INTRODUCTION. IN India the production of mica, which in other countries is of very minor importance, is one of the staple, long established industries, and ranks high in the statistics of mineral products. Nearly two-thirds of the mica of commerce comes from India. The Indians have used mica for glazing and decorative purposes through many centuries. About 14,000 men are employed in and about the mines, and the indigenous and primitive mode of mining is still followed; but, by reason of the exhaustion of the surface supply hitherto won without intelligence or capital, it will not be many years before the present interesting and casual methods will be replaced by a less archaic and more profitable system. India on the whole has little mineral wealth, but the unique resources of its mica fields, cheap labor, and favorable natural conditions render it unlikely that any other country can ever more than temporarily contest her leadership in the production of this one minor but essential mineral. Mica plays a small but indispensable role in a variety of fields of dissimilar application. Its use and value depend upon characteristics which different kinds of mica have in varying degrees, each kind being adapted to 'its own special purpose. Its well-known characteristics of transparency, flexibility, elasticity, toughness, high dialectric, strength, perfect flatness; ease of splitting into thin films, ability to stand high heat and sudden changes in temperature, give it value in many industries. No other substance, natural or artificial, has this combination of qualities. The oldest use of mica is in glazing. Geostatistics was initially developed in the mining sector, but has been extended to other geoscience applications, including forestry, environmental science, soil science, and petroleum science and engineering. This paper presents methods, workflows, and pitfalls in using geostatistics for hydrocarbon resource modelling and evaluation. Examples are presented of indicator variogram analysis of categorical variables, lithofacies modelling by sequential indicator simulation and hierarchical workflow, porosity modelling by kriging and stochastic simulation, collocated cokriging for integrating seismic data, and collocated cosimulation for modelling porosity and permeability relationships. These methods together form a systematic approach that can be effectively used for modelling natural resources.

"A new model for internal oxidation, as well as similar processes, has been implemented on computer. It is based upon a combination of random walk and cellular automata and is capable of treating 3-dimensional cases. To model diffusion, it utilises quantised units of matter. All steps of the process are included: nucleation, growth and coarsening. The effect of grain boundaries on diffusion as well as nucleation is taken into account. Further possible development is briefly discussed; especially the treatment of nucleation needs further consideration. IntroductionComplex diffusion-controlled processes may now be simulated on a routine basis when concentration varies along one co-ordinate only. One-dimensional simulations capture much of the information of interest but not all. For the case at hand, especially the spatial and the size distribution of precipitates, as well as the impact of grain boundaries, would be interesting information not accessible from 1-D simulationsSolving the full Fick-Onsager law in three dimensions does not seem feasible with the computers of today. In the model described in this article, random walk by quantised units of matter are considered. The model should be useful for a number of cases involving dispersed systems. With further development, it would indeed seem possible to simulate most types of phase transformations.Previous workWe have previously published two articles [1,2] on the new approach discussed in this work. In those articles we described the basic idea and showed, among other things, that very good agreement with an experimental concentration profile can be obtained, in a single-phase system, using independently assessed thermodynamic and kinetic data. The McCracken and Stacey (1989) method of assessing geotechnical risk for largediameter raisebored shafts has been the basis for most Australian pre-construction raisebore investigations for the past 20 years. At the time of its publication, the McCracken and Stacey (M&S) Method did not include a database of raisebore diameter and rock mass conditions versus actual performance. It did, however, provide a chart that quantified geotechnical risk in terms of proposed shaft diameter and the raisebore rock quality index, QR. Two parameters, RQD/Jn and Jr/Ja were identified as being critical to raisebore stability, but the contribution of these to overall raisebore stability was not quantified. Peck and Lee (2008) published a database of raisebore performance from Australian case histories. Raisebore diameter and ground conditions, in terms of a Lower Bound QR value, were presented for 50 cases versus raisebore performance. This paper updates the database with further case histories and corrected SRF values. This paper further evaluates the reasons for the variable raisebore performance for similar RSR values. For all case histories, three parameters, RQD/Jn, Jr/Ja and Jw/SRF are investigated to assess their influence on raisebore performance.

THE heat-treatment of steels will not pass from the stage of an art into that of a science until the mechanism of the phase transformations associated therewith is thoroughly understood. Such an under- standing will involve two distinct types of inquiry: (I) the direction of the trans- formation, (2) the speed of the transformation. The first type of inquiry, which involves only the equilibrium relations between the various phases in steel, is the subject of the present and of a succeeding article; the second type, which involves the kinetics of transformations, will be the subject of a later article. In order that a theory of equilibrium relations may give useful information, certain experimental data must be put into the theory. It is customary for these data to be of a thermal nature. In the system discussed here in steel such thermal data are very scarce. In medium-alloy steels another type of data might possibly be used. In these steels the concentration of solute is so low that it may be possible to use the approximation of dilute solutions, an approximation that leads to linear relationships. The unknown functions, or constants, may then be determined in some cases from the binary iron- alloy system and in other cases from the ternary iron-carbon-alloy system. From the functions, or constants, so determined may then be computed the equilibrium relations in more complex medium-alloy steels. In the present article this second approach is used, the necessary experimental data being obtained from the simple binary and ternary equilibrium diagrams. FUNDAMENTAL EQUATIONS In this article are derived the equilibrium relations between the gamma, alpha and cementite phases. In these three phases all important alloying elements except carbon form substitutional solutions, each alloying atom occupying a potential site for an iron atom. Carbon, on the other hand, forms an interstitial solution. In the face-centered cubic gamma phase, the interstitial positions are at the center of the unit cube and at the centers of the cube edges. There are therefore four interstitial positions per unit cell, or one per iron atom. In the body- centered cubic alpha phase, the interstitial positions are probably at the face centers, and also at the centers of the edges, which are crystallographically equivalent to the face centers. There are therefore six interstitial positions per unit cube, or three per iron atom. In cementite, (Fe, Alloy)3C, the carbon atoms may be regarded as filling all the lattice positions of a given type. The introduction of the fundamental equations of equilibrium has presented the author with a quandary. It is well accepted that the blast furnace will continue as the main route for iron-making for many more years. However, its limitations have motivated researchers to look for alternative routes, particularly, those where non-coking coal is used for liquid iron production. Smelting reduction (SR), where coal and oxygen are used to produce liquid iron and power is now receiving serious attention. Several smelting reduction reactors are now operating in pilot plant scale and one or two have reached commercial status.

A great variety of substance that differ widely in chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties are loosely linked under the generic term "clay", but for the average man all that matters is whether a given material can be sold or used profitably. So-called "clays" range in texture from true clays and allied minerals that are typically "fat" or sticky to fine sand. Sand and other strictly silicious materials, such as tripoli and diatomite, are not clays in any sense; but many commercial clays are strictly loams, for they are intermediate in texture and always contain a mixture of minerals, though the term "loam" has little commercial usage except in foundry work. Even pure kaolinite, ordinarily considered the typical "clay substance", recently was found to exist as three distinct minerals; and each of these, in turn, exhibits variations in particle size and other physical attributes. Probing with the X-ray and employing other modern tools and techniques, scientists are tracing the patterns of molecules and finding chemical and physical phenomena that seem to disclose the causes for the markedly different behavior of the various aluminum silicates with varying proportions of combined and adsorbed water that are the essential ingredients of commercial clays; but rule-of-thumb definitions and enforced reliance upon empirical tests of actual samples still hold sway. In addition to the hydrated simple silicates of aluminum, almost all clays contain quartz, feldspar, and mica with varying amounts of organic matter and, in addition, other impurities - such as iron, manganese, and titanium oxides - that may discolor them sufficiently to render them unfit for certain important uses. The white clays are generally the purest, but no two clays are really alike, and great care must be exercised to maintain a reasonable uniformity in successive shipments even from the same deposit.

Vários motivos levaram a priorizarem o uso de fibras naturais em detrimento do uso de fibras sintéticas, sobretudo as razões sociais e ambientais. A fibra deste trabalho é extraída da folha da planta - Furcraea Andina (da Colômbia, onde usam esta fibra para a produção de artesanatos e sacos) e demonstra um grande potencial como reforço de compósitos poliméricos. Este trabalho avaliará o teste de impacto de Izod e Charpy de compósitos com matriz epóxi reforçada com diferentes porcentagens de fibras. Para os testes, as fibras de fique foram misturadas com à resina epóxi em um molde metálico retangular, o conjunto foi submetido a uma pressão e sofreram um processo de cura à temperatura ambiente durante 24 horas. As amostras produzidas foram submetidas aos ensaios seguindo a norma ASTM D256 (Método de Ensaio Padrão para à Determinação da Resistência ao Impacto do Pêndulo Izod para Plásticos) e a norma ASTM D6110 (Método de Ensaio Padrão para Determinar a Resistência ao Impacto Charpy para Plásticos). Os compósitos continham até 30% em volume de fibras de fique, que foram alinhadas ao longo de todo o comprimento da matriz. As amostras submetidas à ambos os ensaios (Izod e Charpy) tiveram suas fraturas analisadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Houve um aumento significativo da resistência ao impacto de acordo com o aumento da porcentagem volumétrica das fibras de fique. Esse desempenho pode estar associado ao mecanismo de fratura gerado a partir da adesão entre as fibra de fique e a matriz colaborando na absorção da energia de impacto, além do fato de que a fibra é capaz de dificultar a ruptura das amostras.

"This paper, an overview of our recent findings on mechanical activation (MA) of minerals/materials, emphasizes the importance of sample genesis, mechanically induced/altered porosity and surface area, mineral interactions, glassy inorganic materials, surface alteration and zeta potential changes and, mechanically induced reactivity of solids. Materials investigated include Al-oxyhydroxides (gibbsite and boehmite), fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag. Planetary, attrition, vibratory and conventional ball mills are used for MA. Genesis of boehmite has been found to have a bearing on its behavior during MA. For example, BET specific surface area (SSA) of boehmite prepared by thermal dehydroxylation of gibbsite has decreased from 265 to 65 m2/g during 240 min of MA; in contrast, the SSA of hydrothermal boehmite has increased from ~2 to 36 m2/g. Mechanisms of surface area changes in the two boehmite samples differing in their genesis is explored. MA of gibbsite and its mixture with hematite/quartz using attrition milling has indicated that the presence of the second phase promotes amorphisation. Amorphous materials show signs of change in nature of bonding during milling as illustrated by MA of fly ash. Physicochemical changes during MA are not restricted to the bulk phase. The genesis of zeta potential changes in MA solids can be many; for example texture induced zeta potential changes as observed for gibbsite, while zeta potential changes during the milling of granulated blast furnace slag occur due to enhanced (possibly non-congruent) dissolution. Interesting manifestations of mechanically induced reactivity and its correlation with physicochemical changes are illustrated in terms of alkali leaching of boehmite and, hydration of MA slag. New findings reported here are associated with several open questions and are highlighted in the paper."

Effective strata control, utilising fully encapsulated roof bolts, is dependent on the installed quality of the reinforcement elements. One mechanism by which fully encapsulated roof bolts may become less than fully effective is by gloving (glove fingering) and un-mixing of the resin. Following some small roof failures containing gloved bolts, investigations have been undertaken in some New Zealand coal mines to determine the extent of, and mechanisms involved in, the gloving of fully encapsulated roof bolts for a range of roof types and installation methods. Gloving, in this context, refers to the resin cartridge partially or completely enveloping a length of the bolt, typically with unmixed resin filler and catalyst/hardener remaining within the cartridge. Results have shown that gloving and un-mixing is a systematic and widespread phenomena, occurring across a range of resin and/or bolt manufacturers, and across a variety of roof types. Gloving was found in bolts installed using: hand held pneumatic and continuous miner mounted hydraulic methods, under run of mine (ROM) conditions by mine workers, and under controlled "best practice" conditions. The roofs bolts investigated are all 1800mm (6ft) long, and have shown that, on average, 485mm (-19") of the bolt length is gloved and/or unmixed. This equates to a 27 percent reduction in effective bolt length. The effected length of bolt is sufficient to impact on the load transfer/reinforcement capabilities of the bolt system, and hence impacts on the design assumptions and subsequent stability assessments. Furthermore, there is a direct relationship between the mechanism for the gloving of bolts and an increased occurrence of resin loss and reduction in encapsulations length in soft (less than 10 MPa) and/or highly fractured rock. Investigations have concentrated on developing an understanding of the mechanisms involved. This has been undertaken using both field installations and recovered bolts, as well as test bench trials. The mechanisms involved have been confirmed as being: the development of a pressure front as the bolt encounters the resin and is spun up the hole, which, in turn, leads to over-pressurisation and radial expansion of the resin cartridge, resulting in an increase in diameter of the plastic resin cartridge, which allows the bolt to be spun up into the cartridge without making sufficient contact to shred the cartridge or the hardener tube, resulting in an unmixed portion of resin.

investigations have been undertaken into the flow characteristics of mineral slurries from a number of Australian metallurgical plants including Mount Isa Mines Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and Broken Hill South Ltd. Experimental equipment installed for this work included facilities for continuous recording of flow rate and pressure drop and detection of sedimentation.Although the method has subsequently been described in published literature, it is believed that the investigations included the original application of a method for correlation of the flow rate and pressure drop data. This method depends on solving by graphical methods the values of the constants k, and c in the relationship EQUATION 1 where D is pipe diameter; ?P, pressure drop; L, length; and V, mean linear velocity. Discussion of this correlation also reveals why sedimentation velocity does not necessarily vary greatly with pipe diameter.INTRODUCTIONIn order to design pumps and pipeline installations for a Newtonian fluid, measurements of the fluid's density and viscosity in any of a number of instruments are sufficient. Substitution of these values in well known equations to calculate Reynolds numbers and subsequent correlation to determine friction factors are all that is required for engineering specification.As a result of work during the last decade, particularly that of Metzner and Reed (1955) and Dodge and Metzner (1959), it is now possible to design for homogeneous non-Newtonian fluids using relatively simple instrumental measurements.These methods can sometimes be applied to thick slurries which behave as if homogeneous. The analysis of piled raft foundations in layered soils may be performed by 3D finite elements or by approximate procedures. Among the latter, the code NAPRA (Russo, 1998) is based on the method of the interaction factors and accounts for soil layering by the so called Steinbrenner approximation. A comparison between the results of 3D FEM and NAPRA for some reference layered soil profiles shows that the approximation is fully acceptable for engineering purposes, provided the stiffness of the single pile is properly selected. The interest of the conclusion lies in the fact that the amount of work needed to model a practical problem by NAPRA is but a fraction of that needed by FEM modelling.

"The Venturi-aerated flotation column (VAC) is based on a reactor and separator design for a new generation of flotation machines. The reactor is a Venturi tube, where the air/slurry contact takes place with intensive aeration for efficient particle collection. The separator is a column of 1-3 m length that provides quiescent hydrodynamic conditions for effective separation of bubble-particle aggregates from the remaining slurry.Aeration in the Venturi tube occurs via two mechanisms: air dispersion and nucleation (cavitation). By forcing air through a restricted passage with a fast flowing slurry stream, air is dispersed into fine bubbles. Bubble formation due to cavitation occurs on the surface of particles in the low-pressure section of the Venturi, from dissolved air contained in the liquid.Size-by-size recovery and flotation rate constants were determined for a small-scale laboratory Venturi-aerated flotation column. The results were compared to those obtained in a laboratory 2.2 L Denver cell. It is shown that the Venturi-aerated flotation column has slightly slower flotation kinetics to the Denver cell, but with much higher flotation selectivity. A portable Venturi-aerated flotation column can effectively be used to investigate process or equipment problems in operating plants.INTRODUCTIONFlotation processes can generally be divided into two sub-processes: 1) selective collection of hydrophobic particles by air bubbles and 2) separation of bubble-particle aggregates from hydrophilic particles that remain in the pulp. The methods of aeration, or bubble generation, control the mechanism of particle collection by either collision with, and subsequent attachment to bubbles, or by in situ bubble formation on the surfaces of hydrophobic particles. A flotation device should provide optimal aeration conditions for efficient particle collection and a suitable hydrodynamic environment for effective removal of bubble-particle aggregates from the remaining pulp."

Many conventional structural analysis and design methods in current use are not appropriate for the mining industry. Two major reasons for this are that: • The economic life of a particular mine is limited, and • Much of the equipment and machinery used by the mining industry operates at relatively low speeds. Both of these factors can have significant cost implications if they are not properly accounted for during plant design. In particular, the often used practice of mitigating excessive vibration by adding mass to machinery supports is not only expensive but may worsen the vibration effects. Some of these problems, such as increased wear and tear, are not always easy to trace back to inappropriate design. This article focuses on vibration related issues and demonstrates that the mining sector has unique problems requiring unique solutions. Vibration: the basics Historic developments leading to current vibration design practices provide the key to why such practices are often inappropriate for the mining industry. To understand this, it is necessary to introduce some basic vibration theory. Consider a simply supported beam or foundation on which a vibrating machine is mounted. For analysis of the system's dynamic response, it may be viewed as a mass attached to a spring and a damper, such as the shock absorber of a car.

The project now under construction will comprise a 1.2 km long raw water aqueduct, a major new 0.25million cubic metres per day water treatment works (with space for upgrading to 1.2Mm³/d), a 12.1 km long treated water aqueduct and a primary service reservoir. The systems of geophysical monitoring have been already put into operation at coal mines and ore mines. Since at present it is rather difficult to conduct mine experiments; it is necessary to start a new step in joining of geomechanics and seismic. The linking geomechanical and geophysical monitoring at coal mines and ore mines today became possible due to progress in development of numerical methods of modeling of stress state and technology for processing of seismic information. This paper describes one potential step in linking geomechanical and seismic monitoring at coal mines and ore mines.

Indonesia is the second largest coal exporter to Japan, accounting for about 30 M tons annually. They produced about 150 M tons in 2005, over 99% of which being from open-cut mines [1]. However, the conditions of surface mining are becoming worse each year: the stripping ratio is increasing, approaching the economic ratio and the infrastructure for coal transportation from inland mining areas is insufficient for such intense mining operations. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. At present, there are only five small underground mines, three of which are old and the other two have only recently begun mining operations [2]. However, severe ground control problems have been occurring regularly, roof falls in particular. At a new mine developed from the highwall, a large bolted roof fall occurred at the heading face, killing two miners. Unfortunately, mining engineers and/or miners in this mine do not have a lot of experiences, expertise and know-how concerning the operations of underground coal mines. Since 2001, Japan has started a ?five-year plan for coal technology transfer? to fill Japan?s moral obligation as the largest coal importer in the world. The research team for this accident was organized and the on-site investigation was conducted in order to find the cause of this accident and make the solution. This paper describes the roof fall accident at the mine, discusses its causes and mechanism and suggests the introduction of some techniques for improving the current support system considering the strata and stress conditions by means of field observation and finite element modeling.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a reconnaissance of the less accessible parts of the Beluga River coalfield in August 1957 to determine, if possible, which areas were most favorable for developing large reserves of coal suitable for open-pit mining. Several outcrops of subbituminous coal were observed within an area about 30 miles long and 3 miles wide; neither the length nor the width of the coal-bearing area was delineated by the examination. Coal beds 30 feet thick or more outcrop at two places, and beds 5 to 20 feet thick or more outcrop fairly abundantly along the Beluga River and its tributaries The coal measures appear to occur in a series of folds. The overburden comprises glacial gravels and poorly cemented sandstones and ranges from 20 to 400 feet in depth. Few partings were seen in any of the coal beds. Samples ranged in calorific value from 6,240 to 8,246 B. t. u. on an as-received basis. Adequate water is available for stripping by hydraulic methods.
