservation of nearly 200 kinds of food. There are more than 500 tin-plate mills or individual stacks in the United States, which country makes more tin plate than all other countries combined and exports large quantities. As much as 1,800,000 tons of till plate has been made in a year in this country, and 28.000 tons of tin has been used in this period for this purpose. In sonic years a third of the till is so consumed; in 1933 it was half of the supply.

"In a preliminary report made a year ago it was shown that certain minerals when subjected to heating with water under high pressure and temperature were shattered upon the sudden release of that pressure. The main feature in which the results of this method differ from those of conventional grinding is in the differential effect obtained. The more metallic minerals, and hence the valuable minerals, are shattered more readily than are the gangue minerals. In other words, explosive shattering is unique among possible methods for comminuting an ore in that it wastes the least energy on the useless part of the ore. Explosive shattering, therefore, offers possibilities as a means for reducing grinding costs, arid it is this potential advantage of the process that makes it worthy of further experimental study. The first part of this paper is devoted to a study of the mechanism of the process; the, second part reports results obtained in toots on a selected list of ores to exhibit some of the advantages of explosive shattering."

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has conducted studies both in coal and noncoal mines to evaluate methods for sampling and separating diesel particulates from mineral dust aerosols. The agency is investigating size separation techniques to distinguish between diesel particulate and respirable coal mine dust. Additionally, ashing techniques have been used to distinguish diesel particulate from mineral dust in metal and nonmetal mines. As part of these studies, personal exposures to diesel particulate for various mining occupations have been measured. This paper describes the measurement techniques and summarizes the exposure levels for various underground mining operations.

The Ventilation Branch is engaged in a project to determine if low level carbon monoxide monitors used for early detection and warning of fire in a coal mine conveyor belt entry can provide protection equivalent to that of thermally actuated point type heat sensors commonly used for fire detection. A series of tests were conducted to determine the required operating parameters, such as sensor spacing and alarm levels of detected carbon monoxide to provide equivalency between' these methods of fire detection. This report summarizes the results of these tests.

THE Brüclrner roasting-cylinder is well known as an apparatus which has done good work in the desulphnrization, particularly of refractory silver ores, in the western districts of this country. A paper by Mr. J. M. Locke, of Cincinnati, describing the cylinders, as constructed by Messrs. Lane & Bodley, in that city, may be found at p. 295, vol. ii., of the Transactions of the Institute; and a paper by Mr. N. H. Cone, vol. iv., p. 226, gives an account of their operation in Colorado. The purpose of the present paper is to present an .improved construction, designed by Mr. Brückner. This is clearly shown in the accompanying plate, which scarcely needs explanation. It will be seen at once that this construction involves two cylinders, instead of one. Mr. Brückner thinks that three cylinders might be better yet, as securing an exact mechanical reproduction of the work of the well-known three-hearth Fortschaufelungsofen, the most perfect of the reverberatories in which delicate roasting is performed with hand-labor. THE APPARATUS. Erection of the Cylinders.—Although the cylinders may he put lip at any locality, or added to existing works, it is preferable, if possible, to choose the site on a hill sloping naturally, say about 30' or 33. Two excavations are made, one 8 to 12 feet higher up than the other; and each is protected by a wall with a batter of about 1 inch to the foot, to prevent slides of stone and earth. Each cylinder being 20 feet long and 7 feet in diameter, the total excavation should be 60 to 70 feet along the hill, and 15 to 25 feet wide. On each level a building is erected 35 feet long by 20 feet wide and 12 feet high, with the roof containing a ventilator against the hill. When both buildings are on the same level, there should preferably be a solid frame-work of very heavy timber, to carry the four rollers which bear the upper cylinder. The four rollers carrying the lower cylinder should preferably rest on two very heavy pieces of timber, strongly braced together and laid to their top in a foundation made of stone or brick and cement. Foundations are necessary only under each two opposite rollers, but they must be made carefully,

Keywords: Bi-directional tests, Osterberg cell, O-cell®, static load tests, Timeset® Static load testing, where loads are applied vertically to the top of the pile and often referred to as 'top down testing', has been used for many years and has become a 'standard' test for the world of foundation engineering. The method, although well developed, cannot be used under certain circumstances, magnitude of load being a particular issue. There is a finite limit to the load capacity that can be applied with either kentledge, the use of reaction piles or anchors, and as the loads increase, the costs escalate dramatically. A novel test method seeks to overcome all the associated problems of large scale and restrictive area "top down testing", utilising static load testing techniques. The method requires the foundation element to be divided into two or more sections and these can be loaded axially as required using a portion of the foundation element as a reaction. This paper presents some recent applications and developments in the use and application of the bi-directional testing technique using the Osterberg Cell or O-cell® and outlines some of the many advantages of the system. Recent bi-directional test loads applied to bored piles have mobilised capacities of 279 MN and with flight auger piles up to 25 MN.

"This paper presents results from the proposed cyanide detoxification circuit for Seabridge Gold’s KSM project. The proposed flowsheet uses a two-stage CCD (counter-current washing/decantation) circuit to transfer the flotation products CIL(carbon-in-leach) barren solution to a SART process (Sulphidization, Acidification, Recycling of precipitate, and Thickening of precipitate) to recover copper and free cyanide from the copper cyanide complex. The SART barren solution is then treated by an AVR process (Acidification, Volatilization of HCN gas, and Reneutralization) to concentrate the cyanide that was liberated in SART for recycling to leach. The washed CIL barren pulp (the CCD underflow) is treated with the SO2 /Air process to oxidize residual cyanide.The goal of this complex flowsheet is to recover and recycle as much cyanide as possible and produce a final effluent containing less than 0.5 mg/L copper and CNWAD at the lowest cost. The SO2/air process is capable of achieving low residual CNWAD (<1 mg/L) in the final product, but the persistence of aqueous copper above the target level has been detected in the treated solution in some instances. The expected high concentrations of copper and cyanide in the KSM CIL barren ( >200 mg/L each species) and the difficulties this might create for the SO2 /air process was a key factor in the decision to consider including the washing, SART and AVR steps in the project flowsheet.The target concentrations of CNWAD and Cu were readily achieved after aging the SO2 /air treated pulp, as would occur in a tailing or polishing pond. This suggests no additional treatment will be required to sustain low levels of these species in the final plant effluent."

By implementing various mining practices, mine operators can reduce the respirable dust exposure levels of the roof bolter and the continuous miner operators. The Bureau of Mines has developed a computer program, entitled AMP (Alternative Mining Practices), that gives a quantitative comparison of these reductions. The alternative mining practices and their corresponding reductions in dust exposure levels that are evaluated by the program include a remote control continuous miner, a half-curtain ventilation system, two auxiliary fan-tubing bypass ventilation systems, a modified cutting sequence, a comparison between single-split and double-split ventilation networks, and a comparison between exhausting brattice and exhausting tubing. Descriptions of each of these mining practices are included in the report. The report also includes a hypothetical case study to show how AMP enables mine operators to select the technique(s) that is best suited to their particular needs. AMP is a compiled basic program that has been designed to run on computers with a DOS version 2.0 or later operating system. It includes high resolution graphics (640 X 200 dot positions) designed to run with video boards that are functionally compatible with the IBM Monochrome/ Printer Adapter. Graphic screens are selected from menus, and can be bypassed if the computer is not equipped to handle high resolution mode. Their primary function is to show proper implementation of the mining practices evaluated by the program. This package requires a minimum of 256K bytes of RAM. The Indian Head fine has been in existence since 1922. For over 56 years there have been North Dakota people mining coal at this same location. The area affected will fit inside a circle 5 km in diameter, and the coal is lignite. The seam thickness has varied from 2.4 m to 3.65m, and the overburden from 6 m to 30 m in depth. me Lignite coal which is being mined at the Indian Head Mine is from 15.8 x l0 6 to 16.7 x 10 6 J per kg; it has a moisture content of 33 to 38%; an ash content of 5 to 10%; and a sulfur content of from 0.5 to 0.7%. The moisture content and the fact that we crush the coal co a top size of 14 cm x 0, are two of the characteristics or the product which cause it to freeze and remain inside of the railroad cars on the slope sheets. The market for the coal initially was almost entirely local coal sales. That is, coal was sold to people in the area who used the lignite to heat their homes, stores, offices, schools, and churches. Back in the early 1920&apos;s, there were no stoker-fed boilers, or pulverized fuel boilers, as we have in today?s marketplace. Basically, all of the coal was sold as lump coal, pieces about 30 to 35 cm square, to be used in furnaces: and nut coal with a top size of about 7.5 cm to 10 cm to be used in the old kitchen cookstove. All of the coal fines, less than 5 cm, were screened out and layed onto a pile. There was no market for the smaller sizes of the lignite coal. It has been our experience that when the coal is in lumps or chunks larger than 7.5 cm to 10 cm, there is a very slight possibility of freezing. That is the chunks themselves freeze, but by their nature, they do not cling to one another or form large masses of frozen material which are difficult to remove from the slope sheers of the railroad cars.

"The distortion of metal parts during heat treatment process is one of the main obstacles in industry to ensure high-quality work and less or no machining allowance, especially for large but thin steel castings such as heavy turbine blades. In the paper, a method is proposed to control the distortion by adjusting heat transfer coefficient of metal parts during heat treatment process. Required heat transfer coefficients can be realized by getting the metal parts into contact with various media such as water spray, insulation felt or materials with different heat conductivity. The control method based on this idea is set up and achieved. By using insulation felt and water spray to change the heat transfer coefficient during the stages of heat treatment process, the results indicate that the proper control time and vary with materials.IntroductionThe distortion of metal parts during heat treatment process is one of the main obstacles in industry to ensure high-quality work and to realize less or no machining allowance [1]. For example, the Three Gorges turbine blade’s distortion is as large as 50mm during heat treatment process. The uneven heating and cooling during heat treatment process is the main reason for distortion [2]. By adjusting heat transfer coefficient of different areas of metal parts, the heat treatment process could be controlled. The temperature variation, direct cause for distortion, could be under control. Loeser Klaus used high pressure gas to achieve uniform heat transfer during gas quenching and proposed the possibility to use ""Dynamic Quenching"" processes where the quenching severity is varied during quenching by stepwise control of either gas velocity or gas pressure [3]. Li Zhichao also suggested minimizing distortion by marking a component into several areas and imposing different heat transfer coefficients on each area [4]. Heat transfer coefficient can be controlled by getting the metal parts into contact with different media such as water spray, insulation felt, air or different heat conduction materials. In addition, the exact time to adjust the heat transfer coefficient is another factor for distortion. A method is presented in this paper by actively adjusting heat transfer coefficient for different areas of metal parts and different stages of heat treatment process to control their distortion. The corresponding experiments have been made by using different metal materials."

"Chromite concentrate after beneficiation can not be directly used in the electric furnace. Therefore sintering is one of the effective way to agglomeration, by which the chromite concentrate can be utilized and the power cost of ferrochrome smelting can be reduced. The properties of raw materials and the sintering process of chromite concentrate were studied in this work. The results showed that chromite concentrate used can hardly granulated alone, while chlorite addition can improve the effect of granulation. Moisture plays an important role in sintering process. The granulation effect is optimal when the amount of water addition is 12%. Strength and abrasion index are the evaluation indexes of sinter quality. It was found that the strength of sinter increased with coke dosage increasing to 12%, and then decreased when it continuously increased. Opposite regularities were found for the abrasion index of the sinter.1 IntroductionChromium is a very important metal element which is mostly used in the production of stainless steel. In the earth, it is always formed compound with iron as ferrochromium spinel (FeO.Cr203), and its mineralogical name is chromite.[1] Currently, the global production of chrome ore is about 20 million tonnage every year , in which fine ore (less than 8 mm) accounted for about 80% [2] Although the price of the fine ore is cheaper than the lump one, too much fines will lead to the poor permeability and causes increased electricity consumption while producing ferrochrome. Therefore, the agglomeration process of chrome ore is one of the effective measures to increase the usage ratio of fine ore."

When hypo-peritectic carbon steel is quenched during unidirectional solidification, the region of fine columnar grain is observed. It is classified into two coexisting phases. One is coexisting phases of liquid, delta and gamma in the upper part of the region, and the other is coexisting phases of delta and gamma in the lower part of the region. To form the coexisting part of the three phases means that solidification in this experiment proceeds in non-equilibrium state. The size of the narrow side of one fine columnar grain coincides with the arm spacing of a primary dendrite and this result is the same as the hyper-peritectic carbon steel. However, the boundary of the fine grain in the hypo-peritectic carbon steel is formed in different location from that of the hyper-peritectic carbon steel. The former is formed in the skeleton of the dendrite, while the latter is formed in the interspacing of the dendrite. The region of the fine grain changes suddenly to that of the coarse grain when the delta phase in the coexisting part of two phases disappears completely. Therefore, the delta phase in the hypo-peritectic carbon steel might prevent the growth of gamma grain. In order to recognize it, ferrite formers such as Mo, V and Ni are added in the sample. Then, the longitudinal length of the fine columnar grain extends in the sequence of the no addition, Mo, V and Nb.

To determine the characteristics of a mineral deposit, the usual practice is to take samples, analyse the properties of those samples and infer the characteristics of the deposit from these properties. This analysis can be done using statistical methods. In the present work we are concerned with two types of statistical approaches, classical statistics and spatial statistics. If one uses classical statistics to represent the properties of the sample values, the assumption is made that the values are realizations of a random variable. The relative positions of the samples are ignored, and it is assumed that all sample values in the mineral deposit have an equal probability of being selected. The likely presence of trends, zones of enrichment, or pay shoots in the mineralization, is ignored. The fact that two samples taken close to each other are more likely to have similar values than if taken far apart is also not taken into consideration. In contrast, spatial statistics will be used if one chooses to consider that the sample values are realizations of random functions. On this hypothesis, the value of a sample is a function of its position in the mineralization of the deposit, and the relative position of the samples is taken into consideration. The similarity between sample values is quantified as a function of the distance between samples and this relationship represents the foundation of spatial statistics. There are few situations where classical statistics can be used. The assumption that all sample values in the mineral deposit have an equal likelihood of being represented will be satisfied only if the sample values are randomly distributed, or if the sample positions are random. Sample values are in fact never randomly distributed within a mineral deposit. Further- more, geologists usually avoid taking samples at random (random sampling), as it is correctly accepted that samples located on a regular grid, or approximately on a regular grid, give more information than randomly located samples. In practice, classical statistics should be used only in the early stages of exploration, when the number of samples available is relatively small and the distances between samples are large. In these circumstances, and whenever the information available is not sufficient to permit the use of spatial statistics, application of the methods described in this chapter is justified.

QUARTZ of a certain kind, is one of our strategic minerals, and Brazil is probably the one important available source. Crystals of quartz of suitable size and perfection for piezoelectrical application are rare; their most outstanding use is in radio work. Clear quartz, or "crystal," free from twinning, cracks, foreign particles of other disturbing lines of growth, and gaseous or liquid inclusions, is cut into plates which provide excellent control of frequency in broadcasting. The squares or rectangles are less than a millimeter in thickness and ordinarily on the order of 1 in. along each side. They are cut at definite angles with respect to the axes of the crystal, and ground with opposite surfaces parallel. Each small slab must be a section of one crystal, uniform throughout in atomic alignment. The thickness of the chip controls the frequency of a broadcast and it is most important to have the plates oriented and ground with utmost precision. Opposite surfaces are parallel to within 0.001 mm. and expansion or contraction due to the temperature is limited to one part in a million.

Gold losses must be controlled during extracting processes, especially during cyanidation. Otherwise recovery decreases and therefore the profitability of projects too. One of the phenomena that generate such losses is known as preg-robbing which occurs when some mineral constituent adsorbs aurocyanide complex from a cyanide solution. There are some laboratory methods to identify potential preg-robbing in gold ores, highlighting the PRP method, the BGMI test, and cyanidation tests by conventional agitation without activated carbon (BRP) and with activated carbon (CIL). For this study we performed an initial characterization of a sample from Antioquia - Colombia and then we carried out the methods described above in order to identify the presence of carbonaceous matter. We obtained a percentage of preg-robbing of 78.7% by applying the BGMI test; the preg-robbing potential by the PRP method was 97.9% with an extraction of 0.77% and an inferred recovery of 36.6% if preg-robbing did not occur. Finally we obtained under the BRT test a recovery of 0%, while for CIL test an extraction of 33.6% what confirmed the presence of preg-robbers agents in the gold ore. We conducted all tests in the Institute of Minerals - CIMEX at Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Medellin.
