The Eskay Creek Mine is a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia. The mine started operations in late1994. For the first three years, ore was crushed to -50 mm(-2 in.), blended to satisfy smelter terms and shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Preliminary evaluations indicated that a complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. So markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations began at a production rate of 300 t/d (330stpd).

"This paper presents results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that the rock mass strength can be determined following the GSI approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions:• construction dates from 1880s to 2006• spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m• depths from 17 to 124 m• excavation methods of drill & blast, roadheader and TBM.Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of failure. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zone. Failure and stable points are then compared to the rock mass strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown criterion and spalling criteria. The Hoek-Brown rock mass strength envelope differentiates between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones remarkably well.INTRODUCTIONStress induced failures of rock masses are fortunately rare in civil tunnelling. However, when they occur they provide an opportunity to calibrate an assumed rock mass strength criterion. This paper compares an estimate of rock mass strength for the Hawkesbury Sandstone with the following cases where stress induced failure occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone.• Cataract & Devines Tunnels of the Upper Canal (Upper Nepean Scheme)• Malabar Outfall Tunnel• Sydney liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) Storage Cavern• Northside Storage Tunnel• Cross City Tunnel• Lane Cove TunnelTwo-dimensional finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of the failures. Continuous processing plants handling liquids have achieved a high degree of centralized automatic control. Many chemical plants are operated from one room, with automatic control of the various process flow rates. These plants know from experience that automatic control can produce higher through-put, better uniformity of product, decreased operating costs and reduction of storage capacity, Plants which process materials in the form of bulk solids have not been able to use control to as great an extent, primarily due to the lack of measuring equipment capable of providing the same types of continuous automatic control available with liquid flow meters. This paper will describe a scale for measuring flows of bulk materials on conveyor belts which is particularly adaptable to remote centralized instrumentation and automatic control, and will also describe some typical control applications. Fig. 1 illustrates the basic method of measurement of this scale. A conveyor belt idler is supported on a rigid carriage which in turn is mounted in two anti- friction bearings on the conveyor stringers. The pivoted carriage is prevented from rotating about the pivot shaft by an electric strain gauge load cell connected between the carriage and a cross support. Increasing load on the conveyor belt increases the moment of the carriage frame about the pivot shaft, and proportionally increases the tension in the load cell. The belt speed is measured by a conventional d. c. tachometer generator driven from a pulley, usually on the return belt. The speed signal from the tachometer generator and the load signal from the load cell are combined to produce a signal proportional to the flow rate of material in tons per hour, or lbs. per foot, or equivalent units, It will be important to remember, in considering various control applications, that the flow rate of material on the belt is composed of these two component signals, namely the weight of material and the speed at which it is moving. The feed rate is then indicated and recorded by a self-balancing potentiometer of the type used for measuring temperature by means of thermocouples. These instruments may also be equipped with integrating mechanisms reading the totalized tonnage over a period of time.

The successful integration of overburden casting techniques into the mine production cycle can be an extremely cost effective use of explosives. The entire mining cycle revolves around the cast blasting and to be successful requires a great deal of planning and cooperation. Several operations of Cyprus Coal Company in the Appalachian coal fields have successfully integrated blast casting into their mine plan. This paper will detail the parameters and necessary controls to integrate an overburden casting program into a surface coal operation.

Historically, the surface subsidence over underground coal mines has been predicted using empirical profile or influence functions which have little or no connection to the actual mechanics of the subsidence- Without a mechanistic basis, establishing the exact site-specific parameters to use in these empirical methods has been problematic. A practical subsidence predictive method based on mechanics has the appealing capability of allowing the determination of site-specific parameters from fundamental properties of the overburden with minimal field calibration work. This paper presents a case study where a mechanics-based, boundary-element program is used to calculate the surface subsidence associated with several panels of a Northern Appalachian longwall coal mine. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, and it incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin seam or vein type deposits. In this paper. the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at three longwalls. The subsidence results from the model are compared with field measurements and analyzed The results from the case study in this paper demonstrate that the laminated model with calibrated properties can easily provide fairly accurate subsidence predictions and is fairly flexible for fitting measured subsidence. However, additional subsidence predictive case studies are recommended in order to ultimately evaluate the potential of the laminated overburden model for practical subsidence prediction

The proper transfer of roof loads from props and bolts to ribs and pillars can result in appreciable savings. The author shows how to plan such load reduction in underground mines. For openings in bedded rocks, analyzed by simple beam theory, it has been shown that roof loads can be shifted from one support to another.&apos; This transfer is effected by controlling the relative deflection of adjacent supports. If this action is used to reduce loads in the props or bolts and increase them in the ribs or pillars, it could be productive of economies averaging 30 pct. Such savings can be realized by: 1) using smaller artifical supports such as props and bolts, and 2) increasing loads in the rib to induce eventual failure for longwall caving. Since the rib is relatively load-insensitive, it provides a natural load sink. However, caution must be used in applying such permissive deflections, for while the supports are being handled properly, the stresses in the roof itself are very sensitive to such manipulations.1 An underground opening overlain by a relatively thin immediate roof, and a thick main roof, is usually laid out as shown in Fig. 1. The total open span (T) between pillars or ribs is calculated on the basis of the main roof, and the secondary spans (L) on the basis of the immediate roof, so that a complete accounting of the existing loads is made. For this purpose the immediate roof is treated as a uniformly loaded continous beam, which is an indeterminate structure as shown in Fig. 2(A). The term systematic supports places the following two restrictions on the continuous beam: 1) Spans between all supports are equal: uniformity of spans. 2) Loads on all supports (excepting ribs) are equal: uniformity of supports. The usual mode of analysis of such a structure by beam theory is to divide it up into a series of simply supported beams with end moments as shown in Fig. 2(B)2 The problem now is to transfer a maximum roof load to the rib from the span immediately adjacent to it by permitting its support to deflect, and yet not fail the roof. Once this has been done, the load can be equalized on all other supports by permitting further degrees of relative deflection. It is necessary, therefore, to determine an expression for the constant load on each support, and the required deflections, in terms of properties of the roof. AFTER shock loading, mechanical twinning has been observed by several authors1-4 for a variety of fcc metals and alloys. It has been shown2,3 that low stacking fault energy materials deform primarily by the formation of mechanical twins and stacking faults during dynamic loading. Further, Inman, Murr, and Rose2 have shown that a correlation exists between the average hardness and the volume percent of mechanically twinned material in stainless steel. It has been observed in nickel&apos; that mechanical twins are produced during shock deformation if the peak pressure associated with the shock wave is greater than 350kbar. It is the purpose of this work to discuss shock-hardening mechanisms in nickel and to determine to what extent the initial condition influences the final response. The "flying plate technique" was used to generate planar shock waves with peak pressures as high as 710 kbar. The details of the technique5" have been discussed elsewhere and will not be repeated here. The material used in this study was polycrystalline nickel of 99.98 pct purity and had an initial grain size of 0.18 mm. Prior to any deformation, all samples were given a stress-relief anneal of 6 hr at 600°C in a vacuum furnace. After annealing, the initial condition of the samples was changed by cold rolling individual samples from 0 pct to a maximum of 80 pct reduction in thickness. This provided samples with controlled initial histories for shock deformation. Immediately after shock loading, the specimens were slowed and quenched by suitable arrangement of buffer material and water bath. This technique minimized specimen damage and the effects of shock heating on the samples. Since deformation twins in high stacking fault energy fcc metals are only produced at high stress levels, the initial defect configuration prior to mechanical twinning should greatly influence the number of twins formed. In fact, Zukas and Fowler7 have found that prestraining in iron and steel greatly suppresses the formation of mechanical twins during the shock deformation process. Following the methods of Warren and warekois8 and Cohen and Wagner,9 X-ray diffraction profile analysis was performed to determine the incidence of stacking faults and mechanical twins in the deformed nickel. Analysis was made on samples in the annealed, cold-rolled, shock-loaded, and cold-rolled—shock-loaded states. The estimated accuracy of the peak position measurements is *0.01 deg in 2?. Therefore the accuracy in the measurement of the relative peak shifts between the (400) and (222) diffraction line profiles is on the order of *0.04 deg in 2?. None of our measurements indicated peak shifts greater than 0.04 in 28. This would correspond to a fault density of -1 pct and sets the limit on the sensitivity of our instrument. Similarly, analysis of the shift in the center of gravity of the diffraction line profiles yields the minimum measurable value of the twin fault probabilitya to be -0.002. Fig. 1 shows mechanical twinning in nickel shock-loaded to 400 kbar. In this photograph, fault intersections are clearly visible. A contained nuclear explosion is proposed to produce a chimney of broken ore well below the water table. After the chimney is filled with water and reaches hydrostatic equilibrium, oxygen, under pressure, is introduced near the bottom of the mass of broken rock. The increase in solubility of oxygen at high hydrostatic pressure is sufficient to initiate the oxidation of the primary sulfides, chalcopyrite and pyrite. The oxidation and dissolution of these sulfides produces enough heat to increase the temperature of the ore and water in the chimney as much as 100° to 150°C. The rate of dissolution of chalcopyrite exposed to oxygen-saturated solutions becomes so rapid under these conditions that the rate of copper extraction becomes limited by the accessibility of chalcopyrite to the solutions. Means of solution control and distribution of oxygen in the chimney have been examined in some detail. A calculational model utilizing experimentally determined solubility rates is utilized to estimate the temperature rise in the chimney and the rate of copper recovery as a function of initial temperature, sulfide content of ore, and size of ore particles. It is concluded that the high pressure and high temperature obtainable in a large ore mass broken by nuclear explosives promise the rapid and economic recovery of minerals not considered soluble by conventional in-situ leaching methods. The method should be broadly applicable to the kinds of deep deposits that must be depended on for future production and with minimum disruption of the environment.

On August 22, 1966, just 20 months after writing sales agreements with Japanese steel mills, Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd made its first contractual shipment of 52,000 tons to Yawata Iron and Steel Co Ltd. As world news, the event was not spectacular. But to mining men it represented an astonishing achievement. Twenty months of feverish effort and the expenditure of more than $100 million had created a large open-pit iron ore mine, a crushing plant, storage and load-out facilities for sized ore, and a supporting township at Mt Tom Price; a 182-mile standard gauge railway; and port and loading facilities for a nominal loading capacity of 6000 tph as well as a port town, Dampier, on King Bay. The project was executed in the sparsely inhabited, arid, dissected-plateau country of the Hamersley Range in the northwest sector of Western Australia. Hamersley, 60% owned by Conzinc RioTinto of Australia Pty Ltd and 40% by Kaiser Steel Corp, holds sale contracts for ore and pellets valued at $770 million. The main contracts are with the Japanese, who are to be supplied with 65.5 million tons of ore during the 16 years from August 1966 to August 1982 and 18 million tons of pellets over a 10-yr period beginning in early 1968. Of lesser importance at this time, but presaging trends, are contracts for a total of nearly 1.5 million tons to be shipped to England and Western Europe during the years 1966-68. A pellet plant with a capacity of 2 million tpy is now under construction at Dampier and is to be on stream early next year. Another interesting project for which the plans are set, is a desalination plant for sea water to supply industrial requirements and potable water for the town of Dampier.

One of the seminal pioneering papers in reserve evaluation was published by Danie Krige in 1951. In that paper he introduced the concept of regression techniques in providing better estimates for stope grades and correcting for what later became known as the ‘conditional bias’. In South Africa, the development of this approach led to the phenomenon being dubbed the ‘regression effect’, and regression techniques ultimately formed the basis of simple kriging in Krige’s later papers. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Georges Matheron (1965) formulated the general theory of ‘regionalized variables’ and included copious discussion on what he termed the ‘volume-variance’ effect. Matheron defined mathematically the reason for, and quantification of, the difference in variability between estimated values and the actual unknown values. In 1983, this author published a paper that combined these two philosophies so that the ‘regression effect’ could be quantified before actual mining block values were available. In 1996 and in some earlier presentations, Krige revisited the regression effect in terms of the conditional bias and suggested two measures that might enable a practitioner of geostatistics to assess the ‘efficiency’ of the kriging estimator in any particular case. In this article, we revisit the trail from ‘regression effect’ to ‘kriging efficiency’ in conceptual terms and endeavour to explain exactly what is measured by these parameters and how to use (or abuse) them in practical cases.

This paper addresses the problem of designing a destress blasting procedure to reduce the incidence of rockbursting in hard rock mines. A review is made of the developed theory and practice of destress blasting in rockburst-prone ground. Specific reference is made to a recent survey of past and current practice with particular reference to Ontario mining operations. The need is identified for a more scientific basis for destress blast design and monitoring. Reference to developments in blasting technology as well as rock mechanics are then made to support a proposed, integrated design procedure and research strategy.

Removal of As(III) and As(V) in Aqueous Solution There are toxic arsenical species such as As(III) and As(V), and arsenious species have specially strong toxicity. The strong toxicity causes contamination of groundwater and water pollution for the semiconductor production process. This study is concerned with the removal of As(III) and As(V) with various kinds of Mg/Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) containing CO32-, SO42-, Cl- and NO3- as interlayer anionic species. The anion exchange property is different from the kind of layered double hydroxides and the Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is superior in the anion exchange property of As(III) and As(V) due to the nature of nitrate ion existing in the interlayer. The pH condition suitable for As(V) removal is 7.1 or more. If the initial conditions such as 10mg/dm3 of As(V) concentration, 7.1 of pH, 1 m3 of amount of solution and 99 per cent of removal are fixed, the required amount of Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is 0.27kg for two step-batch operations. The As(III) is suitable to oxidize to As(V) before the removal processing.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Tech (Mining Engineering) degree The purpose of this study is to establish whether to mine the Bottom of Pit (BOP)/TOB 4 reserve before the commencement of the Block Cave or whether this should be disregarded and the reserve be extracted at the end of the life of the Cave. The primary goal of this report is to investigate and propose a practical mining method to safely extract the reserve given the set constraints. This report quantifies the additional revenue the TOB 4 will contribute to Finsch?s overall NPV thus enhancing Finsch?s business case and strategically enhancing the SBP. Several underground mining options have been investigated. The proposed mining method includes the installation of a series of extraction tunnels below the TOB 4 reserve from 53 level, with a slot access tunnel system. Ground will be loaded by LHDs from the draw points and tipped into 50-ton dump trucks at a transfer point, from there the ground will be transported to 53 level No. 1groundpass where it will join the existing ground-handling system. Primary development is scheduled to begin October 2002 and last for a period of approximately 7 months until early April 2003.The production is broken into 4 phases. Phase 1 is scheduled to begin mid-April 2003. The final production phase will be completed by November 2005. The production scheduling has been designed in order to remain ahead of the Block 4 undercut in order to ensure stability and safety. Due cognisance was taken of the health and safety of all employees concerned during the design of the mining and ground-handling processes for the Bottom of Pit. As far as is reasonably practicable, the BOP was designed and will be constructed and equipped to provide conditions for the safe operation of machinery and a healthy working environment for people underground. Relevant requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act regulations pertaining to mining operations have been identified and adhered to during all phases of the design process.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to develop and evaluate a training workshop for mine safety training personnel. The workshop was based on the Instructional Development Institute (IDI) which has been used for nearly ten years to train educators and administrators in the application of a nine-step model for defining, developing, and evaluating instruction. The Mining Instructional Development Institute (MIDI) was developed by investigators at the University of Southern California as a two-phase project. Phase I involved the modification of the six-day IDI program (including audiovisual presentations, workbooks, games, and exercises) for use by mine safety trainers as a workshop lasting three and one-half days. Phase II involved the evaluation and validation of the prototype MIDI workshop by means of a two-stage jury of experts and a prototype field trial. On the basis of data collected in the validation process it was determined that the institute provided an effective and useful method of instruction in mine safety training and that the institute would be especially valuable for mine safety training administrators and supervisors.

The Wyoming Mineral-Conoco Crownpoint Project represents the first time that big hole drilling has been exclusively used to develop totally a privately financed mine below a depth of 1000 feet. Three shafts, one ten feet in diameter and two six feet in diameter, were successfully drilled to depths of 2243&apos;, 2188&apos; and 2188&apos; respectively and cased with hydrostatic designed steel casing. The largest shaft is to be used to handle muck and water from station excavation and enlargement of the other two shafts. A reverse circulation system with potassium chloride base mud was used for drilling. The mud was cleaned by settling in steel lined tanks with assistance by cyclone type separators. Deviation was monitored by gyroscopic surveying at 30 foot intervals and did not exceed 16 inches off plumb. Casing was designed to withstand hydrostatic pressures with a 1.5 safety factor to the large shaft and 1.25 safety factor for the smaller shafts. All casing welds were x-ray tested prior to lowering the casing in the hole. Cementing the annular space completed the operation. The total time to mobilize, drill and move off the three shafts was 363 days. The drilling operation was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

Este trabalho apresenta uma análise de falha dos garfos de uma empilhadeira que romperam durante uma operação rotineira de levantamento de carga. Amostras dos garfos fraturados foram submetidas à análise química, análise macrográfica, micrografia óptica, análises de dureza e microdureza e ensaios de tração e impacto. Além disso, foram analisadas as tensões as quais os garfos estavam submetidos, considerando a carga levantada, a especificação do equipamento e análises de fadiga e de tenacidade à fratura. Dessa maneira foi possível identificar o material dos garfos, suas características e também de que maneira ocorreu a fratura, resultando em recomendações que possam prever e/ou evitar ocorrências desse tipo futuramente.
