Three polymers of varying chemistries and molecular weights have been used to depress talc in a model sulfide ore consisting of talc, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. Flotation testing revealed a distinct hierarchy of effectiveness of the polymers in the depression of talc (HP Starch > Polymer-H > Dextrin WY) but a different order of effectiveness for depression selectivity (Dextrin WY > Polymer-H > HP Starch). Adsorption isotherm determinations for the gangue and valuable mineral phases indicate that the differences in selectivity are partially due to adsorbed amount variations, with Dextrin WY adsorbing marginally less on the sulfides than Polymer-H. Contact angle measurements on packed particle beds have revealed that the polymers have differing abilities to reduce the contact angle of talc and the sulfide minerals. An explanation of the observed trends is given in terms of the binding mechanisms of the polymers on the talc and the sulfide mineral phases. Order of addition effects between collector and depressant were also investigated using adsorption isotherm determinations for the polymers in the presence of a pre-adsorbed layer of collector and vice versa. Adsorption of the polymers was not affected by the presence of the collector. Similar results were obtained for the adsorption of collector in the presence of pre-adsorbed layers of polymer.

Networks of monitoring wells were established prior to mining at four longwall mine sites in the Appalachians to monitor the effect of mining on water levels, water quality and well yield. Two of the sites were located in stream valleys and the other two sites were located on hilltops. The depth to the mined seam ranged from 500-850 feet with the deeper cover being associated with the hilltop sites. Maximum declines in groundwater levels during and after mining were an order of magnitude less in the stream valley aquifers than in the hilltop aquifers. However, water levels in hilltop wells located outside the area immediately above the panel were unaffected. Water quality changes in wells as a result of longwall mining were negligible at all four sites. Increases in aquifer transmissivity and well yield were much more pronounced in the stream valley aquifers than in the hilltop aquifers. The significantly larger recharge area for the stream valley aquifers than that for the hilltop aquifers may partially account for the differing responses of these two classes of aquifers to longwall mining. These observations appear to be consistent with the stress-relief fracture model for Appalachian Plateau groundwater hydrology proposed by Wyrick and Borchers in 1981.

Em contrapartida é ainda apontada como uma grande geradora de resíduos sólidos urbanos, que variam em função da matéria-prima utilizada e também da mão-de-obra. Dentro desta faixa de mercado, o número de edificações que empregam blocos cerâmicos como elementos de vedação ou estruturais, é bastante expressivo, principalmente pela facilidade de produção destes artefatos no Brasil. Neste trabalho buscou-se avaliar a influência dos blocos cerâmicos, quando utilizados fora de norma, desempenham nos custos do revestimento, quantificando as perdas e as identificando. Pode-se concluir que o uso de blocos fora dos padrões normativos apresenta influencia considerada nos custos de uma edificação.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory research to determine the effects of a barium-based fuel additive on diesel particulate emissions. The test engine was typical of types used to power underground coal min-ing equipment. Test parameters consisted of baseline measurements without additive, three fuel additive concentrations, and five steady-state engine loads, all at 1,200 r/min. Additive effects on soot mass concen-tration, opacity, particle size distribution, volatile fraction, and NOx emissions were determined. Important findings are as follows: Using the manufacturer's recom-mended additive concentration increased the gravimetrically measured mass of particulate by 30 to 80 pct at four of the five steady-state load conditions. Soot measurements by optical methods did not agree with those by gravimetric techniques, for additive-treated fuels. The additive reduced volatile hydrocarbons adsorbed on filter deposits by up to 50 pet. At most engine loads, carbon particulate was also reduced. About 40 pet of the barium added to the fuel was accounted for in the exhaust. The health implications for miners were considered, but no firm conclusions were drawn or recommendations made because the results are for steady-state conditions, which may not be representative of real-world operation of diesel-powered equipment underground.

O Processo Bayer para a produção de Óxido de Alumínio consiste em dissolver o alumínio presente na minério de alumínio (Bauxita) com soda cáustica à quente. Os resíduos insolúveis são separados por decantação e filtração. Após lavagem deste resíduo para a recuperação da alumina e soda cáustica ele é transferido para áreas de disposição. A Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio produz 420 mil toneladas de alumínio por ano gerando cerca de 2.400 toneladas de resíduo de bauxita por dia. Este resíduo é transferido para uma área de disposição, denominada Palmital, com capacidade de estocagem para mais 9 anos. Atualmente, o Palmital contém cerca de 2 milhões de metros cúbicos de água sobrenadante. Esta água contém alumínio e soda cáustica dissolvidos que podem ser reutilizados na Refinaria de Alumina. Este trabalho estuda formas de reutilização desta água sobrenadante visando aumentar a vida útil do Palmital, ou seja, aumentar o volume disponível para disposição de resíduo de bauxita.

Barite In 1987, United States mine production of barite increased 15.870, consumption (sold or used by grinding plants) increased by 6.97, and imports are estimated to have fallen by 19.57. World mine production decreased by 137, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of US produced barite, fob mine, decreased 1.4%, according to the Bureau. The declared value for cif US port of all imported unground barite during the first 10 months of 1987 decreased from $39.02/t ($35.40 per st) to $37.16/t ($33.71 per st), the Bureau stated. Nevada continued to be the leading US producer of' barite with 637r of the total. It is followed by Georgia, Missouri, California, Tennessee, and Montana. The Bureau of Mines estimates 657 of the US mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 35°/r was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. This sector continued to increase. Of the total consumption (used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers), it is estimated that 8070 was used in drilling fluids and 2017( in the non-oilfield sector - barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics, and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased slightly. But the average number of rotary rigs operating decreased from 964 in 1986 to 936 in 1987. This is the lowest number of operating rigs reported since 1949. The increase in consumption in this sector is due to an increase of rigs operating in the US Gulf and other higher consumption areas over 1986. Crude barite imports were estimated to be down by 19.5% in 1987. Still, they accounted for 637 of the barite consumed in the US. During the first 10 months, China continued to be the leading exporter to the US with 86.970, followed by Mexico with 10.997, and Morocco 2.107(. About 5Y of the imported ore was used in the nonoilfield sector. Ground barite imports dropped from 19.8 kt to 8.8 kt (21,800 st to 9800 st) in 1987. Of this amount, 1.4 kt (1598 st) was used in drilling muds and the remainder of the non-oilfield use. During 1987, a few more grinding plants that supplied the drilling fluid market were closed. Along the US Gulf Coast, there are 13 operating plants versus a high of 31 in 1981. Cameron Offshore reopened its grinding plant at Cameron, LA. New Riverside Ochre Co. of Cartersville, GA, purchased a jigging-washing plant in Missouri and plans to place it in operation this year on a new deposit near Cartersville, GA. Milpark purchased Hughes Drilling Fluid in 1987 and operates under Milpark. US mine production will probably stay about the same as 1987. Price increases in the 10 % range for imported ore are expected due to water freight and the weak dollar. Baker Hughes estimates the average number of operating rotary rigs at 1070. A slight increase is expected in the non-drilling fluid market (chemicals, glass, and filler). Bauxite and alumina L. Baumgardner, US Bureau of Mines Domestic bauxite production in 1987, expressed as dried equivalent, was 581 kt (640,400 st), a 14% increase over 1986. US mine production amounted to less than 170 of total world production. Virtually none of the domestic bauxite was consumed in the production of primary alumina metal. About 30% of the bauxite produced by US mines was calcined to produce 117 kt (128,970 st) for use in abrasives, catalysts, chemicals, proppants, and refractories. Most of the uncalcined bauxite was refined to specialty aluminum oxide (alumina) forms. Metallurgical grade bauxite was imported from 10 countries in 1987. Principal suppliers of the 9.8 Mt (10.8 million st) were Guinea (4270), Jamaica (3501,), Australia (127), and Brazil (57). Graphite is elemental carbon that crystallizes in the hexagonal system as six-sided platelets. It occurs naturally and is mined. And it can be made artificially from petroleum coke in the form of shapes (electrodes) and powders. The market for most kinds of graphite in most end-uses was good in 2004. The 2005 graphite market looks positive. The major graphite prices, as given in Industrial Minerals, remained unchanged throughout the year. The preliminary 2004 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) prices for natural graphite showed almost no change for crystalline flake. They were $600/t ($544/st) in 2004 and$622/t ($564/st) in 2003. Mexican amorphous graphite was almost unchanged at $150/t ($136/st) in 2004 from$152/t ($138/st) in 2003.

This publication summarizes the in-house and contract research and development projects programed for fiscal pear 1980 by the Bureau of Mines under its Minerals Environmental Research activity. The document provides a mechanism for interested parties, including potential contractors, to gain insight into ongoing and projected work of the Bureau's environmental research efforts. Research to identify and correct environmental problems associated with mining and metallurgical operations has long been an integral part of the Bureau's mission. Through the years, efforts of various Bureau programs have yielded valuable information on the origin and control of many of these problems. With the reorganization of the Bureau of Mines in 1979, the Minerals Environmental Technology program was structured to consolidate these efforts into a single program that will systematically investigate al aspects of mining- and processing-related environmental pollution and damage-from initial discovery of the mineral resource to ultimate return of the land to productive use. In fiscal year 1980, the Bureau received an appropriation of about $21 million to conduct research and development work on these problems.

High-pressure waterjet technology is proposed as an alternative tool for selective underground mining of high-grade ore sections in stratiform orebodies showing a preferred ?bottom? or ?top? enrichment such as the Witwatersrand reefs and the Bushveld Complex platiniferous reefs. This technique, utilizing known mining technology together with more advanced machinery and additives as used in industrial and cleaning applications, may lead to an increased life-of-mine (LOM) for mining operations. A series of experiments was successfully carried out in a laboratory on Witwatersrand quartzite material, indicating acceptable cutting performance. Mining volumes by selectively cutting of reef portions are considered to be comparable to traditional drilling and blasting. Economic advantages of waterjet mining include energy savings due to the lower quantity of gangue rock to be hoisted to surface, as well as savings by a decrease in the usage of blasting materials. Capital expenditure of waterjet cutting, if applied on a broad scale, could be lower in the long term than that of conventional drilling and blasting methods. Mining by the application of high-pressure waterjet technology could become a competitive ?green technology? improving the economics and safety of labour-intensive mining operations. This paper suggests that waterjet cutting at an industrial scale can become a routine hard-rock mining technique in the future. "Column flotation circuit engineering has matured to a good level of understanding regarding testing, scale-up and design. Some of the factors important to the process of implementing columns are addressed in this paper, highlighting the following issues• operating bias and the maximum achievable solids carrying rate for a column application.• internal circulating loads of full scale and pilot plant flotation columns• short-circuiting oflarge scale columns and the impact on separation selectivity• the number of stages in a column circuit and the impact on selectivity.The paper uses several case studies, from pilot plant to full scale implementation, to illustrate these design issues.1. IntroductionTen years ago, in 1984, there were very few column flotation installations world wide and the largest columns were about I . 5 to 2 m diameter or square. During the following decade there have been in the heighbourhood of 80 column installations that have been successful and profitable, as both retrofits and green-fields plants. Now, columns as large as 3 to 4 m are not uncommon. Examples of installations with many large columns include Escondida, with ten columns each at 4 m square, and P T Freeport Indonesia, with 21 columns: nine 3 m diameter columns, four 2.4 m diameter columns and, starting up in April I 995, eight 3.6 m diameter columns.During this growth period there have also been column installations that can be considered as failures. In the majority of these cases, the reason for their failure has been an insufficient installed capacity for applications where there is a high weight recovery of solids to the froth product These include zinc cleaning, copper cleaning and iron ore flotation (silica flotation from a feed that is 15 to 30 %Si02) An application with high weight recovery to the froth product makes column scale-up and circuit design more complicated. This is particularly so if a high degree of selectivity is also required while attaining a high weight recovery, which can happen with iron ore flotation in columns."

A program has been conducted to determine the feasibility of providing a borehole liner for Kelly Bar drilled boreholes in Southern Florida. The concept was to drill the borehole with the Kelly Bar and with it still in the borehole insert a tube which would remain in the unstable ground after withdrawl of the bar. The tube then will provide an unobstructed borehole for the charging of explosives upon completion of the drilling the shot pattern.

"Hangingwall sloughing is the major cause of unplanned stope dilution in open stope mining. Understanding the hangingwall sloughing mechanism can guide the stope design in minimizing the unplanned dilution and improving muck size and therefore mining efficiency. Though the modified stability graph method may be adopted to assess the hangingwall stability, for mines where the hangingwall is inaccessible, the required parameters are difficult to define and some of the simple influential factors cannot be easily identified in this method to provide guidelines for stope design.This paper identifies the main modes of hangingwall sloughing in open stope mining based on detailed data collected from mined-out stopes and site observations, applies the voussoir beam notation to analysis of the hangingwall sloughing mechanism, compares the model analysis results with the collected stope data, and provides guidelines for stope design and model application. Finally, examples are given to demonstrate the time and support effects on hangingwall sloughing and stope dilution."

CSIRO Mineral has recently developed a new electron microprobe based system for characterizing zircon grains from heavy minerals sand deposits. The system acquires cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra, X-ray and backscattered electron (BSE) signals in parallel. By scanning over a specified target area, CL wavelength and X-ray element distribution maps of polished zircon grains can be acquired. Post-inspection of the combined dataset using in-house developed software enables correlations between chemistry and structure to be investigated. The new method offers significant benefits over traditional CL and BSE techniques in that direct comparison with the elemental concentrations over the same region is now achievable. By combining the electron microprobe results with data for the same mapped region obtained via a nuclear microprobe, significantly better detection limits (~ 1ppb) for elements with atomic numbers greater than iron are possible. The ability to measure spatially related analytical data and then investigate the correlation of the CL spectra with chemical data is an important advancement in the characterization of zircons. "Since the establishment of froth flotation as an effective method of mineral beneficiation there has been both academic and industrial interest in the levels of the various reagents required to perform the desired separations. Academic interest was spurred by a desire to understand the mechanisms involved - industrial interest by a need to improve the efficiency of the process. These efficiency improvements can take two forms: cost reductions due to reduced reagent consumption and/or improved separation efficiencies. The latter are indicated by either improved grade-recovery relationships for removal of a valuable mineral from gangue, or improved separation of two similar valuable minerals.The processing of lower grade ore bodies at higher tonnage rates has necessitated increased interest in both reagent consumption and metal recovery. Furthermore, the development of accurate and functional on-stream analysis equipment in the 1960's and 1970's has allowed for a better understanding of the dynamic processes involved in a flotation circuit and has required a more concrete statement of the relationships and reactions between the minerals and chemicals in the flotation pulp. Development of these relationships is necessary in order to make use of on-stream analysis to control the process at, or near its more efficient level."

"As part of a larger research program, a number of MEGATEM airborne electromagnetic (EM) test flights were flown over the Gallen massive sulfide deposit in northwest Québec. A particularity of this test site is that a major part of the ore body was extracted before the MEGATEM survey. Therefore one of the purposes of this study was to verify the ability of the system to detect the remaining massive sulfides below the water in the open pit. The open pit is also surrounded by a metallic fence, and a power line is present in the vicinity. A large part of the case study involved accounting for the impact of infrastructure and acidic water on the survey, which will help in the interpretation of airborne EM responses in complex exploration situations.The Gallen deposit was also previously flown with the INPUT and GEOTEM airborne EM systems before the major exploitation period. A comparison between the results from the different survey results allows estimation of the physical properties of the Gallen deposit, which is a relatively poor conductor.A new method for removing the power line signal shows amplitudes with a smaller residual associated with the emanating fields, and more compact, cleaner responses associated with induced currents. This will make it easier to identify bedrock conductors close to power lines"

This circular is part 5 of the third paper (entitled "Excavation") of a series summarizing the technical problems involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes; part 2, power scrapers, slackline cable-way excavators, and hydraulic monitors; part 3, hydraulic, clamshell, ladder, and dipper dredges; and part 4, haulage systems in general, with particular reference to locomotive and car, hoist and car, and remote-control systems. This circular discusses the use of motor trucks, conveyor belts, pumps end pipe lines, barges and towboats, and aerial trams. MOTOR-TRUCK HAULAGE During recent years motor trucks have gained considerable ground as a successful competitor of locomotive haulage for quarries and gravel pits. Often where trucks have displaced locomotives and cars the operators readily admit an increase in both labor and total haulage operating costs but point to some other advantage as offsetting the extra expense. In other instances haulage costs have beep reduced by the use of trucks. In still others operators, having replaced locomotive haul with trucks, have again returned to the earlier method. Obviously gasoline-driven motor trucks cannot successfully compete with other types of haulage under all conditions. The apparent' growth in the number of advocates of truck haulage, however, indicates that it has passed the experimental stage and become a permanent competitor to other tyres.

The recovery of copper and cobalt from ancient copper slags from the Küre region of Turkey was investigated. A fayalitic-type of ancient copper slag containing 1.24% Cu, 0.53% Co and 53.16% Fe were subjected to an experimental study. Two different routes were followed to recover the metal values. The first route was roasting the slag with pyrite followed by leaching. The second route was flotation of the slags, roasting of the flotation tailings with pyrite and leaching. The second route was found to be suitable for the treatment of the copper slag studied. In the flotation step, a copper concentrate containing approximately 11% Cu was produced with a 77% recovery while 93% of the cobalt stayed in the tailings. In the roasting experiments, the effects of roasting time, pyrite: slag ratio and roasting temperature on the dissolution efficiencies of Cu and Co were investigated, and the optimum conditions were determined. In the tests, 87% of the cobalt dissolution was observed after one hour of roasting at 500°C with a pyrite: slag ratio of 3:1. The copper dissolution in the tests was 31%. Based on the results of this study, a process flowsheet is proposed for the evaluation of these slags.

In stopes of the 2000- and 2150-ft. levels in the North mine section of North Broken Hill Limited, whence a substantial proportion of the company's production is being drawn, and especially in stopes which involve the portion known as the Northern orebody, occurs it light-coloured friable porous material which represents average grade ore from which the lead and zinc minerals, and certain gangue constituents, have been largely or wholly removed by leaching. The 2000- and 2150-ft. levels lie, respectively, 1550 and 1700 ft. below extreme base of the pre-mine oxidized zone. Composition of the cellular product shows it to be supergene. Crush pillars have been incorporated into a mechanized, low-profile trackless system at South Deep Gold Mine. These pillars had to be designed to fail near the face and to ensure that pillar failure is contained within the pillar, to avoid bursting and the risk of high loads being generated during a seismic event, respectively. PoweRite backfill bags were recommended to maintain the integrity of the pillars; except in the main access drives, where the sidewalls were to be supported on 5.6 mm diameter weldmesh and yielding anchors. The results of a trial site investigation exceeded expectations, showing a residual pillar strength of about 37 MPa for a newly formed pillar and 8 MPa for a pillar subjected to seismicity and a closure of more than 300 mm. The introduction of these pillars has improved the rock mass conditions because of the active nature of the support, compared to the previous passive backfill method. Importantly, the pillars have increased mining efficiencies and improved face availability. A potential cost saving to the mine of R140.9 million could be realized over a period of 10 years.
