Backfilling in Canadian mines has been practised for close to 100 years and evidence anticipates the application of mine fill technology at an increasing rate during the foreseeable future. The evolution of backfill technology is closely related to the advancement of modern mining methods and the development of new backfill technology continues to evolve. The authors, after conducting extensive surveys of backfill practices in underground mines across Canada, have concluded that, because backfill operations employ large quantities of cement and experience large costs associated both with backfilling practice and cement use, opportunities exist for reducing backfill energy costs and enhancing the application of alternative cementing agents in backfill. Consequently, the authors have developed an alternate, equally effective and lower cost binder agent replacement for cement, and incorporated waste glass into the development of a lower cost backfill (glassfill). This paper presents the results of two design stages associated with the development of glassfill: strength development and flow performance. The advancement of this technology has reached a stage that should promote industrial implementation within the Canadian mining industry. A number of Canadian mining operations exhibit potential for plant optimization through possible binder source replacement, and might thus realize associated reductions in backfill and energy costs.

After the successful breakthrough at the end of 2006 of both TBMs into the multifunctional site Faido (MFS), in the middle of 2007 the two tunnel boring machines resumed the 12 km long section between Faido and Sedrun. In the roughly a 10 month interval both approximately 465 m long tunnel boring machines were partly dismantled, pushed through the 2.5 km long MFS, rebuilt for the new larger diameter of 9.5 m and reassembled to be ready for operation. In the rebuilding phase, improvements were made to the equipment, especially as a result of experience gained from the previous 14 km long drive in the section Bodio and taking into account the latest information regarding the upcoming 14 km section Faido. Both TBM drives are currently in the rock formations of the Lucomagno gneiss, which stretch over a section of 3.5 km from the MFS Faido to the predicted Piora Syncline. This section is divided into two fold axes of the Chièra Synform, where the Lucomagno gneiss pass from a sub-horizontal into vertical bedding. The drives, with current rock overburdens exceeding 1,500 m and, as known from the excavation phase of the MFS, in part highly disturbed rock formations, are characterized by the locally intense rock squeezing conditions with large convergences in the vicinity of the driving TBM as well as backwards due to the interaction of the two drives. High expenditure for the support measures, reduced driving performances together with extensive extra work associated with deadlines and increased costs are the result. In the paper the previous experience with the TBM drives in the section Faido and the challenges still awaiting us are presented and discussed.

The problem of estimating the precision of systematic samples from a mineral deposit is attacked by interpolating the quality, or other attribute measured, by using Fourier approximation. Such approximation using trigonometric functions yields a particularly simple expression for the variance of the mean value of the attribute sampled. The increasing volume of publication in which the science of statistics has been applied to the problem of predicting the quality of an ore deposit from sets of samples taken from it might lead one to believe that engineering judgment can be replaced by statistics. There is, in fact, an implicit application of the principle of indifference or of "no advance knowledge" which has been discredited in modern statistical theory and practice. These pages will show that it is not always advantageous, efficient, or safe to apply this principle. This problem will be dealt with by using series of orthonormal functions to describe the distribution of the quality of ore in space as contrasted with the more commonly used distribution of quality as a frequency function. Mining engineers are rarely well acquainted with the use of such series or of the functions comprising them. These uses are commonplace in the fields of communication and information theory and it is not surprising that applications taken from these fields should be found appropriate for the analysis of the information contained in a set of samples from an ore deposit. It is hoped that presentation of the following basic, but incomplete, results will generate wider interest in this method and a fuller development of it as well as of the necessary computational techniques. FUNDAMENTAL PREMISES Random variables in the strictest sense are not very common in mine sampling. The sets of samples are almost always taken systematically and are, hence, not subject to all the laws governing random events. Therefore, unless there is indeed random experimental error in the determinations of quality, the treatment of systematic samples of n members as though they were random samples of n members often leads to calculation of confidence limits for the mean quality which are larger than they should be with the result that unnecessary additional sampling is done. The reason for this will emerge in the following discussion leading to Eq. 24 and its generalization. In order to inquire into such questions on a rigorous basis and at the same time avoid arithmetic complications that would obscure the concepts involved, a one dimensional distribution of quality will be assumed. Slags have been produced as by-products from pyrometallurgical processes for thousands of years, and have generally been regarded as waste. Many of these slags are no longer seen as residues merely to be discarded, but as potential economic sources of metals, or as useful by-products in their own right. Slag cleaning can enhance the recovery of valuable metals in existing pyrometallurgical processes, or can produce economic value from recycling old slag dumps. For example, a process has been developed and implemented industrially for recovering cobalt from copper smelting slag in a DC arc furnace. The relatively non-leachable behaviour of glassy slags allows them to be used as a very safe means of disposal of metallurgical waste streams, including many that are classified as hazardous. The high temperatures, reducing conditions, and good mixing that can be achieved in a DC arc furnace enable the effective functioning of this environmentally beneficial means of disposal. Lead blast furnace slag can be rendered safe for disposal by treating it using the Enviroplas process, which strips most of the hazardous lead from the slag (and traps the rest in an insoluble glassy slag) and recovers economic quantities of zinc by absorbing (in a lead splash condenser)the zinc vapour that is fumed off in the furnace. Another example can be seen in the recovery of a chromium- and nickel-containing alloy from stainless steel plant dust, while producing a disposable residual slag. The examples presented here illustrate that it is possible to develop processes that are both economic and environmentally beneficial. A.B. Rushton The work and resulting publications of the Committee on Underground Coal Mine Safety and The President's Commission on Coal were appropriate at the time of publication. The statistics cited in the publications appeared to be valid, and the actions proposed by the committee had merit. Although the actions proposed to achieve further improvements in safety may have been worthy of repeating, to associate statistics (Table 1) that are seven to eight years old with company names is bad. Statistics are readily available from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and are usually within three months of being up to date. A review of the most recent Coal Controlling Co. Report will reveal significant changes in the rankings. The more recent statistics should have been cited, or at least compared with those used in the article. Westmoreland Coal Co. is listed as having a 21.1 disabling injury rate for the period (1/78-12/80). The disabling injury rate for the Company for the year ending 1985 was 7.4 for the underground mines and 6.25 for the total facilities. Through March 1986, the disabling rate for the underground mines was 2.86. The management and employees of Westmoreland Coal Co. are committed to safety. The improvements achieved over the past five years attest to that commitment. We are justifiably proud of the achievement and dislike being misrepresented as in the April 1986 article. Reply by E.M. Spokes I regret that the lapse of time since the original work gives a picture of safety practice that is no longer true today. That Westmoreland has reduced its disabling injury rate by 65% to 7.4 in 1985 is most commendable, and I congratulate you for this accomplishment. It is typical of the progress sought by the National Academy of Science and National Research Council when they funded the original study and published "Toward Safer Underground Coal Mines" in 1982. If a significant number of companies do as well as Westmoreland, the report will have served its purpose. Since the paper was primarily a condensation of the original report, it would not have been appropriate to seek access to later statistics. The purpose in seeking its publication at the time of presentation was to reach those who might have missed the original report. The fact that publication was delayed has not voided that purpose and may have reminded some who were aware of the original that its recommendations still apply to improvement of underground coal mine safety.

A brief outline covering the shovels and draglines in use in the open-pit mines of Western Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon, is given, followed by the procedure for the selection of the correct wire rope for each application. Such fa ctors as wire rope constructions, lay directions and types of cores are mentioned. Once the correct wire rope has been selected, there are variousfactors that can affect the service fife ofthe rope and the reduction ofdown-time during rope change-overs. Factors such as hairpin winding, types of Becket loops, and shovel drum and bail adaptors are described.

The Imhoflot G-Cell, a new development in the pneumatic flotation technology (which incorporates centrifugal forces in the separating vessel) is a recent innovation in the mineral processing world. The G-Cell was invented by Dr Rainer Imhof and commercialised by Maelgwyn Mineral Services Ltd. In a short time span a number of plants and units have been successfully commissioned in the mineral processing industry. In addition, a number of industrial G-Cell flotation plants are in the process of construction for the purpose of coal preparation and environmental remediation. In this paper two industrial installations have been highlighted together with a pilot plant test programme investigating ultra fine flotation recovery for a base metal operation.

The Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 3291, to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral- material production or consumption.

IN recent years the demands of space limitations and increased loads, particularly in the aircraft industry, have accelerated the trend toward utilization of ultra-high strength steels. The increased application of such steels has focused attention on the phenomenon of delayed failure or static fatigue. Parts subjected to a static load, after successfully sustaining the load for an extended period of time, may fail in a brittle manner. Subsequent examination of such failed parts by conventional laboratory tests in many cases reveals no apparent signs of embrittle-ment. That is, the material exhibits good ductility and impact resistance. Furthermore, consideration of the service conditions (environment and temperature) under which this brittle failure occurred eliminates its classification as a stress-corrosion or creep type of failure. Recently this unique time dependent fracture process has been the subject of numerous investigations. The most significant result of these studies was the recognition of hydrogen as the source of embrittlement. While the effect of numerous variables on the occurrence of static fatigue failure has been defined, an adequate explanation of these behaviors is lacking. The occurrence of this phenomenon in steels generally has been limited to strength levels in excess of 180,000 lb per sq in. Although steels at high hardness levels have exhibited delayed failure in the absence of hydrogen introduction after heat treat-ment,'.' this behavior was most prevalent when the material in processing had been subjected to an environment conducive to the absorption of hydrogen. The beta solid solution phases of the systems copper-zinc, copper-aluminum, copper-tin and silver-zinc are structurally analogous.' R. F. Mehl and 0. T. Marzke2 have shown that the a phase upon segregating from the 6 phase in the system copper-zinc takes the form of needles lying parallel to a [Ill] direction or some similar direction, such as [556], of the parent solid solution, and that the a phase upon segregating from the ß phase in the system copper-aluminum also takes the form of needles. By analogy they assume that in this case also the segregate needles lie parallel to the [ill] or [556] direction in the ß lattice. The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether the structures resulting from segregation of the a phases from the respective ß phases of the systems copper-tin and silver-zinc are analogous to those obtained by Mehl and Marzke in the systems copper-zinc and copper-aluminum. This paper focuses on the underground tunnel work at the Hollywood Water Quality Improvement Project (HWQIP) in Los Angeles, CA. The HWQIP is being constructed to provide a water distribution system to bypass the existing Hollywood Reservoir System, which supplies drinking water for 500,000 people. The major project features include, a 2.9-meter diameter 1,829 meter long bypass tunnel, a 1.8-meterdiameter 366 meter long utility tunnel, 3 jack and bore tunnels, two 136 million liters underground circumferentially wrapped pre-stressed concrete water storage tanks, associated piping, and mechanical facilities. The physical project location coupled with strong community involvement and stringent environmental concerns was a considerable driving force for this project located in the Cahuenga Pass area of the Hollywood Hills north of Los Angeles, CA.

THE plastic deformation of slender single crystals of zinc has been described in some detail in the paper by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid,1 which has become a classic, and also by one of the present authors in a somewhat shorter account.' The study of single-crystal zinc is termed classical because zinc single crystals offer, perhaps, the best material yet available for the study of atomic behavior during deformation and the effect known as "strengthening" in metals. A considerable amount of additional work has also been done on single-crystal zinc, but as it is not closely related to the present paper it will not be considered. Throughout all the former work, the mechanism of plastic deformation first described by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid has been assumed to hold. This may be said to offer the strongest confirmation of its correctness. Even so, the picture of the process has never been as completely portrayed as is desirable. The first object of the present paper is to describe work that has been done in this field, and which is even yet being carried on, in the hope that a more complete picture may be obtained. Mathewson and Phillips' have recently described a new mechanism of the deformation of zinc based on their study of large rectangular crystals. One of their conclusions was that deformation produced twinning with a rotation of some of the basal planes into positions 94° removed from their original position; a position almost the same as that of the prismatic planes before twinning. A second conclusion was that fracture occurred along these basal planes in their new position, and, therefore that fractures previously regarded as prismatic were in reality basal. Such findings are of great significance and they raise a question as to the generality of such behavior. Professor Mathewson's opinion is that even the slender cylindrical single crystals behave in the same manner as his large rectangular crystals when strained by simple tension.

Where the equipment, technique and materials are available for the construction of large diameter rock socketted piles, this is frequently the most economical and environmentally acceptable method of supporting very large concentrated foundation loads in geoglogically appropriate areas. This paper outlines the current approaches in Australia to design and installation of large diameter rock socketted piles. The equipment and procedures described generally reflect those developed or used by Vibro-Pile (Aust.), a company which, while installing the usual range of driven and bored piles, specializes in the design and construction of large diameter rock socketted piles and possesses special expertise in drilling in high strength rock. A high capacity crane attached drill for large diameter drilling in rock is briefly described. Discussed in detail are the construction techniques employed and structural and geomechanical design methods adopted.

The berths for carriers of 10000 dwt in Yantian Port of Dapeng Bay are constructing now. In the five years, We built more than 20 deepwater berths of 5000 dwt to 40000 dwt. This paper will introduce how to solve the difficulties of the complex geological conditions and how to use the new fashion construction. We will reduce the period of engineering construction and get good quality and make a good beginning of rapid development of port construction in ShenZhen Special Economic Zone.

Your assessment of the minerals business. I would first like to express our profound sadness and sincere condolences to the families of the miners who lost their lives in recent mine mishaps particularly in West Virginia, and other locations. Any loss is unacceptable. It is time to review and, if required, re-establish a rigorous health and safety agenda in the mines. It must involve a review of health and safety regulations. And innovative training methods for sensing, awareness and mitigation of health and safety hazards must be developed. As far as the minerals business is concerned, I am excited about the outlook for mining. Over the last 20 years, global demand for minerals has closely mirrored the growth of the gross domestic product. Minerals re-main a major part of the world’s economic foundation. And that will continue to be the case. It is no surprise that the fortunes of the mining industry rise and fall with general economic trends. Globally, mining has been strong — thanks to the explosive economic growth in Asia. The U.S. mining industry has performed reasonably well, with notable strength in the metals, coal and construction and aggregate areas and with some softness in the industrial minerals sector.

Desenvolveu-se um dispositivo para soldagem por gravidade com eletrodos revestidos e investigou-se o comportamento do dispositivo em função de variações nas condições operacionais. Ciclos térmicos durante a deposição de cordões em tubos de aço API X65Q foram avaliados por meio de medidas experimentais, utilizando-se termopares inseridos na poça de fusão durante a soldagem por gravidade. Amostras do metal base e do cordão depositado em diferentes condições de aporte térmico passaram por análise química, microestrutural e metalográfica. Observou-se boa repetibilidade na velocidade de deposição do dispositivo e aspecto visual adequado de cordões de solda depositados. Os resultados dos ciclos térmicos mostram que as variações nos valores de ?t800/500, utilizando eletrodos AWS E7018 e correntes de soldagem de 70A e 150A, causaram redução de 21% na proporção de ferrita acicular e, consequente, redução de 22% nos valores de microdureza do metal de solda com maior aporte térmico.

Surface contamination of minerals during fine grinding may occur due to coating of one material on the other. This can alter the surface chemical properties and adversely affect the separation of minerals by physico-chemical processes. In dolomite-silica system, selectivity was completely lost (compared to a synthetic mixture) after wet grinding of the minerals in spite of using a dispersant. Adsorption and surface characterization studies were conducted on silica particles separated after grinding with dolomite. SEM-EDAX analysis indicated the presence of dolomite on silica particles, which could cause the loss of selectivity.

Falconbridge's Lac Shortt gold deposit is located in Gand Township, some 25 km north-east of Desmaraisville, The deposit was outlined in i980 by a drilling program me conducted by Falconbridge Ltd. in a joint venture with Corporation Falconbridge Copper after three years of systematic exploration by Falconbridge Ltd. in the Desmaraisville area. The gold bearing structure had previously been drilled by three other exploration companies. As based on an underground development programme conducted by Corporation Falconbridge Copper, the "in-si tu" mineral inventory to a depth of 500 metres at a cut-off grade of 3.0 g/t is estimated at 1 937 605 tonnes at a grade of 6.4 g/t (uncut) and 6.0 g/t (cut). Regionally, the stratigraphy consists of thick sequences of volcanic and volcanosedimentary rocks intruded by numerous and voluminous mafic (gabbro), felsic (granodiorite, syenite) and anorthositic intrusions. Structurally, at least two fold sets and one major fault system (E-NE) are present. Minor fault systems oriented E-NE and N-NW also occur. Mine stratigraphy can be divided into 1) - the hangingwall; 2) - ore zone; 3) - footwall. Hanging wall rocks include: a) green lapilli and blocky tuff b) transition zone c) green mica crystal tuff and d) red dolomitic tuff. Ore zone rocks include: a) bleached mafic tuff b) barren carbonates, c) pyritic dolomitic tuff (?) and d) brick-red syenite. Footwall rocks include: a) magnetic lava (so-called diorite), b) mafic lapilli and blocky tuff and c) alkali basalt, Native gold is the only gold mineral so far identified and it occurs both as free grains in gangue and as micro-inclusions in pyrite. Two geochemical groups were identified in the main rock units: 1) Alkali-rich rocks cons is ting of the ore zone and foot wall rocks and 2) Subalkaline group consisting of the hanging wall rocks. Ore analysis also shows Ba, Sr, W, Zr, REE and F enrichment in the ore zone. Footwall rocks are enriched in Na20. Present geological and geochemical data do not permit a clear interpretation of the formation for the Lac Shortt gold deposit but suggest it is a volcanic-hosted stratabound type. The bulk of the mineralization is associated with an exhalative phase following alkalic, carbonic, hydrothermal activity and part of the mineralization is associated with a late intrusive phase.
