The processes and fluxes of a cast iron foundry plant located in the North of Italy were analyzed in order to determine the amount and kind of wastes produced from the different activities. The main fractions are the molding sands, furnace muds and powders coming from the dust abatement plant, the exhaust lime, the furnace refractory, the metallic shotting and the sludges and powders coming from the dust abatement plant of molding lines for a total production equal to 800 t/d. All wastes were sampled and particle-size and chemically characterized to evaluate the best recycling or reuse solutions. Wastes were sieved and divided in three categories according to the particle-size dimensions: below 0.1 mm, between 0.1 and 0.6 mm and above 0.6 mm. The fraction above 0.6 mm dimension underwent magnetic separation to recover and quantify the potentially available iron fraction. The fraction between 0.1 mm and 0.6 mm was chemically characterized in order to understand if it could be fed to the sand regeneration plant. The below 0.1 mm fraction was characterized to evaluate the following recycling and reuse solutions: additive for molding sands and/or raw material for the concrete industry.

Resolution Copper Mining is sinking a 6943 foot (2116 m) deep shaft to access and develop a new panel caving mine with approximately 1.6 billion known tons of porphyry copper resource. This mine will take several years to ramp up to its full production level of 132,300 tons per day (120,000 tonnes per day) and is scheduled to begin production in the early 2020s. Resolution's shaft sinking contractor Cementation USA is using state of the art sinking methods combined with a largely local labor force to complete this record breaking shaft. Resolution's No. 10 Shaft has finished diameter of 28 feet (8.5m) and as of October 2013 is at the 6625 foot (2020 m) level. Upon completion in early 2014, the No. 10 Shaft will be the deepest single lift shaft in the United States.

The successful application of factors limiting the? availability of coal in eastern Kentucky depends on ac-curate assessment of the original resources. Examination of several previous coal-resource estimates for the region reveals significant differences among the outcomes. These differences relate to methods of analysis, biases in data and their utilization, and the problem of defining the lateral continuity of mineable beds. Improvements in the methods of estimating the original resources would greatly enhance the reliability of the results of the Coal Availability Program.

Fragmentation is an important factor for improving downstream processes in mine operations. Six trials have been conducted at the Aitik copper mine to investigate the effect of ultra-short inter-hole delay times, i.e. smaller than 1 ms/m of burden, on fragmentation. Swelling, MWD data, and crusher efficiency were also evaluated for trials. According to the results, the effect of examined short inter-hole delay times, i.e. 0.14 to 0.86 ms/m of burden, on fragmentation was found to be marginal. Delay time of 0.43 ms/m of burden resulted in slightly finer fragmentation and larger swell; however, the effect of short delays was overshadowed by the effect of small variations in specific charge.

The Indentation Fracture technique is being developed as a tool for use in comminution and mineral liberation analysis. Fracture toughness measurements for a number of mineralogical materials were made and comparisons were drawn between these and properties measured with the Ultrafast Load Cell drop weight apparatus. The technique has also been used as a probe to quantify differences in fracture properties at different areas in the microstructure of a material. In both a Utah limestone and a South African quartzite, material near a grain boundary fractures very differently to that in the bulk. Ongoing work is ultimately aimed at producing a comprehensive fracture model for a multi-mineral system based on its micro-fracture characteristics.

Hydrometallurgical zinc winning processes ?are frequently based on iron containing concentrates which yield a goethite, jarosite or hematite residue. Jarosite or goethite are mostly stored in waste ponds which ,are lined with foil. Water percolating through the pond is withdrawn from the deposit ,and decontaminated before discharge. Despite these measures, more and more pressure is put upon zinc companies to treat their (historical) residues and to produce environmentally acceptable residues. The criterion which determines this acceptability is the potentiality of leaching out hazardous elements by natural processes. This paper provides the comparison of five different process designs for integrated jarosite treatment in a hydrometallurgical zinc winning plant leading to environmentally acceptable residues. The processes are esigned for producing 200 ktons/yr zinc and for treating 80 ktonslyr historical jarosite. Mass and energy balances are used to determme parameters such as: the energy use per ton waste treated and the amount and composition of final residues. The conclusion of the work is that. pyrometallurgical jarosite treatment integrated in hydrometallurgical zinc winning is preferable to hydrometallurgical jarosite treatment. Integrated pyrometallurgical processes lead to a ?smaller quantity of remaining hazardous residues and require less energy.

The Cassiar Asbestos mine is situated on McDame Mountain in northern B.C. at a mean elevation of 6000 ft (1830 m), some 6 miles (9.6 km) from the townsite /mill complex. Asbestos ore production averages 1,200,000 tons at 9% R.M.G. (Recoverable Mine Grade) and waste production is 6,000,000 cu. yd annually. Waste is loaded by P&H 1900 AL 11-cu.-yd shovels and transported by 75-ton and 85-ton end-dump trucks to the waste dumps. The ore is loaded by a 992 Caterpillar 10-cu-yd front-end loader into 50-ton and 75-ton trucks, which transport it to the crushing plant located at the mine. The ore is transported by a 15,370-ft (4685-m) tramline to the mill complex.

"The refining of thermally produced zinc is currently performed using a highly energy intensive and arguably outmoded process, distilling zinc under atmospheric pressure at temperatures of 900°C to 1000°C. In order to produce refined zinc more profitably and with less environmental impact a new process has been proposed. This process is generic to all thermal zinc smelters and aims to match the purity of zinc from current technology (99.99%-99.999%). The objective is to perform all separation processes using only the heat contained in the smelter product stream. Vacuum conditions are extensively used lowering operating temperatures and enhancing separations. As part of this process zinc is distilled under vacuum from high concentration obtaining a refined product with respect to lead content. A mathematical model has been developed from fundamental principles to describe this stage, the distillation of zinc across a temperature difference between two circulating zinc streams in open channels under vacuum. Heat for the distillation is supplied by the liquid phase, necessitating a large recycle to maintain high operating temperatures, and keep zinc concentrations high. In determining this model and the operating conditions required, relationships between temperature, pressure and composition are considered.IntroductionCurrent technology (the Refluxer) used to refine thermally produced zinc is both expensive and highly inefficient. At present 80% of the worlds zinc is produced via the electrolytic process reflecting the poorer performance of the thermal route, the zinc-lead blast furnace and Refluxer. A new process is proposed to overcome the drawbacks of current processes. These drawbacks are both economic and environmental. The Refluxer requires 6.6 GJ of energy to refine one tonne of SHG zinc 1, other disadvantages of the Refluxer stem from high operating temperature, around 900°C, and liquid zinc being highly corrosive towards ferrous metals. The Refluxer is constructed from silicon carbide sections which join together by means of flat machined faces making liquid metal leaks inevitable. The Refluxer columns are very sensitive to thermal cycling, thermal shock and mechanical vibration, which easily lead to structural failure. To avoid thermal stress on the columns the feed rate and feed temperature need to be kept constant which means the feed baths to the columns must be able to accept solid and liquid feed as the Refluxer has to operate when the smelter is shut down."

The Runruno Gold Project is located on the island of Luzon, approximately 200 miles north of Manilla in the Philippines. The mine is an open cut operation and uses the proven BIOX® and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes to recover gold, and the ASTER™ process for detoxification of the CIL residue prior to discharge to the Residue Storage Impoundment (RSI). Work to date has defined a mineral resource of 1.39 million ounces (Moz) of gold, and the operation will produce 96 700 oz of gold per annum over a mine life of 10.4 years. The BIOX circuit is designed to treat 140 000 t/y of concentrate with a design capacity of 404 t/d of concentrate at a design sulfide sulfur grade of 17% S2-.The Runruno BIOX Plant is the first application of the Outotec BIOX Generation III design principles, focussing on ease of operation and maintainability. During development and implementation, the project team focussed on identifying opportunities to optimise the capital efficiency while not compromising on the operability or overall efficiency of the process or the equipment. The BIOX plant also incorporates the latest developments in the design of the BIOX agitators for more efficient mixing and gas dispersion. This paper will discuss some of the critical aspects and decisions taken during the development and implementation of the BIOX Process at the Runruno Gold Project. The paper will highlight some of the factors affecting the commissioning process as well as the improvements seen through the introduction of the Generation III BIOX design principles. "Geometallurgy brings together geologists, mine planners and process engineers to extract meaningful mineralogical and textural information from an orebody, with a view to predicting its metallurgical response. Preferably, automated analytical techniques, which provide mineralogical and textural information, should process a large number of samples quickly, relatively inexpensively and reliably. Microfocus X-ray computed tomography (µXCT) is capable of producing 3D volumetric information on texture and mineralogy that satisfies some of these criteria. µXCT has been used extensively to study the porosity and internal pore structure of iron ore pellets as part of downstream processing. It has not been widely applied to earlier mineralogical and textural analysis of unprocessed ore, due to the limited ability of X-rays to penetrate high-density samples. This investigation was made to study new methods to prepare high-purity yttrium metal, Various methods were used to prepare pure intermediate compounds, primarily chlorides, bromides, and iodides, which were subsequently reduced to metal. The process found most suitable for the preparation of pure anhydrous yttrium chloride involved thermal dehydration of a mixture of hydrated yttrium chloride and ammonium chloride while under vacuum. Yttrium bromide and iodide were prepared most effectively by the direct halogenation of yttrim carbide. Yttrim carbide was obtained by reacting and melting yttrium oxide-carbon mixtures in a carbon-arc furnace. Yttrium halides were purified by vacuum distillation and reduced by alkali or alkaline-earth metals. Lithium and sodium proved to be the best reductants from the standpoint of yield (>95 pct) and purity (>99.8 pct) of the yttrium. The product of the reduction step was sponge metal, which was consolidated readily by conventional cold-mold, arc-melting procedure. The purest yttrium obtained in laboratory scale work was prepared by sodium reduction of yttrium chloride and contained only 125 pp oxygen; other impurities did not exceed 1,000 ppm. In larger scale tests yttrium containing only 800 to 1,000 ppm total impurities was obtained by lithium reduction of yttrium chloride. The tensile properties of high-purity yttrium were determined. Mechanical tests showed that yttrium can be forged, extruded, rolled, spot welded, and deep drawn.

The trucking industry is constantly seeking improvement and cost reduction of their vehicles, studying new lighter and robust materials to meet the needs of its customers. The objective of this work is to study the application of DCPD Telene, PU. R. RIM and PP-TD 20 materials in aesthetic components of trucks: bumper, calender, upper and lower bracket and side air deflector. A multifunctional work team was created to work in such parts of IVECO trucks. The work began with an analysis of possible improvements to the current parts and followed the subsequent phases: definition of new materials, virtual modeling, new tools, and durability test in vehicles. It could then be verified that the proposed DCPD Telene, PUR. RIM and PP-TD 20 materials showed greater strength, better painting surface, and reduced weight and cost in parts.

Within recent years several mining companies have sent expeditions co the east end of Great Slave lake co determine the mineral possibilities of that area. Little was known of the geography of the region, and even less of the geology; and, not until Blancher's survey was made and the results published, was an accurate map of the lake available. Early explorers followed the Inconnu channel and the north shore of McLeod bay to Port Reliance, and, just prior to Blancher's survey, Hornby showed that the southern passage was feasible. Apparently, but few geologists have ? travelled through the country, for geological information is meager. In 1900, Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey, made a trip to Fort Reliance by way of the north shore of McLeod bay, and he gives a brief description of the geology. The present paper is the result of an expedition into this little-known region by Mr. Geo. M. Douglas and the writer in the summer of 1928. The south shore of Great Slave lake was followed to the east end of Tochatwi bay, and an extensive exploration was made of Kahochella and Pethei peninsulas. The prime object of the expedition was co determine the presence or absence of the copper-bearing Keweenawan basalts.

In the 1940's a top blown water-cooled oxygen lance was developed to inject oxygen into liquid iron. This process, the LD or BOF process technique, today is used in 65% of the world's steel production, and represents the largest oxygen market for temperature enhancement in steel and non-ferrous smelting applications. There are three major approaches to the use of oxygen in metallurgical processes: (1) general enrichment of the air supplied to burners or tuyeres, (2) under-flame enrichment or injection, and (3) the use of an auxiliary oxy-fuel burner as a heat source. With each of these techniques there are technical and economic trade-offs.

The total number of tailings accidents has reduced from over 50/decade in the 1960s-1980s to less than 30/decade in the 2000s to 2010s. However, the rate of significant tailings dam failures has not been reduced. The significant tailings dam failures the mining industry experienced in the recent history include: Merriespruit, South Africa, 1994; Los Frails, Spain, 1998; Kolontár, Hungry, 2010; Mount Polley, Canada, 2014; and Samarco, Brazil, 2015. The conventional Factor of Safety approach itself may not be enough to further reduce the rate of significant tailings failures due to its limitations such as uncertainty. For example, the same factor of safety could have a vast range of annual probability of failure for different tailings dams, and insufficient consideration of failure consequence. This paper presents a risk based approach for design with the objective being to minimise tailings dam failures, especially those significant tailings failures with high consequence and low probability. This approach includes risk based design and risk management using bowtie tools. In the risk based design, quantitative analysis will be used to estimate the annual probability of failure and the tolerable failure criteria is linked to the consequence category. Bowtie analyses will be used to understand hazards and risks and identify and select independent controls that are effective in preventing and mitigating catastrophic failures.
