Most geologists have felt the need of a longer base than is ordinarily available when using a Brunton compass or other convenient instrument for taking strikes and dips in the field. To overcome this difficulty a lath or stick with straight parallel sides is frequently used. This accessory adds to the accuracy of the work, but it is a decidedly inconvenient one for the geologist to carry, especially if he be heavily loaded or is travelling on horse-back or through thick brush on foot. The writer has abandoned its use in favour of a sturdy two-foot carpenter's rule. The rule preferred is manufactured by J. Rabone and Sons, Birmingham, England. It is provided with a good level-bubble set in one of the limbs, and a scale, of the protractor type, graduated to five degrees through 180 degrees, attached to the main joint at the middle of the rule. (See Figure 1). For an instrument of its kind it is very accurate, and, in addition to the uses mentioned below, it 'is a handy thing to have around any camp. It is frequently used when plotting roughly in the field and for a protractor when one is not available. When not in use it may readily be carried in the top of the high-boot or legging. Ordinary strikes are measured as illustrated in Figure 1, the compass being held against the rule, which is in a horizontal position. Dips may be measured in a corresponding way by holding the Brunton compass against the extended rule, which is thus used merely as a straight edge. It is usually much more convenient, however, to ? use the rule only for this purpose, in which case one foot of the length rests as a straight-edge against the rock surface. The problem of unsteady-state gas flow through porous media leads to a second-order non-linear partial differential equation for which no analytical solution has been found. In this paper a stable numerical procedure is developed for solving the equation for production of gas at constant rate from linear and radial systems. An electronic digital computer is used to perform the numerical integration using an implicit form of an approximating difference equation. Solutions are presented in graphical form for various values of dimension-less parameters. The solutions are compared with the laboratory study of gas depletion in a linear system. INTRODUCTION Production of fluids from porous rock reservoirs is essentially a transient process. Transient gradients develop as soon as production begins, and further withdrawals continue to cause disturbances which propagate throughout the reservoir, each adding in some way to the prior ones. A correct mathematical analysis of this behavior is complicated by the fact that the transient or unsteady-state flow of compressible fluids must be described by difficult second-order partial differential equations. As a practical matter, three distinctly different cases arise: 1. Flow of single-phase liquid 2. Flow of gases 3. Multiphase flow The first of these has been found to give a linear second-order equation similar to the well-known heat flow equation. where 7 is fluid density, 8 is time, and a a constant for the system, provided d 7 = r cdp, where the compressibility, c, is constant over the range of pressure, p, considered. Solutions of Equation (1) for both linear and radial flow are available in several forms.2'3' On the other hand. the second case, which is the flow of gas, gives a non-linear second-order equation, the solution of which is not known. Although a number of approximate solutions have been proposed, each is limited in value by the associated simplifying assumptions. Inasmuch as the analysis of transient flow is limited to liquid systems, a solution of the second case is necessary if further progress is to be made in studying underground fluid movement. For this reason a solution of Equation (2) was undertaken by means of numerical integration of approximating difference equations. BASIC DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION Equation (2; is derived by combining the equation of continuity, the perfect gas law, and Darcy's law to give the basic differential equation Strictly speaking, the fluids present in a gas reservoir are not perfect gases. Furthermore, there are indications that over certain velocity ranges, Darcy's law is not applicable. It would not be practicable. however, to attempt to obtain numerical solutions which would take into account all the possible variations from these laws which could occur in actual systems. The

THE slate industry of the United States has shown a marked decline in value of products made annually since the peak year 1925, although there has been moderate improvement over the lean years 1932 to 1934. In 1940, the value of all slate products sold was approximately 5 ¾ million dollars for a total output of 473,450 short tons. The quantity sold was a little less and the value a great deal lower than the annual averages for the past two decades. Enormous quantities of waste materials result from the quarrying, splitting and milling of slate. Obviously, utilization of such waste material is desirable, not only from the viewpoint of economical operation but also for the purpose of conserving natural resources. One possible use is to produce expanded or puffed lightweight aggregate for use in concretes. Such concretes are strong enough for specific uses, and the advantage of lightness could be obtained in such structures as the walls and roofs of buildings, suspension-bridge roadways and various other applications where weight is a factor. Conceivably, these uses could consume an appreciable annual tonnage. USE OF WASTE SLATES FOR MAKING AGGREGATES The lightweight-aggregate industry has been discussed elsewhere4.5 and need not be covered in detail in this paper. The materials commonly utilized are naturally occurring aggregates such as volcanic cinder, tuff and pumice; by-product materials, such as ordinary cinders and air-cooled slags; and the specially manufactured products, including Haydite, Pottsco, Gravelite, Cel-seal, Superock and Waylite. Slates, however, have not been given the consideration they merit, especially in the United States. In the British Isles, some work has been done3 on certain Welsh slates by the Building Research Station to stimulate the use of these wastes. REQUIREMENTS FOR RAW MATERIALS As pointed out by Hughes,4 the light-weight-aggregate industry is segregated in regions adjacent to large cities in order to localize the market and avoid the necessity of long freight haulage. Waste slate from the deposits of eastern Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and Virginia would meet the basic requirement of any low-priced structural raw material. One apparent advantage is attained when slate waste, normally discarded, is utilized in the manufacture of a by-product. Mining or quarrying costs usually have been assessed against the main product. Some additional grinding might be desirable, but this operation would be relatively cheap, as most slates grind easily. It is believed that virtually all slates, when properly heated, will expand to some degree. However, types that will expand from 3 to 7 times their original volume are preferred. The advanced process control has been well received and is utilized well over 95% of the time. In the years since, many lessons have been learned and many advances have been made. Improvements have produced millions of dollars of benefits and have included directly controlling feedrate with complex logic as opposed to using a bearing pressure controller, modifications to how sound is used for control, modifying logic for maximizing asset utilization and using advanced control for automating equipment restart.

C. G. McLACHLAN*-I have read this paper with considerable interest and wish to congratulate the authors on the care with which they carried out their experiments and for the detailed sizing data they have presented. 011 the other hand I do not feel that these data establish their contention that "with other factors the same, the work accomplished in a fine crushing rod mill is directly proportional to the rotating speed." My reason for making this statement is that their conclusion is based on the percentage of minus 65 mesh material produced at each of the speeds at which their tests were run. The rod mill is, however, not a fine grinding machine and therefore figures based on minus 65 mesh production are figures outside the range at which it operates to best advantage. Further, if rod mill performance is to be judged on the production of such material it should have been established that a rod mill will produce it as effectively as a ball mill. To check this last point I have gone over some of the rod and ball mill grind-ing figures for our Waite-Atnulet operation and find that the ball mill at that property produces more minus 65 mesh material per horsepower than the rod mill. Moreover, this comparison is even more favorable to the ball mill if it is limited to minus 100 mesh production. It therefore seems to me that the most satisfactory basis on which to try to com-pare the performance of the rod mill in the present case is by taking a weighted average of all the new surface produced per horsepower. W. H. Coghill3 has published data which can be applied to the sizing figures presented by the authors, and if this is done the units of new surface per horsepower produced in the Tennessee tests are as follows: Admittedly the increment of increase in new surface per horsepower shown in the foregoing figures is not great, but its trend is nevertheless definitely in favor of slower speed operation, for the conditions under which these particular tests were run. I also feel that some information regarding liner contour should have been given as I think it will be found that a mill which is equipped with liners which lift the rod load can be run at a slower speed than a mill in which the liners are comparatively smooth. J. F. MYERS and F. M. LEWIS (authors' reply)—The position taken by Mr. McLachlan is to be respected even though we are all aware of the faults of surface considerations. As he points out. the increment of increase is very small. It is so small in fact that for all practical purposes it does not conflict with the conclusions of the paper. The authors appreciate Mr. McLachlan's comprehensive study of the data.

"Overland conveyor systems to transport bulk materials from mines to processing plants or load-out stations have to be seriously considered as the viable alternative to truck and train haulage systems. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel, conveyors with their electrical drives generally prove to be the least costly when operating and maintenance expenses are analyzed for the life of the installation.IntroductionOverland conveyor systems are now considered as one of the viable alternatives which should be closely investigated when a mining company and its engineers initiate studies on methods of transporting raw materials from a mine to a processing plant or rail load-out station.This paper will generalize the overland conveyor and compare it with alternative handling systems. Each installation must be carefully studied to determine the best route, type of foundations river crossings; amount of excavation work for cut and fill, maintenance roads, etc. No two locations are the same nor are the principles of operation of an overland conveyor the same as those of a normal plant or mine belt conveyor. The proper time and effort must be put into the study of the system to evaluate the costs for comparison with other systems.The length of the overland conveyor depends on the layout of the mine and plant and the topography of the terrain between the terminals. Individual lengths may be up to 20 km, and a series of conveyors may extend 100 km or more.Advantages of Overland ConveyorsThe main advantage of overland conveyors is the low operating and maintenance costs which will be realized over its years of operation. Although truck haulage probably will permit lower capital investment during the initial phases of the mine development when the annual capacities have not developed to the design level, their operating and maintenance costs will be considerably higher. When evaluating the total costs per ton of material to be handled during the expected life of the operation and the projected increases for diesel fuel versus electricity, overland conveyor systems will generally prove to be economically more viable."

INTRODUCTION Necessary science and technology are not well established for the design of responsible treatment and disposal of arsenical residues from refractory gold ores. Specifically, there is uncertainty about the precise composition and behaviour of oxidised arsenic species in these wastes, and an analysis of possible chemical behaviour suggests that potentially difficult control and disposal problems remain to be so 1 ved. In tackling these the undoubted toxicity of arsenic in excess and its bad press should not blind one to the realities of actual behaviour in the environment, and that some adverse behaviour inevitably has to be to 1 erated as a cost in return for the recovery of an operation's gold for society. The problem is to minimise any such cost. Each refractory ore will be different. Many will contain so little arsenic that it will cause only trivial problems in disposal, but there remain others with significant arsenic content, say in the order of 1% or more, to cause concern. As already implied, concern can be over emphasised but equally underestimated. The balance which must be struck in the design of responsible disposal in the widest sense requires objective and practical assessment of a complex range of chemical, biochemical, engineering and economic design factors, all of which should involve the process design team in constructive dialogue with the 1 oca l regulatory authorities. In British terms, the general objective should be the Best Practicable Environmental Option. Arsenic is ubiquitous in waters, rocks and soils and all living things. Its compounds undergo natural geochemical and bi ochemi cal cycles including powerful adsorption and precipitation processes which return to nature all leakage from the inevitable disturbance of mining and extraction operations. Within limits, all life is tolerant to its presence, and adaptation and detoxication processes occur to deal with local excesses.

TO obtain the best results from hammer drills, close attention must be paid to two factors in drill maintenance, which are of equal importance; one is lubrication, the other is the shank. With the exception of stoping drills, most modern rock drills require both oil and grease. The oil ports are in the lubricator, on or behind the hammer cylinder; the grease port for the lubrication of the chuck sleeve and rotating mechanism is on the chuck end. Ordinary machine oil is not adapted to rock drills; a heavier more gelatinous oil such as castor machine oil or liquid grease should be used. The lubricators should be filled once for every 12 or 14 ft. (3.5 to 4 m.) of hole drilled. Grease guns should be used to fill the port in the chuck end once a shift; a medium (No. 3) grease is well adapted to this purpose. Hard grease must not be put into the lubricators, as it will not flow through that part. Contrary to the popular belief, oiling a machine once or twice a shift does not provide sufficient lubrication; the drills should be oiled once for every 12 or 14 ft. of hole drilled. The rotating handle of a stoping drill is an oil reservoir and is provided with a port for oiling. The rotating handle is packed with wick-ing, or similar material, which causes the oil to feed slowly from the handle to the other parts of the machine. Stoping drills require oil at least twice a shift; lighter oils than castor, such as Arctic Ammonia, may be used. Drills used in shaft sinking can be oiled satisfactorily by placing a good-sized, drop, sight lubricator on the station above the sinking operations and connecting it with the air-line supplying the sinking drills. If this lubricator is properly filled and adjusted, a uniform oiling of the sinking machines will be effected without the necessity of oiling the drills individually. The grease end should be filled at the station or surface before each drilling period. The shift boss should see that the machines are greased and also that the lubricators at the station function properly. The life of the air-drill hose is somewhat shortened by this method, as oil attacks the inner tube; but as some oil is always present in the compressed air, this is not a serious objection to the method.

Control of radiation hazards in mines is only one of many goals of the Bureau of Mines. Radiation research is only a small part of the Bureau's mine health and safety research program. In this paper I will describe the mission and programs of the entire Bureau of Mines, with emphasis on the mine health and safety program of which our radiation research is a part. The radiation program and its results will be described in detail by other speakers during this symposium. The Bureau of Mines was established in 1910 and is one of a number of agencies within the Department of Interior. Our mission is given by the Organic Act of the Bureau of Mines, last revised in 1913, which still accurately describes our work today. The amended Organic Act (Public Law 62-386) gives the Bureau authority "... to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining, and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances with a view to improving health conditions, and increasing safety, efficiency, economic development, and conserving resources through the prevention of waste in the mining, quarrying, metallurgical, and other mineral industries; to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries..." Since 1913 at least 52 public laws bearing on Bureau responsibilities have come into force. However, our basic role is still unchanged, i.e. improving health conditions, and increasing safety and efficiency in the mineral industries. The two principal activities of the Bureau are Minerals Information and Analysis and Minerals Research. The Minerals Information and Analysis programs provide the data base and the analytical capability to support the development of effective national mineral policies. Data on the availability, production, and utilization of minerals are collected, interpreted, and analyzed for some 100 commodities. Resources of the most important commodities are evaluated to support policymaking that influences utilization of the Nation's existing and potential mineral supplies. The President's budget for the Mineral Information and Analysis programs in fiscal year 1982 is $34 million. The largest activity of the Bureau is Minerals Research, which is divided into three major programs: Mineral Resources Technology, Minerals Environmental Technology, and Minerals Health and Safety Technology. The principal goal of the Mineral Resources Technology program is to help provide technology to maintain an adequate supply of minerals for the United States. The budget requested by the President for this program in fiscal year 1982 is $41 million. The goal of the Minerals Environmental Technology Program is to create mining and mineral processing operations that are more compatible with the environment. The budget for this program in fiscal year 1982 is $12 million. The largest program of the Bureau is Minerals Health and Safety Technology, which has the goal of providing the technology to protect the health and safety of mine workers. The budget for health and safety research for fiscal year 1982 is $55 million. Our radiation research is part of the health and safety research program. The Bureau of Mines has done research to improve health and safety conditions in mines since it was established in 1910. The research expanded greatly following the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Public Law 91-173) and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977 (Public Law 95-164). These acts provided for increased health and safety regulatory activities, but they also significantly increased the funding available for mine health and safety research by the Bureau of Mines. Funding for the Bureau's health and safety research grew from $12 million in 1970 to $60 million in 1981. The funding in 1982 will be somewhat lower than that for 1981. However, the health and safety program funding is still approximately 40 percent of the total budget of the Bureau of Mines. Of the health and safety budget, 22 percent is spent on research to control health hazards in mines, including radiation hazards, which has a budget in 1982 of approximately $1.1 million. Other mine health hazards which the Bureau is doing research to control include respirable mine dusts which cause black lung and silicosis; excessive noise; toxic gases from explosives and diesel emissions; and excessive heat in deep hot mines. The other 78 percent of the budget is spent on safety research to prevent death and injury to miners from such causes as roof falls, fires, explosions, and accidents involving mining equipment. Over the past decade the majority of the Bureau's health and safety research has been done through outside contracts with private industry and universities. Our policy has been to do some research inhouse to maintain the expertise of Bureau personnel. Contractors are used to do research for which the Bureau does not have the necessary personnel available. The percentage of the program being done by contract has been gradually declining for the past few years, and in 1982 the program will be divided evenly between inhouse and contract research. The inhouse research of the Bureau is done at the 10 research centers located throughout the country. Our radiation research is done at three research centers, Denver, Spokane and Pittsburgh, and by contractors whose work is monitored by project officers at these centers. There are three Federal agencies involved in mine health and safety. These are the Bureau of Mines, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and

The existence of water is one of the most effective factors in deterioration of natural building stones. In the process of deterioration, capillary water absorption is the most significant procedure of water penetration into the building stones. Pyroclastic rocks have been widely utilized as building stone especially in historical buildings and monuments since ancient times in the Central Anatolia in Turkey. Nowadays, this type of rocks is used in the restoration of historical buildings as well as in the construction of modern buildings. Pyroclastic rocks are highly susceptible to deterioration process. Capillary rise has a significant influence on water penetration into building stones. Therefore, it is quite important to identify the factors affecting the values of capillarity, capillary rising speed, and capillary rise that define capillary water absorption in these rocks. To this end, pyroclastic rock samples in different textures were compiled from the Cappadocia region, in Central Anatolia. First, petrographic, mineralogical, geochemical, physical, and pore diameter distribution properties of the samples were determined in the laboratory. Then, capillarity values with capillary rise and capillary rise speeds dependent on time were established. Based on the data obtained, correlation coefficients between matrix percentage and capillary water absorption rate and capillary rise values of pyroclastic rocks were calculated and found to be as 0.850 and 0.891, respectively. Thus, the article proposes a new empirical equation to practically calculate the capillary rise value depending on the matrix percentage (MP) and median pore diameter (MPD) values.

MUELLER and Knott' have reported that Ti2Cu has the Si2Mo-type (Cllb) structure. The lattice parameters of Ti2Cu and the positions of the titanium and copper atoms are given by them as follows: ao = 2.944A; co = 10.786A 6 atoms per unit cell: 2 Cu (a) 000; 1/2: 1/2, 1/2 4 Ti (e) 002; 1/2, 1/2, 1/2 + z 00 -2 ; 1/2. 1/2. 1/2- z where z = 0.341 We have found eight other binary compounds which appear to be isostructural with Ti2Cu. All of them involve the combination of a titanium group element with a copper group element or a titanium group element with palladium. The compounds and their lattice parameters are given in Table I. The alloy samples were prepared by arc melting metals having a purity of 99.9 pct or better. They were homogenized for 72 hr at 900°C in evacuated capsules and quenched in tap water. Filings were prepared, and these were reannealed for 4 hr at 700°C, also in evacuated tubes. The lattice parameters were determined by a least squares Bnalysis of the back reflection lines of patterns made with cobalt radiation. It was not possible to make a precise determination of the lattice parameters of Zr2Au because the filings underwent rapid oxidation at room temperature. The evidence supporting the large tetragonal cell containing 6 atoms involves the presence of the reflections 002, 101, 004, 112, 114, 202, and other reflections with higher indices for which I = 3n. Three or more reflections corresponding to these indices, which cannot be indexed on the basis of a small body-centered tetragonal cell containing 2 atoms, are observed in the patterns of all of the compounds listed in Table I. They are strongest and most numerous when the components have large differences in their atomic scattering factors, as is the case in Ti2Pd, Zr2Cu, and Hf2Cu. The values of the z parameter should be regarded as approximate They were selected on the basis of the best agreement between the observed intensities of two pairs of closely spaced powder pattern lines (004): (112) and (114): (202) and the corresponding intensities calculated for several values of z. An ordering scheme was assumed in which titanium, zirconium, or hafnium atoms occupy the titanium positions of Ti2Cu, and copper, silver, palladium, or gold atoms occupy the copper positions. Calculated and observed intensities of the aforementioned lines and the other lines of the patterns are in satisfactory agreement, but a refinement of the z parameters and a final confirmation of the ordering arrangement must await a more detailed study. Mine-to-mill studies have previously demonstrated downstream productivity benefits from relatively modest increases in blast energy, or powder factor. These increases have up to now been limited by safety and environmental constraints, since excessive blast energy can result in flyrock, unacceptable vibration, airblast and wall damage.Here, a new blasting method that overcomes these constraints is presented. For the first time it is possible to employ powder factors that are several fold higher than conventional blasting. Independent modelling has shown that such powder factors can potentially increase mill throughput by 20 to 40 per cent. The economic implications are substantial, both in terms of increasing production in existing operations and in consideration of capital and plant requirements for greenfield sites. In addition, mill electricity and grinding media consumption and their associated costs and energy and emissions penalties can be reduced.This method represents a step-change in blasting practices. It involves a novel design utilising dual blast layers within a single blast event, all initiated with state-of-the art electronic blasting systems. The energies in the lower layer can be as high as five times the standard energies, providing for intense fragmentation of the ore. Results from blast models have been confirmed in field trials of the method.Open cut gold mining, in particular, stands to benefit from this method. As gold grades decline, milling costs and throughput increasingly become constraints on production that can be alleviated with this new method. Additionally, it opens possibilities for improved recovery. Blast modelling studies show that dilution of gold ore within the blast can be managed with the new method. Furthermore, it has been shown that vibration from the new method is actually lower than from conventional blasting, allowing the use of the technique in proximity to mine highwalls and other key infrastructure such as underground orepasses.It is concluded that this new method could substantially increase gold mine production and profitability while reducing overall energy consumption and associated emissions.CITATION:Brent, G F, Dare-Bryan, P, Hawke, S and Rothery, M, 2013. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating methods for recovering tungsten from domestic resources. A calcine-quench-leach (CQL) technique was developed for the extraction of tungsten from the Golconda, Nevada, hot springs ores. The deposit contains disseminated tungsten, which cannot be beneficiated by conventional techniques and must be treated by hydrometallurgical methods. The CQL procedure consists of calcining the ore at 900° C for 3 hr, quenching in a solution containing 1.5 parts of NazCO3 and 1.5 parts of NaOH per part of WO3 in the ore and at a solution- to-ore ratio of 3 to 1, leaching at 200° C and at 250 psig for 3 hr, and filtering and washing the residue. A series of closed-circuit batch tests showed that 92 pct of the tungsten was extracted from a sample containing 2.32 pct WO3. The pregnant solution contained 11 q of W03/1.

Your interesting and well-written paper brings up the issue of the purpose or use of a mineral property appraisal, specifically the value of these evaluations when the quality and quantity of the mineral resource to be exploited have not been thoroughly investigated. I am not a practicing professional in regards to valuation of limestone investment opportunities. I simply wish to make a few generic observations about the appraisal process in order to stimulate meaningful thinking by appraisal professionals whose reports may be reviewed by professional investors and "laypersons" alike. It is my contention that the analysis given in your paper is very thorough, considering the data that was made available to you. But I would not like to be the person responsible for investment decision making without having a feel for the risk involved. Therefore, the reviewer must classify this type of analysis as relatively "subjective" because they have not received an indication of the inherent risk involved in exploiting a mineral resource. This risk can best be quantified by using probabilistic methods in conjunction with the quality and quantity of the mineral to be produced. Most appraisals passively ignore this problem. Specifically, you have accurately identified the various costs and values entering the economic appraisal process. These can usually be quantified with a great deal more certainty than the capability of the resource to provide 25 years of quality material. Also, in Cases A (West Virginia) and B (Alabama), you are fortunate enough to have previous operations data. What if there had never been production from these properties? How does a potential mineral property investor evaluate the resource capability to meet various projected financial outcomes without spending a good deal of up-front capital to drill and delineate enough quality resources for a 20-plus year operation.

More than 100,000 people from 110 countries involved in the construction aggregates and ready mix concrete industries are expected to attend Conexpo-Conlagg '99 in Las Vegas, NV March 23-27. The exhibition, the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, takes place every three years. It is held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas Hilton Center and Pavilion. The show serves as a venue for con- tractors and others involved in aggregates construction to view the latest in equipment, technology and services. More than 1,500 exhibitors will use more than 147,200 m2 (1.6 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibit space. Attendees include presidents and company owners, sales and marketing managers, general managers and project managers. An estimated 20% of the attendees will be from outside of the United States. New for the Conexpo-Conlagg '99 show is a 3,715- m2 (40,000-sq ft) Information Technology Pavilion. This event, organized by AIEIC Systems, will showcase computer technology for the architectural, engineering and construction industries. Shown in the pavilion will be the latest developments in cost management, estimating, bidding, project management and accounting. In addition, the Information Technology Pavilion will demonstrate the latest in computer-aided design software, systems and services. Conexpo-Codagg '99 will also emphasize live demonstrations of exhibitor's products. Individual exhibitors will demonstrate their machinery so attendees can see the latest technology in action. Because the Conexpo-Codagg exposition is so large, "shows within a show" have been created to help attendees locate the products and services best suited to their interests. Seven product concentration areas will be formed. Each area houses suppliers and manufacturers of similar products or services.

To clarify the specific questions raised by J. E. Warren's discussion, the following remarks are offered. 1. It is correct that stratification is assumed in the application of the statistical zonation technique, but this does not constitute a limitation. If, in fact, the reservoir is not stratified the zonation technique will show it. The reservoir is then considered as one zone with a particular distribution of permeabilities. 2. The statistical zonation technique was intended as wells may not be an adequate measure of the lateral permeability changes; e.g., if the data presented in Table A-4 of the subject paper are evaluated on the basis of two crossed classifications with interaction, the variation between zones is significant with a probability greater than .99; however, the variation betwen wells is also significant with a probability greater than .87. It is apparent that the technique suggested by the author can be generalized to provide a powerful method for describing petroleum reservoirs. This generalization can be achieved by treating the core data as a two-way classification to determine the between-zones and the between-wells variations; then, the build-up permeabilities can be analyzed, perhaps on at least-squares basis, to establish the probable distribution of the permeabilities within the zones associated with the individual wells. an additional tool for the reservoir engineer to use together with other techniques and all available information. If pressure build-up permeabilities are available, they should certainly be included. Pressure build-up tests were not available for the reservoir considered in the paper. 3. The proposed correlation of zones between adjacent wells was the best of the techniques that I examined. It is not so much a "measure" as an indication of lateral permeability changes, regardless of whether they are seemingly random or form an obvious trend.

Once the optimal time is found, it is possible also, to predict the vibration of the production shot (considering times and sequences) using predictive models. The waveform recorded includes information regarding the particle velocity and the dominant frequencies of the vibration.

STABILIZATION of the adjustment of normal consumption to normal production of world commodities is quite different from reducing production until visible surpluses are consumed. The first means restoration and maintenance of prosperity, the second means merely a temporary alleviation of a condition with the prime cause remaining uncorrected. Overproduction of foodstuffs in some sections of the world while millions starve in other sections represents not so much overproduction of foodstuffs as mal-distribution of foodstuffs. The flour mills of Washington and Oregon normally ship quantities of flour to China. Now, the wheat that would make this flour goes East instead of West. Is this overproduction, or is there something wrong that calls for study, analysis and correction? Can the plan used by the ostrich of hiding its head in. the sand get us by this present world tragedy, or must the challenge to solve this problem be met, constructively? Can we not make out of this breakdown in the world's economic system an opportunity? And use it as the stimulus for remedying the basic cause of the trouble and not content ourselves with devising temporary expedients that aim at remedying this or that of the obvious conditions, in themselves not causes at all but rather the evidence of causes, or that are the symptoms of the real trouble.

During the last ten years seven applications for nodule-bearing areas of the World Ocean Floor International Region (IR) have been made by national companies of Russia (Yuzhmorgeologiya), France (IFREMER/AFERNOD), Japan (DORD), India (The State Department of Sea Resources Development), China (COMRA), Korea (KORDI) and the Interokeanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) of some East European countries and have been registered by the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations International Seabed Authority (ISA). Besides these groups registered within Resolution 11 of the Final Act of the III United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea there are four international consortia registered in the USA [Kennecott (KCON), Ocean Mining Associates (DMA), Ocean Management Incorporated (OMI), and Ocean Minerals Company (OMCO)], which have interest in areas in the IR and can be considered as potential applicants. All registered areas (with the exception of the Indian Ocean) including the areas of potential applicants and also 6 areas, reserved for the ISA are located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean. If within each area not less than one deposit of polymetallic nodule-bearing ores can be discovered, then, the total number of such deposits, for the present moment, is 20.
