Arc-melted and electron-beam melted tantalum in the cold-worked and the recrystallized conditions showed high strength, good tensile ductility, and excellent notch toughness down to 321°F. Arc-melted material, containing moderate amounts of interstitials, possessed better short-time strength than higher purity electron-beam melted material up to 2000°F. Cold-working substantially strengthened arc-melted tantalum, whereas electron-beam melted material exhibited a low work-hardening rate and possessed better formability characteristics. With identical compositions and microstructures, the mechanical properties of melted tantalum and uacuum-sintered tantalum should be similar. TANTALUM metal usage is increasing rapidly in a number of applications. The outstanding chemical corrosion resistance of tantalum accounts for its applications in chemical processing equipment for severe service conditions and for surgical uses in the medical field. The largest present requirements for tantalum are in the electronics industry, where its special properties are useful in capacitors. The high melting point (5425°F) and inherent ductility of tantalum also suggest that tantalum and tantalum-base alloys might offer an excellent combination of high strength at very high temperatures and good fabri-cability. Pure tantalum has been used in significant amounts in parts requiring high-temperature strength, such as heating elements, reflectors, and heat shields in high-vacuum high-temperature furnaces and in electronic tubes. A few very promising tantalum-base alloys have been developed and are being investigated extensively. The possibilities for tantalum as a high-temperature structural material, either unalloyed or alloyed, will become better defined when more extensive mechanical property data are known. pughl measured the tensile properties of vacuum-sintered tantalum in sheet form for the temperature range of 78" to 1500°K (-321' to 2240°F), and Bechtold reported data obtained at low temperatures.' Drennen3 determined creep and stress-rupture properties of both vacuum-sintered and arc-melted tantalum sheet at 1200 °F. Some additional data on the mechanical properties of tantalum at temperatures up to 5000 °F have been summarized elsewhere.4'5 It is probable that large structural shapes of tantalum, either unalloyed or alloyed, can most readily be produced from ingots prepared by melting. Consequently, the present investigation was undertaken to determine more extensive short-time mechanical properties of tantalum metal consolidated by melting. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Melting and Fabrication—Two tantalum ingots were utilized in this study to obtain information on the effect of interstitial elements on mechanical properties. Both ingots were melted from Union Carbide Metals Co. tantalum dendrites.

The partial isothermal section of the Ti-Cu-Zr system at 750°C has been studied. The crystal structure of Ti2Cu has been detevnlined as tetragonal and when expressed as face-centered tetragonal, a = 4.164, c = 3.611 A, and c/a = 0.867. TITANIUM systems in which ß-titanium decomposes eutectoidally into a and a compound rather readily are known as active eutectoid systems. Recently in active eutectoid alloys based on the Ti-Cu system, and containing additionally A1 and Zr, it has been found that zirconium may produce both moderate weakening and marked strengthening at elevated temperatures.' In order to obtain some insight into the behavior of zirconium, an attempt was made to determine whether compounds of the type Tix Zr and TixZryCu exist. Only results of the Ti-Zr-Cu studies are reported here since data on Ti-Zr alloys will be presented in a separate publication. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were nonconsumably arc melted in argon atmosphere as 15-g buttons, prepared from materials of the following purities: Bureau of Mines electrolytic Ti — Bhn 63 OFHC copper Reactor Grade Zirconium Bhn .C 150 Prior to alloy preparation the electrolytic titanium was premelted to avoid excessive spattering of the charges during melting. The weight losses during melting did not exceed 1 pct of the total weight of the charge. The alloys prepared are listed in Table I together with analyzed compositions. in cases where they were determined. Specimens for heat treatment were wrapped in molybdenum sheet, annealed in argon-filled quartz capsules, and quenched by breaking the capsules under iced brine. About 1 to 2 sec are required to remove the capsule from the furnace, drop it into the iced brine and break it. Because of the insulation effect of the quartz, this delay in quenching should not produce a large drop in temperature. In many instances, no difference or little difference has been detected between the same specimen quartz capsule quenched or directly quenched in vacuum by an impinging stream of water.' Ti-Cu-Zr alloys were homogenized for 48 hr at 825°C prior to annealing at 750°C. Annealing for 5 days at 750°C produced the same results as 11 days at temperature and it was therefore assumed that 5 days was sufficient to establish equilibrium. Titanium-copper alloys were homogenized for 40 hr at 900°C prior to heat treatment for 6 days at 750°C. IN the early part of 1952, under the auspices of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, Horizons Inc. undertook an investigation dealing with the preparation of high purity thorium metal in order to develop an economically competitive production process for this metal based on a recovery of the metal by a fused salt electrolysis, since a survey of the literature of thorium chemistry indicated that electrolytic methods had not received much attention, despite the consideration that electrochemical production methods often offer attractive commercial potentialities. Thorium metal has been prepared by methods which fall into four general categories: 1) reduction of halides or double halides; 2) reduction of the oxide; 3) thermal decomposition of halides; and 4) electrolytic methods. Some of the important results obtained by various investigators since about 1900 in recorded attempts to prepare pure thorium metal are summarized in Table I. A bibliography of pertinent literature is included in this paper. Thorium is strongly electropositive and possesses a great affinity for oxygen and nitrogen. As a result the prospects for the production of high purity thorium from aqueous media or oxygen bearing compounds are remote. The most promising and profitable area of investigation for production of thorium metal lies in fused salt electrolysis. Thorium has been produced previously by this technique from halide salts in fused alkali chloride eutectic mixtures. Until recently, however, the lack of known large uses for thorium has inhibited the investigation of these methods. The basic problem in an investigation into fused salt production methods for thorium is to develop a suitable fused salt system for the economic preparation of thorium. The first portion of the work in these laboratories was a small scale investigation of the electrolysis of potassium thorium fluoride, KThF5, under a variety of conditions. High purity thorium was prepared in this manner, but the process did not appear to offer the simplest and most attractive continuous commercial operation. The work reported here relates to an all-chloride system employing thorium chloride as the cell feed. ThCL4 was produced as an anhydrous material stabilized in molten sodium chloride. This product, further diluted in NaCl, was subjected to electrolysis. The electrolytic process has been studied in cells capable of holding up to 50 lb total salt charge. Ductile, pure thorium metal has been reproducibly obtained in this operation. Considerable experimentation was carried out in the preparation of ThCL as a cell feed free from moisture, oxides, and other impurities. Thorium was cathodically deposited as a coarsely crystalline powder interspersed with residual bath salts. Aqueous procedures for separating and recovering the metal were developed. The thorium metal powder obtained has been evaluated with respect to its hardness, chemical purity, and certain other physical properties. Preparation of ThC1,—Thorium chloride, and the chlorides of some other metals (aluminum, beryllium, tantalum, zirconium, etc.) cannot be obtained from aqueous solution by direct heating and evaporation. Evaporation and heating of a solution of thorium chloride yields a hydrated salt or partially hydrated salt, and finally Tho,. Anhydrous thorium chloride is obtained by forming a hydrated ammonium chloride complex salt in acidified water solution, dehydrating this compound, and finally decomposing the double salt and subliming the ammonium chloride component. Various methods for the preparation of anhydrous thorium chloride, in accordance with this concept, were investigated as indicated in Table I1 from hydrated thorium chloride (ThCl, . 3H2O), and from thorium oxycarbonate (ThOCO,). In the method found most satisfactory for this work, thorium oxycarbonate was dissolved in an excess of concentrated HC1 to give a clear yellow solution. At least 2 mol NH,Cl were added to the solution per mol of contained thorium. Ammonium thorium chloride hydrate was crystallized from solution by cooling and saturation with HC1. The resultant complex, (NH,Cl),ThCl;xH,O, was dehydrated by evaporation at 130° to 150°C and thoroughly dried at about 250°C. The dried ammanium thorium chloride was then mixed with sodium chloride in proportions to form NaThCL or to produce a ThCL4-NaCl mixture with a given thorium content. The ammonium chloride was sublimed off at temperatures above 500°C in an inert atmosphere furnace to give an anhydrous chloride source electrolyte, essentially free of Tho, and of NKC1.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, ore-dressing tests were made on three samples procured by Bureau of Mines engineers from two properties in southeastern Juah County, Utah, each of which is known by the name Black Jack. To avoid confusion, the tests will be described under the names of the owners Kendall-Duvall and the Empire Mines.None of the samples were amenable to ore dressing for the production of high-grade manganese sinter.Ores from the Kendall-Duvall deposit represent an interesting metallurgical phase of low-grade manganese occurrence, as the occurrence of manganese as silicate (braunite) automatically governs the extent to which they can be beneficiated by mechanical methods of treatment. As less than 50 percent of the total manganese was recoverable by complex methods of treatment in a 40- percent-manganese sinter, attempts were made to recover most of the manganese in a low-calcite, intermediate-grade product that might be acceptable for subsequent metallurgical treatment. By selective flotation of calcite and manganese, up to 68 percent recoveries were obtained in plus 20-percent manganese products..No encouragement can be given for successful ore-dressing of Empire ores as represented by samples received for testing, as no products were obtained that would meet minimum marketing specifications. Empire ore contained only 1 percent lime and might be high enough in grade (19 percent manganese) for direct hydrometallurgical treatment."

Introduction Fire assaying is an ancient method of determining the amount of gold and silver in geological materials. Today's commercial, mining, school, and private fire assaying laboratories still use this basic assaying method. One of the primary reagents used to collect gold and silver from the ore is litharge (PbO), or lead oxide. The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) and the Nevada Division of Occupational Safety and Health's (OSH) have a lead standard. It states that a person exposed to airborne lead at concentrations greater than 50 µg/m3 (1.4 µg per cu ft) of air over an eight-hour period has gone beyond the permissible limit for health safety. It is not uncommon to get airborne lead concentrations of 1400 µg/m3 (40 µg per cu ft) in the flux/sampling area or 900 µg/m3 (25 µg per cu ft) around the gas/ electric furnaces during the fusion and cupelling phases. Therefore, any individual working in these areas for more than 30 days per year without proper protection is a likely candidate for lead poisoning. Lead In A Human Lead enters the body as a toxic substance by breathing it into the lungs and upper respiratory tract and by getting lead particles into the digestive system through ingestion. Smoking, eating, drinking, chewing tobacco and gum, or wiping a lead-contaminated hand across the mouth are all potential ways forgetting lead into the body. Lead taken in large quantities can actually kill a person in a matter of days. This is rare, however. The real hazard of lead overexposure is for the unsuspecting person who works in an unsafe lead environment for months or years. This individual can slowly receive damage, sometimes permanent, to the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, blood, gums, and reproductive system. Safe Blood-Lead Level The Lead Standard states that the maximum safe blood-lead level is 40 µg/100 g (40 µg per 3.5 oz) of whole blood. It recommends 30 µg/100 g (30 µg per 3.5 oz) if a person is of child-bearing age. People not working around lead products normally have a blood level of less than 10 µg/100 g (10 µg per 3.5 oz). A person not adequately protected can exceed 40 µg/100 g (40 µg per 3.5 oz) in a few weeks by fire assaying only 100 samples per day per week. Studies show that some individuals have developed lead-related diseases with blood-lead levels less than 80 µg/m3 (2.3 µg per cu ft). Lead Poisoning Symptoms There is a long list of symptoms associated with lead poisoning. The most common are: a prolonged, sweet, metallic taste in the mouth; loss of appetite; anxiety and irritability; weakness and dizziness; nausea and tremors; and insomnia. Preventive Measures Based on the lead standard, a number of preventive measures can be taken to ensure that fire assay laboratory personnel frequently exposed to lead are protected against overexposure. First, the actual lead concentration within the assaying area should be determined. In Nevada, one can contact the Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health for assistance in monitoring any laboratory. The agency will also recommend ways to protect against lead. This agency does the monitoring and provides an educational class on lead safety. This type of agency can be found in other states. Commercial consulting firms are also available, but they are expensive. Regardless of the technique used to determine lead concentrations, it is most likely that the average fire assay area exceeds the 50 µg/m3 (1.4 µg per cu ft) lead concentration limit. This is considered unsafe.

The Bureau of Mines measured the vapor pressures of selected mixtures in the binary systems CdCl2 ?SnCl2, CdCl2 -ZnC12, PbCl2 ?SnCl2, and PbCl2 -ZnCl2 by the static pressure method. These data were evaluated by the second-law (sigma-plot) method. Equations expressing the vapor pressures and the heats and free energies of vaporization as functions of temperature are given.

In the region of the North-Bohemian Coal Basin and its environment, there, in a row of places, are found the accumulations of rocks of the sedimentary and pyro clastic origin, the preliminary composition of those shows the possibility of their being utilized for the production of ecologically sparing natural Fe- and Ti- pigments and filling substances. In many places of the regions of Chomutov and Podborany and near Bilina and also in other places, there are found raw stocks perspective for the preparation of yellow up to ochre-brown, red, brown-red and green dyes. The target of project is the verification of dispensable reserves, their mineralogical composition and chemical and physical attributes, verification of treatment ways of Fe-and Ti-pigments separation (hydrocyclones, magnetic and electrostatic separation) and their stabilization and technological painting attributes for applications in colors, coating and plastic masses, mortar mixtures etc.

Pyrophyllite is a naturally occurring hydrous aluminum silicate with the molecular formula SiO,,AI,,(OH), or, as more commonly expressed, the oxide formula A120,~4Si02~H20. Pyrophyllite is rarely found in deposits as the pure mineral and is often intimately associated with quartz, sericite, kaolinite, and diaspore. These associated minerals, to a large degree, help determine the most appropriate commercial application for a given pyrophyllite ore. Structural similarities plus the generally soft platy nature of pyrophyllite has in the past caused it to be included with talc in applications and production data. The Minerals Yearbook, published annually by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), still reports on talc and pyrophyllite together, although admitting that they do not share the same uses. Pyrophyllite has also at times been considered a clay mineral because of its structure and chemistry. The refractory properties of pyrophyllite have been known for nearly 200 years, but it has only been in the past 60 to 70 years that a variety of applications have been developed to exploit the unique characteristics of this mineral. Worldwide, pyrophyllite is a component of refractories, whiteware, foundry mold dressings, pesticides, paint, plastics, rubber, cement, fiberglass, and soap. Historical Overview The most salient refractory features of pyrophyllite are its low coefficient of thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, low moisture expansion, and good resistance to corrosion by molten metals and basic slags. One of the first recorded uses of this mineral was as firebrick in Japan in the early 1800s. This followed its discovery in 1797 on Mount Omotoyama at the site of the present Mitsuishi mine. In addition to firebrick, sawn blocks of ore were used for carvings and in the manufacture of slate pencils and signature seals. The Mitsuishi mine is still one of Japan's largest. By the mid-1800s, refractories were being made in Japan from roseki (a pyrophyllite-bearing ore) for the construction of metal melting furnaces. The mineral did not get its name until 1829 when R. Herman, testing a sample of supposed talc from the gold-quartz veins at the Berezovo deposit in the Urals, showed that it was actually an aluminum silicate and designated it pyrophyllite. This name was derived from the Greek pur for fue and phullon for leaf, in allusion to the effect of heat in causing separation of the laminae in foliated varieties (Mellor, 1927). The exact date of the discovery of pyrophyllite in the United States is uncertain, but it is believed that the talc and soapstone deposits noted in an 1827 report on the geology of the slate belt of North Carolina were actually pyrophyllite occurrences (Olmstead, 1827). Pyrophyllite was first used in North Carolina on a local basis in the early 1800s. Blocks were sawn and cut for use as stove linings, mantels, chimneys, fireplaces, and gravestones. This was the material of choice because it did not shrink when heated, but cut easily and hardened as it weathered. Pyrophyllite crayons were sold commercially by local gold miners for steel marking and as tailor's chalk from about 1800 until 1922. It was during this period that pyrophyllite was discovered near the town of Hemp (later renamed Robbins), NC. The large quantity of scrap resulting from the sawing of crayons at this deposit prompted the construction in 1921 of a grinding plant. The ore scrap was ground to fine granules and sold to asphalt producers to prevent shingles from sticking together. By the mid-1930s, milled pyrophyllite from North Carolina was also being successfully utilized by the ceramics industry in whiteware for its low cost and ability to shorten firing time. Also during the 1930s, pyrophyllite was first used in kilncar furniture in the United States. Canada was another early entrant in the pyrophyllite business. Mining at the Foxtrap deposit on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland began in 1904, with ore shipped to the United States. Production from this deposit was mostly sporadic in the ensuing years until 1956 when mining began for shipment and captive use in US tile manufacture. This production has remained continuous and still essentially captive to the present. The Foxtrap deposit is currently the sole commercial source of pyrophyllite in Canada.

The design of mine fire emergency plans requires that the contamination of mines by fumes, and the mutual interaction of fires and ventilation systems be pre-calculated. Several computer models were developed by the Bureau of Mines for this purpose during the last decade. The models advanced in sophistication from the transient-state simulation of fume concentrations for the early stages of a fire to the steady-state simulation of airflow rates, concentrations, and temperatures for fully developed fires, and finally to the complete transient-state simulation of fires and ventilation systems. The principal features of these models are described.

Employing gravity recovery for coarsely liberated gold and sulfide ores has potential to lead to a signifi cant reduction in the energy required for comminution and ultimately can have a significant impact on gold processing. Most of the recognised metallurgical tools at our disposal currently have been designed around recovery of relatively finely ground minerals. In order to change the paradigm of fine grind for liberation, a new set of tools need to be recognised that are capable of separations in the coarser size fractions. Some of these tools already exist and some need to be developed but the key is the way in which the fl ow sheets are arranged. A very strong understanding is required in the existing tools and their capabilities before these new flow sheets can be optimised. Only when we understand the existing gaps in technology can we start to fill these positions with new candidates. Many ores when crushed liberate their gold bearing minerals at coarser sizes than current practice would suggest (Figure 1). In order to characterise this response in ores it is necessary to utilise some new techniques in the lab such as gravity separation and ore sorting at the sizes greater than 15 mm followed by gravity recovery on fractions from 15 mm down to 150 ¦m. The most difficult range has been the mid-sized fraction from 4.0 mm down to around 150 ¦m. This is the size range in which many ores show economic liberation starting to occur and coincidentally this is the range in which many commonly used metallurgical processes reach their operational limits due to physical constraints. Examples of these processes are flotation, hydrocyclones and whole ore leach in agitated tanks which are currently the mainstays of the processing fraternity. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. Chemical etching methods for the simultaneous revealing of the tellurium or selenium Phase and the chalcogenide grain boundaries of the alloy systems are given. A tellurium eutectic was found Present in zone-melted ingots. Similarly, a selenium monotectic was present in ingots. In general, the second phase (tellurium or seleniumn) occubies three different sites; viz., along the chalcogenide grain boundaries, as inclusions within the chalcogenide grain, and on the undersurface of the ingot. The detection limit for the tellurium phase is about 1 u in width. THERMOELECTRIC materials based on Group V (bismuth, antimony) and Group VI (selenium, tellurium) elements have aroused considerable interest in recent years in the practical application of thermoelectric cooling. In many cases, a small amount of excess tellurium (or selenium) was added to the material to optimize its thermoelectric properties. Then the question immediately arises as to the number of phases present in the resultant alloy. In the binary systems of Bi-Te, Sb-Te, and Bi-Se, the congruent melting compositions have been reported to be non-stoichiometric and are represented by Bi~Te respectively. It is to beexpected and known that Bi2Te3 and SbzTe3 crystallize from the melt with an excess of bismuth and antimony in the lattice and that tellurium forms a eutectic.~' The same could be assumed to take place in the pseudo binary systems of (Bi,Sb)zTe3 and Bi2(Se,Te)3 as well as in the system studiedby puotinen5 and other workers. Likewise, BiaSe3 crystallizes from the melt with an excess of bismuth in the lattice and selenium forms a monotectic.~ Therefore, in practice, alloys solidified from the melt often contain a second phase (tellurium or selenium) in one region or another of the solid mass even without the addition of excess tellurium (or selenium). ~u~~recht' studied the thermoelectric properties of (Bi,Sb)2Te3 alloys with excess tellurium and simultaneous additions of selenium. He mentioned that the materials show two phases because of the considerable excess of tellurium or selenium. However, he did not report as to how the tellurium or selenium phase was identified. It is generally believed that the presence of an excessive amount of tellurium or selenium phase in the alloy would adversely affect its thermoelectric properties and its uniformity. Consequently, there is a need for a simple method for the identification of the tellurium and selenium phase. The quantity of the second phase present is usually too small to be detected either by chemical analysis or by normal X-ray techniques. This investigation was therefore carried out, first, to devise a simple metallographic method for the identification of the tellurium or selenium phase coexisting with the chalcogenides and, second, to determine the distribution and specific location of the tellurium or selenium phase in the ingots. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials used for the alloy preparations were 99.999 pct pure bismuth, antimony, and tellurium and 99.997 pct pure selenium. The bismuth and antimony were obtained from Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd., while the selenium and tellurium were obtained from Canadian Copper Refiners Ltd. The tellurium was purified further in the laboratory by zone refining. The elements were pulverized in a stainless-steel pestle and mortar. The amounts for the desired composition were weighed out each time on an analytical balance to make up a 100-g sample. Then the sample was introduced into a Vycor ampule (19 by 150 mm), pumped down to a vacuum of 10"5 Torr for 15 min, and sealed off. The ampule was then heated in a horizontal resistance furnace at 800" to 900°C for about 20 hr. During this period the assembly was rocked back and forth several times to ensure good mixing. At the end of the heating period, the ampule was quenched in cold water and then transferred to the zone-melting apparatus described in a previous publications to grow large-size aligned polycrystals. The background and ring-heater temperatures were adjusted to make the freezing solid-liquid interface slightly convex to the liquid. The recorded temperature gradient in the vicinity of the freezing solid-liquid interface was around 15°C per cm. The ampule was moved horizontally at a speed varying from 0.4 to 2 cm per hr so that the ring heater would cover the whole ingot length from end to end. A single zone-melting pass was used for the Bi-Te, Sb-Te, and Bi-Sb-Te ingots. Two passes in the forward and reverse directions were carried out for the Bi-Se and Bi-Se-Te ingots. Six passes in the forward and reverse directions were performed for the Bi-Sb-Se-Te ingot. The zone-melted ingots were found to contain several large crystals, with their basal planes (0001) approximately parallel to the growth axis. Samples of bismuth and antimony tellurides coated with a layer of tellurium, and bismuth selenide coated with a layer of selenium, were prepared for comparison in phase identification. I am not an orator and have never said a word in public during my thirty years' experience in the coal mines of Colorado; but, being requested to speak by our worthy chairman, and as I am deeply interested in the future welfare of this organization, 1 will make an effort to say a few words in behalf of the Rocky Mountain Coal-Mining Institute, which we are about to organize. As 1 understand it, it is the object and intent of this organization not merely to assemble occasionally for the purpose of discussing various problems in coal-mining, and thus to obtain the best possible results in economic operations, but its especial duty will be to devise ways and means whereby accidents in coal mines will be minimized. Figuratively speaking. we are about to plant a tree in the State House of Colorado, and desire its roots and branches to extend over Wyoming on the north, New Mexico on the south. and Utah on the west. So we expect this tree to bear fruit over a vast area. We must remember that the planting of a tree, even in good soil, is useless unless we cultivate, prune, and nurture its development. If we will not do so, the tree will not bear the desired fruit. So, in order to make the Rocky Mountain Institute a success, we must not only start it off in good shape, but we must keep on adding to its strength in various ways, so that it will become a known factor and a recognized power over this broad territory. In other coal-mining states and countries of the world much has been accomplished through similar organizations to reduce loss of life among men engaged in the production of coal, and there is no reason why our institute in the West should not be equally useful and attain the same results. There are many ways by which this organization can be made beneficial to the men engaged, in various capacities, in handling the "dusky diamond." I will endeavor to confine my brief remarks to the necessity of a crusade of an educational nature among three classes of men that are directly and indirectly connected with coal mines. First-We need to educate ouselves. It is amazing how few of our number, holding positions of trust, and having charge of men in and around coal mines, are conversant with our brief mining laws and cognizant of our duties in enforcing them. Going down the line to our company men and miners, I think 1 can safely say that not over 5 per cent of them are in any way familiar with the statutes that have been enacted for their especial benefit and protection. This condition, 1 think, can be, and ought to be, remedied, and. if thoroughly done, the effect in reducing loss of life will soon become apparent. Now, to reach the officers or men in charge I consider an easy matter, which could be accomplished in this manner: Have our general managers or owners of coal properties issue a circular, compelling every superintendent pit boss, fire boss, or other officer having charge of men, to send them a copy of the mining law in their own handwriting every six months. But to come to the masses engaged in coal-mining. to get these men of various nationalities educated in the mining law, will be a difficult task indeed; but I think I have an original scheme that is practical, and which, if put in operation, would work wonders in educating our company men and miners. This plan is as follows: Have every school in every coal-mining district devote one-half hour on Friday afternoon after school hours to the familiarizing of all male pupils between the ages of twelve and sixteen years with the contents of our laws governing coal mines. At the end of each term of school, award small prizes- say, $5, $3, and $2- to those that are best posted, the principal of the school to be the sole adjudicator. Now, someone may say that this is causing extra work to our teachers, with no compensation. In this respect, I will vouch that 95 percent of our teachers will do this work gratis, providing we can show them the benefit of the system. If we go a step farther, and put an incentive before our teachers, probably it would be a good scheme to award a prize-say, $20 or more-for the best set of practical amendments to our mining laws complied by any school and its teachers, judges of the amendment to be members of this Institute and appointed by the President. There is no denying the fact that we need to be educated, and that we should adopt some system that will encourage a knowledge of practical and scientific mining amoung our present forces and the rising generation. The system Nh-Ir was investigated over the complete concentration range by metallography and X-my techniques, using forty one alloys. The solubility limits of terminal and intermediate phases and the solidus temperatures were determined. Five intermediate phases were found: a Nb3Ir, cubic, Cr3O type; tetragonal, ofecr thorhomhic, isostruc-turn1 with (ta-Rh); and a Nhlr3. cubic, AuCu, type. a Nb3lr and a Nbfr3 melt congruently; three eutectic and three pentectic reactions occur. The phase diagram of the Nb-Ir system had not been fully treated in the literature; only surveys of intermediate phases were found.1"5 In this study, the details of the phase boundaries were investigated as well as the crystallography of the intermediate phases. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The experimental procedures such as arc melting of powder compacts, heat treatments, solidus measurements, X-ray, and metallographic observation were identical with those used in the work on the Nb-Rh phase diagram.&apos; They will therefore not be repeated here except where the conditions differed. The purity of the niobium powder was as stated in Ref. 6; the iridium powder of 99.9+ pct purity from J. Bishop and Co., Malvern, Penn., did not contain impurities exceeding 100 ppm, except rhodium (200 ppm). The melting points and vapor pressures of both elements are very similar. This fact contributed to a very small weight loss on melting and facilitated preparation of homogeneous alloys. As shown in Ref. 6 for Nb-Rh, no oxygen pick-up exceeding 200 ppm had to be considered; this was regarded as valid also for Nb-Ir. A total of forty one alloys were used in the determination of the phase diagram; their concentrations are shown in Fig. l, which presents the phase diagram. The concentration limits as determined by the weight-loss method averaged <0.2 at. pct, and never exceeded 0.5 at. pct. Heat treatments were carried out as described in Ref. 6. Depending on the concentration, only tantalum, tungsten, or iridium containers were employed, avoiding oxide crucibles altogether. Alloys from 0 to 25 and from 65 to 100 at. pct Ir were homogenized at 2095°C for 15 hr, intermediate compositions from 25 to 65 at. pct Ir for 65 hr at 1780°C. A typical annealing-time schedule is presented in Table I. Solidus points were measured as described in Ref. 6 with the modification that samples rich in niobium were held between pieces of tantalum foil and samples of high iridium concentrations were held between rhenium platelets or in iridium wire. After each run it was ascertained metallographically that no reaction with the holder had occurred. Rhenium was selected as holder material after it had been shown in separate tests that the melting points of Re-Ir alloys rise continuously from 2440°C. Metallographic examination was carried out as described in Ref. 6, and the same procedure and etchants were used successfully. While metallographic discrimination between a Nb3lr and o was easily possible, X-ray diffraction was necessary to separate al and ct2. X-ray powder patterns were taken and evaluated as for Nb-Rh6 yielding the error limits indicated in Table 111, to be introduced later. For the determination of the invariant reactions and phase boundaries, the same techniques as for Nb-Rh6 applied. The general accuracy of invariant concentrations is regarded as somewhat higher than for Nb-Rh due to the small slope of most solvus lines.

"Using a paste-like slurry as a filling from the ground surface to the goaf, artificial pillars can be built in the cavity goaf to support the goaf roof to prevent roof collapse and ground subsidence. If the accumulation laws of paste-like slurry are known well, the filling technology can be optimized. The laws can establish the foundation for finding out the best methods for building artificial pillars and filling technology. In order to understand the accumulation laws of paste-like slurry in the cavity goaf, Aeolian sand with wide distribution in northwestern China was selected as aggregate, and Portland cement was used as cementitious material to prepare a paste-like slurry. A test model of the cavity goaf was built to simulate the filling process by pump from the ground surface to the goaf to study accumulation laws of the paste-like slurry. The results show that the whole process of expansion and accumulation of the paste-like slurry could be divided into stages: free expansion, fill tightening expansion, and stable expansion. The angle of repose of the accumulation body of the paste-like slurry is constant in the stage of stable expansion, and it is the final angle of repose of the accumulation body. The angle of repose of the accumulation body is highly relevant to the slump of the paste-like slurry, and it is unrelated to the distance between the floor and roof. Under certain conditions of the cavity goaf, reducing the slump of paste-like slurry is one of the effective ways to obtain cost-effective pillars.INTRODUCTIONA large number of cavity goafs of coal mines were left in northwestern China; they were formed in the mining process by room-pillar or strip mining. Safety coal pillars were used to support the roof to keep long-term stability in the goaf, so the ground subsidence was not obvious (Fu, Deng, and Zhang, 2011; Xie, 2014). With gradual weathering, destruction of coal pillars, or additional load from ground surface buildings and structures, there could be a risk of instantaneous collapse of the roof in the goaf. This would affect the safety of existing structures on the ground and adjacent mines (Qu et al., 2017; Li, Xiang, and Jia, 2011; Tan, Guo, and Zhao, 2016; Tan et al., 2017). For disaster prevention of the falling cavity goaf, the current common practice is full filling (Hu et al., 2008; Liu, Zhu, and Huang, 2015; Pan and Wu, 2010). However, for buildings and structures with lower deformation requirements, full filling is excessive. For example, it is acceptable for goaf treatment under general roads and industrial sites to control the maximum deformation and keep the deformation continuous (Liu, 2011; Liu, 2012)."

Research into the control of diesel particulates (DP) has been. conducted by BHP Coal for more than 7 years. Personal monitoring of employee exposures (n = 480 full shift samples) conducted at nine underground coal mines has indicated that the exposure of the workforce ranges from less than 0.1 to 2.2 mg/m3 of DP dependent on job type and mining operation. Approximately 50% of the mass of DP captured is elemental carbon (EC) which is the species currently being considered by some international regulatory authorities as the exposure standard. Five technologies for controlling DP were investigated in a combination of studies conducted in an above ground simulated tunnel, in a special controlled section of underground mine roadway and validated by application in standard coal mining operations at Tower Colliery. Tests conducted under controlled conditions indicate that dependent on the type of fuel in use, the introduction of low sulphur fuels can reduce DP levels in return airways by up to 50% and in actual mining situations a reduction of 20% can be achieved in exposure of the workforce. In addition, subjective responses from the workforce indicate that exhaust emissions from low sulphur fuels provide lower irritation and a more pleasant aroma. The use of water filled scrubber tanks reduces the level of DP emissions by 25%. Chemical decoking of engines resulted in a reduction of 20% in DP in return airways. A commercially available non-flammable disposable dry exhaust filter constructed from synthetic organic fibres with an operational lifetime in excess of 20 hours was found to reduce DP exhaust emissions by 80%. Investigations have indicated that the use of increased ventilation to control DP levels particularly in multiple vehicle situations does not follow a simple dilution factor and in some instances compliance with current regulatory requirements may not produce the required reduced exposure levels. The results from single component control strategies provide considerable reduction in exposure to DP, however the most efficient and cost effective control methodology is the use of a combination of individual systems modelled to operations conducted at each mine.

W. C. MATTESON (communication to the Secretary*).-The criticism and question raised by Arthur Knapp regarding the standardization of nomenclature is most important. Faulty rock classification-is generally the result of carelessness or ignorance on the part of the driller. Two remedies might be suggested. In a field where several large companies are operating on an extensive scale, a geologist from each concern might be assigned to superintend the gathering of well-log data and the classification of samples. The geologists from the several operating companies might then combine their data, which would doubtless give valuable information to all interested parties. At present, coordination is not a big factor, unfortunately, but the time will come when conservation will demand such systematic coordination on the part of competing companies. The second remedy lies in instructing and educating the driller to a thorough understanding of the importance of an accurate log and correct classification of the various formations. The writer does not agree with the statement that "90 per cent. of the logs as taken today are absolutely worthless to any one but the one who has taken the log." While mistakes in nomenclature often occur, the driller is generally able to classify the important water-, oil-, and gas-bearing formations with a fair degree of accuracy. Such information is often sufficient to permit accurate correlation and also constitutes valuable data for projection purposes. It must be borne in mind that to attempt to use well-log data in a strict scientific sense of accuracy is impracticable and impossible. A broad interpretation and a comprehensive knowledge of the practical limits of such&apos; information are essential in applying it successfully. Even experienced geologists do not always agree on rock classification. The question as to what constitutes correct nomenclature should receive the earnest and immediate attention of geologists, operators, and producers. Although standard textbooks on geology give correct definitions and descriptions of the general rock species, such textbooks fail to develop the subject in sufficient detail for the work under consideration. Why is it so difficult? Why are there differences throughout the resources industry in how reconciliation factors are reported and calculated? Why is there no standard formula to use? These are common questions asked when mining companies try to compare reconciliation results across operations or attempt to undertake internal or corporate governance reporting processes. For many mining companies the calculation of reconciliation factors is often a very time and resource intensive part of mandatory reconciliation reporting. Some major mining companies, that move millions of tonnes of material per annum, dedicate full time resources to the calculation of reconciliation factors. The willingness of these companies to set aside resources demonstrates the value that operations place on good reconciliation reporting. Reconciliation is about measuring the variance between two like measures at different points along the mining sequence. It can be undertaken between predictive models, forecast plans and actual measured performance. Calculations are used to derive a variance between two sections within the mining sequence, with the result being commonly known in the resources industry as a æfactorÆ. Mining companies use the calculation of reconciliation factors as key performance indices (KPIs) to provide a æhealth checkÆ of their operation, with variances often pointing to issues either with the accuracy of the original estimate or the quality of the measurement being used in the comparison. There are many reconciliation factors that can be calculated and reported. This paper will set out, clarify and provide a recommended standard means of calculating each specific factor that, where adopted by a company, will ensure compliance with the international reporting codes, such as JORC. Using case studies from Rio Tinto Group (Rio Tinto) and BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (æBMAÆ), and the authors experience across a wide range of mine sites, the outline of a generic solution for tracking a parcel of material from the pit through to the port along with appropriate reconciliation factors is provided. The intention of proposing standardised reconciliation factor terminology and methodology is to provide the foundations of a system to enable communication and comparison across different commodities, companies and mines sites.
