The medical evaluation of the health effects of dust exposure in the mining industry should be based on the premise that the results of the medical examinations will be considered in relation to the previous history of exposure to dust.(l) To this end the Mines Regulation Act and the Regulations under that Act in West- ern Australia provide for: the prime responsibility for dust sampling to rest with the mining companies; the appointment of a Ventilation officer by each mine and the sampling and record- ing by him of dust and toxic gases in work places at three monthly intervals, or more frequently as required; the appointment of a Mines Medical Officer who shall make provision for the medical examination of persons and the prevention of occupational diseases; the appointment of a Ventilation Board, consisting of the State Mining Engineer, the Senior Inspector of Mines for the State, an Inspector of Mines having specialised training in ventilation tech- nology, a medical practitioner having specialised experience in occupational health problems relevant to the mining industry, and a Scientific Officer having duties under the provisions of the Clean Air Act, 1964;

Presented below is a review of how the objectives, as outlined in the statement of the problem, were achieved. 1. Methods of evaluating the performance of grounding systems must be described. These methods are the subject of Chapter III. 2. Field trips to operating mines should be undertaken, and a cri¬tique of their grounding systems made upon the basis of obser¬vation and the application of the above techniques. An analysis of field trip data, along with practical recommendations, is in¬cluded in Chapter IV, while a complete review of all field trips is given in Appendix I. 3. Because of their thoroughness, present coal mine regulations should be evaluated, and their applicability to open-pit environ¬ments appraised. This has been done in consultation with governmental agency, manufacturing, operating mine, and consult¬ing engineers. As stated in Chapter IV, insight gained through field observations has served to amplify and extend the base of knowledge from which the recommendations were made. 4. The results of these investigations should lead to suggested Federal standards. Such recommendations comprise Appendix II. In addition, several important factors, which are discussed in Chapter IV, were brought to light as a direct result of the field research. 5. The problems associated with underground mining continue to grow in size and complexity. As a result mine management is becoming aware of the benefits that can be achieved through the use of computer-oriented tools for system analysis. When such tools are employed in conjunction with benchmarking practices, the drivers of the system that lead to superior performance can more easily be determined. This paper discusses the use of the Simulation Language for Alternative Modelling (SLAM II) in the determination of the drivers of an underground room-and-pillar mining system. The mining operations included in the model consist of extracting, loading and hauling of the coal using continuous mining equipment in a room and pillar system. Equipment specifications and mining techniques used in the model are based upon current methods employed at the existing underground coal mines worldwide. The model developed is capable of adequately predicting the operational performance of the real world system from a statistical point of view. The results from the study show that computer simulation is an excellent tool for evaluating various mine configurations and for gaining a better understanding of the mining systems.

It enables one to look, up any subject in the first thirty-five volumes and is useful to those who have the Transactions, as well as to those who have not, because it tells what subjects have been treated and enables one to look these matters up in his own library and then afterward either to procure the individual papers from the Institute at the price of $1 each, or to procure Volumes, or to consult the Trans-actions at a nearby library, if such a one is available. It now seems desirable to publish another collective index, and the Editorial Department, upon the authority of the Board of Directors, has prepared an index of Volumes XXXVI to LV inclusive. This will be sold in the Institute's standard half morocco binding at a price of $5 and in paper covers at a price of $4. It wilt be ready in a few weeks. Those who already have the first index and purchase the second one, and those who purchase both, will have a complete index of the Transactions from Volumes I to LV inclusive. The traditional concept of scaled-distance modelling for predicting blast induced ground vibration holds many drawbacks, not least of which is the major effect data scatter imparts on confidence determination. An investigation by the Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering, The University of Leeds, England has resulted in the development of simple but effective method of improving prediction capacity through the reduction of effective error by incorporating individual location response into a scaled-distance model. The work is the product of an l&month blast-monitoring campaign at a limestone quarry situated in North Yorkshire, England. The data, when presented in the form of a scaled-distance model, indicates a typical scenario where a good overall correlation becomes marred by the extent of data scatter. Examination of the individual monitoring locations however indicates that the response of the individual location is an important factor in the explanation of the large residuals. The novel approach thathas been developed incorporates a series of locational site factors which when incorporated into a scaled distance model reduces the effective error and therefore improves prediction capacity. The approach is based on using a standard computer package “spread sheet” on the understanding that these are commonly available on all quarry or home computers. This approach has been validated by comparison with a more rigorous statistics method.

General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.

On April 2 and 3, 1970, more than 100 geologists attended the Sixth Annual Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals at Ann Arbor, Mich. After this brief appearance, the Forum apparently ceased to exist- but it didn't really, and another spring will see it again in action, in another corner of the country. The organization might be characterized as the country's largest permanent floating conference on the geology of industrial minerals. What is the Forum, where did it come from, and what is it up to? The idea originated in 1964 with a small group in the Department of Geology at Ohio State University, Columbus. This group felt that a forum was needed for the exchange of geologic information on industrial rocks and minerals. They envisioned an approach-which has subsequently been adhered to--that would be dominated neither by geological academics interested in theoretical problems nor by practical engineers concerned with processing large tonnages of rock. It was proposed to focus attention on the middle part of the spectrum, especially on practical problems of geological occurrence and how these problems affect extraction and use. In terms of the standard rock-products flow sheet, which starts with a truck unloading into the primary crusher beneath the words 'from quarry,' it was proposed to focus geological attention on what is beyond the primary crusher, out in the quarry.

Existing models proposed for the bacterial leaching of metal sulfides generally fail to predict solubilization rates at times greater than a few tens of hours. The reasons for this may be that these models are empirically based and use first order bacterial and chemical oxidation rates. This type of model is satisfactory for short time predictions (on the order of 20 hours) when the bacterially catalyzed dissolution is relatively minor. However, when bacterial action becomes more pronounced, these models consistently predict higher dissolution rates than those commonly observed in laboratory experiments. The present model uses several fundamental chemically and biologically based assumptions to predict the dissolution rate of a chalcopyrite concentrate for extended leach times up to the precipitation of jarosite. The main assumptions made are that Monod growth kinetics prevail, T. ferrooxidans adsorb onto the surface of the mineral (not necessarily mineral specific), and that during periods of high growth oxygen transport may become rate limiting. The model also relies on the energy efficiency of the bacteria in fixing carbon (growth yield) and correlates this value with available surface area of the mineral particles and the bacterial growth rate.

The design of slurry launders has usually been based on strictly empirical concepts. An examination of the most common procedures reveals that they do not account for many of the variables that are recognized as significant for slurry transport. These may include flow rate, volume concentration of solids, solids specific gravity, solids size distribution, particle shape, launder geometry, and roughness of the wetted surface. It was decided to develop a design procedure, which would accomplish two things: First: Take into consideration most of the known significant variables and systematize the procedure to assure consistent results. Second: Provide a rational basis for examining and utilizing operating data to refine and improve the system. To accomplish this, it was necessary to develop a basic design concept. This concept has been developed through a complex development history, and yet still appears workable and technically sound. That concept may be outlined as follows: First: The solids transport velocity is the fundamental basis for slurry launder design. Second: The stream configuration, hence the launder size, is integrated with the solids transport velocity so that the actual stream velocity exceeds the solids transport velocity. Currency fluctuations affect the rand revenues of all exports of mineral commodities, as well as influencing their price on local markets. Of the more than 50 mineral commodities produced by South Africa, about 75 per cent derive 40 to 100 per cent of their revenues from exports. . Although supply and demand are largely beyond its control, management can maximize its revenues despite fluctuating overseas prices and exchange rates by using the right market at the right time. Management can operate in the futures markets, which involve a specific commitment to deliver a specific quantity of a standardized commodity at a set time in the future and at a price that is determined on a futures exchange in open auction; or management can use the options market, in which a producer can insure against the risk of a falling price by taking out a put-option, which gives the holder the right (but not the obligation) to sell the commodity at a stated price at an agreed time in the future. In the forward markets, management has three available tools; forward currency transactions, trading of currency options, and money market hedges. Revenues, currencies of exchange earnings, purchasing power of the rand, and world price trends are shown in over 40 diagrams and tables for the main mineral commodities produced in South Africa.

YVO4:EU, excited under 3650A radiation, shows a marked increase in total brightness with in~rease in temperature. At 25°C the response to 3650A radiation is about 48 pct of its maximum response which occurs at about 350°C, Fig. 1. In an attempt to explain the phenomenon, one of the present authors' (R.K.D.) investigated the diffuse reflectance spectra of the phosphor at different temperatures (up to -150°C) and was unable to observe any significant change to which the increased brightness could be reasonably ascribed. Since then diffuse reflectance spectra at elevated temperatures have been obtained in this laboratory using an improved device. A significant decrease in the diffuse reflectance of a phosphor in the ultraviolet region—especially in the longer wavelength region—at -300°C has been observed. The purpose of this note is to describe the device used for high-temperature reflectance measurements and to explain the increased brightness of YVO4:Eu phosphor at elevated temperatures under 3650A excitation. Experimental. YVO4 and YVO4:Eu samples were prepared as previously described.' Inmet Mining is committed to implementing the highest corporate responsibility standards in its mining operations worldwide. Inmet is 100% owner of Minera Panama, a world-class copper project that is currently in the feasibility phase in north-central Panama. Panama has limited experience with modern mining, limited mining capacity, and the project context involves significant social, environmental and political complexity. The Project area is remote with recent in-migration of latino and indigenous people, informal and small-scale mining, local subsistence populations and considerable biodiversity value, coupled with a complex jurisdictional setting. In short, it is increasingly the kind of project mining companies are taking on because the easy projects have already been developed. With such challenging conditions, anticipating and managing social risks is critical to effective project management. To this end, between August 2007 and the third quarter of 2009 Inmet seconded Monkey Forest Consulting Ltd to the project to assist Minera Panama in building and implementing an effective, early phase external relations strategy. The team was also tasked to find and develop a locally based team that could sustain success through project development and into operations. Today?s presentation was created by Inmet and Monkey Forest and describes some of the lessons learned in implementing an effective early phase process for managing social issues.

Bjorn Bolviken (Geochemist, Geological Survey of Norway, Trondheim, Norway)-Under the heading "Recognition of Anomalies," the author states, "If the frequency distribution is actually log-normal, the probability of these high values being part of the background population is small (less than 0.023 and 0.0013 for 2 and 3 standard deviation, respectively)." The figures quoted seem to be the probabilities of these high values being the mean rather than part of the background population unless "background" is defined as one single concentration. If the background is considered to be a statistical distribution of concentrations,50 (which is probably the case here since the author uses the term "background population"), the probability of any observed value being part of the background may be estimated through a calculation of the number of observed values that are in excess of (or below) the number expected to belong to the background. Apparently, some confusion exists in the literature regarding this point. Many authors accept the concept of background as being a statistical distribution, but do not seem to recognize the consequences of this concept. One of these consequences would be that the background of a chemical element should comprise any concentration between zero and a theoretical maximum, which is governed by the chemistry and mineralogy of the material

The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) is an upgrade to one of MelbourneÆs ageing, under-capacity trunk sewers. It will reduce the volume and frequency of wet-weather overflows to the Merri and Moonee Ponds Creeks and facilitate new housing developments in the northern suburbs of the city. A total of 12.4 km of tunnel and eight vertical access shafts will be excavated as part of the two project stages: Stage 1 (NSP1) will be owned and operated by Melbourne Water (MW) and Stage 2 (NSP2) will be owned and operated by Yarra Valley Water (YVW). The owners require the project to have a service life of 100 years, a requirement significantly beyond many of the current Australian Standards, which aim to achieve service lives greater than 60 years but are typically assumed to achieve 40 to 60 years. Because of the potentially corrosive natures of the external environment along the tunnels and the internal sewer environment, durability was a key concern for NSP1 and NSP2. Stringent specifications were applicable to the tunnel lining systems. This paper describes the corrosive environments impacting NSP1 and NSP2, explains the key design differences between the two stages and details the lining systems considered and selected to achieve the clientsÆ desired 100-year service life. The project design is complete and construction began in 2007.

The Mount Gunnison No. 1 Mine of the West Elk Coal Company (wholly owned subsidiary of ARCO Coal) had secured contracts to provide low sulfur, high Btu steam coal to various utility companies. This called for the development of the B-Seam at the Mount Gunnison Mine located some 400 feet below the operating F-Seam workings being mined with conventional room and pillar techniques. The B-Seam, to meet production goals, will be mined by a new 600-foot longwall machine making a 13-foot high cut. American Mine Services was awarded a competitively bid contract to drive two 2000-foot, 13-foot by 16-foot slopes at -15 percent, sink a 16-foot diameter ventilation shaft 400 feet between the F- and B-Seams, install a 60-inch conveyor in one of the slopes, remove 7000 feet of existing conveyor and rehabilitate 7000 feet in two entries to accommodate the placement of the longwall machinery. The slope portals were located 7000 feet in by the surface portal. Unique to the project was the placement of work shops and other infrastructure 7000 feet underground with an entry height of 6 feet. The $7 million contract was completed in less than one year using a mix of permissible (Schedule 31) and standard (Schedule 24) LHD equipment, all pneumatic jumbos and shaft sinking gear.

Pittsburgh No. 8 coal, cleaned by conventional froth flotation, was oxidized in a 2-L Parr stirred bench-top autoclave. Autoclave tests were carried out for up to 5 hrs under the following conditions: 150 to 225ºC, 60 to 500 psi 02 and 15 to 60 g of coal per 600 mL of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring the total acidic group formed on the surface of the coal and by measuring the adsorption (under standard conditions) of calcium ion from a solution. The degree of oxidation of the coal increased continuously, without much leveling off, with increasing oxygen pressure. With increasing temperature, the oxidation of the coal increased sharply between 150 to 175ºC and then leveled off above 175 °C. The adsorption of calcium was >3% on coal oxidized under the most favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The loss in Btu was found to be sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concluded that the optimum oxidation of coal is achieved over 3 hrs at high oxygen pressures (e.g., 500 psi) at ~170ºC. This study also concluded that, when measured in terms of calcium adsorption, Btu loss and reaction time, the oxidation achieved in an autoclave is far superior to that achieved in a fluidized bed.

Historically, major natural gas transmission companies have been faced with the problem of meeting peak demands when the source of natural gas is located hundreds of miles away from the marketing area. Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corp.'s position was further complicated when offshore gas supply wells were shut-in during hurricane alerts. Transco's solution to this problem was the construction of salt storage wells adjacent to their pipeline near Eminence, Miss. Storage caverns were constructed using conventional solution mining methods. Two 13 3/8-in.-diam cased wells were completed and a 1,000,000-bbl cavern was leached at an interval of 5700 to 6700 ft at the base of each well. The two caverns have a usable storage volume of 2.0 billion cu f t and each well has a deliverability rate of 375 million standard cfd. The caverns are unique in that brine is not used for product displacement-all brine has been removed from the caverns. Natural gas is stored at a maximum pressure of 4000 psia. During withdrawal the cavern pressure drops to a minimum of 1225 Asia-the volume of gas between these two pressures becomes "usuable or top gas." The Eminence storage terminal is located on the Eminence salt dome about 30 miles north of Hattiesburg, Miss. Construction began in July 1968 and was completed in October 1970.

Characterising the weight percentage of each mineral in base metal ores is an integral part of assessing the quality of an ore in terms of its processing properties. The Rietveld method, which uses X-ray diffraction data, has been applied to routinely quantify the minerals in lead/zinc and copper ores from Mount Isa Mines Limited and supergene copper ores from Ernest Henry Mining as well as their related products from the concentrators. The Rietveld method has been tested by comparing Rietveld mineral data with a standard sample with known mineral weight percentages and comparing Rietveld mineral data with mineral data calculated from elemental assays where the element only exists in one mineral such as lead in galena. Where this latter situation does not occur, the Rietveld method has been checked with both elemental and optical microscope data. In all cases, there is a good correspondence between the Rietveld data and the data it was checked against with absolute differences generally in the range of 0.5 to 3 wt per cent. The Rietveld method generally quantifies all minerals occurring over 1 wt per cent in one analysis and is less expensive and more routine compared to traditional methods such as optical microscope point counting. The Rietveld method can be applied to many stages of the mining cycle such as exploration, feasibility studies, mining, minerals processing and for environmental studies.

Manganese dioxide reacts with sulfur dioxide solution in the absence of oxygen to form manganous ion and dithionate ion, together with a small amount of sulfate ion. The effects of SO, concentration, hydrogen ion concentration, stirring speed, and temperature on the rate of the reaction were studied. If it is assumed that undissociated SO2 molecules react rapidly with MnO, at active surface sites and that bisulfite ions react slowly, an equation can be derived that satisfactorily represents the observed reaction rates. For solutions in which the reaction with undissociated SO2 predominates, reaction rates and activation energies estimated from diffusion theory agree well with those found experimentally. Manganese dioxide dissolves readily in aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide. The nature of the dissolution reaction was first investigated by Gay-Lussac and welter1 in 1819; they identified a new oxysulfur radical, the dithionate ion, S2O6, as one of the reaction products. Since then, the reaction has become a standard method of preparing dithionates in the laboratory and one of the more promising methods of leaching manganese from low-grade ores. In the "dithionate process" developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines2,3, manganese-dioxide ore is suspended in a solution of calcium dithionate and leached with gas containing sulfur dioxide. The hydrometallurgical application of thiourea in processing precious metal ores and concentrates has reached the development stage. This paper reviews recent technical literature covering the process development of thiourea leaching. In addition, recent fundamental contributions are discussed. Most of the interest in thiourea leaching has involved treating high grade concentrates that have sufficient value to just the use of thiourea as a reagent. An important development in thiourea technology is the addition of SO2 to the leaching solution. This procedure effectively reduces the decomposition of thiourea and eliminates the problems of passive surface layers that limit the leaching efficiency. Results for the thiourea leaching of a bulk sulfide concentrate and a residue from the autoclave leaching of a smelter flue dust are also reported. As determined by a standard bottle roll cyanidation test, the bulk concentrate was extremely resistive to cyanide leaching yielding only 16% gold and 2% silver extraction in 24 hours. Leaching with a relatively concentrated thiourea solution (1MCS (NH2)2) resulted in 83% gold and 75% silver extraction in four hours. With the treated flue dust residue, gold extraction was about 60%. Gold and silver extraction with cyanide was sensitive to both cyanide concentration and oxidizing conditions. Cyanidation resulted in 59% gold extraction and 77% silver extraction in 24 hours.
