Alunite [KA13(S04)2(OH)6] is a promising non-bauxitic aluminum resource, the domestic reserves of which are estimated to be 800 x 106 tons at 35 percent alunite. The major gangue mineral associated with alunite is quartz. The thermochemical process that has been developed for treatment of this ore does not provide for the initial removal of gangue prior to processing. In this regard, it may be desirable to concentrate the ore to gain significant technical and economic advantages. Experimental results indicate the effectiveness of an oleic acid flotation technique and exemplify the problems encountered in fine particles processing. These results show that the quality of separation studied as a function of temperature, collector addition, and depressant addition is dependent on the degree of liberation achieved during size reduction. At coarse grinds the quality of separation was limited by the presence of locked particles while for finer grinds where more extensive liberation is achieved, better separations were obtained. The degree of liberation for each size interval was determined by an SEM/energy dispersive x-ray technique and found to be independent of the extent of size reduction, suggesting that liberation occurs by indiscriminate fracture and not by detachment. Up to 89 percent liberation was realized for a minus 400 mesh grind. Under these circumstances, the quality of separation appears not only to be limited by the remaining locked particles, but, also, by contamination of the alunite concentrate with fine quartz gangue (< 2µm). The best separation for the minus 400 mesh grind was a rougher recovery of 88 percent with a grade of 65% alunite at 50°C.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the three significant coal beds in Greene County, Pa. It is one of a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for the production of metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 12.5 million tons of coal was produced in Greene County in 1956, of which approximately 10 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 8 cleaning plants. The Bureau of Mines has estimated that 3.5 billion tons of recoverable coal remained in the county as of January 1, 1954.

A total of 117 slope stabilization drilled piers were installed as part of a major hillside revitalization project. The 110-million dollar development, known as Stratford at Kenwood, included an 18-story upscale senior residential tower, a 3-story healthcare building, and 4-story condominium buildings, offering approximately 580,000 square feet of living space with panoramic views of Downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. In an effort to establish a flatter hillside plateau for the new 4-story condominium and to create a cut and fill balanced jobsite environment, an 800-foot long row of drilled piers and a 600-foot long multi-tiered shear key system was used to terrace existing 1.5H to 3H: 1V steep slopes and support the new fill. These slope stabilization features reduced the amount of spoils needed to be wasted off-site and mitigated the risk of slope instability. An ODOT/FHWA research indicated that spacing of stabilization piers and necessity of top-connecting elements are highly dependent on pier diameter, spacing, soil type, depth to potential failure surface, surcharge loads, and pier deflection. Due to pre-existing deep buried swales, various load combinations, and the complex mechanism of soil arching effects between adjacent piers, both analytical and numerical computer modeling was performed to estimate the loading on each pier. New generation multiplexed, 3-Dimensional, Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System based inclinometers were installed between selected piers to confirm the pier design, and monitor the fill placement, as well as long-term slope stability.

MINERAL Economics is the most recent profession to be recognized as a separate division of the mineral industries. It has originated from the increasing awareness of the importance of the economic aspects of industries concerned with discovery, extraction, and utilization of minerals. It is concerned with the interrelated fields of economics and technology. The individual trained in economics alone cannot qualify. The curriculum in the School of Mineral Industries at The Pennsylvania State College was approved in May 1946, and enrollment begun in September of that year. Due to the transfer of advanced students from other courses, particularly metallurgy and electrical engineering, it was possible to graduate the first seniors in June 1947. The next class was graduated in February 1948. From experience derived from placing these graduates in industry, and from information supplied by prospective employers, valuable data have been obtained in the organization and operation of the course of study.

"The mineral processing research community has devoted enormous efforts to the modelling of mineral separators over the last 50 years. While many efforts have been made to use only fundamental physics as a basis for the models, fluid flow patterns in separators are not simple while the motion of particle swarms through fluids is extremely complex.One of the simplest separators is the sluice, in which separation takes place in a flowing film a few millimetres thick. The particles are suspended by turbulent eddies and motion relative to the fluid takes place in so-called hindered settling mode.In an effort to test the extent to which fundamental fluid mechanics can provide a prediction of particle separation, a study on a simple parallel-sided sluice has been carried out using glass beads at various particle concentrations and flow rates.The actual particle separation taking place was compared to predictions made by first describing the fluid flow by a modified ‘law of the wall’ model.Particle concentration distributions were described using Hunt’s sediment transport model, assuming the particle eddy diffusion coefficient to be the same as that for the water. Settling velocities were calculated using either the Richardson and Zaki or Brauer and Thiele models. The latter takes into account particle size and density distributions and solids volumetric concentration.The resulting predictions of particle separation are remarkably good, even though the model does not model the local settling velocity in the slurry."

THE following really forms the second part of, or a sequel to, a paper, &quot; Ventilating Metalliferous Mines: a Method of Attack,&quot; read before the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in May, 1920. In that paper the writer advocated a consideration of the question of ventilation in metal mines from a different aspect to that &apos;which had hitherto prevailed locally. Various factors regarded as having an important bearing on the subject were set forth, together with the results of observations made during ventilation tests carried out at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation.During the subsequent discussion the question was raised of the possibility of any practical application of the method of attack described, and also whether the theoretical considerations mentioned were likely to be of any real utility to the mining engineer engaged in ventilation work in a metalliferous mine.

IN beginning my remarks, may I make it entirely clear that since January 4, 1947, I have not been a member of the United States Delegation to-the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission I am speaking, therefore, in purely a personal capacity. Because of the interest of the engineering profession with reference to uranium, and because of the title assigned me for this talk, I am going to assume that you know what the United States Plan is for the control of atomic energy. At best, in the limited time, I could only summarize, at the risk of giving undue emphasis to the items mentioned, and at the risk of omitting many important parts of what seems so far to be a complete and well-rounded Plan for meeting the problem. I will aim to comment upon those aspects of the Plan that continue as problems and involve apparent, or obvious, misunderstandings and contrary views The control of atomic energy represents not only a problem but a challenge-both faced by- all the peoples of the world It involves a new approach to the problems of the kinds that arise between nations, problems that have not ever been solved even by international treaties in their efforts to outlaw weapons of war. These efforts range from the Kellogg-Briand treaty to outlaw war, and its obvious failure to prevent World War II, to the interdiction by the Pope of the use of the crossbow in the days of the Crusades. Date of Congress: Sept. 20-25, 1915 The Committee on Local Affairs is fortunate in having secured for a period expiring on Oct. 17, an option. on 100 rooms at the Palace, St. Francis. and Fairmont hotels, the three leading hotels in San Francisco, with the distinct understanding that, on account of previous engagements whereby the hotels are reserved to their capacity, the rooms must be vacated on Sept. 25, 1915. The rates applying will be $7 per day for the court rooms occupied by two people, or $10 per clay for outside rooms occupied by two people. The outside rooms will face the main thoroughfares at the Palace and will face the city and bay at the Fairmont, which latter is situated oil a high hill. The St. Francis faces an open square and is flanked by main thoroughfares on two sides. If any members desire their reservation to extend either before the 20th or beyond the 25th, the Committee will use its best endeavors to secure such extension in individual cases, in accordance with the indicated wish. The Hotel Bureau in San Francisco is co-operating actively and closely with the. Committee on Local Affairs of the International Engineering Congress and offers the choicest rooms in any of 350 hotels other than the three mentioned above. This Hotel Bureau controls 50,000 rooms in San Francisco, which are all provided with hot and cold water, stationary basins, baths, house telephones, elevators, and bell boy service.

The amount of lead in concentrates that moved in international trade in 1952 was only 16 pct of the world mine production of lead and was less than 27 pct of the total of lead in concentrates and lead metal that traveled from one country to another. Because almost all lead is derived from galena, lead concentrates are high grade, with a theoretical maximum of 86 pct lead, and can be shipped as such without transporting a considerable weight of waste material. It would not be surprising, therefore, to find the large share of lead in international trade moves in concentrates (Rule 5). This is not, as has just been mentioned, actually the case. There is more than one explanation for the situation. Lead smelting is not a particularly difficult process and is one for which smelting equipment can readily be made of the best size for the tonnage to be handled. Another factor that encourages local smelting is the effort of many mining countries to see that a maximum of profit from their raw materials remains in the home country. Still another factor is the newness of large scale lead mining in two of the three largest exporters of lead in concentrates. In these countries, South West Africa and French Morocco, there has not yet been time to erect enough smelting capacity to process all of the concentrate output. Even in these countries, however, it will not be long, if present trends continue and plans are fulfilled, before most or all of the lead mined is domestically smelted.

"INTRODUCTION The so called Porto Maravilha Project consists of the re-urbanization of a 500 ha area in the Rio de Janeiro port region. Several changes in local infrastructure are being implemented, including a significant change in the road system, with the demolition of the former “Via Perimetral” viaduct and construction of 4 new tunnels: • Saúde tunnel - 35 m long (Waimberg et al, 2014); • “Binária tunnel” - 1012 m long; • “Via Expressa” twin tunnels - 1850 m long each way. The tunnels were excavated almost completely in rock using conventional drill and blast methodology and only some short stretches in weathered rock, associated to faults zones, residual soils and marine sediments close to the tunnel portals. During excavation of access shaft and “Via Expressa” and “Binária” tunnels significant ground settlements as well as settlements of buildings founded both on shallow and deep foundations were measured. These values could not be associated to conventional tunneling induced settlement troughs. This paper focuses on the “Via Expressa” tunnels, presenting a brief description of the project as a whole, its geological and geotechnical background, monitoring results, and a discussion of possible causes of the measured settlements. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Porto Maravilha Project is an integrated multidisciplinary action on behalf of the Rio de Janeiro city council with support from the State and Federal Governments. In addition to creating new conditions for working, housing, transport, culture and leisure for the resident population, it also promotes expressive economic development in the region (Portonovo, 2015). Porto Maravilha Project is carrying out actions for the recovery of the region’s historical heritage, as well as promoting the population´s social and economic development. One of the main benefits of the Porto Maravilha Project is the construction of the new traffic system in the port area, consisting of the Express and Binário roadways. The new project, which will replace the current Perimetral Rodrigues Alves viaduct system, will increase traffic flow capacity by 27%."

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to supplement its two existing main fans. The third fan will operate in parallel with the two existing fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, NM, is a US Department of Energy (DOE), Carlsbad Area Office, facility that is designed to permanently dispose of US defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep, bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for modifying, supplementing or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel et al., 1997) to identify and quantify operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling con¬straints. WIPP was scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP &apos;s ability to declare facility readiness. Therefore, operational disruptions during the system tie-in had to be minimized. All engineering for the project has been com¬pleted, and physical modifications were begun in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

It may at first sight appear somewhat presumptuous for the writer to attempt to discuss a subject in which he cannot pretend to possess any special scientific training; but a sufficient apology can surely be found in the fact that a very large percentage of the accidents from explosives occurring in metalliferous mines is traceable to the ignorance of the characteristics of these compounds by the miners who have to handle them, and to their deliberate disobedience of the rules laid down for their guidance by the manufacturers, the government regulations, or the special rules of the mines.The only method which promises any possibility of improvement upon these conditions is to substitute reason and understanding for the rule-of-thumb principle which says &quot;you should do this&quot; or &quot;you should not do that.&quot; In the one case his own knowledge and intelligence enables the miner to avoid any dangerous practice in the other his inclination prompts him to do anything which will save time, provided he is not found out or at best trusting to his memory to tell him what is dangerous, without the reasoning which makes that memory easy.Another evil of rule-of-thumb knowledge is that, from its very nature, it prevents adaptability, and so we find that old miners, who learnt blasting in the days of black powder, cannot understand why high explosives do not require heavy tamping, or because copper bars are permitted in tamping powder they should not be used with other explosives...

TECHNOLOGY is best nurtured by a sympathetic climate that is a composite of many factors. Necessity is a highly motivating factor as illustrated by the abnormal surge of technologic development curing wartime. Other factors include appropriate timing, economic pressures, available personnel, and in some instances, legislative action. Problems of recent concern to mining technology have been the quality and quantity of available technical personnel and the possibilities of restrictive legislation. The quality and quantity of technically trained personnel may be inadequate to meet the rapidly increasing complexity of modern technology coupled with the growing demand for qualified personnel. The question of appropriate training was a subject for debate.2 The curriculum and methods of teaching have changed. Questions have been raised on the relationship of scientist and engineer, interdisciplinary versus specialized curriculum, undergraduate versus graduate training, and the place of the smaller schools versus the large university-research complexes that have developed at some universities. Various aspects of the subject of engineering education for the mining industry were discussed at the meeting on Mining and Mineral Engineering Manpower at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, November 18-19, 1963. Meanwhile, the trend toward interdisciplinary training gathers momentum as illustrated by the establishment of the School of Engineering Science at Johns Hopkins, the Schools of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia, Princeton, and Yale, the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics at Harvard and, more recently, the School of Engineering Science at Florida State University which cuts across the conventional areas of civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering.

ABOUT four years ago the writer proposed a revision of the correlation of the Huronian formations in Michigan, and noted the bearing of the question on the correlations of the Huronian rocks in Wisconsin and Minnesota.1 Dr. C. K. Leith opposed this revision and argued for the retention of the correlations of the United States Geological Survey, published in 1911,2 for which he and Dr. Van Hise were mainly responsible. As late as June, 1917, Harder and Johnson, following Leith, thought it "premature to change radically a correlation based on years of careful field work."3 The work of Wolff on the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges, of Hotchkiss on the Gogebic Range (unpublished), and of the writer and assistants on the Michigan ranges, together with data developed by exploratory and mining operations, has introduced so many pew facts not recognized in the scheme of the U. S. Geological Survey that the correlations of 1911 must be considered, in some important respects, obsolete. Indeed new data are accumulating so rapidly that any classification, which for the moment may seem best to explain the facts, is almost immediately modified or refined by further observations. The problem of Huronian correlations is difficult, but interesting and important. With the aid of fossils, stratigraphers of the post-Algonkian formations have been able to show that slight disconformities may separate strata of vastly different ages, and that within physically conformable strata may be concealed a hiatus of great magnitude. The correct sampling of ores is a subject of far greater importance than is usually conceded to it. Of the little which has been published on this subject, the recent paper by Mr. Glenn, with the accompanying discussion by Dr. Raymond (Trans., xx., 155), is the latest and best, and well worthy the careful perusal of all interested in accurate sampling, whether by hand or by machine. It is doubtless true that thorough hand-sampling gives as good average results as can be obtained; but all hand-sampling is subject to the possible incompetency, carelessness, or dishonesty of the workmen employed. It is, moreover, tedious and expensive, requires large space, and usually entails considerable delay, both in unloading and in sampling. For these and other reasons, machine-sampling is now regarded with more favor than ever before. So-called machine-sampling may be accomplished in two radically different ways: 1. Part of the stream of material is taken for the whole time. 2. The whole stream of material is taken for part of the time. Under the first case the stream, as it issrles from the deliveryspout of the crusher, is cut continuously in any given proportion, such as one-tenth, one-fourth, or one-half, by some fixed apparatus, which, as it contains no moving parts, is strictly speaking not a machine at all, but may be termed an appliance. Three different physical techniques have been used to see through or probe into rocks, so miners might know what is ahead or overhead. These are radar, sonar, and a unique type of sonar called nonlinear sonar. Five radar systems have been developed. The highest frequency used is 4300 MHz for detecting small fractures at close range. This gives the best resolution. For longest range (over 2000 m, or 6560 ft) we use the 30 MHz radar for finding faults ahead of mining or ranging to salt dome flanks. Two types of salt, dome and bedded, are recognized. Radar works well in dry (dome) salt, but not in bedded salt which contains small amounts of water. The dipole moment of water absorbs energy from the radar. Thus was born the 30 MHz radar system and sonar probing systems. These can probe to 100 m (328 ft) even into wet salt. All probing systems measure data in time, which are converted to distance by measuring the time of travel of radar or sonar through salt pillars of known thickness. Ranges of probing in salt are from less than 1 m (3.3 ft) to more than 2000 m (6560 ft). Uses of radar and sonar probing in mines include mapping the top of salt above a mine; mapping salt dome flanks; finding impurities in salt such as anhydrite, sandstone, or potash stringers; locating old boreholes in salt pillars; locating fractures in salt; and finding faults or water zones ahead of mining.

"In this research, the operation of screen classifying in silica processing circuits was investigated and modified by replacement of available trommel screens with teetered bed separator (TBS). In addition the effect of the mentioned replacement and addition of attrition scrubber on quality of final product, impurities removal, recovery and production rate were inspected. Considering screen efficiency problems to achieve certain particle size distribution, hydraulic classifying system was selected instead of trommel screens. Application of suggested plan improved quality and particle size distribution of produced silica significantly. Optimization of size classification in process circuit resulted in increase in production rate up to 21% (from 67% to 81%), silica recovery (from 68.35% up to 83.11%) and relative enhancement in removal of impurities such as Fe2O3 and TiO2. After optimization and stabilization of grinding and size classification section, industrial attrition scrubbing tests were carried out and the best solid percent and retention time were determined i.e. 70% and 6 minutes, respectively. Using sodium carbonate during attrition scrubbing, has major effect on removal of surface coating and staining especially sharp increase in clay removal; therefore 2 kg/t of sodium carbonate can be optimistic point of industrial procedure for this silica processing plant. It should be mentioned that application of attrition scrubbing which is followed by screw classifier for de-sliming were useful for better cumulating of particles in the range of appropriate liberation degree (+106-300µm) and efficient removal of metallic (iron and titanium oxides) and non-metallic (clays and feldspars) impurities."

TQM is a term of which most metallurgists have heard and a system of which some have had first hand experience. This paper is designed to encourage further thinking on TQM and how it can effect your organisation. Consideration of organisational culture and objectives are a prime pre-requisite when planning for the implementation of TQM. It is argued that there is no "brand" of quality culture of TQM which can be applied en masse to the mining industry. Definitions ofTQM are proposed, and the essence ofTQM as being about increasing customer service, improving the quality of goods and services, and involving people in their work is discussed, in conjunction with the concept of Customer as applied to the metallurgical industry and TQM. The integration of TQM into Quality Accreditation Stan­dards is then discussed. Finally, examples of the benefits that may be achieved with Implementation ofTQM into metallurgical and operations groups is presented, along with an analysis of the difficulties of implementation into our businesses and operations.

Blasthole drilling by todays standards is not a mature operation. In most mining appli¬cations, the blasthole drill rig is the least understood piece of machinery. Draglines, mining shovels, and haulage trucks may have more charisma, but the entire mining process starts with the drilling of blastholes to facilitate removal of the overburden and/or the primary material being mined. There are two (2) principal drilling methods them being rotary and percussion. In certain situations, percussion drilling is the most practical method, but for most applications, rotary drilling using the rotary tricone bit is the common and accepted drilling technique. While the drilling rig is on the surface and quite visible to everyone, it is really the object at the end of the drill pipe, the tricone bit, that is doing the work and drilling the hole. The rig supplies power to the bit and air to clean the hole. In addition, it must be capable of providing certain other functions and should be properly outfitted to adequately support the rotary tricone bit.
