The German Kaiser is employing the keenest engineering talent of his own and allied empires in his attempt to defeat the world. American employers are paying engineers such attractive salaries that voluntary enlistments of high class technical men in the United-States Army, are below requirements. This deficiency is also probably due in part to the lack of proper information concerning the engineering branch of the service. Few civilians know that it is possible for them to perform in the Engineering Corps almost exactly the same kind of work as that in which they are now engaged. The best results in any organization are obtained only when the energy of every man in it is concentrated along the line for which he is best suited by natural ability, education, and training. It. is more important to have the right man in the right place in our Army, where lives of men are at stake, than it is in any business enterprise. The First Replace meat Regiment of Engineers was organized at Washington Barracks, D. C., on Dec. 14, 1917, with the express idea of accomplishing this. end. Its specific, purpose is to keep all engineering units of the Army at full enlistment strength during the period of this war. This regiment has not only the responsibility of finding men to fill depleted ranks, but it must also fit them to step into the work of trained, efficient and disciplined soldiers. The preliminary work of the recruit is first a thorough training in military drill, for the engineer soldier must be prepared to lay down his shovel and take up his rifle at any time. Infantry drills gradually give way to engineer work and more specific technical training. The. engineer soldiers must know how to tie knots and lashings, to build spar and truss bridges, to construct revetments, dig trenches, place wire entanglements, construct machine-gun emplacements, build pontoon bridges, and to construct roads: They must, also know the methods of demolition, sapping, and mining. Specialized training in lithography, zincography, surveying, mapping, photography, carpentry, blacksmithing, electricity, and machinery, are also given to those qualified for further training in any of these branches. Engineers are called upon to perform such a wide range of work that practically every man with any technical training or mechanical ability can find a place in this organization. Every male citizen in the United States who is physically fit, and between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 and 40, is eligible to join the regiment by voluntary enlistment.

"The enrichment behavior of phosphorus in CaO-SiO2-FeOx-P2O5 slag was studied by making an investigation on the distribution of phosphorous content in slag and 2CaO·SiO2 phase. The research results showed that the existing 2CaO·SiO2 solid particles in slag were the sites for the phosphorous enrichment. The enrichment process of phosphorus in CaO-SiO2-FeOx-P2O5 slag can be recognized as: mass transfer of phosphorus from bulk slag toward the surface of 2CaO·SiO2 particle, superficial dissolution reaction of phosphorus to 2CaO·SiO2 and diffusion of phosphorus through the product layer of 2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O5 solid solution to the inner of 2CaO·SiO2 particle. Compared to the 2CaO·SiO2 particles with larger size (500µm to 1000µm), the completion time of enrichment was shorter for the particles with smaller size (less than 50µm).IntroductionDuring ironmaking and steelmaking, significant amounts of slag are produced. Contrast to the high utilization of ironmaking slag, the treatment of steelmaking slag is more difficult and challengeable, and therefore, an alternative approach is to recycle the steelmaking slag inside the ironmaking and steelmaking process itself. The main limitation to the reuse of steelmaking slag inside the process is that the refining process may be aggravated caused by the phosphorous accumulation if it is used in the blast furnace burden [1]. At the same time, the phosphorous content of steelmaking slag (approximately 1%~5% P2O5) is too low for it to be used as raw material for fertilizer [2, 3]. Moreover, owing to the diminishing supply of global iron ores with low phosphorous content, the control of phosphorus in iron and steelmaking processes has become an increasing problem, and as a result, more amounts of high phosphorus containing steelmaking slag are produced. Therefore, a valuable approach is quite appreciated in which the steelmaking slag is recycled within the ironmaking and steelmaking process and at the same time, the high phosphorus-containing phases in the steelmaking slag, suitable for use as fertilizer can be separated and recycled effectively [4]."

The iron industry produces a considerable amount of tailings per annum, due to its substantial volumes of production. The actual iron ore processing routes require the removal of slimes fractions. In addition to iron oxides and quartz, the iron ore slimes are generally composed of other minerals such as kaolinite and finely dispersed iron hydroxides which impact significantly the performance of reverse cationic flotation. In this study, we propose a two stage processing route that would allow further beneficiation of iron slimes which are not successfully beneficiated, avoiding their disposal as waste. The new amidoamine reagent was tested as a collector in a two-stage route to process two samples of iron ore slimes with d50 close to 10 μm and with high kaolinite content (13 to 20 per cent). The results showed that it was possible to obtain iron concentrate with 66.5 per cent iron and 48.4 per cent mass recovery for a feed containing 48.9 per cent Fe associated with hematite (39 per cent) and goethite (32 per cent). The collector efficiency was improved by mixing with frother for the slimes with higher goethite content of 55 per cent: the concentrate grade was increased from 58.8 per cent to 64.5 per cent with addition of the frother at the expense of reducing operation metallurgical recovery from 87.8 per cent to 75.6 per cent. The efficiency of the process was improved by applying an external energy impact to disperse the fine particles and clean the surface of the minerals. The new amidoamine collector does not require a depressor such as corn starch and may provide the development of new concentration routes for complex ultrafine iron ores. The combination of the amidoamine-based flotation at first stage with high intensity magnetic separation allowed development of optimised two-stage processing routes to valorise the iron ore slimes rejected to the tailings in the actual flotation plant.

Chromite ore is of immense importance for the extraction of metallic chromium and chromium chemicals. The mineralogy and crystal structure of chromite phase are therefore important part of our investigation on the extraction chemistry of chromium species. In this investigation, we have studied the effect of the processing parameters, i.e., the temperature and the oxygen potential on the microstructure and composition of mineral phases formed in the Cr2O3 ?Al2O3 -FexOy -MgO system. In particular the importance of the spinodal decomposition reaction is emphasized in the extraction of chromium as sodium chromite and sodium chromate. Experiments were carried out in order to study the differences in the crystallography of different chromite minerals. Phase equilibria in natural chromite minerals were investigated by calcining chromite mineral in air, argon, and 5% hydrogen + argon atmospheres over a temperature range from 200 to 1200 °C. The effect of the oxygen partial pressure and temperature on the phase constituents of the calcined product has been discussed. The microstructural changes were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the changes in elemental composition in different phases were analysed by electron probe micro analyser (EPMA). The results obtained from EPMA studies were used to calculate lattice parameter of the spinel lattice, and these values were compared with the values obtained from X-Ray powder diffraction data. On the basis of the experimental data, the mechanism of the spinodal decomposition of complex spinel phases is described under the influence of oxygen partial pressure and temperature.

The Ohaaki Rhyolite and the Rautiwiri Breccia are two volcanic units occurring in the shallow and deep parts of the Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system. Alteration of these units by chloride waters results in distinct mineral assemblages that also have distinct whole rock compositions. The Ohaaki rhyolite is altered to an assemblage dominated by quartz, adularia, illite and pyrite as a consequence of silica, potassium and sulfur metasomatism. Locally, these rocks contain up to 0.5 ppm Au. The Rautiwiri Breccia by contrast is altered to an assemblage dominated by albite, adularia, quartz, illite, chlorite and pyrite in association with modest sodium metasomatism. Whole rock oxygen isotope compositions of altered rocks range between 3.3 and 7.5 ë, and are generally lower compared to their fresh rock equivalents having values of 9.5 to 10.6 ë; the result is broad pattern of lower values with increasing alteration intensity.

Application of thermal oxidation is considered a promising technique in reducing fugitive methane gas from ventilation air methane (VAM). A typical thermal oxidiser operates with diluted methane and converts it to less potent greenhouse gases. However, having a thermal oxidiser in the vicinity of the coalmine exhaust shaft is a major safety concern as its high operation temperature increases the likelihood of accidental fire and explosion. The aim of this study is to investigate the application and effectiveness of side venting technique in reduction of deflagration consequences caused by methane gas. To address this importance a series of experiments were conducted on a detonation tube designed and fabricated as part of larger scale VAM Abatement safety project. The experimental work was carried out into two stages: examine the flame and explosion properties in a large-scale detonation tube to get reliable data; and then design and employ a venting system into the detonation tube to verify the effectiveness and performance of the venting against the flame and explosion.Results corresponding to this study show that the side vent duct with venting coefficient magnitude of 37 had a significant influence on methane flame deflagration and the explosion characteristics. The maximum pressure rise at the detonation tube reduced approximately 20 per cent to 32 per cent by applying the side venting duct. Also, the data shows that the venting damped the pressure oscillation after the flame deflagration which eventually reduced the system instability. The object of this paper is to record and interpret field and laboratory observations made by the writers during five years of study of the barite deposits of North Carolina. Deposits of barite are known to occur in three localities in North Carolina (Fig. 1) two of which—the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain —contain material of economic value. The Hot Springs area begins near Bluff, some 6 miles south of Hot Springs, and continues northeast by Stackhouse; a total length of 7 miles. The Kings Mountain deposits lie along a belt that extends from the north end of Crowders Mountain in a southwestward direction, along the east side of this and Kings Mountain, to Kings Creek, South Carolina. The third locality is 3½ miles southeast of Hillsboro, Orange County, a short distance west of the highway leading from Hillsboro to Chapel Hill. It is not known when barite was first discovered in North Carolina, but production from the Hot Springs area began some 50 years ago. The state has never produced large quantities of barite—usually there have been less than three producers—and definite figures are not available, but reasonably reliable estimates indicate a total production of 300,000 tons. From 1901 through 1920 barite mining was on a seemingly prosperous basis and a large tonnage was shipped from the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain areas. With the depression of 1920 the industry began to decline and production practically ceased in 1926. Geology of the Barite Areas In the Hot Springs area barite is found in the Max Patch granite of Archean age and the Snowbird formation of Cambrian age. The Max Patch granite is of two varieties, one gray to whitish and the other red. The gray granite is coarse, at times porphyritic, and composed of quartz, orthoclase and plagioclase feldspar, with a little biotite and muscovite. The red granite is also coarse and differs from the other only in having conspicuous pink and red feldspar. Both varieties have been much metamorphosed and weathered in places, so that they contain secondary

It requires expertise in worker health and safety, behavioral science, finance and economics, as well as human resources management. The locations of mining operations are often in remote corners, and for underground activities, they are unlike anything else in the world. The industry presents those who join it a wealth of opportunities, but often struggles to overcome incorrect perceptions of safety, labor and environmental standards, making it difficult to recruit and retain employees at a time of increased demand for mined materials.

"The research is aimed at solving the problem of enrichment of sulphide ores, counting for more than 40% of the reserves in Russia. The aim of the research is to develop and scientifically substantiate the scheme for processing this type of ores in order to extract fine-dispersed noble metal particles (FNMP). In this work samples of sulfide carbonaceous ore and flotation concentrates were analyzed using complex precision methods of analysis: electron microscopy, spectral analysis with induction plasma, complex thermogravimetric analyzes, etc. Data on the composition of the organic constituent of the samples were obtained with the usage of complex thermogravimetric analysis. The presence of various types of kerogen and bitumen has been established. Experimental studies on the coarsening of FNMP from the initial ore and flotation concentrates using electromagnetic radiation have shown the effectiveness of this coalescence method. The data on the elemental composition of the samples and the amount of FNMP were obtained. Thus, studies on the extraction of FNMP from carbon sulphide ore have shown the possibility of effective usage of combination of electromagnetic action and classical enrichment methods to extract fine particles of noble metals. INTRODUCTION Due to the depletion of free-milling raw materials the involvement of new types of deposits is the strategy of developing mining industry of Russia. The black shale raw materials show interest as a non-traditional source of precious metals since its genetic and positional gold-carbon connection. Muruntau, Sukhoi Log, Bakyrchik, Natalkinsky, Nezhdaninskoye, Olimpiadinsky, Homsen and others are the examples of well-known deposits of the black shale formation [1]. In fact the main gold-dispersed regions of Russia are composed of black-shale strata. Review of literature [2-5] shows that in recent years in almost all deposits of the black shale formation metals of the platinum group (PGM) were detected that significantly increases their practical importance."

The vibration problem is approximately fifty years old. The original investigation of the U.S. Bureau of Mines was begun in 1930. Significant investigation into the problem was done by Crandell, Langefors, et al, Edwards and Northwood, and again by the Bureau of Mines. "Within the energy concept of the German government, the operating time of nuclear power plants was initially extended from about 8 to 14 years. It is planned, however, that every power plant will gradually be decommissioned until 2025 and that simultaneously the amount of renewable energies will successively be expanded. According to the political state, nuclear energy is a discontinued model. Looking at the global energy market, though, an obviously opposed development can be observed. At the moment, 443 nuclear power plants are running worldwide and further 62 facilities are being built. These about 500 nuclear power stations have to be supplied with nuclear fuel right now and in the future. The present paper will describe the worldwide use of nuclear energy, the extraction of the nuclear fuel uranium and in detail the available and predicted resources of uranium. The conclusion of the paper is the statement that uranium as nuclear fuel is no scarce resource but sufficiently available."
