I am sure that you are- all familiar with Airborne Magneto-meter Surveying so I shall-spend only a brief moment describing the instrument and techniques and the remainder of the allotted time-on-modern-application-of the instrument.The Airborne Magnetometer used by Aero Service in AUstralia-was designated by Gulf Research and implements the saturable-core flux-gate--principle. The first magnetometers developed'weremagnetic-balances and depended on the counter-torque principle but these required a stable platform and hence are not applicable to airborne surveying. Other methods include the induction methods, the Hall Effect methods, magneto-striction methods., Deflectioh. of,free.electrons, the proton-precession methods.Some: of these are applicable to airborne surveying. As a matter of-fact the nuclear precession magnetometer is the one generally used in the Satellites because it has been miniaturized most successfully.The Gulf Magnetometer is the one most generally used in mineral and petroleum exploration because its sensitivity is sufficient for the problem and-data and instrument techniques have been worked out and standardized.

At the office of the Chief of Engineers, Washington, there is a unique collection of engineering material used and developed in the present war. It. is a most interesting group of war devices, from the special trench shovel that excavates both gas and water, to the standard gage locomotives that were sent to France so complete that they were lifted from the ships by cranes, placed on the-rails on shore, filled with water, fired up, and moved out from underneath the cranes under their own steam. Everything is exhibited either by models, or by photograph where the original samples are too large to admit of demonstration in an ordinary office. The forestry section has an interesting exhibit of the wonderful work clone in France; where, owing to the shortage of coal and the necessity for burning wood, the Forestry Unit of the A. E. F. in one month stacked up 60 mi. of cord wood (80,000 cords); also cut 6.6 mi. of timber, stacked 12 ft. long, and 10 ft. high, containing 50,000,000 hoard feet of sawed timber.

The ISA PROCESSTM cathode plate is characterised by its copper coated suspension bar, coupled with a blade employing austenitic stainless steel alloy 316L. The blade material has become the mainstay of the technology and has been closely copied by competing cathode designs. Improvement to the cathode plate design remains a key area for research, and ongoing developments by Xstrata Technology's ISA PROCESSTM have recently been commercialised. Two such developments are the ISA Cathode BRTM and ISA 2000 AB Cathode. The ISA BR cathode is a lower resistance cathode that has proven to enhance operating efficiencies. The AB cathode was designed to improve stripping inefficiencies in the ISA 2000 technology. These developments have now had time to mature and their long term performance will be discussed. Rising material costs and the desire to extend the operating boundaries of the standard 316L cathode plate has triggered a number of significant advances. These involve the use of different stainless steels as alternatives in some operational situations. The technical aspects and results of commercial trials on this development will also be discussed in this paper.

Having successfully applied computer techniques to open pit mining applications, many software developers are now using their skills to tackle the much harder areas of underground mine design, planning and production.Dramatic improvements in the performance to price ratio of hardware (including high resolution graphics screens), a better understanding of the techniques of surface and solids modelling (and their subsequent display), moves towards standard user interfaces and advanced concepts of representing grade distribution in the ore body have all contributed to the recent increase in underground mining software activity.This paper details the general requirements of a workable underground mining software system, providing a minimum checklist of desirable features and emphasises the importance of ease of use, flexibility and intuitive feel. Some relevant trends in hardware, software and application techniques are highlighted and comments made on areas which require further development or are only available in a small number of packages.Finally, a comment is made on the role of computer models to provide a unifying medium for tying together all aspects of underground design, planning and production.

Qualitative measurement of respirable dust in metal mines is limited and an example of this is demonstrated at Northparkes Mine, where operational experience was sought for measuring dust standards and identifying exposure limits. However, relying on operational experience has limited value due to variation in observations from person to person and is based on visible dust (which is larger in size than respirable dust). However, with sophisticated dust measuring equipment, like the real-time aerosol monitor, dust concentrations can be accurately measured and recorded concisely. Research conducted as part of a collaborative agreement on behalf of Northparkes to launch an occupational dust monitoring program was implemented on the mine site. To form the basis of this research, it was hypothesised that no proper dust measuring testing at the mine site had been adequately identified. In addition, existing occupational hygiene monitoring programs did not adequately quantify employee exposures to these hazards. This project will outline the results of an occupational dust monitoring program, hence greatly improving the capacity to quantify the health risks posed to employees.

This paper describes a wind tunnel modelling study on airflow and pollutant concentration in a large open pit mine located in southern China. A 1:1000 scale model of the surface mine was fabricated and placed in a wind tunnel. Airflow velocity in the test section of the wind tunnel can be continuously adjusted from 0.3 m/s to 6.0 m/s. In this study, both the present pit condition and the projected final pit condition were modelled. Airflow direction and velocity profiles were obtained. The impact of wind direction and velocity on airflow was also studied. The pollutant concentration distribution in the open pit was simulated using smoke, and a distribution profile was obtained. Respirable dust concentrations at the mine site were measured, then its concentrations at the projected final pit condition were estimated using the obtained pollutant concentration distribution profile. Under normal meteorological conditions, it is expected that the respirable dust concentration for the final pit should not exceed the government standard. Most commercial explosives contain from 70% to 94% (by weight) ammonium nitrate. When some of the explosives end up in shot rock and ore, through either spillage or incomplete detonation, ammonia and nitrates can leach into the ground water. In recent years, state and federal regulators have applied more stringent water-quality standards, particularly at new mines and development projects. When mining conditions permit, bulk ANFO, a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, is the explosive of choice. ANFO is less costly than other explosives but it dissolves readily in water. Several case histories in the United States and Canada show a clear connection between uncontrolled losses of bulk explosives and high nitrate levels in mine effluents. Mining companies have tried several approaches to reduce ammonia and nitrate levels in groundwater. These approaches range from controlling explosive losses to treating the mine effluents. In this paper, controlling explosive losses is addressed For both packaged and bulk explosives, guidelines to limit losses during storage, handling and use are described in detail.

A stibnite concentrate from Golden Spec (WA) was subjected to a series of tests involving high pressure cyanidation and pressure oxidation followed by conventional cyanidation. The concentrate, whose gold content was 18.1 g/t, yielded only eight per cent of the gold when leached directly by a standard 24-hour cyanidation test. The recovery was increased to only 15 per cent when pressure cyanided under the following conditions: ambient temperature, 2000 kPa oxygen pressure, two hour retention time and 30 per cent w/w solids pulp density. This poor response to pressure cyanidation emphasised the refractoriness of the material. Evidence of the fine distribution of the gold through the concentrate, from measurements of the particle sizing distribution and the gold analyses of the individual fractions, also suggested that this concentrate was highly refractory. Pressure oxidation of the concentrate at elevated temperatures followed by cyanidation yielded recoveries as high as 94 per cent. However a preoxidation treatment under the following conditions was necessary: 230¦C, 2000 kPa oxygen pressure for a period of four hours.

C.-From a metallurgical standpoint, there are several ways in which a reduction of the tin consumed in commercial non-ferrous and white-metal alloys can be effected. First, a reduction of the tin, content of the alloy; second, substitution of part or all of the tin content by some other metal; third, a substitution of a different type of alloy, which in some cases also involves a change in mechanical design. The Bureau of Standards has been studying these methods of conservation for tin alloys, particularly in regard to babbitts and bearing metals, bronzes, and solders. Much of the information secured by the Bureau was obtained from answers to questionnaires sent to manufacturers and users of these materials, so that, in general, any of the following suggestions or recommendations can be considered as being practical and as having already been thoroughly tried. In the mid-1970's a major new prospect was proved in a previously unworked region of North East Leicester- shire, United Kingdom. Preliminary estimates from borehole information showed over 500 million tonnes of recoverable reserves. A special Planning Team was set up, to co-ordinate the work for the two local Areas, South Nottinghamshire and South Midlands (management of production of the UK National Coal Board is organised in twelve such Areas). The team was led by one of the authors as Deputy Director, Mining, North East Leicestershire Prospect (NELP). The remit imposed by the National Coal Board was to analyse the possible options of number, location and eventual rates of output of shaft or drift access; to select a recommended alternative in the light of geological, mining, topographical and environmental considerations; and prepare submissions in accordance with standard Board practice on major projects - such submissions including detailed engineering design, financial appraisal, and full risk assessment. To assist the Planning Team, surface and underground consult- ant engineers were appointed to prepare feasibility studies of specific civil and engineering problems.

The large band gap and insulating properties of sphalerite have limited the application of standard electrochemical techniques for studying its reactions with flotation reagents. This problem has been overcome by developing electrodes that rely on the surface conductance produced when sphalerite is activated with copper or other heavy metals. A brief exposure of the mineral in copper sulfate solutions results in electrodes that exhibit significant electrochemical activity characteristic of copper sulfides. Voltammetry studies conducted on sphalerite activated in 10-4 M CuS04, solutions at pH 4.6 provide information on both the amount and the nature of the activation product(s). It is shown that copper activation is strongly dependent on the electrochemical potential applied during activation. Activation at potentials increasingly negative of the rest potential causes a progressive increase in the amount of copper on the surface; activation at potentials positive of the rest potential decreases the amount of copper on the surface. The results indicate that both the kinetics of copper uptake and, possibly, the chemical composition (stoichiometry) of the activation product are controlled by the electrochemical potential.

Develop a cost-effective diesel aerosol sampler that can be used by industry and regulatory agencies to determine the diesel exhaust aerosol concentration in mine atmospheres. The sampler must be easy to use, wearable by mine personnel, compatible with current personal sampling protocols, and inexpensive. Approach The University of Minnesota (University) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have developed and tested a prototype diesel exhaust aerosol sampler. The sampler, however, was complicated and expensive to fabricate. Consequently, the USBM redesigned the sampler to simplify both manufacturing and use, and the sampler was evaluated to ensure equivalency with the prototype. Background The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that "whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a 'potential occupational carcinogen,' as defined in the Cancer Policy of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration." In addition, the U.S. Mina Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has been directed by an advisory committee to establish a diesel exhaust aerosol standard and regulations to minimize exposure to diesel pollutants in underground coal mines.

PRIOR to 1934 all haulage of ore and stripping on the Mesabi Range was by rail. Early rail systems had small narrow-gage locomotives with correspondingly small dump cars. These trains were replaced with larger standard gage rail systems powered by steam locomotives ranging up to 224 tons in weight, which have in turn been replaced by diesel electric locomotives. Along with this development cars have been increased to 30-cu yd capacity. Improvement of cars includes alloy steel construction for lower over-all weight and use of roller bearings to decrease rolling resistance. Despite all of these developments, the total material hauled by rail on the Mesabi Range has decreased every year. Yet, this is no reason to believe that rail haulage is becoming obsolete. Its adaptation to small mine operation has become impractical, but in large mines where normal railroad grades are possible or where hauls to plants or dumps are long, rail haulage is still one of the most economical methods of transporting large quantities of material.

The environmental and social responsibilities of the mining industry have long been recognized by the industry itself, but during the past decade it became one of the main targets for the more radical members of the community. This came as something of a shock to an industry which had always considered that it had acted responsibly within the standards of the day. As far back as early 1968, the Australian Min- ing Industry Council (AMIC) was clipping from newspapers the odd letter written by environmen- talists and critics of mining activities. In those days every such letter was carefully studied to ensure that AMIC, if not having the answers, at least had an understanding of the types of argu- ments then starting to be used against mining activity and in favour of environmental preserva- tion. Within 18 months, the infrequent letter to the editor had become a flood of such letters and feature articles, and the environmentalists' attack on mining activities had been launched in all its Vehemence.

INTRODUCTION The Climax Mine is located on the continen¬tal divide, on Fremont Pass, about 145 Km south west of Denver, Colorado. Molybdenum, along with the by products, tungsten, tin, and pyrite are produced from both the open pit and under¬ground operations. The underground operation utilizes a panel caving mining system, and produces in excess of 27,000 mt per day. In the mid 1930's, the Climax mine began changing from a grizzly level layout to the slusher drift system which is still in use to¬ day. Over the years, the slusher drift layout has been refined to correct, improve, and sim¬plify minor operational problems. In common with most older hardrock mines, the development equipment used at Climax was the standard rail mounted, pneumatic mining machinery. This type of equipment remained in use, at least to some degree, until about four years ago. For production, 112 Kw electric slushers were used, while mine traffic was rail with trolley locomotives. Through-hole copper plating is performed to make a multi-layer printed circuit board. The through hole plating is first carried out by Pd catalyst treatment, followed by copper non-electric plating. The amount of Pd catalyst used in one plant is about 0.25-2 m3/month (8 g/dm3 PdCl2 base) depending on the plant scale, and the cost of the catalyst reaches 17,000¬I35,000 US$/month. In this study, the flow and material balance of a Pd in Pd catalyst treatment process was investigated. About 60% of Pd catalyst adheres on the through-hole and other part of setup, while 25% is released into the washing liquor. Pd in the washing liquor should be collected by a suitable method like a pressure filtration using diatomite. The material balance of Pd in Pd catalyst treatment process and the recovery method of Pd from waste solution containing Pd catalyst was investigated.

Through the use of structural analysis programs such as Unwedge and considering the shear strength of applied fibrecrete it can be shown that fibrecrete can provide a higher factor of safety in a ætypicalÆ underground development excavation than standard rock bolts. This paper describes the progression of ground support from an æas requiredÆ component of mining to the use of bolts and surface support as a mandatory requirement. With the mandatory requirement for surface support, fibrecrete has been considered and applied as a secondary feature but simple analysis and practical observations indicate that it may be considered as primary support. The key elements to its implementation are: When is it safe to work under fresh fibrecrete and how do we practically determine this? How much ground support does fibrecrete provide? How can we reduce the cost of fibrecrete? An examination of these questions indicates fibrecrete can be much safer,less expensive and quicker to install than normal ground support elements. This paper explores practical examples from sites where significant benefits have been achieved by mine operators.

MINING operations of the Charcas unit at present are limited to the Tiro General mine at Charcas, in the State of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The Tiro General mine was first operated during the Spanish occupation of Mexico for rich silver ores in an oxidized zone along the outcrop of the principal vein. In depth the ore is a complex sulfide with widely varying proportions of sphalerite, argentiferous galena and chalcopyrite; and until recent years, it was economically impossible to carry on mining otherwise than irregularly in sections of the veins richest in galena and chalcopyrite. The advent of selective flotation brought the orebody as a whole within the field of economic interest, and a flotation mill of 650 metric tons daily capacity was constructed in the year 1925. The mining of partly worked-out sections of the mine, as well as the very heavy ground in most of the stopes opened in virgin ore, presented an unusually difficult problem. This -paper describes the so-called "filled top slice" stoping method finally adopted as the standard system.

The mechanics of load transfer of fully-grouted roof bolts in coal mines has been investigated in laboratory and analytical studies. The purpose of this research is to increase the understanding and better interpret data from pull tests which are routinely performed in the field. Laboratory work includes variation of bolt length, hole diameter and grout type in pull tests. Four-foot bolts were tested in holes of 1- and 1-3/8-inch diameters. Both polyester resins and inorganic grouts were used as the anchorage medium. The bolts were strain gauged at six locations to observe the rate of load transfer from the bolt to the rock mass when a force was applied at the bolt end using standard Jack pull testing procedures and equipment. Analytical studies using closed form solutions and finite-element techniques were compared to experimental results. The models are for the elastic regime only but do include slip elements. A detailed analysis of the load transfer mechanisms from the bolts through the grout to the rock mass is presented.

Some of the geochemical relationships that exist between subsurface fluids and the associated geologic strata in petroleum producing areas of Louisiana have been determined. Samples of petroleum-associated water were obtained from 126 wells in Louisiana that produced from sediments of three geologic ages: Tertiary, Cretaceous, and Jurassic. The samples were trans-ported to a central laboratory for analysis of chemical composition, using standard methods, to determine if the compositions varied with the geologic strata of their source and, if so, why. The dissolved constituents were com-pared with those of a brine that was concentrated by evaporation. The concentrations of bromide, calcium, and strontium were useful in distinguishing the brines produced from sediments of a late age from those of an earlier age. The concentration ratios of Mg' (total equivalent magnesium) and bromide indicated that dolomitization probably had occurred and altered the composition of the brines. A principal-components analysis of the data indicated an inverse relationship between depth and concentrations of bromide, strontium, calcium, and lithium.
