FINE IRON ORES, and concentrates such as those produced from taconite, must be converted to lump form by some process of agglomeration before they can be used effectively in the blast furnace or open hearth. At the present time, four major processes for agglomerating these materials are being used on a commercial scale: sintering, nodulizing, pelletizing and briquetting. IN 1945 U. S. Steel Corp. through its subsidiary the Oliver Iron Mining Div., drew up tentative plans for an agglomerating plant on the Mesabi Range which would include a nodulizing kiln and a sintering machine. The purpose of the plant was two- fold: during its initial operation it would provide data on agglomeration of high grade ore fines, and would help relieve the shortage of ore for open hearth charging. Subsequently, it would be available for agglomerating taconite concentrates. While operating on fines screened from direct ore, it was planned to develop techniques and personnel so that a workable plant would be ready to handle taconite concentrates when the time came.

Surface subsidence resulting from "total extraction" of coal in the Collie Basin first occured in 1987 when Western Collieries Ltd trialed the Wongawilli mining method. Because very little quantitative subsidence data existed for the weak, Permian sediments, a research program was set up prior to the extraction of the first panel. The objective of the study was to be able to predict subsidence characteristics and effects prior to mining future total extraction panels. Attempts at predicting subsidence began using existing subsidence models from other coal mining regions, however, as more site information became available, it became clear that it was necessary to develop a separate, site specific predictive model for the Collie Coal Basin. Analysis of extensive field monitoring data for both surface and subsurface subsidence has produced a series of empirical models which can predict the shape of surface subsidence troughs and corresponding tills, and strains for rectangular panels and describe the sequences of ground movement from the mine root through to the ground surface. The fact that both subsurface and surface subsidence characteristics have tied in well, gives greater confidence for predictions made from these models

Heavy mineral deposits are becoming more complex in terms of their compositional variation, particle mineralogy and size distributions, and present challenges for the operation of separation equipment to achieve the required grades and recoveries. Changes in equipment design and concepts potentially provide new opportunities for the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands deposits. The development of a framework for the fundamental understanding of separator performance issues is a first step to develop new machines. This paper will present a first step analysis of electro-static and magnetic separation machines with their application to real separation scenarios.

Eighty-four quaternary titanium-base alloys from the following systems were investigated: 1. Titanium-chromium-carbon-nitrogen. 2. Titanium-chromium-carbon with copper, vanadium, molybdenum, manganese, iron, or nickel. 3. Titanium-chromium-nitrogen with vanadium, molybdenum, or nickel. The tensile properties, minimum bend radii, hardnesses, response to heat treatment and aging treatment, and phase relationships of these alloys are reported. HIS paper is the third in a series describing J- titanium-base alloys. The first paper describingdescribed titanium binary alloys, and the second contained data on a large number of titanium ternary alloys. Eighty-four heats, comprising three groups of quaternary titanium-base alloys, are described in this paper as follows: 1. Titanium-chromium-carbon-nitrogen alloys. 2. Titanium-chromium-carbon alloys containing copper, vanadium, molybdenum, manganese, iron, or nickel. 3. Titanium-chromium-nitrogen alloys containing vanadium, molybdenum, or nickel. The methods of preparing, fabricating, and testing the alloys are described in the paper Binary Titanium Alloys. Quaternary Titanium - Chromiurn - Carbon -Nitrogen Alloys The properties of titanium-chromium-nitrogen and titanium-chromium-carbon ternary alloys have been described in the paper Ternary Alloys of Titanium. Because small amounts of nitrogen and carbon both appear to be somewhat beneficial, these additions have been investigated fairly completely in quaternary alloys containing chromium at the following levels of composition: 2.5, 3.5, and 5.0 pct chromium 0.25 and 0.5 pct carbon 0.1 and 0.2 pct nitrogen Mechanical Properties: The mechanical properties of these alloys are listed in table I. Fig. 1 and 2 show graphically a comparison of the tensile properties and hardnesses of quaternary alloys with those of the titanium-chromium binary alloys. Fig. 1 shows the comparison at 0.25 pct carbon, whereas fig. 2 shows the comparison at 0.5 pct carbon. It is concluded from these data that 0.25 pct carbon and 0.1 pct nitrogen are desirable additions to the 5 pct chromium-titanium base. It is further concluded that most of this improvement is produced by the nitrogen and that carbon is either harmless or mildly beneficial, at least up to 0.25 pct. Structure and Transformation Range: The effects of carbon and nitrogen on the transformation range of the titanium-chromium alloys were determined as part of the routine investigation. Additions of 0.25 pct carbon and 0.1 pct nitrogen had no appreciable effect upon the transformation range. However, the addition of 0.25 pct carbon and 0.2 pct nitrogen definitely raised the beta solvus temperature, as shown by fig. 3.

Falconbridge Limited operates a smelter in Sudbury, consisting of fluid bed roasters, acid plant, electric furnaces and Peirce-Smith converters, to treat local concentrate and other custom materials. The products are a low iron, nickel- copper-cobalt matte and sulphuric acid. This paper describes the operation and highlights some of the recent efforts to improve human resource effectiveness, to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions and ground level concentration excursions, to develop and expand the custom feed business, to improve productivity and performance in safety and hygiene, and to improve furnace integrity and process control.

"A set of Al-Co binary alloys (with respectively in weight percent 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% Co) have been studied by X-ray diffraction at the as compacted state. The structural evolution according to cobalt addition shows special features as the apparition of fcc cobalt and hcp cobalt beside aluminium in some cobalt compositions of the Al-Co mixtures using only cold compaction without sintering at high temperature. Figure 1 Cobalt is not a common alloying element in aluminium because its solubility is very low [1]. According to the pressure-temperature phase diagram, Co is known to exist in two allotropic forms: a low-temperature hcp phase and a high-temperature fcc phase [2-3]. At room temperature, Co is stable in the hcp form but it transforms to the fcc form when it is heated to above the transition temperature 695K. Powder aluminium and cobalt (99.999 %) were used in the proportions defined according to the required compositions. The total mass of the samples to be elaborated was between 8 g and 10 g. Cold compaction of mixed powder (Al-Co) under an uniaxial load of 10 MPa has been achieved to obtain a dense product (60%)."

The Ashanti mine is located within the Lower Proterozoic Birimian of Ghana, and covers a concession of 474 square kilometres at its Obuasi operations which comprise large scale underground, surface and tailings treatment facilities. The mine had operated for a century at the end of 1997 and had produced nearly 25 million ounces of gold, a significant proportion of which came from the underground operations. This paper covers the strategy under which exploration for both surface and underground mineral resources was instrumental in enabling the expansion programme to go ahead together with the methodologies and results that have developed in the exploration area over the last five years. Within capital expenditure constraints, the objective on surface is to replace oxide depletion with a secondary objective of discovering new sulphides in areas other than the main trend. In the underground, the exploration strategy is directed at replacement of both underground and surface sulphide depletion, minimising finding costs and assisting the development of long lead time infrastructure. The exploration application describes the methodologies in use for both surface and underground exploration that have been developed in recent years in conjunction with a description of a major review conducted in 1995/96 of the exploration database using an integrated approach, geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing and structural geology. A revisit of soil geochemical data in particular, and modification of exploration methodology led to the success in finding relatively significant new oxides in 1997.

"Cadmium sulfide (CdS) in the form of thin films is an interesting material because it has a large variety of applications ranging from photovoltaic to luminescent devices. N-type CdS is usually used as a window layer in the heterojunction CdS/CdTe thin film solar cells. A review of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra ofn-type CdS thin films prepared by different techniques was performed. The effects of different dopants and impurities and the effects of temperature and deposition parameters on the PL spectra were discussed. Annealing in different atmospheres causes the changes in material structure and phase change from cubic to hexagonal phase which can be detected through the variations in the PL spectra. CdCh heat treatment improves the cystallinity of the films and enhances the exciton peaks and the green band in the PL spectra.IntroductionThin CdS films deserve attention because their expected gap emission lies very close to the highest sensitivity of the human eye. Thus, one might assume that thin CdS films are an appealing host for photonic devices [ l]. They have been used in a lot of applications including electronic and optoelectronic devices [2]. Thin films ofn-type CdS are widely used as a window layer in heterojunction solar cells such as CdS/CdTe solar cells. Doped and undoped CdS thin films can be obtained by different techniques such as; spray pyrolysis (SP) [3], chemical bath deposition (CBD) [2, 4], pulsed laser deposition [5, 6, 7], laser ablation [l], thermal evaporation [8].Several experimental techniques have been used in order to study semiconductor defects. In particular, photoluminescence (PL) has been shown as a powerful and sensitive tool in examining the crystal quality of polycrystalline thin films. PL can be used in the detection of defects which are radiative active. These defects can also act as traps in the transport of carriers [9]. The photoluminescence (PL) of thin film CdS is strongly influenced by the unbalanced stoichiometry, which is typical for CdS and is in general evoked by a Cd surplus. With increasing Cd content, the emission spectra move far below the gap to the red spectral range. Besides stoichiometry problems, independent of the material deposited, the PL properties of thin films depend on surface features and the influence of the interface between the film material and the substrate [10]."

As part of its investigation of methods of increasing the efficiency of fuel resources, the Bureau of Mines is continuing the study of the general problems involved in the economic use of fuels in gas pro- ducers that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. In the course of this study many inci- dental problems of prime importance have demanded consideration. Among them is the determination, under practically constant con- ditions, of the duration of gas-producer tests necessary to reduce the possible error to a minimum. A discussion of this proper length of test period forms the first part of this bulletin. An attempt to dispel some of the uncertainties that arise in an investigation or to account for some of the minor phenomena often necessitates a systematic and careful study of certain chemical, ther- modynamic, or physical laws, or a combination of these, which in turn may result in information or conclusions of great value. Fur- thermore, seemingly unimportant observations often prove to bear directly upon the design, construction, or manipulation of the machine under test. In attempts to improve the gas producer considerable attention has been given by manufacturers to such questions as fixing or isolating the combustible components of the tar, utilizing the waste heat of the producer for the generation of the steam required by the plant, apply- ing the suction principle to bituminous coal and other tarry fuels, and many allied subjects. Little study, apparently, has been given to the physical-chemical conditions most suitable to the formation of hydro- gen and of carbon monoxide, with a view to regulating the percentages of these gases in generators using fuels other than anthracite coal or charcoal. An attempt was made to introduce such investigations when the operations of the government coal-testing plant began at the Louisi- ana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904, but owing to adverse conditions these problems were abandoned until the plant was trans- ferred to Norfolk in 1907. The delay in beginning this line of inves- tigations, together with the short testing season at Norfolk, limit the second part of this report to preliminary physical-chemical studies, which, however, were sufficiently significant to warrant careful ex- amination pending more complete researches, which are being carried on at the station located in Pittsburg.

The by-product molybdenite technology in Chile is reviewed. Flowsheets, reagents and some operation features for the actual six Chilean moly plants(Chuquicamata, El Teniente, El Salvador, Andina, Las Tortolas and Pelambres), are presented. The chemical and physicochemical factors involved in the depression of copper and iron sulfides during the selective flotation of molybdenite, with sodium sulfide, sodium sulfhydrate, anamol-D and LR-744, are discussed. Advances in technology to solve problems of excess of lime (precipitation with sulfuric acid); excess of residual flotation reagents (activated carbon and kerosene); and optimization of depressant consumption (Eh control, nitrogen and low-oxygen air), are discussed.

Early Proterozoic ore deposits in the Verde district at Jerome, Arizona have produced 33.7 million metric tons of ore (1893-1975). The United Verde and United Verde Extension deposits produced most of the ore that yielded 1,644,323,100 kg Cu plus large amounts of Au, Ag, and Zn. These deposits are situated on the fractured and hydrothermally altered apex of a large submarine rhyolitic extrusive (Cleopatra formation). Precambrian lithologies are penetratively deformed and at Jerome the Fl folds plunge steep to the NNW. For the past two decades the volcanogenic model has superseded the replacement theory of ore formation.

A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974, was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (DEI) on research and development. for laboratory, field and other engineering studies on the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included discussions on the peculiarities of retorted shale materials to be investigated and discussions of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The proposed research and development program was divided into eight work phases as follows: I Program Development. II Exploratory Laboratory Tests on Old U.S.B.M. Retorted Shale. III Laboratory Tests on Pilot Plant Retorted Shales, IV Laboratory Tests on Retorted Shale from the Semi-Works Plant, Field, Test Plots and Ponds. V Field Compaction Tests. Several laboratory model test results for the determination of the ultimate uplift capacity of single and group metal piles embedded in near-saturated clay have been presented. Based on the uplift test results for single piles, the variation of the adhesion factor with the undrained shear strength of clay has been determined, and an empirical correlation for estimation of the adhesion factor in soft and medium clays has been presented. The group efficiency of piles under uplifting load depends on factors such as embedment ratio, undrained shear strength of clay, the number of piles in a group, and the center-to-center spacing of the piles.

"Construction of underground excavations in squeezing ground conditions faces several technical challenges that can result in delays in production and high costs due to rehabilitation. A review of the behaviour of drifts under squeezing ground conditions was undertaken at the LaRonde mine. In particular it focused on implemented strategies to control the observed large deformations. The mine experiences a large range of squeezing ground conditions, mostly driven by the presence of foliation and high stresses. This results in large deformations over one meter in radius. A comprehensive ground control strategy has been implemented with the aim to manage, rather than arresting drift closure. The evolution and effectiveness of the employed support strategy are discussed based on documented field observations. In complement to the field implementation numerical models are used to provide further insight on the observed squeezing conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe development of underground excavations under squeezing ground conditions is usually associated with excessive rehabilitation and significant failure of ground support due to large deformations. Cost research case studies have concentrated on squeezing ground conditions in tunnelling. An overview of the methods used for the identification and quantification of squeezing and the numerical methods for the simulation of these conditions in tunnelling has been provided by Barla (2002). Numerous support systems that can manage ground deformation are available for civil engineering tunnelling. Nevertheless, the use of these systems in mining would result in high support cost and production delays. Mining operations have higher development rates and shorter service life. This study focuses on the behaviour of underground excavations under squeezing ground conditions in hard rock mining.In a mining context, the magnitude of deformation is usually higher than in civil engineering tunnelling as there is a higher tolerance for operation purposes. Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou (2008) noted that in mining, squeezing is encountered when the total displacement of an excavation reaches at least tens of centimeters over the life expectancy of a supported drive and is associated with considerable damage to the ground support."

First response to large-scale water flooding in the fractured very low permeability Spraberry sand has led to a new unique cyclic operation. Capacity water injection is used to restore reservoir pressure. This is followed by marly months production without water irzjection and the cycle repeated. Expansion of the oil, rock and water during pressure decline expels part of the fluids but capillary forces hold much of the injected water in the rock. At least with reservoir pressure restored and with partial water flood development, field performance has proved this cyclic operation is capable of producing oil from the nzatrix rock at least 50 per cent faster and with lower water percentage than is imbibition of water at stable reservoir pressure. INTRODUCTION The Spraberry Field of West Texas presents unusual problems for both primary production and water flooding. Extensive interconnected vertical fractures in the fractional-md sandstone permitted recovery of oil on 160-acre well spacing, but they made capillary end effects dominant. Primary recovery by solution gas drive is less than 10 per cent of oil in place. The concept of displacement of oil from the sand matrix by capillary irnbibition of water has led to field techniques which promise greatly increased oil recovery. Free exchange of laboratory research, reservoir information and results of field pilot tests among the various companies has been very important in development of this technology. Five units covering a total of 170,000 acres have been formed for water flooding, and 10 other areas covering an additional 175,500 acres are in various stages of unitization. Part of the Driver Unit reaching fillup first has demonstrated very unusual waterflood behavior and indicated numerous operating problems that will develop within and among the various units. SPRABERRY ROCK AND PRIMARY PERFORMANCE The Spraberry, discovered in February, 1949, is a 1,000-ft section of sandstones, shales and limestones with two main oil productive members: a 10-15 ft sand near the top and a 10-15 ft sand near the base. In part of the field some thinner intermediate sands are oil productive, and others are water bearing. All sands have permeabilities of 1 md or less and porosities of 8-15 per cent. Ordinary core analysis and electric and radiation logs are ineffective in differentiating between oil productive and nonprcductive sands. Sands capable of containing producible oil are best identified by mercury injection capillary pressure measurement and, in some cases, by core water saturation. About 3,500 wells have been drilled in the 500,000-acre trend. Vertical fractures were observed in practically all Spraberry cores. Continuity and interconnection of fractures were confirmed by pressure interference among wells during early development.' Major fractures trend northeast-southwest as indicated by oriented cores and confirmed by five fluid injection tests, by analysis of the pressure transients observed during development,''' and by three interference tests in the Driver Unit Water Flood reported herein. Fracture spac- ing probably averages inches to a few feet. Spraberry wells typically produced 100-400 BOPD initially after hydrauLic fracture treatments. By 1962 oil production had declined to an average of 12 bbl/well/day, near the economic Limits of operation. Reservoir pressure had declined from 2,300 psi initially in the Upper Spraberry and 2,500 psi in the Lower Spraberry to 500-1,000 psi. Partial closing of the fractures with declining reservoir pressure is believed to be the cause of such low oil production rates at these relatively high reservoir pressures. Cumulative recovery of 208 million bbl of oil is 80 to 90 per cent of that recoverable by primary means. Performance of the entire reservoir is summarized in Fig. 1. IMBIBITION WATER FLOODING By 1952 reservoir performance indicated low primary recoveries. Most engineers, expecting serious channeling of injected fluids through the fractures, held little hope for secondary recovery. With its extensive background of research on the fundamentals of fluid flow within reservoir rocks, Atlantic's Research and Development Division on short notice in 1952 conceived that displacement of oil by capillary imbibition of water into the rock might significantly increase Spraberry recovery. Laboratory data reported by Brownscombe and Dyes scaled to probable reservoir conditions showed potential waterflood recovery equal to or greater than primary recovery with a 10-15 year flood life.= A pilot test using three 40-acre injection wells, one central producing well and 18 surrounding observation wells demonstrated technical feasibility of the process. Success of the Gold Line Eastside Extension rail tunnels in Los Angeles has prompted Metro?s planning for two new rail lines to include underground alternatives. The Westside Extension Transit Corridor alternatives include up to 17 miles of subway to be constructed in soft ground. The routes will require construction in Los Angeles? ?Potential Methane Zone,? not considered for subway construction until recently. Slurry face TBMs will likely be specified. The Regional Connector, through the downtown area, includes one underground alternative with 1.7 miles of tunnel as well as three underground stations in soft ground and rock. Challenges will include tunnel and station construction under narrow streets. This paper will describe the alternatives, planning, geologic conditions and tunneling concepts for both planning studies.

Introduction Mine operators are interested in energy conversation in two ways. With our finite sources of energy, we are concerned for future generations. In addition, as mine operators, we want to minimize energy costs. Moving material represents a substantial amount of the energy used in mining operations. Wheeled vehicles are used extensively to move materials. And they derive all their energy from fuel. Energy is also required to overcome the vehicle's inertia, and internal and external frictional forces. Included in the vehicle's frictional forces is its suspension. Tires are an important part of this suspension. What influence do tires have on the overall fuel consumption of the vehicle? Does tire construction affect this influence? As far back as 1896, it was apparent that tires were a factor in fuel consumption. A test was devised in France using a coal-fueled steam-driven auto. The test measured whether there was any fuel savings with the new pneumatic tires rather than of the then commonly used solid tires. The result was a 28% savings in water and a 29% savings in coal on pneumatic tires. Today, the pneumatic tire is accepted, but there are differences in present constructions. Tire Construction: Bias vs Radial There are basically two types of tire construction, bias and radial. Bias tires have been around for about 60 years. Radial tires are more recent. They were developed to improve a tire's ability to withstand higher speeds and loads, as well as to improve tire life and vehicle handling. Another advantage of the radial tire is its lower rolling resistance. This characteristic results in lower fuel use by a vehicle. This has been demonstrated with passenger cars and over-the-road trucks. It is now being demonstrated with earthmoving equipment. A basic description of both types of tire construction should now be reviewed: The casing of a bias-ply tire is made up of crisscrossed textile plies or layers. The cords of these plies run on a bias, from bead to bead. The cords of each ply run on an angle relative to the cords of the adjacent plies. As the tire rolls and deflects, the angle between the cords changes, like the blades on scissors (Fig. 1). The cords of one ply pull one way, and the adjacent ply pulls another, straining each other.
