This paper describes the production of a specific iron oxide pellet that has given very good and consistent results as feedstock for HYL-Process Direct Reduction Plants. The sponge iron originated from these pellets has been used for the economic making of almost 15 million tons of low carbon steel via electric arc furnace meltshops. An overview of mining, benefication, pelletizing direct reduction and steelmaking for this case is given with emphasis on the characteristics of the self-fluxing oxide pellets. THE COAL DIVISION started its share of the annual meeting Monday morning with a study of coal classi fication. A. C. Fieldner was in the chair. The report of the tellers of the ballot for division chairman, stating that Thomas G. Fear had been elected to that office, was read by M. D. Cooper. Mr. Fear acknowledged the honor in a few words. In reviewing the history of the Coal Classification Committee the chairman pointed out that this was its third symposium, the last previous one having been held at the 1930 Annual Meeting. Throughout its work the com¬mittee has had the active cooperation of the Canadian workers who are interested in the subject which should result in a uniform scheme of classification in Canada and the United States. F. E. Lathe, of the National Research Council, Ottawa, abstracted the first two papers of the session entitled "Determination of the Alkali-Soluble Ulmins in Coal," by Edgar Stansfield and K. C. Gilbart, and "Moisture Determination for Coal Classification," by the same authors. The third paper "Condition of Water in Coals of Various Ranks"' was presented by its author, A. W. Gauger. Written discussions of these papers were presented by H. C. Porter and Gilbert H. Cady. In the oral discussion which followed, W. T. Thom, Jr., brought out the advisability of considering age as a factor in classification. Mr. Fieldner favored retaining bed moisture as a partial classification basis, stating that a review of many coal analyses revealed a remarkable consistency in this item in samples from a given mine particularly where the moisture content was not high. Mr. Porter pointed out that the structure and porosity of coal often have much to do with its moisture content and that these vary in different parts of a seam, particularly in anthracite. Mr. Gauger expressed doubt as to whether the Stansfield method gives the true moisture content of coal, which is needed for classification purposes.

Uranium mill tailings disposal facilities present unique problems with respect to siting, design, and long-term stability because their contents remain potentially hazardous for 100,000 years. Dawn Mining Company, operator of a uranium mill in Washington, undertook geological and geophysical studies relative to planned expansion of existing disposal facilities. Seismic refraction and reflection, resistivity, and ground magnetics data were integrated with limited drill data to determine the configuration of Quaternary sediments and the underlying basaltic and granitic bedrock. Analysis of multiple reflections and magnet modelling on a micro-computer with CRT graphics added detail to the interpretation.

"Investigations of flotation characteristics of Lumwana and Kansanshi ores using formulated frothers were carried out. Of the six frothers tested, two came from the alcohol family, two from the glycol family and last two were formulated products. The initial work involved determining the optimum mesh of grind and frother dosage for Lumwana and Kansanshi ores. Further work involved carrying out surface tension, bubble size and froth stability measurements. Finally, water recovery tests were conducted at Lumwana and Kansanshi mine sites. For froth stability tests, six frothers were tested on a two-phase (water–air) system using the Bikerman column flotation cell, while water recovery tests were conducted using a total of seven frothers, including the standards for each plant. The results of the testwork showed that (i) although a stable froth is essential for optimum recovery of valuable minerals, a higher molecular weight frother, like Dowfroth 250, caused poor selectivity when used on fine ores and (ii) a lower molecular weight frother was suited for Lumwana ore, while a mid to higher molecular weight formulated product was suitable for Kansanshi sulphide ore. Firstly, froth stability tests were conducted using six frothers, two from the glycol family (Dowfroth 200 and Dowfroth 250), two from alcohol family (MIBC and pine oil) and other two from the formulated family (Betafroth 20 and Betafroth 245), at the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Mineral Research (CMR) laboratories. "This paper describes a new processing of ultrafine, magnetic ferrites from sulfuric acid pickling solution in steel industry. In the ferrite processing, the iron (II) in the pickling solution was first oxidized to iron (III) by using the acidophilic thennophile Acidianus brierleyi. The bio-oxidized pickling solution was treated with solvent extraction to separate the iron (III) into the organic solution of tertiary aliphatic monocarboxylic acid. After that, the carboxylate solutions of iron (III) and other metal (cobalt) were hydrolyzed and precipitated ultrafine particles of crystalline ferrites at l90°C and l. 3 MPa for 20 min.IntroductionHot-rolled steel sheet has always a layer of oxides on its surface. The oxide layer arises as scale in hot rolling processes in steel industry, and the scale consists of the three iron oxides such as hematite Fez03, magnetite Fep4, and wustite FeO. Pickling removes chemically the scale layer that adheres to the steel surface. For normal steels, pickling is carried out in 15-20% hydrochloric acid at 60-70°C or in 20-25% sulfuric acid at 95-100°C. When steel is pickled with sulfuric acid, the scale oxides dissolve to give iron (II) sulfate.Spent pickling solutions are hazardous wastes containing a large amount of dissolved iron (II) and sulfuric acid, e.g., about 40 kg/m3 of dissolved iron (II) at pH 0. In typical commercial processes, spent pickling solution is usually cooled evaporatively to 5°C, and then to 0°C to crystallize iron (II) sulfate as its heptahydrate. After the crystallization operation, the sulfuric acid can be reused in the pickling operation.In this paper we describes a new processing of ultrafine, magnetic ferrite from sulfuric acid pickling solution, in order to recover dissolved iron (II) in the form of a valuable product. In the ferrite processing, the iron (III) was first supplied by the microbial oxidation of iron (II) in the pickling solution, and then the biooxidized pickling solution was treated with solvent extraction to separate the iron (III) into the organic carboxylate solution. After that, the carboxylate solutions of iron (III) and other metal (cobalt) were precipitated crystalline ferrites under hydrothermal conditions."

Microbial pretreatment of a double refractory gold ore was investigated using a white rot fungus, Coriolus versicolor (ATTC 20869) to improve gold extraction. A series of preliminary tests were conducted to determine the amenability of the ore to fungus degradation. Pulp density, temperature, pH and retention times were the process variables considered. Both a single. Stage and two-step processes were studied to establish process conditions. During the single stage process, the ore was contacted with the fungus culture (biotic) for 3weeks at 30°C and pH 10.0. For the two-step process, the first step involves ore contact with the culture medium (abiotic) at 45°C and pH 10.0 followed by fungal contact (biotic) at 30°C. Results indicated that carbonaceous matter is not degraded but passivated by the fungus; as preg-robbing activities dropped significantly from 18.1% to below 1.0%. The single stage process resulted in higher gold recovery than the two-step process Gold ex-traction by cyanidation of the pretreated ore was 78.9% for the single stage compared with 15.0% for the untreated ore. In the two-step process, only 73.3% gold extraction was achieved. Application of the two step process conditions to a high grade flotation concentrate, resulted in 93.3% gold ex-traction as against untreated concentrate of 30.5%. The results show that the microbial pretreatment process degraded sulfide sulfur, passivated carbonaceous matter and enhanced gold extraction from double refractory gold ore and concentrate.

This article is a continuation of a series of publications by the authors on the international debate on resource nationalism, with specific reference to South Africa. Previous outcomes have shown that mine nationalization is not a solution for South Africa, and that maintaining stability of the current mineral and tax regimes is fundamental. It will not be wise to replace existing law and policy instruments until there is a better understanding of the distinction between fact and public perception about the impact of the current system. The new scheme of state custodianship linked to a mining royalty that effectively targets economic rents provides for effective resource use. The methodology in this article is to consider how South Africa's mineral tax regime can be tweaked to achieve optimal management and benefit from mineral extraction and associated rents by avoiding changes feared by investors. The major finding is that the current suite of instruments can be considered a suitable platform for optimal management of resource rents. However, it will be necessary to first investigate ways of improving the mineral beneficiation intent of the royalty structure, and secondly investigate whether the mineral rent portion of the royalty formula can be ring-fenced for the purpose of establishing a sovereign wealth fund.

In this study, it was aimed to produce glass sand with less than 0.15% Fe2O3 for window glass manufacture and glass ware grade with less than 0.05% Fe2O3 from Yalõköy sand dunes having 0.48% Fe2O3. In order to reduce the iron content of the Yalõköy sand dune, magnetic separation, flotation, scrubbing, H2SO4 leaching and drying were used. The optimum iron removal was achieved by H2SO4 baking at 150oC and 8 kg/t acid consumption. In this way, sand concentrate was obtained with 0.04% Fe2O3 and sand recovery 95%.

"Flotation of metal-organic precipitate in column is sensible to the hydrodynamic conditions determined by the diameter and the dispersion of rising bubbles. Thus, the dissipation energy in the system resulting of ratio between superficial fluid velocities (gas and feed) in the column is the main parameter for precipitate flotation in pilot or industrial scales. The suggested limiting factor is the aggregate stability under the turbulence created by the rising bubbles. The stability of precipitate is related to the structural organisation of aggregates, which determines the size distribution of particles during precipitation and flotation stages.Structural evolution of Mo precipitate and the destruction phenomenon were described by using of the various fractal dimensions. The fractal studies allow the detection of a structural scaled organisation of the precipitate flocs. The fractal dimension of the particle mass distribution Dm=1.94+/-0.15 suggests, for the floc structure, a cluster-cluster aggregation process either with restructuring or breakage phases.The destruction process, which occurs for the lowest values of the dissipation energy E (0.02 . 0.05 W/kg) was characterised by a fractal dimension Dg of size distribution. Besides, the destruction of floc produces very fine particles, and thus induces the difficulties of bubble-particle collision during the precipitate flotation in column."

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream pH is very important in leach mining and treatment of MIW (mining influenced water). On the production side, solution acidity can impact SX (solvent extraction) effectiveness through PLS (pregnant leach solution) and raffinate pH. Many older operations and legacy mining sites generate ARD (acid rock drainage) that is too weak for profitable metal production by conventional means and faces costly wastewater treatment for mitigation and disposal. For wastewater and environmental treatment, neutralization to precipitate and remove metal contaminants to clean the wastewater is the dominant approach. Traditional lime neutralization and precipitation is most often used but results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS); which focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources, has developed a new “reagentless” neutralization process. Electricity is utilized in its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform capability to controllably raise target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost approach yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. It can result in less sludge generation and enables possibilities to selectively recover contaminants as potentially saleable products for new revenue generation to offset further offset treatment costs. By S FREDERICK RAVITZ AND KENNETH E FISHER (Tech Pub 681, also Trans , vol 121 2300 words) Four liquids are ordinarily produced in lead smelting, namely, bullion, speiss, matte and slag To determine whether these exist together in equilibrium, the distribution of gold and silver among them was measured To crucibles containing similar mixtures of all four products, varying amounts of silver were added, and the crucibles were heated together under the same conditions for 3 hr, during which the charges melted and separated into four layers After cooling, these layers were assayed for silver, and the distribution coefficients, 1 e , the ratios of the concentration of silver in any particular layer to that in the bullion, were calculated In each experiment, each distribution coefficient was found to be constant, regardless of the amount of silver used Similar results were obtained using gold instead of silver The constancy of the distribution coefficients indicates that the bullion, speiss, matte, and slag exist together in equilibrium

In mining operations, cyanidation is the ,predominant method by which gold and silver are recovered from their ores and it is recognized that cyanide consumption can be a major factor that contributes to the operating costs for such operations. Also after extraction and recovery of precious metals a certain amount of cyanide is delivered to the tailings pond and must be considered with respect is environmental problems due to the toxicity of cyanides. In this regard, the Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone (ASH) has been used as a reactor for the treatment of cyanide solutions in two ways; first for cyanide recovery by acidulation using the Mexican modification of the Mills-Crowe process and second for cyanide destruction by oxidation with the use of chlorine dioxide (ClO2). In both cases, excellent performance can be achieved using the high capacity ASH system.

In 1953, Dr N Fisher of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, acting on behalf of the Society of Economic Geologists, which is considering the sponsoring of a uniform system of nomenclature for ore reserves, enquired from The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy whether it had ever considered this subject and particularly whether it had ever set up any standard definitions or specifications with regard to ore reserves.As this had not been done, but was thought to be desirable, the Council of The Institute appointed a Committee consisting of H H Dunkin, Associate Professor of Mining Engineering, University of Melbourne (Convenor); E A Rudd, Professor of Economic Geology, University of Adelaide; J D Campbell, Chief Geologist of Western Mining Corporation; and the writer, to consider the report on this subject.In December 1953, the Committee submitted its frrst report to the Council and this report (reproduced here as an Appendix) was widely circulated among member companies and engineers, with an invitation to comment on the proposals. A large number of replies was received and studied.After studying the replies the Committee issued a second report, in part as follows:From these replies we have learned that the suggestions made in the frrst report of the Committee are unacceptable to most of those interested, on one or all of the following grounds:a. number of categoriesb. defmition of categoriesc. nomenclature.It is also apparent that all alternatives suggested in the various replies would likewise be unacceptable to the majority of those replying.As a result, we have come to the conclusion that neither this Committee nor any other could at present and in the present state of opinion on the subject make recommendations regarding classification and nomenclature of ore reserves which would be acceptable to a sufficiently large proportion of members.It seems to us now that the objective of a widely applicable and acceptable system of classification and nomenclature, one that could be endorsed by The Institute and ultimately become standard practice in the industry, requires more than compromise between present conflicting views... it requires first a foundation of substantial agreement on the essential facts, implications and range of ore reserve estimation. This does not yet exist and it is evident that much additional analysis of present practice and opinion must be undertaken before any further systhesis is attempted.

An integrated mine system must be capable of displaying and reporting valuable information that can be used to easily understand, manage and take action on the key parameters being reported.One of the key aspects of integration is the standardisation of the mine information up to a level capable of adapting the main characteristics of past projects at the mine and enforcing the same or higher standards for newer projects being developed.At the El Teniente mine, photogrammetry is used to map the advance of horizontal developments, and the constructed 3D representation of each face is then used by the geologists to obtain structural information about the areas being photographed.The mine realised that valuable mining information could also be extracted from the photogrammetry being applied, with three possible areas of development envisioned.The first area was creating a link between the developments being planned on a yearly and monthly basis and matching them with plan sections of the 3D developments of the system to account for any deviations.The second area was to use vertical sections of the 3D developments to estimate the overbreak of the excavations in different areas of the mine.The third area was the provision of a more detailed analysis of the sections so that they could provide information on the thickness of the shotcrete being applied.This paper presents the different alternatives being used and examines how the project is currently being developed and managed at the mine. Rio Tinto has embarked on a journey to use automation to improve the performance of its surface mines. The driver for automation is to improve the accuracy and consistency of mining processes and less to do with cost savings through labour reduction. A key task in most surface mines is blasthole drilling. The degree to how well this is done cascades through the downstream mining process. It impacts scheduling, excavation, slope stability, material handling, beneficiation and final product blending. Improved blasthole drilling was identified as an objective that has a significant business case in most of Rio Tinto's surface mines. This paper describes Rio Tinto's drill enhancement project that has developed a robust system for automating most of the functions on a Terex SKSS16 drill rig. Automated drilling is currently being used in production at the West Angelas iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A description of the essential elements of the drill automation system is given together with an overview of how automated drilling is performed remotely from the mine office. A review of some of the benefits of the enhanced drill system is given together with the future plans to extend the functionality of the automated drill and the expected benefits.

This report, the 22d in a series, gives analytical data showing composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1972. This coverage lists mines located in 20 States. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. The deliveries were sampled in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines, and the samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

The mining sector, which has an important place in terms of raw material and energy supply, is referred as a sector with one of the highest fatal accidents in comparison with other sectors. In this century, where occupational health and safety awareness has increased, it is important to review the past accident statistics and to determine the current deficiencies by using the information in the inventory. In this study, the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) has been utilized to investigate the changes in the work accidents occurring in the Western Lignite Corporation (Turkey), where underground and surface production methods are applied, and to determine the measures to be taken. According to the results obtained, both the decrease in production amount and the increase in the number of accidents caused inefficiencies during the period in concern due to the expected 10-year economic life of the mechanized system operating in the underground production panel that came to an end in 2007 and the flooding took place in early 2017. Compared with the underground operations, it has been determined that production can be carried out at the appropriate scale despite the heavy working conditions encountered due to the changing climatic conditions and the progress of production in the surface operations.

The Canadian steel industry is now in many ways a mature one, having achieved many technical successes during its hundred-year history. It is interesting to look back over this period, to learn something of the histories of the different producers and of the people and forces that shaped their development. The following article provides a thumbnail sketch of the Canadian steel industry as it exists today. It is intended for the general reader, not for the specialist who will want to consult the several books and theses written on the development of the industry during the last hundred years. The famous Les Forges du Saint-Maurice, an important iron producer for a century and a half, provides a natural historical starting point for a look at the four major players - Dosco, Algoma, Stelco and Dofasco - who have provided most of the hundreds of millions of tonnes of steel, in every form from horseshoes to tinplate, needed in the twentieth century. The smaller companies which have sprung up in the last 20 or 30 years are dealt with briefly - but only because their history is so recent. Not so long ago the mini-mill, based on scrap rather than on the blast furnace, was thought to be specially suited to the economies of the smaller developing countries of the Third World. However, recent history has made it evident that the small plant, specializing in a few basic products (e.g. reinforcing bar) or taking advantage of special circumstances, can successfully compete with the large blast furnace/primary steel producers.

During its modem era, the southern Powder River Basin (PRB) in Wyoming has grown from meager origins in the early 1970s to become one of the most important coal-producing regions in the United States. In 1993, production and sales of southern Powder River Basin coal exceeded 190 Mt (209 million st), or about 20% of the US coal industry. Despite the remote location of the PRB relative to its potential markets, most coal industry observers anticipate continued strong growth to meet utility compliance plans for Phases I and II of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA). This article is an overview of supply and demand issues concerning the marketing of southern PRB coal. It reviews the events leading up to the recent run on spot coal and offers a forecast of demand and prices.

The extractive metallurgy of nickel and cobalt has proved to be a particularly fruitful area for innovation in hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy ever since the development of the Hybinette process for nickel in the early 1900's. In current practice, nickel concentrates are generally smelted to high grade mattes which are then refined to metal by a combination of hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy, although low grade copper-nickel concentrates are refined directly by the ammonia pressure leach process. Matte refining processes in commercial operation include the direct electrolysis of matte, the ammonia pressure leach, sulphuric acid leaching using air or oxygen at elevated pressure, or at ambient pressure, and chlorine or chloride leaching. Refined nickel is recovered either as electrolytic cathode, or as metal powder by hydrogen, reduction. Hydrometallurgy has also found application in the treatment of nickel laterite ores, both in the reduction roast ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach process, pioneered by Caron and in the Moa Bay acid leach process. Cobalt is recovered as a co-product of copper in central Africa, and as a byproduct of hydrometallurgical nickel refining elsewhere. In the African plants, the copper-cobalt concentrates are roasted and leached in sulphuric acid solution, and copper and cobalt are recovered separately from the leach solution by direct electrowinning. A variety of hydrometallurgical techniques are used for the separation of cobalt from nickel, including selective precipitation and crystallization, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. Like nickel, refined cobalt is recovered either as electrolytic cathode or as metal powder by hydrogen reduction.
