The enlarged Mitsubishi process in Naoshima has been in steady operation since. May 1991. However, the sulfuric acid plants have been in operation for more than 30 years. The acid plants were modernized between 1999 and 2001 by renewing some of main equipment such as the drying tower and gas heat exchangers, and introducing new technology. At the same time, as an electric energy saving measure, the electric power consumption in the sulfuric acid plant was vastly improved by decreasing the volume of gas treated the installation of low temperature activity catalyst in the 1st pass of the converter and optimization of main gas blower runner. Furthermore, last year, the oxygen plant was replaced and enlarged, and anode production increased from 240,000 to 280,000 tonnes per year with an associated increase of sulfuric acid from 550,000 to 660,000 tonnes per year. This paper describes these recent improvements in the acid plant at Naoshima smelter.

Silicon carbide (Sic), produced by heating rice hulls to elevated temperatures, contains a mixture of beta crystalline silicon carbide whiskers, particles, and unreacted carbon. The silicon carbide whiskers are 0.5 micron in diameter and 50 to 100 microns in length and have been found useful for reinforcing metal and other composite materials. The carbon can be removed by combustion, but this makes separation of the silicon carbide whiskers from particles difficult and a high grade whisker product cannot be made. However, a clean, high grade SiC whisker product can be obtained from the pre-burned converted rice hulls using physical separation processes that are based on differential wetting. Recovery of Sic whiskers from the pre-burned material was found to exceed 90%. A modification of the froth flotation process developed during this study is now being used commercially to separate silicon carbide whiskers and particles and to recover a high grade whisker product.

As shafts and tunnels move deeper levels in underground mining, development planning becomes more complex. The most serious problem is the aggravation of environmental conditions due to the imposition of higher-than-natural temperatures upon exposed strata. Since such a problem is a potential hazard to health, safety, and production, the authors have developed a system of computer-derived ambient-air temperature data for every major point of an underground mine under a given set of conditions. This system is comprised of two subsystems: 1) Ventilation network analysis, 2) Estimation of air - current temperature. The former is based on the Hiramatsu-Oka method, an improvement of the Scott-Hinsley method. The Hiramatsu-Oka method allows fast convergence and consideration of various fan characteristics. The latter subsystem considers heat radiation from strata, and the humidity. In several tests conducted at Besshi and Sazare Mines of Japan, the computer-derived data correlated with actual conditions.

INTRODUCTION The Northern Great Plains has 16 billion tons of strippable lignite (1). Presently, 15 million tons per year are mined; essentially all is used for generation of electrical power. In the future, additional large quantities will be consumed in the production of gaseous and liquid fuels. A major consideration in design and operability of power stations and conversion plants is the nature of the ash or inorganic constituents of the lignite used. These inorganic components cause fireside fouling in boilers, exert a catalytic effect in liquefaction and gasification, and contribute to particulate and SO2 emissions. Ash fouling on fireside boiler tubes cause reduced heat transfer and gas flow which limits boiler performance. Severe fouling can result in shutdown of the boiler. A comprehensive test program in both pilot plant and field studies at the Grand Forks Energy Technology Center (GFETC) has shown that ash fouling increases with increased sodium content of low-rank coals (2). This paper discusses the use of a reacting CFD model to determine chalcopyrite kinetics in a drop tube furnace and to predict the reaction of a chalcopyrite concentrate in the reaction shaft of an industrial smelter. Reacting CFD codes can be applied to determine the consequences of the interaction of gas with particles and therefore improve the ability to derive kinetic parameters that take into account the temperature and oxidation histories that different particles will see. This paper describes the application of such a model to derive improved kinetic parameters for the pyrolysis and oxidation of chalcopyrite. The reaction shaft model includes the effects of turbulent fluid mechanics, entrained flow mixing, turbulent particle dispersion, heterogeneous particle reactions, radiative and convective heat transfer, and' surface and bath deposition rates. Particle reaction and composition characteristics are predicted as a function of particle trajectory and deposition and are used to aid in evaluating shaft performance.

SINCE the observations of Heyn,1 relative to the embrittlement of copper after having been heated in hydrogen, this subject has received considerable attention from later investigators. The published works of Archbutt2 and of Bengough and Hill3 give the reasons for this embrittlement-the formation of steam by the reaction between cuprous oxide and hydrogen. From Ruder,4 Pilling,5 Moore and Beckinsdale,6 Bassett and Bradley,7 and from Smith8 can be obtained quantitative data concerning the action of hydrogen and other reducing gases on copper samples having various oxygen contents. This problem has been discussed from a practical standpoint by Fuller9 who calls attention to some of the instances of this embrittlement encountered in the manufacturing field. The examples he cites may be considered typical cases of copper embrittlement which were incident to the process of manufacture. In many cases, such difficulties are overcome by changes in the manufacturing process.

Mineral production was of minor importance to the country's economy, and Bangladesh was not a ranking world producer of any mineral commodity in 1980. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited, and reserves were sufficient to allow a significant increase in its use. A greater proportion of the domestic heat and electrical energy needs could be filled by increased production and distribution of natural gas. Also, the export of natural gas was feasible either by pipeline to India or in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Some nonmetallic minerals could be developed, as well as coal and peat, given sufficient capital investment. Bangladesh's strongly agricultural economy made fair progress in 1979.80.1 The major harvest of November-December 1979 turned out to be better than had been anticipated after an early drought left poor planting conditions. THE binary aluminum-silicon alloys have certain characteristic advantages which are now well known, and these alloys have come into considerable use during the past several years.1 Their field of application has been limited to a certain extent, however, by their low yield point and hardness, low endurance limit, and relatively poor machining characteristics. These properties are improved by the addition of copper, and the ternary aluminum-silicon-copper alloys constitute an important class. The addition of copper decreases the corrosion resistance of the aluminum-silicon alloys and increases specific gravity. Magnesium is a hardening addition which seems to have relatively little effect on corrosion resistance, and which, of course, reduces specific gravity. The object of the work described in this paper was the development of alloys and heat treatments for the production of sand castings and permanent-mold castings having substantially all the advantages of the binary aluminum-silicon alloys together with mechanical properties improved to a degree permitting wider application.

Almost beyond doubt, the most important contribution to the assaying of copper yet made, is that of Mr. Eustis (Bans., xi., 120) on the " Comparison of Various Methods of Copper Analysis," which indicates in a manner for which the assayer cannot but feel grateful, how a copper sample ought to be treated from the moment it enters the laboratory until the copper is finally weighed. Admitting, as the present writer is inclined to do, that this paper establishes, as the official standard, the method of electrolysis, we may note as one of the few details which it does not finally fix, the kind of battery most desirable for precipitating the copper upon platinum. In this respect each assayer appears to be a law unto himself, while all feel more or less " shaky " as to the results. Classsen seems to suggest a remedy when he directs the measuring of the -gases liberated by the battery employed. But, in fact, that measure is not a constant in the Bunsen elements which he prescribes for copper determination. Furthermore, measuring gases necessitates more machinery and labor than the average assayer has a stomach for. It is, however, but just to Classen, to whom we owe so much, to reeall that he wrote more especially for students in the schools.

In recent years there has been a trend among mining companies to diversify exploration and development away from the countries that have dominated mining activity for the latter half of this century. With some exceptions, this trend is accelerating and is a function of the recognition that many parts of the world, with no previous exposure to modern exploration, are endowed with considerable mineral potential. In addition coincident with changing political and economic circumstances, many countries have recognised the benefits of attracting international mining investment and have radically changed policies, fiscal and legal regimes so as to encourage exploration and mining. Some countries, however, have not readily accepted mining for cultural or social reasons and have yet to make effective changes to mining legislation. For historical reasons, other countries may have little or no direct experience of western economics, nor may they fully recognise the need for stability and competitive fiscal and legal systems to attract foreign investment. Not all ventures in new countries have been commercial successes and there have been some lamentable and recent lapses from grace. In opening, I want to thank the program committee and members of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME for the opportunity to speak to you. Various chapters of AIME this past year have expressed interest in the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act. We want to see that interest continue, because the reason for the legislation was the safety and health of the industry's workforce. The Department of the Interior was directed by the Congress to administer the provisions of the Act and is therefore held directly accountable for the success or failure of its intent. We intend to see it succeed. Among other things, the Act does provide for education and training under Section 15. This provision has been implemented and is expanding. However, the responsibility of my office is inspection and enforcement and that is my subject today.

Mt Todd lies towards the south end of the Pine Creek Geosyncline, sandwiched between the Cullen Batholith and the Edith Falls Basin, in an area of regionally metamorphosed sandstones, siltstones and shales. The Batman deposit, some 3 km west of Mt Todd is a sheeted quartz vein system hosted within greywackes of the Palaeoproterozoic Burrell Creek Formation (Finniss River Group). The gold-bearing quartz veins, trending 010¦-020¦ and dipping 60¦-70¦E, are commonly 0.5 to 5 cm wide and occur at intervals which are from 10 cm to 1 m apart. Gold tends to be restricted to the quartz veinlets and immediately adjacent country rock. Grade Control utilises two 4 m 'collar' samples which are collected from each 8 m production blasthole. The irregular distribution of the quartz veins and erratic gold mineralisation has resulted in a disseminated 'salt and pepper' type of gold occurrence, with only a poorly defined footwall. Delineation of ore and waste blocks for mining uses an approach which combines the smoothing effect of kriging with a pragmatic view of the raw data. Large ore blocks with simple geometry help to minimise mining dilution, reduce block variance and give good reconciliations to interpreted ore tonnes and grade. Daily mine face advance is reported against truck counts and provides continual comparison with budgeted production. All data processing uses Gemcom software, together with Lotus spreadsheets.

Prior to 1903, the world's supply of sulphur was primarily from surface deposits in Sicily. The discovery of the first salt dome sulphur deposit in 1867 and successful development of the Frasch process for recovering the sulphur resulted in a large part of this essential element being supplied from these mines since 1920. Although the basic process is the same today, engineering and technological developments have evolved to allow its application under many adverse conditions. These and other challenges for the industry in today's environment will be discussed in the paper.

"The Clarabelle Mill rock tailings have the potential to generate sulphuric acid through chemical and biological oxidation of sulphide minerals. Current rock tailings assay between 0.80 -1.40 %S, with sulphur occurring principally as coarse pyrrhotite. Acid generation within the tailings area can be substantially reduced by segregating pyrrhotite rich tailings in a submerged storage area and by depositing only low sulphur rock tailings in exposed areas. Laboratory tests confirmed that low sulphur tailings could be produced by flotation at reduced pH with a small xanthate addition. A plant test was conducted to evaluate the production of low sulphur tailings in conjunction with INCO's continuing commitment to environmental protection and progressive decommissioning of the metallurgical site.During the plant evaluation, approximately 5% of the mill rock tailings were reprocessed in a line of 100 tt3 Denver flotation cells. Tailing grades below 0.40% S were easily achieved through operation at pH 6 -7, with xanthate addition (dosages up to 0.02 lb/ton) and 10 -15 minutes of nominal retention time. Froth depths between 1 -3 inches combined with relatively liberal amounts of frother were required to pull the lightly mineralized froth into the concentrate which averaged 11% sulphur and less than 5% mass recovery. In addition, three field lysimeters were each filled with two hundred.ton bulk samples of low sulphur tails (0.35% S), standard rock tailings (0.98% S), and mill total tailings (2.30% S) for long term monitoring. The implications for full scale plant design, tailings area decommissioning, the possibility of increased nickel recovery and preliminary field lysimeter data are discussed."

O presente trabalho avalia a influência de um tratamento térmico de solubilização na retenção do crescimento de grão de distintas ligas de alumínio (1200 e 8011), ao submeter estas ligas, após serem processadas por uma técnica de deformação plástica severa (Laminação assimétrica), a um tratamento térmico de recozimento para recristalização com tempos distintos de encharque. As caracterizações microestruturais e mecânicas das amostras em estudo foram avaliadas por Difração de Raios-X (DRX), análise de dilatometria e ensaios de dureza Vickers. Após o estudo realizado, concluiu-se que as ligas 1200 e 8011 na condição solubilizada apresentaram indícios de “revezamento” entre as orientações (111) e (200) no que diz respeito ao crescimento do tamanho de grãos e ao aumento da fração volumétrica dos grãos associados a essas orientações.

A. W. S. Schumann The first reason for todays success lies in the very high standard which was set by our speakers today and I think that we owe a very special vote of thanks to Messrs P. M. C. Wilson, A. A. Oakes, M. J. Deats, A. C. Coetzee, R. E. Burnton and J. G. Ferguson. This, however, cannot account for the fact that there was a tremendous response even before anyone knew who was going to speak or what they were going to speak about. I suggest that the response was enthusiastic because people expected a more informal gathering with a greater opportunity for feedback, for an exchange of views and for questions and answers. The very popularity of the idea has defeated its own ends to some extent. This gathering is too big and many people must have been left with questions unanswered. Possibly one should arrange for a number of meeting places-there are many in the Chamber and the surrounding mining houses-and then have separate meetings in the morning with joint reporting session in the afternoon. Alternatively, we could have a symposium after the colloquium, using Webster's definition of a symposium as as 'a drinking party of merry fellows'. We all know that it is easy to discuss mining into the small hours. Obviously one cannot summarise todays papers and discussions, but I would like to make a few comments on technical matters and after that I would like to speak for a moment about what I see as major trends or tendencies which arise from discussions of this nature. Regarding the question of placing a village on a mine or away from a mine, I would mention that there is quite a body of literature on the adverse sociological effects on the development of children in any community in which the great majority of parents share the same occupation. It is something to be avoided if possible. We discussed the concept of the moving stockpile. If this is proved to be successful, it could save a considerable amount of money for Escom who could then avoid the construction of very large and costly staithes which are now regarded as parts of power stations. One does not see why both a moving stockpile and a staith should be necessary. By the way, speaking of Escom, I see that Mr Bob Scott is here; he has stopped pulling my leg by saying that we sell stone to Escom; perhaps someone has told him that if this is true, it must be the cheapest stone you can buy in this country. My next point relates to the use of epidiascope. It struck me again that this instrument which provides a visual image to accompany your message, can be very effective if it is properly used. These papers speak of a great deal of hard work which went into their preparation, and one really feels that the authors should have taken a few minutes more to prepare their drawings specifically for the epidiascope. There should be nothing on the drawing which is not necessary to illustrate a particular point and there should be nothing on the drawing which is not visible from the back of the hall. This is the first Presidential Address given to the Nottinghamshire Branch of The Institution following the merger of the Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire Branch of The Institution of Mining Engineers (IMinE) and the Midland Branch of The Institution of Mining Electrical and Mining Mechanical Engineers (IMEMME). I intend to review the formation of the individual institutions as well as what has been achieved by mining related institutions over the years and finally I intend to look to our future.

Generally pillars in the Southern African hard rock tabular underground mining environment are designed using either empirical pillar design formulae or numerical modelling (analytical) methods utilizing the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. However, none of the pillar design methodologies employed takes cognizance of weak layers either within the pillar material or in the immediate foundation of the pillar. Over the past few years, the presence of a weak layer either within the pillar material or within the immediate foundation of the pillar has resulted in the closure of one platinum mine (Everest Mine), closure of one chrome mine (Wonderkop Chrome) and large-scale instability in a couple of chrome and platinum mines in South Africa and Zimbabwe. A study has been initiated to better understand the failure mode and strengths of the pillars where pillar failure associated with weak layers occurred. Owing to the infancy of the study into the failed pillar strength and failure mechanism, the purpose of this paper is to highlight the circumstances that led to the collapse of mining sections and a shaft, and the difficulty associated with designing pillars in the Southern African chrome and platinum mining operations.

Giving the keynote address in the final session of a conference dealing with closely related topics has a disadvantage in that much of what can be said has been said. It also has an advantage, however, because it presents the speaker with the opportunity to integrate and analyse the material presented by the various speakers. I would like to look to the near future in Australia and the United States of America, to the risks, problem areas, and changes of a rapidly evolving post-industrial era-an era we are beginning to experience where industry no longer 'calls the tune'. We miners have been quick to point out and emphasize, that ours is a 'high-risk' industry in the world of business and commerce. Yet, clearly those who have survived, and been successful, have learned to anticipate and cope with risk and change. This ability has been a 'distinguishing feature of the industry's leaders who, in market studies and commodity selection, exploration and development, mine planning, metallurgical pro- cessing, and general administration and operation 1. identify areas-of risk or inevitable change, 2. analyse, test and quantify those factors of risk or change, and 3. design methods, systems, equipment to eliminate, moderate, or control or economically compensate for predicted risks or changes.

Skarns typically are zoned and the deposit- or district-scale zonation pattern is an important tool in exploration for skarn deposits. Zonation in individual deposits has been described in many publications, and the general zoning patterns have been summarised by Einaudi, Meinert and Newberry (1981), Meinert (1997), and Meinert, Dipple and Nicolescu (2005). Although zonation is present in most skarns as the result of a basic process of transferring heat and fluids from magmas to wall rocks, the specific zoning pattern in each skarn may vary greatly. For example some zones may be missing entirely or multiple zones may be telescoped. Such variations can be caused by several factors including depth of formation, magma composition, timing of the exsolution of magmatic aqueous fluids, redox state of the magma and redox state of the wall rocks. To use zonation as a predictive tool in skarn exploration, all the controlling factors have to be considered. In this study, we discuss some of the factors that may affect the zoning patterns in Ca skarns. Magnesium skarn has dramatically different mineralogy and is not discussed here.
