The ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix, widely used as the construction material world-wide. Billions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of CO2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic CO2 emission each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon foot print of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the non-metallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned to extract some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major non-metallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study exhibited that the compressive strength of the geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of the conventional concrete prepared using the OPC.

"Classification is an important aspect of mineral processing plants and if not operated efficiently can compromise both the throughput and recovery of the circuit. This paper discusses the benefits that can be obtained by operating the classification section efficiently. Since classification in most of the mineral processing plants is carried out using either hydrocyclones or screens the case studies involving the two classifiers were used in the discussion. Studies where optimising the classification circuit lead to improvements in the performance of the overall plant were included to show the benefits of paying attention to this area that is usually neglected. The data from the mill-float mill float, SABC, and Single Stage SAG mill circuit case studies have shown that the circuit throughput can be increased throughputs without compromising recoveries by optimising the classification circuit. On plants where the ore can be liberated at coarser sizes the experimental results have shown that replacing hydrocyclones with high frequency screens can lead to improved plant throughput with no detrimental effect on recovery. The discussion has included information on design and operational considerations for plants that have or intend to use hydrocyclones or screens that could make the classification circuit more efficient.INTRODUCTIONComminution is the process in which particles are reduced in size mainly by crushing and grinding. In most mineral processing circuits comminution is carried out to liberate the valuable minerals prior to subjecting the ore to a recovery process were values are concentrated or extracted (Mainza, Evertsson, Benzer, Tavares, Powell, Rule, Plint, …, 2013). Comminution is an energy intensive process and is usually achieved in stages. It is common to have a classifier after each comminution stage. The process is carried out in stages to minimize energy usage and to improve the efficiency of the process in meeting product specifications. Although comminution circuits have been advancing classification has remained a key component of the comminution circuit design (Mainza et al., 2013). Mainza et al. (2013) summarised the role of classification in mineral processing circuit as: to allow material in the equipment that can promote high operational efficiency, to improve material handling in the circuit, to minimize overgrinding of material to reduce energy consumption, and to provide the best quality product to enter the next stage of processing. Classification stages are employed in comminution circuits to ensure that high throughputs are processed without compromising the product quality or to produce a fine product at relatively low energy. If neglected classification can have detrimental effects on plant performance."

Production sharing and cost apportionment in joint ventures is commonplace in Australasia today and elsewhere. It is a recognised convention that, with the exception of a free carry situation, joint venture participants usually share the proceeds of the joint venture in direct proportion to their respective participating interest, after having first paid its respective cash calls, in advance, to cover the projectÆs ongoing operating and capital cost requirements.In surface mines, the parties simply pay their way and take their proceeds in this manner. In underground mines, the situation is no different, though treatment of capital, depreciation and tax may differ between the parties. A common feature in many cases is the creation of a joint venture entity to conduct the business. This entity then collects cash from the parties, banks it, employs the staff, runs the operation, provides reports and pays out the proceeds. This convention appears to be relatively simple in application. In practice, it has been known to be complicated in the situation where the participants take their product at the mine gate and undertake their own marketing and selling arrangements. A more complex situation presents itself where the joint venture tenement boundary with an unrelated third party straddles an economic deposit. In this scenario, both the joint venture parties and the third party may wish to mine the deposit, sharing some infrastructure and costs, yet taking their own product as it is produced. A case study outlining such a situation is presented in the paper, outlining firstly how the major cost categories were identified and treated for cost apportionment purposes. Secondly, a mechanism for the equitable apportionment of product is suggested. Finally, issues such as timing and cost reporting are dealt with, together with a checklist of points which should be considered when a similar situation might arise in the future.

Erie Mining Co. is a 10.3-million-tpy pellet producer on the east end of the Mesabi Range 60 miles north of Duluth. Its complex includes facilities for mining, crushing, grinding and beneficiation in addition to a pellet plant and power plant. A 74-mile railroad links the mine and plant to Taconite Harbor on the shore of Lake Superior. The concentrate recovery ratio at Erie is about 1: 3, and this, along with stripping activity, makes it necessary for the company to mine nearly a million tons of material a week. At the outset, all crude ore mined at Erie was hauled entirely by rail, but with expansion into additional mining areas, the company made a gradual transition towards truck-to-rail haulage. Today, in Erie's 11th year of operation, over 50% of all crude taconite mined is transported by truck to loading pockets where it is transferred to rail cars. Future years will see more taconite moved in this manner. Thus, the company has an increasing interest in tire performance.

Preparation of pure scandium metal was accomplished by calcium reduction of the fluoride by two methods; a low-temperatzdre alloy process and direct reduction with subsequent distillation of the product. The following properties were determined: melting point: 1181OK; boiling point (calculated): 3000°K; lattice constants at 298°K (hexagonal lattice): a = 3.308 * 0.001 A, c = 5.267 * 0.003A; calculated density at 298°K, g per cm3: 2,990 + 0.007; electrical resistivity, ohm-cm: 299°K, 66.6 ± 0.2 x 10 -6; 373oK, 77.4 * 0.2 x 10 -6; thermal coefficient at 299°K, ohm-cm per deg: 5.4 X x; heat of sublimation at 298°K, kcal pel- mole: 80.79. The vapor pressure was determined as a function of temperature between 1505o and 1748°K, with the data fitted to a straight line shielding the equation: Log Pmm = -1.718 X 104/ToK + 8.298. SCANDIUM, element number 21, was first discovered by Nilson in 1879 and was recognized as the Ekaboron as predicted by Mendeleff. As it is in group III of the periodic table, the general properties are a little like aluminum and also resemble quite closely the properties of yttrium and the rare-earth metals, in both the metallic and ionic form. Although the earth's crust contains approximately 5 ppm of scandium (the element is as abundant as arsenic and twice as abundant as boron) it generally occurs so widely distributed that it has earned the reputation of being very rare. The one exception to this is the mineral thortveitite, which has been found in Madagascar (20 pct Sc2O3) and in Norway (35 pct Sc2O3). Scandium also occurs in small but distinct amounts in uranium and rare-earth ores; the recent larger scale processing of these materials has made some scandium available from these sources. As with other naturally-occurring monoisotopic elements (except Be), scandium contains an odd number of protons and an even number of neutrons. Scandium metal was first prepared by Fischer and coworkers1 in 1937 by electrolysis of scandium chloride in a molten eutectic mixture of lithium and potassium chlorides, using molten zinc as a cathode and collector of the scandium metal produced. The zinc was removed from the Zn-2 pct Sc alloy by vacuum distillation, leaving a product reported to be 94 to 98 pct Sc, with the main impurities being iron and silicon. They reported a melting point of 1400° C for this material. Scandium has also been prepared by the reduction of scandium chloride with potassium metal in a glass apparatus by Bommer and Hohmann in 1941,' resulting in a mixture of metal and potassium chloride; these workers did not isolate the metal proper, but the X-ray diffraction of the slag-metal mixture showed it to be hexagonal with a = 3.30A, c = 5.45A. petru3, 4 and coworkers have recently reported the preparation of the metal in a compact form by the reduction of either ScF3 or ScC13 with calcium metal and subsequent distillation of the product. This process probably yielded a metal of high purity, but they list no chemical analysis nor do they list any of the properties of their product. Previous related work in this Laboratory has been concerned with the production of yttrium and the rare-earth metals and the determination of their physical properties. Because of its similarity to these metals, scandium is being included in this study. PREPARATION OF SCANDIUM METAL The preparation of yttrium and the rare-earth metals may be accomplished by reduction of their fluorides with calcium metal in tantalum crucibles.5 This process leads to the introduction of tantalum (up to 0.5 pct) as an impurity in the higher melting rare earths, but since the tantalum occurs as dendrites, uncombined with the rare-earth metals, its presence is not objectionable in some cases. The preparation of scandium metal in this manner, however, was found to yield a product containing 2 to 5 pct Ta. The Sangdong Tungsten/Molybdenum Deposit is located in the Republic of Korea and was discovered in 1916. At this time Korea was a colony of Japan. It was mined for two years after discovery closing in 1918. Full production recommenced in 1933, and from that point until 1945, it was the major source of tungsten for armour plate for the Japanese military. After World War 2 the US government ran the mine until late 1946. The mine operation then passed to Korean ownership but production ceased during the Korean War and did not recommence until late 1953. The mine ceased operation in 1992 due to low metal prices. From the late 1960s to the time of closure, Sangdong was the largest tungsten mine in the world (Kim, 2002). An understanding of changing mining methods over time has been critical in assessing the potential of redeveloping the Sangdong Deposit.

In this project, low grade copper ore samples were obtained from two mining sites in the US, and they were chalcopyrite-rich (sample A) and conichalcite-rich (sample B) ore. Copper grades were 0.6% and 0.4% for the two samples, A and B, respectively. Leaching experiments were conducted by bottle roll tests for 24 hours, and various lixiviant systems were applied. Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and glycine were used as alternative lixiviants to sulfuric acid. Oxidants including ferric ion and hydrogen peroxide were tested. The results showed the copper extraction of sample A increased after adding 1 g/L ferric ion in sulfuric acid and MSA solution, from 20% to 36%, but further increase was not observed with higher ferric ion concentration. The copper recovery increased significantly with H2O2 concentration, and over 80% copper recovery was obtained with 10% H2O2. For sample B, the copper dissolution kinetics were relatively fast and reached the maximum value in five hours. Around 60% copper were extracted in sulfuric acid and MSA solution. Copper recovery slightly increased after adding ferric ion and H2O2. Glycine is a weaker lixiviant for both samples, the copper extractions were 36% and 4% respectively. INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite is the most abundant copper sulfide mineral on earth, and it is one of the most refractory copper minerals regarding chemical processing. The declining copper grade and depletion of copper oxide deposits stimulate the development of hydrometallurgical process to extract copper from chalcopyrite. The dissolution of chalcopyrite by ferric ion is normally illustrated as Equation (1) and (2) (Dutrizac & MacDonald, 1974): CuFeS2 + 4Fe3+ → Cu2+ + 5Fe2+ + 2S0 (1) CuFeS2 + 4Fe3+ + 3O2 + 2H2O → Cu2+ + 5Fe2+ + 2H2SO4 (2) However, slow kinetics are usually observed from chalcopyrite leaching at ambient temperature and pressure. Researchers attribute the slow kinetics to passivation during chalcopyrite dissolution, and different passivation products are also proposed (Klauber, 2008). In recent years, many efforts have made to develop new methods to extract copper from chalcopyrite, such as utilizing bacteria or stronger oxidant (Zhao et al., 2015; Ruiz-Sánchez & Lapidus, 2017).

"Abstract: The use of micropiles has greatly increased the last twenty years, including applications involving low capacity micropile networks, seismic retrofitting, underpinning of existing foundations and high capacity foundations for new structures. This paper presents a field study of the behaviour of single hollow core micropiles in firm to stiff lean clay. Eight micropiles were installed using hollow bars (76 mm OD and 48 mm ID) with air/water flushing technique and advanced to a depth of 5.75m: six micropiles were installed using 228 mm (9 in) drill bit and two micropiles were installed using 178 mm (7 in) drill bit. All micropiles were instrumented with linear potentiometers to measure the vertical displacement of the micropile head and vibrating wire strain gauges to measure the axial strain at three points along the micropile length. Twelve full scale tests were conducted on the eight micropiles, four monotonic compression, four cyclic compression and four tension tests. Only the results of micropiles tested under monotonic compression is presented in this paper. The full scale load tests and a comparison of the performance of the micropiles with 228 mm and 178 mm drill bit are presented and discussed in terms of load-displacement curves, bond strength and tip resistance. The results showed that the proposed values of bond strength in FHWA give a conservative design of the hollow core micropiles. The micropiles constructed with 228 mm drill bit performed marginallybetter than the micropile with 178 mm drill bit in terms of the ultimate capacity.IntroductionMicropiles have been defined in a variety of ways, but can universally be classified as small diameter (less than 300mm), bored, and grouted in place piles (FHWA, 2005; Bruce et al., 1999; and Scherer et al., 1996). They can sustain axial (compression and tension) and/or lateral loads. Dr. Fernando Lizzi used micropiles in 1952 for underpinning of historic buildings damaged during World War II (Bruce D. A., 1988). Since then, micropile applications have expanded rapidly to include underpinning for existing foundations, in situ reinforcement, and seismic retrofitting and foundations for new construction. In particular, micropiles have graduated from use in low-capacity micropile networks toapplications as single high-capacity foundation.Micropiles capacity is affected by the construction technique, which involves drilling, placing reinforcement, and placing or pressurizing the grout. For example, the drilling method influences the degree of bonding between the grout and the ground, and the placement of reinforcement and the choice of grouting method have an impact on the development of the bonding. Bruce et al. (1997) showed that grout/ground bond is most affected by the grouting method. Based on the type of pressure applied during the grouting process, micropiles are classified as follows (FHWA, 2005): Type A: grout is placed under gravity pressure only using either sand-cement mortars or neat cement grout. Type B: pressures typically in the range of 0.5 MPa to 1 MPa are applied in order to inject the neat cement grout into the drilled hole while the temporary drill casing is withdrawn. Type C: involves two-step process; neat cement grout is first placed in the hole under gravity pressure head only as in type A, and prior to the hardening of this primary grout, a similar grout is then injected via a preplaced sleeved grout pipe at a pressure of at least 1 MPa. Type D: like type C, this type is a twostep process: neat cement grout is placed in the hole under gravity pressure head only (but pressure could be applied in some cases), additional grout is injected via a sleeved grout pipe at a pressure of 2 MPa to 8 MPa once the primary grout has hardened. A crescente necessidade por resultados de análises laboratoriais dentro das indústrias são cada vez mais exigentes em termos de tempo de resposta e precisão. Aliado a isso, a elevação do volume de minério de ferro exportado e o aumento da variabilidade desses produtos requerem processos cada vez mais rigorosos e tomados de decisões mais rápidas. Nesse contexto, os analisadores on-line têm um papel fundamental, pois atendem tais exigências, além de preservarem a segurança operacional. Este trabalho tem por objetivo mostrar o desenvolvimento da implantação de analisadores de umidade on line na descarga dos vagões da Vale no Terminal Ponta da Madeira. A metodologia utilizada na medição de umidade dos analisadores usa o princípio de transmissão de micro-ondas, que é a melhor tecnologia disponível no mercado para este fim. Dentre as etapas de implantação, que abrange desde a aquisição dos equipamentos até a avaliação dos controles e ajustes operacionais, é mostrado o período de cada etapa, os problemas encontrados e as soluções adotadas. Em suma, atualmente há medição de umidade on line na descarga deste site e está em fase de implantação a análise durante o carregamento do embarque para controle de processo.

Um complexo de MoB/CoCr, aplicado por aspersão térmica, vem se destacando na literatura como uma boa opção para revestimento das peças imersas no banho de 55%Al-Zn, prometendo melhora drástica na resistência a corrosão, quando comparado ao revestimento convencional WC-Co. Este promissor revestimento foi aplicado nas extremidades do rolo estabilizador da chapa de aço imerso no banho de 55%Al-Zn da ArcelorMittal Vega em quatro diferentes faixas com variação da espessura de sua camada. O revestimento apresentou danos após 18 dias e 3 períodos de imersão, não sendo economicamente viável para a maioria das linhas de galvanização à quente. Porém, quando comparado com desenvolvimentos similares, pode-se admitir um excelente potencial ao revestimento com MoB/CoCr, sendo necessário a continuidade do desenvolvimento com novas variações da espessura da camada de revestimento aplicada.

Many of the worldÆs larger iron ore deposits are hosted by rock sequences of Archaean to early Proterozoic age. Most models for the genesis of these deposits are influenced, either directly or indirectly, by the nature of the atmosphere at the time of their formation, and more specifically by the presence or absence of oxygen in the early atmosphere. Since the early-1950s, the geological literature suggests that the Archaean atmosphere was æreducingÆ, and that it may not have contained significant amounts of free oxygen until ca 2 Ga. There are many different definitions of the term æreducingÆ, but the criterion adopted here is whether crustal iron was limited to Fe2+, or whether Fe3+ was also widespread, ie was there scope for redox changes in the state of iron? Significantly, major Australian banded iron formations span this period of inferred atmosphere transition, eg Mt Goldsworthy, Mt Tom Price, Middleback Ranges. Geological evidence for a reducing Archaean atmosphere is both ambiguous and controversial (see review by Phillips, Law and Myers, 2001). Many earlier ideas (eg no Archaean redbeds; all very large iron ore deposits being post-Archaean) have been disproved by dating, whereas other evidence (eg homogeneous detrital gold grains, inferred palaeosols) has not withstood geological scrutiny. The interpretation of some data sets (eg inferred detrital uraninite and pyrite in some Archaean meta-sedimentary rocks) is still controversial. In fact, some lines of evidence now suggest that oxygen was present in the atmosphere well before 2.5 Ga (eg sulfates in the Pilbara craton, carbon distribution in clastic sedimentary rocks). An oxidising Archaean atmosphere has important implications for the development of iron formations. First, the atmosphere is an obvious potential source of oxygen to stabilise ferric iron minerals. Second, reduced fluids in equilibrium with ferrous iron are commonly inferred to transport iron in solution to the depositional site. The redox state of the atmosphere thus provides critical constraints on the solution chemistry of surface waters, effective transport paths for iron and particularly on viable precipitation mechanisms. Iron formations developed from fluids in equilibrium with the atmosphere also have the potential to provide important constraints on the evolution of EarthÆs early atmosphere. If an oxygenated atmosphere is a necessary condition for the development of iron formations, then the Archaean atmosphere must have been oxidising since at least 3.5 Ga. If the redox state of the atmosphere is not a necessary condition, then the time distribution of iron formations cannot be used to provide constraints on atmospheric evolution. Given these uncertainties, models for the genesis of iron ore deposits of Archaean or early Proterozoic age should not rely on a reducing atmosphere in the absence of independent evidence and the alternative of an oxidising atmosphere should also be considered.

Since the late 1960's the Interstate Division for Baltimore City (IDBC) has been planning and developing the Interstate Highway System for the city to meet regional planning goals. The principal goals are to provide convenient access to the central business district and the port while diverting through traffic away from these congested areas. Interstate Route 95, an eight-lane highway carrying north-south traffic, has headed the city's priority list; during the 1970's its construction proceeded steadily from both east and west towards the harbor. Closing the final 8800-ft (2670-m) gap under the harbor will complete Interstate 95's construction. This final portion, known as the Ft. McHenry Tunnel project, will be built in nine construction contracts. Construction costs of the complete project are expected to exceed $700 million, making it the costliest single project in the Interstate Highway System. Full funding is being provided initially by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the Maryland Department of Transportation will re-pay the 10 percent local share from toll receipts within the first three years of operation.

"Micron or sub-micron size gold inclusions in sulphide minerals cannot be extracted by conventional cyanidation. The gold surfaces must first be exposed by decomposition of the sulphides. As an alternative to roasting, pressure oxidation was found to be a most satisfactory method to decompose the sulphides and expose the gold particles. For cyanidation the pressure oxidation pulp has to be neutralized and stabilized with lime. It was found that thiourea can extract the gold directly from the pressure oxidation pulp without pH adjustment and oxidant addition. The main obstacles against the common use of thiourea are circumvented by a recently described control method of the emf during leaching.INTRODUCTION Amalgamation and cyanidation are the most conventional processes for gold extraction. The prerequisite for gold extraction is the possibility of gold surface to be contacted by mercury or by the cyanide solution. Encapsulated gold has little chance of contact and this leads to poor extractions.The reasons why a gold ore may be refractory are: micron or sub-micron size gold particles included in the sulphide minerals, such as pyrite and arsenopyrite; presence of and association with antimony, arsenic, tellurium and carbonaceous minerals. Some alternative processes, such as double oxidation(1,2), pretreatment with lime , H202, chlorine and Caro's acid, roasting and thiourea leach, have solved some of the problems of ""refractory"", but the sub-micron gold in sulphide minerals still shows little response. Roasting and the cyanidation of the calcine was one of the most successful approaches for this type of gold ore.There are two disadvantages to the roasting process: (1) the generation of sulphur, arsenic, antimony and mercury containing gases is undesirable and the control is extremely expensive; (2) gold particles might be fused in the roasted product and the oxidized base metals in the calcine might reduce the cyanidation efficiency. In recent years the pressure oxidation process has been considered as one of the more effective and satisfactory methods to decompose the sulphide minerals and expose the gold surface to the cyanide leach solution. The pollution problem could be better controlled and the gold extraction is more amenable."

A elipsometria é uma técnica poderosa capaz não somente de medir espessura de variados filmes finos, mas também caracterizar propriedades ópticas e elétricas dos mesmos. Foram testados vários procedimentos para acessar o substrato da folha-de-flandres e vários modelos que reproduzissem as características elipsométricas medidas. Escolheu-se então melhor procedimento adequado para acessar as características do substrato e o melhor modelo para caracterização elipsométrica do filme fino de óleo.

A whole new group of non-ferrous pyrometallurgical processes with the ability to utilize tonnage oxygen and capture sulphur dioxide were developed and commercialized over the period 1940s–1980s. Many of these earlier process developments were undertaken with limited knowledge of the process chemistry and influence of key process variables; in many cases, piloting helped provide much new physico-chemical data, but gaps remained. The second generation versions of these technologies of today provide all the primary copper, nickel and lead produced worldwide by pyro-metallurgical smelting. Further, process development has continued and a new generation of copper and lead smelting technologies have also been developed in China since the 1990s. The older reverberatory and blast furnaces have been progressively replaced by the newer technologies—a good example being the introduction in 1992 of the copper IsaSmelt technology at the Mt. Isa smelter in Australia where the former fluid bed roaster and reverberatory furnaces were replaced by a single new smelting unit, together with an acid plant for sulphur dioxide collection. The development of these new technologies was made possible by investment in fundamental and applied research. The lesson for the future is, in order to sustain these improvements, continued investment in research and development capability is required—to do otherwise is to risk obsolescence and lack of competiveness in the world market. A whole new group of non-ferrous pyrometallurgical processes with the ability to utilize tonnage oxygen and capture sulphur dioxide were developed and commercialized over the period 1940s–1980s. Many of these earlier process developments were undertaken with limited knowledge of the process chemistry and influence of key process variables; in many cases, piloting helped provide much new physico-chemical data, but gaps remained. The second generation versions of these technologies of today provide all the primary copper, nickel and lead produced worldwide by pyro-metallurgical smelting. Further, process development has continued and a new generation of copper and lead smelting technologies have also been developed in China since the 1990s. The older reverberatory and blast furnaces have been progressively replaced by the newer technologies—a good example being the introduction in 1992 of the copper IsaSmelt technology at the Mt. Isa smelter in Australia where the former fluid bed roaster and reverberatory furnaces were replaced by a single new smelting unit, together with an acid plant for sulphur dioxide collection. The development of these new technologies was made possible by investment in fundamental and applied research. The lesson for the future is, in order to sustain these improvements, continued investment in research and development capability is required—to do otherwise is to risk obsolescence and lack of competiveness in the world market. The abundances and abundance relationships of lead, zinc, copper and silver in the major sulphide lenses at Broken Hill are examined, and their possible geochemical significance discussed.When expressed as atoms per cent, zinc is the most abundant base metal throughout the whole .group of orebodies, the highest average lead: zinc ratio (No. 2 lens) being about 0·45, the lowest (No. 1 lensZinc Lode group) being in the 0·12-0 ·14 range. Lead and silver are clearly higher in the lower two orebodies, but the abundance of zinc shows no apparent relationship with stratigraphical position. Among the base metals copper is conspicuously low and remarkably uniform, a feature noted in other conformable orebodies.Although, as has been recognised for many years, abundances of silver and lead, and lead and zinc, are sympathetically related, correlation within the pairs is variable and generally of low degree. Silver and lead show distinctly the better correlation, particularly in No. 3 lens. On the basis of lead: zinc ratios, No. 2' and No. 3· lenses, on the one hand, and the No. 1 lenses, Rhodonitic and Siliceous Zinc Lodes on the other, constitute two groups. However on the basis of silver : lead ratios, No. 3 lens stands alone, No. 2 lens showing clear affinities with the higher layers. Ternary relationships between copper-zinc-Iead and silver-zinc-Iead emphasize the very close constitutional relationship between the No. 1 lenses and the two "zinc lodes".The possible implications of these relationships are then discussed in the light of the' two principal theories-hydrothermal replacement or chemical sedimentation-held for the formation of the Broken Hill ores. It is pointed out that the ratios of the four metals in the ores are rather different from those found in most igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in seawater. For 'example, whereas copper and zinc are present in almost equal amounts in most terrestrial materials, copper in the ores is only about one-hundredth of the amount of zinc. Lead has increased somewhat, but the ratio of silver to lead has fallen; in spite of its recognition as a source of silver, the Broken Hill lode is impoverished in silver with respect to lead as compared with most common terrestrial materials.No solutions are offered to these prob'lems of abundance.
