Proximity Detection Systems (PDSs) are used in the mining industry for protecting mine workers from striking, pinning, and crushing injuries when they work in close proximity to heavy machines such as continuous mining machines (CMMs). Currently all Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved PDSs are magnetic field based systems which can be influenced by the presence of wire mesh that is commonly used for supporting roof and ribs in underground coal m ines. In this paper, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterize the influence of the mesh on the performance of magnetic PDSs by measuring the magnetic field difference around a CMM caused by the presence of the mesh. The results show that the magnetic fields are generally enhanced by the mesh which causes the PDS detection zones to be increased correspondingly. It was discovered that the fields around the joints of two mesh sections have the greatest enhancement and thus deserve more attention. In addition, it is found that the presence of mesh can also cause a variation in the generator current. The influence of mesh is characterized by the change in the generator current with respect to the distance between the generator and the mesh. It was found that the generator current change caused by the mesh can be significant (on the order of ten) when the mesh is extremely close to the generator (e.g, less than 1 cm) and is negligible when mesh is relatively far (greater than 0.15 m). The findings in this paper can be used to develop guidelines and best practices to mitigate the influence of mesh on PDSs. INTRODUCTION The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires operators of underground coal mines to equip place-changing continuous mining machines (CMMs) with proximity detection systems (PDSs) to protect mine workers from striking, pinning and crushing injuries when they work around these heavy machines. Although a variety of technologies can be implemented for proximity detection, the magnetic-field-based PDS that was originally developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown great effectiveness in challenging mining environments and currently all MSHA-approved PDSs are magnetic-field-based systems. As shown in Figure 1, a magnetic PDS typically includes two major components----the magnetic field generator and the Miner Wearable Component (MWC). Magnetic fields are generated by injecting a high electric current into a ferrite-rod antenna sealed in the generator. The magnetic field strength detected by an MWC varies with the distance between the MWC and the generator. In a typical PDS, multiple generators are mounted on different locations of the machine. The relative location/zone of an MWC is determined based on the field strengths from different generators picked by the MWC. Ideally, for a PDS to work properly in the underground, the magnetic fields generated by the different generators should be stable and not vary with the environment, as the system would interpret any variation of the magnetic field as a result of the distance change between the machine and the miner wearing the MWC. In reality, however, this is not always the case since magnetic fields can be altered by a number of environmental factors such as the presence of steel wire mesh that has been widely used in underground coal mines for supporting roof and ribs In this paper, the influence of mesh on the PDS performance is investigated and the magnetic field change caused by the mesh is measured.

"Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) is the final and, hence, critical melting step for the production of a sound, segregation-free ingot for the manufacture of alloys used in rotating components in aircraft engines. A mathematical model for this process has been developed by the Specialty Metal Processing Consortium (SMPC). The model predicts temperature distribution in the solidifying ingot, flow in the molten metal pool, and the electromagnetic field in the ingot. These predictions may be used to estimate the effect of melting parameters on the pool profile in the ingot. In this paper, typical pool shapes and flow fields during VAR of Alloy 718 and Ti-6Al-4V are presented. The differences in the pool profile are primarily due to vastly different melting conditions. The model predictions are compared to the observed pool shapes from industrial-size VAR ingots.1. IntroductionVacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) is a process in which an electrode is melted in vacuum by the heat from a DC electric arc. Metal droplets from the electrode fall into the molten metal pool, which solidifies in a water-cooled copper crucible to form the ingot, as shown in Figure I. The ingot obtained from VAR is sound, and has superior cleanliness and chemical homogeneity. Hence, the process is the final melting process for most nickel-base superalloys and titanium alloys used in the manufacture of critical rotating components (discs & blades) of aircraft engines. Modeling of this process provides an insight into the effect of melting parameters on the molten metal pool in the solidifying ingot, which is a key first step in process optimization and defect prevention. In this paper, typical pool shapes, both measured and predicted, for VAR of Alloy 718 and Ti-6Al-4Vare presented. Alloy 718 is the most common VAR-processed nickel-base superalloy; whereas Ti-6Al-4V is the ''workhorse"" alloy for titanium-based alloys."

With the Report of Mining Statistics, for the year 1872, there was published a geological map of the United States and Territories. This is, I believe, the only map which represents the geology of Arizona, and is, as far as my observations go, correct. It is, however, on so small a scale as to be of little practical value to the miner. I know of no other maps, even of localities, of this Territory. The topographical maps are also on so small a scale as not even to serve as guides from place to place; the largest, that of Eckhoff and Ricker, being only 30 by 30 inches to represent a territory of 135,000 square miles. For these reasons, it makes it exceedingly difficult to describe the various mining centres in an intelligent manner, and equally so to examine such a hilly country as it is intended to describe in this paper. When I first came into this Territory I soon realized the troubles I had to encounter in trying to form an opinion, or even to get the needed information on the geological contour. I have, therefore, labored as best I could to get a topographical diagram of the section of country represented by the map which accompanies this paper.* The lines run by the Land Department up the valleys of the Aqua Frio, and those west of the Hassayampa, and connected east and west to the north of Prescott, enabled me to inclose correctly the space covered by the Bradshaw and Sierra Prieta mountain groups, but the territory covered by these mountains, and the most difficult part, I have had to fill up as best I could. I have met with such success as to meet the approbation of those most familiar with the country, and, with the map in hand, any one would he able to cross it in any direction. As there has not been a single line of survey made across it, this has been no small undertaking, and I have had to depend upon sights from prominent points with the pocket-compass, or, in the absence of that, to make observations, with watch in hand, and guess as near as possible the meridian direction. "THAT WHICH WE CANNOT SEE" INTRODUCTION Often it has been stated that the greatest of all fears is fear itself - fear created only by that which we cannot see or by that which we fail to understand. The elimination or minimization of fear can best be accomplished by a thorough understanding of the underlying causes of the fear. As related to the mining industry the omnipresent fear is the dread of acquiring cancer through accumulated exposure to "that which we cannot see" - radioactivity. The understanding of the resulting exposure effects can best be obtained through acquisition of authentic data and the subsequent analysis of the same by a group of highly qualified specialists. I may point out that the nuclear industry and its source, uranium mining, greatly surpass any other industries in the degree of public awareness as to its potential environmental effects. Public out-cry has always influenced major decisions relating to how industries conduct their operations and much of their effort has resulted in many changes. The issues of health and safety in the mining industry have created considerable public concern, but intense concern to those of us directly involved within the industry. Increasing concern regarding the effect of human activity on the quality of the outer environment of air, land, and water has developed within the past two decades. There is now a growing concern about the health and safety of persons at work in their inner environment, of their working-places in industry. Hearings and investigations conducted in Canada by three appointed "Royal Commissions" have all confirmed that this concern is well justified when focused on the health and safety of workers in our mines. REGULATORY CONTROL OF URANIUM MINING OPERATIONS In Canada, the ownership of mineral resources and the control of their extraction, except for uranium, is vested under the "British North America Act" in the provinces. In all provinces the statutory basis for health and safety provisions in the mining industry can be found in the provincial "Mining Acts" with each province assuming the responsibility to produce its own "Mining Act". In particular, all of the Mining Acts in Canada place upon the management of a mine the responsibility to ensure that provincial provisions are met. INTRODUCTION In the preceding chapters we have discussed the various elements of mineral economic analysis, their interrelationships, and the most accepted and advanced techniques by which these elements are manipulated to provide the decision maker quantitative measurements for judging alternate investment opportunities. Regardless of how carefully the economic evaluation is made, and how comprehensive the study of economic parameters has been, uncertainty still remains a significant factor in the outcome of the analysis. The investor or money manager is acutely aware of the uncertainty factor. Many of the economic parameters are functions of economic forecasts and value estimates that can- not be known with any degree of certainty. The postulated DCF-ROR is based upon certain estimates representing "best guess" values, and a single point parameter DCF-ROR analysis represents a combination of "best guesses." The wise decision maker looks at such an analysis and asks the "what if" questions. What if the production cost is 10% higher than the estimate? What if there is an overrun in construction costs? What if the mineral price falls lower than expected? What will be the effect of a higher royalty rate? Many more such questions may arise in trying to assess the total risk involved in funding a mineral project. Prior to the advent of the computer it was difficult to answer all such anticipated questions because of the many laborious calculations involved. Now, with the aid of the computer, most of these questions can be answered by the analyst at the same time the original computations are made by using the process of sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analysis shows the effect of critical parameter changes upon the DCF-ROR or other profitability measure. When probability of occurrence can be associated with the various parameter value levels, sensitivity analysis becomes probabilistic analysis, and the risk factor can be quantitized in terms of total probability. SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS The determination of the sensitivity of the profitability index (usually the DCF-ROR) to changes in the various economic parameters, taking them one at a time, is called sensitivity analysis. The analysis may be performed for any number of parameters involved in the DCF-ROR computation. Generally, in mineral evaluations the most sensitive and most tested parameters are: the metal or mineral price, the operating cost, the annual production grade, and the initial capital invest-

The chain conveyor is utilized extensively in underground mining to convey raw ore, especially coal. It is estimated that several thousand loading and continuous mining machines rely on this type of conveyance. Although the chain conveyor is both efficient and highly reliable, its use is generally associated with the production of noise levels that often exceed 105 dBA at the operator's position. Thus, it is one of the most significant contributors to the occupational noise problem experienced by miners in the underground coal mining environment. Conventional engineering noise controls that result in an average reduction of 4 dBA have been previously designed and implemented. However, a novel solution involving a change in conveyor operation has been proposed that takes advantage of two aspects of conveyor noise: 1) conveyor noise has an approximately cubic dependence on conveyor chain speed and 2) due to the damping provided by coal, a full conveyor is 5 dBA quieter than an empty one. An engineering analysis has shown that a significant reduction in the operating noise level of a typical continuous miner can be achieved through the use of an adjustable speed drive automatically controlled by a coal loading sensor that maintains a full conveyor at all times. The potential reduction depends primarily on the mining conditions (coal seam thickness and the presence of either rock or water) and varies from 7-18 dBA. Other benefits to be derived from the use of a variable speed drive include reductions in power consumption, dust, and maintenance costs.

During the last ten years, longwall mining systems have undergone many changes. Panel widths and lengths have increased. Longwall faces have become more automated. Average production from individual longwall panels has increased from 1,000 to 3,600 tons per shift. To control the dust generation resulting from the higher production, longwall dust control systems have integrated various dust control techniques. Systems designed to control dust generated at the crusher/stageloader, shearer, and supports are common to most longwall faces. A survey was made of the dust controls that are currently in place on all the longwalls in the U.S. This survey addressed the types of controls used to reduce dust generated at the crusher/stageloader, shearer and roof support movement. Additionally, information on face ventilation rates, cutting cycle and level of automation was obtained. The purpose of this paper is to review the dust control practices that have been implemented throughout the United States and to identify those controls that are being used on high production longwall faces. Additionally, a model is used to demonstrate how ventilation and automation affect occupational exposure. Automation of roof support movement can offer some of the greatest reductions in occupational dust exposures. While technically feasible, its full benefit has not been fully realized by the industry. Until technology to fully automate longwall mining systems becomes more reliable, future dust control systems must rely on increased ventilation, application of headgate dust collectors, improved shearer dust controls and improved shield dust suppression systems.

Reliably detect fires by sensing sub-micrometer-sized particles released into the air by smoldering or burning materials. Approach An extremely sensitive, ionization-type fire detector has been built that continuously draws air samples through its ionizing field and collects the ionized smoke particles downstream, thereby generating a proportional electrical output signal. (An offshoot instrument measures the size distribution and number of sub-micrometer particles in air.) How It Works Mine air to be monitored is drawn through the instrument assembly by a small pump. A pre-filter and cyclone remove dust particles and other particles larger than 0.6 micrometer diameter. The air and remaining aerosol-sized particles flow through a gastight tube which contains the detector. See diagram. Smoke and other sub-micrometer-size particles moving Into the detector, pass through an Ionizing field, and are struck by alpha particles released from radioactive source located on the axis of the tube, The alpha particles move radially outward until they strike smoke particles or molecules of air or water. When struck, a smoke particle or molecule loses an electron and becomes positively ionized.

"In this investigation, a pilot-scale suspension magnetization roasting reactor was introduced and used to enhance magnetic properties of an iron ore. Consequently, the effects of roasting temperature, reducing gas CO flow rate and fluidizing gas N2 flow rate on the magnetization roasting performance were investigated. The results indicate that the hematite and siderite are almost completely converted into magnetite by a gas mixture of 3.5 Nm3/h CO and 2 Nm3/h N2 at roasting temperature of 520 °C. Under the optimized conditions, the magnetic iron concentrate with an iron grade of 60.18% and iron recovery of 90.17% was achieved. The XRD and Fe mineral phase analyses revealed that most of the hematite and siderite were converted to magnetite, and the magnetic properties were greatly enhanced. INTRODUCTION The steel and iron industry in China has rapidly developed in recent years requiring a large quantity of iron ores. Low-grade and complex iron ores are currently the overwhelmingly dominant mineral resource for iron in China. Therefore, China depends on imported iron ore resources heavily, resulting in an increase in the production costs of iron-making and steel-making[1-3]. Using domestic resources to produce a steady supply of high-quality iron ores is an important step toward the sustainable development of the steel and iron industry[4-5]. The iron ore from Jiuquan iron and steel company is abundant and recognized as typically complex iron ore resources in China. Magnetization roasting followed by low-intensity magnetic separation has been proven as the most feasible methods to upgrade refractory iron ore[6-10]. In present research, an innovative roasting technology, namely suspension magnetization roasting, was developed and applied to recover iron from a typical refractory iron ore. Suspension magnetization roasting technique and equipment developed by Prof. Yuexin Han’s Group at Northeastern University (NEU) is an effective way for the utilization of refractory iron ore. The advent of suspension magnetization roasting will, in China and even globally, produce a significant technological revolution in the field of iron ore beneficiation. Based on the previous works, this paper mainly described experiments on the separation and recovery of iron from a complex refractory iron ore by means of suspension magnetizing roasting and low-intensity magnetic separation processes. The purpose of the research is providing a new technology for effective utilization of refractory iron ore. Process parameters that affected the separation and recovery rate of iron were conducted and optimized, and the reaction process was analyzed by XRD and Fe mineral phase analysis."

"Typical mining operating costs can be divided between extraction (30 % to 70 %), comminution (30 % to 50 %) and separation (5% to 20% ). Cornminition process costs, representing an important contribution to mining operating costs, can themselves be divided roughly between energy (50 %) and linerkharge wear (50 %). Developing the ability of predicting mill wear will allow a more accurate estimation of wear costs. However, total media wear in a given ball mill grinding process is a product of three recognized wear mechanisms those being abrasion, corrosion and impact. Further, the contribution to total media wear of each of these wear mechanisms has not been well established. In this paper, a overview of abrasive, corrosive and impact wear mechanisms is made from which an empirical wear prediction procedure is proposed. Further, future directions in wear prediction research is outlined. "In the course of another investigation4 during 1926 and 1927, samples of water collected from a few abandoned coal mines indicated that their drainage was usually lower in acidity than water from active mines in the same locality. In order to determine whether this condition might have a bearing on the advisability of sealing abandoned mines, a number of such mines were visited, samples of drainage were collected, and as much information- as possible was obtained from officials of the mining companies and older residents of the district. A great many of the abandoned mines examined are in this bed, and nearly all of the present active ones are. The Upper Freeport bed is also mined to some extent, and a number of the abandoned mines formerly worked this bed. As only three active mines are now (1927) working the Upper Freeport, the comparison of acidities is necessarily limited. Of these three, one had been idle since 1922 until shortly before it was sampled.The location of most of the mines was already known from previous work, but some of them had to be located by following up streams known to contain acid waters. A sample of the- outflow was collected in self-sealing bottles known as ""citrate bottles"" for the determination of dissolved oxygen by the Winkler method.5 Another sample was taken for the determination of acidity according to standard methods of water analysis.6 Ferrous iron was determined at the mine or very soon after taking the sample by titrating with a standard solution of potassium permanganate in acid solution. The hydrogen-ion value was determined by a standard double-wedge comparator.7From the total acidity values in each sample, which are the most important values, the total iron was calculated on the assumption that acidity as sulphuric acid was due to dissolved ferrous sulphate. This assumption is commonly made for mine waters, but is inaccurate to the extent that free acid is already present, and some of the iron is present as ferric, rather than ferrous, sulphate. The amount of ferrous sulphate may be a rough measure of the extent to which oxygen is lacking within the mine. The permanganate titrations just mentioned showed what part of this total iron was in combination as ferrous sulphate, and the difference .was assumed to be that in combination as ferric sulphate, after correcting for the amount of free acid already formed as shown by the titration values."

La méthode d?exploitation traditionnelle de la mine est le chantier chambre-magasin. Cependant, lors de l?exploitation d?un chantier, nous avons été confrontés à un problème de soutirage. Le minerai abattu est resté accroché à l?intérieur du chantier ce qui nous obligea à soutirer environ 200 wagons, représentant 700 tonnes. Suite à l?ampleur de la situation, nous avons décidé de finir l?exploitation du chantier par la méthode sous-niveau long trou retraité. Cette première expérience de récupération de piliers ayant été réalisée avec succès, nous avons décidé de continuer avec deux autres récupérations de piliers afin de pouvoir augmenter notre expertise autant au niveau technique qu?au niveau économique.

Mining tradition holds that a parallel round underground can not be any deeper than it’s smallest face dimension. ln other words, a mine using a 12’ (3.7 m) high by 24’ (7.3 m) wide room and pillar mine, the deepest pull that can be achieved is plus or minus 12’ (3.7 m). After experience with decking of rounds in a 12’ (3.7 m) diameter shaft to achieve more than 12’ (3.7 m) advance per round, the concept of deepening the pull on horizontal parallel rounds seemed to be a feasible concept. Tests were conducted in a conventional room and pillar metal mine with a round size of 12’ (3.7 m) high by 24’(7.3 m) wide. Standard rounds were drilled with a 16’ (4.9 m) steel as parallel rounds to an average depth of 14.5’ (4.4 m). The average depth of pull on these rounds was about 13’ (4.0 m). Using the available drilling equipment, 20’ (6.1 m) drill steel was used to drill holes to an average depth of 18’ (5.5 m). Five rounds were drilled and shot with a resulting aven$e pull of 16.2’ (4.9 m) or 90 % of drilled depth. Rounds were designed with decked bum cuts to maximize depth of pull in the cut area An innovative method of de&mining drilling accuraq was used to estimate it’s effect on depth of pull in the rounds. This method used a standard automatic 35-mm camera and scaling to determine the average drill deviation for many of the holes in the rounds.

U.S. environmentalists have tended to oppose all new energy developments. Their efforts may be counterproductive because opposition to, say, offshore oil directly leads to the continued use of other energy sources that may have a higher social cost. Rather than attempting to eliminate all pollution from energy production, which would be prohibitively expensive, one should minimize the social cost of energy production for the given demand. Linear programming is used to rank various oils (California State and O.C.S., Gulf of Alaska, Prudhoe Bay, Athabasca tar sands, oil shale and certain foreign crudes) in terms of their social desirability. The objective is to minimize the cost of supplying the California market, subject to resource, sulphur and oil spill constraints. Social desirability is indicated by the inclusion of the oil in the optimal solution and the size of the associated shadow price. the larger the shadow price, the greater the benefits of increased production. The more negative, the greater the cost associated with forcing consumption of that fuel. The environmental shadow prices indicate the size of the trade-off between a particular environmental standard and minimum cost. The trade-offs can be surprisingly large. any reasonable spill standard can be achieved by changing the development pattern. Generally, the further offshore, the smaller is the environmental degradation, but the more expensive is the oil. Foreign oils can be economically and environmentally inferior to domestic oils. Crude from the California O.C.S., San Joaquin Valley end Prudhoe Bay appears a valuable resource, while the Gulf of Alaska, synthetic and foreign crudes appear marginal to submarginal.

Goedehoop Colliery produces 8 million tonnes of coal a year, principally from room and pillar mining, and is situated in the Witbank Coalfield in the Republic of South Africa. The mine has a long and successful record of producing export quality coal from the 2,4 and 5 seams at depths ranging from 20 to 100 metres using modem mining equipment. Following a number of fatalities caused by large and unexplained roof falls in roadways and intersections of supported ground, a review of the roof control system at Goedehoop was carried out. This led in turn to a programme of underground measurements and surveys. This included detailed investigation of the roof falls, horizontal stress mapping, stress measurement and short encapsulation pull testing on roofbolts. These investigations led to a number of important conclusions in relation to the state of stress in the ground, the roof failure mechanisms, standard of rootbolt installation and performance of the roofbolt system. As a result of the work Goedehoop Colliery has made a number of substantive changes to the roof control management system at the mine. These include: 1. A recognition of the importance of horizontal stress as the main factor responsible for roof falls. 2 The forward planning of roof support based on known features which cause the stresses to be elevated. 3. The introduction of a more effective roofbolt system, which can be more easily installed to a high standard. 4. A response system based on risk assessment and monitoring roof movement on a routine basis. The paper describes the knowledge acquired, the conclusions drawn, the changes made and progress to date.

The molybdenum ores currently utilized in China are mostly molybdenum sulfide ores whereas oxidized molybdenum ores, being finely disseminated and difficult to process, have not been exploited and utilized effectively. In this article the beneficiation process of a molybdenum ore occurred in an oxidized ore zone was investigated in order to provide a new way for the development and utilization of the oxidized molybdenum ores in China. The molybdenum mineral in the ore was mainly wulfenite and the associated minerals included barite, limonite, quartz and small amount of cerusite. Limonite in the ore occurred in a crust and honeycomb-like colloidal state and composed the framework for the formation of the other minerals in the ore, which filled the pores in the framework. Wulfenite was mainly fine-grained and occurred in the fine porous crust and honeycomb-like framework. The finely disseminated ore structure made the separation and recovery of the molybdenum mineral in the ore very difficult. On the basis of the mineralogical study of the ore, experiments were conducted to compare the various mineral processing methods for the beneficiation of the ore, including single gravity concentration, single magnetic separation, single flotation, and a combination of high intensity magnetic separation and gravity concentration. The results indicated that with single gravity concentration a molybdenum concentrate containing 5.85 % Mo with a yield of 11.76 % and a Mo recovery of 43.5 % was produced. With single high intensity magnetic separation it was very hard to obtain a molybdenum concentrate product. With single flotation process a molybdenum concentrate containing 7.06 % Mo with a yield of 15.14 % and a Mo recovery of 62.63 % was produced. With a combination of high intensity magnetic separation and gravity concentration a molybdenum concentrate containing 6.46 % Mo with a yield of 11.81 % and a Mo recovery of 42.11 % was produced. In conclusion, compared to the other methods the flotation process can produce more reasonable technological and economical results and is the best process for the exploitation and utilization of the finely disseminated oxidized molybdenum ore.

Nickel oxide granules formed by pyrohydrolysis of a chloride solution, were reduced in hydrogen. Below 400 °C, an incubation period was observed, followed by very slow reduction. In the temperature range from 400 to 600 °C, the rate of reduction increased with increasing temperature and increasing hydrogen pressure. Microscopic analysis showed that in this temperature range the reaction followed the shrinking core model. Above 600 °C, the reduction rate decreased noticeably before suddenly becoming very fast at and above 950 °C. Microscopy showed inner bands of metallization inside the outer metallic rim, indicating partial blockage of the interface between the reacted and un-reacted NiO core. At these temperatures, particle agglomeration and sintering were also found to take place. Surface segregation of sulphur may account for the slow down in reduction rate above 600 °C. From an industrial point of view, reduction should be carried out from 550 to 600 °C with as high a concentration of hydrogen as possible. If sintering and agglomeration are not of any concerns, reduction can be carried extremely fast at about 1000 °C.

"Predicting the performance of the whole mining process is surely the holy grail of predictive simulation. This can be named ‘Integrated Process Prediction’.The objective is to be able to predict the response of the processing chain, from mining to concentration, to changes in the ore type. This can apply to greenfields design – selecting processing options to optimise the overall mine performance within the constraints and aspirations of the greater community and environment; expansion and optimisation of existing plant to deal with changes in economic drivers and ore types; and on-line control – predictive reaction to ongoing changes in ore processing types in an operation.In order to achieve this there are several broad key components that are required: ore characteristics based on in-situ rock properties; a reliable 3D map of the ore body by the key processing parameters; prediction of how the rock fragments and the energy requirement to break it; the ability to predict and track progressive mineral liberation of the rock through the reduction process; the response of rock to separation processes as a function of the rock mineralogical properties. This requires the identification of primary rock properties and associating them with the rock particles as they move along the mining process chain to a concentrate or various forms of waste.This paper looks at the value of this integrated approach; the challenges it poses; the technology and capability we require; and how as a mineral processing community we can address the challenges."

Large Off Highway Trucks operated in this country are generally of Diesel Electric Drive, this system tends to employ the familiar Electric Wheel. A number of fleets now employ the Traction Motor System as an alternative. An investigation is made of the operation of two such fleets. A brief description is given defining the components and their basic functions in each system. Available life history is presented and system reliability, maintainability and operator reaction is examined.
