Three water-spray ventilation systems were tested to determine their effectiveness in diluting methane at a room and pillar coal mine face. These systems were: the shrouded nozzle, the spray fan, and the conventional nozzle system that is normally supplied with continuous miners. The testing was carried out in two stages. The air-moving capacities of the nozzles were first evaluated in a duct. The duct tests showed that: (1) the volume of air moved by the nozzle is controlled by the type of nozzle, the space around it, and its location relative to the duct wall; (2) the spray fan nozzles or the shrouded nozzles are both capable of moving air quantities up to 6400 cfm (3.02 m3/s); and (3) when the shroud was removed from around the shrouded nozzle, its bare nozzle moved between 9 and 65 percent more air. In the second stage of testing, a full-scale evaluation of the three systems was conducted. The three spray systems were mounted on a continuous miner which was positioned in an aboveground simulated mine entry. The simulated face tests gave the following results: (1) the standard nozzle system, which is mounted on the front end of the miner, is inadequate for diluting methane; (2) under the best testing conditions (lowest methane emission rate, highest primary ventilation airflow, and closest brattice set back), the slight improvement given by either the shrouded system or the spray fan is the same; and (3) under the worst testing conditions (highest methane emission rate, least primary ventilation airflow, and farthest brattice set back), the spray fan gave superior performance.

World demand for phosphate rock has increased significantly in the past fifteen years. Prior to the early 1960's, most of the world production was obtained from Florida, North Africa, and Kola. As the 1960's arrived, new mines in North Florida and Eastern North Carolina, as well as expanded production in the Western United States, .increased domestic production. Many new mines overseas have also become significant. This includes countries such as Senegal, Togo, Israel, Spanish Sahara, and Jordan. Limited production, often as by-products, has been noted in South Africa, Brazil, and other countries. In recent years, and even recent months, we have learned of many new areas being considered as potential sources of phosphate rock. This includes Australia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. Many other developing countries have discoveries and are considering their new deposits, often with difficult beneficiation problems, as potential sources of phosphate. These factors all relate to expanded world, population and the demand for more fertilizer products to produce food. In this paper, four areas of the world with different types of phosphate deposits are briefly reviewed to contrast the ore beneficiation problems to Florida procedures--long considered the "standard" of the industry, at least for most of the United States' domestic production. Agrico has three large operating mines in Florida with total production capacity exceeding seven million tons per year. Here, pebble phosphate (+14 mesh material) is produced without the use of flotation, whereas all of the material finer than 14 mesh is subjected to flotation beneficiation to upgrade into high grade concentrates.

Early flotation dealt primarily with the bulk concentration of sulphide minerals or the separation of one sulphide from another and was referred to as oil flotation because oils and fats were used as reagents. The separation or concentration of one nonmetallic mineral from another developed later with the use of fatty acids. Fatty acids are organic acids present usually as glycerides in tall oil and oils of fish, peanut, cottenseed, soya beans and ethers of veg¬etable and animal origin. Some, of these oils and their derivatives were used by the Phoenicians as early as 600 B.C. in making soap, and the use of such reagents in mineral dressing is referred to as "soap flotation". The first use of oleic acid for the recovery of minerals was the early agglomeration process.' The coarse particles of ore, from 1/16 to 1/4 inch diameter, were coated with large amounts of soap or oil and after screaming from the gangue were recovered by screening, hydraulic or table classification. In 1886, a patent was issued to Mrs. Carrie Everson in which the essential feature was the constituted commingling of pulverized ore, fat or an oil, either animal, mineral, or vegetable, for the purpose of effecting .a. union of the free metal or metallic portion of the ore with such admixed material whereby the same may be changed in subsequent separation of quartz or other rock therefrom by washing or other suitable means. The patent mentions the use of red, cotton seed, caster, sperm and linseed oils, In the early use of collectors the amount of oil for froth flotation was often 2 to 6 per cent by weight of the ore rather than pounds per ton.

In the present study the open gradient magnetic separation' (OGMS) method has been used to beneficiate the -30 + 100 mesh fraction of two high volatile bituminous coals. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the magnetic separation for cleaning these coals is the subject of this paper. Coal petrography in combination with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffractometry (XRD) were used to characterize the magnetically separated coal fractions. These analyses revealed that the majority of the pyrite and non-pyrite minerals were concentrated in the positive magnetic susceptibility fractions. The bulk of the starting samples (-80 weight percent) were located in the negative magnetic susceptibility fractions and showed significant reductions in pyrite and non-pyritic minerals. The magnetic separation appears to effectively split the samples into relatively clean coal and refuse.

With the continued deep drilling of today, increasing numbers of high pressure and high temperature gas-condensate reservoirs are being discovered. Correspondingly, the ranges of properties of gas-condensate reservoir fluids are also being increased. The literature1*'." contains several excellent reviews of the property ranges in presently known condensate reservoirs. When one examines these property ranges, it becomes apparent that the need for reliable data is great if the engineer is to evaluate properly or appraise a gas-condensate reservoir. It is the purpose of this paper to present phase-behavior data that will point out some of the important variables that influence recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs produced by pressure depletion. All these variables may be resolved into two major categories: the hydroc:arbon composition of the reservoir fluid and the physical properties of the reservoir. But the variables which we will consider are those which are usually determined from well tests shortly after discovery and are, consequently, readily available to the engineer. They are as follows: (1) the producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio, (2) stock-tank liquid gravity, and (3) reservoir temperature. Laboratory depletion studies have been performed on several reservoir fluids to illustrate the effect of changes in the cronsidered variables upon ultimate recoveries. The deviation factors, Z, of a series of reservoir fluids were determined experimentally to illustrate their order of magnitude and their effect upon the calculation of in-place reserves existing at high pressurcs and temperatures. The procedures followed in conjunction with the performance of these studies and their associated calculations are illustrated in Fig. 1. For the purpose of this paper, the depletion recoveries are expressed only in terms of pcr cent of initial stock-tank liquid, with the abandonment pressure assumed to be 500 psig. VARIATION OF RECOVERY WITH INITIAL PRODUCING SEPARATOR GAS-STOCK-TANK LIQUID RATIO The producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio has long been one of the principal criteria in assumptions and generalized correlations' used for the estimation of ultimate recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs. Fig. 2 presents a plot of the cumulative recovery of stock-tank liquid at abandonment as a function of the initial producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio. The graphical illustration represents the results of 44 laboratory depletion studies performed on actual gas-condensate fluids. These data are presented not only to illustrate the general trend of ultimate recovery increase with initial producing ratio increase but to emphasize the considerable variation in possible recovery at any given producing ratio. Table 1 presents the properties of two actual reservoir fluids chosen to illustrate the approximate extremities of producing ratios for gas-condensate systems. The fluids designated as A and B exhibited initial producing ratios of 3,400 and 114,000 scf/bbl, respectively. Fig. 3 presents a graphical comparison of the cumulative stock-tank liquid recoveries, calculated from the well-stream compositions and produced volumes for each fluid during depletion. It is to be noted that Fluid A exhibited a recovery of only 16.5 per cent when produced to an assumed abandonment pressure of 500 psig while the corresponding recovery for Fluid B was calculated to be 62.2 per cent. RECENT development of high-temperature brazing alloys has required information regarding the eutec-tic temperature and composition of the Pd-rich section of the Pd-B system.. Literature on this subject was found to be scanty with no complete system yet determined. Buddery and welch1 report an inter-metallic compound occurring in the Pd-B system at 6.33 wt pct B (PdsBz). Another source, Sieverts and Bruning,2 indicates that after annealing at 700°C, a 1.6 and a 2.0 wt pct B alloy were two phase whereas a 0.75 pct B alloy was single phase. Recent work3 using a hot-stage microscope has proposed a eutectic temperature of 743OC. This method utilized the observation of the onset of incipient melting at grain boundaries. The eutectic composition, however, was not determined. METHODS AND PR0CEDURES Five alloys were prepared by triple inert arc-melting high-purity palladium (95.98 pct) with additions of 2 to 6 pct purified amorphous boron. The alloys were crushed within a hardened steel mortar with a steel pestle. The 2 pct alloy, however, was too tough to be crushed in the above manner so was crushed by successive reductions through a rolling mill. Approximately 17 to 18 g of the crushed alloy was used in the thermal analysis. The alloys were melted in pure quartz crucibles. The thermocouple protection tubes were also of quartz and fused along the inside wall of crucibles to prevent floating of the thermocouple. This was an expediency as centering of the thermocouple in the melt would have been preferable. Melting was done in a tube furnace with a slow flow of tank helium maintained as a protective atmosphere. Heating and cooling rates were maintained at 3.5OC per min through the critical temperature ranges by means of a synchronous motor hook-up to a furnace controller. All specimens were heated to 100°C over the indicated liquidus on heating prior to reversing to the cooling cycle. Specimens emerged from the furnace with mirrorlike brightness attesting to the protective quality of the helium atmosphere. Thermal arrests were detected by the differential thermocouple technique using chrome l-alumel couples and nickel as the reference specimen. Arrests were recorded on a Leeds-Northrup automatic X-Y recorder. The specimen temperature and temperature difference were read to + 7.5OC and ± 1.5OC, respectively. These readings were well within the sensitivity of the instrument amplifier. Chromel-alumel couples were used in lieu of Pt-Rh as very few arrests were contemplated in excess of 1200" to 1300°C, the approach of instability. No standardization was performed on these thermocouples subsequent to their use. RESULTS The thermal arrest temperatures obtained are plotted in Fig. 1 as a function of wt pct B. The composition function was obtained by chemical analysis of portions of the specimens after the thermal analysis was completed. The 2 to 6 pct nominal alloys were found to have 1.80, 2.35, 3.65, 4.18 and 5.90

WITHIN the past two years, a number of publications have called attention to the double peaks, or stages, that appear in the hardness and strength curves of certain aging alloys. The author has shown the existence of double hardness peaks during the aging of a high-purity silver-copper alloy;' and on the basis of electrical resistance, microscopic, dilation and lattice-parameter measurements, he concluded that the initial hardness peak occurs prior to precipitation while the secondary hardening is due to precipitation. It was suggested that the general mechanism of age-hardening involves two consecutive processes, the first consisting of nucleus or knot' formation, and the second consisting of actual precipitation and particle growth. It was further held that the two stages are interdependent, but because of nonuniform precipitation they may overlap each other to an extent that increases as the aging temperature is raised. At high aging temperatures, the effect of the first stage cannot be detected because of the rapid occurrence of precipitation. . The general theory of age-hardening recently presented by Dr. M. L. V. Gayler3 is in close agreement with the picture outlined above. With reference to work done on duralumin, copper-beryllium and copper-silver alloys, Dr. Gayler also concluded that age-hardening takes place in two consecutive steps: first, diffusion (in which the solute atoms migrate to certain crystallographic planes), and then precipitation. However, W. L. Fink and D. W. Smith4 have shown that the double aging peaks that appear in the strength curves of high-purity aluminum-copper alloys may be explained without recourse to pre-precipitation phenomena. By means of very careful metallographic technique, Fink and Smith demonstrated that during aging the precipitation takes place at an accelerated rate along the grain boundaries and slip planes as a result of the plastic deformation caused by the drastic quench from the solution heat-treatment temperature. † The general precipitation occurs at a

THE problem of segregation and cavities in steel ingots is a subject which has given and is still giving metallurgists, en¬gineers, and operators matter for serious consideration.. This question has come more into prominence lately in the United States, clue largely to the desire of railroad engineers to secure a better rail than they have obtained in the past, as the service they demand is increasing in severity; and no doubt manufacturers will be able to meet what is required of them. The rails here are as good as those made in other countries, but the conditions of service and the extremes of climate are more severe and consequently more breakages occur. Various reasons have been advanced to explain why rails may not be as good in quality to-clay as in the past. Some engineers consider that modern methods of manufacturing, designed chiefly to obtain large output, tend to reduce the standard of excellence of more deliberate methods. Others think that 4-ton ingots are worse than those of 2 tons. Again, it is .stated that the 100-ton heat in one ladle is too large, and is a :step in the wrong direction in casting. My experience upon the question of the size of the ingot is that in rolling rails of from 85-to 100-lb. sections, the range of ingot is only practically such that the difference in the size does not help in the question of segregation, cavities, or blow-holes.

Thin aqueous equilibrium film studies and surface tension measurements on a mixed surfactant system consisting of polyethylene oxide (a model frother) and potassium ethyl xanthate (a model collector) enable the interaction between the two surfactants at the air/solution interface to be elucidated. For the film containing the non-ionic frother, the interface was charged and addition of low concentrations of xanthate acted as a common electrolyte and reduced the thickness of the film inducing rupture. However, at high xanthate collector concentrations, the negative charge xanthate was found to interact with the non-ionic and caused a build-up of negative charge at the air/solution. Higher frother concentrations were necessary to produce non-rupturing thin films upon increasing the xanthate concentration.

Underground fractured aquifers in the Ernest Henry deposit are to a large extent controlled by deposit scale brittle structures. The underground mine has been subdivided into nine water zones based on hydrogeological characteristics, including conductivity and connectivity, within the mining areas bound by these structures. The nine water zones and the hydrological characteristics of the associated structures are utilised for risk assessing mine development and for targeting diamond drilling dewatering activities. Wireline and conventional underground diamond drilling techniques have been used throughout the network of underground aquifers with the aim of dewatering areas within the mining footprint. These dewatering drilling campaigns have historically been highly successful at lowering aquifer water levels throughout the underground workings. As part of recent mine expansion activities, diamond drilling has intersected high pressure (>507 psi), high temperature (>50°C) and high flow water (>3 L/sec) in as yet unconstrained underground aquifers. Groundwater is typically conducted through rubble and clay rich faults, further hampering progression of drilling. Drilling through fractured aquifers at depth presents both mine planning as well as safety challenges. Recent drill holes have been delayed or abandoned when aquifers hosting this high pressure, high flow water have been intersected, risking mine planning deadlines. Recent technological innovation developed to control groundwater outflows from the diamond drill hole whilst drilling has been trialled at the Ernest Henry Mine. This case study focuses on the utilisation of alternative drill methodologies to allow the current drilling campaign to continue without delay, whilst also improving safety conditions encountered on the drill site.

A large number of mineral deposits contain regions in which it is economically beneficial to extract ore both via open pit and underground mining techniques. Current industry practice lacks an effective means to establish the extent of the open pit and underground mining areas for an individual deposit. We present a mixed integer programming model for scheduling both the open pit and underground mine that can be used to create a holistic extraction sequence for a specific deposit. The model considers both spatial and temporal elements of the open pit and underground mines in order to maximise the net present value of the entire deposit, while adhering to its production, processing and block sequencing constraints. By doing so, we can schedule the open pit and underground in concert.CITATION:King, B, 2014. The effects of B content and austenitizing temperature on hardenability and toughness of Cr–Mo alloy steel have been studied. The results show that the hardenability is deteriorated with increasing B content and austenitizing temperature. With increasing temperature, more and more B containing particles were dissolved in austenite and increase the amount of B atoms segregating at grain boundaries. Moreover, the coarsening grains reduce area of grain boundaries and also increase the amount of B atoms at unit grain boundary, excessive B atoms segregating at grain boundaries promotes precipitation of M2B, which accelerates ferrite nucleation and reduces hardenability. The main elements in M2B phase are Fe, Cr, Mo and B. The B atoms segregating at grain boundaries during austenitizing promote precipitation of M2B during tempering which deteriorate toughness significantly.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an improved method for determining dissolved helium in water in the concentration range of 4.0 x 10-8 to 270 X 10-8 cm3 He (STP)/cm3 H2O. The method is a modification of a previously reported method that was developed for analrzing surface and subsurface waters in geochemical survey work. Water samples are collected in SOD-cm stainless steel cylinders, and the dissolved gases in a sample are extracted into an evacuated cylinder of equal volume. After addition of 30 psig of nitrogen containing less than 2 ppb helium to the extracted gases, the resulting mixture is analyzed for helium using a helium-tuned mass spectrometer. The helium content of the water sample is determined from an empirical calibration that is established by analyzing standard solutions of helium in water. The accuracy of the method is ±7 pct for helium-in-water concentrations above 10 x 10-8 cm3 He (STP)/cm3 H2O.

This publication summarizes the in-house and contract research and development projects programed for fiscal year 1981 by the Bureau of Mines under its Minerals Environmental Technology activity. The document provides a mechanism for interested parties, including potential contractors, to gain insight into ongoing and projected work of the Bureau?s environmental research efforts. Research to identify and correct environmental problems associated with mining and metallurgical operations has long been an integral part of the Bureau's mission. The environmental research and demonstration activities of the Bureau were consolidate in 1979 with the formation of the Minerals Environmental Technology program, which is directed toward the elimination or reduction of environmental problems associated with the extraction and processing of minerals. Among the efforts underway are development of data and technology for assessing the potential environmental impact of minerals development, for monitoring minerals extraction operations, and for establishing viable reclamation requirements on abandoned mine lands; development and demonstration of technology 'or control of environmental disturbances during minerals extraction operations; development and demonstration of land reclamation and mine closure techniques to restore or enhance the productive use of mined lands; development of engineering techniques that incorporate state-of-the-art mining environmental technology in the design and planning of minerals extraction operations; development and demonstration of new mining systems that greatly reduce or eliminate the adverse environmental impacts of minerals extraction; and providing the technologic base for Federal, State, and local establishment of environmental standards for mining operations. Included in the minerals-processing-related work are projects to clean mineral-processing waters: demonstrate a Bureau process for scrubbing SO from powerplant stack :;as; recover dissolved minerals from process streams; stabilize discarded dusts, slags, and tailings: remove hazardous contaminates from byproduct wastes; reduce generation of waste solids; and improve metallurgical process engineering to eliminate pollution. Approximately $21 million was appropriated for this work in fiscal year 1981.

The heap leaching of base metal ores can be applied within a number of different scenarios, each requiring its own set of parameters to be determined during the metallurgical testwork programme. The occurrence of acid-gangue reactions and its concomitant precipitation reactions is a factor common to all cases, and requires that the optimal irrigation acid strength be found that optimises the combination of extraction kinetics, acid consumption and possible premature blinding of the heap due to precipitation reactions. For the heap bioleaching of base metal sulphide ores the oxygen requirement needs to be determined for the design of the aeration system, and the operating conditions employed need to also facilitate bacterial growth over and above the acid strength optimisation mentioned above. For the heap bioleaching of chalcopyrite, the need to preserve heat in the heap becomes yet a further parameter of critical importance. For the heap leaching of uranium ore a choice is required between either chemical or bacterial oxidation, based on economic and processing factors. Frequently the operating parameters need to be determined for a circuit in which heap leaching is combined with tank leaching and/or pressure leaching. The processing implications and metallurgical testwork approach for each case is discussed.

The Mitchell Creek Landslide is a large, structurally controlled, complex bedrock instability located in northwestern British Columbia. Characterization of the landslide using aerial photograph, exploration geology, and geotechnical investigation data has been completed allowing the development of a three dimensional conceptual model of the landslide domains and slope behaviour. Three domains have been identified in the landslide, from top to bottom: the Sliding domain, a relatively intact slab slowly sliding into the valley; the Transition domain, located in the mid slope of the landslide and showing evidence of significant extension and continuing to subside and displace into the valley; and a Toppling domain, at the toe of the landslide in an area of overturned foliation. Movement is greatest in the Toppling domain, with long term estimated rates of movement up to 4 times that of the Sliding domain; the Transition domain exhibits the greatest range of displacement rates, with average long term values approximately double the slower Sliding domain. This paper documents the results of numerical modelling of the Mitchell Creek Landslide with variation in geomechanical properties, basal rupture surface configuration, structural fabric, and pore water pressure conditions. The locations of internal shear surfaces within the landslide have been estimated from surface scarps, structural fabric orientation, and borehole monitoring data. The performance of each numerical model was evaluated against observed behaviour of the landslide. The configuration and properties of the basal rupture surface were identified as critical to model behaviour, as was spacing and location of internal structures.

Long Shaft has traditionally been seen as one of the most challenging mines in the Kambalda area with operations having been suspended by the previous owners in 1999. When mining recommenced in October 2002, the current owners (Lightning Nickel) decided that a different approach was required for mining operations in such an aggressive geotechnical environment. This paper describes how Lightning Nickel has successfully and safely operated the Long Shaft complex on a traditional mining approach, which encompasses the key learnings of the previous owners.

"The Keystone porphyry molybdenum deposit, located in southcentral British Columbia, is hosted by intrusive rocks of the Cretaceous Mount Lytton batholith and the early Tertiary Keystone quartz diorite stock. The molybdenite mineralization is associated with rhyolite porphyry dikes flanking a large 1300 m by 2100 m breccia complex. Recognition of the potential for the buried molybdenum porphyry system was based on quartz-molybdenite vein fragments within the hydrothermal breccias.The full extent of the molybdenum mineralization is not known. The few deep drill holes along one comer of the breccia complex defines strong metal zoning of molybdenum and associated elements of F, Mn, Zn, Pb, Au, Ag, Fe and W about the molybdenum stockwork mineralization that may be useful for guiding additional exploration. The best mineralization occurred near the base of the deepest drill hole with 0.114% Mo in rhyolite porphyry near the edge of the breccia pipe at a depth of 1350 m.The exploration history of the deposit has been complex, focussing on both porphyry-style mineralization and precious metal veins and stockworks on the periphery of the porphyry system. Exploration to date has defined an attractive porphyry molybdenum system with uneconomic grades at great depth; however, there remains significant potential to define economic mineralization elsewhere in the Keystone porphyry system and adjoining occu""ences."

"A coordinated, integrated research effort aimed at studying the scientific, engineering and medical aspects of the respirable dust problem is underway in the areas of dust generation, dust dispersion and dilution, dust characterization, interaction of dust and lungs, and relationship of seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. (FIGURE 24) The Center's research program explores these concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniques that are consistent with the dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The fundamental aspects of this work are applicable to the control of respirable dust problems in both hard rock mines and coal mines and to other dusts such as diesel-generated.Research projects in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust have effected several improved methods for the preparation and characterization of the dusts needed by these projects. Superior procedures for generating ""standard"" dust samples have been developed and are in regular use in the laboratory. Questions raised during the course of some projects regarding ""stale"" versus ""fresh"" dust have led to the development of sampling techniques where the dust is directly collected in a surfactant. MSHA and CANMET have requested and received information on Center generated software. An equipment manufacturer, TSI, Inc., requesting input on modifying the inlet of an aerosol sampler has been assisted as a result of research that was conducted at the University of Minnesota.The objectives, scope and progress of all the research projects in the Center, in the form of abstracts and reports, have been detailed in Volume 1 of this series. Research papers written by the principle investigators and resulting from the findings of projects (FIGURE 25) and which are funded by U.S. Bureau of Mines grant number G1135142 have been published in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. Volume 2 relates the cooperation and interaction of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust in research on the problem of respirable dust in the mineral industries."
